Concussion management.

  • Sport-related concussion (SRC) is a traumatic brain injury induced by biomechanical forces. Several common features that may be utilized to clinically define the nature of a concussion head injury include:
  • SRC may be caused either by a direct blow to the head, face, neck or elsewhere on the body with an impulsive force transmitted to the head.
  • SRC typically results in the rapid onset of short-lived impairment of neurological function that resolves spontaneously. However, in some cases, signs and symptoms evolve over a number of minutes to hours.
  • SRC may result in neuropathological changes, but the acute clinical signs and symptoms largely reflect a functional disturbance rather than a structural injury and, as such, no abnormality is seen on standard structural neuroimaging studies.
  • SRC results in a range of clinical signs and symptoms that may or may not involve loss of consciousness. Resolution of the clinical and cognitive features typically follows a sequential course. However, in some cases symptoms may be prolonged.
  • The clinical signs and symptoms cannot be explained by drug, alcohol or medication use, other injuries (such as cervical injuries, peripheral vestibular dysfunction, etc.) or other comorbidities (e.g., psychological factors or coexisting medical conditions).
  • History of concussion or brain injury, neurologic disorder, and mental health symptoms and disorders.
  • Symptom evaluation: Symptom evaluation in  ImPact/ test or SCAT 6
  • Cognitive assessment: ImPact – if computer is not available SCAT 6
  • Balance evaluation: Modified BESS
  • Must be removed from practice or competition for evaluation.
  • Must be evaluated by an athletic trainer or team physician or physician designee with concussion experience.
  • Must be removed from practice/play for that calendar day if concussion is confirmed or suspected.
  • May only return to play the same day if the athletic trainer, team physician or physician qualified designee determines that concussion is no longer suspected.
  • Clinical assessment for cervical spine trauma, skull fracture, intracranial bleed and catastrophic injury.
  • Removal from practice or competition
  • Symptom assessment. SCAT 6 symptom evaluation or Cognitive assessment: ImPact Test
  • Physical and neurological exam. Visual Ocular Motor Screen
  • Balance exam:  Modified BESS
  • If performed, Glasgow Coma Scale less than 13 on initial assessment, or GCS less than 15 at 2 hours or more post-initial assessment.
  • Prolonged loss of consciousness.
  • Focal neurological deficit suggesting intracranial trauma.
  • Repetitive emesis.

FOX Sports Unveils Broadcast Teams for UEFA EURO 2024™ and CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™

FOX Sports Unveils Broadcast Teams for UEFA EURO 2024™ and CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™

LOS ANGELES – FOX Sports, America’s English-language home for this year’s sunrise-to-sunset presentation of UEFA EURO 2024™ and CONMEBOL Copa América 2024™, today unveils its complete lineup of distinguished broadcast teams ahead of the network’s massive Summer of Soccer featuring the world’s biggest national teams and brightest stars. Brad Zager , FOX Sports President of Production & Operations/Executive Producer, made today’s announcement highlighting the teams.

“We’re thrilled to bring this group of world-class broadcasters from all around the globe together and have them lead the call around these two exciting tournaments,” Zager said. “Their shared passion and experience will help set the tone this summer when FOX Sports presents an amazing month of soccer between the UEFA EURO™ and Copa América™.”

Four broadcast teams will be on-site in Germany to call every UEFA EURO 2024™ match in-stadium from Friday, June 14 to Sunday, July 14 . Heralded commentator Ian Darke pairs with U.S. Men’s National Team (USMNT) icon Landon Donovan to form FOX Sports’ lead broadcast team for UEFA EURO 2024™. In 2010, Darke captured the hearts of American soccer fans when he called Donovan’s memorable injury-time goal for the U.S. against Algeria. Veteran voice Derek Rae partners with former England goalkeeper Robert Green in his FOX Sports match analyst debut, while former England defender Warren Barton joins esteemed play-by-play announcer Jacqui Oatley . Finally, acclaimed announcer Darren Fletcher pairs with legendary England midfielder Owen Hargreaves in their FOX Sports debuts for UEFA EURO 2024™.

For CONMEBOL Copa América™ from Thursday, June 20 to Sunday, July 14 , celebrated play-by-play announcer John Strong and former USMNT dynamo Stu Holden return as FOX Sports’ lead broadcast team on the call for every USMNT group-stage match and more. The Strong-Holden pairing has called more than 300 soccer matches together since 2014 – more than any other English-language television duo in the past decade. Veteran play-by-play announcer JP Dellacamera pairs with National Soccer Hall of Famer and match analyst Cobi Jones , while Luis Omar Tapia brings his signature call to the competition alongside match analyst and former USMNT star Maurice Edu .

Two veteran rules analysts provide instant insights on key moments across both tournaments in former referees Dr. Joe Machnik and Mark Clattenburg .

Match assignments will be announced before each tournament begins. New and returning studio analysts, reporters and hosts will also be revealed in the lead-up to the competitions.

UEFA EURO 2024™ Play-by-Play:

Ian Darke returns for his second major international soccer tournament with FOX Sports after calling matches at FIFA World Cup Qatar 2022™. Sports | Kendall Coyne Schofield and Minnesota win inaugural Walter Cup as Professional Women’s Hockey League champs

Kendall Coyne Schofield raises the Walter Cup after Minnesota's win over Boston during Game 5 of the PWHL Finals at Tsongas Center on May 29, 2024 in Lowell, Mass. (Photo by Troy Parla/Getty Images)

On Wednesday night, she sprinted into women’s hockey history.

The three-time Olympian chased down a rolling puck and slapped it into an empty net to seal Minnesota’s 3-0 victory over Boston in the winner-take-all Game 5 to claim the inaugural championship of the Professional Women’s Hockey League.

Liz Schepers scored to break a scoreless second-period tie, Michela Cava made it 2-0 midway through the third and Nicole Hensley stopped 17 shots for Minnesota. Coyne Schofield added the empty netter with two minutes left, and then the captain and oldest member of the roster took the first-ever lap on the ice with the Walter Cup.

“It makes me want to tear up thinking about it. She’s done so much for this sport,” said forward Taylor Heise. “She’s definitely one of the people that’s helped this sport grow and one of the reasons why this arena is sold out here tonight.”

Coyne Schofield, 32, was fresh off of winning the 2018 Olympic gold medal when she was invited to take part in a timed lap around the ice at the 2019 NHL All-Star Game. She finished seventh out of eight, but was a crowd favorite in an arena filled with chants of “U-S-A!”

“What was so important about that moment wasn’t the skate itself. It’s what happened after,” she said on the ice while her teammates posed for pictures with the trophy and and her husband stood nearby holding the son she gave birth to less than a year ago.

“It was the attention that that skate drew to so many people,” said Coyne Schofield, who was active in helping the PWHL come to fruition. “That moment brought a lot of eyes and helped catapult the reality we’re living today.”

Three nights after Minnesota prematurely celebrated a would-be game-winner in double overtime that was waved off for goaltender interference, Hensley earned her second shutout of the playoffs. Minnesota limped into the playoffs on a five-game losing streak and then got shut out in the first two games of best-of-five semifinal against Toronto.

Heise, whose eight points in the postseason was tied for the most in the league, was named the inaugural Ilana Kloss Playoff MVP. The former Minnesota Gopher was the league’s first No. 1 draft pick.

How Kendall Coyne Schofield and the PWHL aim to ‘change the landscape of women’s hockey forever’

“ We’re ‘the State of Hockey ,’” she said. “And I think this proves it.”

Boston goalie Aerin Frankel, dubbed the “Green Monster” in her forest green home sweater, made 41 saves for the runners-up. The sold-out crowd at the Tsongas Center, about an hour north of Boston, chanted her name and “Thank you, Boston!” after the final buzzer, even as the Minnesota players celebrated on the ice and league officials set up the podium for the trophy presentation.

Boston forced a decisive fifth game only after Sophie Jaques’ apparent goal in double overtime in Game 4 was taken off the board because of goaltender interference. The Minnesota players, who had already streamed onto the ice to celebrate, throwing their equipment in the air, gathered up their gloves and sticks, and the game resumed.

One minute later, Alina Muller scored to send the series back to Boston.

The crowd was eager for the home team to claim the new trophy, named for league benefactor and Los Angeles Dodgers owner Mark Walter, chanting “We want the Cup!” just like Bruins fans do down in Boston. A Fenway-style “Sweet Caroline” singalong kept them busy during the second break.

But with the game scoreless early in the second, Minnesota forward Sydney Brodt skated through the slot toward the goal. She whiffed on a wrist shot, drawing Frankel out of position, then slid around to the right side and centered the puck behind her, where Schepers tipped it in.

It was still 1-0 when Cava circled behind the net and stuffed the puck between Frankel’s pads; it trickled toward the net before the goalie knocked it over the line when she reached back to save it with her stick hand.

The game was a crowd-pleasing conclusion to the six-team league’s first season, when it blew through some benchmarks but left others unmet.

A game in Montreal against Toronto drew more than 21,000 fans to the Bell Centre. Average attendance in the regular season was 5,448, giving the league confidence to expand the schedule from 24 games to 30 next year. Toronto is looking for a bigger home than the 2,500-seat arena where it played most of its games.

One negative was below-average attendance for the New York team, which split its home between Connecticut, Long Island and New Jersey. Games were broadcast nationally in English and French in Canada, but U.S. fans were left with regional networks and YouTube.

And the teams don’t have nicknames yet — a result of the rush to get on the ice in six months after the two competing pro women’s hockey leagues in North America declared a truce, with help from Walter and tennis great Billie Jean King, last summer. The league said on Wednesday that names and logos will be announced in August.

“This year was a historic year,” Boston captain Hilary Knight said. “We built it. We’re extremely ecstatic about where it is Year 1. If anything, that reflection point is something we can take away from tonight and celebrate.”

SEC still looking for more ESPN money to go to 9 conference games

NASHVILLE, TN - JULY 17: Southeastern Conference Commissioner Greg Sankey addresses the crowd of media during Southeastern Conference Football Kickoff Media Day, July 17, 2023 at the Grand Hyatt Nashville in Nashville, Tennessee. (Photo by Matthew Maxey/Icon Sportswire via Getty Images)

DESTIN, Fla. — The SEC office hasn’t given up trying to get more money from ESPN in exchange for adding a ninth conference game. SEC commissioner Greg Sankey said the conference had “conversations with ESPN’s leadership a couple weeks ago just to re-engage” on the schedule, including to “help them understand that if we stay at eight what’s absent from the schedule.”

Namely, rivalry games such as Texas -Texas A&M, Alabama – Tennessee and Georgia – Auburn would not be played on an annual basis. The eight-game format calls for each team to only have one annual opponent and play everyone else twice every four years. The nine-game format would have three annual opponents and play everyone else bi-annually.

Alabama-Auburn, Texas- Oklahoma and Georgia- Florida are among the annual games that would be preserved either way. But that makes the previously mentioned games only twice every four years if the eight-game format in the expanded SEC becomes permanent.

For now, the SEC is preserving the secondary rivalries in the 2024 and 2025 schedules, which are eight games. The hope is that experiencing those rivalry games this year, especially Texas vs. Texas A&M, will make everyone — especially ESPN executives — unwilling to not have them take place on an annual basis.

“Now that we’re in it, and will experience the renewal of some of these rivalries and some of these games, that will shape some of the thinking as well,” Sankey said. “You can hear the conversation about CFP selection, going through it a year. We’ve got some time. But not a lot of time.”

ESPN executives are here this week, and Burke Mangus, the network’s president for content, gave a presentation to a group on Wednesday that included the coaches. But the schedule is not on the agenda this week, given the focus on the aftermath of the NCAA vs. House settlement .

Still, finding ways to get more revenue is of added importance now after the NCAA vs. House settlement, with schools expecting to pay more than $20 million to athletes starting the 2025-26 fiscal year. But going to a nine-game schedule could cut each way financially: If ESPN provides more money it would be a slam dunk, and the marquee games would have better attendance and general interest. But it would mean half the league having one fewer home game every year, and those are sources of revenue, usually around $2-$3 million per game.

“People tend to like when SEC teams play SEC teams in everything,” Florida athletic director Scott Stricklin said. “Yes, we’re very interested in having those conversations. We’ve been distracted but I’m sure we’ll come back to it.”

ESPN and SEC signed their new agreement in Dec. 2020, before Oklahoma and Texas agreed to join the league. The contract has a pro rata clause that calls for ESPN to pay more in the event of expansion, but the increase is only based on what the average payment was for the 14 teams at the time the contract was signed. It was the addition of Oklahoma and Texas that prodded the conference to go to nine games, something that was seen as a fait accompli until it ran into opposition from some programs, such as Kentucky , Arkansas and Mississippi State , while others became reluctant unless ESPN increased payment for the package, which begins this season.

The push for nine games has been helped by the looming additions: Texas athletic director Chris Del Conte and Oklahoma athletic director Joe Castiglione both said they are in favor of a nine-game schedule. But Castiglione added that it makes sense to go through one year with the expanded College Football Playoff to see how much schedule strength matters.

“It’s not just the exact same as it would be for the four-team (Playoff),” said Castiglione, a past member of the selection committee. “There has to be a deep conversation about how those kinds of conversations are going to go in the room. You have to value the teams that are going to play very challenging schedules.”

There are still eight-game proponents within the SEC, and Sankey said there remains “healthy conversation” about what going to nine games would mean for bowl eligibility, non-conference scheduling, the CFP and revenue.

Sankey was asked if there was consideration of other formats to keep the rivalry games if they stick with an eight-game schedule. Sankey answered by acknowledging the Big Ten, with a nine-game format, has a different number of annual games for each team.

“That doesn’t mean we’re going to do that,” Sankey said. “But that conversation has been introduced before. It’s been in the rearview mirror.”
