The PhD in Public Health aims to provide high calibre education and advanced training in public health sciences. It takes advantage of Xi’an Jiaotong-Liverpool University’s international and vibrant research environment to prepare graduates for research careers in any setting and equip students with highly specialised technical skills.

This programme is based extensively on self-motivated research. Students on this programme are formally registered with the University of Liverpool as off-site postgraduate research students. You will carry out research on XJTLU premises under the supervision of academic staff from both XJTLU and the University of Liverpool.

Pursuing a full-time PhD typically involves three years of conducting research and one year of writing a thesis, supported by skills training and development. A full-time PhD student must submit their thesis within four years (or six years for part-time students).

The programme will be managed through collaboration between XJTLU and the University of Liverpool. Upon successful completion, you will receive a University of Liverpool-issued degree, which is recognised by China’s Ministry of Education.

There is no specific application deadline for each project as they will remain open for applications until the position is filled. PhD students in China face outsize challenges as they try to complete their degrees, according to Nature ’s fifth biennial survey of PhD students. On many measures, students in China fare worse than students in other parts of the world. One telling number: only 55% of the Chinese students who responded to the survey said that they were at least partially satisfied with their PhD experience. For the 5,630 respondents outside China, the satisfaction rate was 72% (see ‘A nation apart’).

PhD in Engineering Programs in China in English

China now has the most PhD graduates in the world and is one of the best places to get your PhD.

The course structure of a PhD or doctoral program in China is similar to the UK and US. First, you will choose a novel topic in your field and conduct a detailed research about it with the assistance of a chosen supervisor. Upon completion of the research, you will submit a thesis presenting significant findings.

The normal length of a full-time Chinese PhD program is three to four years with an option apply for a one year extension to complete writing your dissertation.

Yes there are are scholarships for PhD in China but they are not too simple to apply. You need to find a supervisor and then apply, or you need to be accepted for the CSC scholarship. We suggest that you apply to the PhD program at universities and the scholarships at the same time. More information is here .

PhD Admissions Process

Applying for a PhD in China is different from applying for bachelor or master programs. In addition to meeting the admission requirements and application materials, students are required to find their own supervisors to guide them during the course of their study.

We can help to send you a list of supervisors, and we have a template letter that you can use here . It can be difficult to get hold of the professors, so we put some tips there.

To proceed with your application, you need to find three suitable supervisors from the university for your research proposal. Once your find a supervisor, send the request for supervision on your thesis. If the supervisor approves, you will receive a confirmation letter or email. You can then continue on with the application process.

PhD Admission Requirements

Applicants for doctoral programs must have attained a master’s degree, and students who graduated from a non-Chinese institution must have a master’s degree from an institution recognized by the Ministry of Education of China.

A doctoral degree otherwise known as Ph.D. is the highest form of degree program that one can complete. Enrollment into a doctoral degree program requires you to hold a master’s degree. Obtaining this type of degree can take four to six years. Ph.D. graduates work as experts in areas of business or research.

The most common types of doctoral degrees include: Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.), Juris Doctor (J.D.), Doctor of Medicine (M.D.) and Doctor of Dental Surgery (DDS).

Meet Yiran Hou, 2024 Scientific Teaching Fellow

Yiran Hou is a 2024 WISCIENCE Scientific Teaching Fellow and a postdoc studying genomics and immunology . She previously earned a BS in biology from Tsinghua University in Beijing, China, and a PhD in molecular genetics and genomics from Washington University in St. Louis. She also enjoys rock climbing.

What has been your favorite part of this program so far?  Discussing and practicing teaching with peers!

What are you looking forward to doing in this program? Practicing providing and receiving constructive feedback on teaching design and teaching practice.

What are some of your career goals and how do you think this program will help you achieve them?   I want to take on a role that has responsibilities in both research and teaching. This program has helped me develop the mindset and skillset for teaching. It has also allowed me to see the research component of teaching.

What is one of the most valuable things you have learned as a Fellow?  Reflection is the way to move forward better.

What excites you about teaching? Seeing students grow and thrive.
