Modern Technology: Advantages and Disadvantages Report

Disadvantages and potential solutions.

Due to the development of modern technology, humanity is presented with new inventions capable of facilitating everyday life almost every year. Nowadays, people have a variety of technological solutions to use. Sophisticated gadgets, new opportunities for instant communication, and other things are meant to improve people’s experiences with daily tasks. Despite the benefits of new technology, it can affect people by causing cognitive problems or issues related to inappropriate content, and such concerns require common users’ active participation to be reduced.

The use of modern technology is increasing rapidly, and it can have both positive and negative consequences. According to Farmer and Lafond (2016), even though technological progress is “a driver of economic growth,” this process should be highly predictable and historically trackable to avoid economic collapses and other issues (p. 647). It means that sometimes, rapid technological growth and digitalization can present a problem since the rates of technological advancement can be incompatible with social conditions. First of all, modern technology can become dangerous when it is overused, or the resources needed for its implementation are more significant than its actual benefits. Apart from that, there are numerous concerns related to modern technology’s supposed impact on people’s health.

The Role of Technology

People use modern technology daily, but its effects and the perceived benefits may vary depending on its type. For instance, numerous food production technologies have been improved recently. All individuals who do not produce alimentary products on their own present a party that receives benefits in this regard. The same is true when it comes to new technology in construction, healthcare, and many other fields of activity. The field typically associated with the most obvious growth of impact on people’s daily lives is information and communications technology. According to Given et al. (2016), in 2010, more than 90% of teenagers from the United States had an opportunity to access the Internet. The increasing access to technologies for data sharing and communication impacts millions of people, encouraging them to become faster at data searching, which is particularly important for educational purposes. Therefore, in general, modern technology heavily impacts people’s lives, removing the necessity of tiring housework activities and facilitating communication.

The advantages of technological growth are numerous, and they strictly relate to specific fields. For example, in ITC, technological advancement leads to faster exchange of information, which has positive implications to awareness of disastrous events, people’s overall area of thought, and access to new knowledge. To some extent, new opportunities in ITC are capable of reducing finance-based barriers to information. As for other advantages, some examples of new technology can be life-saving (Farmer & Lafond; 2016; Hamet, & Tremblay, 2017). For instance, the emergence of new medical robots helps to eliminate mistakes related to the human factor and monitor “the guided delivery of drugs to target organs, tissues, and tumors” (Hamet, & Tremblay, 2017, p. S39). As is clear from this example, further technological advancement can potentially increase the quality of medical care by reducing the rates of complications. In general, new technology is advantageous since it facilitates education and can help to eliminate medical mistakes.

The disadvantages of modern technology involve numerous risks related to people’s cognitive intelligence and children’s healthy development. Nowadays, even pre-school children have access to gadgets and some online sources, which helps them to learn “by modeling the adult world” (Given et al., 2016, p. 350). This “world” may involve different types of content, and the age-appropriateness of children’s online activities presents a significant issue to discuss. Samaha and Hawi (2017) report that “American youth intense exposure to new media systems… negatively affects their sexuality” (p. 352). This fact adds to the problem of technology use related to exposure to unwanted materials. According to Moledina and Khoja (2018), “overindulgence on the internet and internet-enabled devices causes cognitive impairment such as reduced attention and decreased memory span” (p. 12). Nowadays, many children possess technology literacy, but as research indicates, memory issues at an early age are a reverse of the coin. Both disadvantages discussed in the section are related to problems widely discussed today, and the ability to address them is crucial.

The problem related to the exposure to age-inappropriate materials with the help of new technology can be solved due to the concerted efforts of parents and software developers. Apart from using applications helping to filter content, parents can reduce unwanted influences on their children by introducing specific rules at home (Samaha & Hawi, 2017). Among other things, time limits related to media use can make children more disciplined. The next issue, the threat of cognitive impairment, should be solved with the help of focused education and again, parental control. For instance, Moledina and Khoja (2018) recommend the so-called digital diet and increased social activity to both adults and children. These measures are supposed to help a person strike the right balance between online and real-life activities, thus helping to prevent addiction to technology.

Finally, although the growth of research and new technology has several advantages related to people’s quality of life and the amount of time needed to perform certain operations, its negative effects deserve close attention and specific solutions. Technology overuse and the availability of age-inappropriate content are among the most obvious negative effects of technological advancement. To solve such problems, people should become more conscious concerning modern technology and closely monitor their children’s use of it.

Pros and Cons of Technology in the Classroom

Student learning is an area with enormous potential to benefit from information technology. Information dissemination is, after all, a core strength of today’s technologies. And digital technology offers versatile platforms to streamline classroom teaching.

While technology unlocks innovation opportunities, blended teaching and learning are not without disadvantages. What are the downsides that come with the powers and benefits of technology?

Debate is still going on concerning potential harm from integrating technology into the classroom. Let’s look at both sides by discussing the advantages and disadvantages of students accessing computers and digital information.

Advantages of Technology in Education

By offering digital tools and learning platforms, technology offers great advantages in school education. Students have more information at their fingertips and build technology skills. Tech can do some tasks equally or better than teachers, including administration, data gathering and supporting self-direct learning. Here are the top five pros to technology in the classroom.

1. Access high-quality, current information

Science teacher using digital whiteboard

Modern technology is fantastic when it comes to making information available to everyone. In a classroom setting, getting the most up-to-date data helps ensure the best educational experience. Teachers are also able to use or direct students towards trusted sources to ensure accurate information.

Students are also able to assimilate information more efficiently with the interactive presentation that digital technology allows. Instead of reading through text sequentially, the teacher or student can navigate information on a topic using hyperlinks, tabs, accordions, etc. References can be checked immediately as well.

Classroom technology definitely beats paper textbooks for accessing relevant information quickly. The trick is to place structure around activities to maintain focus and ensure the class is covering the same material. The need to keep everyone on the same page so to speak is a limiting factor in the use of technology for gaining information.

2. Gather student performance metrics easily

Online learning in the classroom

A clear and powerful advantage of using technology in education is that it allows teachers to perform their job better. The automatic collection of data in digital testing and learning environments has the benefits of: allowing more student performance data to be collected, freeing teachers from repetitive grading exercises, and providing instant feedback to students.

Platforms that yield data analytics can pinpoint the areas where each student is having most difficulty. Performance information allows instructors to quickly adjust teaching strategies and the syllabus according to the data gathered and analyzed.

When a given learning goal can be achieved with technology or traditional methods with about equal effectiveness, the technology-based approach may be preferred just because of the data advantages. Once in this digital environment, the technology and instructional content may be improved over time, leaving traditional instruction techniques further and further behind.

3. Students learn technology skills

Students using a laptop and tablet in elementary school

Using technology in the classroom naturally increases opportunities for students to learn technology skills. While it’s possible to take all but the simplest IT skills out of a lesson, keeping some technical challenges in there is healthy for student development. After all, we live in a digital world and have things like virtual offices and working online from home .

Children are fast learners when it comes to most things but especially with technology. Given the chance, they’ll quickly build computer operation skills and digital literacy. Examples of skills they’ll learn include keyboard awareness, logging in and password protection, navigating apps, setting preferences, online document sharing, and using standard software such as text editors and spreadsheet workbooks.

Teachers can offer exercises that give pupils the opportunity to test and expand their capabilities. For example, you can give students freedom in how they present project results. The smart ones, who could perhaps become IT professionals in the future, will find and deploy internet resources, such as graphics or charting software, to enhance the presentation.

4. Improved student participation and engagement

Students generally love technology and introducing it is a way to boost engagement. Mixing up traditional instruction styles with technology makes the class less predictable and the learning environment more dynamic.

Examples of how teachers can inject technology are to: direct students to online resources, present short videos, use interactive software, make digital presentations, and ask students to create digital content themselves.

Online platforms are often flexible in allowing you to exercise your creativity. You can, for instance, customize quizzes to make them more engaging and competitive. Any good resources you find online might be useful additions to the lesson. The possibilities are limitless.

You can also apply technology to get more information from reserved students. If you need to ask the opinion of everyone regarding a topic or even a simple question, why not use an online polling platform? This way, even quiet students who normally wouldn’t want to speak in the classroom will participate.

5. Automate repetitive tasks

Teacher grading papers

Teaching can include tedious tasks such as keeping track of attendance, recording quiz scores and noting tasks completed. With the present technology available, such tasks can now be partially or fully automated. This can unlock time teachers are able to divert to substantive teaching endeavors.

Existing technology can be used to help teachers in several areas: planning lessons, assessing students, grading homework, giving feedback and administrative paperwork. Jill Barshay

Implementing technology is not a costless exercise however and the effectiveness depends on how well software is programmed and made easy to use. But, over time, we can expect the work of teachers to become more streamlined. Instructors will have fewer administrative tasks and more time to capitalize on human strengths, such as making connections, inspiring students and creating a sense of shared purpose.

Disadvantages to Technology in the Classroom

The recency of many innovations means we’re still grappling with how best to incorporate technology in schools. Educators may lack the time and knowledge to implement tech effectively. Using technology without sufficient care can produce poorer learning outcomes and cause students to miss out on social interaction. These are key cons of technology in the classroom and online education.

1. Faster but less memorable learning

Typing and fast speed of modern tech.

While the lightning pace with which technology operates may seem like a clear benefit, experienced educators are actually wary of this aspect. Devices and learning apps are able to function faster than the corresponding learning speed of the human mind. Students may gloss over material, missing texture and depth along the way.

Proper and coherent cognitive thought takes time. Otherwise, engagement can be drastically reduced. It’s for this reason experts are suggesting we modify media use, such as how videos are presented , to slow down and allow for more rumination and contemplation.

The simple act of writing something by hand has slowing, stimulatory effects that brain research has shown to aid both learning and memorization. Although efficient, typing is repetitive as each keystroke is almost the same action. Writing by hand is more challenging, intricate and slower, allowing your brain to form more “hooks” to imprint thoughts.

2. Technology can be distracting

High school student distracted by laptop

Devices such as laptops and tablets in the classroom are bound to become sources of distraction to students. This is especially true if the software doesn’t prevent access to apps unrelated to lessons, quizzes and other educational activities.

A need exists for appropriate restrictive measures on gadgets in education to ensure they further learning goals and aren’t used, for example, to play games or use social media for pure entertainment. You can be sure that some badly behaved students will always try to use technology for fun instead of the intended purpose.

A problem here is that high school students may be more tech savvy than their teachers. One technique students use to access out-of-bounds sites is to go to a proxy site that delivers content from other sites without the student technically visiting those sites. Another method to bypass a school firewall is to use a virtual private network (VPN ) to encrypt browsing data so the student’s internet activities can’t be monitored.

3. Less direct social interaction

Class in computer lab

The apparent way in which technology excises social interaction is another cause for concern. Students have less need to verbally communicate and interact with their teachers and one another when using technology. Online teaching and learning excludes face-to-face interaction altogether.

To address this, classroom teachers should ensure activities such as oral presentations, recitations and group work happen regularly. There needs to be a mindfulness that we’re trying to prepare well-rounded people for adulthood.

For students addicted to gaming or social media, school might actually be a place where they get some downtime from tech. It’s up to teachers to identify when students are spending too much time with their heads buried in devices. When technology isn’t being used, students should be encouraged or pressed to show some life and interact.

4. Integrating tech is often time consuming

Woman teacher teaching online

While technology could make the job of a teacher very easy in the future, we are not there yet . Devising effective lessons using digital technology rather than traditional methods can be challenging and time consuming. That’s why it’s important for educators to share their insights on how to effectively teach kids when there is technology in the classroom.

Showing up to your class and teaching by talking and interacting with students doesn’t require special preparation. But when you make extensive use of technology during the lesson, you’re normally going to have to prepare for that. Teachers taking advantage of technology have the same amount of face-to-face instruction time but may need to do more planning, placing an extra strain on their workload.

Online learning when classes are held remotely have shown the limitations of tech. Just trying to corral students, to ensure they’re all logged in and paying attention, is a challenge in itself. The quality of lessons suffers as educators grapple with tech while trying to meet the practical learning needs of students.

6 Tips on How To Engage With Students

This was helpfull

My child has been influenced due to the bad technology. He was a nice 9 year old kid before he found out about the thug shaker from technology. He keeps saying “Im bout to blow.” Technology has effected our society. And the thug shaker is a prime example.

gangsta rap

The amount of privilege in this paragraph is nothing short of nauseating. “Teachers can offer exercises that give pupils the opportunity to test and expand their capabilities. The smart ones, who could perhaps become IT professionals in the future, will find and deploy internet resources, such as graphics or charting software, to enhance the presentation.” Oh wow, just wow… “The smart ones”, you mean the ones that sit still, eyes on you, have stable households, technology access at home, maybe even only from this country… Do better future educators, do better….

Everyone in a classroom should be expected to pay attention, no matter their background. You don’t have to be privileged to do it. And every child should be given the opportunity to reach their potential – no ceilings.

Technology is very bad. Technology reminds me of the turbunence, strapping down your seatbelts, thug shaker, and people getting addicted to their phones, whenever i go in public people start doing turbulence, and always yelling out stuff and it influenced our society very big.

Stop being rude.

Technology can be a distraction for students, making it difficult for them to focus on learning. For example, students may be more interested in checking social media on their devices than paying attention to the lesson. Also when students rely too heavily on technology, they may become less capable of solving problems or completing tasks without it. This can hinder their ability to develop critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

no you are wrong

i think that it is not that it is not that bad to have a phone

Maybe so. However, the use of technology and electronic devices can have negative effects on concentration and the ability to write well-structured sentences. Everyone, including educators, need to find a balance and limit the use of technology to enhance academic performance.

pluh using ai

Technology needs to be included to a certain degree but if we use it in every aspect of learning, you will see more and more children suffering with ADHD, ADD, and other learning issues. I see it now with children as young as 8 years old walking around with smartphones!

The good news is there is no evidence in this study or anything else I’ve read that cell phone use would create ADHD

There are pros and cons to everything, that’s why everything should be used in a controlled way. This is true nothing can replace the conventional method of teaching, but we can make it more interesting and better for students with a little use of tech. Like the use of animation, quiz polls, etc. So everything is cool until it is used in a particular way.

I would like to point out that you’re contradicting yourself on the Pro#4 with the interaction of a student via tech, and with the Con #3, that a student needs to interact with oral participation. The Pro #4 would discourage oral participation, which I believe is huge asset for all students. A student should be encouraged and helped with speaking out on different discussions. Teaches would call on me, even though they knew I didn’t like it, but it helped me get over my shyness. I hated speech in high school, but I did it and thank God for it. It has helped me tremendously.

That’s a good point Billiam. We shouldn’t lose the art of conversation and talking in person. Using technology to engage students is a balancing act.

I think it’s imperative that kids learn technology. Just don’t abandon everything. For example, we don’t use quills and inkpots (or fountain pens for that matter), but we should still teach kids to write with pens and pencils. That includes cursive, which is proven to help kids’ learning. There are grey areas though. One of them is calculators. We don’t teach kids how to use slide rules, but should we abandon calculators for certain situations? Then there are things that have completely been abandoned, but for no good reason. Why can’t kids tell time with non-digital clocks?

I can agree on most of your points. My question would be, when do we introduce students to technology? Call me old fashioned, but I believe that the task of learning simple math (1-3 digit computations), parts of speech, and sentence structure should be taught without the use of any type of technology. As students progress, I think technology is a great thing to interject into education. I do believe, however, this should be minimalized until about fifth grade. Students taking assessment test need to know how to write instead of just clicking on an answer. Calculators were never allowed in school until junior high when I attended. There are many students, in the school where I work, that will not write because they do not know how to form the letters on paper. Many times the students who do know how to write, have horrible handwriting because they do not write every day. Yes, technology is wonderful, but at what age should it be introduced in order for students to be able to succeed before technology is used?

This is how I see technology in the classroom: you have to use a hybrid model because there is no escaping how ingrained technology is in our lives and even more in the students’ lives. I would argue that in some cases the students are ahead of their teachers when it comes to being tech-savvy and understanding where things are headed. However, there are traditional skills that are overlooked far too much including reading from books, writing (printing and cursive), and doing research without a computer. Add these items to your article and I can’t think of any better description of the pros and cons of using technology in classrooms.

Essay about technology advantages and disadvantages – Analytical Essay

Introduction

Technology is now a big part of our society and our foreseeable future. There is little room for people that wish to live without technology, and luckily, it is still advancing at a rate that has helped stave off stagnation. Here I analyze the advantages and disadvantages of technology

Thesis statement

I believe that for every advantage that technology brings us, it also brings us a disadvantage at the same time.

Analysis of cars on our roads

Cars and other vehicles are now readily available and are technologically advanced enough to be safe for use every day and to work as a reliable tool for getting people and goods from one place to another in a relatively short space of time.

The advantages of cars are that they are safe and that people can get to very specific places as per their own timeline. People do not have to rely on trains or planes in order to get to where they want to go, and they can set off at their own time and arrive when they wish without having to work around a train or plane schedule.

The disadvantage is that all forms of vehicle on our roads are polluting the atmosphere and are slowly killing the earth by adding to greenhouse gasses that do not allow the sun’s heat to escape. Even electric cars are powered by electricity generated by fossil fuels. Car accidents are also a very big killer worldwide and many lives have been lost because of car accidents/incidents.

Analysis of Smartphones

They allow people to stay in touch, even over long distances, and they are relatively safe and reliable to use. There are devices that can communicate with plus at the other end of the planet and getting and keeping in touch with other people is very easy.

The disadvantages to this is that it means people no longer need to meet in person as much, and interpersonal relationships are suffering worldwide because people are communicating through a small handheld device. Lots of people have Smartphones and they use them almost semi-continuously, including in public settings when they could be making new friends, finding new lovers, and talking/interacting with their current friends. Analysis – Fast and efficient Internet access

The advantages are that people can communicate over vast distances and can gain access to information and answers to their questions very quickly. The disadvantage is that the Internet isn’t moderated in the way that people think and a lot of it is filled with misinformation and outright lies.

Even brand-named websites that have a lot of trust are not accountable for what appears on their own websites. Even respected and branded news sites have stories that have passed through many people’s hands and originally started as lies with zero accountability throughout the dissemination process. For example, that is why so many celebrities have been reported as dead on news sites when they were actually alive. Conclusion

My analysis proves that technology is a good thing, and that is has its advantages, but that with each technological element we gain disadvantages as well as advantages, and many times those disadvantages are overlooked by technology users.

22 Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology in Education

The modern classroom has taken several steps forward in its evolution of the learning environment in the past 25 years. Many of the benefits that we have seen in this setting are due to the introduction of new technology options for students. Instead of having a single computer for a class to use or a laboratory environment for the entire school placed in one room, we can now help students learn at their table or desk with items issued to them directly.

Our development of the Internet since 1989 has helped us to include more technological access to information in the modern classroom as well. If you grew up as an 80’s kid, then you had the A/V cart come into your class to watch educational videos and maybe have a snack. Now students get to play interactive learning games, compete against other students, and have their educational statistics tracked in real-time data to know where their point of focus should be.

Introducing technology to students in a classroom setting can certainly help the educational environment, but it also requires equal access for all students to ensure that everyone receives the same opportunities to success. That is why each school district, teacher, and parent should periodically review the advantages and disadvantages of technology in education settings.

List of the Advantages of Technology in Education

1. Technology helps children to stay motivated during the learning process. Most students don’t like to go to school if they feel like they are wasting their time. When there is technology allowed in the classroom, then teachers have an opportunity to let kids work at a pace which suits them the best without disturbing others. They can look up additional information about a subject they are learning about that day, play educational games that reinforce the lesson, or work on advanced material using a program like Zearn.

Because many of today’s technology options allow students to see how well they are doing compared to the average of all users, it gives them a chance to push harder for themselves and their education. Many of the programs that encourage learning also issue rewards or award certificates, which helps to make the lessons fun as well.

2. It encourages more communication between teachers and parents. When there is technology in the classroom, then there are more opportunities for parents and teachers to connect with each other. Using a blog for the classroom can help parents get to see what their children are learning each day. Apps and software options allow teachers to instantly report on a child’s behavior to let parents know in real-time what is happening throughout the day. There are options for chat boxes, instant messaging, and other forms of communication as well.

Let’s not forget about email here either. Since the 1990s when this technology option came into the classroom, it created more reliability in messaging between teachers and parents should there be a need to talk.

3. Technology options in the classroom are very affordable. Although the cost of having technology in the classroom can be significant if you are introducing new options to an entire district, the cost of student computers, tablets, and class essentials is minimal. Most student computers cost less than $200 each, and there are several grants available on local, state, and national levels that help to offset these costs to local taxpayers.

“The Internet is the first technology since the printing press which could lower the cost of a great education and, in doing so, make the cost-benefit analysis much easier for most students,” said John Katzman. “It could allow American schools to serve twice as many students as they do now, and in ways that are both effective and cost-effective.”

4. It creates new ways to learn for today’s student. There are three critical forms of intelligence that we see in children today: emotional, creative, and instructional. The traditional classroom environment, which typically encourages lecture-based lessons, focuses more on the latter option. Standardized tests and similar ranking tools do the same. When kids have access to technology today, then those who excel outside of the standard learning setup can still achieve their full potential.

Technology allows children to embrace their curiosity in multiple ways. They can try new things without embarrassment because their tech access gives them a level of anonymity. This process allows kids to work, through trial-and error if they wish, to see if a different strategy helps them to learn more effectively.

5. Technology allows us to give students access to data from a single location. Do you remember when a research project meant a visit to the library so that you could pull 4-5 books to read, have access to an encyclopedia, and even microfilm to view so that you had enough resources to finish your assignment? Technology allows a student to access every item they need for a project from a central resource. Instead of spending all of that time searching for something specific or waiting for your library to order it, you can run a few queries on Google and find what you need.

6. It gives us better access to behavioral data on students. The various apps, software choices, and technological platforms collect data on students that can show attendance patterns, learning issues in specific subjects, and how they react in particular situations. This information leads to the creation of a profile where teachers, schools, and parents can work together to identify places where additional learning may be necessary. Technology can even help a school district find their highly capable students to keep pushing them toward more challenging work so that they remain engaged with the learning environment.

7. Technology helps to prepare students for their future world. Even if there are warnings from medical providers about the amount of screen time that students receive in their classroom environment, the reality of the modern educational system is that we must have technology exposure now to prepare our children for the world they will face as adults. This sector will continue to evolve. If they are not prepared to use these items today, then tomorrow could be a struggle for them.

That means some traditional subjects might not be as important to teach for some schools or teachers. Is it more important to have a student learn how to write in cursive or know how to type without using the two-finger chicken-pecking method? Is coding more of a critical skill than learning how to cook? Should kids know how to put a chair together in woodshop or have the ability to put together their own computer?

These are the questions we need to be asking when looking at the advantages and disadvantages of technology in the classroom.

8. The introduction of technology allows for the teaching of needed vocational skills. Although there are regions of extreme poverty and isolation which do not have Internet access in the United States right now, over 90% of Americans have a home connection to online resources. By introducing technology to students from an early age, we can teach them the critical vocational skills that are necessary for success in a digital world. That is why writing continues to be a top priority in the K-4 grades, formatting guidelines and software use after, and knowing how to research efficiently is approached as an essential skill.

9. Technology in the classroom encourages collaboration. Students retain very little of the information they receive when a teacher lectures from a textbook. When there are interactive lessons on a chalkboard or whiteboard, kids can remember about 20% of what they were taught. If a teacher encourages a small group discussion, that percentage can quadruple.

Technology gives us an easy way to develop collaboration skills for students using online tools that encourage them to work together in safe ways. If kids can then practice what they were taught immediately, there is very little that they will forget.

10. It encourages students to stay engaged with their learning environment. Kids get bored very easily when they feel like they already know what is being taught in their classroom. Some children will transform into mentors or leaders in this situation to help their fellow students, but there are many more who disengage because they lack stimulation. By introducing technology to the classroom, there are fewer places where repetitive learning must take place. Teachers can introduce new subjects, try new techniques, or use different projects to encourage ongoing learning, which creates more overall engagement.

11. Teachers have more credibility when they use technology in the classroom. Teachers are sometimes hesitant to use technology in the classroom because they are unsure of what a student might have at home. Giving homework assignments that require computer access to a student without that technology at home would be a waste of time. There can also be pushback from parents who are uncomfortable giving their kids additional screen time for learning. When you can introduce these elements to the classroom and have children learn there, then you can overcome the socioeconomic barriers that are sometimes in place for low-income families.

List of the Disadvantages of Technology in Education

1. The presence of technology can be distracting to students. When kids play video games, they can find themselves reacting with addiction-like behaviors. Their focus is on the entertainment they receive more than anything else. If the educational environment uses reward-based games to encourage learning, then the child might be more concerned with what they receive through the software or app instead of what they are learning.

Although correct answers can be an indication of knowledge, there might not be as much information retention as hoped. Teachers must set and enforce healthy boundaries when using technology in the classroom to ensure healthy results are possible.

2. Technology can make it easier to cheat. Remember the TV shows and movies where kids would break into a teacher’s classroom, steal the answer key to a test, and then write down everything on their wrist, shoe, or a slip of paper? Now a student can send themselves a text with that information. They can send that data to anyone else with a phone. Email can relay this info too. There must also be strict rules in place about the use of technology during quizzes or tests when an exact measurement of student knowledge is needed to evaluate their overall progress.

3. Using tech can cause some students to disconnect from the classroom. Interacting online with others is a different experience than when you collaborate over the Internet with someone. Being behind a screen provides you with a layer of anonymity that you don’t receive with a face-to-face conversation. Learning how to work with one another using technology is an essential skill, but it cannot be the other option that teachers introduce to their classroom. We must encourage social interactions that accurately communicate thoughts, feelings, or emotions so that when a child is offline, they can still make a better life for themselves.

4. Some students may not know the difference between reliable and unreliable resources. There is a lot of information on the Internet today that is fake or exaggerated in some way, but it masquerades as being real. According to research published by New York Magazine, less than 60% of web traffic today is actually human-based searches or content interaction. Up to half of the traffic on YouTube each year are bots that masquerade as people. Not only is the content sometimes fake, but then also the users might not be real too. Teachers must show students how to access real information, show them how to verify its validity, and then encourage them to use it appropriately.

5. Technology is a resource that not all families can afford. Whether technology is in the classroom or at home, there is the issue of affordability to worry about in today’s world. Some households cannot afford to purchase computers for their kids to manage their school work. There are school districts that don’t have enough money to pay their salaries each year, much less add new tech components for learning.

When we emphasize having technology in the classroom, then we place those at the lowest end of the wage scale at a significant disadvantage. Students with greater access can learn more and have access to lessons more often, which means they have additional information exposure that can increase their opportunities to succeed.

6. Some technologies could replace the teacher in some classrooms. Interactive learning lessons are so effective today that the software or app can become the teacher instead of having someone present to help a student. One of the best examples of this potential disadvantage is ABC Mouse, which provides clear instructions to students as young as 3 so that they can start learning when they are ready.

Instead of being in a hands-on role, technology makes the teacher more of an observer. New tech automates the learning process while adapting to changing student needs.

7. There are privacy concerns to consider with technology in the classroom. Over 15 million people each year experience identity theft in some way. It is a criminal empire that costs the economy over $16 billion per year. Since 2011, over $100 billion in losses have happened because of this issue. One of the reasons why it is becoming more prevalent is because more people have greater access to technology today.

When we introduce technology to the classroom, we are placing the identity of our children at risk every day. Even when apps, computers, mobile devices, and operating systems have advanced privacy filters that reduce the threat of identity loss, there is no way to guarantee that all risks are gone unless the equipment never goes online. If we take this step, then we end up losing many of the advantages of having technology in the classroom in the first place.

8. Technology in the classroom could create medical problems for some kids. Eye strain occurs when you look at a computer screen for too long. Symptoms of this issue include back pain, eye pain, neck pain, feelings of tiredness, blurred vision, and problems with focus. Continuous heavy computer usage may lead to issues with early myopia, with a prevalence rate of more than 60% for those older than the age of 12. For some people, the impact of this health issue is cumulative, which means the time they spend in front of a phone, tablet, and television can contribute to eye health issues as well.

9. Kids often lose track of time when using technology in the classroom. Although kids can adapt to changing environments without much of a second thought, their idea of normal is often defined by what they experience in the classroom. Teachers and schools have as much, if not more, time with children than their parents throughout the day, which means the classroom becomes an influential part of life for each student. Encouraging the use of tech might help to create more learning opportunities, but it can also lead to a lifestyle that is more sedentary.

When children sit for too long during the day, then they face the same health challenges that adults do when not getting enough exercise. There can be problems with obesity, hyperactivity, muscle fatigue, sleeping problems, and metabolism issues with prolonged sitting. That is why any school that introduces technology to the classroom should also encourage at least 30 minutes of moderate physical activity whenever possible.

10. Many classrooms place limits on technology access. Because of the awareness that schools have with the potential disadvantages that technology can cause in the classroom, there are limits placed on the use of items under the guise of child protection. Although firewalls and site blockers can prevent most dangerous content from reaching the eyes of children, it is not unusual to see this issue taken a step further by restricting computer work to word processing and basic research. Students come home with assignments to use tech of their own, at a library, or through a loan program to place this responsibility on the parents instead.

If we force limits on children instead of teaching them how to make wise choices, then is that really giving them a learning environment?

11. Technology can create dependencies for information recall. If you cannot recall a piece of information instantly, then what is your next step to find an answer? Most people would say that they would look online for the data they want or ask a virtual assistant, like Alexa, to give them the answer. Having access to a treasure-trove of resources is wonderful, but it can also create a dependency because of its presence. If we do not teach students how to recall info by themselves without the use of a smart device or computer, then the next generation of students may be unable to function unless there is technology for them to access.

Verdict on the Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology in the Classroom

These advantages and disadvantages of technology in the classroom indicate that students and teachers can be more effective in their roles with its presence. Although there can be varying levels of comfort based on the amount of exposure each person has to computers, electronic whiteboards, and other items, an introduction of new tech is an investment that can offer ongoing dividends.

There are times when technology can provide new experiences to a student. Teachers can use apps and software to reach kids that might normally disconnect from the classroom.

Technology in the classroom opens more doors, introduces new experiences, and creates more opportunities for self-discovery. The positive aspects that occur with school integration typically outweigh any of the issues that a district might encounter.

Technology in the classroom: Advantages and disadvantages

  • Phones & technology

Written by the InnerDrive team | Edited by Bradley Busch

The digital age is well and truly upon us. The last decade has seen a spike in the introduction of  technology in schools . Whilst students may have previously hidden their electronics from their teachers, many are now being encouraged to bring and use them in class as learning tools.

It is one of education’s biggest debate at the moment: does technology in the classroom help or hinder student achievement? With such amazing advances in technology over the past decade, the temptation would be to use as much of it as possible. But just because some technology is available, does it mean we should use it?

We know from various pieces of evidence that excessive mobile phone use can have a negative impact on students. For example:

  • Students who use their phone too much in the evening go to  bed later and get less, lower-quality sleep ;
  • Research suggests a negative association between  screen time and school performance ;
  • And there’s evidence to suggest that  banning mobile phones at school  improves student performance.

So, is technology as useful back in the classroom? And can it play a key role in enhancing learning? Let’s dive into the research and look at the pros and cons…

What is EdTech?

Education technology (Edtech) refers to technological processes and tools to improve education. It includes all forms of technology, from interactive whiteboards to  visualisers  or apps. Its aim is to deliver a new form of learning.

What does the research say about Edtech?

As with most things in education, there are conflicting views as to the effectiveness of Edtech.  Research suggests that  staff believe that technology can enhance their communication with students and reduce teaching pressure. However, they also have concerns regarding student achievement and expenditure.

Everyone from parents/guardians, teachers, education professionals to students themselves want to find the best ways to learn. But given that using technology in schools is a fairly recent introduction, what are the pros and cons?

7 pros of tech in the classroom

1. student attitudes and engagement.

Although there is limited evidence so far to suggest that using modern technology in the classroom, particularly tablets, can actually improve grades, there is a whole host of evidence to suggest other benefits (which in turn may translate to improved grades).

For example,  one particular study  found that use of iPads in the classroom increased students’ perceptions of their engagement (e.g. “ the iPad motivated me to learn more course material ” or “ I participated more in class during iPad activities than during activities that did not use the iPad ”). Furthermore,  a large literature review  of the use of tablets in education found evidence that they enable students to be more independent in class and improve their motivation to learn.

Research also suggests  that interactive activities have the potential to boost student learning. For example, online platforms allow students to collaborate and incorporate technology into the classroom, making the act of learning more interesting for today’s students.  Evidence suggests that  technology in the classroom can make students more motivated to learn and take more ownership of their learning.  The same study found that over one-third of teachers found classroom technology was likely to encourage students to be more self-directed and created more interactive lessons.

2. Working with others

We often hear about how phones and technology alienate and disconnect us from real-life social relationships. However, when it comes to tablets in the classroom, it seems to be a different story.

Research has pointed to the benefits of class technology on the more social aspect of learning. For example, evidence from  a literature review  found that, as tablets increased student engagement, they also had a positive effect on students’ abilities to work with others to solve problems and master difficult material. Tablets not only increased communication and collaboration between students, but also between students and teachers and among teachers.

3. Improving a range of skills

Does technology actually have any direct impact on learning? This  large survey study in Quebec  found some key impacts of using tablet technology: it enabled teachers and students to get more creative, improved IT skills (of both students and teachers) and provided a greater variety of resources and learning materials. In line with this, students report that having a tablet makes it easier for them to organise their learning, access their class materials and resources and feel more “connected”.

Another literature review  suggested that using tablets in the classroom may have a positive impact on language and literacy skills. In particular, they found that using e-reading on tablets was a great way to support students who struggled with literacy, including students with English as a second language. However, they did also add that more thorough research is needed to establish any true effect of tablets on literacy skills.

4. Technology for SEN

Another key advantage of using technology such as tablets in the classroom is the power it has to help children with Special Educational Needs (SEN). Tablets can aid the learning of children with SEN in different ways, such as helping children with visual impairments and learning difficulties to read and write, or improving social and organisation skills for those who struggle with these, including autistic children.

In fact, the Education Endowment Foundation outlines technology as  a key recommendation  for ensuring that all students, including those with SEN, have access to high-quality teaching. Using tablets can empower these children. Technology puts them more in control of their learning,  developing confidence  that enables them to improve further.

5. Reducing teacher workload

While the impact of technology on student learning is key, we should consider the impact on teachers too. In the literature on technology in education, teachers report that using tablets for lessons requires little preparation, and that it makes marking classwork and assignments easier. So, used well, technology has the capacity to leave more time for teaching and learning, as well as reduce teacher workload and their hours of planning time.

6. Improves digital literacy

The  House of Lords report  stated that “ Digital literacy should be the fourth pillar of a child’s education alongside reading, writing and Mathematics… ” Although we wouldn’t put it on a par with those other areas, in today’s world, being tech-savvy is an important skill for students’ learning and future career. Integrating technology as part of their education could build a foundation for students to benefit from in the long term.

7. Bridging the gap

Finally, technology has the capacity to bridge the worrying  attainment gap . It has the potential to do this in two ways…

The first one is that technology allows to extend learning to the home environment.  One interesting study  compared tablet use between students who personal owned a tablet they could take home and students who could only access tablets for certain lessons. The researchers suggested that personal ownership was the “ single most important factor for successful use of tablet technology ”. Personal ownership gives the same access to learning outside of school as more advantaged students to more disadvantaged students who might otherwise have to share devices at home – if they have any.

However, the attainment gap is  not only about a rich/poor divide . There’s also the gap between the more outgoing children who thrive in the classroom and the more quiet, non-assuming but equally bright students who might do better with more time to get their head around things. These students may have thrived in remote learning, able to work at their own pace and developing their confidence.

One of the biggest causes of the attainment gap is actually that different students need different amounts of learning time. The second way rests on the idea that technology (such as in the form of personal tablets) can continue to allow a more personalised learning experience both in class and at home. This can enable students to work at their own pace and help to bridge the attainment gap.

Furthermore,  evidence suggests  that extending students’ abilities to learn outside classroom further supports their independent learning and helps them to  develop metacognitive skills .

7 cons of tech in the classroom

1. associated costs.

Of course, the main drawback of technology in the classroom is the cost involved. For example, using tablets with personal ownership could mean big benefits but also big costs. What’s more, if only the wealthier schools and areas can afford this luxury, this may only exacerbate the disadvantage gap. And even if every school could afford it, it is worth considering the opportunity cost – could this money be better spent elsewhere?

Even as tablet technology becomes more widely available and the amount of education technology content is increasing, they  remain expensive  and simply aren’t accessible to all students.

2. Tech = distraction = teacher workload

Let’s be honest: any device with an internet connection has a potential for distraction. Need to message a friend? You can do it right there. Fancy a quick game? Right there. Want to check the weather for this weekend? Right there.

The large survey study in Quebec , despite finding that tablets in the classroom had a positive impact on learning, also found that many students found it hard to resist the temptations of chatting with friends or playing games. And teachers felt that this was impacting students’ academic achievement.

Furthermore, a study published in the  Journal of Communication Education  showed that students without mobile phones performed better academically as they were able to recall more detailed information. These students also scored a full grade-and-a-half higher on a multiple-choice test than those who actively used their mobile phones.

However, many people still feel that distraction should not be a barrier to the benefits of technology in the classroom, and that avoiding technology distraction is simply a matter of classroom management. Efforts to limit distraction can include shutting off internet access during lessons and restricting access to certain websites and apps.

Even if this is the case, as educators, are we just making life more difficult for ourselves? Are we simply adding to the workload of classroom management? And is it really worth it?

3. Everyone needs paper

Distraction isn’t the only potential way for technology to disrupt classroom learning. An  influential piece of research  conducted at Princeton University found that students who hand-wrote notes in class had greater understanding of the content and performed better in a test than students who took notes on a laptop.

There should be a warning against going all-tech.  Writing on paper remains an invaluable skill  for students. Even if you decide technology is a great tool in your classroom, it’s important to leave time to practice writing by hand, on paper.

4. The Google Effect

Even if typing notes doesn’t hinder learning, there is a potential technology issue that occurs with finding information online. This is nicely illustrated by a particular thinking bias called The Google Effect. Also referred to as  digital amnesia , this is when people are more likely to forget information they can easily find online through search engines like Google or Bing. When people believe the information will be stored online or saved electronically, they make less of an effort to remember this information.

This “cognitive offloading” can help to free up our cognitive load, allowing us to focus on other information. However, if students over-rely on technology to remember information for them, they won’t transfer this information into their long-term memory. And  when Google isn’t here to help  them in exam situations, they won’t be able to recall it.

5. Room for cheating

Access to technology means access to messaging services or internet searches. This could allow students to google or ask their peers for answers to test questions or how to complete a task.

6. Fake information

The internet is open to almost everyone. Whilst this is beneficial to many, it also allows people to provide inaccurate information to others. It is important for students to be aware of  how to identify reliable sources .

7. Logistics

One thing you never see on the fancy Edtech promo videos is the stress of charging 30 tablets, the Wi-Fi going down at the worst time, or students forgetting their login details. The nitty-gritty reality of using technology in the classroom often isn’t as smooth or effortless as it may first appear. Therefore, there is potential for it to eat into valuable teaching time, meaning the opportunity cost isn’t just financial.

Final thoughts

Modern technology, such as tablets, could play a very important role in enhancing education, as well as helping to bridge the achievement gap. However, to avoid problems of distraction, it needs to be skillfully implemented. This means good organisation, classroom management and, of course, there may be large costs.

That is the big picture. Ultimately, it’s up to schools to weigh up the information and consider whether benefits outweigh costs and effort, to decide if and how they can use modern technology in their classrooms.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology in Students Life

The rapid advancements in technology have had a profound impact on the lives of students around the world. From smartphones to computers, technology has infiltrated every aspect of student life, bringing with it both perks and pitfalls.

In this article, we will explore the manifold advantages and disadvantages of technology in students lives. We will delve into how tech tools can expand horizons beyond the four walls of their classrooms and how they can also be a potential source of distraction. Ready for a deep dive?

Advantages of Technology in Students Life

Advantages of Technology in Students Life infographic

1. Easier access to information

Through email, WhatsApp, Viber, and other means of communication, students can easily access class notes and assignments.

Students are kept updated with their classwork through this method. Smartphones and laptops enable them to read at their convenience.

PCs and laptops were used for taking notes in the early days of technology. PCs or laptops are no longer even considered by students nowadays.

Smartphones and tablets are the only devices they use. We should think about how our grandparents and parents access class notes. The students would visit the library to collect information on those days or meet the teacher in person.

2. Gather student performance metrics easily

Teachers are able to perform their job better with the help of technology in education . Testing and learning environments that collect data automatically have the following advantages.

Students receive instant feedback, teachers are freed from repetitive grading exercises, and more student performance data is collected.

It is possible to point to the areas where an individual student is having the most difficulty with help from platforms that produce data analytics.

In response to the data gathered and analyzed, instructors can quickly adjust their teaching strategies and syllabus.

Due to the data advantages, technology-based approaches may be preferred over traditional methods when learning goals can be achieved with approximately equal effectiveness.

It is likely that technology and instructional content will continue to improve over time in this digital environment. The traditional methods of instruction are being left behind more and more.

3. Independent learning has become easier and more effective

The modern age of digital technology has revolutionized the way we learn . The emergence of independent learning has enabled students to take control of their own educational path and explore new areas of knowledge with greater ease than ever before.

New tools, such as online tutorials, video lectures and open source education libraries, provide a limitless resource for those looking to expand their skills.

With the aid of the internet, learners can now access educational materials from anywhere in the world without having to rely on traditional teaching methods or institutions.

Furthermore, these resources often come at no cost making it an even more attractive proposition for those seeking to embark on self-directed studies.

In addition, advances in artificial intelligence are helping create intelligent tutoring systems which can aid with instruction and feedback as well as providing personalized guidance tailored specifically to each student’s needs.

4. Good preparation for the future

In the era of rapidly advancing technology, it is essential for students to be adequately prepared for life after graduation.

A well-rounded curriculum including academic studies as well as technological education can set graduates up for a bright future. Therefore, it is paramount that students take steps now to ensure they are properly equipped with the necessary skills and knowledge required in today’s competitive job market.

From STEM classes to digital media workshops, there are many ways student can hone their technical capabilities and make themselves more desirable candidates when it comes time to seek employment.

Students should also strive to gain experience in other areas such as leadership, problem solving and teamwork – all immensely helpful traits when entering the workplace.

Ultimately this will give them an advantage over those who have not taken these important measures early on in their educational journey.

5. Better access to reading materials

You can access course textbooks and notes on your mobile phone, tablet, or laptop. The reading material can be downloaded in PDF format using your mobile phone instead of having tons of books and hard copies.

Three giants include Google, Wikipedia, and YouTube where you can find anything you need to learn. Think of what your life would be like without Google and YouTube.

You should also think back to the days before Google, YouTube, or any other technologies, when your parents and grandparents had to study, finish assignments, complete projects, and graduate without them.

I’m saying this because your parents are more intelligent than you, so you should honor them. Student life is made easier by modern technologies.

6. New teaching methods are being developed

In this modern age of technology, educators are constantly looking for new, innovative ways to approach teaching. With the emergence of a variety of digital solutions and educational technologies, there is seemingly no limit to what can be achieved in the classroom.

This has led to an increased focus on developing new teaching methods that incorporate the latest technologies and offer students a comprehensive learning experience.

The use of artificial intelligence, virtual reality simulations and data analysis tools are just some of the tech-based solutions being used by teachers across the world today.

These tools enable educators to create engaging lesson plans that can be tailored to meet their student’s individual needs while also providing them with a broader view of any given subject matter.

Additionally, these methods allow teachers to quickly assess how well their students are retaining information and even provide feedback based on their performance levels – all through the use of cutting-edge technology.

Disadvantages of Technology in Students Life

Disadvantages of Technology in Students Life infographic

1. Misuse of technology

Technology has been a double-edged sword since it was first invented. While it has brought about many conveniences and innovations to modern life, there are risks that come with its misuse.

The ubiquity of technology within our lives can lead to unwitting abuse, and the consequences can be far-reaching and deleterious.

When using technology for nefarious purposes, people may violate privacy laws or intellectual property rights – both of which can have dire financial repercussions.

Additionally, the overconsumption of technology can cause physical damage to our bodies due to prolonged exposure to blue light, as well as cognitive impairment from digital addiction.

It is thus imperative that we practice responsible usage of this powerful tool while ensuring we don’t succumb too deeply into its alluring embrace.

2. Addiction

Technology is seductive. It catches the eye of people who are young, fun, trendy, and fashionable. 90% of the school population is glued to the screen of their devices doing what they know best.

When you start using modern technology, you may think it’s great but if you are using it all the time, it will be bad. College and university students will grow enough to identify and use modern technologies in a limited way.

Schoolchildren have become addicted to modern technology and that’s not a good practice at all.

3. Access to inappropriate content

The availability of devices with internet access allows students to search for inappropriate materials on the internet.

Such as pornography and violent acts. Keeping an eye on your child at all times should be a parent’s priority. Violent acts and sexual assaults are steadily on the rise in today’s society.

Technology has played a major role in this. We can only benefit from developments in technology when we put them to good use.

4. Instructional challenges

As teachers attempt to adjust to the changing technological landscape of the 21st century, they often face a number of instructional challenges.

As more information is shared and accessed digitally, educators must discover novel ways to effectively incorporate technology into their lesson plans.

Teaching how to use technology as a tool for learning can be difficult due to an ever-evolving array of interfaces and functions that students may have difficulty mastering.

The utilization of technology in education does not just present difficulties for instructors; it also brings about unique dilemmas for learners.

Students must learn how to responsibly interact with digital resources and navigate unfamiliar applications while still meeting course requirements.

Furthermore, these same students may struggle with developing an effective balance between using traditional classroom materials such as textbooks alongside digital media sources like websites and videos.

5. Increased cases of exam cheating

These days students often cheat during tests and examinations. Since they can find information on the internet, they won’t be worried about doing restudy before tests, but they will use their phones to search for information.

Conclusion on the Advantages and Disadvantages of Technology in Students Life

Technology has revolutionized the way students live and learn today. Beyond its many benefits, it also has some limitations in terms of excessive screen time and cyberbullying.

Ultimately, technology is an invaluable tool when used correctly and judiciously. Therefore, it is essential to ensure that students are well-informed about the advantages and disadvantages of technology.

By doing so, they can gain maximum benefit from such innovations whilst avoiding any pitfalls.

Technology has undeniably altered student life for the better and for the worse. It has brought forth an influx of knowledge, modernized educational practices, and facilitated communication.

However, it has also raised concerns about cyber-bullying, digital addiction, and a lack of meaningful face-to-face interactions.

The reality is that technology is not going away any time soon and it is up to both students and educators to leverage its advantages while mitigating its potential pitfalls.

Topic Advantages of Technology

Technology has been widely advancing in the recent years and it continues to become even better with each passing year. The society and technology depend on each other. Sherry Turkle states that “Technology doesn’t just do things for us. It does things to us, changing not just what we do but who we are.” The demand for technology keeps on increasing on daily basis. People use technology in communication, traveling, learning, business, and entertainment. In today’s society, however, people are losing sight of more important things in life such as human interaction. Teenagers would not agree with the fact that

technology has had adverse effects on our lives. The society should, therefore, understand that technology has positive and negative effects socially, mentally and physically but the positives outweigh the negatives.

Social Effects

The advancement of technologies that are able to overcome time and space makes people think that these tools would be applied to gain an understanding of other cultures, meet people all over the world, communicate effectively with others, strengthen familiar relationships and assist people in the society to become more socially adept. Many Americans today tend to believe that technology enhances interaction or socialization since it brings interaction efficiency. While some people might argue that their phones have made their lives easy, I disagree as phones have been the main cause of disturbances especially in meetings

Technological equipment causes disturbances and makes people to be isolated (McGrath 4). Therefore, it is essential to have some knowledge of the positive impacts of the technological factors that impact on people’s social matters. Technology brings easy accessibility connections. Use of internet enabled devices such as phones and computers does not only simplify the way individuals keep in touch with the people they care about, but the information is also much accessible to everyone. It is true to say that most of the young people today especially students use social networking sites. Most of the social network users utilize social network platforms such as Facebook, Instagram, and, LinkedIn (Drago 7). Recent studies also show that use of these sites is increasing every year and it indicates some favorable impacts on the relationships among people in the household (McGrath 4). Creating strong and meaningful relationships is normally about sharing lives with others, and technology can allow people to do so through, texts, photos, videos, and music. Many people assume that online friendships do not last which is not true as some are genuine. I had always believed so till an online friend came to my rescue when I had lost hope of living due to many life challenges.

In a broader perspective, technology has improved communication particularly broadcasting of news or information to the people in the society. Radios, television, internet and social media platforms have improved the way individuals broadcast news and exchange ideas which can help in developing society. In various nations, television and radios are applied to vice the concerns of the society. Live forums are always organized where the community can make their contributions via text services or call using mobile phones. At the political elections, contestants use radios, television and internet mead to reach people they are aspiring to serve.

On the other hand, however, technology has had negative effects as argued below. Some of the sites contribute to the poor relations among the people in the society; for example, sites such as Facebook, Instagram among other sites have contributed to social issues such as racism and enmity among the diverse social networks users (Elsobeihi 3).  Some of the cruel users tend to abuse people via social media networks thus contribute to animosity among the people in the diverse parts of the world since it brings some ideologies that certain communities are not friendly; for instance, the scene where a white person abuses a black person. The whites do not seem to see any problem with this, but I say that it is not acceptable as it is racism. Technology has also contributed to divorces and job loss. I have a friend who lost his job recently as the company adopted the use of computers and therefore his services to the company were no longer needed.

According to Mc Grath, Technology is’ the basis of future social behavior.’ Recent researches show that use of the social networks have highly led to family breakups especially where one of the spouses is not faithful. Most of the communication made between the cheating spouses are done via mobile phones and computers since they can be easily accessed by other parties considering that most of the social sites do not provide sufficient security to the date of the users. I do not advocate for the trend where married people act like they are single on social media with an aim of luring young people. It is unethical. Married people need to be faithful to one another. It has become common today to dismiss the fact that being unfaithful is a sin.

Many employees have been fired because of the contents they post on the social networks that undermined the person’s professional standings. My cousin was fired for this reason. When it comes to the topic of online bullying, most people are guilty hence would try to defend their actions. I, however, agree with the decision to fire online bullies since people seem to take advantage of the fact that people would not trace them. In addition to the negative social impacts brought by social threats is the isolation issue, some of the online communities and virtual worlds feel isolated and outcast due to the criticism that some of the online communities make over others. I would advise the social network users to consider some communication ethics as a way of avoiding adverse impacts of technology to socialization.

Mental Effects

Recent researches indicate that widespread application of digital technology such as computers, smartphones, internet and video games have significant on the development adaptation of the human brain, causing changes in people’s moods, sleep, learning, memory, and concentration as well as behaviors such as aggression and risk-taking. These impacts appear to be more pronounced for the young people in the society. In the general point of view, technology helps people improve diets, track fitness efforts and manage all kinds of health conditions. According to the most researches, being overly connected can lead to psychological issues such as destruction such as depression, distraction, the expectation of gratification and narcissism. Before the widespread of smartphones and internet, students used to have a clear focus and less distraction at school. Currently, most of the students do not feel well without smartphone and internet. Students waste a lot of time browsing the internet, particularly social networks (McGrath 5). I observed that before smartphones and internet era, students used to spend most of their time in libraries and they were always attentive in class and thus their academic performances were good. While it is true that technology can boost academic performance, it can also deteriorate the performance if used irresponsibly.

According to the recent report by researchers at Harvard University, the current students have been found to not be good researchers as compared to the 19th and 20th-century students because internet and computers have made work easier for them especially when carrying out some research due to the availability of the resources in the search engines. Google is one of the famous search engines which help in making research simply because it contains huge information. According to educator, Sutton,’ Computers help students In any way they need, including researching, typing and searching.’ Performing research manually is costly and consumes most of the researcher’s time thus search engines have great importance to all the researchers (Sutton 20).  Contrarily, people

who rely on search engines are more likely to be less creative and innovative since accessing information online is simple and does not require one to think critically. I agree with the research but I think technology has made researchers produce high-quality results because of the readily available content. Of course many will probably disagree with me on the grounds that creativity is most important and should not be traded for quality research.

There are disorders that are connected to the digital technologies. During the past decade, online social networking has led to some changes in the way people communicate and interact and thus it has caused certain psychiatric disorders. Many studies have indicated that the prolonged use of the social media networking sites, such as Facebook and Instagram may be related to the signs and symptoms of depression (Jones 13). Jones argues that certain social network sites activities might be connected to low self-esteem, mostly in children and adolescents. Young people tend to desire what they access online thus raising their expectation without understanding that people have different lifestyles  (McGrath 6). I advise the young people to always be contented with whatever they have and strive to work for their future instead of admiring peoples’ standards of living.

Spending more time online cause sleeplessness and low memory performance due to the exhaustion considering that most people like spending most of their time on their phones and computers instead of relaxing. For example, many people use their phones while in bed instead of sleeping. The most affected population is the students and people who are working during the day because they are supposed to sleep at night as a way of relaxing their brains. Therefore, people should understand that digital technologies among other advanced technologies are supposed to be applied in the right manner to avoid metal issues that are associated with the technology.

Physical Effects

Contemporary day living is a multifaceted compendium of the rapidly advancing technology and the social media. Communication channels are impacting on every part of the society that it may be complex to adjust. Technology has improved the lives of many individuals, with about half of the adults in the United States unable to think of life without their computers and smartphones. According to Elsobeihi, spending more time on electronic devices such as smartphones, tablets and computers cause physical effects. These physical effects include vision problems, neck strain, and hearing loss (Elsobeihi 21). Most people spend an aggregate of 5 hours daily on the screen of their devices. A good example is that people make calls and before they make a call, they must check the contacts, and when they interact with their friends and family via social media they also face the screen. In my view, however, people have to try and minimize the time they spend on the screens including the phones. I recommend a maximum of thirty minutes in a day.

Televisions also contribute to the vision problems because most of the people watch television especially when watching the news, TV shows among other programs (Jones 4).  Neck strains results due to the wrong position of the devices while using. People put their devices at some angles that make one either bend neck down or up. Therefore, due to the reason that people bend their necks down for long, some of the neck pains are experienced especially by those who are addicted to their tablets, smartphones, and computers. I happen to sympathize with the smartphones addicts as they are doing harm to their bodies which they will regret in future.

Hearing loss is caused by noise caused by modern technologies such as music systems. Music systems produce some sound that is always supposed to be regulated, but unfortunately, most of the users prefer high volume. High volume cause damages of the essential ear parts such as eardrums and therefore the evidence suggest that people should stop using earphones with the volume high. It is unfortunate that people

prefer using headphones while listening to music and other entertainments especially when they are in public places.

According to various research analyses, over 50% of the people who frequently use headphones have earing because they do not adjust the volume to the recommended levels. In the ancient era, people had physical exercise culture, but in the contemporary world, people prefer spending their leisure time in social places where they can play video games and drink. Relaxing cause accumulation of calories in the blood vessels and belly thus causing physical disorders such as obesity and heart failure. Watching and relaxing while chatting with friends online is the biggest contribution to the lifestyle diseases; hence it is always recommended for people to develop a physical exercise culture. Finally, governments and non-government organizations are supposed to hold serious campaigns to enlighten the entire society regarding the adverse effects of the current technology as a way of reducing physical issues in the community.

In conclusion, human interaction is important, but it is always essential to consider both positive and negative impacts of the technologies that are being used to interact with the society.  Social mental and physical effects are of great concern as far as modern technologies and interaction are concerned thus everyone is supposed to get enlightened regarding the favorable and adverse impacts of the technology. Positive impacts of technology in the society particularly in social, mental and physical perspective outweighs the negative impacts. What this really means is that the use of technology has to be encouraged. It is however important for the society to make some little adjustment to reduce any further harmful effects to save the current and the future generations.

Advantages and Disadvantages of Internet Essay

500+ words advantages and disadvantages of internet essay.

The internet plays a significant role in the lives of people today. It is a valuable source of information that helps people share information and communicate with anyone sitting in any corner of the country with an internet connection. But, with many advantages, there are also disadvantages to the internet. With the help of ‘Advantages and Disadvantages of the Internet’ essay, we will throw light on both these aspects. We have also compiled a list of CBSE Essays for students to boost their essay-writing skills. It contains sample essays on several topics, which will give ideas to students and help them write effective essays.

Advantages of the Internet

The role of the internet in the modern world cannot be understated. Nowadays, every person uses the internet to do their daily tasks. People in different fields like offices, schools, colleges, hospitals etc., use their electronic devices like laptops, computers, tablets, cell phones etc., to make their work simple and fast. The internet has also made access to information easier. We can learn about the whole universe with just a single click by using the internet. We can easily communicate and share information with other people around the world with the help of email, instant messaging, video calls etc.

The internet delivers a wide variety of advantages. It not only enables people to share information but also serves as a place to store information and media digitally. This feature has benefitted the fields of education and research the most. We have seen a boom in the e-commerce business as they have used the internet and provided a seamless experience of buying and selling products online. It has created a large market for online retailers and integrated different business fields. Due to this facility, people can now purchase almost everything they need and get it delivered right to their doorstep in a few days. Many services are now provided on the internet, such as online booking, banking, hotel reservations etc.

The internet has made everything a lot more accessible and quick. Most organisations around the world advertise their vacancies on the internet. So, people can search for different types of jobs around the world. The internet provides different types of entertainment to people; be it music, movies, theatre, entertainment, live matches, or live broadcasts. It also helps students to continue their learning through online education.

It is difficult to name all of the benefits and advantages of the internet. This is because the internet has become so entangled and integrated into our daily lives that it has an influence on everything we experience around us.

Disadvantages of the Internet

Although the internet has many advantages, it also has some disadvantages. In the next section of the advantages and disadvantages of the internet essay, let us discuss the disadvantages and the possible risks associated with the modern-day applications of the internet.

While the internet provides us with all tools, products and services we need right at our doorstep, at the same time, it isolates us from the world outside. As we get more accustomed to ordering everything online, be it clothes, food, drinks, grocery, commodities, or even paying bills, getting out of the house has become less frequent. This has caused health issues and various mental health issues such as social anxiety, insomnia and even depression. Teenagers and kids are the most influenced by the internet as they are the generation which has seen the immense use of the internet. They are moulded to a life dependent on the internet. This hinders their learning capabilities and real-life problem-solving skills because they are accustomed to using their mobile for every task.

Today, the internet is the most popular source of viruses in electronic gadgets. As we perform various activities on the internet, we are exposing ourselves to various threats such as malicious software and viruses. Due to these viruses, confidential data may be accessed by unauthorised people or hackers. Some websites contain immoral materials in the form of text, pictures or movies. These websites damage the character of the new generation, especially kids and teenagers. A lot of time is wasted collecting information on the internet. Many people become addicted to spending time on the internet, like chatting with friends or playing games. A lot of information about a particular topic is stored on websites. Some information may be incorrect or not authentic. So, it becomes difficult to select the correct information.

From the information covered in this advantages and disadvantages essay, it can be said that the benefits of the internet outweigh the disadvantages and threats it brings. The responsibility to be safe falls on the users themselves. One needs to stay vigilant and perform regular security checks on their network and computing devices to ensure they are secure from any online attacks. Provided that all government regulations for safe internet browsing are followed and appropriate measures are taken.

21 Technology in the Classroom Pros and Cons

Technology in the classroom isn’t a new concept. Today’s 40-somethings had access to a computer lab in many schools growing up. Kids in the 1980s were learning how to swat flies with a mouse during their computer classes in kindergarten.

What has changed is the prevalence of technology in the classroom. In the 1980s, a school was lucky to have enough computers to support technology learning for one classroom at a time. Today, many schools have students using their own computers and tablets as part of the learning experience.

There is a lot of learning potential available when technology is in the classroom. There is also a higher risk of dependency on technology to recall information when necessary.

These are the essential technology in the classroom pros and cons to consider for parents, teachers, students, and administrators.

List of the Pros of Technology in the Classroom

1. It creates opportunities for active learning. Teachers are able to receive instant feedback about their students when using technology to teach. It makes the learning process more active for students because they are engaging with technology in physical ways. Instead of lectures with a textbook, technology gives teachers an option to create immediate quizzes, online polling, or tools that help further the learning process.

2. It gives credibility to the lessons being taught. Children today are well-versed in how to use technology from an early age. Even parents who are stringent with screen time requirements have children who know how to use computers, tablets, and smartphones by preschool age. That means these children take teachers who use technology seriously because they’re engaging at a level which is familiar to them.

3. It ensures full participation. In the traditional classroom setting, you’ll have students who want to answer every question. You will also have students who refuse to answer any questions. Thanks to technology in the classroom, teachers can easily engage with students who may not be willing to participate publicly with lessons or assignments, creating more 1-on-1 teaching opportunities.

4. It unleashes the power of analytics. Using technology means students are creating information that teachers and administrators can use to benefit the learning process. Teachers could use analytics to determine if there are specific areas of concern for certain students. Those who excel could have their lessons individually tailored to be challenging. With this information, instead of relying on group lessons, every student receives a learning plan that can meet their unique educational needs more effectively.

5. It eliminates the need to carry multiple textbooks. For the K-4 grades, having technology in the classroom reduces the amount of physical space required for numerous textbooks. In the upper grades, students benefit because they can carry their textbooks in an e-format within their computer instead of lugging around a backpack of heavy books. Both groups benefit by having increased information access while benefiting from increased space.

6. It automates time-consuming tasks in the classroom. Apps and tools can be used by teachers to help grade writing assignments. The process of answering frequent, common questions can be automated to reduce time commitments. Students benefit by having auto-correct functions on word processing software, access to internet resources, and online textbook availability with search options that help with subject studies.

7. It provides access to updated information instantly. When you’re using technology in the classroom, you can have confidence that you’re using the updated version or edition of the information being taught. Before this was an option, schools had to consistently updated textbooks, at a high expense, to ensure the most relevant information was being offered to their students. Now schools can worry about providing updated technology with subscription access thanks to many of today’s educational SaaS options.

8. It gives students a real-world skill to use later in life. We are living in a digital world. As technologies continue to evolve, we will find more of our lives dependent upon our knowledge of how to use them. Students who have technology in the classroom have a natural advantage here because they’re learning a real-world skill as they also learn reading, mathematics, and other core subjects.

9. It is a chance to learn about online safety and etiquette. Before the age of 8, children typically trust everything that an advertisement tells them. Up until the teen years, there can still be a desire to trust first and question later. When dealing with an issue like online safety, it is important for children to learn how to safeguard their personal information. Having technology in the classroom allows teachers to offer practical advice and skill development opportunities which can do just that.

10. It can help students with alertness. When exposed to artificial light, it can act as a way to focus on the information being presented. It may boost feelings of alertness while reducing feelings of fatigue. That can encourage the learning process to proceed naturally for students, even if their recovery period at home was not as beneficial as it could be.

11. It can provide more resources for lesson planning. There are plenty of places on the internet where teachers are helping other teachers with lesson planning needs. Some are even providing professional help, creating a unique side hustle that wasn’t always available before. With templates, calendars, and other tools readily available, it can be much easier to plan lessons, create a curriculum, or even plan out the entire year thanks to the technology resources which are available in the classroom.

List of the Cons of Technology in the Classroom

1. It creates socioeconomic separations in the classroom. When technology is in the classroom, students have a prerequisite to know how to use the equipment for learning. For households that are struggling financially, there may not be these technology options in the home. That places these students at a disadvantage because they’d be required to learn how to use the technology before they could begin learning subject materials.

2. It limits homework opportunities for disadvantaged students. Unless the school is able to send the technology home with students, homework assignments which are dependent upon technology become difficult for disadvantaged students to complete. As of 2016, there were still 15% of homes that did not own some form of a computer. Forcing students to travel to a library or some other location for computer access creates more of a time and cost commitment when these may already be issues for them at home.

3. It can become a distraction. As children grow older, technology becomes more of a distraction because of the information access it provides. At the university level, students who use technology in the classroom typically earn lower grades. There are numerous ways a computer pulls a student’s attention away from the learning lesson, from social media to online gaming. When one student is distracted, the effect tends to permeate to the other students in the classroom as well.

4. It changes how students socially interact with one another. There is a real-world skill being developed when students learn how to interact with each other on a personal level. Whether two students decide to become friends is less important than the skills that develop when exploring the possibility of a friendship. Online interactions don’t eliminate this process. They just change it. How someone interacts with a person online is very different from how they may interact offline.

5. It can limit physical presentation skills. Technology in the classroom can also go too far, relegating students to online presentations and their ability to design something using specific tools. There is still a need to verbally communicate with others in a public setting. Group collaboration is still a skill that must be present for students who are looking to transition into the labor force. Oral presentations encourage students to practice their public speaking skills. For that reason, technology should be used as a tool, rather than serving as a substitute for the teacher.

6. It could encourage cheating in the classroom. Let’s face it. Some students have always worked harder at trying to find ways to cheat than they have studying for the lesson. With technology, it’s very easy to copy-and-paste the work of someone else to submit as their own. There are even freelancers who are willing to write essays for students online for a small fee. It is possible to structure lessons in a way that makes it difficult to cheat, such as making classroom questions a little different for each student. There must be vigilance here, however, to reduce the risks of this particular disadvantage.

7. It requires students to understand the quality of research materials. Technology makes it easy for information to spread quickly. A recent quote from a senior cleric in Iran stated that 2,500 Iranians received U.S. citizenship while negotiating a nuclear deal with the country. The story was run in the U.S. by quoting the state-run news agency which quoted the single cleric. Once it was published in the United States, President Trump tweeted about the article, which led to it being evaluated as fact instead of what it was: a single quote from a biased individual. We must teach students the difference between a high-quality resource and a low-quality resource when researching information.

8. It can make lesson planning more difficult. If teachers are choosing technology in the classroom, then they may need to work with software vendors individually. They may be asked by their school district to apply for grants on their own time. There may be student training needs to meet when introducing the technology for the first time. Teachers will also become the IT help desk of the classroom whenever there is a question from the student. These can negate the time advantages that the other benefits are able to provide.

9. It may over-stimulate students. Access to the blue wavelength light emitted by computers may over-stimulate some students, which may lead to behaviors in the classroom. Modern computers offer a setting that can negate this light, using warm tones on the screen to lessen this effect. Glasses are available to counter this light issue as well. This does create an extra step in the learning process that some students (and parents) may not wish to follow if it involves an extra cost.

10. It reinforces concepts of inequality. In the past, socioeconomic divisions in classrooms were based on the quality of clothes or the cleanliness of the student. Today, inequality is measured by the type of technology a student is able to use for learning. Schools are not immune to this either. Some districts don’t have the cash available to fund technology in the classroom yet. That means there will always be some students who fall through the cracks, which may create a lifelong issue of always trying to play catch-up with their education.

These technology in the classroom pros and cons show that moderation is the key to its success. There are times when having access to technology is highly beneficial to everyone. Many schools also find that there are times when technology access can be a hindrance. By evaluating these key points, everyone can work to find the proper balance required for a well-rounded learning experience.
