School Pride - Decorate all out in your school colors to get some school pride going, especially if your dance is after or before a big game! You can have the cheerleaders lead chants and show off your spirit. Play the school fight song and ask trivia about your school for a chance at door prizes. I Sea, You Sea - An oceanic theme is easy and exciting! Hang blue gauze everywhere and blow up balloons to look like large pieces of coral. For snacks, you can serve blue punch, goldfish or Swedish fish. Play ocean-themed games where students can win a pet goldfish to take home (make sure to clear it with parents first). Our Sadie Hawkins (girls ask guys) dance is always a blast. With a different theme each year, students dress up with their dates and/or friends and dance the night away. Recent themes include Kosmic Kilter, Quest Kilter, and Koncert Kilter, giving students the chance to showcase their creative costumes.

It\u2019s a measure of his ongoing influence that five of those pupils chose Kurt Vonnegut, the novelist responsible for, amongst other highly-respected books, Slaughterhouse-Five; sadly, however, he never made that trip. Instead, he wrote this wonderful letter. He was the only author to reply.

It is because of these reasons that I have chosen to incorporate music and dance into every PE program here at MCS. The elders are so happy to hear fun music and move their bodies! I have found that they learn steps and rhythms extremely quickly. By the time the children get to Lower Elementary, Upper Elementary, and then to the Adolescent Community, although their taste in music might change, they are still incredibly happy to move their feet. Also, their repertoire of dance numbers is quite amazing! Some children chose to create their own dances, and this is always a joy to watch. My hope is that all of our children and young adults never lose their desire to play music and just dance!

Dance Competition Planning: Find a Theme that Shines

Your studio’s chosen dance competition theme offers two main benefits. First, it can make your dancers’ performance — and, by extension, your studio — more memorable. Second, it can make decisions easier by limiting your possibilities. And with all the choices necessarily part of competition season, you’ll be glad for that more limited selection.

The Dark Side of Inspirational Tales

As you consider a general theme — perhaps originating in a fairy tale or some other story — consider alternative perspectives and consider switching up the main character. Choosing to make a villain the central character — or at least to give her a more significant role — can help you put a new spin on a traditional theme. By allowing your choreography to reflect the darker side of the story instead of just the main parts, your piece will create a depth that defies descriptions like “overdone” or “tired.”

The Benefit of Theme Mash-Ups

No one wants a dance competition theme that’s seen as unoriginal or overdone; at the same time, though, trendy themes can seem risky. Why not let the two combine in a creative mash-up? Listen to some musical mash-ups for inspiration and consider how a traditional fairy tale might be combined with a pop culture icon or current movie trend. Princess apocalypse, anyone?

The Significance of Fabric Choices

You don’t have to go with costume design that’s completely innovative in order to exhibit today’s trends. In fact, a major trend for this year’s dance costumes is all about mixing two types of fabric: mesh and velvet. The great news is that this fabric combination can combine with just about any costume design! Leotards are making a major comeback this year, too, and they work well with understated designs. The main aim is to allow texture and geometric patterns combine with bright contrasts for attention-getting costumes.

The Place of Setting in Your Theme

In addition to a different perspective or a theme mash-up, one way to give a time-honored theme new life is to alter the setting. First, you can do this in an unusual time theme. Consider a fairy tale princess at home in the last century but then scurrying through various decades with music to suit each section. Feel free to play around with location settings, too: instead of New York, consider San Francisco or Chicago for an urban theme or instead of Paris, choose Venice or even Rome.

The Mastery of Music

As important as the theme itself, setting, and costumes may be, could anything be as significant as the music that you choose? After all, nothing informs the choreography of your competition piece like the music does. And if your musical selections don’t coordinate well with your other thematic elements, the effect can seem confusing or even ludicrous. So start with the music. Select a song and build a theme around it. Jot down the feelings and colors that come to mind when you hear it, and then consider other songs that elicit similar ideas.

By unifying your dance competition choices around a central theme, you’ll give your dancers an added edge, setting them apart from the competition.

For primary school teachers without a dance background, navigating the world of dance instruction may seem daunting. Fear not! In this blog post, we’ll help you deliver dance lessons with confidence and fun - and get results.

Dance is an important part of the physical education curriculum. It is a creative activity that helps pupils develop coordination, flexibility, strength and spatial awareness while learning to work together in groups too. Dance can also encourage social interaction and provide a positive outlet for emotions.

With the benefits of Dance being so huge, it is important to teach it throughout the Primary School Years.

For primary school teachers without a dance background, navigating the world of dance instruction may seem daunting. Fear not! In this blog post, we’ll help you deliver dance lessons with confidence and fun – and get results.

Why Teach Dance?

Dance is one of the few activities that is a compulsory component of the PE curriculum, and is in fact compulsory right through to Key Stage 3. It is unique amongst PE activities in that it combines artistic practice with physical activity.

The Arts Council (the national development agency for creativity and culture), says:

“High quality dance also promotes whole school improvement through influencing the culture of the school, raising aspiration and enhancing the profile of the school in its community.”

Teaching dance at primary school level provides countless opportunities for physical exercise, growth and development. Below are our top benefits to dance…

Holistic Development: Dance engages children both physically and mentally. It encourages the integration of movement, coordination, creativity and emotional expression, contributing to overall development.

Getting started with teaching dance: Understanding your pupils

To be able to teach dance, you do not need the physical skills of a dancer. Delivering dance lessons to primary school pupils is about developing their skills in coordination, control and expression – in a way they enjoy!

As we say in this blog post about teaching dance , delivering a dance unit should be like a story in a book – with a beginning, middle and end. This helps keep children engaged as each ‘chapter’ is a logical next step. But additionally, it’s a great way to plan out your unit through the term. More on this later!

Before diving in, take the time to understand the needs of the class – as well as their energy levels. You can broadly fit most classes into two camps: those with confidence who are eager to get involved, and those that shy away from dance lesson activities. You need to make sure your dance classes appeal to both as best as possible! What is the most appropriate style to teach the pupils in your class… And how can those with confidence and enthusiasm encourage the rest of the class to enjoy the experience? Can you pair confident pupils up with less-confident ones, to support them?

Set learning objectives

What do you want your children to achieve? Define clear and achievable learning objectives for your dance unit. Whether it’s introducing basic dance steps, improving coordination, or fostering creativity, having specific goals will guide your lesson planning and keep the unit focused.

Some of the objectives you may have are:

Develop basic movement skills: Demonstrate basic dance moves, along with coordination and body awareness.

Establish rhythm and timing: Have children moving in time to a dance beat.

Encourage expressive movement: Develop childrens’ understanding of expression through dance movement.

Develop spatial awareness: Develop spatial awareness by maintaining appropriate distance from others during dance activities.

Build cultural awareness: Explore, and allow children to appreciate, dances from different cultures and demonstrate an understanding of their significance.

Improve physical fitness: Improve physical fitness through dance activities, including showing children the importance of warming-up and cooling-down.

Your first dance lessons: Starting with the basics

Begin your dance unit by introducing fundamental movements and concepts. Cover basic steps, body awareness, and spatial awareness. Building a strong foundation will help children feel more confident and comfortable as they progress.

Again, think about your dance unit following a story, with a beginning, middle and end. Break up the dance units into chapters – a different dance phrase for each chapter. Make sure you always include warm-ups and cool-downs 

Engage children from the start with fun and interactive warm-up activities. Use music, games, and dynamic exercises to get their bodies warmed up and their energy levels high. 

A positive and enthusiastic start sets the tone for an enjoyable dance experience!

Some great examples of fun warm-ups are:

Follow the leader: Have the children stand in a line, with a designated leader. The leader performs a series of simple dance movements (e.g., marches, skips, or sways), and the rest of the children must mimic the leader’s actions. Add music to this warm up to encourage creativity and moving to the beat.

Freeze dance: Play lively music and have the children dance freely around the space. Periodically pause the music: children must then freeze on the spot until you press ‘Play’ again!

Hula hooping: Provide each child with a hula hoop, and have them spin the hula hoop around different body parts, such as waist, arms, and legs while incorporating dance moves such as swaying, stepping, or clapping!

Introduce creativity at every opportunity

Corporating activities that allow children to express themselves through movement. Encourage them to create their own dance steps or develop simple choreography. This not only enhances their creativity, but also encourages ownership in their learning!

Enhance your dance unit with the use of props and visual aids. Scarves, ribbons, or even simple drawings on the floor can add a visual and tactile element to your lessons, making the learning experience more engaging for young minds.

Provide positive feedback

Encourage a positive learning environment by offering constructive and positive feedback. 

Recognise effort, improvement and creativity. Positive reinforcement will boost confidence, and will motivate children to actively participate!

Conclude your dance unit with a showcase

Remember we said that your dance unit should have a beginning, middle and end? The end, your conclusion to the dance unit, should be a showcase!

This could be a simple presentation for classmates, parents, or even a full performance. This allows children to celebrate their achievements and showcase their newfound dance skills.

This exciting conclusion will also help to instill confidence in your children, that will hopefully remain long after your dance unit has finished.

To be able to teach dance, you do not need the physical skills of a dancer. Delivering dance lessons to primary school pupils is about developing their skills in coordination, control and expression - in a way they enjoy!

As we say in this blog post about teaching dance , delivering a dance unit should be like a story in a book - with a beginning, middle and end. This helps keep children engaged as each ‘chapter’ is a logical next step. But additionally, it’s a great way to plan out your unit through the term. More on this later!

Before diving in, take the time to understand the needs of the class - as well as their energy levels. You can broadly fit most classes into two camps: those with confidence who are eager to get involved, and those that shy away from dance lesson activities. You need to make sure your dance classes appeal to both as best as possible! What is the most appropriate style to teach the pupils in your class… And how can those with confidence and enthusiasm encourage the rest of the class to enjoy the experience? Can you pair confident pupils up with less-confident ones, to support them?

What do you want your children to achieve? Define clear and achievable learning objectives for your dance unit. Whether it's introducing basic dance steps, improving coordination, or fostering creativity, having specific goals will guide your lesson planning and keep the unit focused.

Again, think about your dance unit following a story, with a beginning, middle and end. Break up the dance units into chapters - a different dance phrase for each chapter. Follow the leader: Have the children stand in a line, with a designated leader. The leader performs a series of simple dance movements (e.g., marches, skips, or sways), and the rest of the children must mimic the leader's actions. Add music to this warm up to encourage creativity and moving to the beat.

Warmups and Icebreaker Activities for the Primary Dance Classroom

Fast and fun dance education activities are always good to have on hand for those moments when energy is lagging or to get the energy going in the dance classroom after the holidays.  Warm up activities also help introduce dance curriculum vocabulary and allow teachers to check for students’ understanding.   These are a few that are appropriate for different age groups in Primary or Elementary school dance classrooms.

Dance Ideas for Warm ups

Snowball attack is a fun dance activity for the older Primary students.  It leads them into making dance in a fun and supported way. On a small piece of paper have them write down a movement description of 8 counts.  This can be as simple as “move your arms above your head” or more complex; “moving sideways wiggle your body and your arms”.  Then screw up the paper into a ball and throw them at each other across the room.  Repeat several times to really mix up the paper.

At the end of this each person has a piece of paper with movement instructions, which they must do, and be able to perform to music.  As they work out their movements they try and guess whose movement instructions they have.

An extension activity is then to teach your movement to a partner and join the phrases together.   Adapt further by adding a body connection, with at least two body parts, with your partner, at some point through the phrase.  The teacher can choose music for the exploration and showing phase of this activity.

Art gallery and sculpture garden is a pairs activity that is great for any age group.  In pairs, one student ‘shapes’ their partners body into a sculptural shape, that may be viewed from any direction.  Once the ‘artist’ has finished the class gets to visit the art gallery and discuss the ‘sculptures’. They then reverse roles and repeat the process.

This is a great opportunity to talk about curved and angular shapes, symmetry and asymmetry, positive and negative space, levels and use of body parts.  The teacher can also give the ‘artist’ some parameters for their creations by asking that it be a low level, curved shape that is asymmetrical.  This is a chance for the teacher to check for student understand about these dance terms.

Meet me in the middle can be as simple or as complex as your class can handle. Form two lines on either side of the room, meet a partner in the middle and return to a different place in the line on the other side. The teacher gives instructions for how you will move when you meet in the middle.  For example, “Join two body parts that aren’t your hands or your feet and move in a curved pathway to the end of the line”.  

Use the elements of dance to bring in vocabulary for the lesson and make it more involved or faster as the game goes on.  You can even instruct students on how to move into the middle by describing the pathways, levels and dynamics that they will use with their locomotor movement.  Adding music helps them get even more creative but start by just doing it in silence.

Red Light Green Light is a simple, high energy, dance activity for younger students and older ones as well.  The music tells you what to do if you want to keep it simple but if you have older students you might want to use the elements of dance. To give students some scaffolding, describe the kinds of shapes you want on the ‘red light’ movement.  For example, ‘low level angular shapes’ or ‘wide, high level shapes’.  This is the link to the music  

Pass the parcel takes a bit of preparation but is a great way to engage the class particularly at the start of the year.  Each layer of the parcel contains movements which they unwrap when the music stops.  These movement may be done solo or with a partner.  Music that is current and up tempo is best to bring up the energy in the room.

It is good to have the students in a circle or, if this is too confronting, spread them around the room and have the parcel go in curved pathways from one child to the next.  You can change between curved and angular pathways to keep them alert and add in some dance vocabulary.  Make sure the movements you put in the parcel include language you may want to use in the body of the dance lesson.

These activities are not original and are often reminiscent of party games we used to play as children.  By putting a small twist on each one you can shape them introduce the language of dance elements, check for understanding and cover the curriculum requirements for dance.
