Describe a Hotel You Have Stayed In

Today, we are going to look at an IELTS speaking part 2 cue card that asks you to describe a hotel you have stayed in . This is a pretty interesting task and so we will look at some useful vocabulary and ideas to help you describe hotels effectively.

The Cue Card

First of all, let’s look at the cue card.

Describe a hotel you have stayed in. You should say: – where the hotel was – why you stayed at that particular hotel – give details of the hotel and the view from it and how you felt about the hotel.

Please note that this is just a single reported cue card and it is unlikely that you would encounter the same exact one again. Therefore, you must always read it carefully.

It is also reported that you might be asked to “Describe a hotel that you know” or “Describe a hotel that you would like to stay in.” These would require somewhat different answers.

Analysing the Cue Card

When you look at the cue card, you will have one minute to think about it. You should not dwell too long on analysis, but it is important to ensure that you understand the cue card.

In this case, there are only really two important facts:

  • It is a hotel that you describe (ie not a guesthouse, caravan, campsite, or Airbnb)
  • You have stayed there (ie not somewhere that you have heard about or want to stay in)

As for the bullet points, as we have discussed before these are not strictly necessary. There is nothing in the marking rubric to say that you must talk about them. However, the question does always say “you should” and so I strongly suggest you deal with the bullet points. Therefore, you should talk about:

  • where it was
  • why you stayed there
  • the important details of the hotel (a description)
  • and how you felt about it

You do not need to talk about these in any particular order and of course some may just require a brief mention of the key facts while others may warrant extended discussion.

Vocabulary for Describing Hotels

Several years ago, when I was teaching in China, I put together this PPT of useful vocabulary for describing hotels. It contains some example sentences for reference.

Now let’s put some of those words and phrases into a quiz to test your knowledge:

  • I never use the _____ in a hotel room because all the prices are marked up to a ridiculous extent.
  • If you get hungry, you can just call ____ and they’ll bring your meal up.
  • When I arrived, the _____ was quite rude and so I complained to her manager.
  • The hotel has a beautiful _____, which even attracts tourists who come in to take photos.
  • Don’t _____ late or else you might be charged for an extra day.
  • _____ staff will come around at about midday, so leave a “do not disturb” sign if you don’t want them coming into your room.
  • Many hotels have a ______ but I don’t like being too hot so I never use them.

Planning your Answer

For IELTS speaking part 2, you only have one minute to think about your answer and so you cannot take too long. It is usually best to just go with your first thought, even if it is not ideal. If your English skills are good enough, you will be able to fill the time and give a decent response. The examiner does not expect you to present a perfect answer because you should not have memorised anything in advance.

I would probably structure my answer like this:

  • Introduce the hotel by name and location
  • Say when and why I went there
  • Describe it in detail, highlighting key features
  • Give some of my opinions about it

However, I might also invert those two first options by stating the date and reason for my trip. This might improve narrative flow, depending on the situation.

In either case, these are natural and reasonable structures to follow. They are logical and will help me to speak without running out of ideas in less than one minute.

I would also make some notes, but I would be careful not to write too much or else this approach could backfire. Writing full sentences will leave you with no real plan because your preparation time would expire before you’d even finished a single sentence.

Instead, aim to write a few important words to remind you of vocabulary, ideas, or structure. Fundamentally, this would serve to give you confidence and a gentle reminder of important things to mention.

Sample Band 9 Answer

Pegaebong Hotel in North Korea

In 2015, I travelled to North Korea to run a marathon, and whilst in the country I visited the remote northern regions, close to the border with China. Here, I stayed at a place called Pegaebong Hotel, not far from the foot of Mount Paekdu.

The hotel was fascinating to me for various reasons. Firstly, it is a big, old hotel in a traditional style that you don’t normally see nowadays. It had grand staircases and winding hallways, with a large dining room. However, what was most interesting was the fact that it had no running water or electricity most of the time. North Korea is a very poor country and so there are many problems there. In this hotel, my room had a bathtub full of ice-cold water if I wanted to wash, but it was freezing cold outside, so this was not an appealing option. The lights seldom worked but sometimes the electricity would come on and shock you if you touched a metallic surface. The food was awful and we were given a single potato for dinner.

All in all, the hotel would probably have been unbearable for most people but I really liked it. The surrounding regions were beautiful and the hotel’s bizarre design and features made me really enjoy it in spite of its total lack of comfort, and whilst I was there I even met one of my heroes – a famous movie director. I will not forget my stay at the Pegaebong Hotel.

Notes on my Answer

As always, I have tried to give an interesting and natural answer to this cue card. I have avoided clichéd language like “Today I will talk about…” Instead, I focused on creating a narrative, as I mentioned with my summary of the structure above. My beginning and ending were pretty natural. I have highlighted key features to provide concrete details and I think that this answer would be interesting for the examiner, which is quite important. Although you are not doing IELTS to entertain someone, it can help you build a rapport and engage the listener enough to make them view your performance favourably.

Key vocabulary from my answer:

  • not far from the foot of ____
  • in a traditional style
  • grand staircases
  • winding hallways
  • no running water
  • not an appealing option
  • would have been unbearable
  • bizarre design

As always, do not try to dazzle the examiner with weird words and complex vocabulary. Just speak naturally and offer a realistic and straightforward description. If you do this, you will get a good score.

Are you applying for a job at a resort or hotel? One question that often arises during the interview process is, “Describe your stay at a resort.” While this may initially seem like a straightforward inquiry, providing a well-articulated and engaging answer requires careful consideration and thoughtful preparation.

Describe A Hotel You Have Stayed In.

You should say:

  • where it was
  • why and when you stayed there
  • what facilities it had
  • and say whether you liked or disliked staying in this hotel.

Sample Answer 1

Travelling is one of my hobbies that refreshes me after a long duration of tiring work. Additionally, since childhood, I have been encouraged to go on trekking trips organized by my school. Recently, I got an opportunity to combine both of these aspects when I visited Matheran, the smallest hill station in India in the western part of Maharashtra and stayed at the Lords Central Hotel. 

When I got an extended weekend during Good Friday, I welcomed this opportunity to put on my travelling cap and trekking shoes and leave in search of an adventure. As I knew, due to its proximity to Mumbai, Matheran would attract a lot of tourists during this time, I booked my room online. The hotel had got ravishing reviews on multiple online portals and I found the place quite enticing. 

Although the whole area of Matheran is surrounded by amazing scenic beauty and natural resources, this family-friendly hotel is only 0.6 kms away from the market area and yet gives a calm ambience. It has a well-placed swimming pool, small library, bar, dining room and a giant chessboard. Children can enjoy different fun activities and adults can enjoy their time under the shade of the tall trees. It is personally looked after by the members of the Lords family. Guests are provided three times freshly cooked delicious food from the in-house restaurant. The hotel maintains 23 spacious rooms with balconies divided into four types, namely, Standard Family Room, Valley View Room, Standard Double Room, and Valley Economic Double Room. Each room has basic amenities such as bottled drinking water, toiletries and an attached bathroom with hot and cold water supply. It also provides services such as room service, laundry and medical assistance. 

I loved the hotel’s environment and the amicable behaviour of the staff. I got a heavenly view of the sun rising over the hills from my balcony. Moreover, the hotel is also close to some of Matheran’s most popular landmarks, such as Porcupine Point or Sunset Point, Louisa Point, Alexander Point, Irshalgad Fort and One Tree Hill Point and gave me a good scope for exercise. Built more than 100 years ago, Lords Central Hotel is a mix of old-world charm, modern amenities and hospitable service and it urged me to visit again.

Well, I am glad to admit that both my family and friends are travel buffs. Whenever we travel to another city or country, we obviously have to stay in a hotel or any other type of accommodation. Generally, we go with budget hotels. However, there are always exceptions that we make. I would like to share my experience of staying in a luxury hotel here – Hotel Inn.

It was a four stars property that we had booked on our family trip to Manali in 2017. One of the reasons to book this hotel was that we wanted to experience the accommodation in a luxurious hotel. The booking was confirmed online, and the hotel was available at a reasonable price as well. We had booked a suite. It was huge enough for all four of us. In addition, Holiday Inn offered a river view, which was breathtaking and mesmerizing.

The hotel was humongous in size and had hundreds of rooms decorated with impressive interiors. Apart from comfortable rooms, the hotel had a plethora of other facilities to make the stay convenient, such as a swimming pool, a gaming room, and more.

One of the best things about this hotel was its delicious food. There were multi cuisines. It seemed like a golden pot of international food items. We had our stomachs full, but the taste buds still craved for more. All in all, I liked the hotel, and my experience was memorable. So now, whenever somebody asks for a good hotel in Manali, I always recommend this one.

I happened to visit Mandarmani last December and stayed there in a hotel called Liv Sea Valley Resort. It was a sea-facing resort and I dwelled there with my family for a week.

Due to the lockdown during the pandemic, travelling became really difficult and it was nearly impossible for us to get out anywhere. When the dangerous situation passed and the lockdown was lifted, we decided to go on a tour. It was a 4 days and 3 nights package.

The resort had small cottages with one double bed, air conditioner, television and a sofa with an attached sofa table. The connected washroom was clean with shower and bathtubs. As our family is large, we had to book 8 cottages. There was a lawn connecting all the cottages and it led us to the sea, which was connected to the resort. Due to this feature, the place had some awesome photographic views that we thoroughly enjoyed. Moreover, we got all these features at a reasonable price.

We loved the hotel very much. As it was connected to the beach, we could go and take a bath in the sea in the afternoon when it was low tide and clean ourselves in the hotel. Then, when it was high tide, we would sit in a concentric circle near the garden and enjoy the beautiful cold weather. Everything was so dreamy and beautiful. The slight sound of the waves hitting the rocks and the water splattering was a stunning experience.

Is it cheating if I tell you about a Bed and Breakfast I stayed in rather than a hotel? I’m going to risk it, and tell you all about a place I stayed on holiday, what it was like and why it was so special to me.

Many years ago I lost my job. I’d been covering a post while someone was on maternity leave, but then they came back and I found I didn’t have a job. Anymore! To cheer me up, two good friends of mine suggested we went away for a weekend break. One of them had found a really nice Bed and Breakfast in Anglesey, which is an Island off the coast of Wales. Nowadays it doesn’t feel so much like an island anymore because it is permanently attached to the mainland by the very famous ‘Menai Bridge’. She chose the place partly because of its spectacular location – it is surrounded by sea – but also because it was vegetarian (we all were too) and offered horse riding, which was a hobby we had in common.

The B&B as we call them in the UK, was, well, pretty eccentric. It was a lovely old house, with quirky rooms, dubious cleanliness and an assortment of dogs, cats, hens, ducks, ponies, people – pretty chaotic. From the house, you could see across the Menai Straits, the stretch of sea between Anglesey and the mainland, to the snow-topped mountains of Snowdonia. It was glorious. The proprietor was one of those people who very much spoke her mind, but took you as you were, she quickly involved us in life on her small holding, feeding animals, heading off to the beach and drunkenly putting the world to rights in front of an open fire in the evening. We walked the dogs, fed the hens and galloped the horses along deserted beaches.

When the woman who owned the B&B found I didn’t have a job, she said quite simply ‘well, why don’t you come and work for me?’ I was flabbergasted, I’d never really considered that sort of a job, and I’d come on holiday not looking for employment. I hesitated, but she persisted. ‘If you like it you can stay, if you don’t you can leave – where is the risk in that?’ To cut a long story short, with unusual spontaneity and recklessness I agreed. For the next two years, I worked at the B&B looking after the horses and guests, taking out rides along the beautiful Welsh beaches and enjoying a rural lifestyle. It was brilliant, I learned a lot about animals, people and myself, and had many adventures along the way. I didn’t earn much, but I lived well in a caravan in the middle of a field with hens clucking around outside and ponies scratching their bottoms on the door of my accommodation in the mornings!

So for me, that remote Anglesey B&B will always be very special, because it introduced me to a different way of living and working, and gave me an appreciation of the countryside that I hadn’t really been able to experience before. I don’t think I’ve ever laughed as much doing a job as I did staying there!

The hotel that I stayed in 2 years back while my visit to India is Westin. I had an official tour to Pune, India and my office arranged the stay in Westin. The reason I stayed in this particular hotel is mostly because my office arranged our stay there. But that was a really great experience. The hotel has been placed in a distinctive location in the beautiful Koregaon Park along the Mula Mutha River and is just five kilometres from the airport. Westin is also in the vicinity is Magarpatta and Hadapsar, an information technology hotspot. Industrial parks lie within a 25-kilometer radius of this hotel. The staying rooms are subtly designed and give comfort to be there. The hotel includes club rooms, attractive and heavenly spa and workout gym, meeting room and exclusive restaurant. The rooms feature soft and comfortable bed and an eye-catching view overlooking green surroundings Mula Mutha River.

How to answer this cue card ?

You need to describe a hotel where you have stayed. If you pick a famous hotel, your description should be close to the original facts regarding this hotel. But you are free to pick a hotel and give a superficial description as well. Mention the name of the hotel first and then tell your reason for staying there. People usually stay at hotels when they visit a place where they have no relatives. Sometimes they go to a foreign country or a distant city of the same country and stay at a hotel. The stay usually lasts for few days and then people take their departure after the intended task is done. You can mention a trip you took and stayed in a hotel or maybe you can state that your office arranged a business trip and picked the hotel for you.

Describe the following information to answer this cue card correctly:

  • Name and location of the hotel. If this is 4 stars / 5 stars hotel, mention that as well.
  • Specify the reason you stayed there.
  • How long you stayed there.
  • What type of room you stayed in and the facilities you got from the hotel.
  • Mention if this was the first time you stayed there or went there before.
  • Say if you have stayed there on your own choice or because the trip planner, office authority arranged that.
  • Give some interior and exterior description as well as the surrounding of the hotel.
  • There must be some distinctive points and things about the hotel; mention those. For instance: the food was delicious, the cost was very reasonable, they offered some free services, the location was excellent, the staffs were very cordial etc.

If you can talk about this cue card , you should be able to answer the following cue cards as well:

  • Describe a building that attracted you.
  • Describe a tour you have taken.

Model Answer:

In my humble opinion, staying at a nice hotel is actually one of the few most important things that make a tour memorable and enjoyable. Today, I would like to talk about one such hotel in Bangkok that I visited a couple of years ago. Thank you for choosing this great topic for me.

The name of this hotel is Siam Kempinski which, I think, is probably the most family-friendly hotel that I have ever visited. Sitting right in the heart of Bangkok downtown in Thailand, this giant looking hotel with its 400 luxury rooms is considered to be an “oasis” for those families who want to ensure a very exquisite travel experience for their family members. It doesn’t only look massive, but also goes to a great length to display contemporary that is pleasingly augmented with Thai touches. Most of the rooms at this luxury hotel are rather spacious that are furnished in beige and dark tones in order to give them a rather elegant and yet contrasting look.

However, apart from all things, I think that the hotel’s one of the most distinct features lies in its “original artwork”, about 4000 pieces of them, which beautifully graces most of the walls of its rooms.

And as far as the facilities and services are concerned, I would say that they are certainly of top class, where most rooms have large balconies and minibars. Not to mention, of course, its spotless marble bathrooms and elegant looking suites are certain to offer the guests a sense of novelty and purity that are hard to find in other hotels. Last, but not least, the hotel also offers breakfast, lunch and dinner buffet facilities, along with Wi-Fi, laundry, pool and fitness services.

So, considering all these things, I would certainly say that this is a very nice hotel to stay in, mainly because it offers a very great service for the prices it charges. Besides, what makes this hotel so unique is that even though this hotel attracts a rather large group of guests, the staff there has some uncanny abilities to remember its guests.

Rules of Civility author Amor Towles’ engaging new novel, A Gentleman in Moscow (Viking), tells the story of a Russian aristocrat who is kept under house arrest—for years—in the city’s Hotel Metropol. Here the author (who wrote an essay on his childhood obsession with grand hotels for Condé Nast Traveler’s September issue) reveals how he researched his book, and his favorite hotel for finding writing inspiration.

You've written about the Hotel Metropol 's fascinating backstory: It was a Belle Époque grand hotel in the style of the Ritz in Paris or Claridge's in London, which was seized by the Bolsheviks after the Russian Revolution and used to house part of the new fledgling government. Recognizing that Western travelers would judge Communism harshly if they had no decent place to stay, the Soviets restored the Metropol's extravagance (silver service in the dining room, uniformed bellhops) against the backdrop of severe hardship for its citizenry. Did you actually stay at the hotel to research the book? If so, what were your most interesting or surprising discoveries?

When I visited Moscow for the first time in 1998, I wandered into the historic Metropol Hotel as a curious tourist simply to ogle the giant painted glass ceiling that hangs over the grand restaurant off the lobby. It was the memory of that short visit that prompted me, some years later, to set A Gentleman in Moscow in the hotel. When I was about two-thirds of the way through the first draft of the novel, I returned to Moscow and spent a week at the Metropol in Suite 217—the very room in which the first Soviet constitution was drafted in the aftermath of the Revolution. While on that stay, the gracious staff gave me a comprehensive tour of the hotel. One of the most eye-opening aspects of that tour was the kitchen—a warren of interconnected rooms covering the expanse of a city block. As the hotel’s manager explained, this was a vestige of the austere early days of Communism, when the hotel had to make virtually anything they wanted to serve. Thus there were butcheries, fish cleaning facilities, vegetable pantries, bakeries, and rows of refrigerated rooms abutting the actual kitchens.

Before you became a novelist, you worked in finance and traveled a lot. Did you have any favorite destinations and/or hotels? Which and why?

When I traveled professionally in Europe, I would inevitably spend a weekend at the Hôtel Costes around the corner from the Place Vendôme in Paris. Though established in the early 1990s, the Costes’s interior is a fin de siècle fantasy with plush velvet couches tucked in nooks, 19th-century paintings hanging on the walls, and candles burning everywhere. The hotel’s restaurant is in an interior courtyard (with awnings that get extended in case of rain) in which distractingly attractive waiters and waitresses serve fashionable clientele from noon until the early hours of the morning—all to the tune of the hotel’s branded style of international lounge music. One of the main reasons I inevitably stayed at Costes is that I found it a perfect place to write. My room in the attic overlooking the Rue St-Honoré had an antique French desk adorned with fresh roses that faced a pair of 19th-century landscapes. I would work at that desk well into the night, and whenever I flagged, I would go downstairs to be recharged by the relentless glamour of the lobby.

What’s your favorite airport and why?

Strangely enough, my favorite airport is Logan Airport in Boston—but largely for sentimental reasons. My first real summer job was working as a journeyman for the airport’s resident maintenance crew—a small army of union electricians, plumbers, and carpenters. In any given week, I would be assigned to assist a different member of the team in a new task somewhere on the airport’s sprawling grounds. On my very first day, I was assigned to help someone tar the roof of the main terminal. During the lunch break as my overseer napped, I wandered over to the roof’s edge to watch the cars unload the arriving travelers. I took special interest when several police cars raced up to the terminal followed by a pair of fire engines. Next thing I knew, Boston’s Finest were carefully crossing the roof towards me, having assumed that I intended to jump. Needless to say, I found myself in the chief administrator’s office at the end of the day. But the hardscrabble crew that I worked with found the incident hilarious, and they took great pleasure in calling me the Leaper for the two summers I worked there.

What one place in the world tops your bucket list and why?

I would be hard pressed to choose one place… But one thing I inevitably enjoy visiting anywhere in the world is a panorama. Wildly popular at the beginning of the 19th century, panoramas are circular paintings with diameters often exceeding 300 feet that depict a 360-degree view from a particular spot on earth at a particular moment in time; they never cease to amaze me. I have spent hours at Franz Roubaud’s panorama of the Battle of Borodino (1911), housed in a special building on Poklonnaya Hill in Moscow. This particular panorama has the added bonus of being adorned with realistic sculptural objects—such as fences, shacks, rifles, and soldiers—to enhance the illusion that you are in the middle of the battle as Napoleon approaches. Similarly, I routinely visit John Vanderlyn’s Panoramic View of the Palace and Gardens of Versailles (1818-1819) at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. In fact, I had seen Versailles at least five times while standing in the Met before I finally visited the real thing with my wife and children a few years ago.

What dish, served at which restaurant, would you travel for?

One restaurant I visit without fail, whenever I’m in the Bay Area, is the Boulevard at 1 Mission Street, a few strides from the waterfront. It has excellent food and wine very much in the modern California style, but I go there less for any one dish than for the pleasure of dining with the restaurant’s chefs. For the Boulevard’s kitchen is a narrow open galley in the middle of the restaurant bordered by an Art Nouveau dining counter. As such, you can choose a stool at your preferred station (sitting two feet from the gentleman searing the lamb chops on an open fire, for instance, or the young woman finishing the salmon with fennel flowers and Chanterelles). I’ve never been disappointed by a meal at the Boulevard; I’ve loved watching that special efficiency of expert chefs on a busy night; and, most importantly, I’ve learned many fine cooking techniques from this open kitchen’s amiable experts.

How to describe rooms to help the guest decide?

Our research into hotel guests’ online behaviour shows that alarmingly often they have problems deciding which room to choose. How should you describe rooms to help guests make the decision and to make them choose rooms of a higher standard more often?

A very specific pattern often emerges from our studies of hotel guests’ online behaviour. Namingly, guests visit the pages with details of particular types of rooms and revisit several times those they have already seen. In the end, they choose the cheapest type of room (if any).

Websites that manage to easily assist guests in their decision making share a few characteristic features. What are they?

First of them is clearly highlighting the most crucial features of a room, especially room size and the maximum number of guests. Bed configuration, extra bed options, air conditioning are also important. Each hotel has a slightly different list that can also include details such as the window view or the presence of a balcony.

It is crucial to clearly indicate such features as early as on the first list view of all rooms. This is where we, as Profitroom, can help hoteliers by properly designing their room list.

The list should show only the key features in a concise form, without any unnecessary text. Guests shouldn't have to read such a description – it’s enough to scan it to know the rooms’ key features and to compare them.

At a glance, you know the differences between the rooms – and see what are the great additional features which the more expensive room offers.

However, if hoteliers don't put the rooms’ key features into the system, they won't show up on the list! On the other hand, if your website allows you to publish longer text strings on the room list, it is definitely not worth making use of it in favour of the key words. Making an effort and putting all the key features into the system will allow you to use them over and over again. Your guests will pay you back with more reservations. 

When viewing the room list, guests just want to compare rooms and longer texts will only obscure the picture.

If you cannot dispense with a loose text (because, for example, the rooms have a unique character that has to be shown somehow), the description should not exceed the length limit of one text message: 160 characters. It should more or less look like this:

The key features are not all, of course. The rooms should also be described in a detailed form available on the per room view. This is what you can really do your word-magic. Unfortunately, around 70% of them do not take the opportunity and provide only sketchy descriptions.

How describe rooms?

It is worth repeating the key features of the room, just like on the room list. They should be conveniently displayed at the top of the page clearly visible to guests, so they don't have to spend time searching for the most important features among the remaining features. 

What should you start writing room descriptions from?

It is good to start with brainstorming and writing down all information that you think might be of importance and interest to guests. Talk to the reception staff – they know what guests ask about and what arguments influence positive decisions.

Don’t start writing just yet! Let’s first classify room features into three groups - from the most to the least important ones.

The first group should include the features that are good description of your hotel’s unique characteristics and atmosphere. What we mean by it are the distinguishing features that you want to highlight, that make you stand out from other hotels. For example, in the case of a historic building it might be a short (more on what we mean by “short” will follow soon) reference to its history.

The second group is all the important information on room furnishings, amenities and arrangement, and terms of stay (complementary services, range of service, pet friendliness, child policy and cancellation policy) – those are the details that guests ask about.

All other information that does not fit into the two above groups will constitute the third category. It includes descriptions of what guests can see in the photos (“furnished in two styles – classical and modern, in brown and golden tones with green, beige and orange accents”) as well as high level statements (“We aim high when it comes to the standard of our rooms.”).

The information from the first group should be placed just after the key features of the room. You can consider illustrating it with a photo. Then comes the information from the second group. The third group should be omitted altogether – a long description will discourage guests from reading the text.

How to put it all together?

This is of crucial importance. Our research also demonstrates that hotel guests do not read blocks of text . Instead, what works well are short bulleted list , with the most important fragments in bold type, such as this:

Make sure your descriptions are short and to the point. Once a text is ready, make it shorter by a third. Then ask someone to edit and shorten it by another third. Consider every word – does it carry any useful information? Remember that hotel guests don't want to read long and meaningless descriptions.

What about pictures?

Pictures should show what is difficult to describe with words (style, colours, spaces, atmosphere) and vice versa – the lexical description should include all information that pictures cannot convey. Graphics and texts are meant to communicate different types of information and it is worth remembering this distinction.

Companies Want Suit Over Conversion of Hotel to Shelter Dismissed

C ompanies allegedly associated with a fugitive Chinese billionaire, including one firm found guilty of wire fraud and other federal charges, argue in new court papers for dismissal of a lawsuit brought by two lessees at the L.A. Grand Hotel Downtown whose owners are critical of its conversion into a homeless shelter.

The Los Angeles Superior Court lawsuit was filed by the nonprofit Academy of Media Arts and the still unopened ROME Nightclub against Wei Huang, Shen Zhen New World I LLC and other defendants allegedly connected to Huang. The complaint alleges fraud, breach of contract and the covenant of good faith and fair dealing, negligence and interference with contractual relations and prospective economic advantage.

Huang has not yet been served.

On Thursday, attorneys for the firms filed court papers with Judge Thomas Long seeking dismissal of the case. They also filed separate pleadings seeking to compel arbitration regarding the ROME claims and to strike some of the contents of the suit that they maintain are either prejudicial or false. An initial hearing is scheduled for Aug. 13.

“Plaintiffs fail to assert a single fact to support their baseless and inflammatory allegations,” the defense attorneys state in their court papers.

Despite the ROME lease having a binding arbitration clause and although the academy lease was entered into long after the project started, both have sued alleging that the hotel’s participation in the city of Los Angeles’ Project Roomkey program violated their respective leases, the defense attorneys further state.

The defense attorneys add in their pleadings that there is so much uncertainty in the complaint that each defendant does not know what it is being accused of.

But according to the suit filed Jan. 25, Huang’s “unilateral and voluntary decision to profit from the homeless shelter for an indefinite period of time has fundamentally altered the first-class character, appearance and reputation of the premises.”

Shen Zhen New World I was sentenced in May 2023 to five years probation and fined $4 million for Huang’s actions and those of others who provided more than $1 million in benefits, including luxury trips and a sham loan, to bribe then-Los Angeles City Councilman Jose Huizar to obtain city approval to build a 77-story skyscraper.

U.S. District Court Judge John Walter said the case exposed the “crushing costs of public corruption.”

At the conclusion of an 11-day trial that ended in November 2022, a jury found Shen Zhen guilty of three counts of honest service wire fraud, four counts of interstate and foreign travel in aid of bribery, and one count of bribery.

In 2010, Huang bought the L.A. Grand Hotel on Figueroa Street in what was part of Huizar’s district at the time.

“For more than five years, Huang bribed Councilman Huizar with cash, casino gambling chips, flights on private jets and commercial airlines, stays at luxury Las Vegas hotels and casinos, expensive meals, spa services, prostitution services, sham loans and $600,000 in collateral for Mr. Huizar to confidentially settle a sexual harassment lawsuit,” according to the suit, which further states that Huang remains a fugitive in China.

Huizar was sentenced in January to 13 years in federal prison for using his City Hall position to shake down real estate developers for at least $1.5 million in cash and benefits in exchange for help getting downtown real estate projects approved.

ROME Nightclub has invested hundreds of thousands of dollars in plans, permits and a liquor license for its September opening of the establishment on the hotel’s rooftop, a project that has increased the hotel’s value by more than $15 million, the suit states.

But when Huang was unable to fill the vacancies at the hotel, he transformed all rooms into a homeless shelter and was paid $1.5 million a month while claiming that it was an emergency, short-term public health program, the suit states.

Academy students and nightclub financiers have been subjected to trash, assaults, hypodermic needles, violence and safety threats, according to the suit, which further states that some families have removed their children.

In Showtime’s A Gentleman in Moscow, Ewan McGregor plays Count Alexander Ilyich Rostov, a charming aristocrat who is sentenced to life for the crime of being born into nobility. He is stripped of his titles, and summarily shipped off to spend the rest of his days at the grand Hotel Metropol in the middle of Moscow. The year is 1921; the Bolsheviks have just staged a successful revolution against the Tsarist regime, making people like Alexander enemies of the state. While other noblemen are lined up against a wall and shot, Alexander is allowed to live because of a cruel twist of fate: he once wrote a poem that was appropriated by the Communists. It’s like Bhagat Singh inadvertently inspiring the RSS with “Khayalon Ki Bijli.”

And so, as a 20-something who hasn’t worked a day in his life — “It is not the business of a gentleman to have an occupation,” he scoffs at the tribunal during his sentencing hearing — Alexander is stuffed into cramped servant’s quarters in the attic of the hotel, with the assurance that meals would be provided to him by the state on the condition that he doesn’t leave the Metropol’s premises. It’s a tough deal, but even though he never explicitly mentions it, it seems obvious that Alexander is grateful for not having been sent to a gulag instead. Based on the acclaimed 2016 novel by Amor Towles, A Gentleman in Moscow is about as perfect as prestige TV dramas can get — a bittersweet, life-affirming tale of triumph in the face of insurmountable odds.

Alexander’s aristocratic background and general air of superiority don’t exactly make him an instantly appealing character, especially when he’s surrounded by members of the working class who’ve suddenly been elevated in the eyes of Mother Russia. But that’s where McGregor’s performance comes in. Broader complications of playing someone across several decades aside, McGregor instills in Alexander an unwavering dignity, a twinkling sincerity, and endless empathy for others. We do not learn about his aspirations, nor do we hear about the life that he had imagined for himself. That would be too cruel, and Alexander has already experienced unreasonable cruelty. A Gentleman in Moscow doesn’t let him wallow, although it allows him a bout of sadness when he needs it. Almost in an act of solidarity, the show incarcerates itself along with Alexander, barely leaving his side as he surrenders to the reality of his new life as a prisoner in the country he loves so dearly. In his entrapment, he finds emancipation.

To penetrate the protagonist’s mind with such clarity would be difficult for any show to accomplish, but it is especially admirable here, because Towles’ towering novel would make frequent detours into the inner landscape of its protagonist’s psyche. Creator Ben Vanstone and his team strike a fine balance between the cruel irony of Alexander’s predicament, and his ability to make the most of his surroundings — he lives in relative luxury, while the world outside witnesses upheaval. “It is the business of times to change, and of gentlemen to change with them,” he says in one scene, having embraced life’s eternal truth, that go on it must, come rain or new regime.

A natural charmer — Alexander is well-versed in virtually all matters under the sun, including gastronomy, literature, and, somewhat significantly, apples — he makes friends everywhere he goes. And before long, he begins to view the hotel’s staff — the receptionist Vasily, the head waiter Andre, the barman Audrius, the seamstress Marina, and the chef Emile — as his family. Over time, they become equals, a transformation that the show symbolically communicates in a scene where thousands of wine bottles in the hotel’s cellar have their labels removed by the newly empowered proletariat. In the eyes of an aesthete like Alexander, it is an act of vandalism akin to Tchaikovsky being performed on a Casio keyboard.

But it is only when he befriends an unsupervised little girl named Nina — a long term resident of the hotel like himself — that Alexander truly evolves as a person. And in episode three — every episode functions as a self-contained story in itself — Alexander enters into a romance with a silent film star named Anna Urbanova, played by Mary Elizabeth Winstead . What begins as a brief fling turns into an epic love story, as Anna and Alexander’ re-encounter each other across several years. We never follow Ana outside the Metropol’s four walls, but like every supporting character in the show — a glowering ‘villain’ named Osip gets perhaps the most resounding arc — she emerges as a fully fleshed-out person by the time Alexander is ready to make more active choices, following a lifetime of passively adjusting to whatever googly was hurled at him.

A Gentleman in Moscow is unflinching in its affection for its hero, rarely making the mistake to suggest that he is in any way at peace. Alexander might have adapted to his surroundings, but crucially, he hasn’t become acclimatised to them. Artfully filmed flashbacks project him as a more complicated man than we’d been led to believe, and McGregor grabs every opportunity that he gets to milk his melancholia. The world, as Alexander learns quite literally, waits for no man. On the outside, Hitler’s forces make inroads across Europe ; some years later, they are defeated. A few decades into his imprisonment, Stalin dies. But Alexander’s existence revolves not around the whims of the universe or the petty politics of man, but around his found family, which, in episode four, grows in more magnificent ways than he could ever have imagined.

This is, ultimately, a story about repression — a repression of emotions, of culture, of expression. Alexander experiences tremendous injustices, but he channels whatever resentment that he might hold in his heart by opening it up to others. This might sound like high praise, but watching A Gentleman in Moscow isn’t unlike watching The Shawshank Redemption for the first time. It’s the kind of show that can, with a well-placed wail of a cello, or a perfectly timed close-up, sweep you off your feet with its unique blend of old world charm, soaring romance, and immersive thrills.

Despite years of criticism, President Vladimir V. Putin has only now changed his defense minister and allowed high-level corruption arrests.

Periodic outcries over incompetence and corruption at the top of the Russian military have dogged President Vladimir V. Putin’s war effort since the start of his invasion of Ukraine in early 2022.

When his forces faltered around the Ukrainian capital, Kyiv, the need for change was laid bare. When they were routed months later outside the city of Kharkiv, expectations of a shake-up grew. And after the mercenary leader Yevgeny V. Prigozhin marched his men toward Moscow, complaining of deep rot and ineptitude at the top of the Russian force, Mr. Putin seemed obliged to respond.

But, at each turn, the Russian president avoided any major public moves that could have been seen as validating the criticism, keeping his defense minister and top general in place through the firestorm while shuffling battlefield commanders and making other moves lower on the chain.

Now, with the battlefield crises seemingly behind him and Mr. Prigozhin dead, the Russian leader has decided to act, changing defense ministers for the first time in more than a decade and allowing a number of corruption arrests among top ministry officials.

The moves have ushered in the biggest overhaul at the Russian Defense Ministry since the invasion began and have confirmed Mr. Putin’s preference for avoiding big, responsive changes in the heat of a crisis and instead acting at a less conspicuous time of his own choosing.

“We have to understand that Putin is a person who is stubborn and not very flexible,” said Abbas Gallyamov, a former Putin speechwriter who now lives outside Russia. “He believes that reacting too quickly and rapidly to a changing situation is a sign of weakness.”

The timing of Mr. Putin’s recent moves is most likely a sign that he has greater confidence about his battlefield prospects in Ukraine and his hold on political power as he begins his fifth term as president, experts say.

Russian forces are making gains in Ukraine , taking territory around Kharkiv and in the Donbas region, as Ukraine struggles with aid delays from the United States and strained reserves of ammunition and personnel . Top officials in the Kremlin are feeling optimistic.

“They likely judge the situation within the force as stable enough to punish some in the military leadership for its prior failures,” said Michael Kofman, an expert on the Russian military and a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Demand for change at the top of the Russian military has been pent up since the invasion’s earliest days, when stories circulated about Russian soldiers going to war without proper food and equipment and losing their lives while answering to feckless military leaders.

The anger crested with an aborted uprising led last year by Mr. Prigozhin , who died in a subsequent plane crash that U.S. officials have said was most likely a state-sanctioned assassination .

Mr. Prigozhin , a caterer turned warlord who grew rich on state contracts, was an unlikely messenger. But he put high-level corruption on the minds of Russia’s rank and file and the public more broadly, releasing profanity-laced tirades against Sergei K. Shoigu, then the defense minister, and Russia’s top uniformed officer, Gen. Valery V. Gerasimov. At one point, Mr. Prigozhin filmed himself in front of a pile of dead Russian fighters and denounced top officials for “rolling in fat” in their wood-paneled offices.

His subsequent failed mutiny showed that the problems festering in the Defense Ministry under Mr. Shoigu for over a decade had boiled over and that the populace craved renewal, said a person close to the ministry who spoke on the condition of anonymity in order to discuss sensitive topics.

The Russian leader now appears to be moving against the very officials that Mr. Prigozhin had been attacking.

The first harbinger of change arose last month with the arrest of Timur Ivanov , a protégé of Mr. Shoigu and the deputy defense minister in charge of military construction projects whom the Russian authorities have accused of taking a large bribe. He has denied wrongdoing. Mr. Ivanov previously attracted the attention of Aleksei A. Navalny’s Anti-Corruption Foundation for his and his wife’s conspicuously lavish lifestyle, including yacht rentals on the French Riviera.

Then, this month, days after Mr. Putin began his new term as president, the Kremlin announced that he had replaced Mr. Shoigu and chosen Andrei R. Belousov, one of his longtime economic advisers, as the new defense minister. Mr. Shoigu was moved to run the Russian Security Council, where he would still have access to the president but would have little direct control over money.

Mr. Belousov has no military experience . But he boasts a relatively clean image and a long government career untainted by large corruption scandals.

“If you want to win a war, corruption at a larger scale impacting the results on the battlefield is, in theory at least, not something you want,” said Maria Engqvist, the deputy head of Russia and Eurasia studies at the Swedish Defense Research Agency.

Still, Ms. Engqvist called high-level corruption in Russia “a feature, not a bug.”

“Corruption is a tool to gain influence, but it can also be used against you at any given time, depending on whether you say the wrong thing at the wrong time or make the wrong decision at the wrong time,” she said. “So you can be ousted with a reasonable explanation that the public can accept.”

Ms. Engqvist said the changes also raised questions about how long General Gerasimov would stay in his position as chief of the general staff and top battlefield commander in Ukraine.

The arrests at the Defense Ministry have gathered pace this month, with four more top generals and defense officials detained on corruption charges. Dmitri S. Peskov, the Kremlin spokesman, denied on Thursday that the arrests represented a “campaign.”

The corruption charges against top Defense Ministry officials have come alongside promises of greater financial and social benefits for the rank-and-file soldiers, an apparent attempt to improve morale and mollify populist critics.

Mr. Belousov used his first remarks after his nomination as defense minister to describe his plans to cut bureaucracy and improve access to health care and other social services for veterans of the war. And on Thursday, the speaker of Russia’s lower house of Parliament, Vyacheslav V. Volodin, and Finance Minister Anton G. Siluanov expressed support for exempting fighters in Ukraine from proposed income-tax increases.

The high-level arrests are unlikely to root out vast corruption in the Russian military establishment, but they could make top officials think twice before stealing at a particularly large scale, at least for a period, said Dara Massicot, a senior fellow at the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

“It will introduce a chill into the system and make everyone pause as they try to figure out the new code of accepted behavior,” Ms. Massicot said.

Beyond sending an anticorruption message, at least one of the arrests seemed to be aimed at settling a political score.

Maj. Gen. Ivan Popov, a top Russian commander who led forces holding off Ukraine’s counteroffensive, chided the Russian military leadership in a widely seen recording last year after he was removed from his post. He was apprehended on Tuesday on fraud charges, according to the state news agency TASS. He denied wrongdoing, his lawyer said.

“The bottom line is that the war exposed a lot of different problems — corruption, incompetence and openness to public expressions of insubordination — that the leadership feels a need to address,” said Samuel Charap, a senior political scientist at the RAND Corporation. “Now is a good time to do this, precisely because there isn’t a short-term acute risk on the battlefield.”
