Once done, candidates will then have to send the photocopies of the Provisional Intimation slip and passport size along with the original certificates through Speed Post / Registered Post or Courier addressed to the Director, Institue of Distance Education, University of Madras, Chepauk, Chennai - 600 005 within 15 days from the date of online registration for verification purpose and return. Any delay may lead to application rejection.
Candidates may also come personally for document verification at the university campus.

Admission through learner support centers (Within Tamil Nadu)

Learner Support Centers are established by the university to facilitate admission. The complete process to apply for admission via learner support centers is mentioned below:

Candidates need to download the prospectus and application form from the official website of the Institute of Correspondence Education (ICE), University of Madras, Chennai.
Once downloaded, candidates will then have to submit it to the coordinator of any of the available learner support centers with the required certificates/ documents as mentioned by the university.
An enrollment number will then be assigned to the candidates. Candidates may then submit the requisite fees online or through offline triplicate Challan of Indian bank and submit the same through the Co-ordinator, Learner Support Centers.

Madras University Distance Education Overview

The University of Madras (UOM), Chennai, was established in 1857 by an Act passed by the Legislative Council of India. It is a state university that is coed. Madras University has been approved by the UGC and has received a “A” grade from the NAAC. In the 2023 NIRF ranking, the university category ranked the institution 50th. There is no minimum age limit for the candidates.
Candidates with bachelor’s degree (minimum of three years’ duration) or Master’s degree or equivalent degree from a university recognized by the UGC/AIU with at least 50% aggregate marks are eligible to apply

IDE is a unique design unit of the MBA Distance Education Madras University to promote higher education. While we are strong in developing and delivering courseware in the traditional print mode, significant achievements have been made in instructional design using recent technologies. This includes blended learning, interactive and face to face classroom environment. For our current and future students, we have committing to providing you the best pedagogical support. Online and Distance Learning has become one of the primary engines behind much of the world’s literacy growth.

The Institute of Distance Education university was established in 1981 as a constituent of the University of Madras with the objective of providing opportunity for greater access to education and thereby raising the levels of intellectual attainments of people from different strata of our Country as well as from other countries.

Learning can take place anywhere, typically within the work environment at a time when the need for learning manifests itself. Learning is no more a separate or cloistered event but a part of everyday life. Therefore, learners choose when to seek learning and what specific knowledge or skills they will acquire. It is they who decide when to stop and when to resume. The Institute of Distance Education offers numerous programmes in the distance mode. It is a specialist Institute with a core group of staff drawing upon content and expertise from other Departments. It undertakes to design courses, produce materials and oversee their distribution.

The University lends flexibility to the Institute of Distance Education to offer courses from different Departments and also to initiate its own programmes in response to emerging needs promptly. The IDE has been a great boon to such students who cannot undergo full time study. Also core to the IDE operations and strategic growth are external development projects in collaboration with public and private sectors. These projects are diversified in purpose, with an educational focus and include the use of technology for the enhancement. As of today, the IDE offers 109 programmes in the distance mode. All programmes of IDE have approval of the DEC. We support over 100 examination locations in this country and abroad.

Outstanding facilities, including WiFi in the library, lecture rooms, and laboratories. Beautiful surroundings and tidy living quarters. Every classroom has a smart board for interactive learning. Infrastructure and education was in high level.

Yes madras University has a huge campus, and surprisingly all the classes have lights and fans which is surprising. It has mediocre canteen facilities, the campus is moderately clean but it could be cleaner. Parking facility is available for staff as well students.

Madras University's distance education courses see more takers

CHENNAI: The enrolment for distance education courses offered by University of Madras is witnessing a steep rise of over 38% this academic year. As per the statistics, as many as 29,883 people have taken admission in various programmes of the varsity’s Institute of Distance Education (IDE).

The number is likely to rise further as the deadline for submitting applications for the courses is only on October 31. In the academic year 2021-22, IDE had enrolled 21,058 students, and the year before (2020-21), the figure was just 12,000. Director of IDE, S Aravindhan, said the MBA course of the institute is much in demand. “For MBA course alone, we have received 15,000 applications so far,” he said.

According to the varsity officials, in the post-Covid-19 period, professionals have realised the value of acquiring additional skills and they are opting for courses in distance education stream to enhance their curriculum vitae. Besides, the online and offline classes offered by the IDE is also attracting many to join the courses, they said. A faculty of the university said in last two years, the varsity saw more professionals from IT industry opting for courses like MBA.

“Many are also opting to hone their English language skills. BA in English is also one of the most popular courses,” he said, adding in the last two years, there has also been a surge in demand of MSc (counselling psychology) course. The faculty said after the mental health issues people faced during the Covid, the demand for counsellors has increased.

“Be it in schools or offices, counsellors are being recruited everywhere and to cash in on the opportunity, more students are opting for the course,” he pointed out. The IDE director hinted that looking at the overwhelming response for the courses, the deadline for submitting applications is likely to be extended by another 10 days.

To further popularise the distance education programmes, the IDE is all set to launch nine online courses next year. “We are currently working on preparing study materials for the courses. Once it is complete, the courses will be launched,” he said. The IDE of the university provides 19 UG programmes and 28 PG programmes.
