10 Fall Open House Ideas for Kindergarten
Open House is one of my favorite events. Personally, I prefer the informal setting of Open House over delivering a formal presentation at Curriculum Night any day! It’s a much more relaxed setting, and the kids are always SO excited to show off their work and classroom. However, it can be stressful trying to decide on what bulletin boards to display as well as which work samples you share. In this post, I’ll share 10 fall open house ideas for kindergarten that I have done in my classroom over the years…
1. Welcome to Open House
I created this bulletin board upon request. Simply print and cut, and you’ve got the perfect Welcome to Open House bulletin board to greet your families. I also have Welcome Signs customized for all grade levels pre-k through sixth grade if you would rather have a sign that says “Welcome to Kindergarten.”
2. Picture Time with this Photo Backdrop
Almost every family will want a picture of their child at Open House. You can create this photo backdrop using my We Put the Kind in KINDERGARTEN bulletin board. Display the lettering and leave room for your students to stand below. This will make for the cutest keepsake photos!
3. Student Work Samples
I like to set out the kids’ All About Me books on their desks. Students show their grownups where they sit, and they can take home this book.
4. Classroom Tour
I encourage the students to show their families around the classroom. The kids love showing off their classroom library, where we display the class books they have created so far!
5. Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Bulletin Board
Next, it’s time for the kids to show their work displayed on the bulletin boards inside and outside of our classroom. This Chicka Chicka Boom Boom Board is a parent favorite!
6. Football Bulletin Board
Another great board for Open House is this Kick Off to a Great Year bulletin board . The football writing templates allow students to set goals for the year.
7. Apple Bulletin Board
Our Apple Bulletin Board is always a hit as well. Students write about their favorite apple and color the craft to match!
8. Fall Squirrels and Acorn Writing Bulletin Board
How cute is this board for a Fall Open House?! This We’re Nuts About Fall is a great activity that incorporates fine motor, art, and writing into one adorable craft.
9. Open House Guess Who Game
This Guess Who Game may just be one of my favorite Open House activities! Students color the owl page and you write in the answers in the blank for them. The page flips up and shows their pictures underneath. Parents must read the clues and find their child’s page!
10. Kindness Writing
Last on the list of Open House ideas for Kindergarten is this Kindness Writing Flip Craft included in the We Put the Kind in KINDergarten bulletin board . Students write their names on the outside heart. I write their responses for them on the flip craft. This makes such a cute display!
I hope this post has provided some Open House inspiration! Whatever you plan, I hope you have an amazing night with your students and their families!

Open house is an exciting time! It’s the first time families and students see the classroom. It’s when students and parents meet the teacher for the first time. It can be a stressful, awkward, and anxious event for everyone, including even a seasoned teacher. I’m here to share ideas on quick, easy ways to begin building positive relationships and develop a plan for a fun, no-stress event that everyone can enjoy. Make sure you grab all the freebies and open house printables in this post, too!
Grab the FREEBIE by entering your email in the box at the bottom of this post. This post contains affiliate links which means I earn a tiny commission when you use my links at no cost to you.
Open House Ideas
The table! Set up a table with things families will need. If you have desks or student spots, you can place each student’s items on their desk or spot. On the table are folders, an open house scavenger hunt, a treat for students, pens, and post-it notes. Then, type or write what families need to do at the table. This way, if you are talking with one family, other families know what to do, and they don’t have to wait.
FREE Editable Open House Scavenger Hunt ! Create a scavenger hunt for families to do to help get to know the classroom and morning routine. This gives families something to do, a way to get to know the classroom and practice what to do on the first day of school. This was a game-changer for me and for the first day of school. Families walk in on the first day with confidence because they know the routine.
What’s in the open house folder? I create a folder for each family with handouts to help them get to know the classroom, our routines, our rules, our procedures, and what to expect this school year.
What’s inside:
- event calendar
- Class Rules parent note and mini rules poster (these are other class rules options )
- handout about Green and Red Choices (our behavior management system)
- our daily schedule with what students are learning (editable freebie)
- Meet the Teacher and Meet the Team information page
- Getting to Know You student information page for families to fill out and return (freebie)
- Gift Ideas handout (freebie)
- Family Handbook and other forms I had to have to be a state-licensed home preschool
Student Treats and FREE Tags! Give each student a yummy treat and attach a cute little tag as a fun gift at open house.
>>Grab the FREEBIE by entering your email in the box at the bottom of this blog post!<<
Practice Morning Routine! Put all the things students do during the morning routine on the class scavenger hunt. Families and students can practice it during open house. Students feel much more secure on the first day of school since they will know what to do and where things are. The student’s morning routine is to put stuff away in their cubby, answer the Question of the Day , sign in , say bye to their family, and do the table time activity.
For the sign-in, students will sign their names in at their level. Some students will be scribbling, some will be writing some letters, and some may write their whole names. You can read more about how my students sign in each day HERE .
Family Sign-In and Family Board! On the scavenger hunt, I have families find the sign-in and check to make sure their child’s name is spelled correctly. Names are so important, and I want to make sure every child’s name is spelled correctly. This also gives families a chance to notice the family bulletin board. This is where I keep important information for them all year long.
Center Activities! I want the child to do a quick, simple activity at each center, and I do this for two reasons. One for the student to be able to play in each center. Two, so families know the names of the centers and can see some of the activities in each center. Students learn through play, and I want families to see what kinds of activities students could be doing in each center.
Put AWAY messy activities for open house! You may have siblings at open house, which means even more people in your small classroom. I LOVE having them see their sibling’s classroom, but I put away all slime, play dough, and paint for open house. Just so there is less mess for me to clean up after open house is over.
Practice Hand Washing! Yes, I have students wash their hands as an item on the classroom scavenger hunt! This item is so important that students can practice another classroom routine before the first day. Also so parents know that students should be able to wash their hands and use the bathroom independently.
Family Photos and Name Tags! At the end of the scavenger hunt, I take each family’s photo! I use the photos for student name tags. Students can wear their family necklaces so they can keep their families close to their hearts if they miss them or when they are sad. You can read all about how I make family necklaces HERE .
All About Us Class Book Page! Sometimes, I have students pick a page for our favorite class book, All About Us!, at open house (sometimes I do it on the first day of school). At the table, I set out various colors of cardstock with a directions page. Students can choose any color they want for their page. I set my page out as an example.
Bulletin Boards! Many of the bulletin boards or walls are blank in my classroom because it is where I put student work or projects we do together. These FREE “Under Construction: Waiting for Student Work” signs are perfect to place on your boards, so families know that space is for their child’s work and projects.
First Day of School Prep! After open house, I make sure I have things ready for the first day of school because it can be a crazy day. These FREE Cool Cat First Day of School Certificates are perfect to send home on the first day. I print them on blue paper and write each student’s name on them, so they are ready to go. Grab them HERE .
I also print and cut out these First Day of School Hats for students to color and wear on the first day. Students can use markers, crayons, or paint sticks to color the hats. You could also print them on colored paper just for students to wear.
I hope these ideas and hacks make your open house less stressful and an event you can enjoy with your new families and students. You can check out my other favorite classroom hacks HERE.

3 Secrets to the Best Elementary Open House Ever!
- Back to School , For Teachers , Seasonal Activities , Tips & Tricks
Can I be real here? Seeing Open House on the calendar brought on a huge wave of anxiety for at least the first 5 years of my teaching career. I’m great in a room full of kids, but swap them out for parents and I’m nervous wreck! No more. I’m going to let you in on my 3 secrets to have the best elementary open house ever!
The switch from dread to excitement happened when I started thinking of Open House in the same way I think about teaching a lesson to my class: active engagement, clear delivery, independent work time. Done!
In this post, I’m going to tell you my secret sauce for the best Open House ever! ( And trust me, they are such easy ideas that will completely transform your Open House!) Plus, I’ll hook you up with some epic FREEBIES to make your Open House a breeze!!
Secret #1: Open House Stations for Parents
Parents show up at different times on parent night and there’s always awkward down time before your Open House presentation starts. Give them something to do while you wait for the room to fill up! Stations are an ideal way to get parents actively engaged in your Open House.
Here are the Parent Stations I use, and links to the activities you’ll need the kiddos to prepare beforehand . Stations can be completed in any order:
Parent Playlist – We love playing music in the classroom, if this is something you haven’t tried, add it to your list of “must do’s” this school year! The objective of this station is to collect a playlist created by the parents. Students love hearing “their song” come on and it brings back memories of time spent with their families!
Teacher Prep: Stick an anchor chart/extremely large Post-It note (I LOVE THESE) somewhere in the room and leave a basket of markers. Add your own song or two to get parents going.
Notebook Notes – In this station, parents write a note to their child in one of their notebooks for them to find!
Teacher Prep: Make sure there is a notebook or two at each student’s desk, and something to write with. If you don’t have desks and use individual bins like I did (you can read about my classroom set up HERE ), don’t worry, you’ll see an option for you in the freebie!
Guess Who? – This is SO fun! Parents will have to read clues and guess which mystery student is their child.
Teacher Prep: Print out page 5 of the Open House Freebie and have each student fill it out with 7 facts about themselves. While they’re doing that, snap a photo of each student and send it to your printer (or upload them to a store for printing). Fold construction paper in half, and attach the clues on the outside and the students’ photos on the inside! Hang these in a place where parents can see and interact with them!
Kid Quiz – A classic Open House activity that kiddos and parents love equally!
Teacher Prep: This freebie comes from Rachel Lynette on TpT! Have your students fill out the side that says “My Favorites…” with all of their favorite things. Then, fold the paper in half and leave the blank side facing up. This is the side parents will fill out to see if they “know” their child. I leave this on top of students’ desks when parents walk in so it’s ready for them!
Hopes & Dreams – Start the year off with some positivity and get to know what your parents envision for their children.
Teacher Prep: Put an anchor chart/large sticky note somewhere in the room that is accessible to parents. Leave a basket of pens or markers and a stack of sticky notes .
Secret #2: Collect Important Info
This secret is disguised as a parent station but is really so. much. more!
There are a ton of back to school forms that provide valuable information about our new students that give us insight into their likes/dislikes, learning styles, etc. But that’s just the thing, there are a ton of them, which makes it hard to organize and sift through all the information. That’s why I love a good flipbook. Everything in one place! CLICK HERE to download !
Snack Attack – The objective of this station is to give parents time to complete a flipbook that provides you with important information about their child. (The “snack” part is just a way to get them to sit down and enjoy a snack while they’re working!)
Teacher Prep: To set up this station, print out enough flipbooks for each student in your class and put them on a table, along with some snacks for parents to choose from. Place the station directions nearby and provide pencils for parents to use! **This station will also work if you provide a flipbook or pamphlet of information about yourself! Just choose the station header that correspond s.
Speaking of important info, read about out my all-in-one system for maintaining positive communication with parents and students!
Secret #3: There’s Power in PowerPoint
PowerPoint, Google Slides, Keynote, whatever it is that you use, USE IT! Know what information you need to share with parents, and have it all in one place.
For years I’ve used my First Day and Open House PowerPoint and it has truly made the crazy first weeks of school more manageable and streamlined time after time. I just add my information and tweak it as things change over the years. I never forget what I’m supposed to talk about at Open House, or leave out important info that parents need to know. 👍
P.S.- I use the same resource to teach my students all about myself, our classroom and my expectations during the first week of school. It’s a win-win!
Open House can be fun and exciting for all! Will you be trying out these ideas at your parent night this year? Tell me all about it! Don’t forget to follow me on Instagram and Facebook for more classroom ideas and inspiration!
