'Cobra' movie review: A solid Vikram anchors a plot that goes around in circles

Hardly 15 minutes into the three-hour, three-minute, and three-second film, the film takes us to 13-odd locations. We also see a couple of high-profile assassinations take place. We move across places like Odisha, Scotland, France, London, and Kolkata, and within seven minutes of his appearance on screen, Vikram, who plays Madhi, a mathematical genius moonlighting as an assassin-for-hire, is shown in at least six different get-ups. It is clear director Ajay Gnanamuthu, much like the protagonist of his film, Cobra , loves numbers and puzzles. But in his attempt to give us a grand film that is a marriage of a clever thriller and a poignant emotional drama, Ajay falters quite a bit to give us a half-decent film that just about slithers to a tame end.

Firstly, Cobra wants to be a lot of things. However, it isn’t backed by sound writing to pull it all off. After an initial buildup about Madhi’s mathematical prowess in doing some of the most outlandish assassinations halfway across the world from his nondescript house in Chennai, we hardly see him exercise this brilliance. Yes, we see him wriggling out of some tight corners using his intellect, but we aren’t really sold on the mathematical part of it.

We have seen our fair share of Ethan Hunts, and even Agent Vikrams who have done all of it without knowing the difference between Pythagoras and Euclid. It is a shame that Ajay didn’t really flesh out this aspect of his protagonist rather than just making it a simple gimmick. This could have been forgiven if the other aspects of Cobra really came together to give us a gripping film.

The central plot of a mathematical genius/assassin meeting his match with a world-is-mine villain, an uber-smart Interpol officer, and one surprise villain does have the makings of a fun exercise… If only, the stars aligned.

Let’s take the case of the caricaturish villain, Rishi, who is played in the most outlandish of fashion by Roshan Mathew. It is a role that seems to have been modelled by Siddharth Abhimanyu and Harley Quinn. He exudes manic energy that comes across as a case of someone trying so hard that it hurts to watch because his role is all fluff and has no substance.

Irfan Pathan plays Interpol officer Aslan and is actually not bad at all, and in his case, it is nice to see someone try this hard, especially with his Tamil dialogues. Points to Ajay Gnanamuthu for giving Aslan enough high moments to ensure this role doesn’t just become another Aryan from Vivegam .

Similarly, Ajay neatly weaves the women — Srinidhi Shetty, Meenakshi Govindarajan, and Mirnalini Ravi — into the story. However, the dichotomy in the writing comes to the fore in the romance portions. While these scenes show potential, the dialogues are trite, and the performances are contrived too. These dips in the narrative take away from the highs that the assassin portions take us through.

The surprise package is definitely the roles played by Anandaraj, Muhammad Ali Baig, Miya George, and the actor who plays the childhood version of Vikram. These portions, powered by a terrific Vikram, are a hoot. It is such a relief from the other sequences that oscillate between vapid and exciting and nothing in between.

Despite whatever happens to the host of other characters or plot points in the film, there is no doubt that Cobra is only about one man… Vikram and his fascination for characters allow him to satiate his love for prosthetics.

It is a Vikram show through and through, and it is understandable why the actor felt so strongly about this film. Ajay peppers this film with a host of bright, bold, and interesting ideas, which don’t always hit the bull’s eye with their execution. AR Rahman’s background score (barring that grating pathos BGM) and solid songs aid the narrative, which jumps across timelines at the same pace that it jumps across continents.

This non-linear approach and throwing bits and pieces of information hoping that the latter half will resolve all these issues is both a hit and a miss. The plot gets unnecessarily convoluted, and the glimmers of brilliance are offset by the fillers that come in the form of romance and exposition.

With a premise like this, and a bunch of oh-so-convenient plot twists that definitely remind us of a few films, including a blockbuster Hindi film from the recent past, Cobra ticks almost all the boxes we have grown to expect from a Vikram starrer, including the disappointment of the actor being the brightest star in a rather middling film.

Cobra Movie Review: Vikram Brings Back Anniyan Level Energy

Ajay Gnanamuthu has had a short but promising career so far, with his Demonte Colony , and Imaikaa Nodigal . Cobra slides into that shelf and finds a space for itself.

Cobra is an interesting choice for the title because the male lead is as dangerous and as sneaky as a cobra. You don't see him coming and in case you do, you hardly get the time to think and react.

The mathematical genius has his vulnerable moments but he manages to solve his way out, and the writing is sincere enough to not let his plans look like a joke. There is no dearth of action in this film, which one might expect considering that the story revolves around an intellectual. This intellectual, however, is muscular and sharp enough to handle the heat.

Cobra can easily be called a tribute to the actor in Vikram. He has been offered a role with such range and depth that this could be one of his best performances. The film has been written in such a way that it would be impossible for one to not recognize the passionate actor that Vikram is.

Story And Performances

Madhi is a math teacher/assassin, who uses his revenue to sponsor orphanages and charity homes. He has a traumatic childhood and a genetic gift, and the combination naturally leaves him with some psychological issues. While battling with the dilemma of whether to accept or reject the interest shown by Bhavana, played by Srinidhi Shetty, Madhi also has to handle an Interpol officer on his trail. Meanwhile, the boss man who has been benefiting from the genius' assignments turns against him, to save his own skin.

The acting genius plays a math genius in the film, and Vikram fits into the sociopathic intellectual individual's role very well. The writing is good and it keeps its focus on its narrative and does not move away from its trajectory much. Vikram's many avatars in the film satisfy us and leave us cheering for the man. The narrative is coherent and it doesn't give room for obvious logical flaws.

Roshan Mathew as Rishi plays a maniacal youngster who has gotten intoxicated with too much power too soon in life. He brings a couple of interesting moments to the screen. Irfan Pathan plays an investigator backed by an undergrad math student minoring in criminology. The two of them have performed sufficiently and have kept the story moving.

What Worked And What Didn't

Cobra has broken some stereotypes of film-writing that we are used to. Vikram has optimally utilized a creamy role and has made yet another mark. There are sequences that work on the same level as Anniyan did for us, not in the same way, but with the same level of excitement.

The film's only shortcoming is that although it moves through its thriller narrative efficiently, there were sequences where it failed to create the necessary drama during emotional moments. There were a few moments that genuinely touched the audience, but then there were moments when one couldn't connect with the characters. Maybe the film could have leaned more toward its intellectual side than the emotional side.

The film tries to move fast initially and doesn't take time to breathe in between the scenes. It works for the most part, but it leaves us with little space to emotionally connect with the characters, which makes the latter part of the film feel a bit too long.

Technical Aspects

Although there were moments where you could notice that it's not great CG work, those moments are few and they don't really affect the experience much. The cinematography is on point, and as noted by many in the trailer, stood out in the interrogation scene. 'Thumbi Thullal' reminds us that AR Rahman is the composer.

A great watch for sure, especially if you are a fan of thrillers and suspense stories. A must-watch if you enjoy watching layered protagonists. If you are a fan of Vikram, this will definitely blow your mind.

Cobra movie review: Vikram-starrer gets predictable in the end, despite stretches of brilliance

Ajay Gnanamuthu’s Cobra is the kind of film you want to appreciate as well as find faults with. It deserves to be praised because it gives Vikram his most ambitious film in recent years, and the star has so much fun playing a role that doesn’t scream hero. For most part of the film, it’s a character that demands a restrained performance and it’s something that comes naturally to him. The reason why you want to find fault with the film is because of its needlessly stretched run-time, which gets quite tiresome after a point. A series of assassinations of some of the top leaders of the world has given sleepless nights to Turkish Interpol officer, Aslan ( Irfan Pathan ). With the help of a criminology student from Chennai, Aslan finds out that a criminal named Cobra is responsible for all the assassinations, but his identity remains a mystery. Aslan travels to Chennai to work with the local police to nab the killer. Vikram plays Mathiazhagan, a genius mathematician who lives the life of a recluse. Aslan’s investigation reveals that Cobra could also be a mathematics genius and suddenly all the clues point fingers towards Mathi, who gets involved in the case. Is Mathi really Cobra? And if yes, why is he on a killing spree? This forms the crux of the plot.

Cobra being too ambitious is both a boon as well as bane. The ambitiousness shows off in the film’s attempt to push the scale in terms of grandeur, which is visible in most of the first half. It is also visible in the writing, especially when the film uses theories from mathematics to make the crimes very interesting. Unfortunately, the stretches of brilliance are short-lived as the film does get predictable towards the end. There are instances where the film tries too hard to look ambitious, and this is also one of the reasons why the narrative after a plot twist never holds up.

The film definitely needed better casting. Apart from Vikram, who shines in yet another hand-picked, the rest of the support cast barely makes any impact. Roshan Mathew, who is generally effortless and quite convincing so far in his career, hams it up big time in a largely annoying negative role. It’s a poorly written character that turns irksome after a point.

Then, there’s former cricketer Irfan Pathan, who starts off as the lead investigating officer of the case, but slowly gets sidelined to become useless. Also, it is annoying to see actors, who have their lines dubbed in Tamil , when you clearly know their lip-sync is so off. It’s Vikram, who shoulders the film all the way.

Cobra could’ve been a far more effective thriller if it wasn’t so long. It could’ve also done away with the highly boring romantic track, which hardly helps in keeping the audiences engaged.

COBRA MOVIE REVIEW CLICK TO RATE THE MOVIE

Cobra is a Tamil action thriller written and directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu. Vikram, Srinidhi Shetty, Irfan Pathan, Roshan Mathew, Mirnalini and Meenakshi form the core cast of the film. The film is produced by S.S. Lalit Kumar under the banner Seven Screen Studio. The distribution rights were secured by Red Giant Movies.

Madhiazhagan, a Maths professor, becomes a prime suspect when Interpol officer Aslan (Irfan Pathan) draws similarities between Madhi and a criminal named Cobra.

Every film of Vikram is a specimen for his multi faceted capability and this film is no different to any other. He is simply superb in giving life to the character he portrays but that alone cannot engage a single dimensional screenplay. Srinidhi Shetty decorates the screen with her charming presence. Irfan Pathan as an Interpol officer has tried his best in the unknown foreign pitch. The entry of Roshan Mathew into Tamil movie industry hasn't been smooth as his role is overbearing at every instance. KS Ravikumar, Robo Shankar and Mia George play their short roles well.

Songs of A.R. Rahman stands out from the background score. Adheera and Thumbi Thullal provide the celebration aura in theatres. Bhuvan Srinivasan aids in limiting scenes. Harish Kannan delivers splendid visuals, especially the abroad sequences for the underwhelming script. A three hour long film is sure to face engagement issues as it is the case with Cobra.

Vikram shoulders the entire film through his usual gimmicks. If not for Vikram the film would have become a tedious watch. The stretched, convoluted and contrived screenplay barricades every other positive aspect of the film. The interval revelation tends to free the film out of its misery but then the sequences that follow makes the misery inevitable.

Ajay Gnanamuthu has tried to employ all that he learned from his mentor A.R. Murugadoss into the script which doesn't require any. The interrogation portion in the second half looks solid in the film that efficiently uses the acting prowess of Vikram. One liners of Anandaraj supplies comic relief in an average narrative.

Cobra amidst all the buzz around it misses to engage thoroughly. The script and screenplay is to be blamed for its mediocrity. After a point of time we are really not bothered by the mind games played between Madhi and Kathir. In the pursuit of unravelling the story we find ourselves entangled by it.

Vikram Is Earnest As Always But ‘Cobra’ Ties Itself Into Knots

As with most scripts actor Vikram is drawn to, a lack of effort or a shortage of ideas are seldom reasons why the final film ends up disappointing us. Like most of his recent films, Cobra too goes all out in all directions. It's ambitious to a fault and it's difficult to place this thriller into any one template we've seen before. Parts of it might seem derivative, but when the film's fresh ideas click into place you feel drawn to the original vision, seduced by moments of glory that deserved a better film. 

I felt the full rush of this high in a beautifully imagined surreal stretch set in St.Petersburg. It's a scene that builds up to a high-tension hit-job where Madhi (Vikram) feels trapped, moments away from getting caught. An assassin and a mathematical genius, Madhi has so far had the perfect record, succeeding in taking out every target he's been assigned. But with the Interpol closing in, he has seconds to wriggle out of a particularly sticky situation. In what the film has prepared you for until then, all you're expecting is one more clever way in which Madhi escapes. The film may also surprise you with Madhi pulling off the impossible and assassinating the target he's there for. Even with the tension building and with time running out, the director slams the brakes and chooses to take us away into a dream sequence deep within Madhi's psyche. New characters are brought to life in this dream and existing ones assume fresh meaning. With this giant leap of faith, an ordinary film about a slippery assassin suddenly turns into a story about a vulnerable man with innumerable ways to escape the police, but not one to escape his past. 

It's a surprisingly perceptive turn to take in a film you had dismissed as too over-the-top and kitschy to display any real nuance. The first hour of the film is particularly bloated and showy. In fact, the film is so quick to show off its money bags that the first 15 minutes flash you with half a dozen countries and an equal number of Vikrams. The result is dizzying, like a hundred neon lights being pointed at you. The film's world doesn't get constructed like it should have been and the motivations of the characters are far beyond us. 

Instead of detailing vital bits of information we need for the film to matter to us, Cobra goes ballistic by explaining how smart the hero is using math lectures. There's nothing sexy about the idea of a math genius in this context, but the film tries hard to connect the dots to make it look cool. To make this point, the writers use the assassination of a CM as a full display of genius. But when his modus operandi is finally revealed, what surprises you is hardly his mathematical ability. What I was fascinated by was his perfect aim and his ability to walk in so easily into a high-security event. And even if you're willing to suspend disbelief in these scenes, I kept calculating how much more money Madhi could have made doing makeup tutorials on Instagram rather than working as a part-time assassin. 

And because his motivations are unclear, we don't even know why he's risking so much and the impact his money is generating (we get a shot of him giving it all to charity). It's also unclear why hipster billionaire Rishi (an unhinged Roshan Mathew) would risk so much to tackle an issue he could easily have dealt with using other means. 

Which is to say you're really caught off-guard when the film surprises you pleasantly with the aforementioned dream sequence. When seen along with a corresponding scene in the second half (the film's highlight), one can only imagine what could have been had the film chosen to stick to this particular conceit rather than stuffing itself with a dozen more. And when you're working with an actor like Vikram who can pretty much do everything, the challenge is often knowing when to stop. 

But such moments of brilliance are too distant and isolated to hold together a three-hour film. And when the film chooses to take a path that begins at the interval twist, you're once again taken back to the stretch at the start where the film expects you to be wowed by twists alone. This is also where it turns into a convoluted mess with so much back and forth that finally, we stop caring. The action scenes have nothing new to offer and even AR Rahman's score can only soften the blow when the film moves from one far-fetched sequence to another.

Eventually, it's these disjointed ideas that leave you most disappointed. It's one thing to feel bad after watching a movie that has nothing going for it at all, but with Cobra , you come so close to moments of ingenuity that you just want to watch the movie that was in the director's head. And when you see Vikram perform so earnestly through a series of disjointed stretches, you feel so bad for the actor who is constantly let down by the films he chooses. Ever since Anniyan , the solution to fix every Vikram film seems to be to add even more Vikrams to the script. With Cobra too following this principle, it's perhaps time to ask how many Vikrams are too much in one film.

ALL ABOUT COBRA

Cobra is an action-thriller that features Vikram in nearly 20 different looks. The cast includes Srinidhi Shetty — who emerged as a star with her work in the Yash's KGF franchise — Miya George, Roshan Mathew, Sarjano Khalid, and Mirnalini Ravi, among others. Former Indian cricketer Irfan Pathan plays the antagonist in Cobra, which marks his acting debut. . The flick has apparently been filmed on a budget of Rs 90 crore. It will be distributed by Red Giant Movies, the banner behind films such as the Ajith Kumar-led action thriller Mankatha, the Rajinikanth-starrer Annaatthe, and Sivakarthikeyan's Don. Cobra is set to hit the screens, in Tamil and Telugu, on August 31.

Ciyaan Vikram, meanwhile, is going through a busy phase on the work front. The I star will be seen in a regal avatar in Mani Ratnam's Ponniyin Selvan, slated to open in theatres on September 30. ஸ்காட்லாந்தில் ஒரு இளவரசர் கொல்லப்படுகிறார். இந்தியாவில் ஒரு பெரிய அரசியல்வாதி கொல்லப்படுகிறார். இப்படி ஒவ்வொரு நாட்டிலும் ஒரு ஹை புரொஃபைல் கொலைகள் நடைபெறும் நிலையில், அதை கண்டுபிடிக்க இன்டர்போல் அதிகாரியாக அஸ்லான் (இர்ஃபான் பதான்) குற்றவாளியை கண்டுபிடிக்க முயற்சி செய்கிறார். அப்படியே கட் பண்ணா சாதாரண கணக்கு வாத்தியாராக வாழ்ந்து கொண்டிருக்கும் மதியழகனை (விக்ரம்) கேஜிஎஃப் ஹீரோயின் ஸ்ரீநிதி ஷெட்டி துரத்தி துரத்திக் காதலிக்கிறார். கணக்கு வாத்தியார் ஏன் இதுபோன்ற பெரிய கொலைகளை செய்கிறார் அதற்கு என்ன காரணம் என்பது தான் கோப்ரா படத்தின் கதை.

சியான் விக்ரம் மிரட்டல்

படத்தில் 7, 8 கெட்டப் இருக்கு சார் என்றதுமே ஒவ்வொரு கெட்டப்புக்கும் ஒவ்வொரு விதமாக ரெடியாகி விடுவார் விக்ரம் என்பது அனைவருக்கும் தெரிந்தது தான். கோப்ரா படத்திலும் அதை கச்சிதமாக செய்து முடித்திருக்கிறார் சியான் விக்ரம். தன்னை சிறு வயதில் இருந்து வளர்த்து வரும் நெல்லயைப்பன் (கே.எஸ். ரவிக்குமார்) சொல்லும் டாஸ்க்குகளைத் தான் வேஷம் போட்டு முடித்து வருகிறார் விக்ரம். இடைவேளையில் வரும் அந்தவொரு ட்விஸ்ட் ரசிகர்களை மெய் சிலிர்க்க வைக்கிறது. எதிர்பார்க்கல சியான் விக்ரம் இப்படியொரு கம்பேக் கொடுப்பாருன்னு எதிர்பார்க்கலலன்னு சொல்ல வைக்கிறது.

பியூட்டிஃபுல் மைண்ட் மாதிரி

சியான் விக்ரமிற்கு எப்போதும் மூன்று கேரக்டர்கள் அவரை சுற்றியே இருப்பது போல காட்சிகள் அமைக்கப்பட்டு இருக்கு. ஹாலிவுட் படமான பியூட்டிஃபுல் மைண்ட் படத்தில் ஒரு கதாபாத்திரம் கூடவே அந்த கணக்கு வாத்தியாரை டார்ச்சர் செய்யும். அதே காட்சியை தனுஷின் '3' படத்திலும் வைத்திருப்பார்கள். இந்த படத்தில் ஆனந்த் ராஜ், சியான் விக்ரமின் சிறுவன் போர்ஷன், இன்னொரு ஆள் என மூவர் எப்போதுமே சுற்றி வந்து அவனுக்கு ஏகப்பட்ட ஆர்டர்களை போட்டு வருகின்றனர்.

முதல் பாதி நகர்ந்த அளவுக்கு இரண்டாம் பாதி இல்லாதது மிகப்பெரிய பின்னடைவாக மாறியுள்ளது. இரண்டாவது பாதியில் அந்த போலீஸ் ஸ்டேஷனில் அனைத்து ஆலுசினேஷன் கதாபாத்திரங்களும் விக்ரமுக்கு முன்னதாக வந்து பேசும் காட்சி கூஸ்பம்ப்ஸ் கொடுத்தாலும், அதற்கு பிறகு கணக்கு vs கம்ப்யூட்டர் என வரும் ஒரு கதை ஆரம்பத்தில் கொடுத்த சர்ப்ரைஸை கொஞ்சம் நேரம் கூட தக்க வைத்துக் கொள்ள முடியாமல் சொதப்பி எடுத்து விடுகிறது. அதிலும் அந்த கிளைமேக்ஸ் காட்சியெல்லாம் என்னடா நடக்குது ஒன்னுமே புரியலையேன்னு மண்டையை போட்டுக் குழப்புகிறது.

அஜய் ஞானமுத்துவின் ட்விஸ்ட்டுகள் நிறைந்த திரைக்கதை மற்றும் படத்துக்காக பல லைவ் லொகேஷன்களுக்கு சென்று அவர் போட்டிருக்கும் உழைப்பு தெளிவாக தெரிகிறது. சியான் விக்ரம் எந்தவொரு கெட்டப் போட்டாலும் அதில் பர்ஃபெக்ட்டாக நடித்து ஒட்டுமொத்த படத்தையும் தனது தோளில் சுமந்து நடித்துள்ளார். ஏ.ஆர். ரஹ்மானின் இசை மற்றும் காஸ்டிங் படத்திற்கு மிகப்பெரிய பலம். ஒளிப்பதிவாளர் ஹரிஷ் கண்ணனின் கேமரா மூலம் சில காட்சிகளில் ரசிகர்களின் மண்டையை குழப்புவது, புவன் ஸ்ரீனிவாசனின் எடிட்டிங் கட்ஸ் என படம் மிரட்டுகிறது. மேக்கப் மேன்களின் உழைப்பும் அளப்பரியது.

பெரிய படம் என்பதால் 3 மணி நேரத்துக்கு மேல் இழுத்து விட்டது சில இடங்களில் லேக் அடிக்க வைத்து விடுகிறது. ஃபிளாஷ்பேக் காட்சிகள் ஏற்கனவே பார்த்த மன்மதன், தடம் படத்தை நினைவுப்படுத்துகிறது. அம்மா சென்டிமென்ட் காட்சிகள் மீண்டும் கேஜிஎஃப் படத்துக்கே அழைத்துச் செல்கிறது. சில இடங்களில் லாஜிக் ஓட்டைகளை தவிர்க்க முடியாமல் இயக்குநர் இரண்டாம் பாகத்தில் திணறியுள்ளார். இப்படி பல பிர்ச்சனைகள் படத்திற்கு மைனஸாக மாறினாலும் சியான் விக்ரமின் நடிப்பு அதையெல்லாம் மறக்கடிக்க செய்கிறது. தாராளமாக கோப்ரா படத்தை ஒருமுறை தியேட்டரில் பார்க்கலாம்!

Cobra Review: விக்ரம் என்னும் மகாநடிகன்; அடடே இர்ஃபான் பதான்; ஆனால் படமாக `கோப்ரா' எப்படி?

இன்டர்வெல் ட்விஸ்ட் ஆச்சர்யம் என்றாலும், இரண்டாம் பாதியில் அந்த விசாரணை காட்சி தவிர்த்து நீண்ட நெடிய ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக் ஒன்றும் ஓடுகிறது. ஆனால், அது எந்தவித எமோஷனுமின்றி 'ஒரு தகவலுக்காக' என்கிற ரீதியிலேயே கடந்துபோகின்றது.

கணித அறிவை வைத்து தடயமே இல்லாமல் கொலைகள் செய்யும் சர்வதேச கொலைகாரனுக்கும் அவனைத் தேடும் இன்டர்போல் அதிகாரிக்கும் நடக்கும் பாம்பு - கீரி யுத்தமே இந்த `கோப்ரா'.

சர்வதேச அளவில் இறங்கி மாட்டிக்கொள்ளாமல் கொலைகள் செய்கிறார் கணித மேதையும், வாத்தியாருமான மதியழகன். ஸ்காட்லாந்தில் அரச பரம்பரையைச் சேர்ந்த ஒருவரைக் கொன்றதும், அந்த வழக்கைக் கையில் எடுக்கிறார் இன்டர்போல் அதிகாரியான அஸ்லாம். அதற்கும் தமிழ்நாட்டில் நடந்த ஒரு கொலைக்கும் தொடர்பு இருப்பதை அறிந்து இங்கே வந்து இறங்குகிறார். அவருக்கு உதவியாகக் கணிதம், கிரிமினாலாஜி என ஆராய்ச்சிப் படிப்பில் இருக்கும் மாணவி ஒருவரும் கைகொடுக்க, 'கோப்ரா' என அடைமொழி சூட்டப்பட்ட அந்த ஜீனியஸ் 'மதியழகனை' இவர்கள் நெருங்கினார்களா, அவரின் இறந்த காலம் ஒளித்து வைத்திருக்கும் ரகசியம் என்ன என்பதற்கான விடைகளை சில ட்விஸ்ட்கள் சேர்த்துச் சொல்கிறது 'கோப்ரா'.

அப்பாவி கணக்கு வாத்தியார், பல கெட்டப்கள் போட்டு சர்வதேச அளவில் கொலைகள் செய்யும் கொலைகாரன், மற்றுமொரு சர்ப்ரைஸ் (!) பேக்கேஜ் என விக்ரமின் நடிப்பு ஆர்வத்துக்கு இது மெகா சைஸ் விருந்து. ஒரு சில கெட்டப்கள் வெறும் மாறுவேடமாகத் தெரிந்தாலும், தனது உடல்மொழி மூலம் அதன் நம்பகத்தன்மையைக் கூட்டியிருக்கிறார் விக்ரம். குறிப்பாக அந்த விசாரணைக் காட்சி, மற்றுமொரு 'அந்நியன்' ஸ்டைல் ட்ரீட். அந்தக் காட்சியில் 'Inside' என்றொரு குறும்படத்தின் பாதிப்பு இருந்தாலும், விக்ரமின் தனித்துவமான நடிப்பு அதற்கு வேறொரு பரிமாணத்தைக் கொடுத்திருக்கிறது.

ஶ்ரீநிதி ஷெட்டி, மீனாட்சி கோவிந்தராஜன், மிர்ணாளினி ரவி என மூன்று முக்கிய பெண் கதாபாத்திரங்கள். ஆனால், மீனாட்சி மற்றும் மிர்ணாளினியின் பாத்திரங்கள் கதையோடு ஒன்றிய அளவிற்கு ஶ்ரீநிதியின் பாத்திரம் அமையவில்லை. வெறும் பாடல்கள், ரொமான்ஸ் காட்சிகளில் மட்டுமே அட்டென்டன்ஸ் போடுகிறார். நாயகனுடன் ஒப்பிடும்போது வில்லன் ரோஷன் மேத்யூவுக்குக் குறைவான காட்சிகள்தான் என்றாலும் தான் வரும் காட்சிகளில் டெரர் கிளப்புகிறார். சற்று ஓவர் ஆக்ட்டிங் பாவனைகள் தெரிந்தாலும் அந்தப் பாத்திரத்துக்கான நியாயத்தைச் செய்திருக்கிறார். ஆனால், பார்க்கும் அனைவரையும் ஜாலியாக கொலைகள் செய்யும் அவர், ஒரு பெரிய கார்ப்பரேட் வாரிசா, ஒரு மாபியா குழு தலைவனா, இல்லை இரண்டுமா என்பது கடைசிவரை குழப்பமாகவே இருக்கிறது.

தமிழ் நடிகராக மற்றுமொரு புதுவரவு கிரிக்கெட்டர் இர்ஃபான் பதான். இன்டர்போல் அதிகாரியாகப் படம் முழுவதும் வரும் பாத்திரம். சில டப்பிங் பிரச்னைகள் இருந்தாலும், நடிகராக பாஸ் மார்க் பெறுகிறார்.

இயக்குநர் அஜய் ஞானமுத்து ஒரு 'Larger Than Life' கதையை அதற்குரிய பிரமாண்டத்துடன் கொடுக்க முயன்றிருக்கிறார். ஆனால், அதை நம்பும்படியாகக் கொடுப்பதில் சறுக்கியிருக்கிறார். சர்வதேச கொலைகள் 'காதுல பூ' ரகமாகவே விரிகின்றன. இதற்கு எதற்கு இத்தனை வெளிநாட்டுப் பயணங்கள், பில்டப்புகள் எனக் கேட்கும் அளவு ஸ்க்ரிப்ட்டில் அத்தனை லாஜிக் ஓட்டைகள் எட்டிப் பார்க்கின்றன. நம்மூரில் நடக்கும் கதையாகவே எடுத்திருந்தாலும்கூட, சில ஓட்டைகளை அடைத்திருக்கலாம். சாதாரண பத்திரிகையாளராக வரும் கே.எஸ்.ரவிக்குமாரை அண்டர்கவரில் சர்வதேச லெவலில் ஆபரேஷன்கள் செய்பவராகக் காட்டிவிட்டு, பின்னர் அவரையே காமெடி பீஸ் ஆக்கியிருக்கிறது திரைக்கதை.

இன்டர்வெல் ட்விஸ்ட் ஆச்சர்யம் என்றாலும், இரண்டாம் பாதியில் அந்த விசாரணை காட்சி தவிர்த்து நீண்ட நெடிய ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக் ஒன்றும் ஓடுகிறது. ஆனால், அது எந்தவித எமோஷனுமின்றி 'ஒரு தகவலுக்காக' என்கிற ரீதியிலேயே கடந்துபோகின்றது. நிறைய ட்விஸ்ட்களை முடிச்சுகளாக ஆங்காங்கே வைத்துவிட்டு, எல்லாவற்றையும் ஒரே ஃப்ளாஷ்பேக்கில் 'நான்-லீனியராக' அவிழ்க்கிறேன் என்கிற ரீதியில் கதையை நகர்த்தியிருக்கின்றனர். ஆனால், அதில் ஒருவித தெளிவின்மையே எட்டிப் பார்க்கிறது.

ஏ.ஆர்.ரஹ்மானின் இசையில் ஏற்கெனவே வைரலான 'தும்பி துள்ளல்', 'அதிரா' தாண்டி மற்ற பாடல்கள் கதையோடு ஒட்டவில்லை என்றாலும் ரசிக்க வைக்கின்றன. பின்னணி இசையில் 'Gibberish'ஆக ஒலிக்கும் தீம் மியூசிக், அந்த மழை ஸ்டன்ட் காட்சி என எல்லாவற்றிலும் இசைப்புயலின் ராஜ்ஜியம்தான். வெளிநாட்டில் எல்லா கதவுகளும் அடைக்கப்பட்டு வழியின்றி நிற்கும்போது விக்ரம் மனதுக்குள் கணக்குப் போடும் காட்சிக்கு அட்டகாசமாக உயிர்கொடுத்திருக்கிறது படத்தின் கிராபிக்ஸ் குழு. புவன் சீனிவாசன் மற்றும் ஹரீஷ் கண்ணனின் ஒளிப்பதிவு பனிப்பிரதேசங்களின் அழகையும், மழை சண்டைக் காட்சியில் அதன் பதைபதைப்பையும் அதற்குரிய அழகியலுடன் காட்சிப்படுத்தியிருக்கிறது.

திக்கற்று குரூப்புல டூப்பாக நிற்கும் ரொமான்ஸ் காட்சிகளைக் கத்தரித்து, லாஜிக் என்ற விஷயத்தை இன்னமும் கவனத்துடன் கையாண்டிருந்தால் விக்ரம் என்னும் மகாநடிகனின் உழைப்புக்கு நியாயம் சேர்த்திருக்கலாம். இந்த `கோப்ரா'விடம் விஷமில்லை, சீற மட்டுமே செய்திருக்கிறது.

Introduction: Cobra is an action thriller starring Vikram and Srinidhi Shetty of KGF fame in the lead roles. It’s directed by Ajay Gnanamuthu whose previous blockbuster movies were Demonte Colony and Imaikka Nodigal. The music is scored by A.R.Rahman.

Premise : Scotland Prince is murdered by Chiyaan Vikram, a contract killer. The modesoperendi is very similar to the Odisha CM murder which happened a year before. The Turkish Interpol Irrfan Pathan is appointed as the investigation officer. What happens in this hunt and where this case leads to forms the crux of the story.

Writing/ Direction:

The base plot which is Vikram character’s flashback is familiar yet an interesting one to create an enjoyable masala entertainer. The opening murder scene is pretty promising with enough logical details, followed by a solid opening song that establishes the hero’s assassinations. The mathematical approach in the initial portions are different and explain the happenings better. There is a psychological layer to the central character, it is showcased beautifully throughout the movie. An interrogation scene in the latter relies on the hero’s medical condition, it’s very well made and received in the theatre with loads of cheers. The interval twist is decent, not a bang-on moment though. Director Ajay Gnanamuthu’s direction is mediocre compared to his previous works which were neater, he settles in the basic level and delivers nothing in a praise-worthy manner. It was hard to involve in the screenplay as the flow fails to carry any sort of interesting elements to hold the attention. The screenplay is very weak with dull situations that don’t excite. The core idea is not converted as a full script, the revealing points are in fact messy. The heroine portions are so boring and a needless track that appears as a filler, also the romantic scenes are filled with cringe dialogues. The film moves as an investigation thriller intended to be about intelligent math formulas, computer hacking, etc… but there is no smartness in how it is handled. The second half had potential to be commercially captivating, but it is wasted by placing melodramatic sentiments and unwantedly stretched out tasteless sequences leading us for a restless watch.

Performances:

As always, Chiyaan Vikram has taken immense efforts for his different getups, he has shown variety in his body language as well. Not a glittering presence, there’s not much scope for him to perform, but in the given minimal space, he has done very well in the psychological sequences. Because of the poorly written love portions, the KGF gal Srinidhi Shetty doesn’t impress much. Irfan Pathan is a complete miscast, his expressions are so amateurish and the poor guy is like one joker existing as an Interpol officer. Mrinalini Ravi and Mia George exhibit over acting and their roles are also not impactful enough. Roshan Matthew puts up a great show with his psychic behaviour, his first few scenes were menacing but falls flat after interval. Robo Shankar has no space to score with counter punches. Nothing much to do for KS Ravikumar, John Vijay, Poovaiyar and Suresh Menon. On the other hand, Anandaraj gets a unique role, he has enjoyed and done it with ease. The artists who played the teenage and childhood days of Vikram were very good, replicating the mood neatly. The small artists who appear as random bodyguards, cops and gundas are all very badly casted.

Technicalities:

A.R.Rahman’s are satisfying enough, the energetic number Adheera is amazing, Uyir Urugudhe is a soothing melody, while the other songs are also pretty decent. ARR’s background score partially clicks, only some tunes hold but most of them are disappointing. The locations are large scale, but the visuals are not that rich, the film could have been grander with better camera work. Edit pattern is screwed up, certain high points falter because of that. Also the film runs for an unapologetic 183 minutes, an overly long flick with full of lags, at least it wouldn't have been a patience testing experience. Prosthetic make up at its worst, although a couple of them were convincing, a few looks seemed so odd for Vikram. The hair wig is very much evident in some crucial places. Visual effects is a mixed bag, the psychological world was interesting but some basic features like rain, etc are messy. Stunt choreography is bland, lacks punch.

Bottomline:

The interesting psychological idea and a commercially viable base plot stays on the ground level as the screenplay is underdeveloped. With a better packaging and neater presentation, it could've at least been a decent flick.
