Degree Requirements

The information technology doctoral program requires 18 credits of coursework, a qualifying examination and a minimum of 24 credits of dissertation beyond the master’s program. Doctoral students are required to demonstrate research capabilities and publish in reputed journals or conferences in order to graduate.

Required Course

AIT 790 Research Methodology, IT Technical Writing and Presentation is a required course (counted as the required 18 credits of coursework) for students in the doctoral program. This course should be taken before completing the qualifying exams. Permission to register for dissertation credits (AIT 997) will not be granted until AIT 790 is completed with a grade B or better.

Publications

 A dissertation consisting of peer reviewed published work is required. Students are strongly recommended to have at least three research publications in peer-reviewed international conferences and/or journals before graduation.

Computer Science Track

Students have the option to select the computer science track. In addition to the general degree requirements for the doctorate in information technology, three specific computer science courses (9 credits) must be taken for the track in computer science, with additional requirements for the qualifying examination, listed below.

An IT doctoral student taking these three courses, passing the qualifying exam in the specified areas, and successfully completing the research requirements for the degree in a CS-related area will be eligible to graduate with a computer science track.

Students who have completed one or more of the three courses as part of their master’s degree would be required to take an additional course for each of the three courses already completed. The additional courses must be approved by the director of the information technology doctoral program.  

Note: Students in the information technology doctoral program are not required to choose a track. You may have more flexibility to choose the courses and qualifying exam topics without a track.

Information Technology

Full-time PhD students are generally funded with our financial package which consists of a research or teaching assistantship with paid tuition and fees for up to four (4) years. Part-time PhD students do not qualify for guaranteed funding however additional resources may be available.

Earning a Master's Degree

While in a doctoral program, a student may earn a master’s degree provided the following conditions are satisfied:

  • A student must be admitted to candidacy.
  • A student is eligible to receive a master’s degree upon completion of University-wide requirements and any additional degree requirements specific to the program.
  • The Doctoral Studies Committee, Department Chair, and the Graduate Associate Dean of the College must recommend students for the degree.
  • The student must apply for graduation by the published deadline the semester prior to awarding the doctoral degree.
  • All required coursework in the doctoral program at the time of admission to candidacy must have been taken within the previous six years.
  • If the master’s degree requires a thesis, the degree cannot be awarded on the basis of the doctoral qualifying examination.
  • Students will not be approved for an additional master’s degree in the same field in which an individual has previously received a master’s degree.

Course Offerings & Schedule

The Ph.D. in Information Technology can be either a full or part-time program.

Most courses are offered during the day and full-time students must enroll for nine hours in the fall semester, nine hours in the spring semester and three hours in the summer semester. We do not recommend working full-time if you plan to pursue the full-time program.

This program is does not offer a hybrid or fully online modality. All PhD programs in the college are in-residence and admitted students are expected to complete the program in-person.

PhD full-time students normally serve as either a teaching assistant or research assistant throughout the program. These experiences are an important part of the training and overall doctoral experience.

Admission is based on

The admission committee is looking for evidence that you understand the specific nature of the program that you are applying for, that you can articulate your scholarly intentions that fit with the research interests of current faculty and that you are academically prepared to succeed in the program.

The most important part of your application is your statement of purpose. Although outstanding grades and test scores are important, you should construct a clear, persuasive, well-written statement of purpose in order to be competitive.

I am completing an undergraduate degree. Am I eligible to apply?

Yes; however, you must take additional leveling courses and complete any graduate coursework where your academic background is insufficient. The catalog states that the PhD requirement is “66 hours beyond the master’s degree.” Therefore, the time required to complete a PhD will most likely be much longer for a candidate without a master’s degree than for a candidate with a master’s degree.

When are admission decisions made?

Admission decisions are typically made in March; however, exceptionally qualified candidates are considered earlier.

Can I submit GMAT/GRE test scores after the application deadline?

No. All application documents must be received by the application deadline and incomplete applications will not be considered. You will be required to upload unofficial copies within the Graduate Admissions Application.

Can I wait to submit the foreign credential evaluation (ECE transcript) until after I am accepted to UTSA?

No. Foreign credential evaluations must be received by the application deadline for your application to be processed. Processing time may take up to three weeks, and students should plan accordingly with the admission deadlines of the programs for which they are applying.

Do you accept WES transcript evaluations?

All NACES accredited evaluators are accepted.

Program Expectations

What should i expect as a doctoral student.

Your role and the expectations will change as you progress in the program. Initially, your role will be as a student with the expectation that you attend and participate in doctoral seminars with other students. Expect to read a great deal and write papers.

To prepare to become a university professor, you will work closely with faculty members to learn how to teach. You will start as a teaching assistant and work toward teaching classes independently.

Conducting research is another area of focus where you will work closely with faculty on research projects. Under the direction of a faculty committee, you will conduct original research that will be the basis for your dissertation.

How long does this program take to complete?

Most students will need four years. Plan for at least two years to complete the coursework. Add another year to pass the comprehensive exams, develop a dissertation topic and defend your dissertation proposal. Dedicate your final year(s) to dissertation research.

Are PhD students required to teach?

Teaching is crucial to your academic career and job prospects. Every PhD student should gain teaching experience before graduating. Initially, students may work as research assistants for faculty members and may also assist in teaching various courses. For students who receive stipends, they will most likely teach an undergraduate course at the Carlos Alvarez College of Business during their program.

What are the research requirements of the PhD program?

The PhD program requires students to research while they complete formal coursework and during the summers. As research assistants, students work with faculty members in joint research activities and pursue their research objectives under the supervision of faculty members. The goal is to create papers to present at academic meetings and submit to research publications by the time the student is ready to begin their dissertation research. To be competitive in the academic job market, students should prioritize producing papers and publications while in the program.

As a PhD student, who will advise me?

Your program admission will identify an initial PhD advisor. However, as your interests and research agenda develop toward preparing a dissertation proposal, a different faculty member may emerge as the appropriate advisor for your dissertation research. Your initial advisor will help you assemble a program committee of faculty, who will advise you regarding your dissertation.

Can you waive my application fee?

You may request an application waiver if

  • If you are an applicant who has attended a PhD Project Conference

Learners evaluate multidisciplinary research and practices related to leadership, organizational structures, and culture. Phd in business management admission requirements.

Applicants must provide the following information for  admission  to Capella programs and specializations:

  • A master’s degree from an institution accredited by an agency recognized by the U.S. Department of Education, or from an internationally recognized institution
  •  Your official master’s transcripts, with a minimum grade point average of 3.0 or higher on a 4.0 scale
  • A valid, government-issued form of photo identification

GRE and GMAT are not required for admission.

If you completed your most recent academic coursework, degree, or credential at an institution outside the United States, regardless of your citizenship or where you currently live, you are considered an international applicant.

Program Description

The Doctorate of Philosophy in Information Technology at University of the Cumberlands focuses on the advanced practice role of the use of predictive analytics to identify cyber threats, employ big data analytics to improving healthcare, and empower smart cities in making data-driven policy changes critical for societal well-being. This program is designed to meet the aggressive demand for qualified data scientists in virtually every sector of the economy, with classes in computer science, data intelligence, analytics, security, strategic planning, governance and global economy.

Students can earn the PhD, Information Technology in either a fully online format or an executive format combining online and on-site study. The Executive format program requires attendance at weekend residency classes. Further, the Executive PhD, Information Technology Program meets the needs of international graduate business students. This program provides both in-seat and online coursework. Graduate students joining the Executive PhD, Information Technology program will be employed or conduct projects in business-related positions and participate in Applied Learning Practicum, in which students apply what they are learning in their program to the real world via work or internship experiences.

Program of Study

The Doctorate of Philosophy in Information Technology is comprised of the following eighteen (18) hours of core required credit hours, at least twenty-four (24) hours of professional research courses, and eighteen (18) hours in a content specialty.

Program Sensitivity

While the program’s schedule requires considerable independent learning and preparation on the part of the candidate prior to each session, the schedule nevertheless enables in-depth, active learning based on critical and reflective thinking. The format allows assignments to be handled comfortably, while candidates maintain their continuing professional responsibilities. The program is designed with an applied learning component that is an integral (essential) part of the established curriculum. This allows students the opportunity to apply their studies to their place of employment.

PhD IT Program Requirements

Students will formally identify a dissertation topic and write the review of the literature in fulfillment of the requirements for DSRT 736 - Dissertation Seminar   . The remaining sections of the first three chapters of the dissertation will be written while enrolled in DSRT 839 - Advanced Research Methods   . Candidates will carry out their research to complete the dissertation.

Comprehensive Exam

Candidates sit for the Comprehensive Examination prior to enrolling DSRT 930   . The specific content, structure, and scheduling of this examination is determined by the Program Director. Tailored to each student’s program of study, questions on the Comprehensive Examination are generated by the program’s four content-related goals:

  • Expand information sciences through advanced study.
  • Promote critical thinking and problem-solving skills to include leadership at the organizational and system level and the ability to evaluate and improve the quality and safety of Information Sciences.
  • Afford structured and supervised research experiences so that students develop the technical, conceptual and communication skills that are required to conduct high quality, independent research.
  • Provide training in basic and advanced information systems theory and practice so that students master the technical and conceptual tools needed for conducting high quality research.
  • Instill ethical leadership, service, and values.

The Comprehensive Examination is proctored and graded by contributing members of program faculty, with passing marks required on all sections of the examination before the student may register for DSRT 930.

The Dissertation

The dissertation is the capstone experience in the PhD program of Information Technology. A dissertation is a research- based project that may use a wide-range of statistical, quantitative, and qualitative methods. However, in the University’s practitioner-focused program, the dissertation is conceived as a reality-based project in which the candidate engages in authentic professional problem-solving to extend best practices in the field. Specific details on dissertation requirements are included in the Dissertation Handbook.

Requirements Overview

  • Complete the Qualifying Examination (QE)
  • Establish and meet with a Supervisory Committee
  • Complete the Preliminary Examination
  • Complete two Teaching Assistantship assignments

  • Complete the  Final Examination

For students  matriculating with a bachelor’s degree , a minimum of 10 courses are required, as follows:

  • Six graduate-level courses in ECE (500-level or higher)
  • Two approved graduate-level technical electives (500-level or higher, technical in nature, and chosen to provide a coherent program of study)
  • Two approved electives (chosen to provide a coherent program of study)

For students  matriculating with a master’s degree from another institution , a minimum of five (5) courses are required, as follows:

  • Three graduate-level courses in ECE (500-level or higher)
  • One approved graduate-level technical elective (500-level or higher, technical in nature, and chosen to provide a coherent program of study)
  • One approved elective (chosen to provide a coherent program of study)

A program of study detailing the planned/completed coursework must be approved at the Qualifying Exam (bring to exam with advisor’s signature) and Preliminary Exam stages of the PhD.

Qualifying Examination

The purpose of the Qualifying Exam is to assess the potential to succeed in the PhD program by having students demonstrate:

  • Reading and deeply understanding three selected papers in the field
  • Understanding the strengths and shortcomings of the three papers
  • Understanding why the particular problem space defined by the three papers is important
  • Generating sound research ideas based on the strengths and shortcomings of the three papers
  • Writing and presenting information supporting the points above

Supervisory Committee

The supervisory committee is formed in preparation for the preliminary examination and must consist of at least five members (including the student’s advisor), at least three of which must be graduate ECE faculty members.

In addition, as required by The Graduate School, at least one (1) member of the committee must be from either another department or a clearly separate field of study within the Duke ECE Department. Committees are proposed using the  Committee Approval Form .

Note:  While the Graduate School’s Committee Approval Form lists a minimum of four (4) committee members, the ECE Department requires five (5) committee members.

Teaching Assistantship

All PhD students must complete two semesters of a Teaching Assistantship (TA) prior to graduation. We provide training before you enter an undergraduate classroom for the first time.

The student is expected to complete this requirement sometime during his or her third through the eighth semester. Teaching Assistantships will be assigned by the DGS based on the background and interests of the student and the current department needs.

Teaching Assistantships are expected to require 10 hours per week on average and may involve such activities as organizing and leading discussion sections, grading homework and quizzes, assisting in the development of course materials, supervising laboratory sessions and so forth.

Preliminary Examination

The preliminary examination, which must be completed by the end of academic year three, consists of (1) a written dissertation research proposal and 2) an oral presentation and defense of this proposal to an approved five-member faculty committee.

The written dissertation research proposal should consist of a 10-page (maximum) report plus appendices providing additional supporting information as well as an anticipated timeline for completion of all PhD degree requirements.

The oral presentation, approximately 45 minutes with extra time allotted for questions posed by the committee throughout and after the presentation, should reflect the contents of the report.

Final Examination

The student must follow the Graduate School’s guidelines for submitting the dissertation and scheduling the Final Examination, including submitting the departmental defense announcement to the ECE Graduate Office and uploading the dissertation at least two weeks prior to the defense.

About our Higher Degree Research Program

UNSW’s Doctor of Philosophy (PhD) Information Systems & Technology Management (Program code 1525) will prepare you to become a globally focused and socially engaged research leader. You’ll join a cohort of high-achieving research students and benefit from interdisciplinary engagement with your cohort. This is your opportunity to become integrated into the UNSW Business School’s community of scholars.

You’ll first undertake rigorous coursework covering research methods and theoretical foundations of information systems and operations management. As part of the program, you’ll also be involved in research projects from an early stage. This research training will equip you with the skills required to identify, analyse and solve problems in the field.

You’ll then pursue full-time research under the supervision of high-profile UNSW academics, culminating in a doctoral thesis. There will also be exciting opportunities to develop your teaching portfolio. There will also be exciting opportunities throughout to interact with industry leaders. The training is geared toward preparing you for a career in academia, although other career paths (e.g., consulting, government, industry, non-profit) are also enabled.

Your PhD thesis will showcase your research skills and enable you to make an original contribution to knowledge in your field.

PhD program structure

Year one: master of pre-doctoral business studies (mpdbs).

The first year of study is designed to provide a rigorous foundation to conduct independent research. You’ll learn a range of methodologies and build your communication and presentation skills.

Your first year of coursework study will cover fundamental qualitative and quantitative research methods. You’ll also start developing key research skills such as identifying, framing, presenting, and writing academic contributions. You’ll work as a research assistant on faculty research projects and start working on your own research as your skills develop.

The first year will help you identify your potential thesis supervisor for the PhD component of the program. Upon successful completion of the first year, you’ll be awarded a Master of Pre-Doctoral Business Studies. Year Two: Specialised Coursework & Identification of Thesis Topic

During the second year, you’ll continue in the Information Systems & Technology Management stream with a further year of advanced coursework.

You’ll choose up to eight additional research courses from a range of electives in consultation with your supervisor and PGRC, with an opportunity to take several courses outside of your specialised discipline to prepare you for interdisciplinary collaborations.

Your second year is also when you’ll identify your thesis topic with your supervisor. You’ll engage in literature review and research design, and present your research proposal to the School at the end of the year.

Years Three – Four: Original Research & Your Doctoral Thesis

The final two years of the program are focused on conducting full-time research and completing your doctoral thesis. This is your opportunity to address some of the biggest challenges in Information Systems & Technology Management and make a significant contribution to knowledge in your field. Your research will offer new critical thinking and withstand critical analysis from expert researchers in the area.

As with most other OECD countries, the number of PhD completions in Australia has grown dramatically – more than doubling in the last two decades.

On Aug. 10, 2024, a rumor spread on social media that Rachael Gunn (also known as "Raygun"), an Australian breakdancer who competed in the 2024 Paris Olympics, had a Ph.D. in breakdancing. "This australian breakdancer has a PhD in breakdancing and dance culture and was a ballroom dancer before taking up breaking. I don't even know what to say," one X post on the topic read .

"Australian Olympic breakdancer Rachael Gunn has a PhD in breakdancing and dance culture," one X user wrote , while another asked, "Who did we send? Raygun, a 36-year-old full-time lecturer at Sydney's Macquarie University, completed a PhD in breaking culture and is a lecturer in media, creative arts, literature and language," another X user wrote .

The claim also spread on other social media platforms, such as Reddit and Instagram . 

"Is she the best break dancer? No. But I have so much respect for going on an international stage to do something you love even if you're not very skilled at it," one Instagram user commented , adding that, "And, I'm pretty sure she's using this as a research endeavor and will be writing about all our reactions to her performance. Can't wait to read it!"

In short, Gunn's Ph.D. thesis, titled "Deterritorializing Gender in Sydney's Breakdancing Scene: A B-girl's Experience of B-boying," indeed focused on the topic of breakdancing. However, Gunn earned her Ph.D. in cultural studies, not in breakdancing. Furthermore, it's important to note that a "PhD in breakdancing" does not exist as an academic discipline. 

Since Gunn's research focused on the breakdancing community, but her degree is actually in the broader field of cultural studies, we have rated this claim as a "Mixture" of truths.

Gunn "secured Australia's first ever Olympic spot in the B-Girl competition at Paris 2024 by winning the QMS Oceania Championships in Sydney, NSW, Australia," the Olympics official website informed . 

Gunn earned a zero in breakdancing at the Paris 2024 Olympic Games and clips of her routine went viral on social media, with numerous users creating memes or mocking dancer's moves. "As well as criticising her attire, social media users mocked the Australian's routine as she bounced around on stage like a kangaroo and stood on her head at times," BBC article on the topic read . 

The website of the Macquarie University informed Gunn "is an interdisciplinary and practice-based researcher interested in the cultural politics of breaking" and holds a Ph.D. in cultural studies, as well as a bachelor of arts degree (Hons) in contemporary music: 

Rachael Gunn is an interdisciplinary and practice-based researcher interested in the cultural politics of breaking. She holds a PhD in Cultural Studies (2017) and a BA (Hons) in Contemporary Music (2009) from Macquarie University. Her work draws on cultural theory, dance studies, popular music studies, media, and ethnography. Rachael is a practising breaker and goes by the name of 'Raygun'. She was the Australian Breaking Association top ranked bgirl in 2020 and 2021, and represented Australia at the World Breaking Championships in Paris in 2021, in Seoul in 2022, and in Leuven (Belgium) in 2023. She won the Oceania Breaking Championships in 2023.

Gunn's biography further revealed that she is a member of the Macquarie University Performance and Expertise Reasearch Centre, and has a range of teaching experience at undergraduate and postgraduate levels "across the areas of media, creative industries, music, dance, cultural studies, and work-integrated learning." 

Moreover, it informed her research interests included, "Breaking, street dance, and hip-hop culture; youth cultures/scenes; constructions of the dancing body; politics of gender and gender performance; ethnography; the methodological dynamics between theory and practice."

Gunn earned her Ph.D. from the Department of Media, Music, Communications, and Cultural Studies within the Faculty of Arts at Macquarie University. Below, you can find the abstract of her paper, shared by the official website of Macquarie University:

This thesis critically interrogates how masculinist practices of breakdancing offers a site for the transgression of gendered norms. Drawing on my own experiences as a female within the male-dominated breakdancing scene in Sydney, first as a spectator, then as an active crew member, this thesis questions why so few female participants engage in this creative space, and how breakdancing might be the space to displace and deterritorialise gender. I use analytic autoetthnography and interviews with scene members in collaboration with theoretical frameworks offered by Deleuze and Guttari, Butler, Bourdieu and other feminist and post-structuralist philosophers, to critically examine how the capacities of bodies are constituted and shaped in Sydney's breakdancing scene, and to also locate the potentiality for moments of transgression. In other words, I conceptualize the breaking body as not a 'body' constituted through regulations and assumptions, but as an assemblage open to new rhizomatic connections. Breaking is a space that embraces difference, whereby the rituals of the dance not only augment its capacity to deterritorialize the body, but also facilitate new possibilities for performativities beyond the confines of dominant modes of thought and normative gender construction. Consequently, this thesis attempts to contribute to what I perceive as a significant gap in scholarship on hip-hop, breakdancing, and autoethnographic explorations of Deleuze-Guattarian theory.

AU to launch new PhD in Intelligence, Defense, and Cybersecurity Policy

Augusta University has received approval from the University System of Georgia Board of Regents to offer a first-of-its-kind PhD in Intelligence, Defense, and Cybersecurity Policy that will be known as AU’s PhD in national defense.

The new program, the first PhD program offered by Pamplin College of Arts, Humanities, and Social Sciences at AU, will offer students extensive core work with required credit hours in research methods, intelligence studies, strategic cybersecurity and traditional security studies. The aim of the program is to give students a broad-based understanding of security studies.

“It makes sense to extend what we are doing with the Master of Arts in Intelligence and Security Studies program by adding a first-of-its-kind PhD in national defense,” said Kim Davies , PhD, dean of Pamplin College. “Dr. Craig Albert and the faculty involved in building this new PhD have done a tremendous job creating a rigorous, state-of-the-art program that will provide students with a strong, broad-based understanding of security studies, especially as it pertains to the United States’ national security and its stature in the international arena.”

Developed as a professional degree, it is designed for academic and government professionals and includes coverage of theory and practice. The program is designed to enhance the strategic and practical knowledge of students already working in national defense, as well as those who are looking to secure careers with the Department of Defense (DoD), other federal agencies or academic institutions and think tanks aligned with the defense community.

The program’s hybrid-online instructional method will feature a mixture of mostly synchronous courses with some asynchronous options, opening the program to interested applicants nationwide, particularly those already in the workforce. This expands its potential reach to the entire nation, including all DoD sites, bases and federal agencies.

The PhD in Intelligence, Defense, and Cybersecurity Policy is designed to give students a comprehensive understanding of theory, policy, doctrine and strategy to help bolster the nation’s security and help protect its vital national interests. This program is not about coding, mathematics and computer and cyber sciences, but focuses on security studies, U.S. national security and intelligence analysis and prediction.

“The PhD in Intelligence, Defense, and Cybersecurity Policy is the first of its kind in the world, and fills a gap in the educational market and within the defense industry,” said Craig Albert , PhD, graduate director of AU’s Master of Arts in Intelligence and Security Studies (MAISS) program and soon-to-be director of the new PhD program. “The program is designed to be a renaissance of security studies, where every student will learn the full spectrum of the genre, from intelligence analysis, propaganda and disinformation/misinformation operations to data analytics and methodology, as well as more traditional coursework, including terrorism studies, counterterrorism, theories of warfare, and cyber intelligence and policy.”

As the nation and intelligence community seek new paths forward in areas like combatting propaganda, cyberwar and cyberterrorism, influence and social media operations, great power competition, medical intelligence and traditional coursework in security and national defense strategy and policy, AU has designed the program to produce graduates who can support Georgia’s vital role in national security.

“As a graduate of the MAISS program at Augusta University and an employee of the DoD, the AU PhD program will allow me to not only further my own education but better help protect the United States from potential threats,” said Grayson LaHatte, a 2022 MAISS graduate . “The MAISS program provides incredible opportunities for students and I have no doubt the PHD program will help solidify Augusta University as a top tier national defense university.”

According to the Jobs EQ Education Report, there are roughly 36,000 jobs available in Georgia within intelligence analysis, cyber security and national security. The growing number of national security-related jobs, as well as those related to cybersecurity, highlight the need for advanced training to support the workforce need.

Georgia plays a pivotal role in the intelligence community, particularly in national defense, as the state is home to several federal agencies including the Centers for Disease Control, as well as 13 Department of Defense sites. Among those sites are Fort Eisenhower , home to the U.S. Army Cyber Command , and Fort Moore , home of the Western Hemisphere Institute for Security Cooperation Army Maneuver Center of Excellence . Fort Eisenhower also hosts offices of the National Security Agency and Central Security Service.

The Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering prepares students for careers in research and academia. Our collaborative faculty are investigating a diverse range of research areas like additive manufacturing, air quality, cellular biomechanics, computational design, DNA origami, energy conversion and storage, nanoscale manufacturing, soft robotics, transdermal drug delivery, transport phenomena, machine learning, and artificial intelligence.

Doctor of Philosophy in Mechanical Engineering

Students typically complete the Ph.D. degree requirements in three to five years. Early in the program, students focus on course-work that enhances their knowledge as they prepare to conduct research.

Within one year, students must pass the departmental qualifying exam, an oral exam that tests research skills and knowledge of a core mechanical engineering subject area.

Student research forms the core of the Ph.D. program. Research involves active student-directed inquiry into an engineering problem, culminating in a written thesis and oral defense.

Ph.D. Financial Support

The majority of full-time Ph.D. students accepted through the standard application process receive fellowships that cover full tuition, the technology fee, and a stipend for living expenses for up to five years, as long as sufficient progress is made toward degree completion. These awards are sufficient to cover all expenses for the year (including summers). Students are required to pay for health insurance, the transportation fee, the activity fee, books, and course supplies. Off-campus housing is available within walking distance of campus. At least one year of residency is required for the Ph.D. We offer two ways to enter the Ph.D. program.

Advanced entry Ph.D.

The advanced entry Ph.D. is for students with an M.S. in an engineering discipline or equivalent field.

Direct Ph.D.

The direct Ph.D. is for students entering the program with a B.S. in an engineering discipline or equivalent field.

Raygun becomes viral sensation during breaking performance at 2024 Paris Olympics: Social media reacts

Breaking , more commonly known as breakdancing, made its debut as an Olympic sport this week at the 2024 Paris Games , with 17 B-girls and 16 B-boys making their way to France with the hopes of securing a gold medal.

On the first day of competition, viewers from across the world were treated to a different kind of introduction — not to the sport itself, but one of its athletes.

Though she was a long way from winning a gold medal, likely no breaker Friday captured the imagination of the international audience more than Rachael Gunn, an Australian breaker who competes under the name “Raygun.”

Raygun went 0-3 in her head-to-head competitions Friday — falling to Logistx of the United States, Syssy of France and eventual silver medalist Nicka of Lithuania by a combined score of 54-0 — and failed to record a point across those three matches, but for what she lacked in smoothly executed moves, she made up for in the hearts she won over with her demeanor.

Raygun’s short-lived Olympic experience made her a celebrity, one who people became even more enamored with once they learned more about her.

The 36-year-old Gunn, who was one of the oldest qualifiers in the breaking competition, has a PhD in cultural studies and is a college professor at Macquarie University in Sydney. Her research focuses primarily on breaking, street dance and hip-hop culture while her work draws on “cultural theory, dance studies, popular music studies, media, and ethnography.”

“In 2023, many of my students didn’t believe me when I told them I was training to qualify for the Olympics, and were shocked when they checked Google and saw that I qualified,” Gunn said to CNBC earlier this month .

Unlike much of her competition in Paris, Gunn took up break dancing later in life. She didn’t enter her first battle until 2012.

On Friday, a person who began the day as a little-known academic ended it as a viral worldwide sensation.

Ke Fan and Daniel Nichols Named Recipients of 2024 ACM-IEEE CS George Michael Memorial HPC Fellowships

New York, NY , August 14, 2024 – ACM, the Association for Computing Machinery, and the IEEE Computer Society announced today that Ke Fan of the University of Illinois at Chicago and Daniel Nichols of the University of Maryland are the recipients of the 2024 ACM-IEEE CS George Michael Memorial HPC Fellowships. The George Michael Memorial Fellowship honors exceptional PhD students throughout the world whose research focus is high-performance computing (HPC) applications, networking, storage, or large-scale data analytics.

Fan is recognized for her research in three key areas of high-performance computing: optimizing the performance of MPI collectives, enhancing the performance of irregular parallel I/O operations, and improving the scalability of performance introspection frameworks. Nichols is recognized for advancements in machine-learning based performance modeling and the advancement of large language models for HPC and scientific codes.

Fan’s research focuses on improving the performance of data movement associated with collective communication and parallel file I/O operations on large-scale supercomputers. Her most recent focus has been on two main areas: (1) Optimizing inter-process data movement, particularly in the context of all-to-all collectives, where all processes engage in data exchange. In this area, she has developed a new class of parameterized hierarchal algorithms that substantially improve the performance of both uniform and non-uniform all-to-all collectives. (2) Optimizing parallel I/O, targeting applications that generate unbalanced, irregular I/O workloads. Fan has specifically developed spatially aware data aggregation techniques that enhance load balancing and improve overall parallel I/O performance.

In addition to these two areas, she has made significant progress in improving the scalability of performance introspection frameworks, which help developers understand data movement capabilities in HPC systems. With these new insights, developers can identify bottlenecks and optimize performance at scale.

Daniel Nichols

Nichols’ research is broadly centered around the intersection of machine learning (ML) and high-performance computing. His most recent focus has been on two main areas: (1) developing novel ML-based performance models to make use of all available performance data when making predictions about code runtime properties, and (2) adapting state of the art large language model (LLM) techniques to HPC applications. By utilizing recent advances in representation learning and further advancing them to handle the unique challenges of performance modeling, Nichols’ research seeks to develop models that make use of all available data when predicting performance. This research has the potential to significantly improve both the quality and applicability of performance models.

By adapting LLM’s to HPC applications, Nichols’ work has improved their performance on HPC development tasks. He has created scientific and parallel code capable LLMs and methods for improving the quality of current models for HPC. This is part of his goal towards creating specialized LLMs to solve software complexities and allow scientists to focus on their domain research and less on the intricacies of HPC development.
