The ‘Global Village’
The concept of the ‘global village’ was first introduced by Marshall McLuhan in his book ‘Understanding Media: the extensions of man (1964)’ . McLuhan argued that new media technologies, such as television and the internet, were collapsing time and space, creating a more interconnected world that he referred to as the global village.
According to McLuhan, the global village was characterized by a sense of connectedness and interdependence, as people around the world were increasingly able to communicate and interact with one another in real-time. He believed that this was a revolutionary development that had important implications for human consciousness and culture .
One of the key features of the global village was the way in which it transcended traditional boundaries of space and time . McLuhan argued that new media technologies had the ability to ‘annihilate distance’, making it possible for people to communicate and exchange information across vast distances in real-time. This had important implications for international relations, as it made it possible for people from different cultures and backgrounds to communicate and interact with one another in ways that were previously impossible.
Another important feature of the global village was the way in which it created a sense of global consciousness . McLuhan argued that new media technologies were creating a shared understanding of the world , as people from different cultures and backgrounds were exposed to the same information and ideas. This had important implications for the way in which people viewed themselves and their place in the world, as it encouraged a sense of global community and interdependence.
Overall, the concept of the global village has had a profound impact on the way in which we understand the role of media and technology in shaping human consciousness and culture . It has encouraged us to think critically about the ways in which new media technologies are transforming our world, and to consider the implications of these changes for our lives and communities. McLuhan’s ideas about the global village continue to be relevant today, as we navigate a rapidly changing world that is increasingly interconnected and interdependent.

The global village in international communication
2014, Leanne Carter
Today, we live in a world where media and globalisation has brought us together to share and communicate through advanced technologies. Globalisation has enabled the changing role of geography and physical distance to become interconnected. It has also provided the means of instantaneous communication breaking down time and distance. Globalisation is often referred to as a “process rather than an outcome since” it has enabled production, trade and finance (Flew 2007). It is conceptualised in economic, political and cultural globalisation. However, it is through the linking of information technologies, that McLahan's (1962) belief created a global village which allowed people to live in an interconnected community on a global scale. In today's world media and globalisation brings people together, linking them geographically enabling them to share and acquire information. Although the term global implies that information is accessible everywhere and to everyone, some would argue that this is not necessarily true. Distribution is imbalanced in some parts of the world because it is socially and economically given. Furthermore, one implication of the global village is that the spread of global culture has become homogenised at a global level. This is associated with American imperialism through materialistic culture and consumerism. Moreover, it is argued that the content of Western media still dominates western values into non-western countries that produce their own media content as it is still largely controlled by overseas corporations. Today's notion of the global village is not fulfilled, as it hold inequalities in the spread of information technologies and telecommunications.

Looking at the concept differently, globalization- which is the result of technological, ideological, political, social and economic transformations- can possibly be seen as the reason social borders now remain only at a geographical level. This is due to the common benefits of perceiving the world as being as small as a village. The perception of the world as a “Global Village” in McLuhan’s expression, points out the importance of communication in the globalization process. Communication –making people understand each other: socialize and compromise; by the common codes- emerges as a mediatory factor providing social and inter-communal convention. This study shows the role and the significance of communication in the area of social/cultural convention’s formation and development. The main characteristic of globalization is that it results in social and cultural change and transformation, immediately, in all senses, and in any field of life; as well as in relation to economics and t...

Communication of countries with each other was very difficult due to geographic reasons. globalization, even those distant from each other, are interlinked and influence each other, the effect of which is to produce a change in the structure of the economy, various cultures and societies of the world. Technologies used to communicate and its effects have been felt across the planet. In a nutshell, communicating globally means sending and receiving information all around the Earth. From a different perspective, globalization merely implies the coalescence of different societies in matters of culture, politics, ethics, ideas and other areas fundamental to human societies. Multinational communication has become easier and thus seems to develop closer bonds. The theory of cultural hybridization proposes that interacting cultures take from and absorb each other's features , resulting in a hybrid form based on synergy. The case appears strongest when examining popular music. This viewpoint focuses on the exchange of cultural features and their absorption into another culture's way of doing things. Analogously to hybrid formation in nature , which involves the exchange of genetic material, so, the theory goes, society's practices are formed from a fusion of elements taken from multiple different cultures.

Global village, essay: world as global village: learning to live together, essay pages: 1 | 2 | 3.
Considering the dimensions of global village, the economic integration has brought the world closer and dependable on each other. Multinational companies, global economic forums and cross-border investments; all play vital role in making the world a global village.
Political integration of the world states which helps to unite global village becomes obvious at the platform of the United Nations. This institution has 193 member states which discuss and decide upon all the important political events of international prospects. International political security, regional and global alliances against terrorism, international treaties on nuclear non-proliferation; all reveal the political integration of the global village.
Another important aspect of global village is socio-cultural integration. It is the mixing of cultural values and customs to evolve the new ones. Apparent manifestation of socio-cultural integration in the global village comes in the shape of fashion, traditions and practices one adopts after getting inspired by another culture through books and movies most of the times.
These all aspects of globalization render the global village to learn to live together. This becomes possible when the world states interact and find mutual interests. Those interests might be political, economic or social.
Multinational organizations and global institutions represent another manifestation of how the world is learning to live together. European Union, for example, represents togetherness of the European nations. Similarly, ASEAN is the association of South East Asian nations for attaining definite economic goals. In South Asia SAARC emerges to be an organization for regional cooperation. IMF and the World Bank bring the world closer in monetary aspects. Muslim states of the world form OIC as their distinct body. NATO is a military alliance of European and American nations. Thus, in all ways, world states practice the art of living together for the obvious reasons.
Recently two important developments in the global political context occurred that reflect how the nations are learning to live together. First came the nuclear deal between Iran and P5+1. Iran and the US had been at daggers drawn since the Iranian Revolution of 1979. The country also went to develop nuclear weapons secretly unless came to the knowledge of international community. This led to the beginning of talks between Iran and the Permanent Five members of the UN Security Council along with Germany.

global communication is that being linked to everyone leaves many people feeling overwhelmed and without a personal iden-tity. The response is violence.
