My Uncle’s Experience

In January 2020, my uncle started to consult a nutritionist for a balanced diet plan in order to lose some weight as he was getting obese and started to accumulate a number of diseases. The nutritionist gave him a diet plan, which was designed in such a way that it only had good fats, high protein, the right amounts of carbohydrates and proper meals at all times. The plan only had foods that could be prepared at home and were not expensive. After following the diet plan for about a month, and regularly exercising, he lost about 12 kg, which was highly surprising for everyone. He was living a healthy life, with good habits, and great body health. It came to me as a shock how changes in our daily food routine and making our diet a healthy and balanced diet, can bring up so many benefits in one’s life.

The food which we eat during the whole day is called our diet. For growth and maintenance of good health, our diet should have all the nutrients that our body needs, in right quantities. Not too much of one and not too little of the other.

The diet which contains adequate amount of all nutrients such as carbohydrates, fats, proteins ,vitamins, minerals is called a balanced diet.

A balanced diet also contains sufficient amount of water and roughage.

No single food item can provide us all the essential nutrients in adequate amount.

In order to make a balanced diet ,we should include a number of different food items in our daily meals which taken together ,provide us all nutrients in adequate amount.

A balanced diet depends on the age of the person and also on the occupation of the person.

Dependence of Diet on Age

A balanced diet of a child is different from that of a grown up man.

A growing child needs more protein in his diet than a grown up man.A growing child also needs more minerals like calcium and phosphorus for the formation of bones.

Dependence of Diet on Occupation

The balanced diet of a man doing hard physical work is different from another man doing normal work.

A man doing hard physical work needs more carbohydrates in his diet than another man doing normal work. This is because he needs more energy for doing hard physical work ,and this extra energy is supplied by including more of carbohydrate rich foods in his diet.

A balanced diet should contain contain enough food items such as:

1 Cereals, potatoes, sugar (to provide carbohydrates )

2 Butter, ghee, oil (to provide fats)

3 Pulses ,peas, milk, cheese, fish ,meat ,eggs( to provide proteins )

4 Vegetables and fruits (vitamins, minerals and roughage)

Avoid wasteful Pre-cooking and cooking practices

The raw food material are washed, peeled, cut and cooked to make them fit for eating. The various wasteful pre-cooking practices lead the loss of nutrients are:

1 Repeated washing of rice and pulses removes the water soluble vitamins and some minerals from them and hence lowers the nutritive value.

2 Washing of fruits and vegetables after they have been peeled and cut, remove the water soluble vitamins and some minerals.

3 Taking off thick peels from fruits and vegetables lead to loss of vitamins and minerals.

The various wasteful cooking practices leads to loss of nutrients are

1 Cooking the food at high temperature.

2 Throwing away water in which food is boiled.

Cooking improves the taste of food and makes it easier to digest. At the same time, cooking also results in the loss of certain nutrients. Many useful proteins and considerable amounts of minerals are lost if excess water is used during cooking and is then thrown away.

Diseases due to Deficiency of Carbohydrates: Carbohydrates are the chief sources of energy for the body. This energy is used by the body for performing various functions. Components of Food Class 6 Notes - Chapter 2

According to the CBSE Syllabus 2023-24, this chapter has been renumbered as Chapter 1.

We eat different types of vegetables, fruits, cereals and pulses. We all eat food to obtain energy for our daily activities. There are different components of food and each of these components is required by our body to perform different cellular activities.

What Do Different Food Items Contain?

Food is a basic requirement for all living organisms. It provides energy for carrying out normal physiological activities. There are different components and they have different nutrients. They all come together to provide wholesome nourishment to us.

For Example:

  • Dal, eggs, meat etc contain proteins.
  • Fruits and vegetables contain vitamins.
  • Cereals, pulses, and oats contain predominantly carbohydrates.
  • Oil, ghee, butter, cheese, pork, chocolates, lard and cream contains fat.

What Do Various Nutrients Do for Our Body?

Carbohydrates.

Carbohydrates are present mostly as starch. They provide us with energy and are thus energy-giving food.

Wheat, Potato, Rice etc. are good sources of carbohydrates.

Iodine Test for Carbohydrates

Carbohydrates present in all food items are tested by the Iodine test. A few drops of dilute iodine solution are added to the sample food item. If the colour changes from brown to blue-black, the presence of starch is confirmed.

Proteins are bodybuilding nutrients. They are needed to build every single part and organ of the body. They help in the growth and repair of our body.

Eggs, Meat, Lentils etc are good sources of proteins.

Test for Proteins

Proteins in the food sample are tested by copper sulfate and caustic soda solutions. The sample food item is made into very dilute paste and the above solutions are added to it. If the colour of the resulting solution changes to purple, the presence of protein is confirmed.

Fats are high-energy nutrients. They are needed in a moderate amount by the body. Fats are the reserved food material of our body.

Oils, ghee, butter etc are the sources of fat.

Fats in the food are tested by a simple paper test. A little amount of sample food is wrapped in a paper and crushed. If the paper gets an oily patch, the presence of fat in the food is confirmed.

  • Humans cannot use fibres as a nutrient.
  • But they help in the easy movement of the food along with the digestive system.
