To make it easier for all you horror fans, when you want to find the best horror movies and series, we’ve created a guide sorted by our reviews. Enjoy!

Obviously, we want to highlight the best horror movies and series. However, sometimes you’ve seen them all or you want something more laid-back.

Here’s how to find your next movie or show based on Heaven of Horror’s reviews:

5 or 4 stars review (or rather, blood spatters) is a  definite  recommendation to watch.

3 stars usually mean it’s very entertaining, but once is probably enough. It’s a safe bet if you want to be entertained and need nothing more.

2 stars are for titles that show definite potential and have some winning qualities, which should suit some viewers but might not be for everyone.

1 star isn’t something we recommend*.

Click on the number of stars below  and find out which horror movie or series to watch…

Best Horror Titles:

Decent horror titles:, worst horror titles:.

*We do have to admit that any movie or series receiving just 1 star  might be worth watching. But for different reasons. As in; You will not enjoy this as a horror title, but you’ll be inspired that they managed to even make a movie or show. You might even be left wondering if you shouldn’t make your own movie.

Who knows, maybe you’ll end up making one of the best horror movies and find it here on our list.

Best Horror Movies of 2024 Ranked – New Scary Movies to Watch

Welcome to the best horror movies of 2024, ranking every dark and dreary delight coming out this year by Tomatometer! We start the list with Certified Fresh films (these movies have maintained a high Tomatometer score after enough critics reviews), followed by the pulp-pounding Fresh movies (these are rated at least 60%), and then concluding with the morbidly Rotten.

May  additions: Tarot . I Saw the TV Glow . The Strangers: Chapter 1 . In A Violent Nature .

In April , spiders got spun out with  Infested and Sting . Nic Cage, never too far away from the genre, returned with action-hybrid Arcadian . Universal took another bite out of the vampire genre (following last year’s  Last Voyage of the Demeter ) with Abigail , while another long-in-the-tooth franchise got an update with The First Omen .

March additions: Larry Fessenden’s back with his werewolf-take Blackout . Night Shift . Imaginary (see Blumhouse horror productions ranked ). Indian Hindi-language Shaitaan. Late Night with the Devil .  Sydney Sweeney’s  Immaculate . You’ll Never Find Me . Winnie-the-Pooh: Blood and Honey 2 .

In February , terror reared its head in the stop-motion animation medium (don’t forget about Phil Tippett’s Mad God in 2021) with the literal titled  Stopmotion .

In 2023 , horror kicked off in a big way with M3GAN . There wasn’t a breakout hit in January 2024, with the major genre releases being the COVID-shot Paleolithic thriller Out of Darkness , and the Diablo Cody-penned Lisa Frankenstein , set in the same world as her cult comedy Jennifer’s Body .

New horror movies for 2024 on the horizon include They Follow (sequel to It Follows , with Maika Monroe and writer/director David Robert Mitchell returning), MaXXXine (Ti West’s closing his trilogy after X and Pearl ), Terrifier 3 (Art the Clown expands his spree into Christmas ), Nosferatu (from director Robert Eggers), Alien: Romulus (due in August), A Quiet Place: Day One (June), Beetlejuice Beetlejuice (September), Return to Silent Hill (original director Christophe Gans returns as well), The Conjuring: Last Rites (Patrick Wilson and Vera Farmiga reprise their Warren roles).

Five Horror Movies to Stream Now

This month’s villains include naughty gay ghosts, savage seniors and a dangerously unhinged bro.

A woman and two men all stand in a living room facing the camera.

By Erik Piepenburg

‘The Jessica Cabin’

Stream it on Amazon Prime Video.

Have you ever said to someone: “I would kill to spend more time with you”? The characters in Daniel Montgomery’s gay horror comedy say it a lot, with macabre but unexpectedly tender and very funny consequences for the living and the dead.

The film opens as a gay couple (Chase Williamson and Will Tranfo) check in at a secluded rental property of the title. There, a pair of ghost best friends — Jackson (Montgomery) and Taylor (Riley Rose Critchlow) — watch their new visitors eat, sleep and have sex. But the fun quickly takes a sinister turn, poignantly lifting the curtain on how Jackson and Taylor came to haunt the house and offering a reminder that trauma doesn’t always leave a room when people do.

Montgomery, who wrote and directed this low-budget charmer, smartly balances the creepy and the nutty in a queer story that’s as much about ghosts being catty as it is about loneliness in the here and agency in the afterlife. The cast is across-the-board good at conveying dark humor, especially in scenes that feel entirely improvised. There’s nothing gory or truly scary here; you’re more likely to cry than scream watching these big-hearted mortals and spirits maneuver their bizarre liminal world.

Stream it on Tubi.

Like many cater-waiters, Kay (Khosi Ngema) and her gay bestie Riley (Matthew Vey) are eager to have a good time on a rich guy’s dime. That’s why they’ve hidden away one night in the mountaintop mansion of a smug billionaire, Pierce (Francis Chouler), after their party shift there ends. Riley leaves for a booty call, leaving Kay alone in the fortresslike home when Pierce, and later his girlfriend (Alex McGregor), unexpectedly return, kicking off a vicious cat-and-mouse game that the writer-director Jem Garrard lines with gruesome twists to bloody the way before a blowout finale.

Garrard follows up their previous Tubi original, the unfunny vampires-vs.-drag queen horror comedy “Slay,” with a far more thrilling battle of wits, here between the have-a-lots and the have-nots. What could have been a heavy-handed 96-minute metaphor is instead a tight “Parasite”-aspiring thriller that’s buoyed by terrific performances from Chouler (charming and sinister) and Ngema (fearless and calculating). For fans of home invasion films, this one comes with a nifty twist: The intruders are the good guys.

‘The Ghost Station’

The young reporter Na-young (Kim Bo-ra) is feeling pressure from the Korean newspaper where she works to “write a provocative story with a clickbait headline,” as an editor tells her. She hits gold when she starts to cover mysterious goings-on inside an old section of a train station where people have been killed and where a child has been spotted among the darkness of the tracks. As Na-young probes the station’s accident-prone history, her investigation leads her into battle against supernatural curses and undead hauntings (and greedy editors).

Hiroshi Takahashi, who co-wrote the film and who wrote the original “Ringu,” here throws in a roster of J-horror best hits: demonic little kids, long-held grudges and even an evil well. But what Jeong Yong-ki’s film lacks in originality it makes up for overall with an effectively creepy ghost story that, in a swift 80 minutes, doubles as a cautionary tale about the perils of shoddy journalism.

‘Old People’

Stream it on Netflix.

“There are old people everywhere!”: That’s the warning, and the political message, that drives this slick dystopian thriller from the German writer-director Andy Fetscher.

The film revolves around a mother (Melika Foroutan) and her kids (Bianca Nawrath and Otto Emil Koch) who head to the country for a wedding. There they meet up with the kids’ grandfather (Paul Fassnacht), who lives in a decrepit, understaffed nursing home where the unsmiling, stooped-over residents look like a circle of maniacs. It’s not a good time to be a German senior: The country has been rocked by a series of grisly murders inexplicably committed by older people.

Although Fetscher’s script takes some harebrained turns, this is a raw killer zombie movie, of sorts, that’s also a cutting and universal indictment of modern eldercare. It’s not that high-minded, though: There are buckets of blood and guts, an extra-fiery finale and, best of all, revenge served senior style.

‘Nightwatch: Demons Are Forever’

Stream it on Shudder.

I’m somewhat a fan of “Nightwatch” (1994), Ole Bornedal’s twisted and scrappy but tonally uneven psychological thriller about a morgue night watchman (Nikolaj Coster-Waldau) who crosses paths with a psychopath scalper (Ulf Pilgaard) terrorizing Copenhagen. (Ewan McGregor starred in the 1997 American remake.)

Coster-Waldau — or the Kingslayer Jaime Lannister, to “Game of Thrones” fans — was the dashing heart and soul of the original. Here he returns as Martin, still dashing, in Bornedal’s glossier and still tonally uneven sequel. (Pilgaard and another original cast member, Kim Bodnia, also reprise their roles.)

This time, Martin’s 22-year-old daughter, Emma (Fanny Leander Bornedal) is a medical student who takes the night watch job overseeing what has become a much larger and gloomier morgue. Curious to learn more about what happened to her father when he worked there, Emma visits the scalper, now blind and disfigured and living in darkness at a mental institution. Their encounter sets them both on a sad and disturbing “Silence of the Lambs”-style trip with consequences that put Martin in the cross hairs.

You don’t need to have seen “Nightwatch” to appreciate this film’s meditations on suffering, aging and mental illness. I very much recommend this film to fellow horror lovers who have waited 30 years to find out what became of Martin after his weird night shift went to hell.

The Substance movie

If you had “Demi Moore to make a hagsploitation body horror splatter movie” on your 2024 bingo card, you stand to make a fortune, but, come on, it’s not very likely; there’s been nothing in her filmography so far — not even 2019’s edgy black comedy Corporate Animals — to suggest that she would ever have a film like The Substance inside her. But here we are, and not only does she give the furthest-out performance this side of Nicolas Cage — who raised the stakes in Cannes this year by eating a rat in The Surfer — she is all in for the humor and clearly totally in sync with Fargeat’s not-really-very-subtle-at-all feminist agenda.

Moore plays Elisabeth Sparkle, a big movie star in the ’80s who now runs a fitness show called Sparkle Your Life on morning television. Like Jane Fonda, she encourages viewers to feel the burn, ending her show with a wink and a catchphrase (“Take care of yourself!”). What she doesn’t know is that the show’s producer ( Dennis Quaid ), a monstrous vulgarian who may or may not be coincidentally called Harvey, wants Elisabeth out, chiefly for the crime of being over 50. Elisabeth finds this out the hard way when she overhears him calling his assistant to find a replacement. “I want her young, I want her hot, and I want her NOW!” he bawls.

“It,” according to the promo material, is The Substance, which, with tubes and syringes and whatnot, will turn out to be quite a process. But the gist of it, presaged at the beginning of the film with an egg yolk, is that The Substance will create “a new you.” The only catch — which in the spirit of cautionary tales seems so simple and yet will prove so hard to adhere to — is that you must share your time: “One week for you. One week for the new you. Seven days each.”

Elisabeth throws the flash drive in the trash, but after seeing her old job advertised in the newspaper, she pulls it out and calls the number. She gets an address, seemingly in the middle of nowhere, and a key pass emblazoned with the number 503. Although no money ever seems to change hands, Elisabeth is up and running when she takes possession of a cardboard box filled with liquids and arcane medical ephemera, emblazoned with words like “Activate,” “Stabilize” and “Switch.” At home, she strips off and jacks up a neon-yellow serum.

Which is where the fun starts.

After a hallucinogenic homage to 2001: A Space Odyssey , Elisabeth gives birth to Sue (Qualley), a pretty young woman who, at first sight, seems a little too wholesome to fill Elisabeth’s shoes. But after an audition for Harvey’s team, Sue gets the job and starts breaking ratings records with a highly sexualized new show called Pump It Up . She starts getting high on fame and breaks the seven-day rule of The Substance, which, physically, takes its toll on Elisabeth. Soon, the two women are embroiled in a battle of wits that can only end in disaster.

And it does.

Fargeat’s first film, Revenge , was a blood-spattered rape-payback movie that, despite its much more down-to-earth setting, required a similar suspension of disbelief. Admirers of that film will easily see her signature tones here; after red, which will eventually spray-paint the entire screen, orange is her go-to color, with a bit of sky-blue here and there. Once again, the music confronts you like a rabid sniffer dog, and there is a fascination for naked human skin that Moore and Qualley quite selflessly oblige, in ways that are never gratuitous.

It’s interesting to notice that, at 61, Moore is actually older that both Bette Davis and Joan Crawford were when they made Whatever Happened to Baby Jane? , the film that kickstarted the hagsploitation cycle of horror films in 1962 and which casts a long shadow over The Substance , especially when tensions between Elisabeth and Sue boil over. Needless to say, Moore still looks amazing, but Fargeat’s film is not about that, it’s about the way Elisabeth allows the male gaze to objectify and belittle her, only to find that the supposedly “better” version of herself has the same insecurities and more of ’em, all dialed up to 11.

Title: The Substance Festival: Cannes (Competition) Director-screenwriter: Coralie Fargeat Cast: Demi Moore, Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid Sales agent: Cinetic Media Running time: 2 hr 20 min

‘the substance’ review: an excellent demi moore helps sustain coralie fargeat’s stylish but redundant body horror.

In her second feature, co-starring Margaret Qualley and Dennis Quaid, the French filmmaker examines society's ghoulish obsession with youth and beauty.

Demi Moore in 'The Substance.'

In The Substance , a woman also takes fate into her own hands and combats underestimation, only this time she’s at war with herself, too. Fargeat combines sci-fi elements (as in her early short Reality+ ) with body horror and satire to show how women are trapped by the dual forces of sexism and ageism. Beauty and youth are the targets at the heart of this film, but the director also takes aim at Hollywood’s ghoulish machinations and the compulsive physical and psychological intrusiveness of cisgender heterosexual men.

Fargeat flaunts an exciting hyperactive style. Ultra wide-angle shots, close-ups and a bubble-gum color palette contribute to the film’s surreal — and at times uncanny — visual language. The British composer Raffertie’s thunderous score adds an appropriately ominous touch, especially during moments of corporeal mutilation.

During his final meeting with Elisabeth, Harvey doubles down on his offensiveness. By the time women reach the age of 50, he suggests to Elisabeth while stuffing his mouth with shrimp, it’s over for them. Fargeat heightens the perversity of Harvey’s blunt assessment with shots of his mouth masticating on shellfish bits. As he crushes the coral-colored creatures with his molars, Elisabeth stares at him with a faint disgust bordering on hatred. Quaid’s character lives in the more satirical notes of The Substance , and the actor responds with an appropriately mocking performance.

Harvey’s words, coupled with the blank stares Elisabeth now receives from passersby, drive the actress to seek a solution. She reaches out to the anonymous purveyors of The Substance, a program that allows people to essentially clone a younger version of themselves. While Fargeat’s screenplay leaves much to be desired when it comes to conveying the company’s scale of operations or how they function in her version of Los Angeles, the rules of the experiment are straightforward. After individuals spawn their duplicates, it’s critical they maintain a balanced life. Every 7 days one of them enters a coma, kept alive through a feeding tube, while the other roams free. Then they switch. The catch, of course, is the addiction of youth.

Moore imbues her character with a visceral desperation, one that enriches the unsettling undercurrents of Fargeat’s film. She plays a woman who can’t quit the addiction of having youth at her fingertips despite its lacerating effect on her psyche. In one particularly strong scene, Elisabeth, haunted by a giant billboard of Sue outside her window, struggles to leave the house for a date. She tirelessly redoes her makeup and each attempt reveals the layers of anguish behind the actress’s pristine facade.

Moore leans into the physical requirements of her role later in the film. Elisabeth eventually learns that upsetting the balance of the experiment reduces her vitality. Sue, greedier for more time outside the coma, becomes a kind of vampire, and Elisabeth wilts. Moore’s slow walk and hunched shoulders add to the sense of her character’s suffering. Special makeup effects by Pierre-Olivier Persin render Elisabeth’s withering even more startling and persuasive.

Qualley does not have as meaty a role as Moore. Her character functions as Elisabeth’s foil, seeming to exist only to help us understand the perversion of Hollywood’s gaze on the starlet. That’s a shame, because The Substance ’s smart premise and direction promise more revelatory confrontations between Elisabeth and Sue than the one we are offered.
