Raksha Bandhan: Celebrating Sibling Bonds

Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu holiday that honours the relationship that exists between brothers and sisters. It is normally observed on the full moon day of the Hindu month of Shravana. Sisters wrap a ceremonial thread called a "rakhi" around their brothers' wrists as a symbol of love, protection, and goodwill at Raksha Bandhan. In response, brothers frequently give their sisters presents or marks of appreciation and offer their support and protection. The best time to tie rakhi this year on Raksha Bandhan 2023 will begin at 10:58 a.m. on Wednesday, August 30th and will end at 7:05 a.m. on Thursday, August 31st .

The term "Raksha Bandhan" means "bond of protection." The celebration celebrates not just blood siblings, but also cousins, friends, and those who share a brotherly or sisterly tie. It's a celebration of sibling relationships and the love and devotion they have for one another.

The rakhi thread traditionally represents the sister's prayers for her brother's well-being, as well as the brother's commitment to protect her in times of need. Rituals, sweets, and a sense of connection among family members characterise the celebration.

How Raksha Bandhan Started

Raksha Bandhan's origins are buried in rich mythology and legends from ancient India. The epic Mahabharata's story of Lord Krishna and Draupadi is one of the most beloved. According to mythology, Lord Krishna was deeply moved when Draupadi tore a piece of her saree to bandage Lord Krishna's finger after he sliced it. Krishna, moved by her love and concern, swore to protect Draupadi in her hour of need. This promise was kept during the infamous episode in the royal court in which Draupadi's honour was threatened and Krishna's miraculous intervention saved her dignity. This story depicts an unshakable tie between a brotherly figure and a sister, laying the groundwork for Raksha Bandhan.

Why Raksha Bandhan is Celebrated

Raksha Bandhan symbolises the profound link of love and trust that exists between siblings. It is largely observed in India and is commemorated by sisters tying a rakhi, a decorative thread, around their brother's wrists. This symbolic gesture is a sister's prayer for the well-being and longevity of her brother, and the brother responds with a vow of protection and presents.

This celebration has evolved over millennia to reflect familial harmony, mutual respect, and the tenacious spirit of siblinghood, with roots in ancient traditions ranging from Lord Krishna and Draupadi to King Bali and Goddess Lakshmi.  Raksha Bandhan has crossed cultural barriers and is now celebrated by many people outside of the Hindu community as a universal celebration of love and dedication between siblings.

Raksha Bandhan Celebration

Raksha Bandhan is a joyous and uplifting occasion that includes numerous rituals and customs to honour the tie between brothers and sisters.

Rakhi Tying Ceremony : The major ritual of Raksha Bandhan involves sisters tying a decorative thread known as a "rakhi" around the wrists of their brothers. The rakhi is sometimes embellished with colourful motifs, beads, and even small trinkets. This act represents the sister's love, prayers for her brother's well-being, and desire for his safety.

Blessings and Prayers : Sisters frequently perform an aarti (a lamp-lighting ritual) for their brothers while praying for their longevity, success, and happiness. Brothers, in response, bless their sisters and promise to be there for them in times of need.

Gift Exchange : As a gesture of appreciation and love, brothers traditionally offer gifts to their sisters. Sweets, chocolates, and jewellery, as well as other thoughtful gifts, can be given as gifts.

Gatherings of family : Raksha Bandhan is a time for family to get together. Siblings, parents, and often extended family members meet to celebrate the festival, share a meal, and spend time together.

The bothers, on the other hand, bless their sisters and pledge to take care of them all through their lives.

Symbol of Brother-Sister Love

The brother-sister relationship is extremely special. The way they care for each other is beyond compare. One can never love or care for their friends as much as they love their siblings. The connection and bond one shares with brothers and sisters is simply matchless. No matter how much they fight with each other over trivial things when the time comes they stand by one another and extend their support.

The bond grows stronger as they age and go through various stages of life. They are there for each other in thick and thin. Elder brothers are highly protective of their sisters and the younger ones look up to their elder sisters for guidance. Likewise, elder sisters are extremely caring for their younger brothers and the younger ones seek their elder brother’s help and advice on various matters. A day to celebrate this beautiful bond has thus rightly been established. Raksha Bandhan is special for every brother and sister in the country. • The Legend of Indra Dev

As per the ancient Hindu book, Bhavishya Purana, once when the Gods fought with demons, Indra, the Lord of rain and sky, suffered at the hands of the demon King Bali. Unable to see Indra in such a condition, Sachi, his wife shared the concern with Vishnu. Vishnu gave her a sacred thread and asked her to tie it around Indra’s wrist. Sachi tied the thread wishing long life and success for her husband. Following this, Indra miraculously defeated Bali. The festival of Raksha Bandhan is said to be inspired from this story. Rakhi is considered to be a protective thread. During the earlier times, this sacred thread was even tied to the kings and warriors by their sisters or wives to protect them during the war.

  • Goddess Lakshmi Tied the Sacred Thread to King Bali

It is said that when demon King Bali won the three worlds from Vishnu, he later asked him to stay with him at his place. Vishnu agreed to him however Vishnu’s wife, Goddess Lakshmi did not like his decision. She thus decided to tie rakhi to Bali. When Bali asked her for a gift in return she asked him to send her husband back to Vaikunth. Bali could not say no to his sister. Such is the power of this sacred thread.

  • The Sacred Bond of Krishna and Draupadi

It is said that while killing Shishupala, Lord Krishna accidently got his finger hurt. As his finger began bleeding, Draupadi rushed to him, tore a piece from her sari and tied it around Krishna’s finger. Krishna was touched by this gesture and promised to protect Draupadi. Thereafter, Draupadi tied a sacred thread to Krishna every year. When Draupadi was in utmost distress during Cheerharan by the Kauravas, it was Lord Krishna who saved her. The two shared a very special bond.

  • Rabindra Nath Tagore’s Idea of Raksha Bandhan

Renowned Indian writer, Rabindra Nath Tagore believed that Raksha Bandhan was a day to strengthen the bond of togetherness not just among brothers and sisters but among all countrymen. The famous writer was devastated at hearing about the partition of Bengal. The British government used the tactic of divide and rule to split this province. The Hindu Muslim conflict formed the basis of this division. It was around this time that Rabindra Nath arranged for Raksha Bandhan celebration to bring Hindus and Muslims closer. He requested people of both these religions to tie the sacred thread of protection to each other to strengthen their bond.

In West Bengal, people still tie rakhi to their friends and neighbours to promote the feelings of oneness and unity.

Rakhi holds special significance for siblings. Many of them are unable to meet each other due to their professional and personal commitments. However, they make it a point to take out time for one another on this special day.

(Raksha Bandhan Essay in Hindi)

(Short and Long Essay on Raksha Bandhan in Hindi, Raksha Bandhan par Nibandh Hindi mein)

Raksha Bandhan par Nibandh – 3 (500

(Mythological of Raksha-Bandhan)

(Historical context of Raksha-Bandhan)

रक्षाबंधन का साहित्यिक प्रसंग (literary context of raksha-bandhan), रक्षाबंधन का सामाजिक प्रसंग (social context of raksha bandhan).

(Role of Raksha-Bandhan in Freedom Struggle)

(Government arrangements on Raksha Bandhan)

(Rakhi and modern technical means)

(Epilogue)

रक्षाबंधन पर निबंध 10 लाइनों में (raksha bandhan essay in hindi in 10 lines).

A Short Essay on Raksha Bandhan For Students in Easy Words – Read Here

Twitter

Raksha Bandhan is a celebration of love and affection between a brother and sister that dates back to the Hindu deity Lord Ganesha. It is one of the eight auspicious festivals celebrated by Hindus. The festival is marked by tying a thread (or ‘mangalsutra’) to the wrist of the sister’s brother, which is called Rakhi. This practice is supposed to symbolize the brother’s affection and commitment to his sister.

When a girl gets married, she is not only married to a person but also to a relationship. She is the beautiful one, the sensuous one. She is the one who makes the couple happy and strong. She is the one who gives the couple hope and consolation. She is the one who makes the couple feel secure and complete. She is the one who takes care of the couple.

Protection against all hazards

essay on raksha bandhan for class 5th

Raksha Bandhan is a celebration where a sister ties a ribbon around her brother’s arm and asks him to promise that it will protect her from any danger in the future. The brother promised his sister that he would do what was necessary on his side.

In this world where there is always a problem with girls wearing jeans. Raksha Bandhan is a celebration where a man can show that he is protecting the girls around him.

All girls who have freedom and can do what they want don’t need to be protected by boys who only judge them.

Gifts for sister

essay on raksha bandhan for class 5th

All sisters who tie a ribbon, called Rakhi, around their brother’s arm receive gifts. This gift guarantees that it was given by the brother himself.

Most Indian families still expect a cash gift from their elders, but most brothers will certainly give some kind of gift.

Persons without siblings

essay on raksha bandhan for class 5th

India is the second most populous country in the world, yet there are still so many families without siblings. They are always looking for a sibling to meet on a special occasion, they try to call their cousin or brother on a special occasion to spend time with them and have fun with them.

It is not so important that a true brother is the only one to whom a sister can attach the rakhi. They can even call their current cousin or friend. They love their brothers and tie this Rakhi around their arm.

Nowadays, Raksha Bandhan is celebrated even in schools. The girls sit in class and make handmade rakhi for their brothers and the boys make some kind of card or gift for their sisters. It’s a cute way to make sure the love between brother and sister continues.

Because buying rakhi from a store is much better than making rakhi by hand, and when you make rakhi with your own hands, it is more important than anything else. And the brothers also use their imagination to create greeting cards for their sisters, who make this handmade card.

Rakshabandhan Essay in English ( 500 Words )

1. introduction.

Rakshabandhan is made up of two words ‘Raksha’ and ‘Bandhan’. Raksha means Protection and Bandhan means Bond.

It’s one of the prestigious festivals of the Hindu religion. In this festival, the love of sisters for brothers is shown by tying rakhi on their wrists. This festival not only shows the immense love between each other but also highlights the sacred relationship between them. Also, it strengthens the bond between them.

This festival is celebrated every year in the month of Sawan and according to the English calendar, it falls mostly in the month of August.

It’s celebrated with great zeal in India. Sisters eagerly wait for this day. On this day they tie rakhis to their brothers, they pray to God for their prosperous and healthy life. In return, the brothers show love to their sisters and take a vow to perform their duties well.

2. Why do we celebrate Rakshabandhan?

There are many stories behind celebrating the festival of Rakshabandhan in India, but some of them are as follows.

( a ) When Karnavati sought help from King Humayun

It’s the most famous story behind celebrating Rakshabandhan. When the war was going on between the Muslims and the Rajputs, the wife of the king of Chittor, Karnavati who was a widow was scared by Bahadur Shah Zafar, so the queen sent a rakhi to Humayun, pleading for help. Humayun accepted the request and protected her and her subject from Bahadur Shah Zafar.

From that day Humayun accepted the queen as his sister and thus people started celebrating it as a festival.

( b ) King Bali threatens Lord Indra

According to Hindu mythology, when Lord Indra was threatened by King Bali, his wife Sachi tied a bracelet of protection in his hand to protect him from the evil king Bali. As a result, the rise of Rakshabandhan took place.

3. How do we celebrate Rakshabandhan?

The preparations for Rakshabandhan start a week before. Rakhis and sweets shops start setting up in the markets. These shops are most crowded one day before the festival and on the day of the festival.

People buy sweets according to their needs. Sisters start buying Rakhis from the markets. When they tie rakhis to their brothers, first put a piece of cloth on their heads, perform tika, sweeten their mouths with sweets, and ultimately pray for their healthy life.

Additionally, When they tie Rakhis to their brothers, they take a promise from their brothers to protect them.

On the day of Rakshabandhan, there is a lot of crowd in the house because sisters come to their maternal home from their in-laws’ house. Along with this, different types of dishes are prepared in people’s homes, which are enjoyed by all the family members and relatives.

4. Conclusion

The festival of Rakshabandhan shows the unbreakable relationship between sisters and brothers. It increases our love for sisters.

This festival gives the real identity of the culture of the Hindu religion. In fact, we understand the importance of our sisters on this day. The festival of Rakshabandhan is well understood by those whose sisters tie rakhi on their wrists, but they don’t know the meaning of this festival, those who don’t have sisters.

There are some people in society who are afraid to give birth to girls, but this mentality should be destroyed and without any hesitation, we should be as happy about the birth of girls.

Rakshabandhan Essay in English ( 300 Words )

Rakshabandhan is one of the most famous Indian festivals. In this festival, a sister ties a rakhi or thread on her brother’s wrist.

Although there are many stories about celebrating Rakshabandhan, but the most popular story is that when the war broke out between the gods and the demons, Lord Indra got a little nervous. Then, Indra’s wife tied a silk thread on his wrist to protect him, and finally, he became successful in the battle.

Since then, it has been linked to the festival of Rakshabandhan.

The festival of Rakshabandhan is celebrated by the people of the Hindu and Jain communities with great pomp. This festival is celebrated on the full moon day of Sawan month.

Mainly the festival of Rakshabandhan is a symbol of the sacred relationship between brothers and sisters. Both take a promise of love and protection towards each other on this day. When sisters tie rakhi to their brothers, they wish for at least one gift from them, which the brothers happily fulfill and make them happy.

Moreover, there is a lot of activity in the markets and houses on this day. During this festival, rakhis and sweets are sold the most because both have their own values.

Earlier rakhis were made of thread or raw yarn, but now there are many varieties of rakhis. In today’s time, the importance of this festival has increased a lot and will remain the same in the future also.

Rakshabandhan par Nibandh

Essay on Raksha Bandhan: Raksha Bandhan is a Hindu festival which celebrates the brother-sister bond of mutual love, care and protection. It is celebrated in the Savan month and marks the arrival of monsoon, usually corresponding with the Gregorian month of August. Traditionally, sister/s ties a “raksha” on the wrist of their brother/s as a token of their love and affection. Brothers on the other hand vow to protect their sisters under any circumstances. After the rituals are over, brother gives gifts to his sister/s to return the gesture. In some communities there is a tradition of brother going to the house of the in-laws of his sister, in case she is married, and escorting her back to her parent’s house to celebrate Raksha Bandhan. The festival of Raksha Bandhan lacks the pomp and show like other Hindu festivals, but, it is a major family event and celebrated with zeal, though privately.

Raksha Bandhan Essay 2 (300 words)

Introduction

Raksha Bandhan is one of the main Hindu festivals. The festival is celebrated with great zeal in various parts of the country. It is known to strengthen the brother-sister bond. It is celebrated by brothers and sisters of all age.

When is Raksha Bandhan Celebrated?

As per the Hindu calendar, Raksha Bandhan falls in Shravan maas also known as the Sawan month. It is celebrated on the last day of the Shravan mass which mostly falls in the month of August. The entire month of Sawan is considered to be auspicious as per the Hindu religion.

How is Raksha Bandhan Celebrated?

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated during the day time. Brothers and sisters adorn beautiful attires to celebrate this pious day. The sisters apply tilak on the brothers’ forehead, tie the rakhi on their wrist and exchange sweets. While carrying out this ritual the sisters pray for the well being of their brothers. The brothers give gifts to their sisters and pledge that they will stand by them and take care of them in every situation. Both brothers and sisters observe fast before tying the rakhi. They eat only after the ritual is carried out.

The ritual is mostly followed by a family brunch. Raksha Bandhan is thus no longer just a day to celebrate the brother-sister bond but also a good occasion to bond with other family members. It is not just celebrated among real brothers and sisters but also among cousins. People mostly gather at their ancestral house where all the cousins and their families can gather and celebrate the day. In today’s busy life when people find it hard to meet their near and dear ones, occasions such as these offer a good chance to bond with them.

Women are especially quite excited about Raksha Bandhan as it is time for them to shop and adorn beautiful dresses and accessories. Men, on the other hand, look forward to meet their sisters and cousins. It is indeed one of the best Hindu festivals.

Raksha Bandhan Essay 3 (400 words)

Raksha Bandhan, one of the main Hindu festivals, is celebrated to strengthen the brother sister bond. On this day, the sisters tie a sacred thread, rakhi on their brothers’ wrist wishing good health and long life for them.

It is a symbol of their love, togetherness and faith in each other.

Raksha Bandhan – A Time for Pampering

Raksha Bandhan is a time for the ladies to pamper themselves. They also receive a lot of love and pampering from their brothers. Since it is time for family gatherings the ladies especially want to look their best. Ethnic clothing is preferred by most as it adds to the fervour of the Hindu festivals. The markets are filled with beautiful kurtis, suits and other ethic wear. Women are seen hoping from shop to shop to buy a piece that matches their taste. They also go on to purchase matching accessories and footwear.

On the day of the festival, girls take a good amount of time dressing up. Besides the dress and accessories, they also go for special hair-dos to look different on this day. Their brothers also pamper them by showering their love and blessings and also by giving gifts.

Raksha Bandhan is known by different names in different parts of the country however the essence of the festival remains the same and that is to celebrate the sacred brother-sister bond.

Raksha Bandhan Essay 4 (500 words)

Raksha Bandhan is celebrated in many parts of India as well as its adjoining countries such as Nepal and Pakistan. It is a festival that symbolizes unity and strength and rejoices the power of familial ties . This one day is particularly dedicated to celebrate the brother sister relationship which is one of the most special relationships in the world. The festival is being celebrated since ancient times.

Raksha Bandhan: Historical References

Several folklores have been presented on how this festival came into being and the significance it held for various famous personalities. Here are some of the historical references of the festival:

  • Alexander the Great

It is said that when Alexamder invaded India, his wife was extremely anxious about his well-being. She sent a sacred thread to Porus, requesting him not to harm Alexander. Keeping with the tradition, Porus refrained from attacking Alexander during the battle. He respected the Rakhi sent by Roxana. This event dates back 326 BCE.

  • Rani Karnavati

The legend of Rani Karnavati and Emperor Humayun also emphasises the significance of this sacred ritual. It is said that Rani Karnavati of Chittor, who was a widowed queen, asked for Emperor Humayun’s help by sending him Rakhi. She did so when she realised that she could not save her kingdom from Bahadur Shah all by herself. Humayun respected the rakhi and sent his troops to fight against all odds and save Chittor.

Choosing the Right Gift for Raksha Bandhan

The market is flooded with a variety of gifts around this time. From clothes to footwear to accessories to home décor items– there is so much variety in each of these that it becomes difficult to pick one among these. The brothers often seem confused on what to gift to their sisters as it is a difficult choice to make. They often roam around the market looking for that perfect gift for their sisters to light a smile on their face. Choosing the right gift is indeed a big task during this festival.

So it is not just the ladies who visit the market and shop endlessly during the time men also invest a good amount of time looking for gifts for their beloved sisters.

Another Festival That Celebrates Brother Sister Bond

Mythological References – Raksha Bandhan

The festival of Raksha Bandhan finds mention in a number of mythological stories. This means that it is being celebrated since the ancient times. The ancient stories related to the festival also point out that it was not just celebrated between real brothers and sisters or cousins. Here are some mythological references of this pious festival:
