Choosing a topic can be a daunting task! Try choosing something that's meaningful to you. That will make the research and writing process feel less like work and more like a discovery process.

The Opposing Viewpoints in Context database has a list of dozens of current trends and issues that you can consider choosing from. Once you're in the database, just look for the "Browse Issues" tab on the upper left-hand side of the homepage to view the issues.

Use AND, OR, NOT in Your Search

Add the terms AND , OR , and NOT when you want to link more than one search word together -- or exclude certain words from your search. These are known as Boolean operators.

Shorten Your Search Terms (Truncation)

If you are searching for a word that can be spelled different ways (or if you aren't sure of the spelling) you can "truncate" (shorten) your search term so the system knows to look for multiple version of the word.

Use Quotes to Search for a Phrase

Add quotes around multiple search terms to find results that include a specific phrase. The results will only show items that include the whole phrase.

Use Advanced Search

Using the advanced search lets you select search options to create a more specific search.

When writing a research paper, you must always aim to give credit where it is due.

Whether using a direct quote, paraphrasing, or summarizing a thought, if it is not your original idea, then you need to tell your reader where you found it or else you run the risk of plagiarizing, which is a form of stealing. Find out more about plagiarism at www.plagiarism.org.

To avoid plagiarism, you need to cite your sources, and while a few different formatting styles exist, the one to use for this assignment is the American Psychological Association's (APA). You can read more about how to utilize and incorporate APA formatting into your papers in the APA section of this guide.

With an argumentative essay, an important skill is to learn how to use sources you may disagree with to help support your own argument. A great persuasive essay can acknowledge the opposite side of the issue, and explain to the reader why it is wrong or flawed.

The library has a resource called   Opposing Viewpoints (Gale in Context)  that is perfect for finding essays and articles written in a persuasive way. You can click here to connect directly, or choose  Opposing Viewpoints (Gale in Context) from our list of Popular Databases .

Here are two ways to use this database:

  • Browse Issues : If you look on the right-hand side of the Opposing Viewpoints homepage, there is a light bulb that says Browse Issues . Click on the light bulb to see a large list of topics from a variety of subjects. If you click on the drop-down menu at the top of the page, you can narrow down the type of topic you might be interested in (business, politics, etc.). Once you click on a topic, you will see a brief overview and sources organized by type of source. The Featured Viewpoints  and  Viewpoints  are argumentative essays written for or against an aspect of your topic,  and will probably be the most useful for this assignment.
  • Search : In the upper left-hand corner of the main page, there is a search box. Choose 2-3 keywords that best describe your topic and type them into the search box. You may see phrases suggested to you as you type; any phrase in  bold  means there is already a collection of sources compiled for your topic - choose that! If not, go ahead and hit search. You will see a results page organized by type of source. Be sure to click on  Viewpoints  to see  argumentative essays written for or against an aspect of your topic. You can choose any type of source you like, but  Viewpoints  will probably be the most useful source type for this assignment.
