20 Math Critical Thinking Questions to Ask in Class Tomorrow

The level of apathy towards math is only increasing as each year passes and it’s up to us as teachers to make math class more meaningful . This list of math critical thinking questions will give you a quick starting point for getting your students to think deeper about any concept or problem. 

Since artificial intelligence has basically changed schooling as we once knew it, I’ve seen a lot of districts and teachers looking for ways to lean into AI rather than run from it.

The idea of memorizing formulas and regurgitating information for a test is becoming more obsolete. We can now teach our students how to use their resources to make educated decisions and solve more complex problems.

With that in mind, teachers have more opportunities to get their students thinking about the why rather than the how.

What skills do we actually want to teach our students?

As professionals, we talk a lot about transferable skills that can be valuable in multiple jobs, such as leadership, event planning, or effective communication. The same can be said for high school students. 

It’s important to think about the skills that we want them to have before they are catapulted into the adult world. 

Do you want them to be able to collaborate and communicate effectively with their peers? Maybe you would prefer that they can articulate their thoughts in a way that makes sense to someone who knows nothing about the topic.

Whatever you decide are the most essential skills your students should learn, make sure to add them into your lesson objectives.

When should I ask these math critical thinking questions?

Critical thinking doesn’t have to be complex or fill an entire lesson. There are simple ways that you can start adding these types of questions into your lessons daily!

Start small

Add specific math critical thinking questions to your warm up or exit ticket routine. This is a great way to start or end your class because your students will be able to quickly show you what they understand. 

Asking deeper questions at the beginning of your class can end up leading to really great discussions and get your students talking about math.

Add critical thinking questions to word problems

Word problems and real-life applications are the perfect place to add in critical thinking questions. Real-world applications offer a more choose-your-own-adventure style assignment where your students can expand on their thought processes. 

They also allow your students to get creative and think outside of the box. These problem-solving skills play a critical role in helping your students develop critical thinking abilities.

When you want your students to defend their answers.

• Explain the steps you took to solve this problem
• How do you know that your answer is correct?
• Draw a diagram to prove your solution.
• Is there a different way to solve this problem besides the one you used?
• How would you explain _______________ to a student in the grade below you?
• Why does this strategy work?
• Use evidence from the problem/data to defend your answer in complete sentences.

When you want your students to justify their opinions

• What do you think will happen when ______?
• Do you agree/disagree with _______?
• What are the similarities and differences between ________ and __________?
• What suggestions would you give to this student?
• What is the most efficient way to solve this problem?
• How did you decide on your first step for solving this problem?

When you want your students to think outside of the box

• How can ______________ be used in the real world?
• What might be a common error that a student could make when solving this problem?

• What examples can you think of that would not work with this problem solving method?

Let’s Recap:

• Rather than running from AI, help your students use it as a tool to expand their thinking.
• Identify a few transferable skills that you want your students to learn and make a goal for how you can help them develop these skills.

4. The detectives found this number pattern as part of the code on a keypad to unlock a vault. 27, 26, 24, 23, 21, __, __. What are the last two numbers they should punch in?

5. Tom’s bicycle cost $50 more than Bob’s bicycle. Bob’s bicycle cost $180. How much did Tom’s bicycle cost?

6. Randy bought 2 baseball hats for $5.25 each. He also bought 2 wrist bands for $2.50 each. How much money did he spend?

9. Luis was setting up his new office. He bought a new computer for $350. He also bought a printer for $99 and two ink cartridges for $37 each. How much did he spend?

10. There was a big sale at the Super Duper Shoe Store for 3 days. They sold 87 pairs of shoes on Friday, 95 pairs of shoes on Saturday, and 83 pairs of shoes on Sunday. How many pairs of shoes were sold all together?

11. Pia had a huge sticker collection. She had 280 stickers. Her friend, Jen, had 155 stickers in her collection. How many more stickers did Pia have than Jen?

12. Robyn scored a total of 155 points in basketball this season for the Tarrytown Tigers. She had 30 rebounds as well. Last season she scored 106 points. How many more points did she score this season than last season?

13. John went to lunch at the Cool Cat Cafe. He spent $1.25 on a juice drink and $5.50 on a sandwich. He also bought a brownie for 99 cents. He gave the cashier a $20 bill. How much change did he get?

14. Race Car Ralph drove 1,000 miles in the big cross-country auto race. 775 of those miles were with his dog, Speedy, in the car. The rest of the way, he drove alone. How many miles did Ralph drive without Speedy?

15. Best Baked Bakery baked 10,250 holiday cookies. They sold almost all of them. Only 56 were left. How many holiday cookies did they sell?

16. There were 3 cats and 4 geese in the barnyard. How many total legs were there?

17. Donna picks 5 apples every minute in the orchard. How many apples does she pick in 20 minutes?

18. Morris the magician pulled 2 doves out of his hat, twice as many rabbits as doves, and 4 times as many mice as rabbits. How many animals did he pull out of his hat?

19. Tina is making pizzas for 15 guests. If each person (including Tina) is expected to eat 2 slices, how many 8-slice pizzas should Tina make?

20. Chef Charlie is decorating a birthday cake with a circle of berries. He has 6 strawberries and would like to put 5 blueberries between each strawberry. How many blueberries does he need?

22. To make a winter stew, Jamal needs 3 pounds of sweet potatoes. If they cost $1.29 per pound, what will it cost to buy enough sweet potatoes?

22. The Hotel Swanky has 10 floors. Each floor has 16 guest rooms. There is also a ballroom, two meeting rooms, and a restaurant. How many guest rooms are in the hotel?

23. Mrs. Mason got a new bookcase for the library and filled it with books. There were 6 shelves. The top two shelves had 50 books on each shelf. The bottom four shelves had 75 books on each shelf. How many books were there in the new bookcase?

24. The cafeteria ordered 6 packs of jumbo chocolate chip cookies and 3 packs of brownies. Each pack of cookies had 12 cookies in it. They sold 45 cookies and 30 brownies. How many cookies are left?

25. The new elementary school has 30 desks in each classroom. There are four classrooms for each grade. There are 5 grades in the school. How many desks are there in the school?

26. Gina planted six rows of carrots in her garden. Each row had 30 carrots. Rabbits ate half of her carrots. How many carrots did she have left?

27. Jack planted a magic bean. The bean plant that grew was 1 foot tall on the first day. Then it doubled in height each day. How tall was the plant on the fifth day?

28. Big Brain University bought 15 new supercomputers and 50 printers. Each supercomputer cost $5,300. A printer cost $100. How much did the university spend buying new computers?

29. The new golf course had 3 tournaments every month this year. The course is open 12 months a year. Each tournament was limited to 101 golfers and was full. How many golfers played in the tournaments all together this year?

30. The school office printer can print 200 pages every 10 minutes. If the printer runs for an hour straight, how many pages can it print?

31. Lucia makes beaded bracelets. Each bracelet has 12 beads on it. She made 55 bracelets for each of the school fairs. The school had 3 fairs. How many bracelets did Lucia make?

32. Sammy Speedball is a pitcher for the Boogaloo Bearcats. He practiced his pitching on Saturday for an hour in the morning and an hour after dinner. He threw 20 pitches every 30 minutes. How many practice pitches did Sammy throw on Saturday?

33. Serena had 35 cherries. She gave 8 to each of her sisters. She still has 3 left over. How many sisters does Serena have?

34. The new teacher was giving out pencils to her class for the year. She wanted to give them out evenly. She had 15 packs of pencils with 10 pencils in each pack. She had 20 students. How many pencils should each student get? How many pencils would be left over?

35. 150 kids signed up for the summer soccer league. There are going to be ten teams, and the Dragons are one of the teams. Each team has 3 coaches and they want an equal number of players on each team. How many players should be on the Dragons?

36. the wonderful widget company produces 480 widgets every day. they have 6 widget making machines running every day, with each machine making equal amounts of widgets. the company runs six days a week. how many widgets does each machine make.

37. Farmer Fran has 35 hens. Each hen lays a dozen eggs a day. Fran packs the eggs into packs of ten. How many packs of eggs does she pack per day?

38. ReadOn Publishers gives free books to schools every year on the last day of the year. They have 900 books for this year’s giveaway. 18 schools have applied for the free books. How many should each school get if they are evenly distributed?

39. Coach Cindy is meeting with each player for practice individually. Each player will get 15 minutes with the coach. Coach Cindy has 2 hours for this on Saturday. How many players can she meet with?

40. Dr. Bea Well has 120 patients. ¼ of them wear glasses. How many of her patients don’t wear glasses?

41. Lucy has 24 stuffed animals. She loves elephants, and one-third of her stuffed animals are elephants. Half of the elephants are gray. How many elephants does she have?

42. Annie collects seashells. She has 120 shells in her collection. They are from both the Atlantic Ocean and the Pacific Ocean. ¾ of the shells are from the Atlantic Ocean. How many shells are from the Pacific Ocean?

43. Bill has 7/8 of his homework done. Andy has 9/10 of his homework done. They have the same amount of homework. Who has more homework done?

44. Jose was offered 2/5 of a jumbo chocolate bar or 3/6 of the same bar. He loves chocolate. Which should he choose if he wants the most chocolate?

45. Janelle has 6 notebooks for school. Donnie has 1/3 more than Janelle. How many notebooks do Janelle and Donnie have all together?

46. Tonya found two small interesting stones. The black one weighs 0.3 of an ounce. The red one weighs 0.09 of an ounce. Which stone weighs more?

47. Leah has a baseball bat that is 2 and a half feet long. Bryson has a bat that is 28 inches long and another one that is 2 feet and 5 inches long. Who has the longest bat?

48. Mr. Smith’s class collected coins in a big jar for 6 months. Their coins weighed 2 pounds and 8 ounces. Ms. Smith’s class did the same thing. Their coins weighed 2 ½ pounds. Whose coins weighed more?

How To Encourage Critical Thinking in Math

Critical thinking is more than just a buzzword… It’s an essential skill that helps students develop problem-solving abilities and make logical connections between different concepts. By encouraging critical thinking in math, students learn to approach problems more thoughtfully, they learn to analyze and evaluate math concepts, identify patterns and relationships, and explore different strategies for finding the solution. Critical thinking also involves a great deal of persistence. Those are critical life skills!

When you think about it, students are typically asked to solve math problems and find the answer. Showing their work is frequently stressed too, which is important, but not the end. Instead, students need to be able to look at math in different ways in order to truly grasp a complete understanding of math concepts. Mathematics requires logical reasoning, problem-solving, and abstract thinking.

What Does Critical Thinking in Math Look Like?

When I think about critical thinking in math, I focus on:

• Solving problems through logical thinking . Students learn how to break down complex problems, analyze the different parts, and understand how they fit together logically.
• Identifying patterns and making connections. Students learn how to identify patterns across different math concepts, make connections between seemingly unrelated topics, and develop a more in-depth understanding of how math works.
• Evaluating and comparing solutions. Students learn to evaluate which solution is best for a given problem and identify any flaws in their reasoning or others’ reasoning when looking at different solutions

Mathematician Posters

These FREE Marvelous Mathematician posters have been a staple in my classroom for the last 8+ years! I first started using a version from MissMathDork and adapted them for my classroom over the years. 

I print, laminate, and add magnetic stickers on the back. At the beginning of the year, I only put one or two up at a time depending on our area of focus. Now, they are all hanging on my board, and I’ll pull out different ones depending on our area of focus. They are so empowering to my mathematicians and help them stay on track!

A Marvelous Mathematician:

• knows that quicker doesn’t mean better
• looks for patterns
• knows mistakes happen and keeps going
• makes sense of the most important details
• embraces challenges and works through frustrations
• uses proper math vocabulary to explain their thinking
• shows their work and models their thinking
• discusses solutions and evaluates reasonableness
• gives context by labeling answers
• applies mathematical knowledge to similar situations
• checks for errors (computational and conceptual)

Critical Thinking Math Activities

Here are a few of my favorite critical thinking activities. 

Square Of Numbers

I love to incorporate challenge problems (use Nrich and Openmiddle to get started) because they teach my students so much more than how to solve a math problem. They learn important lessons in teamwork, persistence, resiliency, and growth mindset. We talk about strategies for tackling difficult problems and the importance of not giving up when things get hard.

This square of numbers challenge was a hit!

ALL kids need to feel and learn to embrace challenge. Oftentimes, kids I see have rarely faced an academic challenge. Things have just come easy to them, so when it doesn’t, they can lack strategies that will help them. In fact, they will often give up before they even get started.

I tell them it’s my job to make sure I’m helping them stretch and grow their brain by giving them challenges. They don’t love it at first, but they eventually do! 

This domino challenge was another one from Nrich . I’m always on the hunt for problems like this!!  How would you guide students toward an answer??

Fifteen Cards

This is a well-loved math puzzle with my students, and it’s amazing for encouraging students to consider all options when solving a math problem.

We have number cards 1-15 (one of each number) and only seven are laid out. With the given clues, students need to figure out which seven cards should be put out and in what order. My students love these, and after they’ve done a few, they enjoy creating their own, too! Use products, differences, and quotients to increase the challenge.

This is also adapted from Nrich, which is an AMAZING resource for math enrichment!

This is one of my favorite fraction lessons that I’ve done for years! Huge shout out to Meg from The Teacher Studio for this one. I give each child a slip of paper with this figure and they have to silently write their answer and justification. Then I tally up the answers and have students take a side and DEBATE with their reasoning! It’s an AMAZING conversation, and I highly recommend trying it with your students. 

Sometimes we leave it hanging overnight and work on visual models to make some proofs. 

Logic Puzzles

Logic puzzles are always a hit too! You can enrich and extend your math lessons with these ‘Math Mystery’ logic puzzles that are the perfect challenge for 4th, 5th, and 6th grades. The puzzles are skills-based, so they integrate well with almost ANY math lesson. You can use them to supplement instruction or challenge your fast-finishers and gifted students… all while encouraging critical thinking about important math skills!

Three levels are included, so they’re perfect to use for differentiation.

• Introductory logic puzzles are great for beginners (4th grade and up!)
• Advanced logic puzzles are great for students needing an extra challenge
• Extra Advanced logic puzzles are perfect for expert solvers… we dare you to figure these puzzles out! 

Do you have a group of students who are ready for more of a fraction challenge? My well-loved fraction puzzlers are absolutely perfect for fraction enrichment. They’ll motivate your students to excel at even the most challenging tasks! 

Math Projects

Math projects are another way to differentiation while building critical thinking skills. Math projects hold so much learning power with their real-world connections, differentiation options, collaborative learning opportunities, and numerous avenues for cross curricular learning too. 

If you’re new to math projects, I shared my best tips and tricks for using math projects in this blog post . They’re perfect for cumulative review, seasonal practice, centers, early finisher work, and more.

I use both concept-based math projects to focus on specific standards and seasonal math projects that integrate several skills.

Error Analysis

Finally, error analysis is always a challenging way to encourage critical thinking. When we use error analysis, we encourage students to analyze their own mistakes to prevent making the same mistakes in the future.

For my gifted students, I use error analysis tasks as an assessment when they have shown mastery of a unit during other tasks. For students in the regular classroom needing enrichment, I usually have them complete the tasks in a center or with a partner.

For students needing extra support, we complete error analysis in small groups.  We go step-by-step through the concept and they are always able to eventually identify what the error is. It is so empowering to students when they finally figure out the error AND it helps prevent them from making the same error in the future!

My FREE addition error analysis is a good place to start, no matter the grade level. I show them the process of walking through the problem and how best to complete an error analysis task.

55 Challenging Word Problems for 4th Graders

Introduction:

Word problems are an essential part of the 4th-grade mathematics curriculum. They help students develop their critical thinking and problem-solving skills beyond calculations, allowing them to apply math concepts to real-life situations. In this article, we’ll explore 55 challenging word problems designed specifically for 4th graders. These problems cover various topics, such as addition, subtraction, multiplication, division, fractions, and more!

1. Jane has 12 cookies. Her friend Amy gives her 8 more cookies. How many cookies does Jane have in total?

2. Tommy collects baseball cards. He has 100 cards in his collection and wants to buy 35 more to complete his set. How many cards will he have altogether?

3. A bookstore has 250 books on its shelves which are divided into fiction and non-fiction categories. If there are twice as many fiction books as non-fiction books, how many non-fiction books are there?

4. John’s dad gives him a $10 allowance each week on Thursday. If he saves all his money from Thursday to Sunday, how much money does John save in a month with four Thursdays?

5. Sarah bought a pack of pencils with 20 pencils in it. She gave some away to her friends and had only 5 left afterward. How many pencils did she give away?

6. There are 40 students in a class separated equally into four groups for group work projects. How many students are there in each group?

7. A bakery prepared 48 muffins in the morning and sold out by lunchtime. In the afternoon, they made three times as many muffins as they did in the morning. How many muffins were made in the afternoon?

8. Jenny plays on a soccer team with eight other players on weekdays only for practice except Wednesday’s break day when there is a training session, and she never misses a practice. How many total practices will Jenny attend in August if the month starts on Tuesday?

9. Billy’s book has 120 pages. He reads 15 pages per day on Monday, Tuesday, and Friday. How many days will it take Billy to finish reading the book?

10. A rope that is 90 meters long is cut into three equal pieces. What is the length of each piece?

11. Grant has five times more marbles than his brother, who has six marbles. How many marbles does Grant have?

12. Mary needs to buy 15 apples for a recipe. She buys them in packs of three, priced at $1 per pack. How much does she spend on apples?

(Note: Here are only 12 of the 55 challenging word problems to provide as an example.)

Conclusion:

Multiplication Word Problems 4th Grade Online Quiz

Multiplication word problems, 4th grade multiplication problems.

Here you will find a range of problem solving worksheets involving multiplication.

Each sheet involves solving a range of written multiplication problems.

There are 3 levels of difficulty for each worksheet below: A,B and C.

Worksheet A is the easiest level, suitable for children at the beginning of their grade.

Worksheet B is a medium level worksheets for children who are working at the expected level in their grade.

Worksheet C is set at a harder level, suitable for children who are more able mathematicians.

The problems in each worksheet are similar in wording, but the numbers involved become trickier as the level gets harder.

To encourage careful checking and thinking skills, each sheet includes one 'trick' question which is not a multiplication problem. Children need to spot this word problem, and work out which operation they need to solve it.

Using these sheets will help your child to:

• apply their multiplication and times tables skills at a 4th grade level;
• apply their times table knowledge to work out related facts;
• recognise multiplication problems, and try to spot 'trick' problems;
• solve a range of 'real life' problems.

Some of the sheets have a UK version with spelling and currency symbols set for the UK.
