There is a clear structure to the text through the use of paragraphing and each paragraph has a clear focus and internal structure.

Music of my homeland: ‘The River’
Did you know that in China traditional music enjoys just as much popularity as modern Pop music? As someone who usually listens to the younger generation-radio, I could hardly believe the parallel success of the two completely different styles of music – until I listened to the traditional song ‘The River’ for the first time.
Unlike the current number one single ‘little red apple’ in the modern charts, which is full of positive energy and easy to dance to, ‘The River’ provides a deep insight into the Chinese history and its culture. Just by listening to this traditional and sentimental song one gets the feeling of being lifted into another space and time, when thousands of years ago the Chinese farmers were working hard in the rice fields, surrounded by the astonishing sound of massive river waves. If one closes the eyes, one can almost see the idyllic nature of giant China, in front of oneself, long before the Industrial Revolution and wars.
And if you are not a fan of traditional music, don’t be put off by its title. ‘The River’ provides more than simply the description of nature, but it also throws an interesting light on the mentality of the Chinese: the strong mind, the persistance, the never-ending motivation, that still can be seen today.
In conclusion, ‘little red apple’ is for me a good and popular song in China, which can easily cheer you up, representing the positive attitude of the Chinese. But if you want to turn away from Westernized music, ‘The River’ is definitely the Chinese song that I would recommend to anybody who wants to visit my homeland and to learn about the Chinese culture from its earliest stages.
5 | All content is relevant to the task. The target reader is fully informed about the two pieces of music and there is a clear recommendation of which one a visitor to China should listen to.
| 4 | The review is written in a natural, confident style and by addressing the reader directly, the tone is engaging throughout. Straightforward and complex ideas, for example when considering the connection between the two pieces of music (first paragraph) and describing the effect of listening to ‘The River’ (second paragraph) are communicated effectively. |
3 | The text is well organised and coherent. The ideas are connected within and across sentences and paragraphs using a variety of cohesive devices. Sentences are generally long and complex and there is some use of organisation patterns, for example ordering information in sentences to create anticipation.
4 | A range of vocabulary, including some less common lexis, is used effectively, although there are occasional instances of less appropriate usage resulting from ambition. A range of simple and complex grammatical forms is used with control and flexibility. There are minimal slips, for example with the use of articles and the incorrect spelling of but these do not impede communication. |
You see the following announcement on a website, Great Lives:
Send us a review of a book or film that focuses on somebody who has made an important contribution to society. Did you learn anything new about the person’s life from the book or film? Did the book or film help you understand why this person made their important contribution? |
Who doesn’t like to watch, even from time to time, an old movie starring an iconic actors and actresses known all over the world? Marylin Monroe, Elizabeth Taylor, Audrey Hepburn – we know them all. Although the last one might be known as well as for not only being an actress, but also a voulanteer helping to fight hunger in Africa. Her latest biography – ,,Audrey’s Hepburn life” tells us the story of a girl, who has made an amazing career, became beloved by millions, won several Oscar awards and was concidered to be a fashion icon. Nevertheless this is not everything that she achived. Audrey always wanted to help other people. This is why after ending her career she decided to help people, who needed this help more than anyone else. The book tells us the story of years of exhausting work in Somalia – for people who needed her help the most. Douzens of photograph present how much she cared about them. The most surprising for me, was the fact that she honestly did not do it to have better public opinion, she was never boasting abot it. But thanks to her fame, more and more people started to get interested in poor districts of Africa. The result was magnificent. Her whole life is an amazing example of how hard work pays off. Propably this is why the book turned out to be such a success. I recommend it to anyone interested in her career and life, I promise you won’t regret it!
5 | All content is relevant and the target reader is fully informed. This review is based on a biography of Audrey Hepburn and describes her work in Africa, helping people in need. This is an appropriate choice because the subject of the book has made a contribution to society. The first point (Did you learn anything new?), is addressed by the candidate when they describe what they found ‘surprising’ (she honestly did not do it to have better public opinion). The second point is more implicit in the text because we are told that [she] always wanted to help, which implies why she made this important contribution.
| 3 | The conventions of the task are used effectively to hold the target reader’s attention and there are examples of descriptive language, language of explanation and a recommendation at the end. The register is neutral, and the tone is engaging (Who doesn’t like to watch; The book tells us the story of; Douzens of photograph; The result was magnificent; I promise you won’t regret it!) which has a positive effect. Both straightforward and some more complex ideas are communicated clearly (Although the last one might be known as well as for not only being an actress, but also a voulanteer helping to fight hunger in Africa; but thanks to her fame, more and more people started to get interested in). |
3 | The text is well organised and coherent. Despite only having one paragraph, there are breaks in the text and a variety of cohesive devices are used to signal connections and changes in topic (Although; but also; Her latest; Nevertheless; This is why; But thanks to; The result was; I recommend). Organisational patterns are evident in the construction of some of the longer sentences where information is contrasted or developed (Her latest biography – ,,Audrey’s Hepburn life” tells us the story of a girl, who has made an amazing career, became beloved by millions, won several Oscar awards and was concidered to be a fashion icon).
3 | There is a range of vocabulary, including some less common lexis used appropriately (iconic actors; beloved by millions; years of exhausting work; Douzens of; boasting abot it; poor districts; hard work pays off). There is a range of simple and more complex grammatical forms used with control and flexibility, particularly in the construction of extended sentences which communicate the more complex ideas. There are some errors, mainly spelling, but these do not impede communication. |
A travel website has asked you to write a review of a holiday resort you have been to, explaining what kinds of people the resort is likely to appeal to, and which aspects of the resort you would most recommend to other visitors. You should also suggest at least one way in which you feel the resort could be improved.
A dream holiday
Have you ever thought of yourself sitting under a palmier tree with a long drink and with an endless tourquise-green water in front of you?
I’ve got this experience of my life last year when my husband and me decided to have a dream holiday and we chose Dominican Republic, more specific Punta Cana as our destination.
We have to choose from a lot of resorts, but finnaly we made up our mind for Palladium Resort which is an enormous, stunning complex of villas, all having their own terrace.
There are six restaurants with their specific and open-bars all over the place, but ‘the piece of resistence’ is the pool – big, clean, with chaise longs directly in the water and, of course, with its own bar. If you’ll come at Palladium, it’s a must.
I have the chance to try scuba-diving and I can tell you that it was the most thrilling moment of mine. Swimming along with lots of tiny creatures of the sea, seeing one sheep?? sinked and transformed into a refugee ?? for small fish, not to mention the corals, was a dream-life come true.
There are also lots of places to visit, like cacao and coffee farms in the mountains where you arrive in big, old trucks with their engines working accordingly. It’s an experience that is worthwhile – full of flavours, colours and joy. Also, you can learn something about the history of the island. Small children are offering you flowers and they lead the way to the farms for a penny.
Only a weak point – there were few chaiselongues on the beach, but apart from that, I can tell you – is a dream holiday.
2 | There are some minor irrelevancies in this review as the candidate mainly focuses on describing their own experiences whilst on holiday. There are descriptions of trips and the resort, and due to the positive angle taken, it is implicit that the candidate recommends these activities. At the end the candidate writes that there were not enough chaise longues on the beach but there is no explicit suggestion of how this could be improved. The target reader is on the whole informed about these two points. The first point about what type of people the resort would appeal to is completely omitted, possibly due to misinterpretation. The candidate describes what they were looking for in a holiday resort and why this one was suitable, but doesn’t expand on this. The target reader is minimally informed about this point
| 3 | The candidate uses the conventions of the communicative task effectively to hold the target reader’s attention, although some of the points are not fully addressed. There is a positive tone throughout which is reflected in the choice of language used (stunning complex; the most thrilling moment; full of flavours …) and the register is consistently neutral. There is language of description, opinion and evaluation used to effectively communicate straightforward ideas about the topic |
2 | The review is generally well organised and coherent. The text is connected with a variety of linking words and cohesive devices, including relative clauses and linking words used at sentence level to connect ideas (and; but apart from that; not to mention; Also).
3 | There is a range of vocabulary, including less common lexis, used appropriately, particularly when describing the resort (endless tourquise-green water; dream holiday; stunning complex of villas). There is a confusing vocabulary error (one sheep [ship] sinked and transformed into a refugee for small fish) but this may be linked to pronunciation and in the context of scuba diving, it is unlikely to impede. There is a range of simple and some complex grammatical forms used with a good degree of control. Although the review is written in both past and present tenses, errors very rarely impede communication. |
And it's coming to switch, too.
Sony and LEGO have officially announced their LEGO rendition of Horizon: Zero Dawn, entitled LEGO Horizon Adventures, at Summer of Gaming today. It's coming to Nintendo Switch, PC, and PlayStation 5 at launch this holiday.
LEGO Horizon Adventures is an action adventure game inspired by the world of Horizon, and designed for two-player, couch co-op play. It appears to be a comedic take on Horizon co-developed by Guerrilla Games and Studio Gobo, with Aloy as the star and very loosely following the story of Zero Dawn.
Aloy still fights cool robot dinosaurs (there's a very shiny looking Thunderjaw fight in the trailer), but it's all a little silly — very LEGO. There also appear to be plenty of unlockable costumes for both Aloy and her co-op companion, and the ability to make a customizable base in Mother's Heart that you can fill with lots of buildings that were...not necessarily available in regular Horizon.
LEGO Horizon Adventures was leaked earlier this month by various reports, but with few details. We've previously seen LEGO collaborate with PlayStation and Guerrilla Games for actual physical LEGO sets based on the game . And LEGO has made a number of successful video games based on Star Wars, Marvel, and other properties. But a LEGO version of an already-existing first-party video game is a new frontier for the company.
You can catch up with everything else announced at Summer Game Fest right here .

My routine for this week’s film review of “Furiosa-A Mad Max Saga ” took on new meaning as its own legacy run, down the gauntlet of Park City’s fury road, SR224, to visit the Redstone 8 Theater one last time. My war rig was immediately intercepted by angry commuters, parent Ubers, and swarming High Valley transit vans. Despite the reduced ticket pricing of Bargain Tuesday, the theater mirrored director George Miller’s post-apocalyptic landscape - a wasteland. Greeted by three lonely mutants, faces scarred by boredom, popcorn oil and lack of hope, I navigate the lobby emptiness to the ticket counter where a young man snarls “sit wherever you want, you have a theater for one.”
“Furiosa” is not the end but a beginning. A prequel to Miller’s wildly successful “Mad Max ” franchise, set prior to 2015’s “Fury Road,” which was a wildly successful comeback for Miller earning ten Academy Award nominations and winning six. The franchise’s cars have burned rubber for over five decades since Mel Gibson debuted his leather pants and supercharged V8 Interceptor. “Furiosa” stars Anya Taylor-Joy and her bright eyes as we learn Furiosa’s origin story as a driver of the infamous War Rig.
Miller wastes no time getting to the action with an impressive opening sequence which captures the intersection of hope and despair of Furiosa’s upbringing in a hidden oasis, only to be captured by marauding gang members. The consequence of the sequence seeds Furiosa’s future rage, desperation for survival and ultimately revenge. Chris Hemsworth brings new blood to the franchise’s long list of crazy villains, as he dons his best Tom Hardy impression to play a wasteland warlord who initially captures Furiosa and bargains her for a piece of the limited resource sanctuaries left to the surviving humanity.
The film easily could have wallowed in redundancy, ripping off prior installments, but Miller brings a freshness to the story line not unlike the positioning of “Rogue One” in the Star Wars franchise. The characters are stripped down to their bare essence and there is little question regarding their fate, but Miller captures the irresistible intrigue in witnessing humanity’s will for perseverance. Anya Taylor-Joy is riveting as Furiosa and more than matches the intensity of the franchise’s prior stars.
So, on my Black Diamond ski trail rating system, “Furiosa” earns my top BLACK DIAMOND ski trail rating. Miller delivers his typical adrenaline-fueled wasteland battles, choreographing circus-like vehicular acrobats as Furiosa helm’s the trademark War Rig on numerous runs down Fury Road’s gauntlet.
While the action sequences do not match the intensity of “Fury Road,” the director’s investment in framing Furiosa’s human perspective produces Miller’s most complete film since the original “Mad Max.” Like Furiosa, as I turn onto SR224’s fury road to return home grasping the seed of the Larry H. Miller group’s promise of a new theater of abundance, my hope is shattered by a near miss as someone runs a red light. Max’s quote from “Fury Road ” crashes upon me: “You know, hope is a mistake. If you can't fix what's broken, you'll, uh... you'll go insane.” “Furiosa” may have been the beginning, but it is the end of hope.
“Furiosa” is playing in various Salt Lake theaters with a run time of two hours 28-minutes and the film is rated R for strong violence, grisly images and intense forms of road rash.

If you'd like to become a reviewer for the track, or recommend someone, please use this form .
The Datasets and Benchmarks track serves as a venue for high-quality publications, talks, and posters on highly valuable machine learning datasets and benchmarks, as well as a forum for discussions on how to improve dataset development. Datasets and benchmarks are crucial for the development of machine learning methods, but also require their own publishing and reviewing guidelines. For instance, datasets can often not be reviewed in a double-blind fashion, and hence full anonymization will not be required. On the other hand, they do require additional specific checks, such as a proper description of how the data was collected, whether they show intrinsic bias, and whether they will remain accessible. The Datasets and Benchmarks track is proud to support the open source movement by encouraging submissions of open-source libraries and tools that enable or accelerate ML research.
The previous editions of the Datasets and Benchmarks track were highly successful; you can view the accepted papers from 2021 , 2002 , and 2023 , and the winners of the best paper awards 2021 , 2022 and 2023
CRITERIA. W e are aiming for an equally stringent review as the main conference, yet better suited to datasets and benchmarks. Submissions to this track will be reviewed according to a set of criteria and best practices specifically designed for datasets and benchmarks , as described below. A key criterion is accessibility: datasets should be available and accessible , i.e. the data can be found and obtained without a personal request to the PI, and any required code should be open source. We encourage the authors to use Croissant format ( https://mlcommons.org/working-groups/data/croissant/ ) to document their datasets in machine readable way. Next to a scientific paper, authors should also submit supplementary materials such as detail on how the data was collected and organised, what kind of information it contains, how it should be used ethically and responsibly, as well as how it will be made available and maintained.
RELATIONSHIP TO NeurIPS. Submissions to the track will be part of the main NeurIPS conference , presented alongside the main conference papers. Accepted papers will be officially published in the NeurIPS proceedings .
SUBMISSIONS. There will be one deadline this year. It is also still possible to submit datasets and benchmarks to the main conference (under the usual review process), but dual submission to both is not allowed (unless you retracted your paper from the main conference). We also cannot transfer papers from the main track to the D&B track. Authors can choose to submit either single-blind or double-blind . If it is possible to properly review the submission double-blind, i.e., reviewers do not need access to non-anonymous repositories to review the work, then authors can also choose to submit the work anonymously. Papers will not be publicly visible during the review process. Only accepted papers will become visible afterward. The reviews themselves are not visible during the review phase but will be published after decisions have been made. The datasets themselves should be accessible to reviewers but can be publicly released at a later date (see below). New authors cannot be added after the abstract deadline and they should have an OpenReview profile by the paper deadline. NeurIPS does not tolerate any collusion whereby authors secretly cooperate with reviewers, ACs or SACs to obtain favourable reviews.
SCOPE. This track welcomes all work on data-centric machine learning research (DMLR) and open-source libraries and tools that enable or accelerate ML research, covering ML datasets and benchmarks as well as algorithms, tools, methods, and analyses for working with ML data. This includes but is not limited to:
Read our original blog post for more about why we started this track.
Note: The site will start accepting submissions on April 1 5 , 2024.
Q: My work is in scope for this track but possibly also for the main conference. Where should I submit it?
A: This is ultimately your choice. Consider the main contribution of the submission and how it should be reviewed. If the main contribution is a new dataset, benchmark, or other work that falls into the scope of the track (see above), then it is ideally reviewed accordingly. As discussed in our blog post, the reviewing procedures of the main conference are focused on algorithmic advances, analysis, and applications, while the reviewing in this track is equally stringent but designed to properly assess datasets and benchmarks. Other, more practical considerations are that this track allows single-blind reviewing (since anonymization is often impossible for hosted datasets) and intended audience, i.e., make your work more visible for people looking for datasets and benchmarks.
Q: How will paper accepted to this track be cited?
A: Accepted papers will appear as part of the official NeurIPS proceedings.
Q: Do I need to submit an abstract beforehand?
A: Yes, please check the important dates section for more information.
Q: My dataset requires open credentialized access. Can I submit to this track?
A: This will be possible on the condition that a credentialization is necessary for the public good (e.g. because of ethically sensitive medical data), and that an established credentialization procedure is in place that is 1) open to a large section of the public, 2) provides rapid response and access to the data, and 3) is guaranteed to be maintained for many years. A good example here is PhysioNet Credentialing, where users must first understand how to handle data with human subjects, yet is open to anyone who has learned and agrees with the rules. This should be seen as an exceptional measure, and NOT as a way to limit access to data for other reasons (e.g. to shield data behind a Data Transfer Agreement). Misuse would be grounds for desk rejection. During submission, you can indicate that your dataset involves open credentialized access, in which case the necessity, openness, and efficiency of the credentialization process itself will also be checked.
A submission consists of:
Use of Large Language Models (LLMs): We welcome authors to use any tool that is suitable for preparing high-quality papers and research. However, we ask authors to keep in mind two important criteria. First, we expect papers to fully describe their methodology, and any tool that is important to that methodology, including the use of LLMs, should be described also. For example, authors should mention tools (including LLMs) that were used for data processing or filtering, visualization, facilitating or running experiments, and proving theorems. It may also be advisable to describe the use of LLMs in implementing the method (if this corresponds to an important, original, or non-standard component of the approach). Second, authors are responsible for the entire content of the paper, including all text and figures, so while authors are welcome to use any tool they wish for writing the paper, they must ensure that all text is correct and original.
Reviewing will be single-blind, although authors can also submit anonymously if the submission allows that. A datasets and benchmarks program committee will be formed, consisting of experts on machine learning, dataset curation, and ethics. We will ensure diversity in the program committee, both in terms of background as well as technical expertise (e.g., data, ML, data ethics, social science expertise). Each paper will be reviewed by the members of the committee. In select cases where ethical concerns are flagged by reviewers, an ethics review may be performed as well.
Papers will not be publicly visible during the review process. Only accepted papers will become visible afterward. The reviews themselves are also not visible during the review phase but will be published after decisions have been made. Authors can choose to keep the datasets themselves hidden until a later release date, as long as reviewers have access.
The factors that will be considered when evaluating papers include:
The following committee will provide advice on the organization of the track over the coming years: Sergio Escalera, Isabelle Guyon, Neil Lawrence, Dina Machuve, Olga Russakovsky, Joaquin Vanschoren, Serena Yeung.
Lora Aroyo, Google Francesco Locatello, Institute of Science and Technology Austria Lingjuan Lyu, Sony AI

The former president and his backers aim to strengthen the power of the White House and limit the independence of federal agencies.

Donald J. Trump and his allies are planning a sweeping expansion of presidential power over the machinery of government if voters return him to the White House in 2025, reshaping the structure of the executive branch to concentrate far greater authority directly in his hands.
Their plans to centralize more power in the Oval Office stretch far beyond the former president’s recent remarks that he would order a criminal investigation into his political rival, President Biden, signaling his intent to end the post-Watergate norm of Justice Department independence from White House political control.
Mr. Trump and his associates have a broader goal: to alter the balance of power by increasing the president’s authority over every part of the federal government that now operates, by either law or tradition, with any measure of independence from political interference by the White House, according to a review of his campaign policy proposals and interviews with people close to him.
Mr. Trump intends to bring independent agencies — like the Federal Communications Commission, which makes and enforces rules for television and internet companies, and the Federal Trade Commission, which enforces various antitrust and other consumer protection rules against businesses — under direct presidential control.
He wants to revive the practice of “impounding” funds, refusing to spend money Congress has appropriated for programs a president doesn’t like — a tactic that lawmakers banned under President Richard Nixon.
He intends to strip employment protections from tens of thousands of career civil servants, making it easier to replace them if they are deemed obstacles to his agenda. And he plans to scour the intelligence agencies, the State Department and the defense bureaucracies to remove officials he has vilified as “the sick political class that hates our country.”
