6 Tips For Coaches On How To Write A Speech For The Team

Hrideep barot.

  • Speech Writing

a football coach talking to his team

One of the most important roles of a coach is to ensure that their team is motivated to give their best at all times.

There are several techniques like everyday team affirmations and regular positive feedback, that can help inspire your team.

But when it comes to certain occasions that are an important milestone for a team, nothing can pump up the team players like an encouraging speech given by the coach. An encouraging speech or a pep-talk before the game is a very powerful instrument having an immediate effect.

A few tips for coaches to write a speech for the team include having a clear purpose, stepping in the team’s shoes, sharing stories and being vulnerable, writing how you talk, being persuasive, and concluding well.

Before we elaborate on these tips, let us see the instances wherein a coach is required to give a speech for the team.

When is it Time for a Speech by the Coach?

It doesn’t make sense to give a motivational speech to your team before every practice session. Here is how you can gauge if it is time to give an encouraging speech for your team:

Your Team is About to Play an Important Game

a woman holding a calendar with the month of January on the cover page.

We’ve seen numerous scenes of locker room talks by coaches in movies; and this is one thing they all have in common- persuasion and belief . As a coach, you need to persuade your team to give their best for this game while showcasing your immense belief in them.

Your Team has Won a Game

two young footballers running and celebrating victory.

This situation requires a speech that shows your appreciation towards your team as a coach. You can express gratitude and point out that your team’s efforts are valued. Also, make it a point to highlight the moments that made you admire individual team members’ abilities.

Your Team has Lost a Game

Football players wearing black jerseys sitting together on the field. One player covering his face with his hands indicating loss.

In this scenario, your words must be reassuring. Empathize with your team and exhibit your appreciation for the game they played. Draw in from your own experience by including personal narratives.

Your Team is Training Hard for an Upcoming Game but is Stressed out and Tired.

a tired tennis player resting on the ground.

This is when your team is tired and doesn’t see the point in continuing their game anymore. Your speech as a coach at this time must show your team why their work is of value and what it does for others. Emphasize how the big goals they have for themselves can only be achieved by overcoming small, everyday training challenges.

How to Write an Encouraging Speech?

a person seated at a desk, writing something in a notebook in a dark room.

In extensive research carried out by Tiffanye Vargas , professor of sports psychology at California State University, on the types of speeches that best motivate athletes,  it was observed that across many sports, the pre-game remarks or speeches/pep talks given by the coach, matter to a  remarkable extent.

90% of players like listening to the pep talks given by their coaches and 65% believe these talks influence the way they play .

Hence, it becomes all the more important for a coach to have the right words that encourage their team members.

To help you write an encouraging speech, we will use the findings of The Mayfields – namely, Jacqueline and Milton Mayfield, a husband-and-wife team at Texas A&M International University who have researched extensively on the Motivating Language Theory . In simpler terms, encouraging speech.

These findings, backed by studies done by sports psychologists and military historians, suggest that most successful encouraging speeches include three fundamental elements: direction giving, expressions of empathy, and meaning-making.

Here are ways to employ these three elements to write an encouraging speech for your team:

1. Direction Giving

a person drawing an outline on a blank page.

This refers to the use of “uncertainty-reducing language’’ . For example, when you as a coach, inform your team precisely how to carry out the game strategy by providing them with clear-cut and comprehensible instructions.

This also includes giving your team an information-rich speech with tips like, “We’re going to defeat them with tough man-to-man coverage. Steve, your job is to…; Tylor, you are going to…”

2. Expressions of Empathy

a pair of glasses suggesting viewing the world through another person's perspective.

Show that you are concerned about a player for who they are as a human. In your talk, use “ empathetic language ” which includes praise, appreciation, encouragement, and acknowledges the difficulty of a particular task.

You can also utilize phrases like “I know this is a task, but I fully believe you can do it” or “How is everyone feeling?” and so on.

3. Meaning-making Language

This term explains why a task/game is important. Here, the coach is required to link the organization or team’s mission/ purpose to the goals of his listeners, i.e., the team.

This can be achieved by incorporating stories – about athletes who have found success, or how the particular sport has played a role in making a difference in the lives of the players, their families, or the community.

Revolve your speech around these three key elements and you will soon see how much of an impact your words can make. This is because these encouraging speeches are memorable, structured, straightforward, and real.

Ensure to also balance out these three elements according to the situation and needs of your listeners. For instance, if you are to give a motivational or encouraging speech after your team has lost a match, you may want to use more expressions of empathy than meaning-making language.

6 Tips For Coaches To Write A Speech For The Team

Be it a persuasive speech you have to deliver to pump up your players before a game or be it a speech to celebrate your victory, these are tips that come to your rescue to make your speech truly inspiring.

1. Have A Clear Purpose

a white paper with a pencil and an eraser kept on it and a question mark drawn, suggesting an idea.

You must’ve come across speakers who map out the whole world before listing out their central point. But it is rare to come across a coach in a locker room speech going on minutely describing his life experiences minutes before his team is out on the field.

This is because, the coach has already jotted down the essential thing they are going to be talking about, way before they entered that room.

Having a clear purpose for your talk is essential for two reasons. One, to narrow down and emphasize that one thing you want your team to focus on. And two, to motivate your team in not more than the 2-10 minutes you get before your team is out on the field.

Be clear about the message you want to deliver. Keep in mind that clarity is key and less is more when it comes to giving a speech as a coach. To zero down on a central theme, you can take the example of the thesis statement of an essay.

This is a single sentence that covers what the essay is going to cover. By doing this, you can point back to your central idea/ message every time to reinforce it in your team’s mind.

2. Write How You Talk

a football coach giving a pep-talk to his team.

It’s true that written and spoken language are different . This is what you must keep in mind while writing your speech. Avoid using cliche statements like ‘nothing is impossible’ or impressing with complex words. When it comes to jargon, you as a coach, know the language your team uses, so fill words in accordingly.

Try using short, clear sentences instead of crowding in too many ideas in a complex, long sentence. Understand that your team already has a lot going on in their head, and hence you must make your speech as easy to listen to and understand as possible.

Active voice should be your go-to if you want to sound persuasive and engage your team members to actively listen. It is always easier to make sense of sentences written in the active voice.

An example of active voice would be “In these 70 minutes, you have to make an effort to play the best game of your life.” Versus an example of passive voice, “An effort has to be made by you to play the best game of your life in these 70 minutes.”

3. Step In Your Team’s Shoes

Leadership is about empathy. It is about having the ability to relate and to connect with people. Jayson M. Boyers (former chief speechwriter for Vice President Al Gore)

As a coach, you have to make empathy a part of your diet. Empathy refers to the ability to sense the emotions of others and to imagine what they might be feeling or thinking. It is especially important to sound empathetic while writing and delivering a speech for your team.

You must realize that while writing a speech for your team that is aimed at motivating or inspiring them, it should be anything but self-focused. As a coach, you are the driving force responsible for pushing your team to some action.

While writing, keep your team at the center of your mind . Include your stories, your experiences, but only in a way that they benefit from it. Ask yourself questions like –

Will my team relate to my narrative?

Am I looking at things from their perspective and suggesting solutions that are fitting?

Is the tone of my writing supporting the meaning behind the words?

4. Be Vulnerable – Share Stories

a coach tying his team member's shoelaces.

As a coach, you spend a lot of your time training with your team. Letting your guard down helps build a connection with your team, hence use this instrument while writing your speech.

One of the best ways to do this is by storytelling. As humans, we are wired to learn through storytelling . Take a look at the types of stories you can use in your speech:

Historical Stories

Find a story from history that links to the theme of your speech. It can be from a religious book, a fable, a historical event, etc. You will almost always find a story that matches your topic.

However, one disadvantage is that it might not be as personal as your other options and while your audience may relate to the story, they may not necessarily relate to you.

Professional Stories

In your coaching career or as a sports enthusiast, you might’ve definitely come across inspiring stories about athletes. Use these when you are writing a speech for your team since they are especially effective when you aim at motivating your team members.

Draw parallels between the story and your team –  their situation, how they overcame hurdles, etc, and emphasize what lessons can be learned.

Personal Stories

Allowing yourself to be vulnerable with the team will benefit you by earning the trust of the team members as well. Sharing stories from your personal life and experiences is one of the most powerful tools to connect with your team.

Keep in mind the context and make sure your story adds some meaning to your larger theme.

Boundary Crossing

In his book, A Whole New Mind , Daniel Pink argues that boundary c rossing is one of the most essential skills that will be helpful for future leaders. A coach who is a “boundary crosser”, is a person who can “cross-apply what one learns in one field of study, to another apparently unrelated field.” (Pink 2005).

Pink gives us an example of this:

“The same way personal trainers gradually increase the difficulty of each workout, to condition a clients muscles and tendons, we should do the same when preparing for our speeches. Starting out in front of smaller and friendlier audiences helps us prepare and improve our speaking skills to handle more difficult and larger groups.”

5. Use Persuasion

woodblocks with the words "BE THE CHANGE" written on them.

A lot of coaches incorporate persuasion in their speeches which attempts to have an influence on the listener’s attitudes, thoughts, beliefs, and behavior.

Three Types of Persuasion to Use in your Team Speech:

A compelling speech should strike a balance between analytical/information-rich content and emotional content. Persuasive speech helps take care of the latter.

According to Aristotle , the famed Greek philosopher, a speaker must use three types of arguments- ethical appeal(Ethos), logical appeal(Logos), and emotional appeal(Pathos).

Learn how you can use these elements to make your speech persuasive:

Ethical Persuasion

You can share the values you hold as a coach, your goals, and your experiences to help increase credibility with your team. Shed light on the common values and beliefs you and your team share to make them feel connected to you.

Logical Persuasion

This requires you to share the central purpose or theme of your speech in a compelling way and support it with a structure that logically supports your message. Basically, giving evidence to prove the ‘’thesis statement’’ of your speech.

Emotional Appeal

This is where you can appeal to your team members’ emotions by sharing stories that evoke pain or pleasure . The emotional connection gained from this is important to persuade.

6. End on a High Note

a girl holding a clapperboard signifying action.

Being a coach, your words have an immense impact on your team. All the points in your speech should lead to a point of climax where your team has imbibed whatever you have been speaking about and is pumped up to face the next thing at hand – be it a game, another round of training, or going back home.

A pep talk for an upcoming game will require you to have a strong call-to-action , to sum up the essence of your speech, and tell your team what their next step ought to be.

Give them room to ponder over what you just said by ending with an intriguing question, a positive affirmation, or a rhetorical question .

To know more about ending with a bang, we have written an article that gives you 5 ways to end your speech with maximum impact.

How do you Start and End a Coach Speech?

Top 3 ways to open a coach speech.

participants lined on their mark on a racetrack before starting the race.

There’s no one way to start a speech. And when it comes to a speech given by a coach, the way you start depends on many things. Like the situation, the atmosphere in your locker room, the event your team is at, and so on.

But there are some sure-shot ways that will help you start well and ensure that your speech leaves an impression on your team. Here they are:

1. Share an Unpopular Opinion

Being a coach, you definitely know your team. Time spent training with your team may have exposed you to their beliefs, opinions, preconceived notions on certain things, etc. Hence, you will have a fair idea of what they are expecting to hear from you before you give your speech. Your job as a coach is to strip their expectations by challenging this expectation in your opening statement.

After you’ve shared your unpopular opinion, the next step is to follow it with the reasoning behind your opinion which leads to the central idea of your speech.

For instance, ‘I am beyond relieved that you all did not do well in the first half of the game. Because.. “

2. Prop it Up

Walking in the locker room with a prop will automatically direct your team’s attention towards you. Why? Because for us humans, we first see and then hear! Remember your eyes being reflexively directed to the most random movement happening in a room while listening to a speech?

When you bring in a prop, you create curiosity and intrigue the team. Here, it is important to choose a prop that best suits an idea or the theme of your speech. Give a remark that connects this prop to the message you are trying to convey.

For example, you could bring in a trophy of a previous game that your team won and connect it to your speech’s idea of playing your best game.

3. Factually Speaking

Start with a fact that is not generic. It could be a bit surprising and shocking to catch the attention of your team. Avoid using technical language, make it as simple as possible. After presenting the fact, pause and then lead your team to the reasons why the fact is relevant to them.

One example of using a fact to start your speech would be this:

Fact: Football players run an average of 9.65 kilometers during a game.

Before going to sleep tonight, each one of you would have run about 9.65 kilometers today. I am here to tell you to make each foot, each meter, each kilometer of those 9.65 kilometers count.

Top 3 Ways to Close a Coach Speech

a person waving a finish flag marking the end of a race.

1. Pose a Question

The benefit of concluding your speech with a question is that your message will remain in your team’s mind for a good amount of time. This gives them an opportunity to contemplate the actions that they need to undertake. It will also make them think over the things you said in your speech and prompt discussion among your team players.

The way to do this is by asking a rhetorical question, that gives your team something to think about. The question should also relate to the theme of your speech and not an extra topping.

Here’s how Al Pacino did it when he played coach Tony D’Amato in the movie Any Given Sunday :

“Now I think you going to see a guy who will go that inch with you. You are gonna see a guy who will sacrifice himself for this team because he knows when it comes down to it your gonna do the same for him. That’s a team, gentlemen, and either, we heal, now, as a team, or we will die as individuals. That’s football guys, that’s all it is. Now, what are you gonna do? “

2. Reflective Remark

Like a question, a contemplative remark also aims at encouraging your listener to ponder upon the central message of your speech. It is that one thing that stays in their mind throughout the game. To do this, you need to arrange the remark around the main idea of your speech. Don’t focus on making it sound good, rather focus on the matter it holds.

This is how Matthew McConaughey’s character, Jack Lengyel inspired his team with this contemplative speech ending,

“How you play today, from this moment on, is how you will be remembered. This is your opportunity to rise from these ashes and grab glory. We are…Marshall!”

3. Call-to-Action

If you want your speech as a coach to alter your team’s beliefs in a way that motivates them to take action in a particular way, then resort to the very well-known tool: call-to-action.

A call-to-action gives your listeners a detailed set of directions to follow after you are done giving your pep talk. A good call-to-action is simple, specific, and has a sense of urgency. It provides your team with a roadmap of the steps they are to follow in the future.

This is an example of one,

“ Here’s what we are going to do. We are going to..” or “So don’t you forget to…”

Examples of Great Coach Speeches to take Inspiration from

1.central connecticut blue devils football team.

The coach of this football team starts his pep-talk before the match with an analogy. He asks a team member to break a pencil and then, a bunch of pencils. Suggesting the value of teamwork.

The coach also incorporates humor by pointing out the skills of individual team members by saying:

Look at Freddy, he’s the Ferrari of our team. Hosey is our pickup truck , he’s going to pick up every ball tonight)

He further also points to previous winners of championships and urges his current team to visualize them in that position.

2. Leland Challengers

Coach Johnathan Flowers starts by comparing the football field to a battlefield and teaches his team members the refrain – I Am A Champion by asking them the question – Who am I? several times in his speech. The aggression with which the coach and the team members proclaim these affirmations helps create a great sense of confidence.

The coach gives his speech as a sort of a vow, pledging what a team member should be like on the field. For instance, he says,

Coach: No matter how bad things go, my heart and my mind will carry my body when my limbs are too weak. Who am I?

Team: I am a champion!

This speech highlights the power of repetition; by repeating the affirmation “I am a champion.” the coach reinforces this belief, this statement in the mind of his team. Here’s a complete guide to use repetition in speeches.

3. Sachem East Football Team

In this locker room talk, Coach Jimmy Dee delivers another great motivational speech to his team before their revenge playoff game against an opponent they previously lost to.

Coach Jimmy uses a lot of persuasive language, coupled with a dramatic tone of voice. Emphasizing the “48 minutes” that his team has and urging them to make the best of that time. He asks questions like “Who are we?” to which the team responds ‘Sachem’ to invigorate their team spirit.

He also reminds his team of a similar situation they encountered in the past and emerged victorious from. This helps greatly to strengthen the belief of the team.

4. Indian Hill Braves High School Football Team

This pre-game speech given by Coach Tony Arcuri in 2007, used a story from the Bible, namely, the story of David, who was chosen among his 8 brothers by God for his heart.

He drew parallels from a biblical story (crossing boundaries,  as we learned above) teaching his team, to “be the intangible’’ like David.

They also ended with a prayer that has been going on in their football club which goes like this:

Lord, I am only one, but I am one, I cannot do everything, but I can do something, and that, which I’m about to do tonight, with your help, I will do, THANK GOD I PLAY FOR INDIAN HILL!

Sample Speech

One year of training. Three months of rigorous exercise. One month of being away from your families. All for the next 90 minutes. How are you going to make it worth the while? I’ll tell you how. In those 90 minutes on the field, you are going to play the best game of football you have ever played in your life. Think about the first time you discovered your love for this sport. Think about the time you scored for your team. Do this for the love you have for this game, for your team right here. This is why you are here. To give your best. To be your best. Being perfect doesn’t matter here. Don’t aim to be the perfect footballer, aim to be the best footballer out there.  We have come a long way. I know you have doubts about this game like you have before every other game. But remember this, if you’ve made it this far, you are not going home, unless and until you have given your best performance out there. Until you are empty until you have nothing else left to offer. I have always been, and always will be proud of each one of you. We all know if I had enough money, I would bring all eleven of you home. Because I have seen the men in this team for who they really are. I have seen you working long hours to get techniques right. I have seen you put time with your family on hold to not miss a single day of training. I have seen you support each other as a family when Todd lost his brother. As your coach, I see you, I see the value you bring to this team.  You’ve played one of the best games this field ever witnessed last fall. You’ve come cheering in this locker room after the match. You have made your families, yourselves and so many others proud by doing what you love. And so, I am not going to say anything else to you all. You have done this before, and you are going to do it again. And while you’re at it, make every second of those 90 minutes count.

In Conclusion

To be able to inspire someone to achieve something is rightly one of the most rewarding aspects of being a coach.

A coach always strives to improve and inspire their team. The tips we’ve elaborated on in the sections above can be used to improve your speaking skills as a coach so that you find the right words for your team, at the right time.

How to Give a Speech Before a Championship Game

No matter what your sport or activity, a championship game can be an emotionally charged experience for participants. Some may feel excited and energized, while others may be anxious and nervous. [1] X Research source It's important that players feel both relaxed and prepared before the game begins. A good pre-game speech should adequately prepare players for what they are about to experience and give them the motivation they need to achieve victory.

Preparing the Content of Your Speech

Step 1 Prepare your speech in advance.

  • To pose a rhetorical question, you might say, “Are you ready to push yourself harder than you ever have before?”
  • To use a powerful quote, you could say, “A man named Ferdinand Foch once said, ‘The will to conquer is the first condition of victory.’”
  • An brief story might look like this: “Rudy Ruettiger was a kid who no one gave a chance at anything in his life. He fought for everything he got. Because he never gave up, he achieved his dream of playing football for Notre Dame and helped lead his team to victory.”

Step 4 Only include up to 3 points of strategic or instructional information in your speech.

  • For example, you could focus on a technique from practice by saying, “Remember to drop your shoulder before you swing.”
  • To point out key elements of the opponent's strategy, you might say, “This team favors their running game over their passing game. Keep an eye on the running backs.”

Step 5 Build players’ self-confidence.

  • Don’t dwell on negative faults like this: “You’re too heavy on your feet when you put your weight in your heels. Don’t do that on the field.”
  • Instead, use positive language to remind players of good form: “Stay on your toes, like we’ve been doing in practice. Remember how quickly you can pivot when you’re on your toes.”

Step 6 Close with a call to action.

  • “Now let’s go out there and bring home this trophy!”
  • “Show them that you’re the team to beat!”

Adding Emotional Impact

Step 1 Use words that are clear and direct.

  • Other ideas for props include bringing in a sledgehammer to smash the competition, a lasso to pull the team together, or glasses with blinders to focus attention on the competitor facing them.

Step 5 Use call-and-response moments to actively involve players in your speech.

  • Ask questions with obvious answers: “Who are we going to beat today?” or “How bad do you want this championship title?”
  • Give players the appropriate response by setting up a call and response: “When I say ‘go,’ you say ‘win’! Go!” And they respond, “Win!” Repeat the same call and response several times to build momentum and excitement.

Step 6 Practice your speech several times before the championship game.

Developing a Dynamic Delivery for Your Speech

Step 1 Make eye contact with the players as you deliver your speech.

Expert Q&A

  • Practice your speech until you are comfortable reciting it with passion and without looking at your notes. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
  • Stay positive in your language and in your demeanor. Keep your head up and look your players in the eyes while you’re delivering your speech. Smile when appropriate. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0
  • Believe that the players can win the championship game. If you don’t honestly believe they are going to win, the players are going to be able to tell you don’t have faith in them. Thanks Helpful 0 Not Helpful 0

8 Inspirational Football Locker Room Speeches

8 Inspirational Football Locker Room Speeches

February 04, 2016

The college football season starts on Saturday (okay, technically Thursday. But I’m saying Saturday because that’s when Oklahoma plays. Boomer Sooner!). I love football. It’s one of the manliest sports. For it is truly the sport closest to combat. Men strategize in their war room, don their armor, and line up against their opponent. Victory is measured in territory gained, in how well one unit outmaneuvers the other. The game involves brute strength and keen physicality; it is a hand to hand, helmet to helmet fight, one man struggling against another. And yet at the same time, finesse, agility, and brilliant strategy are requisites for success and a team lives or dies solely on how well they work together as a team, as a unit.

Playing football in high school helped shape me into the man I am today. As I struggled through another practice in 100 degree heat and sweated through two-a-day practices, I learned to work hard and not quit. I learned that pain is often the only pathway to excellence. At the end of the game, when the scoreboard’s numbers were not as I had wished, I learned how to bounce back from failure and dedicate myself to being better the next time around. I experienced the awesome power of a group of men, striving together for the same goal. The   friendships  I made while playing football will last a lifetime.

The lessons of all sports carry over from the actual arena to the playing field of life. Rich is the man who, if only for a short time, feels the glory his body in peak condition, the bond of brothers, the sweet joy of victory and the agony of defeat. While the memories of such a time fade as a man grows older, the wisdom he gleans from the experience will echo throughout his life.

So in honor of the opening of the football season, and the great lessons all men can learn from this great game,  we’ve compiled a list of some of the most inspiring football locker room speeches from both film and real life.  The speeches we chose are not only inspiring for men about to hit the field, they’re motivating for those men who wish to walk out the door each day to school or work, ready to take on the world. Success in football requires heart, pride, and teamwork. Success in life requires the same.

Friday Night Lights

If you played football in high school, you can’t help but think about the young men you played next to while watching this clip. Coach Gary Gaines (Billy Bob Thornton) explains to his players what “being perfect” really means. It’s not about the score at the end of the game. It’s about looking your teammate in the eye and being able to say you did all you could. I can’t help but get a little   teary eyed  when the players say the Lord’s Prayer. My team in high school did the same thing and it instantly transports me back to that locker room in Edmond, OK.

I Am a Champion

Through a series of manly affirmations, this coach pumps the hell out of his players. How can you not get psyched to take down the competition with lines like these:

“I will rip the heart out of my enemy and leave it bleeding on the ground because he cannot stop me.”

The bagpipes in the background of this speech only up the manly vigor quotient

Any Given Sunday

Warning: Some adult language

Life, like football, is a game of inches. Coach Tony D’Amato (Al Pacino) captures that analogy perfectly in this speech. An inch can make the difference between victory or defeat. And if you want to succeed in football or life, you have to fight for every inch. Never take anything for granted. Always keep fighting, even when everything seems stacked against you.

Knute Rockne

We’re big fans of   Knute Rockne.  And how can you not be? As a player he revolutionized the game with the forward pass and as a coach he became almost unstoppable. This is an actual clip from Knute Rockne’s famous “Inside ’em and Outside ’em” speech. In this locker room pep talk, Knute rouses his players with his machine gun delivery and excited gestures. The speech was so popular back in the day that young men bought recordings of it by the thousands and listened to it over and over, getting pumped to charge onto the playing field of life.

Remember the Titans

Okay, so technically this isn’t a locker room speech, but it’s still inspiring. It’s 1971, and Coach Herman Boone (Denzel Washington) has the onerous task of bringing together a team of black and white high school students in Virginia. The team isn’t gelling. So, in a stroke of pure rhetorical genius, Coach Boone takes his men on a jog to Gettysburg. In a stirring and solemn bit of oratory, he teaches his men a little about football, and a lot about life.

What would you do if you knew that this day would be your last day? How would you live? If you’re like me, you’d go balls out to make it the best damn day of your life. This coach revs his players up telling them to to play each play as if it was their final one on the field. We can all take a cue from this. Approach what you do in life as if it would be the last time you do it. Kiss your wife like it would be the last time. Play with your kids like it would be the last time. You never know. That kiss and playtime could be your last.

Rudy, Fortune The Facilities Manager

Sometimes we need an honest mentor to give us some perspective on ourselves. Rudy (Sean Austin) spent two years trying to get on the dress team of the Notre Dame Fighting Irish. When it didn’t happen, he decides to quit. Thankfully, facilities manager Fortune (Charles S. Dutton) knocks some sense into Rudy and tells him what’s what. Quitting will only bring regret, he tells him. You gotta stay in it, even when things get tough, even when the odds are against you.

Georgia Tech Pre-Game Speech, Derrick Moore, Georgia Tech Chaplin

It’s 2007, and Georgia Tech is in South Bend to take on the Irish in their house. They definitely need to get fired up. Luckily they have this guy, Derrick Moore, to light a fire under ’em. Moore is pure intensity. He’s the team chaplain (who knew that team’s had one?) and brings an evangelical fervor to his oratory. The best part of the speech is when he quotes the words of his middle school teacher:

“We’re going to fight until we can’t fight no more. Going to lie down and bleed awhile. Going to get up; fight some more.”

Amen, brother. That’s how you win. Tenacity.

If you enjoyed the speech, check out player Tashard Choice quoting it before a game in which GA Tech goes on to upset Clemson. It’ll get you pumped.

And now, just for the heck of it, drop the name of the college team you’ll be cheering on this season in the comments. Show your team pride!

⚽ Best Soccer Persuasive Speech Topics

The game of soccer offers some good topics for motivational sporting speeches. Just see for yourself:

  • Goal-line technology and some other innovations have added fairness to soccer. Which state-of-art technologies could make the game even more spectacular? Or do you support the conservative approach? Is the human eye enough to control the results?
  • Is it reasonable to hire players from other countries to national teams? Previously, the national team consisted of players from the specific area. But now the word “local” is just nominal. More than often, national teams consist of multinational players.
  • Soccer matches can raise violent confrontation among the spectators. What are the possible measures to avoid aggression and vandalism? Does it depend on the host country?
  • Why is women’s soccer less popular than its male variant? Women tend to play more gentle, is it the cause? Are there more male spectators who prefer watching men playing soccer?
  • Is the short career of a soccer player worth the long years of training? Typically, players’ careers last for 15 years. After that, they can work as coaches or fulfill their potential in another activity. Is it enough to be satisfied with one’s life?

Transcript – BROTHERS – Motivational Speech |  Fearless Motivation

Today, before you go out on that field, I want you to do 2 things:

First, I want you to take a good look in the mirror.

Who you will see looking back at you is the ONLY person that can make you a winner or loser today.

Because ONLY YOU decide if you will leave your all on that field today.

I can’t do it for you. Your mom or dad can’t. Your brothers can’t. No one can… but YOU!

It’s up to you.

YOU MUST DECIDE every time you set foot on that field that you will give everything you have inside of you.

As a matter of pure personal PRIDE and INTEGRITY

If you don’t give your HEART and SOUL for the cause, you should be ashamed.

It’s INTEGRITY!
 It’s YOU vs YOU
! It’s SELF PRIDE!

I don’t care if you win or lose the game. Sometimes sport is cruel.

But if I see any of you give anything less than 100% – you’ve lost respect from me, and you should lose it from yourself.

YOU GIVE EVERYTHING!
 LEAVE NO REGRETS out there.
 NOT AN OUNCE OF EFFORT!

That is what a real champion is made of!

Second, I want you to take a look around the room before you go out.

These aren’t just your teammates, they are your fellow warriors. They are your BROTHERS. They are FAMILY.

You are family!

You die for your family! You sacrifice for your family! You give your heart to your family!

If you see one of your brothers needs help – go help your brother! If you care for your brothers you WILL GIVE ANYTHING to your brothers!

NOW…

GO OUT THERE AND GIVE EVERYTHING YOU HAVE, for yourself, for your FAMILY!

 For your BROTHERS!!!

Say it with me:

 TODAY!!!…
I GIVE MY ALL!
WIN, LOSE, There is no real defeat, unless I look in that mirror with regret.

I WILL NOT BE DEFEATED !
I WILL NOT LEAVE AN OUNCE OF GAS IN MY TANK! I WILL FIGHT FOR IT! I WILL GIVE MY HEART! I WILL GIVE MY SOUL! I WILL GIVE MY ALL! LET’S GO!!! LET’S GO!!! LET’S GO!!!

Paul is a keen sportsman and plays football for a local team. What position he plays depends on how good a turnout they get. If they get a full compliment he plays left back or right back, that’s left back in the changing rooms or right back behind the goal.

I think Paul’s sees marriage as being very similar to his beloved football – he’s totally committed, and wants to score every Saturday, change ends at half time and play away half the year. The trouble is, Linda is predicting that he’s going to suffer from a serious groin injury if he does.

11 memorable half-time team talks: Ferguson, Warnock, Brown…

A rousing half-time team talk is often the inspiration a side need to go forth and triumph – as  Arsenal , Manchester United , Chelsea and even England have found out over the years.

Every manager has their own methods to get a tune out of their players – some subtle, others not so – as their job is ultimately on the line.

Such methods, as these 11 team talks show, range from genius to downright bizarre.

Ashley Young

You’re 2-0 down to your rivals. Your rivals’ fans are jeering you. Your rivals are about to win the league against you. You’re facing potential humiliation.

These are just some of the circumstances that were facing Young and his Manchester United team-mates as they trudged down the tunnel at the Etihad Stadium, 45 minutes away from seeing their neighbours romp to the Premier League title.

What followed was Young – accompanied by Michael Carrick – giving the team talk of his life.

According to The Guardian, Young bellowed: “The City fans are shouting ‘Olé’ and they’re embarrassing us. Are we going to stand for that?

“Remember your responsibilities to the fans and the  badge. Show some pride and fight for each other.”

Young’s tirade did the trick as United pulled off a monumental comeback in the second half, winning the match 3-2 and delaying City’s title celebrations.

Martin Keown

Had it not been for Martin Keown, we may never have known ‘The Invincibles’.

Not just an immense presence on the pitch, Keown was tasked by Arsene Wenger to give his half-time team talk when Arsenal found themselves 2-1 down to Liverpool deep into the 2003-04 Premier League season.

Having been knocked out of the FA Cup and Champions League in the space of three days the week prior to this Liverpool clash, Wenger knew preserving their unbeaten status was paramount.

Thierry Henry went on to score a hat-trick, and the Gunners won 4-2 without Wenger saying a word at half-time.

Scott Parker

Tucked in shirt, short sleeves, black boots, smart RAF-style hair cut – Scott Parker is the epitome of a model pro.

These qualities clearly stretch far into the dressing room, where ex-West Ham striker Carlton Cole recounts a famous half-time call to arms from the great man himself, when the Hammers were 3-0 down to West Brom in the Premier League.

“Scott was in the zone – I’ve never seen him like that. If you were there you would have had a tear in your eye.” Cole told the BBC.

“Scott Parker showed a lot of passion in the changing room and it spurred us on.”

The Hammers came back to draw 3-3, proving every football team, not matter what level, needs a Scotty Parker.

Neil Warnock

Ah Neil Warnock. If ever there was a good old British antithesis to the Guardiolas of this world, it’s good old Neil Warnock.

This is presumably quite a middle-of-the-road Warnock bollocking, but its availability on Youtube has made it a rather famous piece of theatre.

The most chilling part of the ‘Warnock method’ is his pre-tirade routine: sip a cup of tea alone in the showers (fully clothed) and seethe.

There’s little finesse here – “you’re in f*cking Latvia!” being a definite highlight – but it can’t be denied it’s often effective.

The full, unedited team talk is below for your viewing pleasure:

John Sitton

Another old-school rant, this time from Leyton Orient assistant manager John Sitton.

Sitton was always a maverick, which culminated in him sacking one of his own defenders at half-time against Blackpool during their relegation season in 1994-95.

This team talk is from a different occasion – a 3-0 loss to Brentford to be exact – but it contains Sitton dishing out some harrowing home truths.

Despite the passionately delivered monologue, Orient did not improve and were relegated to the Third Division following Sitton’s sacking towards the end of the season.

Phil Brown

Perhaps the most famous team talk on this list, who can forget Phil Brown’s very public humiliation of his Hull City team?

4-0 down away at Manchester City – they hadn’t  quite become good yet  –  and Brown decides to go all Mike Bassett on his players.

Jimmy Bullard made light of Brown’s Brent-esque antics by replicating the on-pitch team talk with an equally famous celebration.

Neil Warnock (again)

We couldn’t let you go without more Warnock-fuelled excitement.

This clip is from a fly-on-the-wall documentary from his time at Sheffield United, where he is engaged in a three-way, testosterone-fuelled shouting match with Phil Jagielka and captain Chris Morgan.

This could easily be from a Sunday League dressing room, and that’s why we love it.

Sir Alex Ferguson

“Lads, it’s Tottenham.”

While Sir Alex is synonymous with the hairdryer method of motivation, he was hardly a one-trick pony.

Before a league game against the north London side – notoriously fragile in those days – Fergie came into the dressing room and uttered those three immortal words, and nothing else.

Although this was pre-match and not at half-time, we couldn’t leave this off our list.

Of course it still did the trick, and it took Tottenham years to shake off that tag, all courtesy of Sir Alex’s ‘team talk.’

Jose Mourinho

As the thrilling three-way title race of the 2013-14 Premier League season was entering its climax, Jose Mourinho’s Chelsea side travelled to the Etihad to face their title rivals Manchester City.

What did Mourinho do to inspire his players to victory? Give an impassioned call to arms? Nope.

Let the masseur take the team talk of course.

Billy McCulloch – long-serving masseur and an immensely popular figure around Stamford Bridge – poured his heart out to the Chelsea team.

“He was screaming so much in his Scottish, I didn’t understand,” remarked Mourinho after the match.

“But the players were clapping, OK let’s go!”

Chelsea beat City 1-0.

Sir Alf Ramsey

How do you give a team talk to win a World Cup?

After Germany’s late equaliser in the 1966 final, Sir Alf Ramsey had a very simple message for his England side before extra-time:

“You’ve won it once. Now you’ll have to go out there and win it again.”

Same again this summer please Gareth…

Zinedine Zidane

Zinedine Zidane has already won a great deal for such a young coach.

Becoming the first manager to retain the Champions League is an incredible achievement, so we will leave you with footage of Zidane’s team talk at half-time of the 2017 Champions League final against Juventus.

At this point the score was 1-1.

They won the game 4-1.

Full Text: Harrison Butker of Kansas City Chiefs Graduation Speech

The Super Bowl champ and kicker spoke about the dignity of life, masculinity, and the most important role of all: motherhood.

Kansas City Chiefs’ placekicker Harrison Butker speaks to college graduates in his commencement address at Benedictine College on May 11.

Editor’s Note: Harrison Butker, 28, the placekicker for the Kansas City Chiefs of the National Football League, delivered the commencement address at Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas, on Saturday, May 11, 2024. A transcript of his remarks is below.

Ladies and gentlemen of the Class of 2024:  I would like to start off by congratulating all of you for successfully making it to this achievement today. I'm sure your high school graduation was not what you had imagined, and most likely, neither was your first couple years of college.

By making it to this moment through all the adversity thrown your way from COVID, I hope you learned the important lessons that suffering in this life is only temporary. As a group, you witnessed firsthand how bad leaders who don't stay in their lane can have a negative impact on society. It is through this lens that I want to take stock of how we got to where we are, and where we want to go as citizens and, yes, as Catholics. One last thing before I begin, I want to be sure to thank President Minnis and the board for their invitation to speak.

When President Minnis first reached out a couple of months ago, I had originally said No. You see, last year I gave the commencement address at my alma mater, Georgia Tech, and I felt that one graduation speech was more than enough, especially for someone who isn't a professional speaker. But of course, President Minnis used his gift of persuasion. [ Laughter ] It spoke to the many challenges you all faced throughout the COVID fiasco ,and how you missed out on so many milestones the rest of us older people have taken for granted. While COVID might have played a large role throughout your formative years, it is not unique. Bad policies and poor leadership have negatively impacted major life issues. Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for degenerate cultural values in media, all stem from the pervasiveness of disorder.

Our own nation is led by a man who publicly and proudly proclaims his Catholic faith, but at the same time is delusional enough to make the Sign of the Cross during a pro- abortion rally. He has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies that I'm sure to many people it appears that you can be both Catholic and pro-choice.

He is not alone. From the man behind the COVID lockdowns to the people pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America, they all have a glaring thing in common. They are Catholic. This is an important reminder that being Catholic alone doesn't cut it.

These are the sorts of things we are told in polite society to not bring up. You know, the difficult and unpleasant things. But if we are going to be men and women for this time in history, we need to stop pretending that the "Church of Nice" is a winning proposition. We must always speak and act in charity, but never mistake charity for cowardice.

It is safe to say that over the past few years, I have gained quite the reputation for speaking my mind. I never envisioned myself, nor wanted, to have this sort of a platform, but God has given it to me, so I have no other choice but to embrace it and preach more hard truths about accepting your lane and staying in it.

As members of the Church founded by Jesus Christ, it is our duty and ultimately privilege to be authentically and unapologetically Catholic. Don't be mistaken, even within the Church, people in polite Catholic circles will try to persuade you to remain silent. There even was an award-winning film called Silence , made by a fellow Catholic, wherein one of the main characters, a Jesuit priest, abandoned the Church, and as an apostate when he died is seen grasping a crucifix, quiet and unknown to anyone but God. As a friend of Benedictine College, His Excellency Bishop Robert Barron, said in his review of the film, it was exactly what the cultural elite want to see in Christianity -- private, hidden away, and harmless.

Our Catholic faith has always been countercultural. Our Lord, along with countless followers, were all put to death for their adherence to her teachings. The world around us says that we should keep our beliefs to ourselves whenever they go against the tyranny of diversity, equity, and inclusion. We fear speaking truth, because now, unfortunately, truth is in the minority. Congress just passed a bill where stating something as basic as the biblical teaching of who killed Jesus could land you in jail.

But make no mistake, before we even attempt to fix any of the issues plaguing society, we must first get our own house in order, and it starts with our leaders. The bishops and priests appointed by God as our spiritual fathers must be rightly ordered. There is not enough time today for me to list all the stories of priests and bishops misleading their flocks, but none of us can blame ignorance anymore and just blindly proclaim that “That's what Father said.” Because sadly, many priests we are looking to for leadership are the same ones who prioritize their hobbies or even photos with their dogs and matching outfits for the parish directory.

It's easy for us laymen and women to think that in order for us to be holy, that we must be active in our parish and try to fix it. Yes, we absolutely should be involved in supporting our parishes, but we cannot be the source for our parish priests to lean on to help with their problems. Just as we look at the relationship between a father and his son, so too should we look at the relationship between a priest and his people. It would not be appropriate for me to always be looking to my son for help when it is my job as his father to lead him.

St. Josemaría Escrivá states that priests are ordained to serve, and should not yield to temptation to imitate laypeople, but to be priests through and through. Tragically, so many priests revolve much of their happiness from the adulation they receive from their parishioners, and in searching for this, they let their guard down and become overly familiar. This undue familiarity will prove to be problematic every time, because as my teammate's girlfriend says, familiarity breeds contempt. [ Laughter ]

Saint Josemaría continues that some want to see the priest as just another man. That is not so. They want to find in the priest those virtues proper to every Christian, and indeed every honorable man:  understanding, justice, a life of work — priestly work, in this instance — and good manners. It is not prudent as the laity for us to consume ourselves in becoming amateur theologians so that we can decipher this or that theological teaching — unless, of course, you are a theology major. We must be intentional with our focus on our state in life and our own vocation. And for most of us, that's as married men and women. Still, we have so many great resources at our fingertips that it doesn't take long to find traditional and timeless teachings that haven't been ambiguously reworded for our times. Plus, there are still many good and holy priests, and it's up to us to seek them out.

The chaos of the world is unfortunately reflected in the chaos in our parishes, and sadly, in our cathedrals too. As we saw during the pandemic, too many bishops were not leaders at all. They were motivated by fear, fear of being sued, fear of being removed, fear of being disliked. They showed by their actions, intentional or unintentional, that the sacraments don't actually matter. Because of this, countless people died alone, without access to the sacraments, and it's a tragedy we must never forget. As Catholics, we can look to so many examples of heroic shepherds who gave their lives for their people, and ultimately, the Church. We cannot buy into the lie that the things we experienced during COVID were appropriate. Over the centuries, there have been great wars, great famines, and yes, even great diseases, all that came with a level of lethality and danger. But in each of those examples, Church leaders leaned into their vocations and ensured that their people received the sacraments.

Great saints like St. Damien of Molokai, who knew the dangers of his ministry, stayed for 11 years as a spiritual leader to the leper colonies of Hawaii. His heroism is looked at today as something set apart and unique, when ideally it should not be unique at all. For as a father loves his child, so a shepherd should love his spiritual children, too.

That goes even more so for our bishops, these men who are present-day apostles. Our bishops once had adoring crowds of people kissing their rings and taking in their every word, but now relegate themselves to a position of inconsequential existence. Now, when a bishop of a diocese or the bishop's conference as a whole puts out an important document on this matter or that, nobody even takes a moment to read it, let alone follow it.

No. Today, our shepherds are far more concerned with keeping the doors open to the chancery than they are with saying the difficult stuff out loud. It seems that the only time you hear from your bishops is when it's time for the annual appeal, whereas we need our bishops to be vocal about the teachings of the Church, setting aside their own personal comfort and embracing their cross. Our bishops are not politicians but shepherds, so instead of fitting in the world by going along to get along, they too need to stay in their lane and lead.

I say all of this not from a place of anger, as we get the leaders we deserve. But this does make me reflect on staying in my lane and focusing on my own vocation and how I can be a better father and husband and live in the world but not be of it. Focusing on my vocation while praying and fasting for these men will do more for the Church than me complaining about her leaders.

Because there seems to be so much confusion coming from our leaders, there needs to be concrete examples for people to look to in places like Benedictine, a little Kansas college built high on a bluff above the Missouri River, are showing the world how an ordered, Christ-centered existence is the recipe for success. You need to look no further than the examples all around this campus, where over the past 20 years, enrollment has doubled, construction and revitalization are a constant part of life, and people, the students, the faculty and staff, are thriving. This didn't happen by chance. In a deliberate movement to embrace traditional Catholic values, Benedictine has gone from just another liberal arts school with nothing to set it apart to a thriving beacon of light and a reminder to us all that when you embrace tradition, success — worldly and spiritual — will follow.

I am certain the reporters at the AP could not have imagined that their attempt to rebuke and embarrass places and people like those here at Benedictine wouldn't be met with anger, but instead met with excitement and pride. Not the deadly sin sort of pride that has an entire month dedicated to it, but the true God-centered pride that is cooperating with the Holy Ghost to glorify him. Reading that article now shared all over the world, we see that in the complete surrender of self and a turning towards Christ, you will find happiness. Right here in a little town in Kansas, we find many inspiring laypeople using their talents.

President Minnis, Dr. [Andrew] Swafford, and Dr. [Jared] Zimmerer are a few great examples right here on this very campus that will keep the light of Christ burning bright for generations to come. Being locked in with your vocation and staying in your lane is going to be the surest way for you to find true happiness and peace in this life.

It is essential that we focus on our own state in life, whether that be as a layperson, a priest, or religious. Ladies and gentlemen of the class of 2024, you are sitting at the edge of the rest of your lives. Each of you has the potential to leave a legacy that transcends yourselves and this era of human existence. In the small ways, by living out your vocation, you will ensure that God's Church continues and the world is enlightened by your example.

For the ladies present today, congratulations on an amazing accomplishment. You should be proud of all that you have achieved to this point in your young lives. I want to speak directly to you briefly because I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you. How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.

I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I'm on the stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation. I'm beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me, but it cannot be overstated that all of my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife, and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.

[ Applause lasting 18 seconds ]

She is a primary educator to our children. She is the one who ensures I never let football or my business become a distraction from that of a husband and father. She is the person that knows me best at my core, and it is through our marriage that, Lord willing, we will both attain salvation.

I say all of this to you because I have seen it firsthand how much happier someone can be when they disregard the outside noise and move closer and closer to God's will in their life. Isabelle's dream of having a career might not have come true, but if you asked her today if she has any regrets on her decision, she would laugh out loud, without hesitation, and say, “Heck, No.”

As a man who gets a lot of praise and has been given a platform to speak to audiences like this one today, I pray that I always use my voice for God and not for myself. Everything I am saying to you is not from a place of wisdom, but rather a place of experience. I am hopeful that these words will be seen as those from a man, not much older than you, who feels it is imperative that this class, this generation, and this time in our society must stop pretending that the things we see around us are normal.

Heterodox ideas abound even within Catholic circles. But let's be honest, there is nothing good about playing God with having children — whether that be your ideal number or the perfect time to conceive. No matter how you spin it, there is nothing natural about Catholic birth control.

It is only in the past few years that I have grown encouraged to speak more boldly and directly because, as I mentioned earlier, I have leaned into my vocation as a husband and father, and as a man.

To the gentlemen here today: Part of what plagues our society is this lie that has been told to you that men are not necessary in the home or in our communities. As men, we set the tone of the culture, and when that is absent, disorder, dysfunction, and chaos set in. This absence of men in the home is what plays a large role in the violence we see all around the nation. Other countries do not have nearly the same absentee father rates as we find here in the U.S., and a correlation could be made in their drastically lower violence rates, as well.

Be unapologetic in your masculinity, fighting against the cultural emasculation of men. Do hard things. Never settle for what is easy. You might have a talent that you don't necessarily enjoy, but if it glorifies God, maybe you should lean into that over something that you might think suits you better. I speak from experience as an introvert who now finds myself as an amateur public speaker and an entrepreneur, something I never thought I'd be when I received my industrial engineering degree.

The road ahead is bright. Things are changing. Society is shifting. And people, young and old, are embracing tradition. Not only has it been my vocation that has helped me and those closest to me, but not surprising to many of you, should be my outspoken embrace of the traditional Latin Mass. I've been very vocal in my love and devotion to the TLM and its necessity for our lives. But what I think gets misunderstood is that people who attend the TLM do so out of pride or preference. I can speak to my own experience, but for most people I have come across within these communities this simply is not true. I do not attend the TLM because I think I am better than others, or for the smells and bells, or even for the love of Latin. I attend the TLM because I believe, just as the God of the Old Testament was pretty particular in how he wanted to be worshipped, the same holds true for us today. It is through the TLM that I encountered order, and began to pursue it in my own life. Aside from the TLM itself, too many of our sacred traditions have been relegated to things of the past, when in my parish, things such as ember days, days when we fast and pray for vocations and for our priests, are still adhered to. The TLM is so essential that I would challenge each of you to pick a place to move where it is readily available.

A lot of people have complaints about the parish or the community, but we should not sacrifice the Mass for community. I prioritize the TLM even if the parish isn't beautiful, the priest isn't great, or the community isn't amazing. I still go to the TLM because I believe the holy sacrifice of the Mass is more important than anything else. I say this knowing full well that when each of you rekindle your knowledge and adherence to many of the church's greatest traditions, you will see how much more colorful and alive your life can and should be.

As you move on from this place and enter into the world, know that you will face many challenges. Sadly, I'm sure many of you know of the countless stories of good and active members of this community who, after graduation and moving away from the Benedictine bubble, have ended up moving in with their boyfriend or girlfriend prior to marriage. Some even leave the Church and abandon God. It is always heartbreaking to hear these stories, and there is a desire to know what happened and what went wrong.

What you must remember is that life is about doing the small things well, setting yourself up for success, and surrounding yourself with people who continually push you to be the best version of you. I say this all the time, that iron sharpens iron. It's a great reminder that those closest to us should be making us better. If you are dating someone who doesn't even share your faith, how do you expect that person to help you become a saint? If your friend group is filled with people who only think about what you're doing next weekend and are not willing to have those difficult conversations, how can they help sharpen you?

As you prepare to enter into the workforce, it is extremely important that you actually think about the places you are moving to. Who is the bishop? What kind of parishes are there? Do they offer the TLM and have priests who embrace their priestly vocation? Cost of living must not be the only arbiter of your choices, for a life without God is not a life at all, and the cost of salvation is worth more than any career.

I'm excited for the future, and I pray that something I have said will resonate as you move on to the next chapter of your life.

Never be afraid to profess the one holy, Catholic, and apostolic Church, for this is the Church that Jesus Christ established, through which we receive sanctifying grace.

I know that my message today had a little less fluff than is expected for these speeches, but I believe that this audience and this venue is the best place to speak openly and honestly about who we are and where we all want to go, which is Heaven.

I thank God for Benedictine College and for the example it provides the world. I thank God for men like President Minnis, who are doing their part for the Kingdom. Come to find out you can have an authentically Catholic college and a thriving football program. [ Laughter and applause ]

Make no mistake: You are entering into mission territory in a post-God world, but you were made for this. And with God by your side and a constant striving for virtue within your vocation, you too can be a saint.

Christ is King.

To the Heights.

Speech on Football

To many people around the world, football is the game played with two teams of eleven, one round football and two goals. In America, football is a different game with two teams of 45 players, an oval ball and two sets of goalposts.

For the benefit of this speech, I refer to the game with the round ball as football. It is by far the most popular sport in the world with an estimated 4 billion fans. And ‘football’ is the name those fans mostly call the sport of the round ball. It is also sometimes referred to as soccer. The name soccer is said to have evolved from the slang term, ‘Sock it’ (kick it) which is still used in Britain today.

Football is a team sport, and one that is ubiquitous; it is entertaining to watch as well as to participate in the game. And like every other sport, football has had its own share of controversies over the years and it is also one home to some of the richest sporting clubs in the world. Today, football has a high standard of play at professional levels, which are governed by FIFA, a regulating body that regulates the sport, at all levels. However, there would be no professional level of football if it were not for the love of and participation in the amateur game.

Speech on football

The modern history of the world’s favorite game spans more than 100 years. It started in 1863 in England, when rugby football and association football split, following different courses, and the Football Association in England was formed as the sport’s first governing body. However, forms of football can be traced back to 5 th century BC. People have enjoyed kicking inflated leather skin balls around for thousands of years. This game playing can be traced back to nations such as China, South America, Japan, and other nations.

This game evolved over the years resulting in more rules being formulated, with universal agreement. Finally, a league was formed where general rules and regulations were debated, argued before finally being adopted. While Football, as we know it today, is quite different from its early variants, with structured game formats, referees, specified schedules whereas most of the early variants had little or no rules. Even today some rules are continuously changing. Technology such as VAR has crept into the game. It allows replays to be shown to the referee so he or she may make a second opinion on important decisions.

Naturally, as with the most popular sport, football is not immune to violence and passions can run high as fans follow their local teams. There is often a minority who will resort to violence, and bad language. While it can be hard to equate violence with any sport, the fact remains that fans tend to view sports as a way to challenge others for superiority and sometimes a minority of the losing side will often feel aggrieved enough to start attacking others. Well, that seems to be one of the reasons why a few football matches end in riots, with most of them indulging in physical violence, wanton acts of damage, and even arson.

Some of the riots in the UK can be linked back to a football game where the audience needing a way to vent their frustration, and disappointment often decided to indulge in acts of arson and looting. But then again, this is one of the few games that have a massive following, with several hundred football clubs, spread across many nations. So to say that FIFA is a rich organization would be an understatement. But then again, FIFA is in charge of running the show, from organizing football matches between various clubs, countries as well as organizing the world cup. Hosting a professional football game can be an expensive affair – when you take into account the fact that the grounds have to be strictly maintained, with transportation and various other facilities being made available for the audience. To put it in perspective, Brazil had to spend nearly 15 billion USD for hosting the world cup. That’s something to think about right? At the least, it should make it apparent to us all that football games are bound to become more popular than ever before.

Harrison Butker’s commencement speech: Wives should stay at home. His mom’s a medical physicist

Harrison Butker is a three-time Super Bowl champion and one of the most accurate field-goal kickers in NFL history.

As such, the Kansas City Chiefs kicker was given a platform to express his views as the commencement speaker at Benedictine College .

The devout Christian used the opportunity to give some radical thoughts and controversial opinions during a 20-minute speech delivered at the ceremony honoring the 485 students graduating from the Catholic private liberal arts school in Atchison, Kan., on Saturday.

Butker took shots at gender roles, abortion, President Biden and Pride month during his Benedictine address. Now the NFL appears to be distancing itself from the 28-year-old.

“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity,” Jonathan Beane, NFL senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, said in a statement emailed to The Times. “His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

At Benedictine, Butker told the male graduates to “be unapologetic in your masculinity” and congratulated the female graduates on their “amazing accomplishment.” He went on to tell the women that he “would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world.”

Butker then told those women that “my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother. I’m on this stage today and able to be the man I am because I have a wife who leans into her vocation.”

Butker — whose mother, Elizabeth Keller Butker, is a medical physicist at Emory University’s Winship Cancer Institute in Atlanta — then started getting choked up. She’s worked at Emory since 1988, according to her LinkedIn profile.

“I’m beyond blessed with the many talents God has given me,” Butker said, “but it cannot be overstated that all my success is made possible because a girl I met in band class back in middle school would convert to the faith, become my wife and embrace one of the most important titles of all: homemaker.”

That statement was met with 18 seconds of enthusiastic cheers and applause. Butker continued praising his wife and her role in their family.

“She’s the primary educator to our children. She’s the one who ensures I never let football or my business become a distraction from that of a husband and a father. She is the person that knows me best at my core and it is through our marriage that, Lord willing, we both will attain salvation.”

During his opening remarks, Butker stated that “things like abortion , in vitro fertilization , surrogacy , euthanasia, as well as a growing support for the degenerate cultural values and media, all stem from the pervasiveness of disorder.”

He also said that Biden “has been so vocal in his support for the murder of innocent babies that I’m sure to many people it appears you can be both Catholic and pro-choice.”

At one point, Butker mentioned the word “pride” — then clarified that he wasn’t talking about “the deadly sins sort of Pride that has an entire month dedicated to it, but the true God-centered pride that is cooperating with the Holy Ghost to glorify Him.”

The comment, a jab at the LGBTQ+ community that celebrates Pride Month every June, received a few chuckles from the audience.

When Butker finished his address, the crowd rose for an ovation. Susannah Leisegang , a former Benedictine track and field athlete who graduated Saturday with a degree in graphic design, said she was among the handful of people who did not stand.

“Some of us did boo — me and my roommate definitely did,” Leisegang said in a video she posted on TikTok . “There was a standing ovation from everyone in the room, except from me, my roommate and about 10 to 15 other women. You also have to keep in mind this was at a Catholic and conservative college, so a lot of the men were like, ‘F— yeah!’ They were excited. But it was horrible. Most of the women were looking back and forth at each other like, ‘What the f— is going on?’”

Leisegang pointed out that she is 21 and has a job lined up in her field.

“Getting married and having kids is not my ideal situation right now,” she said. “So, yeah, it was definitely horrible and it definitely made graduation feel a little less special, knowing I had to sit through that and get told I’m nothing but a homemaker.”

Other members of the graduating class who participated in the ceremony have shared a variety of opinions on Butker’s speech. Elle Wilbers, 22, a future medical school student, told the Associated Press she thought Butker’s reference to the LGBTQ+ community was “horrible.”

“We should have compassion for the people who have been told all their life that the person they love is like, it’s not OK to love that person,” she said.

Kassidy Neuner, 22, who plans to teach for a year before going to law school, told the AP that being a stay-at-home parent is “a wonderful decision” but “it’s also not for everybody.”

“I think that he should have addressed more that it’s not always an option,” she said. “And, if it is your option in life, that’s amazing for you. But there’s also the option to be a mother and a career woman.”

ValerieAnne Volpe, 20, who graduated with an art degree, told the AP she thought Butker said things that “people are scared to say.”

“You can just hear that he loves his wife,” Volpe said. “You can hear that he loves his family,” she said.

Butker has not commented publicly since the address. His previous social media posts are being used by people leaving comments both blasting and supporting his remarks. Heavy.com reports that all images of Isabelle Butker have been removed from her husband’s X and Instagram feeds in recent days.

Benedictine has not publicly addressed Butker’s controversial statements and did not immediately respond to multiple messages from The Times. The college’s social media feeds have been flooded with angry comments regarding Butker’s speech, and the comment section for the YouTube video of it has been disabled.

An article on Benedictine’s website about the commencement ceremony had initially referred to Butker’s speech as “inspiring.” The uncredited piece includes a reworked version of Butker’s “homemaker” quote that does not include that word, with no indication that the quote had been altered.

The official X account for Kansas City also appeared to attempt putting a humorous spin on the matter, posting a “reminder” that Butker lives in a different city Wednesday night before deleting it and posting an apology .

Earlier in the week on X, Kansas City Mayor Quinton Lucas appeared to defend Butker’s right to express his views .

Kansas City kicker Harrison Butker is getting attention for comments he made during a commencement address at Benedictine College last weekend in which he congratulated the women receiving degrees, but then said most were probably more excited to get married and have children.

The three-time Super Bowl champion also railed against President Joe Biden's stance on abortion and his leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic, as well as Catholic leaders he said were "pushing dangerous gender ideologies onto the youth of America."

Butker delivered his roughly 20-minute address Saturday at the Catholic private liberal arts school in Atchison, Kansas, which is located about 60 miles north of Kansas City.

Butker, who has made his conservative Catholic beliefs well known, also criticized an article by The Associated Press highlighting a shift toward conservativism in some parts of the Catholic Church.

The 28-year-old Butker took aim at Biden's policies, including his response to COVID-19, which has killed nearly 1.2 million people in the U.S., according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention.

"While COVID might have played a large role throughout your formative years, it is not unique," he said. "Bad policies and poor leadership have negatively impacted major life issues. Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for degenerate cultural values and media all stem from pervasiveness of disorder."

Butker later addressed the women in the audience, saying that his wife embraced "one of the most important titles of all. Homemaker."

"I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolical lies told to you," Butker said. "Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say that her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother."

The Kansas City franchise declined to comment on Butker's commencement address.

The 2017 seventh-round pick out of Georgia Tech has become of the NFL's best kickers, breaking Kansas City's franchise record with a 62-yard field goal in 2022. Butker helped them win their first Super Bowl in 50 years in 2020, added a second Lombardi Trophy in 2023, and he kicked the field goal that forced overtime in a Super Bowl win over San Francisco in February.

It has been an embarrassing off-season for Kansas City, though.

Last month, voters in Jackson County, Missouri, soundly rejected a ballot initiative that would have helped pay for a downtown ballpark for the Royals and an $800 million US renovation to Arrowhead Stadium, the home of Kansas City's NFL team. Many voters criticized the plan put forward by Kansas City as catering primarily to VIPs and the wealthy.

The same week, wide receiver Rashee Rice turned himself in to Dallas police on multiple charges, including aggravated assault, after he was involved in a high-speed crash that left four people with injuries. Rice has acknowledged being the driver of one of the sports cars that was going in excess of 100 miles per hour, and video shows him leaving the scene without providing information or determining whether anyone needed medical attention.

Last week, law enforcement officials told The Dallas Morning News that Rice also was suspected of assaulting a person at a downtown nightclub; Dallas police did not name Rice as the suspect in detailing a report to The Associated Press.

Kansas City coach Andy Reid said he had spoken to the receiver and the team was letting the legal process play out.

NFL Issues Direct Response to Controversial Graduation Speech From Chiefs Kicker Harrison Butker

A fter Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gave a controversial graduation commencement speech at Benedictine College that led to heavy criticism, the National Football League finally shared its official response.

On May 15, Jonathan Beane , the NFL’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, told People , “Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

Many others have also shared statements condemning Butker's speech, such as Justice Horn , former Kansas City commissioner, who wrote, "Harrison Butker doesn’t represent Kansas City nor has he ever. Kansas City has always been a place that welcomes, affirms, and embraces our LGBTQ+ community members. 🌈."

The speech got heavy backlash for Butker's problematic comments regarding gender roles, abortion, IVF and more, such as when he told the women in the audience that "one of the most important titles of all" for them was "homemaker."

Criticism was amplified due to the fact that he also quoted singer Taylor Swift in his speech, although he didn't name her, instead saying, "As my teammate's girlfriend says, 'familiarity breeds contempt.'"

Swifties quickly called him out for his statements , especially given the fact that he appeared to put down the idea of women focusing on their careers yet referenced Swift, one of the most successful businesswomen in the world right now.

In the days since the speech, people in attendance have also started sharing their reactions to the moment, with one new graduate calling the speech "horrible" and noting that she, her roommate, and some others did "boo" Butker as he spoke.

As of writing, Butker has not shared any response to the backlash to his speech.

‘The Daily Show’ Skewers NFL Kicker Harrison Butker’s Viral Commencement Speech | Video

  • Oops! Something went wrong. Please try again later. More content below

Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker ’s viral commencement speech has made its way to “The Daily Show.” Cohosts Ronny Chieng and Jordan Klepper roasted the antiquated comments from Travis Kelce ’s teammate Wednesday night in a segment called, “Sports War.”

“A player on the Kansas City Chiefs is in hot water after making the biggest mistake any football player could make — talking,” Chieng began.

A news segment played highlighting Butker’s misogynistic address from last weekend at Catholic liberal arts universityh Benedictine College in Atchison, Kansas. The athlete suggested that women’s most important roles were as housewives and mothers, urging his fellow men to be more masculine , in addition to other sexist and homophobic hot takes.

“I say we should listen to this kicker, OK? They’re the football players with the least amount of brain damage,” Chieng continued.

Ultimately, the comedian used Butker’s controversy to insult Klepper, saying, “I’m glad he’s speaking up for emasculated men, like Jordan. Congratulations, Jordan — for the first time in your life, someone on the football team is speaking to you.”

Butker’s speech made such an impact that the NFL was forced to issue a statement through Jonathan Beane, the league’s senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, on Thursday.

“Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity. His views are not those of the NFL as an organization,” the executive said. “The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger.”

Elsewhere in the “Sports War” segment, Klepper and Chieng debated Caitlin Clark’s first game (and first loss) in the WNBA, the cleanliness of the 2024 Paris Olympic Games and the latest in Shohei Ohtani ’s interpreter scandal. You can watch the full clip above.

“The Daily Show” airs Monday-Thursday at 11 p.m. EST on Comedy Central.

"Not the deadly sins sort of Pride that has an entire month dedicated to it," the Georgia native said, "but the true God-centered pride that is cooperating with the holy ghost to glorify him."

"I can tell you that my beautiful wife, Isabelle, would be the first to say that her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and a mother. I’m on this stage, and able to be the man I am, because I have a wife who leans into her vocation," Butker said.

In the speech, the Chiefs' player quoted a lyric from Taylor Swift's song "Bejeweled" while criticizing some priests for being too close to their parishioners, per  The Sporting News .

"As my teammate's girlfriend says, 'familiarity breeds contempt,'" the 28-year-old said, referring to Chiefs tight end Travis Kelce's high-profile relationship with Swift.

Social media users have circulated the video of Butker's speech, which has now amassed over 180,000 views on YouTube .
