The Perfect New Year's Resolutions Essay

So it’s that time of year when you are thinking about your New Year’s resolutions and you’ve heard about this thing call a “New Year’s resolutions essay”. Now you’re asking yourself what a New Year’s resolution essay even is, if you should write a New Year resolution essay, and how to even go about it if you wanted to.

Or maybe you’re a school student and your teacher has tasked you with writing about your New Year resolutions for school, or you are a college student and your professor has asked you to stand up in front of the class and talk about your New Year resolutions for college.

Well, never fear, because this post will tell you exactly what a New Year’s resolutions essay is and how you should go about writing one if you are convinced to (or have to!) do so.

And, non-students out there, do not leave this page thinking it is just for students, because you couldn’t be more wrong. As I hope to convince you of, a New year’s resolution essay can be a powerful thing for adults and students alike.

Richie Norton quote on New Year resolutions - “Last year told you
what you needed to know.
Now it's go time.”

What Is a New Year’s Resolutions Essay?

A New Year’s resolutions essay is simply an essay that someone writes at the end of the year or beginning of the year, talking about what they learnt from the previous year and what they want to commit to doing the next year.

The New Year is often a time where people reflect on what they have and have not achieved, what they are happy about, what they are unhappy about, and what they want to change going forwards. A New Year resolution essay simply puts those thoughts in to an essay format that is either written, printed, posted online, or spoken by way of a speech.

People often use them as a way to keep themselves accountable in the year ahead. They post them online, give them to friends, put them on the wall and even on the fridge in order to give themselves the pressure of making the resolutions public. This is actually a very effective tactic to stick to your resolutions as the external pressure keeps you accountable purely from wanting to avoid embarrassment.

Jason Soroski quote on New Year resolutions - “There is nothing
magical about the flip
of the calendar, but it
represents a clean break,
a new hope,
and a blank canvas.”

What is the Purpose of a New Year’s Resolution Essay?

The purpose of a New Year resolutions essay is to get someone to really think about what they did over the last year and how they want to adjust going in to the next year. If you are at school or college and have been tasked with writing a New Year’s resolutions essay and think it is just a boring, pointless chore, I implore you to take it seriously and use the opportunity to think about your life and what you want for it.

Although arbitrary in its date, taking stock of what you have and haven’t done, what you have and haven’t achieved over the last year compared to your goals, and how you might want to improve or adjust going forwards can be an extremely powerful thing. After all, what gets measured gets managed, meaning if you take stock of where you are, or where you are not, with your goals or personal development, you have an easier time adjusting to make sure you get back on track or stay focused if you already are so.

If you are keen on personal development and self-improvement, then a New Year’s resolution essay should be something you keep in your toolkit. Ideally you would be taking stock of where you’re at throughout the year, but if you’re just getting started with personal development or have fallen off the wagon with it of late, then a New Year resolution essay could be a great place to (re)start.

Mehmet Murat ildan quote on New Year resolutions - “Every year is a
chess game.
New Year is a new
chess game! You make
the right moves,
you win the game!”

Why You Should Write a New Year Resolution Essay

You should write a New Year resolution essay because, as mentioned, it can be a really powerful tool to help you make sure you are living the life you desire. Think about it – if you are forced to sit down and actually take stock of what you did over the last year, you will be confronted with the thoughts of what you wanted to achieve when you thought about this same topic the year before and whether you actually achieved those things. Although confronting and uncomfortable, you can use that as an opportunity to make adjustments and new, better plans for this year.

Or maybe it will give you the chance to look book and realise you absolutely rocked it, nailing all your goals and then some. So maybe your essay will help instil more confidence in you and help you think about the even greater things you can achieve in the next year.

This is a great opportunity for personal reflection – something most people don’t do. This could be a way to make sure you have the best year next year. This essay could be your chance to make new goals, new targets, and new promises to yourself.

Vern McLellan quote on New Year resolutions - "What the new year
brings to you
will depend a great deal
on what you bring
to the new year."

How to Write a New Year Resolutions Essay

How to get ideas for a new year’s resolution essay.

The best way to write a New Year resolutions essay is to self-reflect. Think back on your year and what you are glad you did and what you regret not doing. Then think how you wish you had behaved or where you feel you did well. Those things will likely point towards your resolutions or at least give you some ideas on what your resolutions could be.

You could also read other people’s resolutions online, getting ideas from what they have said. Perhaps there is an actor, athlete, politician, or other public figure you are a fan of. How do they act? How do they carry themselves in public? What do you like about them? Would you like to be similar to them in any way? This could also give you ideas on what your resolutions might be.

Did you witness something that upset you or inspired you during the year? Have you read something that made you think deeply? What was it about those things that made you feel that way? Every situation you have been in or witnessed affected you in some way. What ways were you affected? How you feel about those things could point you towards your resolutions in regards to the kind of person you want to be and how you want to act.

Taylor Duvall quote on New Year resolutions - "This year, be structured enough
for success and achievement
and flexible enough
for creativity and fun."

Perhaps you’ve been thinking about making a career change lately. Maybe you hate your job and want to move on. What could you do and how could you act over the next year that will help you move in to a career or field you want to do? Do you like your job and want to do better and get promoted? What resolutions could you have that will make you stand out to your boss?

Have you been working hard enough at school or college, or have you been slacking off? Have you been taking part in extra-curricular activities and want to do more, or have you been keeping yourself isolated and regret it?

Do you keep making the same mistakes in love or with your diet? Do you want to get in shape, exercise more, and make sure you eat the right things going forwards?

In essence, think about where you are unhappy, dissatisfied, or wanting to improve in life. Those things can point to possible resolutions. On the other hand, think where you feel you are doing well, where you have succeeded and excelled. Do you want to make resolutions to improve those things even further or simply to make sure your are continuing to do those things?

Tips for students: if you are looking for some inspiration to come up with your New Year resolutions, you should check out this post on The Best New Year Resolutions to Help Students Succeed .

Cyril Cusack quote on New Year resolutions - "If you asked me for my
new year resolution,
it would be
to find out who I am."

Writing a New Year’s resolution essay

Do you want your essay to be short – one you can simply stick up on the fridge and look at quickly every morning? Perhaps bullet points are the way forwards for you.

Do you do better and connect more when you get deep in to something? Maybe you want to write something longer-form or even a full-blown manifesto if you think that would help you!

There are no rights or wrongs when it comes to your New Year resolution essay. The point is to write something that makes you think, means something to you and is something you want to stick to.

The most usual way to write an essay is to write an opening statement – what you propose to say in your essay, the argument you are going to make, where you are going to take your audience – then make your points – in this case, talk about what you learnt about yourself over the last year and how you would like to adjust or improve over the next year – then make your conclusion – a short summary and ending to what you have said.

Melody Beattie quote on New Year resolutions - "The new year stands
before us like a chapter in a book,
waiting to be written.
We can help write that story
by setting goals."

When Should I Write My New Year Resolution Essay?

You should write your New Year resolution essay when you are in the best frame of mind to do it, when you can give it the most dedication. You should also try and write it as close to New Year’s Eve as possible, as this will mean you can take full stock of year you just had and start fresh the next day – on New Year’s Day – having just written your New Year’s resolutions essay.

You may choose to write it with a friend, write it alone, with loud, inspirational music on, or in a quiet room only lit with candles. However you do it, just be sure to put your full focus on it in order to get the most benefit.

Michael Josephson quote on New Year resolutions - "Approach the new year
with resolve to find the
opportunities hidden
in each new day."

When it comes to writing your New Year’s resolutions essay, remember that this could be a really good opportunity to improve your life, to make sure you are going after your dreams , to make sure you aren’t wasting your life or wasting your time as you go through the year, so that you avoid feeling like a failure again if that is a pattern for you and that you feel successful throughout the year as you stick to your resolutions and achieve your goals.

Use this opportunity to make this your best New Year ever… no… your best YEAR ever. Go in to January with your essay in hand. Put it on the fridge, share it online, do whatever your must to make sure the resolutions you made stay in the forefront of your mind throughout the year (and not just the first few weeks of January). And then make sure you act on and stick to those resolutions.

250 Words Essay on My New Year Resolution

The advent of a new year always brings with it a sense of renewal and a chance to better ourselves. As we bid adieu to 2021 and welcome 2022, we inherently seek to improve aspects of our lives. My New Year resolution, therefore, is to cultivate mindfulness, a trait often overlooked in our fast-paced world.

The Importance of Mindfulness

Mindfulness is a state of active, open attention to the present. It involves acknowledging and accepting one’s feelings, thoughts, and bodily sensations. The importance of mindfulness cannot be overstated, especially in the context of a world that is increasingly characterized by frenetic activity and stress.

Approach to Achieving Mindfulness

The first step to achieving mindfulness is to set aside a few minutes each day for quiet contemplation. This will involve disconnecting from digital devices and focusing on the present moment. This practice, while seemingly simple, requires a high degree of discipline and consistency, especially in the face of constant distractions.

Expected Outcomes

By practicing mindfulness, I hope to cultivate a more balanced and peaceful state of mind. This resolution will not only help me to manage stress more effectively but also enhance my cognitive abilities, thereby improving my academic performance.

In conclusion, my New Year resolution is a journey towards self-improvement and mental well-being. By cultivating mindfulness, I aim to create a more harmonious relationship with my environment and myself. As we step into 2022, I invite my fellow students to join me in this endeavor, as we strive to make the most of the opportunities that lie ahead.

500 Words Essay on My New Year Resolution

Understanding new year resolutions.

New Year resolutions are essentially personal goals or objectives set at the beginning of a year. They serve as a roadmap to guide our actions and decisions throughout the year. The tradition of New Year resolutions dates back to ancient times, with the Romans making promises to the god Janus, after whom the month of January is named. Today, these resolutions have evolved into a self-imposed framework for personal development.

My New Year Resolution

My New Year resolution for the forthcoming year is to enhance my critical thinking and problem-solving skills. In an era of rapid technological advancement and unprecedented challenges, these two skills are of paramount importance. They not only help in academic pursuits but are also crucial in navigating the complexities of life.

Why Critical Thinking and Problem-Solving?

The ability to think critically allows us to evaluate information objectively, make rational decisions, and form reasoned arguments. It fosters creativity and innovation, empowering us to question established norms and venture into unexplored territories. On the other hand, problem-solving skills enable us to confront challenges head-on, devise effective solutions, and turn adversities into opportunities.

Implementing the Resolution

Challenges and overcoming them.

While the path towards achieving this resolution is fraught with challenges, they are not insurmountable. The primary hurdle is the inherent bias and preconceived notions that often cloud our judgement. Overcoming this requires conscious effort and constant self-reflection. Another challenge is the fear of failure, which can deter us from attempting to solve complex problems. This can be overcome by adopting a growth mindset, viewing failures as stepping stones towards success.

New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing (MADE EASY!) for Middle School

new years resolution essay ideas for middle school language arts

Happy New Year! The return from winter break in January offers the perfect backdrop to get students thinking about their academic and personal goals for the year. I love to take the time to challenge my students to think about their work so far and where they hope to be by the end of the school year. I like to begin the year with a New Year’s resolution essay writing unit where we work on goal-setting and resolve to do things that will help us to be an even better version of ourselves.

There are plenty of unique ways to teach essay writing, but I have found success with the BING BANG BONGO essay template. The concept is easy for students to understand. Here is an overview of the steps:

  • Identify your topic, and brainstorm the three main points or ideas you will use to craft your essay.
  • Introduction with a Topic Sentence . What is your piece about? What three pieces of information do you want to share with the reader based on the topic of your piece?
  • BING Paragraph 1 : What is the first idea you shared in your topic sentence? Your first sentence should introduce that first idea. Follow this with two or three supporting sentences, and close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BANG Paragraph 2 : What is the second idea you shared in your topic sentence? Two or three supporting sentences should follow the opening sentence in introducing that second idea. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • BONGO Paragraph 3 : What is the third idea you shared in your topic sentence? Again, clearly state the third idea in your opening sentence and write two or three supporting sentences. Close the paragraph with a concluding sentence.
  • Conclusion: Concluding Sentence: Bring your piece to a close. Restate the purpose of the essay, but do not add any new information. Make sure you complete your thoughts so the reader walks away with a full understanding of your points.

If you are interested in a complete essay writing resource that is based on the BING, BANG, BONGO strategy, check out my New Year’s Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit , which can be used as a printable unit or integrated in Google Classroom.

New Year's Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit

To kick off the brainstorming process for this lesson plan, I start by discussing commercials students have noticed on TV. Typically, they will confirm they have seen lots of commercials for gym memberships and weight-loss companies. I ask them why they think these are so prominent during January, and they respond that people are often setting goals at the beginning of a new year.

From there, we create a brainstorm cloud where students list ways they could improve themselves. Some examples are: practicing harder, putting more effort into school work, listening more to a parent, being more responsible, etc. Depending on the suggestions you receive, it can also be helpful to explain the difference between setting a goal and achieving a dream.

Next, I have the students decide on the three goals they want to work on. Those get added to their brainstorm organizer, and we then move on to writing.

resolution brainstorm organizer

Next, we move on to creating our topic sentences. Sometimes it is best for teachers to share examples of their own topic sentences first, so students understand how to begin organizing their writing. I usually model my own resolutions in front of the class so we can go through the thought process together. My three goals for this project were: saving more money, being less quick-tempered, and saying only respectful things about others.

Once you establish topic sentences, show students how your BING paragraph (in my case) would be all about saving money, my BANG paragraph would be all about being less quick-tempered, and my BONGO paragraph would be all about saying only respectful things about others.

Students always LOVE to hear the stories behind my resolutions, and you’ll never face a shortage of suggestions to help you achieve your resolutions!

BING BANG BONGO essay writing paragraphs

In addition to having three strategies, I require each paragraph to include an opening sentence introducing the resolution and a concluding sentence bringing the paragraph to a close.

On the second day, I like to review our previous instructions and get to work on our introductions and conclusions. Some teachers may find this strategy backwards, but I have found it can be tricky for students to find a place to begin. With each of their body paragraphs completed, students have a better grasp of how they need to grab the reader’s attention and then bring the work to a close.

I often use the example of crime and drama shows when discussing the introductory paragraph. Often, the writers open the show with a shocking image or event to grab the audience’s attention and keep them glued to the show. This is the same type of statement we want to make with the first sentences in our resolution essay.

For the conclusions, I share how we are bringing the piece to a close and sending the reader on their way. This is NOT the time to share new information, but instead to give the reader the chance to reflect on what we have shared. At this point, the students will have completed their organizers and are ready for the first draft of their resolution essay.

As part of the review process, I typically have a writing conference with each student. The focus here is: mechanics-CUPS-capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling. We also discuss organization and the use of transitions in their sentences. Here is an example editing chart, which is included in the Resolution Essay Writing Toolkit from above.

CUPS Editing Chart - capitalization, usage/grammar, punctuation, and spelling

After all edits are in place, students rewrite their final drafts and publish them on their Chromebooks or display them in the classroom. Not everyone will be interested in sharing their resolutions, so choose which format makes the most sense for your group.

Essay writing is a skill that students can learn in the middle grades and will carry with them through college. Sadly, this wasn’t a skill I learned until high school, but with common core standards, writing extensive or elaborate pieces is now a requirement for our students at all levels, specifically in the middle grades.

For this reason, I created the Resolutions Made Easy writing resource. I wanted to help my students construct a thorough essay that required them to write 5-paragraphs effectively and successfully. It provides all the materials you need to walk students through the brainstorming, drafting, editing, and publishing stages.

It takes my students about five class periods to complete the entire process, depending on how quickly they are able to type their papers. It may take your students more or less time.

If you are considering my essay writing toolkit, be sure to check out my January ELA Bundle which includes the writing toolkit and three additional units that you might like to try during this first month back from break. The New Year is the perfect time to refresh your classroom and experiment with new lesson formats to keep your students engaged.

Short Essay: New Year Resolution

New Year’s resolutions are commitments that individuals make to themselves to improve or change their habits, lifestyles, or relationships at the start of a new year. Writing a short essay on this topic offers a chance to explore the psychological aspects, effectiveness, and cultural significance of these resolutions. Here’s how to structure and craft a compelling short essay on New Year’s resolutions.

Table of Contents

Title and Introduction

Title : Choose a title that is both catchy and informative, such as “New Beginnings: The Power and Pitfalls of New Year’s Resolutions.”

Body of the Essay

Cultural Significance and Variations :

Summarize the key points discussed in your essay, reinforcing the idea that New Year’s resolutions, despite their challenges, play a significant role in personal and cultural practices. End with a thoughtful conclusion or a personal reflection on the value of making resolutions, or perhaps a call to action encouraging readers to approach their New Year’s resolutions with realistic and achievable goals.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #1

As the calendar turns and a new year dawns upon us, it is a time of reflection, renewal, and the opportunity for personal growth. New Year’s resolutions have long been a tradition, allowing individuals to set intentions and goals for the coming year. For me, this tradition is not just a fleeting promise but a chance to embark on a journey of self-improvement.

Another resolution I have is to expand my knowledge and broaden my horizons. Learning should be a lifelong endeavor, and I believe that continuous education is key to personal growth. Whether it’s through reading books, attending seminars, or taking up new hobbies, I aspire to constantly seek knowledge, explore diverse perspectives, and embrace new opportunities for intellectual development. By doing so, I hope to nurture my curiosity, deepen my understanding of the world, and become a more well-rounded individual.

Additionally, I resolve to foster stronger connections with loved ones and build meaningful relationships. In today’s digital age, it is easy to get caught up in a virtual world, often overlooking the importance of genuine human connection. I want to invest time and effort in nurturing my relationships, engaging in meaningful conversations, and creating lasting memories with family and friends. By being present and actively listening, I hope to strengthen the bonds that enrich my life and bring joy to those around me.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #2

As the clock strikes midnight on New Year’s Eve, a sense of possibility fills the air. It’s a time when we bid farewell to the old and eagerly embrace the new, armed with resolutions that promise personal growth and positive change. This year, I am determined to embark on a transformative journey through my New Year’s resolutions.

First and foremost, I resolve to cultivate a mindset of gratitude and positivity. In a world often defined by negativity and challenges, it is crucial to acknowledge and appreciate the blessings that surround us. Each day, I will strive to find something to be grateful for, whether it’s a simple pleasure or a significant achievement. By shifting my perspective to one of gratitude, I hope to nurture a positive outlook that permeates every aspect of my life.

Lastly, I resolve to make a positive impact in the world around me. Small acts of kindness can create ripples of change that extend far beyond our immediate sphere. I will strive to contribute to my community through volunteering, supporting causes I care about, and spreading kindness wherever I go. By recognizing the power of my actions, no matter how small, I can be part of a collective effort to create a more compassionate and harmonious world.

New Year Resolution Essay Example #3

First and foremost, I resolve to achieve a healthier work-life balance. In our fast-paced world, it’s easy to become consumed by professional responsibilities, leaving little time for personal pursuits and relationships. I will set clear boundaries, carve out dedicated time for self-care, and strive to be fully present in my personal life. By nurturing a harmonious balance between work and leisure, I aim to enhance my overall well-being and cultivate stronger connections with loved ones.

In addition, I resolve to prioritize self-reflection and personal growth. Regular self-reflection allows us to gain insights into our thoughts, emotions, and behaviors, enabling us to make intentional choices. I will dedicate time for introspection, journaling, and setting personal goals. By embracing self-reflection, I can identify areas for improvement, celebrate achievements, and chart a course for personal growth and development.

Furthermore, I aspire to embrace sustainability and contribute to a healthier planet. I will adopt eco-friendly practices such as reducing waste, conserving energy, and supporting sustainable initiatives. By making conscious choices that minimize my ecological footprint, I can contribute to the preservation of our environment and inspire others to do the same.

My New Year Resolution Essay - 100, 200, 500 Words

People celebrate the beginning of a new year to give a fresh start to their lives. They take new year resolutions because everyone made mistakes in the previous year that they want to avoid in the future or to do something new in the next year. Resolutions assist us in staying focused on our choices.

When this year began, I resolved to focus on areas where I am weak or lack confidence. This covered my weak subject areas, my extreme engagement in watching web series, my inability to manage time for other activities etc. I made a timetable which I reviewed and modified every week, such that I accommodated all my activities and devoted adequate time to them. At the end of the year, I could feel positive results and felt proud of myself for sticking to my new year resolutions.

The New year reminds us that time is not permanent. It moves silently and stops for no one. A single goal or a list of goals one wants to accomplish or get rid of might form a new year's resolution. They give us a new chance to achieve something in our life, whether it is related to our personal life, professional life or academic life. For a resolution to work in our lives, we must be a person with strong determination.

Importance of Resolutions | New year resolutions are important for various reasons, some of them being:-

All activities that waste time and result in nothing are eliminated and replaced with new ones that never waste time and result in positive changes.

Someone who does not make any resolutions for the new year is similar to someone walking somewhere without knowing the way.

No matter how big or little a resolution is, it is important to consider its purpose and the results it will produce when put into practice in our daily lives.

My Resolutions | I have also made resolutions previously, but like everyone else, I break them. But this time, I will keep my resolutions and put more effort into changing myself. I made a list of resolutions that I plan to begin following next year. They consist of sticking to a set schedule for time management, avoiding junk food and putting a priority on healthy food for better health, and, most importantly, completing courses before exams.

A New year is not only about parties and celebrations or spending money lavishly, but it is also an excellent opportunity to start over and make changes in our life. Having a new year's resolution is a thing to be proud of and to share with others. It is what we promised to do at the end of the year. Making a new year's resolution is crucial because I need a goal or purpose to live.

Different People, Different Resolutions

Before moving forward, it is important to keep in mind that the changes must be fair and respectable. A resolution for the coming year is an idea that better defines and represents you. A new year's resolution is different for every person. Some may believe that resolutions work, while others may feel that they do nothing. A mature man will have the resolution to avoid bad habits like smoking and drinking alcohol. For students, it may include exercising daily, going to bed early, eating healthy food etc. Having a new year resolution sounds as easy as ABC but applying it throughout the year is a big task as the world is full of distractions.

As the new year unfolded, I embraced a resolution that resonated deeply with my core values and aspirations. My resolution is to enhance my environmental consciousness and contribute positively to the planet by adopting a zero-waste lifestyle. This ambitious goal, I believe, is not just a personal milestone but a crucial step towards a sustainable future.

To actualize this resolution, I've embarked on a journey of gradual, mindful changes. It began with simple, yet impactful actions like eliminating single-use plastics from my daily routine and advocating for eco-friendly alternatives. Each week, I delve into learning about sustainable practices, from composting kitchen waste to supporting local, organic produce. This hands-on approach allows me to witness the tangible benefits of my efforts, fostering a deeper connection with the environment.

Emotionally, this resolution instills a sense of empowerment and hope within me. Witnessing the direct impact of my actions on the environment fills me with pride and motivates me to persevere. Four Steps to Write a New Year’s Resolution You’ll Keep

Writing down any type of goal—including New Year’s resolutions—can help you stick with them! Below, we’ll go over why it helps and how to write the perfect resolutions.

Goal Get ‘Em

Let’s state the obvious: Most people don’t fulfill their New Year’s resolutions.

So, don’t beat yourself up if you didn’t reach the goals you set for yourself last year. The fact that you’re here means you want this upcoming year to be different. And guess what? You’re already off to a good start.

Successfully setting resolutions involves much more than just jotting them down on a sticky note. Below, we’ll discuss the importance of writing down your goals and then outline four easy-to-follow steps that’ll help you craft a resolution you’ll truly stick with.

Graphic shows crying Peter Parker meme with text that reads "When it's the lady day of the year and you haven't achieved your resolutions"

There are two major reasons why you should write down your goals.

It serves as a visual cue and daily reminder.

Having your goals written down gives you something you can easily refer to and access whenever you need to.

The daily hustle and bustle of life makes it easy to get distracted from our goals. Sometimes, things get so busy, we completely forget them. A paper with your goals written on them, whether tucked away in your wallet or purse or taped up on your refrigerator, works as a visual cue to get started or keep working on pursuing your goals.

A goal that lives solely in your mind is at risk of being forgotten.

It “encodes” the goal into your brain.

The “ generation effect ” explains that information is better memorized if generated in one’s own mind, compared to information that is only read. You can leverage this phenomenon by formulating goals in your mind and then writing them down to encourage your brain to deeply analyze, process, and internalize them.

Perfectly Pen Your Goals

Even if no one is going to see the goals you write down, they should still be written flawlessly. Why take effort to craft something so important only for it to be riddled with spelling, grammar, and punctuation mistakes?

Ensure your resolutions are flawless with LanguageTool—a multilingual writing assistant than ensures your text is error-free and styled to perfection.

Now that you understand why you should write down your goals, let’s get to the good part! Here are the four easy steps to follow that’ll help you achieve your resolution.

1. Focus on one goal.

You might be tempted to work on two, three, or even five resolutions this upcoming year. But instead of giving a small percentage of your effort to several goals, it’s better to give 100% to just one. Ask yourself, “What is my priority?” Then, make that your resolution for the year.

And if you have numerous priorities you want to accomplish, at least focus on them one at a time. Once you’ve completed one, move on to the next. Remember, our brains aren’t great at multitasking.

2. Split the major goal into smaller goals.

Once you’ve decided on a resolution, split it into smaller, easier-to-achieve goals. For example, the thought of writing a book might stop you in your tracks. But it’ll seem much more attainable if you tell yourself to write one chapter a month.

Write a book. Write a chapter. The latter is infinitely less daunting.

3. Decide on which actions you’ll have to take.

Once you’ve decided on a goal, think about the specific actions you’ll have to take to help you reach it. Let’s stick to the writing example. There’s much more to writing a book than composing it. You also have to take time to brainstorm, research, outline, write drafts, edit, and proofread.

You can think of the actionable steps required for just about any goal. Do you want to run faster? You’ll have to also take time to stretch, eat an optimal diet, and strength train to support your leg muscles.

4. Set a schedule.

Now that you have a list of actions you can take to help you achieve your resolution, it’s time to create a detailed schedule. It should look something like this:

If I want to write a book by writing one chapter a month, I’ll have to write for one hour, two times a week. I’ll take one additional day of the week to brainstorm and research, and another day to edit and proofread.

In other words, break down your goal by action, and set a precise amount of time you want to be working on each action.

new year's resolution 5 paragraph essay

We’re not here to provide any false sense of security. Life is going to get hectic. You’ll be surrounded by distractions. And there will be days when you’re not motivated at all. But when you follow the steps listed above, you’ll make yourself less susceptible to the chaos of everyday life, and more likely to fulfill your resolution.

So, goal get’ em!

Step 3: Define Your Vision

Now, let's strategize on how to address our question. What are our intended achievements? In crafting our objectives, keep in mind that this plan spans the entire year. Therefore, diversify your goals across professional, educational, health, or personal domains. Consider listing out specific goals for the year.

 Set up New Year Goals

Pro Tip : Optimal goal-setting involves using the SMART criteria. This simple tool ensures that our goals are Specific, Measurable, Achievable, Relevant, and Time-bound, leading to more effective results.

Step 4: Prepare a concise Thesis Statement

Now, we will create a thesis statement—a brief statement that answers our main question from Step 2. This thesis statement will encompass all the goals and objectives we listed, aiming to provide a succinct response to our question. Incorporate this thesis statement into your introductory paragraph.

New Year Resolution Thesis Statement

Step 5: Start your introduction

The next step is to write your introductory paragraph; remember, the introduction helps your readers understand what they are going to be reading about as they move forward in your essay. So, in this introduction, we can incorporate a hook - something that will engage the reader and help them understand the goals you're selecting and why you're selecting them. A great example of a hook for your New Year's resolution essay could be:

"New Year's magic whispers promises of growth. This essay is my map to a year brimming with purpose and triumphs."

Pro tip: Begin your introductory paragraph with a motivational quote to make the introduction more compelling and engaging.

Step 6: Create your Topic Sentences

Once we have our thesis statement, it's crucial to write clear topic sentences as openers for each goal. These sentences should briefly introduce and discuss each objective. Remember, at this point, our main tasks are to ensure our goals are noted down and well-understood. This step is pivotal, taking up a significant portion of the initial writing process for the New Year Resolution essay.

Step 7: Write Body Paragraphs

Now that we have our entire plan – the question we are addressing, our statement, and our goals – it's time to craft body paragraphs for each goal. In these paragraphs, we'll outline the action plan we've decided upon. For instance, if your goal is to read a book every month, you should have a clear set of instructions, such as the genre you're interested in, the number of pages you aim to read, and what to do if you miss a day.

Pro Tip : It's always beneficial to include your motivation for achieving each goal. This way, if you ever feel lost, a quick review of your essay can provide guidance and get you back

Step 8: Conclude

Now that we are at the end of our essay, it is important to conclude it thoroughly. How can we do this effectively? Reconnect with the hook that we started in the introduction. Discuss how the journey outlined in your essay leads back to the promises of growth mentioned in the hook. Then, reflect on how you envision yourself if you successfully achieve all your New Year's resolutions.

Step 9: Revise and Edit

Take a careful look at your essay and make it shine. Check for any spelling, grammar, or punctuation mistakes. Make sure every word is clear and makes sense. When you pay attention to these details, your writing will look more professional. Think of it as adding a touch of literary stardust to your work, making it sparkle and stand out.

Step 10 : Finalize the Format

Imagine your essay as a well-crafted outfit. Dress it in the right formatting style, whether it's the classic MLA or the modern APA. Pay close attention to the details like font, spacing, and citation style, ensuring your creation is presented flawlessly. This final touch will elevate your essay, making it stand out as a polished work of art.

So, these are the steps, and by following them, users can ensure they can effortlessly compose their own New Year's resolution essay. Make sure to employ tips for crafting an effective New Year's resolution essay. Reflect, brainstorm ideas, unleash your creativity, and discover the best New Year's resolution ideas that truly propels long-term improvement for yourself.

Paragraph On New Year Resolutions: Setting and Achieving Goals

As the new year approaches, many of us reflect on the past year and set goals for the year to come. New Year’s resolutions can be a powerful tool for personal growth and self-improvement, but it’s important to set realistic and achievable goals.

my new year resolution paragraph

Next Essay: Importance of Goals

One way to set effective New Year’s resolutions is to focus on one or two specific areas of your life that you want to improve. For example, if you want to lose weight, set a specific goal, such as “I will lose 10 pounds in the next six months.” Another tip is to break down your goal into smaller, more manageable steps. For example, if you want to save money, set a specific savings goal and create a budget to help you achieve it.

Another key to achieving your New Year’s resolutions is to make a plan and stick to it. This means setting specific deadlines, tracking your progress, and holding yourself accountable. It’s also important to have a support system in place, whether it’s friends, family, or a professional coach.

As you work towards your New Year’s resolutions, it’s important to remember that setbacks and failures are a normal part of the process. Don’t be too hard on yourself if you slip up or don’t meet your goals. Instead, focus on what you’ve learned from the experience and use it to adjust your approach and keep moving forward.

Paragraph On My New Year Resolution | Achieving Personal Growth and Fulfillment

As the new year approaches, many of us reflect on the past year and set goals for the year to come. New Year’s resolutions can be a powerful tool for personal growth and self-improvement. My New Year Resolution is to focus on my personal growth and fulfillment. I want to work on becoming the best version of myself and to be more content with my life.

One of the things I want to focus on is my career. I want to take the steps necessary to move forward in my career and to be successful in my field. I plan to achieve this by setting specific goals, seeking out opportunities to learn and grow, and networking with other professionals in my industry. I also want to work on developing my leadership skills, so I can become a better leader and team member.

Another area I want to focus on is my relationships. I want to strengthen my connections with family and friends, and I also want to work on building new relationships. I plan to achieve this by being more present and engaged in my interactions with others, making time for the people in my life, and being more open to new connections.

Finally, I want to focus on my personal development. I plan to read more books, take courses, and attend workshops to learn new skills and gain new knowledge. I also want to take the time to reflect on my thoughts and emotions and work on becoming more self-aware.

Achieving my New Year Resolution will require dedication and hard work, but I am determined to make the most out of this new year. I believe that by focusing on my personal growth and fulfillment, I will be able to lead a happier and more fulfilling life.

The key to achieving my New Year Resolution is to set specific and achievable goals, create a plan to reach them, and hold myself accountable. I also want to surround myself with supportive people and to remind myself of the reasons why I made this resolution in the first place. By taking these steps, I am confident that I will be able to achieve my New Year Resolution and make the most out of this new year.

Setting New Year’s resolutions can be a great way to improve your life, but it’s important to set realistic and achievable goals, make a plan and stick to it, and have a support system in place. Remember that setbacks and failures are a normal part of the process, so don’t be too hard on yourself if you slip up or don’t meet your goals. Keep moving forward and make this year your best yet.

4. Make it a priority: Your resolution should be something that is important to you, something that you are willing to make a priority in your life. Once you’ve set your goal, make sure to make time for it in your schedule.

5. Hold yourself accountable: Track your progress and hold yourself accountable for reaching your goal. This can be as simple as keeping a journal or setting reminders on your phone.

“With reflection and attention to positive change, taking note of what we have learned on our journey up until now, can give us the opportunity to apply it to the future, to take with us what is helpful and to leave behind what is not.”

Carlson writes about the importance of reflection and learning from one’s mistakes for the new year ahead. She sees the new year as a time for new beginnings; she wants it to be the start of positive change for others, just as it has been for her. Reflection is essential, as it allows us to see what we can improve on and do better in the coming year.

“According to Goleman, the link between attention and excellence is behind almost all our achievements. Attention is needed not only to understand, learn or remember, but also to read the emotions of others, generate empathy and build good relationships. It is an asset that, despite being little known and despised, has great relevance in how we face life.”

Sáez briefly explains his new year ’s resolution: to be more attentive. He wants to improve his attention and focus on forming better relationships with others, healthily using technology, and better his mental health. By reading the book Focus: The Hidden Driver of Excellence , he hopes to hone his attention for the new year and do better in the future. You might also be interested in these essays about celebration .

“And yes, I know this pandemic is not done with its destruction, but I also know we’re fighting back like hell and making progress . And that long-awaited day of celebration is now coming sooner rather than later. And when that day comes, I can’t help but believe that the world will be a better place. I know I will be a better person and millions of you will be as well.”

In this solemn piece, Bevier laments new year ’s celebrations during the COVID-19 pandemic, which has killed millions. She is sad for those she has lost and the loss of the pre-pandemic life she loved. However, she hopes the next new year will not be like the last, and she has learned to be grateful for the more minor things in life. The pandemic has taught her a lot, but most importantly, to be optimistic for the future and to look ahead to the new year with hope, kindness, and gratitude.

“In reality, new years eve is no different to any other night of the year yet; we can’t help but assign some special meaning to the 31st of December. The psychological significance of the night can be a good thing, but it can also create tremendous anxiety for us.”

Farrell explains the psychological pressure of New Year ’s Eve. This one night is no different from any other, but since it is the last one of the year, people feel the need to reflect not only on the day but the entire year. The imagery of big parties and “new beginnings” further add to the pressure, as people feel the need to have the “picture-perfect” new year . He says that while it can be helpful to use the beginning of the year as the start of positive change, it is more important to learn from one’s mistakes, no matter what time of the year.

“‘Anytime you let social convention dictate what you do rather than doing what feels best for you, you run the risk of anxiety, depression, and so on,’ says Dr. Kubiak. New Year ’s Eve leaves this group with a tough choice: go out even though you really don’t want to or deal with the uncomfortable task of telling your friends that you’re going to sit this one out.”

Ettachfini explains new year ’s eve from the perspective of those who get anxious or depressed during this time. Failure during the year, social anxiety, and the feeling of having to say goodbye to the year are all contributing factors. She cites information from Dr. Larry Kubiak, who says that depression and anxiety are normal, but it is essential to talk about them with a loved one to prevent their consuming of your life.

Skipping Stones

New Year’s Resolution

By Vajra Vanukuri, age 11, grade 6, California.

E leven-year-old Kristina shouted on the phone. Vera, her mother, packing lunches for her two children, heard the shouting and dashed to Kristina. Kristina gave her the phone. Kristina was talking to her father at his doctor’s office in Moscow, Russia.

“Vlad, why is Kristina shouting?” began Vera in Russian.

“Vera, this afternoon I must attend a conference at her school. But I cannot be there. I have an important meeting.”

“How can you do this!” she asked.

“Why don’t you attend?” he replied.

“How can I go?”

“You are not going to a forest. You’ll be fine!”

“I know, but I can’t speak English properly. It’s an ironclad rule at her school.”

“You can manage. GO!”

She turned to Kristina, “Kristina, your father is busy. I will come instead of him.”

Kristina shouted, “Mother, you can’t speak English. How can you come to the conference? NO!” She plowed through her mother and ran sobbing. But Vera convinced Kristina. As there was no option, she agreed and left for school.

Vera was depressed. She felt that if only she knew English, she could avoid such situations.  But how is it possible for me to learn English while balancing so many tasks? Suddenly, she realized that Andrei was getting late, so she got him ready and walked him to school.

In the afternoon, Vera attended the conference at the school. All the teachers and staff were cordial to Vera. Kristina kept shushing her mother. All she said were phrases like, “You are embarrassing!”, “Stop talking!”, and “You do not know English!” Ignoring her daughter’s comments, Vera managed to keep her cool and finished the meeting.

After delivering a cake to a customer Vera went home to start dinner. At home, she asked her mother-in-law where Kristina was. She said that Kristina had gone to study with her friends. While they were talking, Kristina walked in.

Vera asked, “Why did you go out? You can study at home, you know!”

“I have doubts about English Literature. Can YOU  clarify them?” Kristina said with an arrogant tone.

Vera went to the kitchen as she sobbed quietly. Everyone thinks that kids are innocent. Is this the definition of innocence—hurting parents with an inconsiderate tone?

At dinner, Vera explained Kristina’s deplorable behavior to Vlad. But he chuckled and said, “Well, if you knew English, Kristina would not have to suffer like this.” Then he added, “This food is delicious. At least you are good at something!”

That night, Vera was tossing and turning as she thought about her hurt feelings. Like father, like daughter. If my husband won’t respect me, then how can my children respect me? I must learn English. But how is it possible with all my responsibilities?

As the months went, Vera’s nephew in London was engaged. One day, she got a call from her sister in England. Her sister pleaded Vera to come and help her with the wedding arrangements.

Vera said, “Margarita, I’d love to come, but you know that I am balancing a tight schedule.” But as Margarita requested over and over again, Vera agreed.

When Vera asked Vlad if they could go, Vlad said, “I could get a week off. I can come with the kids for the marriage. You could go now and help your sister.”

Vera worried, but Vlad said that his mom would take care of the kids.

To get to London alone was a challenge for Vera. Finally, she arrived at her sister’s home. Margarita greeted her with a warm welcome. After two days, it was New Year’s Eve. Margarita hosted a party for the bride’s family. It was really boring for Vera because she could not understand their English conversation. Then, the topic about New Year’s Resolutions came. Vera heard the words but didn’t know what to say. So, she kept quiet.

new year's resolution 5 paragraph essay

Illustration by Katherine Han, age 18, high school senior, Texas.

That night, she was thinking: Why can’t I make a resolution? What should it be? Then, an idea struck her head. I will learn English. All night, she tried to figure out how to learn English.

The next day, she saw an advert from LCC, The London Language Center, on the TV. They offered English classes to newcomers.

After her sister left, Vera called their number and gathered all the information. In the afternoon, when she went to the LLC, the receptionist said,

“The class is a four-week course; it starts in ten minutes. If you want, you can join it.” Vera paid the fee and sat in the class.

Vera didn’t tell anyone about this. Every day, she managed to attend the class when the family was away. She followed every single detail. While commuting, she’d read anything in English. She tried to communicate with her classmates in English. The instructor was impressed and encouraged her immensely.

Sometimes, Vera shared her food with her classmates. They loved her cooking and appreciated her. One day, she told them of her small cooking business. The instructor said that she was an entrepreneur.  Everyone clapped and cheered for Vera, and praised her. That made her very happy.

One day, Margarita’s daughter, Victoria, was coming back from college and saw Vera on the street. She asked her of her whereabouts. Vera explained the whole story and requested Victoria to keep it a secret. Victoria promised Vera that she’d help fulfill her New Year’s resolution. Vera received English movies from Victoria and watched them in free time. She used every single opportunity she could to immerse herself.

Vera was extremely busy and tired with all the wedding preparations and her English classes. As the wedding approached, Vlad and the children came to England. Vera was happy to see her children but worried about attending her classes. Victoria noticed her stress and asked, “Why are you looking so worried?”

“How can I attend the classes when everyone is home?”

“How many days are left?”

“Three days!”

“Don’t worry. I’ll see what I can do to help.”

The next day, Victoria went to LLC and arranged video classes for Vera. For the next two days, Vera attended her class in the bathroom! But the final test was on the actual wedding day. The test was a five-minute speech in English. If they did well, the students would receive a certificate of graduation.

Vera decided she not to attend the test. At night, Victoria noticed her sadness. “What’s wrong?” asked Victoria.

“I can’t attend the test because of the wedding. This is the end of the line for me,” said Vera.

That night, Victoria thought of an idea. Next morning, she called LLC and talked to the instructor.

Everyone was running around with joy as they busily rushed to prepare for the big gathering. Depressed, Vera also got ready. As the wedding ceremony began, she saw her teacher and classmates in the hall.

During the dinner, it was time for family members to make toasts to the bride and the groom. After Margarita, Victoria encouraged Vera to say something. Everyone started encouraging her. Before she could speak, Vlad intervened, “My wife does not know English…”

But Vera interrupted him, “Vlad, may I speak?” And before he could respond, she stood and started:

“ Meera … Kevin … Marriage is a beautiful thing. It is a special friendship between two people who are equal. Sometimes, couples don’t know how the other one feels. Family can never be judgmental. Family should never put you down, should never make you feel small. Family is the only one who will never laugh at your weaknesses. Family is the place where you will always get care and friendship. Meera and Kevin, I wish you all the best. Thank you. ”

After the speech, everyone gave a round of applause except Kristina and Vlad. They both felt shameful for having belittled Vera.

The instructor stood and said, “Vera, you passed and have graduated from the four-week English course of LLC. Excellent job!”

“How is it possible?” Vera asked.

“Victoria convinced me to grade you here. It is a surprise for you,” the instructor said.

“Thank you, Victoria, for helping me fulfill my Resolution,” said Vera.

“I know you worked very hard for this. You are great!” said Victoria.

Kristina and Vlad went to Vera and apologized. Vera was so happy she had fulfilled her New Year’s Resolution.

The family went back home to Moscow after a few days. Vera now feels,  “ With determination, anything is possible.”

—Vajra Vanukuri, age 11, grade 6, California. He adds: “I enjoy reading and I have a passion for writing stories. I like playing Soccer. I also practice Yoga, and Taekwondo, currently in the green belt. I aspire to be an environment and human rights lawyer when I grow up. ”

Ukraine-Russia Peace Is as Elusive as Ever. But in 2022 They Were Talking.

Representatives from the warring nations held peace talks in the early weeks of the Russian invasion. They fizzled. Documents from those talks show why any new ones will face major obstacles.

By Anton Troianovski ,  Adam Entous and Michael Schwirtz

new year's resolution 5 paragraph essay

A draft Ukraine-Russia treaty from April 2022, published here in full for the first time.

With Russia and Ukraine locked in their third year of all-out war, there is no clear path to military victory for either side. Nor are there immediate prospects for a ceasefire and an eventual peace plan, with both sides sticking to irreconcilable positions.

Yet the issues that would need to be tackled in any future peace settlement are evident, and in fact were at the center of negotiations two years ago that explored peace terms in remarkable detail.

Documents reviewed by The New York Times shed light on the points of disagreement that would have to be overcome.

The documents emerged from negotiating sessions that took place in the weeks after the start of the war, from February to April of 2022. It was the only time that Ukrainian and Russian officials are known to have engaged in direct peace talks.

The talks failed as both sides dug in on the battlefield, but not before negotiators produced multiple drafts of a treaty that was supposed to guarantee Ukraine’s future security while fulfilling some of President Vladimir V. Putin’s demands.

Today, even with hundreds of thousands dead and wounded, Moscow and Kyiv appear further from peace than at any other time since the full-scale invasion. On Friday, Mr. Putin said Russia would agree to a ceasefire only if Ukraine handed over four regions the Kremlin has declared part of Russia and dropped its NATO aspirations. It was essentially a demand for capitulation, which the Ukrainian government immediately denounced.

Ukraine’s current demands — a withdrawal of all Russian forces from Ukrainian territory — also appear unrealistic given Mr. Putin’s apparent resolve and his army’s current advantages. This includes the Crimean Peninsula, which Mr. Putin annexed in 2014 in a swift operation that he considers central to his legacy.

But at some point, both sides could return to the negotiating table again — a scenario that is expected to be discussed as Ukraine gathers scores of countries, though not Russia, for a peace conference in Switzerland this weekend. If and when Ukraine and Russia resume direct negotiations, the issues raised in the documents produced at the start of the war, including the status of occupied Ukrainian territories and Ukraine’s future security guarantees, would remain relevant.

Russia initially wanted Ukraine to recognize Crimea as part of Russia.

“Ukraine recognizes the Republic of Crimea and the city of Sevastopol as an integral part (subjects) of the Russian Federation and, in this regard, shall make comprehensive changes to the national legislation.”

By April 15, both sides agreed to exclude Crimea from their treaty — leaving it under Russian occupation but without Ukraine recognizing it.

“Paragraph 1 of Article 2 and Articles 4, 5 and 11 of this Treaty shall not apply to Crimea and Sevastopol.”

An examination of the documents shows that the two sides clashed over issues including weapons levels, the terms of Ukraine’s potential membership in the European Union, and specific Ukrainian laws on language and culture that Russia wanted repealed. Ukraine’s negotiators offered to forgo NATO membership, and to accept Russian occupation of parts of their territory. But they refused to recognize Russian sovereignty over them.

Ukraine proposed never joining NATO or other alliances.

“Ukraine does not join any military alliances, does not deploy foreign military bases and contingents …”

Russia demanded that Ukraine make Russian an official language.

“Ukraine, within 30 (thirty) days after signing this Treaty, shall remove all restrictions on the use of the Russian language in any area in accordance with Annex 2.”

Russia, stunned by the fierce resistance Ukraine was putting up, seemed open to such a deal, but eventually balked at its critical component: an arrangement binding other countries to come to Ukraine’s defense if it were ever attacked again.

The Sticking Points That Kept Russia and Ukraine Apart

Documents from 2022 shed new light on what prevented Ukraine and Russia from ending the war — and what would complicate a future negotiation.

At the time, little about these peace negotiations was known, and what has leaked out in the two years since has been shoehorned into wartime talking points by each side. Mr. Putin contends the West pressured Ukraine to reject a peace deal; Ukraine's Foreign Ministry says that “if Russia wanted peace in 2022, why had it attacked Ukraine in the first place?”

The Times is publishing the documents it obtained in full. They are treaty drafts dated March 17 and April 15, 2022, showing the two sides’ competing proposals and points of agreement; and a private “communiqué” at in-person talks in Istanbul on March 29 that summarized the proposed deal.

The documents were provided by Ukrainian, Russian and European sources, and confirmed as authentic by participants in the talks and other people close to them. Some aspects of these documents have emerged , but most of the material has not been previously disclosed.

In addition to reviewing the documents, The Times spent months interviewing more than a dozen Ukrainian, Russian and Western current and former officials and others close to the talks; they include three members of Ukraine’s negotiating team. Many spoke on the condition of anonymity because they were not authorized to discuss the negotiations.

“We managed to find a very real compromise,” Oleksandr Chalyi, a member of the Ukrainian negotiating team, said at a panel discussion in Geneva last December. “We were very close in the middle of April, in the end of April, to finalize our war with some peaceful settlement.”

The Talks Begin

On Feb. 28, 2022, aides to Poland’s president met a group of senior Ukrainian officials at the border and ferried them by helicopter to a military base near Belarus. The Ukrainians then entered Belarus on their own and met a delegation of Russians led by an adviser to Mr. Putin, Vladimir Medinsky.

It was an unusual moment in the history of warfare: the start of direct talks between the invaders and the invaded, just days after Europe’s biggest war of aggression in three generations had begun.

Some of the Ukrainian negotiators who spoke to The Times thought that Mr. Putin had come to the table so quickly because he never expected his army to stumble so spectacularly. But as far as they could tell, the Russians sitting across from them had little sense of how badly their troops were doing.

When Oleksii Reznikov, the Ukrainian defense minister at the time, said his side had tallied 3,000 Russian soldiers killed in action, Mr. Medinsky appeared surprised and looked over at the top Russian military official at the table.

“No, we only have 80 soldiers” killed, the military official, Aleksandr Fomin, said, Mr. Reznikov recalled.

The negotiators soon shifted to video calls, with the Ukrainians dialing in from a conference room at Mr. Zelensky’s presidential offices, Ukrainian negotiators said, or, a few times, from an underground bunker.

Ukraine made a significant concession: it was ready to become a “permanently neutral state” that would never join NATO or allow foreign forces to be based on its soil. The offer seemed to address Mr. Putin’s core grievance — that the West, in the Kremlin’s narrative, was trying to use Ukraine to destroy Russia.

An Early Draft

Though the two sides engaged in regular video sessions after meeting in Belarus, a treaty draft dated March 17 shows how far apart they remained. The Times reviewed an English-language version that Ukraine provided to Western governments.

Ukraine sought Russia’s assent to international “security guarantees,” by which other countries — including Ukrainian allies who would also sign the agreement — would come to its defense should it be attacked again. It wanted the treaty to apply to Ukraine’s “internationally recognized borders,” even as Russian troops were still trying to take Kyiv.

Ukraine wanted its allies to be treaty-bound to intervene if it was attacked again, such as by…

“…closing airspace over Ukraine, providing necessary weapons, using armed forces in order to restore and subsequently maintain the security of Ukraine as a permanently neutral state.”

The Russian team wanted Ukraine and every other treaty signatory to cancel the sanctions against Moscow they had been levying since 2014 and to publicly call on other countries to do the same. Ukraine was to cede its entire eastern Donbas region and recognize Crimea as part of Russia. A seven-point list targeted Ukraine’s national identity, including a ban on naming places after Ukrainian independence fighters.

The latter demand illustrated one of Mr. Putin’s stated rationales for going to war: he had described Ukraine as an artificial country that should be considered part of Russia.

Russia’s treaty proposals read like a laundry list of Kremlin demands, including that Kyiv-controlled parts of eastern Ukraine be ceded to Russia’s proxy “people’s republics.”

“Ukraine recognizes the independence of the Donetsk People's Republic and the Luhansk People's Republic within the administrative boundaries of the former Donetsk and Lugansk regions of Ukraine and, in this regard, shall introduce comprehensive changes to the national legislation.”

“Ukraine shall cancel and henceforth not impose, and also shall publicly call on all states and international organizations to cancel and henceforth not impose, any and all sanctions and restrictive measures imposed since 2014 against the Russian Federation.”

“Ban, with the introduction of criminal liability, the glorification and propaganda in any form of Nazism and neo-Nazism, the Nazi movement and organizations associated therewith, including holding public demonstrations and processions, construction of monuments and memorials and naming toponyms, in particular, streets, settlements and other geographical objects.”

The draft included limits on the size of the Ukrainian armed forces and the number of tanks, artillery batteries, warships and combat aircraft the country could have in its arsenal. The Ukrainians were prepared to accept such caps, but sought much higher limits.

A former senior U.S. official who was briefed on the negotiations, noting how Russian forces were being repelled across northern Ukraine, said Mr. Putin seemed to be “salivating” at the deal.

American officials were alarmed at the terms. In meetings with their Ukrainian counterparts, the senior official recalled, “We quietly said, ‘You understand this is unilateral disarmament, right?’”

Leaders in Poland — early and strong supporters of Ukraine — feared that Germany or France might try to persuade the Ukrainians to accept Russia’s terms, according to a European diplomat, and wanted to prevent that from happening.

To that end, when Poland’s president, Andrzej Duda, met with NATO leaders in Brussels on March 24, he held up the March 17 text, said the diplomat, who was present.

“Which of you would sign it?” Mr. Duda asked his counterparts, the diplomat said.

None of the NATO leaders spoke up.

A Breakthrough in Istanbul?

A few days later, on March 29, Russia and Ukraine’s representatives met at an Istanbul palace on the Bosporus. To some, the talks felt like a breakthrough driven by Russia’s battlefield struggles.

After each military setback, a member of Ukraine’s negotiating team said, Mr. Putin “reduced his demands.”

In Istanbul, the Russians seemed to endorse Ukraine’s model of neutrality and security guarantees and put less emphasis on their territorial demands. Afterward, Mr. Medinsky, Russia’s lead negotiator, said Ukraine’s offer of neutrality meant it was “ready to fulfill those principal demands that Russia insisted on for all the past years.”

Ukraine summarized the proposed deal in a two-page document it called the Istanbul Communiqué, which it never published. The status of Crimea was to be decided over a 10- or 15-year period, with Ukraine promising not to try to retake the peninsula by force; Mr. Zelensky and Mr. Putin would meet in person to finalize a peace treaty and strike a deal on how much Ukrainian territory Russia would continue to occupy.

Zelensky and Putin would meet to hash out final differences, according to the discussions in Istanbul.

“The parties consider it possible to hold a meeting on ... ... 2022 between the presidents of Ukraine and Russia with the aim to sign an agreement and/or make political decisions regarding the remaining unresolved issues.”

The communiqué, provided to The Times by a Ukrainian negotiator, described a mechanism in which other countries would intervene militarily if Ukraine were attacked again — a concept that the Ukrainians pointedly designated as Article 5, a reference to the mutual defense agreement in Article 5 of the NATO treaty.

To the Ukrainians, binding security guarantees were at the core of a potential peace deal that multiple countries would sign on to.

“Possible guarantor states: Great Britain, China, Russia, the United States, France, Turkey, Germany, Canada, Italy, Poland, Israel.”

“The Guarantor States and Ukraine agree that in the event of aggression, any armed attack on Ukraine or any military operation against Ukraine, each of the Guarantor States, after urgent and immediate consultations between them … will provide … assistance to Ukraine, as a permanently neutral state under attack…”

But Russian officials sent mixed signals in public on whether the Kremlin was really ready to sign onto the deal. The Russians and Ukrainians returned to hourslong negotiating sessions by video call, exchanging treaty drafts via WhatsApp, negotiators said.

In early April, after Russia withdrew from the outskirts of Kyiv, images of massacred civilians in the suburb of Bucha, some with their hands tied with white cloth, shocked the world. For Ukrainians, the idea that their country could strike a compromise with Russia seemed more remote than ever.

But Mr. Zelensky, visiting Bucha on April 4, said the talks would go on, even as Russia dismissed the Bucha atrocities as a staged “provocation.”

Daniel Berehulak for The New York Times

“Colleagues, I spoke to RA,” Ukraine’s lead negotiator, Davyd Arakhamia, wrote on April 10 in a WhatsApp message to the Ukrainian team. “He spoke yesterday for an hour and a half with his boss.”

“RA” was Roman Abramovich, the Russian billionaire who played a behind-the-scenes role in the talks. His “boss,” Mr. Putin, was urging the negotiators to concentrate on the key issues and work through them quickly, Mr. Arakhamia wrote. (A member of the WhatsApp group showed that message and others to reporters for The Times.)

A spokesperson for Mr Abramovich said his role “was limited to introducing representatives from both parties to each other” and that following that initial stage, he “was not involved in the process.”

Mr. Arakhamia’s message suggested that Mr. Putin was micromanaging not only Russia’s invasion, but also its peace talks. At another point, Russia’s lead negotiator, Mr. Medinsky, interrupted a video conference by claiming that Mr. Putin was phoning him directly.

“The boss is calling,” Mr. Medinsky said, according to two Ukrainian negotiators.

Mr. Putin’s involvement and intentions during the 2022 talks were subjects of debate in Kyiv and Washington, Ukrainian and American officials said. Was he truly interested in a deal? Or was he merely trying to bog Ukraine down while his troops regrouped?

new year's resolution 5 paragraph essay

There were signs that Mr. Putin was micromanaging not only the Russian invasion but also the peace talks.

Nanna Heitmann for The New York Times

“We didn’t know if Putin was serious,” said the former senior U.S. official. “We couldn’t tell, on either side of the fence, whether these people who were talking were empowered.”

One Ukrainian negotiator said he believed the negotiations were a bluff on Mr. Putin’s part, but two others described them as serious.

On April 15, five days after Mr. Abramovich told the Ukrainians about his meeting with Mr. Putin, the Russian negotiators sent a 17-page draft treaty to their president’s desk.

Sticking Points

Similar to the month-earlier version, the April 15 draft includes text in red highlighting issues in dispute. But such markings are almost entirely absent from the treaty’s first pages, where points of agreement emerged.

Negotiators agreed that Ukraine would declare itself permanently neutral, though it would be allowed to join the European Union.

Russia dropped its earlier objections to Ukraine’s full-fledged E.U. membership.

“The Parties to this Treaty share the understanding that Ukraine's status as a permanently neutral state is, subject to the provisions of this Treaty, compatible with Ukraine's possible membership in the European Union.”

Much of the treaty would “not apply” to Crimea and another to-be-determined swath of Ukraine — meaning that Kyiv would accept Russian occupation of part of its territory without recognizing Russian sovereignty over it.

But crucial sticking points remained. Russia wanted the firing range of Ukraine’s missiles to be limited to 25 miles, while Ukraine wanted 174 miles — enough to hit targets across Crimea. Russia still wanted Ukraine to repeal laws related to language and national identity, and to pull back Ukrainian troops as part of a cease-fire.

Russia’s ceasefire proposal declared that Ukraine would need to withdraw its troops on its own territory.

“Ukraine carries out the withdrawal (return) of units of its armed forces, other armed formations, weapons and military equipment to places of permanent deployment or to places agreed upon with the Russian Federation.”

The biggest problem, however, came in Article 5. It stated that, in the event of another armed attack on Ukraine, the “guarantor states” that would sign the treaty — Great Britain, China, Russia, the United States and France — would come to Ukraine’s defense.

new year's resolution 5 paragraph essay

Laetitia Vancon for The New York Times

To the Ukrainians’ dismay, there was a crucial departure from what Ukrainian negotiators said was discussed in Istanbul. Russia inserted a clause saying that all guarantor states, including Russia, had to approve the response if Ukraine were attacked. In effect, Moscow could invade Ukraine again and then veto any military intervention on Ukraine’s behalf — a seemingly absurd condition that Kyiv quickly identified as a dealbreaker.

Russia tried to secure a veto on Ukraine’s security guarantees by inserting a clause requiring unanimous consent.

“The Guarantor States and Ukraine agree that in the event of an armed attack on Ukraine, each of the Guarantor States … on the basis of a decision agreed upon by all Guarantor States , will provide … assistance to Ukraine, as a permanently neutral state under attack…”

With that change, a member of the Ukrainian negotiating team said, “we had no interest in continuing the talks.”

Two years later, there are still no signs that Russia and Ukraine might return to the negotiating table. At a Swiss resort this weekend, Mr. Zelensky will seek to persuade dignitaries from about 100 countries and organizations, including Vice President Kamala Harris, that victory remains realistic.

Russia is not invited, and China, its most powerful partner, opted not to attend . Mr. Zelensky has pledged to keep fighting, describing his peace plan as one in which Russia withdraws from all of Ukraine’s territory, pays reparations and is punished for war crimes.

“If we don’t make progress this year, then we will try again next year,” Mr. Zelensky privately told a European counterpart recently, according to a European diplomat who was present. “And if we don’t make progress next year, we will try again the following year, and the one after that.”

new year's resolution 5 paragraph essay

Daniel Berehulak/The New York Times

Mr. Putin in recent months stepped up efforts to stoke Western divisions by portraying peace as having been within reach in 2022 — and saying he was prepared to restart those talks. Ukraine’s leaders have dismissed Mr. Putin’s statements on the subject as deception.

“Putin is a habitual liar, and his recent rants are no exception,” Ukraine’s foreign ministry said in a statement.

Mr. Putin shifted to a harder line on Friday, insisting that he would order a cease-fire and negotiate only if Ukraine withdrew from the four regions that Moscow has claimed as its own and dropped its aspirations to join NATO.

Even before Mr. Putin’s latest demand, experts said it was hard to imagine going back to the kind of deal discussed in 2022. Ukraine is more determined than ever to join NATO, a message it will reinforce when leaders of the alliance meet in Washington next month.

Instead, the more likely end to the fighting could be an uneasy truce. Marc Weller, a Cambridge international law professor who specializes in peace negotiations, said he expected leading Western countries to focus on defending Ukraine’s future battle line with Russia “rather than seek accommodation across it.”

“The Iron Curtain will now fall on the line of occupation administered by the Russians across Ukraine,” Mr. Weller said.
