What is the XAT Essay Writing Test?

XAT essay writing section is very similar to the Written Ability Test (WAT) which is conducted by IIMs. However, the only difference is that all XAT takers have to do the essay section in the exam, while only the shortlisted candidates appear for the WAT round.

One must remember that the percentile score does not include essay performance. But worry not, as the essay score does carry some weightage in the calculation of the final merit and it varies from college to college.

XAT Essay Writing Evaluation Parameters đź“„

The main objective behind giving the XAT essay writing section is to evaluate the candidates based on their ability to think logically. The examiner tests the candidates’ ability to express themselves effectively. Speaking of which, we have listed the evaluation parameters for your essay as follows:

Structure of Essay 🏗️

In the essay, the first thing that the examiner checks is whether the essay flows logically or not from one paragraph to another. If the candidate has not logically stated their arguments in chronological order then there are chances of marks deduction. Keep in mind that proper structuring of sentences will fetch you marks.

Knowledge 🧠

Part 1 of the essay tests your subject knowledge while Part 2 of the essay tests if you are aware of the ongoing debates in the public media as well as important events, personalities, laws etc.

All the facts incorporated in your essay need to have some weightage to earn marks.

Creativity đź’ˇ

As future managers, the candidates need to produce new ideas as part of their job. Hence, the evaluators will expect your essay to be full of innovative ideas.

Lastly, you must keep in mind that you don’t make any grammatical mistakes like spelling errors, or punctuation errors as there will be a penalty.

XAT 2024 Preparation Strategy (Section-wise)

The XAT exam is distinct from the CAT exam. While the subjects covered are mostly similar, the exams themselves have completely different characteristics. However, candidates can make small adjustments to their preparation to succeed in the XAT exam. Now, let’s take a look at a basic preparation plan for the XAT exam:

Divide Your Preparation Plan Into Two Phases

  • In the first phase , focus on grasping the basics of all three sections. Dedicate sufficient time to learn and fully comprehend the fundamental concepts. It is crucial to have a strong foundation because, without it, you won’t be able to enhance your mock scores in the later stages of your preparation.
  • During the second phase, it is crucial to prioritize taking more XAT mock tests . Keep in mind that XAT is not a test of speed (you will have slightly more than 2 minutes per question). Additionally, there is no sectional time limit for the XAT exam. Therefore, candidates need to adjust their preparation approach to score well. Those who have practised a significant number of standard questions are likely to perform better in the exam. Hence, it is important to take more XAT Mocks to become accustomed to the test format. After each mock test, analyze the time spent on each section and question. Candidates should focus on enhancing their accuracy to improve their performance.

Let us see the section-wise preparation strategy for the XAT exam.

How To Prepare For XAT Verbal And Logical Ability?

The verbal section in XAT is slightly different from the CAT VARC section. The reading comprehension is relatively smaller; however, the questions are of similar difficulty levels. The verbal ability questions are usually from a wide range of topics. Aspirants must refresh their basic grammar since questions from these topics are also tested.

This section of the exam had a few summary questions as well. XAT is also known for poem-based short passages. Therefore, aspirants must practice all the RCs from past year papers  to get hold of the section.

How To Prepare For XAT Quantitative Aptitude?

The XAT Quantitative Ability (QA) section has a slight difference compared to the CAT quant section. The questions in XAT QA tend to be a bit longer and require a strong grasp of concepts above all else. As a result, candidates should prioritize strengthening their foundational knowledge. Solving questions from previous year’s papers is an excellent method to become familiar with the types and levels of difficulty of questions in this section. Topics such as Arithmetic, Geometry, Algebra, Number Systems, and Probability & Combinations are among the many concepts tested. Therefore, it is important for aspirants to dedicate extra effort when revising these topics.

While not as challenging as those found in CAT, the Data Interpretation (DI) questions in XAT can be a bit tricky to solve. These questions often involve a large amount of data and have been known to test basic statistical concepts in previous years. Therefore, it is advisable for candidates to review fundamental statistical concepts, such as variance, standard deviation, and so on, before the exam. This will help them better handle the DI questions and increase their chances of solving them correctly.

How to Prepare for XAT Decision Making?

This section is exclusive to XAT and is often considered the deciding factor of the exam. It presents a distinctive scenario involving business problems, ethical dilemmas, hiring decisions, and more, where candidates need to make a choice. While many candidates acknowledge the importance of this section, only a few are able to adequately prepare for it. However, with proper preparation, this section is not difficult to overcome.

Past XAT papers are one of the top resources for preparing for the Decision Making (DM) section. This section requires extensive practice, so aspirants should aim to solve the DM sets from all the previous XAT papers . Instead of solely focusing on getting the answers correct, the emphasis should be on understanding what makes an option the right choice. Aspirants need to analyze why a particular option is more suitable compared to the others (making relative comparisons). Therefore, the main focus should be on developing the required thinking process.

It’s important to keep in mind that XAT imposes a penalty for skipping questions beyond a certain limit. However, the penalty is not severe, so there’s no need to worry excessively about it. Aspirants should focus on carefully attempting the questions without fear of the penalty.

How to Prepare for XAT General Knowledge Section?

Even though XLRI does not officially consider General Knowledge (GK) scores when issuing calls, they do hold some undisclosed importance in the final selection process. Therefore, aspirants should still prepare for this section to increase their chances of success.

In the GK section, there is no penalty for incorrect answers, similar to the GK section of IIFT. To prepare for this section, aspirants should focus on refreshing their knowledge of current affairs. They can refer to GK compendiums to cover the static GK part of the exam.

Essay Writing in XAT Exam

The Xavier School of Management administers the XAT exam annually. The XAT is a management entrance exam that allows qualified candidates to enrol in XLRI Jamshedpur’s MBA and PGDM programs. The XAT exam includes an essay writing section, which is frequently combined with the General Knowledge section, and applicants are given 40 minutes to complete both. Candidates often find the Essay Writing in XAT exam  the most difficult of all, with concerns primarily about the essay’s subjects and how to deliver it in the allocated time.

However, it is important to note that XLRI has eliminated the Essay Writing section of the XAT 2022 exam. The XAT Exam 2022 will consist of three sections: an online objective test, a group discussion, and a personal interview.

Essay Writing In XAT Exam

The XAT essay writing test was originally paper-based, but XLRI converted it to an online computer-based test following computerisation. The Xavier Labor Relations Institute has administered the XAT exam for decades. But they recently announced a significant alteration to the exam format, which has caused quite a stir on the internet.

XLRI has removed the essay section from the XAT exam. However, the scoring methodology has not changed. In the XAT, the essay writing test has been replaced by multiple-choice questions worth one mark each.

Essay Writing Topics For XAT Exam

In the previous XAT exams, the essay topics were mostly abstract ideas, social issues, or sometimes based on current events. While the essay topics may appear simple, candidates are frequently unaware of how to articulate their ideas in 200 words within the time limit when writing an essay.

The XAT essay subjects were twisted, and they appeared to be abstract topics that asked for your opinion rather than concrete facts. XAT Essays intended to touch the lives of ordinary people and the difficulties they faced regularly.  The following are some XAT Essay Topics that have appeared in prior years’ XAT exams:

To provide genuine service, one must include qualities that cannot be bought or evaluated, such as honesty and integrity.

At the age of 83, Frank Lloyd Wright was asked which of his projects he would choose as his masterwork, and he replied, “The next one.”

More than a billion Indians: a massive challenge or a plethora of possibilities?

India has one of the most talented workforces in the world, yet few patents and breakthroughs.

Is it a mirage or a reality to have economic progress without causing environmental damage?

A gender imbalance would trigger the Third World War.

Capitalism’s intrinsic fault is the unequal distribution of blessings, while Socialism’s inherent virtue equals the distribution of misery.

Earth has enough to meet everyone’s needs, but not everyone’s greed.

Due to the vast extent of poverty, the government is unable to implement policies efficiently.

The main cause of India’s economic decline is corruption.

The most beautiful thing is something that can’t be seen or touched but only felt.

Listening is a skill that is becoming increasingly rare. We don’t pay attention long enough to comprehend. We only pay attention when someone is attempting to deny or respond to something.

How To Write Essay For XAT Exam

Know Your Syllabus Well

The syllabus has minute details of the sections from which the different questions will be framed for the test paper.

Familiarity with the XAT 2025 Exam Pattern

Knowing the exam pattern is another important part of the preparation plan. The  XAT 2025 exam pattern deals with the structure of the question paper. It tells the candidates how the paper looks by defining factors like the number of questions per section, the total number of questions, marks per question, total marks, time duration, negative marking, and format of the paper. If the candidate is aware of these factors then he/she can divide the syllabus according to the exam pattern and start studying the portions giving equal weight to each section of the syllabus. This in return will also help candidates in scoring good marks for XAT 2025.

Create a Study Plan

Candidates must start the preparation by creating a study plan. It is very important for candidates to plan out the vast syllabus of XAT 2025 to cover everything well. A good study plan will help candidates get through the syllabus in a smooth and easy manner, as it will make space for every subject and the sections that must be covered for the test.

Focus on the Concept

A clear concept is very important for every subject and topic that we study. If the candidates have understood the concept of a particular subject or topic then studying and memorizing that subject or topic becomes easy and quick. It is very important for candidates to focus more on understanding the subject matter first and then start practicing it. Understanding the concept of the subject works best for the subjects that need to be solved in steps.

Learn Time Management

Time management is very important for competitive exams like XAT 2025. If candidates fail to handle the allotted time duration for completing the exam paper then they might lose their chance of getting selected for the best management institution. Similarly, if the candidates fail to complete their syllabus on time then sitting for the examination will become a tough task for them. Therefore, experts advise that candidates must manage their time by making a timetable for the purpose of exam preparation. This will help them cover the entire syllabus on time and will also give candidates time to revise the chapters well before appearing for the examination. Time management can also be conquered by following the exam pattern at the time of practice sessions. All that is required is to be quick and easy with the questions on the main exam day and this can be achieved only by following the time duration, keeping the exam pattern in mind.

Make Short Notes

This is one of the most effective ways to cover the difficult topics of the XAT 2025 syllabus. Making short notes is also a fun task to do. Candidates can cut short a huge topic in a number of short notes or pointers which will help them go through the topic in an easy manner. Short notes will lighten the burden of the vast syllabus and will encourage candidates to read the entire topic quickly.

Take Tests Regularly

Candidates must take tests on a regular basis so that they are aware of the pattern that they are about to face at the time of examination. Taking tests on a regular basis will also help candidates to revise what they have studied and will also help them to know what they need to study more. It will help candidates to know their weaker sections and the sections that need more practice and focus.

Seek Guidance From Experts

One of the best ways to deal with the syllabus and the examination is to seek help and guidance from experts. These experts can be your teachers, parents, seniors, and friends. You must not hesitate to seek help from any available source or person that you think can help you go through the syllabus. These people can help you understand the concept of a topic/subject or can also help you understand the pattern and structure of the examination that you are about to face.

Self-study and coaching are two beneficial ways to prepare for the XAT 2025 exam, however, candidates can go for any of the two keeping their convenience in mind. CollegeDekho has captured the highlights of Self Study vs Coaching below in order to make it easy for the applicants to make a choice.

A few coaching institutes provide online coaching while others require the applicant to be physically present in a centre to take the XAT Coaching.

It can be done from anywhere and everywhere. Candidates can easily study from the convenience of their own homes.

Coaching Institutes often curate a study plan and provide it to the candidates. It decreases the workload on them and all they have to do is stay dedicated and focused.

Candidates have the advantage of crafting a study plan as per their requirements. They can keep their weak & strong areas, pace, and learning abilities in mind before chalking out a plan of study.

Most of the coaching institutes offer sample papers, mock tests, and practice problems to the students which saves them from trouble. Applicants have to carry their own books for classes.

Applicants are required to look out for the best options available in online and offline mode and have to pick up the most relevant ones which is quite a task. Guidance of teachers and the recommendation of toppers need to be considered before making a decision.

Candidates have to pay for the institute and books. The sample papers, directions, and techniques are provided by the center itself which prove to be very beneficial eventually.

Applicants only have to pay for the study materials. Candidates are saved from paying the tuition fee and travel fee.

Coaching centres/ institutes keep the student updated on the constant exam developments.

Applicants are required to keep visiting reliable and official sources time and again to keep an eye on the regular exam developments.

The coaching institutes often move at a very fast pace and those who are successful in keeping up with the speed have a high chance of cracking the exam.

The candidates are free to create their own guidelines and timelines. They can keep the grasping power, learning pace, and strengths/weaknesses in mind before deciding how much time to allocate to each topic.

While taking the coaching for XAT, applicants come in contact with a dozen other candidates which gives them a sense of competition and provides them with an understanding of their preparation level.

An individual is his/her own competition and needs to evaluate his/her performance regularly. They are required to work on weak areas and keep striving for excellence.

XAT 2025 preparation tips by XAT previous year toppers can provide useful insights regarding what the XAT 2025 aspirants have to do to secure the maximum highest marks. The XAT previous year toppers preparation tips can help the candidates narrow down the list of do’s and don'ts to secure the best possible marks. According to the XAT previous year toppers, the XAT 2025 aspirants have to:

Be thorough with XAT 2025 exam pattern and XAT 2025 syllabus.

Solve XAT previous year papers and XAT 2025 mock test papers to segregate the strong areas from the weak ones.

Dedicate at least 3 hours daily for XAT 2025 preparation.

Focus more on the XAT Decision Making (DM) section.

Practice more Data Interpretation (DI) questions as it always consumes more time.

Dedicate separate hours for strengthening the weaker areas.

Stop learning anything new at least 15 days before the exam starts.

The toppers and experts also suggest that students who have a separate 6 month and 3-month preparation plan are the ones who are most likely to succeed in the XAT 2025 entrance exam. So, CollegeDekho has prepared a 6 month and 3-month preparation strategy based on tips given by the XAT previous year toppers and XAT experts:

No matter how well you are prepared for the exam, if you forget to pay attention to last-minute instructions, chances are you might ruin your exam. So, to ensure you have the best experience and don't face any trouble, we have listed some last-minute tips which must be followed by every candidate.

The first and most important thing test-takers must do is to assemble all the necessary documents like XAT 2025 Admit Card and Identity Proof a night before the exam so that they do not miss out on taking these documents with them to the centre.

Remember to carry only the documents that have been asked for and not the ones that might create trouble at the exam centre.

Candidates must also check the centre of the examination a day before the main examination, so that, they may reach the correct exam centre on time.

Check without your transport, distance, and estimated time to reach the venue, so that, you do not reach late.

Stay calm and avoid unwanted conversations a day before the examination. This will help you recollect all your facts and figures and will help you gain confidence for the day of the examination.

A healthy mind can conquer the world, and this is what exactly you need to do while preparing for the examination and revising your syllabus.

Take good care of your health and eat your meals on time, without avoiding food and taste. If you are unwell and your stomach is empty then you will not be able to concentrate on the examination.

Listen to the instructions disseminated at the centre carefully and follow it the way it has been told.

Reach the XAT examination centre an hour before the allotted time.

Remember not to be in a hurry to solve all the questions. First, solve the ones that you have confidence in and then solve the tricky ones. Also, remember that your every wrong answer will deduct 0.25 marks.

FAQs about XAT Preparation Tips

You should try to solve at least 4-5 problems of all types of questions. Besides this, you are also advised to learn short cut ways to solve any problem so that you can complete all the questions within the time allotted. Try to clear all the concepts so that your accuracy increases.

It will take around four to six months to prepare for XAT. The preparation time for the XAT will vary depending on the current level of preparation, academic background, familiarity with the exam format, the target score or percentile, and strengths and weaknesses. During this time, students can cover the syllabus thoroughly, practice extensively, and take multiple mock tests. Those who are already familiar with the type of questions will require 2-3 months of focused preparation. 1 to 2 months of revision and practice is enough for candidates undergoing extensive preparation.

You are advised to be confident while attempting the questions of the XAT exams, hence, start with the sections you are most comfortable with. Since XAT has negative marking for incorrect answers, if you are unsure about an answer, it's often better to skip it than to guess and risk losing marks. Do not forget to review and recheck your answers in each section. You are also advised to reach the examination centre one hour before the exam so that you can get comfortable with the environment.

No, coaching is not necessary to clear the XAT exam. You can clear the exam by self-preparation if you are highly self-disciplined, motivated, and can stick to a structured study plan on your own. If you have strong foundational knowledge of the subjects tested in the XAT (Verbal Ability, Quantitative Ability, Decision Making, etc.), you may not need coaching to prepare for the exam. There are several study materials available in the market. You can also download the notes available on the internet to get some additional help for exam preparation.

You should prepare multiple choice questions from all four sections of the XAT exam. You can refer to the mock test papers and previous years’ question papers to know what type of questions will be asked in the exam and prepare accordingly.

To clear the XAT exam, you should practice lots of questions of different difficulty levels to analyze your strengths and weaknesses. Improve your reading comprehension skills and vocabulary. Develop a structured approach to solve questions based on Decision-Making. Revise the basic mathematical concepts and formulae. Also, you should make a proper study schedule and make notes along with your exam preparation. These notes will help you revise all the important points before going for the exam.

Yes, if you prepare for the exam with good dedication and hard work then 6 months are enough for XAT preparation. You should make a solid preparation strategy involving understanding the concepts, rigorous practice of question papers, and improving quick thinking skills. You may need less time for preparation if you have strong foundational knowledge in the key areas tested in the XAT, such as mathematics, language skills, and logical reasoning. Develop a well-structured study plan that covers all the topics and sections of the XAT syllabus and allocate time to each section based on your strengths and weaknesses. Additionally, practise regularly and take mock tests to assess your progress.

Previous years question papers of XAT will help you understand what type of questions will be asked in the exam. They are important tools to accelerate your preparation by showing you a proper direction to study for the XAT exam. It is imperative to practice as many previous year papers as possible to assess your preparation level.

You can start preparing for the XAT exam by checking all the important topics mentioned in the exam syllabus. Start your preparation by revising and strengthening your basics in mathematics, language skills, and logical reasoning. After that, you prepare a schedule so that you can divide the time equally among all the sections. If possible, take daily mock tests and solve previous year question papers and sample papers to gauge your preparation.

There is no fixed time to start the preparation for the XAT exam. The earlier, the better. If you are starting from scratch, you are advised to start the preparation at least 6-7 months before the exam so that you can easily cover every topic of the syllabus and then revise it. It will also leave enough room to practice the previous year questions and mock tests. If you already have a reasonable level of proficiency in the areas from which questions are asked in the XAT exam and can dedicate 2 to 3 months of focused preparation, you can achieve a good score. After extensive preparation, 1 to 2 months of revision and practice is also enough.

XAT Preparation 2024: Points to Remember

XAT is considered to be tougher than CAT, CMAT, SNAP. Hence, merely preparing for CAT is not adequate for cracking XAT. Students who are planning to apply for XAT 2024   must focus on preparing for sections based on their strengths and weaknesses. Going through the previous year’s  XAT exam analysis   will also be quite helpful. The first and foremost step in XAT exam preparation is having a clear understanding of the revised XAT exam pattern and syllabus:

Part Section  Number of Questions XAT Syllabus Marking Scheme Time Limit
Part 1 Verbal and Logical Ability 26 Critical and Analytical Reasoning, Vocabulary, Reading Comprehension, Logical Deductions 165 minutes
Decision Making 21 Caselet study, Data Arrangement, Decision making in a given scenario, Ethical Dilemma
Quantitative Ability and Data Interpretation 28 Mensuration, Algebra, Geometry, Number System, Arithmetic
Part 2 General Knowledge 25 Static GK and Current Affairs 25 minutes
Essay 1 Short Essay of 250 words on 1 of the 2 given topics To be evaluated for candidates shortlisted for PI

  • An on-screen calculator facility will not be available for XAT 2024.
  • Candidates can attempt the question in any order, there is no sectional time limit to attempt the questions.
  • 8 questions can be left unanswered, after that, every unattempted question will fetch you a negative mark of 0.10.
  • The sectional time limit for part 1 of the exam is 165 minutes and 25 minutes for part 2.
  • Additional sections like general knowledge and decision making are added in XAT, unlike other competitive management exams.

8 Top Law School Final Exam Tips

Last Updated: Aug 28, 2024

What to expect from your law school final exams

A full semester of taking copious notes, reading, briefing, outlining, classroom discussions, and surviving the Socratic Method culminates in one final act. Writing law school final exams.

Most professors give essay exams for law school finals. Some are single-topic, short-answer questions. Others can go on for pages — known as issue-spotter exams. Some are taken in class, while others are take-home, allowing students more than the traditional amount of time to answer the essay questions. There are open-book and closed-book exams. And there are those few professors who create multiple-choice exams or (in rare cases) give oral exams.

Whatever type of exam your professor chooses to administer, you will be tested on your ability to analyze and resolve legal problems and demonstrate your grasp of the materials. Your course grade will be largely, if not exclusively, based on your final exam performance.

Here are some high-level tips to help you prepare for your law school finals.

Law professor stands in an empty class before law school final exams

Understand your professor preferences

The foundation for success on your law school finals is to know who is grading the exam. Your mission is to make that person’s life easier. Ultimately, different professors prefer different types of answers. Some want extreme detail — every possible interpretation of every possible fact. Some like answers straight to the point within a page count. It’s okay to ask your professor.

It’s a given that all professors expect well-organized, legible answers, no matter how brief or expansive.

Read the facts carefully

Read the entire problem through once rather quickly to get a general understanding. Focus on the question you are being asked to respond to at the end of the problem.

Then, read through the scenario again, slowly and carefully. This time, evaluate every word and phrase to identify all potential issues. Applying the law to the facts presented is critical in any law school exam. And changing the facts even slightly could result in a completely different result.

A law student takes a law school final exam

Answer the question that is being asked

Always keep in mind the specific question you are actually being asked to answer. Although you may receive credit for ancillary information provided in your answer, you will only receive maximum credit if you specifically answer the question that is presented. Therefore, you must determine what role the professor is asking you to assume before answering. Are you the defendant’s attorney, or do you represent the plaintiff? Are you a judge trying to resolve the dispute? It makes a real difference in how you answer.

Attempts to include unrelated material in your answer could backfire if your professor believes you are incapable of ruling out irrelevant information.

Organize your thoughts

Organization is critical to writing a strong essay answer on any law school finals. After all, if the professor cannot follow your analysis, how can they grade it fairly and appropriately?

Before you start writing, chart the issues in the manner in which you will resolve them. Again, make sure the issues are related to the actual question you are being asked to answer. Arrange the issues in the sequence in which you would expect a court to address them (i.e., normally jurisdictional issues first, then liability, then remedies). Capture the points you will discuss in sufficient detail to prompt you to think the problem through to a fair and practical solution.

Complete your analysis and organization before you start writing

You may find that you devote a solid one-fourth of the time allocated to reading, analyzing the problem and organizing your answer. That’s okay. A logical organization and clear expression of ideas will strengthen your answer. This purposeful approach may even bolster an answer that’s somewhat weak.

A law student sits in a classroom with other students while taking a law school final exam

Use the IRAC format for each issue raised

As you begin to write out your answer, we recommend you analyze each dispute using the IRAC method.

First, state the issue in precise legal terms (i.e., “Did the defendant’s mistake in computing his bid prevent the formation of an enforceable contract?”). Be careful to avoid generalizations or oversimplification of the issue.

Next, state the applicable law. Be sure to define the pertinent elements of a rule as well as any terms of art.

Application

Then, apply the rules to the facts using arguments. Avoid the common error of stating a rule and then jumping straight to the conclusion. Your professor will not infer a supporting argument for you — you must spell it out. Remember to use the Issue T you created earlier to remind you to discuss which facts in the fact pattern support (or prevent) application of the rule. Discuss and weigh each fact given and the logical inference to be drawn from it. Be sure to include counterarguments where possible.

Finally, come to a straightforward conclusion on each issue. Make sure you have clearly answered the question asked, and you have not left an issue hanging. If a number of outcomes are possible, discuss the merits of each, but always select one position as your conclusion and state why. In close cases, it is generally best to select the most practical and fair conclusion. Just don’t consider yourself bound by the “general rule” or “majority view” in answering on a law school final exam unless the question clearly calls for such.

Argue both sides of legal issues you spot and remember policy concerns

Once a dispute has been framed and a legal theory has been asserted, identify any problems surrounding the theory’s application as well as arguments that each side can make in support of their position.

Also, if time allows, include just a sentence or two regarding the policy implications of your conclusions. Law is meant to provide order in society and, when imposing laws, you should always predict the impact that they will have.

Take a deep breath and try not to panic

If you find yourself panicking, not understanding the issues presented or not remembering the rules related to such issues, don’t panic. Instead, close your eyes and take a few deep breaths. Then, start working systematically through the information with these tips and do your best on your law school finals.
