Belaku – The Hampi Interpretation Center
Author : Harshit V Shastry Site Location : Hampi, Karnataka Institute : SJB School of Architecture & Planning, Bengaluru Advisor: Ar. Sachin Shetty
description
The Genesis of an idea took place at the UNESCO World Heritage Site at the historic town of Hampi, Karnataka,India. The Ancient Capital of the Vijayanagara Empire that Hampi once was was renowned for its finesse and intricacy in multiple facets of engineering and design, in terms of Town Planning, Architectural Detailing and Sculpting. In recent times, the heritage structures within the historic site have been prone to desecration both by Natural and Manmade means. Thus, the Government of Karnataka and the Archaeological Survey of India under the guidance of UNESCO have come up with a proposal for an Interpretation Centre that can increase awareness and knowledge amongst people and prevent further desecration of heritage property.
From an Architectural point of view, Hampi provides abundant knowledge with respect to Cultural Nodes , Landmarks and the Series of Spatial Transitions between them, the Interplay between light, shadow and structure and how the combination of these features gives rise to a New Typology of Space making and an Ambience that deeply affects the psyche of the Viewer. The proposal for the Interpretation Centre positively opens up multiple possibilities to further explore these features and interpret them in a Modern Architectural Dialect.

The intention of the studio was to design an Interpretation Center in Dholavira, by a process of sketches, models, matrix and working drawings. The design process starts with the exploration of conceptual ideas, which evolve in to some kind of tangible form. The built form responded to the site context, climate, various structural possibilities and indirect light. Initial idea was to create a wind tower for passive ventilation in response to the oppressive conditions of the site which helps in maintaining consistent temperature inside the built form. Space planning is done such that the services and circulation are kept separately, creating an ease for the users. The main idea was to have the interior space devoid of structural wall/columns which is achieved by using frame structure.

The design dissertations seek an attempt to capture the essence of changing neighborhoods and find bridges between the micro and the macro, the individual and the community, the neighborhood and the city. The dissertation process is an attempt to captivate the architectural spirit of harmony between the communities and nature. Manori Gorai Uttan (MGU) area is a picturesque peninsula jutting into the Arabian Sea located in the extreme north-western part of the cities of Mumbai and Mira-Bhayandar. The area is un-dulating, has a rich concentration of mangroves, rare basalt rock formations and a very scenic coastline. The plan focuses on enhancing the area as a social node with community activities and tourist participation that is high quality, conserving & enhancing the natural features, strengthening the traditional economic activities and improves the quality of life of the local The emphasis is rather placed on "true" programmatic flexibility, seeking strategic and wellthought-out planning and relies on small changes to garner larger perceived effects. This approach thus seeks to not just create a fluid time-based design but one that will truly respond responsibly
Space Distribution 1. Community Centre a)Administration - 230sq.m b)Community facilities - 2550sq.m c)Workshops - 540 2.Interpretation Centre & Visitor Centre -576 sq.m Total - 3900 sq.m

The case study is a research method which generally falls into the broader category of qualitative research. It is largely employed by an array of social sciences such as psychology, anthropology, education and health studies and Science and Technology Studies (STS). Even though the subjects of research, or ‘cases’, may differ between disciplines, there are certain strengths, weaknesses and limitations to case studies that can be summarised to provide a general overview of the method. In my essay, I will explore the characteristics of the case study and link them to examples of the previously documented cases. I will focus mainly on the fields of anthropology and STS as two disciplines that have made case studies their main research tool. In doing so I aim to demonstrate the ways that case studies can be a useful tool in a social scientist’s arsenal.

Duff, P. (2019). Case study. In C. Chapelle (Ed.), Concise encyclopedia of applied linguistics. Wiley. ABSTRACT:This encyclopedia entry provides a methodological overview of case study research in applied linguistics, and especially in the area of second language teaching and learning. The entry begins with a definition and description of case study and references to other recent reviews of this qualitative approach to research. Examples of case study research are presented, together with a discussion of issues and options that arise in conducting and reporting on such research, such as ethical considerations, sampling or selection decisions, issues of generalizability, possibilities and challenges when conducting longitudinal research, and ways of analyzing and presenting data in single-case versus multiple-case studies. Next, the entry discusses ways of including case study in mixed-method research and cites an example from the field of study-abroad research. The entry concludes with some criteria for the assessment of effective and engaging case studies.

Thesis |Interpretation and Research Center| Interfaz | Malaga
The intervention area is located at the end of the promenade “Antonio Banderas” in Malaga. It meets the Mediterrean sea and allows to connect the historic centre with the urban fabric that spreads towards the east side. Therefore it is a strategic situation organizing itself like a transition space between two very different environments representing the limit of the litoral connection and the meeting with a natural space such as the mouth of the Guadalorce river. That is a territory still to be transformed. Its border walls delimit the plot where previously there was “The Repsol butan gas bottling plant”. The area is located in a context, once an industrial network and nowadays a neglected one, which show us the impossibility for the town to absorbe this kind of activity within the urban network and therefore the clear opportunity to reinterpret its configuration.
After the study of the urban metabolism (the exchanges which are carried out in the territory) and the configuration of the field of action, the proyect strategy is based on a new industry, “the cultural industry”. This approach will allow the connection of the new processes (touristic, landscape and investigative ones), that we can find in the territory at present, providing a new opportunity in order to reintrepret the production dynamics developed in this scenery: the territory farming, exploitation and naturalization.
The urban intervention organizes the scenery through a network of connective routes which allow to reconfigure, collect and distribute the different flows that come to the field of action. In this way a limit space is turned into a new space of transition, where the interconnection of present displacements will permit the link with a new generation of processes being part of their same evolution.
After the element examination of the place and the reinterpetation of the traces of the old and bottling floor, the public area organizes itself like a scenery that recovers the productive processes of this territory. It is made up of three strata: the first one, “urban”, comes from the town and connects the tissue allowing fields of transit and activity; the second one,”natural”, provides a new economic engine for the area (urban farming) and recovers the productive activity of Guadalorce valley (sugar cane, citrus and fruit tree); the third one is an element which supports the other two strata organizing itself as a system of artificial wetlands and an ensamble of lagoons with aquatic farmings where the vegetal investigation will be developed in order to close the natural cicle since the recycle and depuration of water.
The investigation center is imagined as a process catalyst. It rises up from the principal node (meeting space) in order to collect and distribute the flows so that it could configure an exchange space and a communication at different levels-interfaces. It is made up as a linear element that connects in a direct way the transition town-promenade-field of action, adapting to the traces of the place, measuring the area and appropriating the existing. A landscape infrastructure recovers the spaces to generate new processes, adjusting to its unstable land and it turns into a connective element or node between nature and artifice.

Hampi Heritage interpretation and convention center By Kunal Jain
Hampi heritage interpretation and convention center is a project on which I arrived from a sense of urgency. A sense of urgency to project and promote the intangible heritage of Hampi and to promote Hampi and its entire complex as a tourist destination and not just the one’s under UNSECO.
Project Name: Hampi Heritage interpretation and convention center By: Kunal Jain
The current situation of Hampi is such that only the structures which are under UNESCO are been promoted at massive scale and because of this all the other historical chapters such as Kishkinda, Pampa devi and many more are been ignored and unexplored thus they still remain in ruined state as they were centuries ago.
Hampi lies on the banks of Tungabhadra in the state of Karnataka. It is known as the “city of victory” and was the capital of Dravidian empire before the Deccan war of 15 th century, ending the Vijayanagara Empire. Later in the 18 th century it was rediscovered by Captain Colin Mackenzie and later after formation of ASI and HWHAMA (the local governing body).
To promote local art and unexplored heritage it was first important that people know about this and to make it interesting it had to be interactive. So the module of interpretation center, workshops and performing centers was selected.
The research first started with documenting and collecting information about the local surviving crafts such as stone cutting and carving, basket weaving and street theatre. Later through the design process of including this art and crafts in my design by means of workshops, using it to build the structures on site and to provide a platform for local performing arts was concluded.
For the visitor to have the wholesome experience of the history the concept of depicting the timeline of Hampi on the site was selected. It would be preceded by introducing the intangible heritage to the visitors, so that they can get a gist of what they are about to experience.
