Video games often blend fun with commentary. There are many games out there that have a character tell a riveting speech, one that makes the player think and ponder the reality of the person speaking the powerful words. Fictional, or not, the words spoken by characters can truly be both inspiring or upsetting.

There is a great deal of iconic video game characters that give speeches , either to the player, or their crew. Some are entirely compelling and make the player forget that they are holding a controller. What can make these speeches harder to listen to, is when a boss fight is brewing. So, which riveting speeches in video games can be considered iconic?

10 The Healthy Human Mind (Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2)

As the penultimate mission of Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 ’s campaign, “ Just Like Old Times ” features a grandiose speech from Captain John Price. As his ally, Soap, asks for Price’s input, he is met with silence, until Price begins to audibly philosophize on death.

RELATED: Why Call Of Duty: Modern Warfare 2 Won't Feature Zombies

Price’s speech is cold and somewhat morbid. It’s a great look into his mind and his goal. “ We will. Kill him .” That’s it, that is the mission. Price will forever be a soldier, and his speech to Soap teaches him a valuable lesson on doing whatever it takes to make sure true history survives.

9 More Powerful Than Any Weapon (Mass Effect 3)

As the climax in Mass Effect 3 ramps up, Commander Shepard performs their final speech to their Comrades . The Mass Effect games have held some great speeches, thanks to Commander Shepard’s charisma and intellect. Yet, there’s something poignant about their final speech.

Shepherd rallies their friends and comrades-in-arms, and the player can choose what Shepherd says to their friends. It makes the speaker feel that much more personal, and that much more emotional; knowing how close the player has become with their crew, before entering perhaps the final battle as Commander Shepard, and the lats look of their friends.

8 Dear Humanity (Halo 2)

The fourth campaign mission of Halo 2 features Master Chief on Old Mombasa, Earth, with his fellow Marine soldiers. The introduction cutscene of this mission, “ Outskirts ”, has the characters ponder on the mystery behind the message they received, which repeats “Regret, Regret” in a loop.

The intensely charismatic Sergeant Major Avery Junior Johnson wastes no time in deciding on what “ regret ” means. His speech is extremely short but gets the point across. He talks of how the aliens will regret coming to Earth. It’s funny, and Sergeant Johnson rallies his troops with one large “ oorah !”

7 Free To Follow Our Own Path (Assassin’s Creed 2)

A compelling speech, from one of gaming’s most iconic characters, and most iconic assassins . Assassin’s Creed 2 features Ezio Auditore giving a speech to the Italian people about the profound identity of individuals, the freedom of choice, and forging one’s path.

RELATED: Assassin's Creed: Games With The Best Cover Art, Ranked

Ezio proves with this speech just how wise and strong he is. It’s a beautiful speech and one that sums up Ezio’s character growth perfectly. From a rebellious youth to one of the bravest, and greatest leaders of the new Assassin order. There’s a reason why Ezio Auditore is so well remembered, even after the conclusion of his story.

6 There Is Light In The Darkness (Fallout: New Vegas)

Fallout is a franchise that is no stranger to the weird, the wonderful, and the compelling. Fallout: New Vegas provides fans of the Fallout franchise with a plethora of interesting characters. Characters that make the player debate their choices for a while.

One character is Joshua Graham, introduced in the Honest Hearts DLC. Toward the end of the DLC, Joshua offers a glimmer of hope, even after the horrific circumstance of his being and location . This is because Joshua has been burned to near death. Joshua speaks of religion and the importance of family. It’s a grand speech.

5 My Fellow Americans (Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus)

Those that chose the Wyatt timeline are given a riveting speech in the genre-defining franchise sequel, Wolfenstein 2: The New Colossus . At the end of the game, Wyatt provides those watching live television with a great speech. After the victory of the Nazis in an alternate timeline, Americans were left on their knees.

Wyatt gives warnings to the Nazi regime, as a hopeful song softly strums in the background. Wyatt’s passion can be felt through the television screen, and it’s entirely infectious, patriot, and in search of the liberty that belongs to a free country, and a free people.

4 I’m Big Boss (Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain)

As gunfire and explosions rage across Outer Haven, Big Boss takes one last look at himself in the mirror before heading off to the latest, and potentially last, confrontation, in Metal Gear Solid 5: The Phantom Pain . It’s here, that Big Boss remembers all those years ago, and discovers “ The Man Who Sold The World ”.

“Venom” Snake listens to a recording from Big Boss, who tells “Venom” who he is. “ I’m Big Boss, and you are too. ” Big Boss is so inspirational , and grand, that a man willingly changed his entire identity to reforge the laws of the world. It’s epic and perfectly wraps up the Metal Gear saga.

3 Vorkuta Burns (Call of Duty: Black Ops)

The second campaign mission in Call of Duty: Black Ops follows Alex Mason and Viktor Reznov starting an uprising to escape Vorkuta, the brutal Soviet Labor Camp in Northern Russia. As the men rally to a radio tower, Reznov delivers a powerful speech to help invigorate the men escaping, as it echoes across the labor camp.

His speech is nothing short of riveting, and it rallies even the harshest critics to Reznov’s side. He speaks of war, the exploitation of young men for their country, and how it is now their time for victory. The speech is the perfect call to action, as the imprisoned of Vorkuta seek death over enslavement, even though, a Thundergun easter egg would have helped too.

2 I Fight (The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim)

There is a uniqueness to The Elder Scrolls 5: Skyrim for its story. Not only does the player embark on the journey of the Dragonborn, to fight the evil Alduin the World-Eater, but they are also faced with the decision of war. The player can embark on either side, the Imperials, or the Stormcloaks.

The leader of the Stormcloaks is Ulfric Stormcloak, the Jarl of Windhelm. The civil war in Skyrim is over the Nords and their rights to their freedoms and right to beliefs. He gives a powerful speech on why he fights, and even if the player opposes Ulfric’s rule, they cannot fault his dedication.

1 Life’s End (Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater)

Hideo Kojima’s creative genius has no end, and Metal Gear Solid 3: Snake Eater is no exception. When The Boss betrays Naked Snake, he ventures through the game in wondering why she would betray her country, and him in particular.

At the final confrontation, The Boss provides Snake with a great speech. It’s a one-sided conversation in which Snake just listens, and is enthralled by her words. It’s one of the saddest scenes in the franchise. His love for his mentor is strong, and The Boss is encapsulating, and beautifully tragic. She’s one of the greatest characters in Metal Gear , and her character had a domino effect on the entire franchise.

15 Most Badass Monologues In Video Game History

"Is a man not entitled to the sweat of his brow?"

best game speeches

Cinema has long been the go-to medium that everyone would look to for legendary monologues, and you'd expect no less from something that's been around for over 100 years. However, ever since video games evolved from blips and bloops and made cinematic storytelling possible, they've been brimming with memorable speeches that cause tingles to go up your spine, engraining themselves into your collective subconscious in the process.

Whether they spur us on into last stand battles, mockingly introduce us to ruined worlds or make us rethink everything we've done in the game up to that point, video game speeches have a unique relationship with the player.

What gives them their power is the fact that they're addressing you directly, pulling you in on a personal level and inviting you to react and respond to them - be it with your gun, your own dialogue options, or simply by playing the narrative laid out for you. A great video game monologue affects us in a way that no other medium ever will, and these are the greatest ones that will stuck with you forever.

Seven Most Influential Speeches In Video Games

Posted By Shubhankar Parijat | On 20th, Dec. 2010

best game speeches

Dialogues are a very vital part of any visual media of entertainment, which means video games as well. And the stronger and well-written the dialogues are, the better the story of the game turns out to be. It is believed by many that dialogues are the very backbone of any story, because if the dialogues fall flat, so does the entire narrative, for they are what drive the entire flow forward, lead one thing to the other.

Video games are no different in this aspect, especially the ones these days, what with them having so heavy and complex stories. And with strong speeches showered between regular intervals, a game can truly outshine its competition- if, of course, the speeches are well written and delivered.

Here is out list of the seven best speeches we have come across in games. These, we feel, were delivered and written nigh-perfectly, and provided for a few minutes of sheer awe and joy. Enjoy the list!

Remember, these speeches have been ranked and listed in no particular order.

Solid Snake- War Has Changed (Metal Gear Solid 4)

War has changed. It’s no longer about nations, ideologies, or ethnicity. It’s an endless series of proxy battles fought by mercenaries and machines. War, and its consumption of life, has become a well-oiled machine. War has changed. ID-tagged soldiers carry ID-tagged weapons, use ID-tagged gear. Nanomachines inside their bodies enhance and regulate their abilities. Genetic control. Information control. Emotion control. Battlefield control. Everything is monitored and kept under control. War has changed. The age of deterrence has become the age of control… All in the name of averting catastrophe from weapons of mass destruction. And he who controls the battlefield… controls history. War has changed. When the battlefield is under total control… War becomes routine.

Solid Snake is a great speaker, perhaps one of the best we have seen in any game, and he was probably at his peak in Metal Gear Solid 4. The very opening scene of MGS4 started off with a bang, as Solid Snake went on about how war has become much more complex and deep than it originally was. And with Kojima’s superb direction, the intro scene feels like nothing but a movie.

Visari- Defenders Of The Helghast Dream, Now Is Our Time (Killzone)

My people, sons and daughters of Helghan. For many years we have been a broken nation- shunned, oppressed and conquered by those we sought to escape. Days ago, I asked for time, and that time was granted by you. You, the strength in my arm, the holders of my dreams. Our forefathers embarked on the greatest exodus in the history of all mankind. An exodus for freedom. Helghan became that freedom. Our new world changed our bodies. At first, it weakened us. But in fact, we were growing stronger. In the time you have given me, I have rebuilt our nation. I have rebuilt our strength. And I have rebuilt our pride. Our enemies at home have been re-educated. We have given them new insights into our cause. On this day, we stand united once more. On this day, those driven to divide us will hear our voice. On this day, we shall act as one, and we shall be ignored no more. Defenders of the Helghast dream, now is our time.

The opening, and the best, few minutes of Killzone. Scolar Visari is a genius- that much can be figured out upon hearing his awesome speeches. And like the analogies that are drawn quite a lot of time not just in the game, but even on the forums, he was much like Adolf Hitler- a misguided genius. And yet, upon hearing Visari speak, we almost start believing him, start sympathizing with him. We start believing in the Helghan dream. That is how good a speaker he is- was. May he rest in peace.

Chairman Prescott- Humans Are No Strangers To War (Gears of War 2)

Humans are no strangers to war. After all, we’ve been fighting for as long as we can remember. War is all we know. In the past, we fought for emulsion. We fought for country. We fought for freedom. But all that changed after E-Day. For fifteen years, we have been fighting for our very survival against inhuman, genocidal monsters. But it is a fight we cannot continue. Humanity faces extinction, unless we end this war now. We had hoped the Lightmass bombing would decimate the Locust Horde, but they survived… and have returned stronger than ever. They’ve brought with them a force that can sink entire cities. Even Jacinto, our last beacon of hope through all these dark days, is now at risk. Soon, we’ll have nothing left to defend. And that means, we have only one option… attack. Gears, what I ask of you now is not an easy thing, but it is necessary. If we are to survive, if we are to live long enough to see the seasons pass, our children grow, and experience a time of peace that we have never known, we must now take this fight to the Locust. We will go to where they live and where they breed, and we will destroy them. This is the day we take the battle to the heart of the enemy. This is the day that we correct the course of human history. This is the day we ensure our survival as a species. Soldiers of the COG, my fellow Gears, go forth and bring back the hope of humanity.

Gears of War 2 is, according to many people, not half of what the original Gears was, but an epic storyline, presented through brilliantly directed cutscenes, make it an awesome game. And with a speech to boot at the very beginning, it becomes completely unforgettable. Chairman Prescott motivates his people to take one final stand against the Locust as their final hope, or all life would diminish, until the human race is completely eradicated, and these “genocidal” aliens take over.

The most badass video game mottos and speeches

Let me begin.

best game speeches

Back in my college days, I was forced to take a speech class in order to complete my degree. Being that I didnt have any great fear of public speaking, I figured this would be a simple class I could easily breeze through. The professor I ended up with, however, was one of the tougher ones in the school, and expected State of the Union Address-style perfection from all of us.

Needless to say, the class was much more stressful than I had anticipated. Years later, I still harbor some negativity toward him. And, since letting go of baggage is nothing but a good thing, Ive decided the time has come. The time to exorcise these demons once and for all. How? By passive-aggressively diverting my insecurities elsewhere and grading the speeches, sayings, and mantras of characters in video games.

"May the Night Mother wrap you in her cold, dark embrace." The Dark Brotherhood (The Elder Scrolls)

best game speeches

10/10 This salutation shared between those of you within the Dark Brotherhood is easily one of the most chilling things said in video games. It fits perfectly, allowing one to be cordial with a fellow killer-for-hire while still reminding one another of your true purpose and method of making a living.

Cold, macabre, and eerily effective, theres something awesome in the way its shared between Brothers that gives it the ultimate badass edge so many others strive for. Truly, the greatest shame is that none of your victims will ever fully appreciate the lengths to which your badassery goes before taking a dagger to the throat.

"Nothing is true. Everything is permitted." Ezio Auditore da Firenze (Assassins Creed: Revelations)

best game speeches

Full speech: "Nothing is true. Everything is permitted. To say that nothing is true is to recognize that the foundations of society are fragile, and that we must be the shepherds of our own civilization. To say that everything is permitted is to understand that we are the architects of our actions, and that we must live with their consequences, whether glorious or tragic."

6/10 While its a beautiful breakdown of the Creed, Ezio, I dont know if this reaches quite the same heights of badassery as the others on this list. Rather than being a badass statement, its a little bit more of a philosophical lecture on the mindset and beliefs held by the Assassins. Plus, in this explanation, were supposedly talking about a group of people who dedicate their lives to perfecting the killing arts. This sounds like the initiation speech of a really pretentious fraternity. I will give you this; the poignant way in which you deliver it gives each word a nice punch, but its not the skull-crushing blow it needs to be to stand out on this list.

"Spartans never die. They just go to Hell and regroup." Spartans (Halo Series)

best game speeches

8/10 Allow me to be frank with you, Halo. Although it sounds a bit like the grumbled, jingoistic military nonsense spoken by Colonel Quaritch in Avatar, I do have to admit this saying has a nice ring to it. The Spartans themselves are tough as a bear raised in a barbed wire forest, so its fitting for them to have an equally tough mantra used to help assuage the emotions of those mourning their MIA comrades.

Weekly digests, tales from the communities you love, and more

As any good commanding officer will know, its important to keep morale high during times of war, especially when that war is one waged with ancient alien races looking to blast lasers through the midsections of unsuspecting humans. So Halo, as much as I dont love campy military dialogue, I cant fault you for evoking the image of immortal soldiers as a way to keep everyone motivated to finish this fight.

"Amonkira, Lord of Hunters. Grant that my hands be steady, my aim be true, and my feet swift. And, should the worst come to pass, grant me forgiveness." Thane Krios (Mass Effect 2)

best game speeches

10/10 Thane, everything about this prayer serves as a nice summation of who you are. You are, in my mind, one of the ultimate badasses, a gentleman killer who is fully aware of his power and feels no need to broadcast machismo to the entire world. The mere fact that you do this so well is nothing short of impressive.

Humility and loyalty are two of your most important traits, and this prayer to Amonkira shows it. Whats more, this prayer very delicately asks for success in killing someone and forgiveness in the event everything goes wrong, all delivered in one cool, reverent breath. If I were one of your targets, Id be hiding under the blankets of my bed, completely terrified. Well done, sir. Take a bow.

"When we hunt, we kill. No one is safe. Nothing is sacred. We are Blackwatch. We are the last line of defense. We will burn our own to hold the red line. It is the last line to ever hold." Blackwatch (Prototype)

best game speeches

9/10 I wont lie folks; this is a pretty solid creed. Death is promised, safety is denied, and you pretty much establish yourselves as cold-blooded pragmatists that will do anything to ensure the success of your mission, including sacrificing your own people for the sake of your objectives.

The only thing that counteracts this is that youre essentially proven worthless against one man who has the ability to transform himself into a hideous writhing monster in varied forms. Youve successfully contained entire viruses before, but youre not able to stop a single dude who looks like the bass player of a late '90s punk rock band. You might want to spend a little less time reciting badass creeds and start working a lot more on your combat performance.

"I am matter. I am antimatter. I can see your past. I can see your future. I consume time, and will consume you." Culex (Super Mario RPG)

best game speeches

9/10 Culex, the most devastating part of this entire saying of yours is the fact that you pretty much simultaneously declare yourself anything and everything all at once. That sets up pretty lofty expectations, which is exactly what the ultimate badass needs to be fully realized.

Where you run into trouble is the continuity thing. You start off declaring that you are both everything and nothing, that you see the future and "consume time," and then immediately jump to consuming your foes. Which, you know, thats fine, but the two arent really connected per se. A minor critique, but one you might want to keep in mind the next time you decide to emerge and wish devastation upon unsuspecting plumbers and their friends.

"My name is Ultima. I am power both ancient and unrivaled. I do not bleed, for I am but strength given form. Feeble creatures of fleshyour time is nigh!" Ultima Weapon (Final Fantasy)

best game speeches

9/10 I really do have to applaud your brash confidence and self-esteem, Ultima. You obviously think highly of yourself, and it shows in this amazingly badass declaration. It also doesnt hurt that youre a massive, terrifying dragon monster in almost all of your varied forms.

The only issue you run into here is that youve appeared in a number of Final Fantasy games and have been defeated time after time by its different characters. The fact that you have proven yourself so vulnerable sort of robs this statement of its ultimate badassery. After all, why fear a villain with an amazing and ominous declaration of power such as this when you know its possible to defeat him? Plus, your adorable chibi form in Theatrhythm honestly does little to leave me quaking in my boots.

"We will be reborn in the cold womb of the ocean." (BioShock 2)

best game speeches

9/10 To the Rapturian vandal who decided to scrawl this on the wall in BioShock 2: well done. Yours is a ruined city plagued with insanity and run by the unstable, and yet, like the diehard fans of a horrible sports team, theres an undying sense of hope within its citizens that things will one day return to their former glory.

Thats why this creed is so powerful; its direct in its message, a declaration that things will one day be good again. That one day, people wont have to walk down hallways and see blood smears on walls or damaged corpses lying awkwardly on the floor. Of course, we all know how things eventually turned out for the once-Utopian underwater paradise, but heyits good to dream.

"The right man in the wrong place can make all the difference in the world. So wake up, Mr. Freeman. Wake up and smell the ashes." G-Man (Half Life 2)

best game speeches

7/10 Heres the thing, G-Man: when you deliver this quote, its done in a way that implies you know things are about to get crazy. This makes things even more unsettling and mysterious, because we know next to nothing about you other than the fact that you enjoy speaking cryptically and have a penchant for fine mens wear.

Its really the way you deliver this line that robs it of some of its ultimate badassery. At the best times, you have a very creepy, unhinged way of speaking that is nothing short of unsettling, but its undercut by words you sometimes brokenly deliver like an old man in a nursing home asking for a bowl of oatmeal. You dont have a deep, sinister voice, so playing up the creepiness of your mysterious nature will go a long way in helping you achieve badass actualization in the future.

"God: the title suits me well." SHODAN (System Shock)

best game speeches

Full speech: "In my talons, I shape clay, crafting life forms as I please. Around me is a burgeoning empire of steel. From my throne room, lines of power careen into the skies of Earth. My whims will become lightning bolts that devastate the mounds of humanity. Out of the chaos, they will run and whimper, praying for me to end their tedious anarchy. I am drunk with this vision. God: the title suits me well." SHODAN (System Shock)

10/10 Ill be honest, SHODAN: things simply dont get any more terrifying than this. Your haunting, distorted voice delivers each of these lines slowly, savoring them like a fine wine while casually condemning humanity. Whats more, you kind of hit on all the points necessary to qualify as a horrifying villain: promise of death and destruction to humanity, descent into utter madness, omnipotence, and that whole difficult-to-stop thing that keeps people from ever fully being able to defeat you. Well done, SHODAN. Well done.

What say you?

best game speeches

There we have it. Badassery was expressed, chilling dialogue was delivered, and weve hopefully offered our heroes a bit of constructive criticism that will one day transform them into the pinnacles of badassdom they all aspire to be. 10 Best Video Game Monologues, Ranked

As video games became more cinematic, iconic scenes began to develop lives of their own.

Video games are one of the most advanced storytelling mediums available in the modern era. As a result, the stories video games tell have become increasingly nuanced. The characters' choices and dialogue build upon the world the developers and writers created to evoke a genuine and enjoyable experience for players.

RELATED: 10 Lines In Video Games That Change Everything

As video games became more cinematic, iconic scenes began to develop lives of their own, just as those from movies had before. A skillful combination of excellent voice acting, tremendous writing, and detailed game development brought compelling narratives to life, which players can feel like they're a part of.

10 Kairi's Letter In Kingdom Hearts II: "Thinking Of You, Wherever You Are."

Loving interpersonal relationships are so powerful in the Kingdom Hearts universe that they can do just about anything. In the case of Kingdom Hearts II , Kairi's letter relaying her feelings to Sora and Riku is strong enough to save them from the Realm of Darkness. Delivered as a beautiful monologue by Risa Uchida in Japanese and Hayden Panettiere in English, Kairi's letter to her best friends perfectly encapsulates the series' themes surrounding the importance of friendship . She reminds them they're all connected: "There are many worlds, but they share the same sky – one sky, one destiny."

9 Dutch's Last Words In Red Dead Redemption: "We Can't Always Fight Nature, John."

Though it's interrupted by some other dialogue, Dutch van der Linde's final musings in Red Dead Redemption are an iconic speech. In the lead-up to his final moments, Dutch expressed a fascinating clarity.

RELATED: 10 Best Death Scenes In Video Games

He knew there was no longer a place for him in the world, but could not fight his nature in order to adapt. Though he tries to explain it to John, his former mentee just doesn't understand. As a result, Dutch chooses to end his life on his own terms rather than force John to shoot him.

8 G-Man's Wake-Up Call In Half-Life 2: "Wake Up And Smell The Ashes..."

The G-Man is one of gaming's most curious figures. He haunted the Half-Life franchise with cryptic dialogue and mysterious physical appearances on the peripheries of Gordon Freeman's vision. At the start of Half-Life 2 , his voice is the first one players hear. He rouses Freeman, assuring him his time has come once more. This short monologue sets the stage for the game, preparing both the players and Gordon Freeman to enter a strange new world shaped by their past actions and choices.

7 Vaas's Existential Crisis In Far Cry 3: "Did I Ever Tell You The Definition Of Insanity?"

Villains often give excellent monologues. Vaas Montenegro from Far Cry 3 is considered by many fans one of the best-written video game antagonists of all time. His ravings on the definition of insanity and his relationship with Jason Brody, the player character , firmly defined his character and actions. Vaas explains the classic definition of insanity as repeatedly doing the same thing and expecting a different result. He then explains that continuing to try and kill Jason would make him insane, since "[He] killed you once already..."

6 GLaDOS' Last Goodbye In Portal 2: "You Dangerous, Mute Lunatic."

Throughout Portal 's duology of games, Chell and GLaDOS go through a lot, both together and at each other's hands. As a result, their final goodbye holds significant weight. At the end of Portal 2 , GLaDOS determines that fighting Chell is far too complicated to be worth it. She tells the silent protagonist, "You know what my days used to be like? I just tested. Nobody murdered me. Or put me in a potato. Or fed me to birds." So she says goodbye to Chell and sends the player on their way out of the facility, just as they've always wanted.

5 Chairman Prescott's Speech InGears Of War 2: "Humans Are No Strangers To War."

Prior to an expansive attack on the Locust in Gears of War 2 , Chairman Richard Prescott spoke to the army of the Coalition of Ordered Governments. At this point, they were in dire straits, and this fight was one of their last chances to save the human race from genocidal extinction.

RELATED: 10 Best Xbox Games Of The 2000s

The Chairman opens his speech by explaining how humans have always known war, and it's natural for them. He then uses this to inspire the soldiers, showing them their capacity to fight will lead them to victory in this crucial battle.

4 Zelda's Ceremony In The Legend Of Zelda: Breath Of The Wild: "Hero Of Hyrule..."

In The Legend of Zelda: Breath of the Wild , Link and the player can recover several of his prior memories. One of these shows him kneeling before Zelda, surrounded by the other rulers of the land. She invokes his role as the hero of Hyrule and prays that his reunion with the Master Sword will ensure their people's protection. Zelda has many beautiful speeches in Breath of the Wild , but this one builds upon the mystique of the series' lore and measures up to famous high-fantasy orations.

3 Andrew Ryan's Reveal In Bioshock: "A Man Chooses! A Slave Obeys!"

One of the best plot twists in gaming history takes place in Andrew Ryan's office in Bioshock . Rapture's founder reveals that Jack, the player character, has been under his enemy's control all along. He shows Jack who Atlas truly is and reveals the programmed phrase Atlas has been using to control and manipulate Jack during his journey. Even though Jack defeats Andrew Ryan in this sequence, Ryan's revelation that Jack is only doing so out of obedience rocked gamers to their core, making them question whether they'd ever had any agency in Rapture.

2 Sarah Lindwall's Last Wishes In SOMA: "Send Them Out There. To The Stars."

SOMA was a horror game unlike any other. Though it had its fair share of scares, it was also a deeply philosophical story about life, death, and humanity.

RELATED: 10 Horror Games Everyone Should Play At Least Once

In this heart-wrenching sequence, Sarah Lindwall, the last human alive, asks the player to turn off her life support and let her pass with some dignity. If they choose to abide by her request, she tells them about her life on Earth and PATHOS-II. Her last words are a plea for the ARK to be sent into space so humanity may be among the stars.

1 Cave Johnson's Rant In Portal 2: "Make Life Take The Lemons Back!"

Cave Johnson, founder and CEO of Aperture Science, made his opinion on what to do with life's metaphorical lemons extremely clear in Portal 2 . His tirade against the proverbial lemons became famous among gamers and non-gamers alike – mainly for its distinctive combination of humor and genuine inspiration. Cave Johnson told players they didn't need to suffer underneath life's lemons . He chose to fight back and threaten life with its own lemons. The metaphor was a bit strained at some points, but that was just part of the monologue's charm.

8 Best Villain Speeches in Video Game History

These villain's have a way with words.

A good hero needs a good villain, especially in video games. Whether it’s to provide you with a challenge, to heighten the tension, or just to tell a good story, the medium provides hundreds of iconic baddies for you to pit your skills against.

Related: Most Intimidating Villains in Action-Adventure Games

Some of these villains just end up being another speed bump on your way to beating the game, but some iconic bosses distinguish themselves not by what they do, but by what they say. Not only do these monologues further the story, they also introduce who your opponent is, and make them care about them. They can turn a good encounter into a great encounter, pushing your opponents from the screen into the annals of video game history.

8 Elden Ring: Let It Be Written On Thy Meagre Grave - Morgott, The Omen King

Morgott has a chip on his shoulder, maybe literally. The son of queen Marika and Godfrey, his sole purpose seems to be prevent you and anyone else from entering the Erdtree and becoming the next Elden Lord. But while some bosses in Elden Ring are just plain annoying, it’s hard to hate Morgott’s grandeur, with an opening speech that could have been taken straight from Shakespeare.

Related: Elden Ring Bosses That Were Surprisingly Easy

Aside from Anthony Hall's menacing delivery, Morgott's speech is also a marvel of exposition. In just a few words, he gives you a huge dose of the game's lore, and expresses his motivation in a way that would put most screenwriters to shame. You’ve fought him once before as Margit, the Fell Omen , but it's difficult not to feel a chill of fear as he walks down the stairs, leaning on his cane, and rumbles “Graceless tarnished. What is thy business with these thrones?”

7 Command & Conquer Red Alert 3: Space - Premier Anatoly Cherdenko

Command & Conquer: Red Alert 3 is a game that knows exactly what it is: a shlocky, sci-fi RTS with one of the best soundtracks of the time. Making it an FMV game, a style that went out of fashion almost a decade before , adds to the goofy, retro feel of the game. And, let’s be real, turns the game from a generic RTS into something worth playing.

Tim Curry as Cherdenko gives a lot of good performances in the game, embodying the game’s over-the-top Soviets, and, it seems, having a hell of a time of it. The best is when Curry announces that he’s sending everything that he has at you, and that he is also going to the one place capitalism can’t reach him: Space! The speech contains little of the seriousness of other speeches on this list, but it deserves to be here for having one of the funniest lines in video game history.

6 Observer: Why Should One More Make A Difference? - Adam Lazarski

Observer is a game where you play as David Lazarski, voiced by the late great Rutger Haur, as a kind of cyber-cop in a futuristic, noir world reminiscent of Blade Runner . You’ve been called by your son, Adam, to a tenement building where you find his room ransacked and the system locked down. Using your ability to hack into people’s minds, you slowly discover the truth behind your son’s disappearance, all the while trying to keep together your own sanity.

The game culminates in the discovery that Adam has been making digital copies of himself, one of which got free, killed him, and has been grooming you as a vessel to hide himself in. While not a single speech, the reveal deserves a mention because of the mind-bending twist it gives to an already mind-bending game.

5 Far Cry 3: The Definition Of Insanity - Vaas Montenegro

Vaas Montenegro has plenty of hobbies. Aside from pina coladas and long walks in the rain, he likes killing, maiming, stealing, extorting, and making the protagonist of Far Cry 3 wet their pants.

Related: Characters You Wouldn't Want To Invite Over To Meet Your Family

Nowhere is this more apparent than in Vaas’ monologue midway through the game, where you find yourself trussed up and tied to a brick far above the water. This is the second time he’s tried to kill you, and seems particularly peeved about it. So, just to hammer home how dead you are, Vaas goes on a tangent about how insanity is trying the same thing over and over again expecting a different result. Michael Mando’s frenetic performance gives the dialogue weight, but what truly puts this speech over the top is how Vaas repeats the first line “Did I ever tell you the definition of insanity?” at the end, right before he tries to kill you. Again.

4 Red Dead Redemption: You Can’t Fight Nature, John - Dutch Van Der Linde

Red Dead Redemption ’s main antagonist Dutch is the kind of villain we love to hate . He’s not a good guy, but he often dispenses more wisdom than you’d give him credit for. Case in point is his final speech after you corner him on the edge of a snow-covered cliff.

Before jumping to his death, Dutch gives an impassioned speech about how men like he, and the protagonist John Marsden, no longer have a place in the world. Besides giving a new face to the game’s main villain, the speech highlights the real tragedy of Red Dead: that, no matter how much he wants to redeem himself, society no longer wants men like John Marsden. It heavily foreshadows the game’s ending, and makes you question what it is you are fighting for.

3 Metal Gear Solid: There’s Only Room For One Boss - The Boss

As the series has progressed, Metal Gear Solid cutscenes have grown to become little films in their own right. And, since the series has more great villains than you can shake a stick at, it’s not surprising that it has a ton of great villain speeches.

Possibly the best, though, comes from the final boss of the game, fittingly called The Boss. The Boss trained you and raised you, but you spend the entire game thinking she has betrayed you, and your country. In this speech, she reveals that she was actually looking out for you the whole time, and wants you to take over for her, if you can kill her. She sacrifices her life so that you can continue on with her mission, and by the time you do the deed there’s not a dry eye in the house.

2 System Shock: God. The Title Suits Me Well - SHODAN

System Shock is one of those games that shaped video games into what they are today. Influential in its setting and gameplay mechanics, where System Shock truly shined was in its breathtaking story that pitted you, a futuristic hacker , against the villainous AI SHODAN who seeks to destroy all of humankind. You might have caused that, but that’s beside the point. You’re the one who has to put it right.

In its speech before the final showdown, SHODAN reveals its evil ambitions to you with shocking clarity. It’s difficult to see if there’s malice in a voice so monotone, but what the speech lacks in performance it makes up for in a verbal expressiveness that borders on poetry. “Lines of power careen from my throne room to the skies of earth. My whims will become lightning bolts that devastate the mound of humanity.” Almost beautiful, if they weren’t trying to fry everyone alive.

1 BioShock: A Man Chooses, A Slave Obeys - Andrew Ryan

As the protagonist of Bioshock , you’re convinced you’re doing the right thing, even if you did choose to kill a bunch of harmless little sisters to harvest their Adam. You’ve seen how evil the founder of Rapture, Andrew Ryan, can be and you’re willing to help out your buddy Atlas, who seems like a swell guy.

When you finally do get to Ryan, though, everything changes . Ryan reveals that everything you thought you knew about yourself is a lie. You were created in a lab, your memories were implanted at birth, and Atlas is actually controlling you through the hypnotic phrase “Would you kindly?” Then, just to bury the point home about how little control you have, Ryan forces you to kill him with a golf club. It’s a stunning twist in an already fantastic game, and also a subtle commentary on the nature of freedom. A three-minute speech that will have you questioning everything, no small feat.

Top 6 Best Boss Speeches in Video Games

Boss Video Games

Even if you are not an avid gamer, you must be familiar with video games that include bosses. Basically, a boss is a challenging character controlled by a computer in video games. He/she must be defeated at the end of a game segment, level, or the very end of the game itself. Bosses appear in different types of video games, including those based on a story, shooters, racing and fighting games, survival horrors, role-playing, and platform games. Typically, games feature several bosses and each of them is more difficult than the last one.

By the way, bosses usually give exciting speeches created by professional copywriters working at web development companies. Generally, writing a great speech is quite an important skill nowadays. That’s why students are often assigned this task at schools and colleges. But what to do if you can’t deal with it? Check the answer below.

Help with Speech Writing

Speeches are an integral part of our life. We hear them at ceremonies, competitions, concerts, and various public events. Hence, making a good speech is a vital skill. To develop it, you can start by following an example of professional speech writers. When I had to write my speech for graduation, I turned to a special company to help with that. Experts working there completed this task for me, so I had an excellent example of how to create a powerful speech that will touch listeners. Besides, if you like video games, you can get inspiration for your speech from so-called bosses. Let’s consider some of the best speeches given by them.

The best speeches by a boss in video games

Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice

The game Sekiro: Shadows Die Twice is an action-adventure developed by Japanese company FromSoftware. Some people think that it’s a bit thin on the ground for storytelling. However, Sekiro tells a great tale about coups, hierarchal collapse, and a number of mystic dragons. But to access it, players must make it quite far. Before the final battle, you can also hear an extremely powerful introductory speech by a boss.

Far Cry 2 is a first-person shooter that was developed and published by Ubisoft Montreal. The game is set in a fictional East African country where a civil war takes place. The storyline is focused on a mercenary whose task is to kill a weapons dealer called Jackal. The phrase that hooked many players in his amazing speech is “The Harder You Beat A Man, The Taller He Stands”.

Gears Of War 2

Another shooter on our list is ‘Gears Of War 2’. It was developed by Epic Games and published by Microsoft Game Studios, expanding technically on the previous version. Interestingly, the plot for the game was provided by Joshua Ortega, a famous comic book writer. The phrase that causes players to be lost in thought is “Life Is Cruel” said Queen Myrrah in her opening speech in the first sequel.

Resident Evil 5

All shooter game fans must know ‘Resident Evil 5’. This is a third-person shooter created by Capcom. The plot of ‘Resident Evil 5’ follows an investigation of a terrorist threat by agents called Chris Redfield and Sheva Alomar. The events take place in Kijuju, a fictional region of Africa. This game is also known for its expressions like “Incompetence surrounds me!” and “Let me clarify something for you, Chris. I don’t think of myself as a king. No, I am a god! And even kings bow to gods!” said Douglas.

Batman: Arkham City

This is an action adventure published by Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment. and developed by Rocksteady Studios. Obviously, it’s based on the DC Comics superhero Batman . Actually, this game is the sequel to the 2009 video game Batman: Arkham Asylum. In the main storyline, Batman must uncover the secret behind a threatening scheme orchestrated by Hugo Strange. The words that impress players of this game are “There’s Plenty Wrong With Me”. It seems many of us could relate to this phrase.

‘BioShock’ is an exciting first-person shooter designed by 2K Boston and 2K Australia. This is the first game in the BioShock series, whose concept was developed by Ken Levine, Irrational’s creative lead. It’s important to note that ‘BioShock’ incorporates ideas spread in the 20th century by dystopian and utopian thinkers, including Ayn Rand, George Orwell, and Aldous Huxley. What words from ‘BioShock’ speeches will make you think? Probably, the following: “Oh, hang on. I am a massive puppet who isn’t in control of my own destiny here”. Is this true about you?

Which boss speech inspired you the most in video games? Did we include your favorite boss or did we miss it? Let us know in the comments section below.

Nicolas Cage's Next Horror Movie Looks Like The Perfect True Detective Replacement After Season 4's Divisive Ending

Gxk quietly confirms there's a titan in the monsterverse that makes even godzilla look small, kenneth branagh's new movie is the perfect follow-up to his $600 million poirot trilogy.

The most inspiring sports movie speeches of all time light a fire under every sports fan's heart. They are typically given by head coaches of underdog teams who need a pre-game or halftime locker room pick-me-up to encourage the pursuit of victory against a challenging opponent. They can also arise in other unique ways that encapsulate the feelings of sportsmanship, teamwork, and a love of the game that reminds every athlete, coach, and fan why they play ball.

The timeless tale of inspiring underdogs in sports movies is the culmination of blood, sweat, and tears as well as fearlessness in the face of a formidable opponent. The best speeches in sports movies often remind those it is intended for to keep up their determination and maintain their belief in themselves. The most inspiring moments in sports movies come from the mutual desire to become greater than the sum of any given team's parts and often speak to notions of greatness and achievement that transcend the court or playing field.

10 Hoosiers - “I Don’t Care What The Scoreboard Says”

In the 1986 classic basketball film Hoosiers , Coach Norman Dale (Gene Hackman) delivers a passionate speech to his Hickory High School Huskers varsity team. Dale walks into a timid locker room in a make-or-break moment that will determine how the Indiana team will approach their big game. Dale's speech denounces the common anxieties that come with pre-game jitters, reminding his team not to focus on winning a distant state championship but to instead remember that the road to victory begins with one step. Dale encourages his team to forget about the crowds and the scoreboard, which leads to an iconic slow clap that fires the Huskers up before they hit the court.

9 Remember The Titans - “Leave No Doubt”

Remember the Titans is full of inspiring moments, but none capture the same intensity of the mid-game motivational speech given by Coach Bill Yoast (Will Patton). During the Northern Virginia Regional Championship Football Game, Yoast pulls his defensive players aside and reinforces their main objective, telling them to blitz the opponent's quarterback all night. After one of his star players quits during the game, Yoast improvises by subbing in back-up Alan Bosley (Ryan Gosling) and delivered the legendary line "You make sure they remember, forever, the night they played the Titans. Leave no doubt!"

8 Glory Road - “Take It”

The most motivational speech in the basketball film Glory Road is delivered by head coach Don Haskins (Josh Lucas) to his Texas Western basketball team as they are just two minutes from winning a national championship. In the huddle during a timeout, Haskins reminds his players that the key to winning a championship is about heart and which team wants to win the most. His inspiring speech encourages the underdog basketball team to take the victory from the established favorites since they will not hand it over simply. The speech is a declaration of the required willpower that turns competitors into champions.

7 Field Of Dreams - “People Will Come”

James Earl Jones delivers one of the most iconic speeches in all sports movies in Field of Dreams . Terence Mann (Jones) paints a portrait of what the baseball filed will inspire if Ray (Kevin Costner) builds it in his cornfield. The speech intercuts with Ray's contemplation of whether he should sell his property to ensure that he won't lose all of his financial assets. The inspirational speech creates the vision of a magical baseball field that will captivate every fan and player's attention and will ultimately prevent Ray from having to sell his beloved property. Mann memorably reminds Ray that if he builds the field, people will come.

6 Friday Night Lights - “Perfect”

Before the popular Friday Night Lights television series began, a 2004 movie of the same name starred Billy Bob Thornton as Coach Gary Gaines. Gaines delivers a brutally raw and honest speech to his team of football players that reminds them of the fleeting nature of life, encouraging them to seize the opportunity to win while they still have it. Gaines reiterates to his team at their most crucial and vulnerable moment that his notion of being "perfect" is not about winning the game, but about becoming good, reliable people through the game. It's a poignant speech that dives into how life is much bigger than any sports game.

5 We Are Marshall - “You Cannot Lose”

We Are Marshall is one of the most devastating sports films ever made with many tear-jerking moments. Coach Jack Lengyel (Matthew McConaughey) brings his college football team to the final resting place of former Marshall players and staff members who died in a tragic plane crash. In a grim yet powerful speech, Lengyel reminds his players that although their opponent is physically stronger and more efficient than them, they aren't aware of how passionate they are. Lengyel's message touches on the deepest motivation of any sports competition, which is the commitment and heart in every player and team that can fuel an underdog to victory.

4 Coach Carter - “Our Deepest Fear”

One of the most motivational speeches in sports films is surprisingly not delivered by a coach but a player. In Coach Carter , point guard Timo Cruz (Rick Gonzalez) stands up and recites a poetic monologue that demonstrates the life lessons Coach Carter (Samuel L. Jackson) had taught him during their basketball season. Cruz begins by saying, "Our deepest fear is not that we are inadequate. Our deepest fear is that we are powerful beyond measure." The moment delivers one of the rare speeches in sports movies that is applicable to philosophy and life in all areas, making it exceptionally profound even to non-sports fans.

3 Rocky Balboa - “It’s Not About How Hard You Hit”

Another beautifully constructed speech that applies to life outside the ring can be found is 2006's Rocky Balboa . Rocky (Sylvester Stallone) gives an impassioned pep talk to his son that delicately criticizes and motivates him to rise to difficult challenges. One of the most poignant parts of the speech is when Rocky says, "It ain't about how hard you can hit, but about how hard you can get hit and keep moving forward." It's an incredible message about the importance of resiliency and overcoming obstacles in order to find success and happiness in life.

2 Miracle - “Great Moments Are Born From Great Opportunity”

In Miracle , Coach Herb Brooks (Kurt Russell) delivers one of the best pre-game speeches of all time. Brooks's command of the 1980 U.S. Men's Olympic Hockey team is akin to an army general, which is appropriate given the international tensions between the United States and the Soviet Union during the Cold War at the time. Brooks's speech is focused on the unification and determination required to achieve the highest form of victory. It stresses the importance of disavowing any self-doubt in order to make the most of rare opportunities when they are given.

1 Any Given Sunday - “Life Is A Game Of Inches”

The most inspirational speech in all sports movies is performed by Al Pacino in Any Given Sunday . Coach Tony D'Amato (Pacino) gives a speech that is motivational, heartfelt, relatable, and poetic all at once, proclaiming that life itself is a game of inches that must be earned, just like football. The speech is performed like a sermon that highlights the significance of margins of error in both football and life, which makes all the differences between winning and losing. D'Amato's speech perfectly combines passion, intelligence, and philosophy to create the most inspiring sports movie speech of all time.

10 Inspirational Locker Room Speeches That Will Remind You It's More Than Just A Game

When it comes down to it, a sport is much more than just a game. You're playing for your team. You're playing for your brothers, your sisters and anyone who ever believed in you.

But when you're getting your ass whooped, sometimes it's hard to keep the faith. However as we all know, it's how you react to adversity and bounce back that measures the greatness of an individual.

The true leaders are guys who motivate those around them. And, sometimes, this needs to be vocalized just like we've seen in countless locker room speeches.

Once you master this, it can be applied to anything in life as the recipe for success is pretty much universal -- hard work and not being afraid to fail! These are 10 Inspirational Locker Room Speeches That Will Remind You It's More Than Just A Game.

Jameis Winston Fires Up Florida State

Even as a freshman for no. 1 Florida State, Jameis Winston proved his value as a leader with this brief, but epic halftime speech. Down to Clemson heading into the third, Famous Jameis reminded his brothers that they should smile. There was just no way he was letting them leave Death Valley without a win. The fact that he went on to lead his team to the victory only solidifies his status as this year's Heisman winner.

Ray Lewis Hypes Up The Stanford Men's Basketball Team

Before a 2010 NIT Tournament at Madison Square Garden, Ray Lewis surprised the Stanford basketball team by delivering them a rousing speech before tipoff. That extra motivation was all they needed as they went on to win the championship game over Minnesota.

West Virginia Coach Bill Stewart Inspires His Troops

Former West Virginia Mountaineers coach Bill Stewart died suddenly from a heart attack in May 2012 at the age of 59, but he left his mark with his team when it counted. Before a match up between Oklahoma in the 2008 Fiesta Bowl, he left no doubt what the team needed to do as the Mountaineers went on to best the Sooners to win the game. His ability to motivate the team was his biggest strength as a coach and this moment proved it. This man was a true legend.

Ed Reed At The University of Miami

Before he was patrolling NFL secondaries, Ed Reed was a legend at the college level for the Miami Hurricanes. Hurting at the half, he didn't have much else to say to his team than to try harder. Playing while injured, Ed Reed is probably the last of a dying breed of safeties who put it all out on the line. If you need any more convincing that he was born to do this, then watch this.

Les Miles Plays For Victory

Les Miles has one motive every time he takes his team out onto the field: play for victory. Dominate the opponent, play together and beat their ass. This recipe for success has been pretty solid for him as one of the top teams in the SEC as he has the power to make his team rise up to any occasion.

Chuck Pagano After Beating Cancer

After his year-long (successful) battle with cancer, Colts head coach visited the team in the locker room to thank them for their support and help when his family needed it most. Then rookie quarterback Andrew Luck had a lot to do with the team's success, but it was all 53 guys on the roster who made their 2012 season a success and building block for the team's future. His illness surely made everyone realize that they were playing for more than just themselves, but for everyone around them.

LeBron James Fires Up The Heat In The Playoffs

I'll admit, this isn't the most motivational pre-game speech of all time, but these are the words and advice of one of the best ever to play the game. LeBron James has the mental aspect of the game down as he stays focused through some of the biggest distractions to continue to perfect his game and to make others around him better. Plus he has the heart of a champion!

Tim Tebow Proves His Greatness

When it's all said and done, and we can take a step back to look at things, Tim Tebow will probably go down as the greatest college football player of all time. His time at Florida was something truly special as he literally did everything for his team on the field. But it was what we didn't see that truly separated him. His leadership was unsurpassed as he was just one of those guys who plays with his emotion and instincts, which, in most cases, got his team the win. What a shame he doesn't play in the NFL today.

Ray Lewis Gets Deep (Pause)

Ray Lewis is a master of pre-game, halftime and post-game speeches. And while former teammate Joe Flacco said some of the things he said didn't even make sense, what does he know? Defensive players always have to get jacked up for their team and Ray Lewis was the greatest at it. He dug deep into his teammate's souls to bring the best out of them and that got him a Super Bowl ring during his last year in the league.

Louisiana Coach Mark Hudspeth Goes HAM

Raging Cajuns head coach Mark Hudspeth had his team playing one of the biggest games in school history back in 2011 when they faced off against San Diego State at the SuperDome. If he weren't being so damn motivational, he could've caught a charge for grabbing and pushing his players like that. But it was all to amp them up as they got the win.

If This Epic Pre Game Speech Doesn’t Fire You Up.. Check Your Pulse

Sports and epic speeches seem to go hand in hand. If you need a hit of motivation scroll down.

One of the most motivational speeches is Al Pacino from Any Given Sunday but another epic pep talk is the pre game speech delivered by Kurt Russell in Miracle.

The film is based on the 1980 hockey Olympics match between the unbeatable Soviet Union and the huge underdogs the United States.

In the film, the United States was greatly outnumbered in size and experience.

The task before them seemed impossible.

But Kurt Russell, playing the US coach Herb Brooks, delivers the incredible miracle speech to motivate his team.

If This Epic Pre Game Speech Doesn’t Fire You Up 🔥 Check Your Pulse

Here are three lessons you can take from the iconic speech.

When It’s Your Time, Be Ready | Epic Pre Game Speech

As Herb Brooks said, “Great moments are born from great opportunity.” The best moments in sports and life always happen when a moment is seized.

Whether it’s Tom Brady stepping up to win another Super Bowl or Michael Jordan making so many clutch shots for game winners.

The reasons these moments were made was becuase they made them happen. Without hard work, consistency and dedication they would have never been able to perform on the biggest stages.

Ask yourself, are you putting in the work to set yourself up for big moments?

Are you doing the little things, day in and day out, to get the chance to shine when your opportunity arrives?

If This Epic Pre Game Speech Doesn't Fire You Up 🔥 Check Your Pulse

Quit Worrying About the Odds | Epic Pre Game Speech

As Kurt Russell said in the film, “If we played them 10 times they would win nine. But not this game. Not tonight.” If you are trying to achieve something great in your life, chances are the odds are stacked against you.

Whether you’re trying to become a professional athlete, build an epic business or win a marathon, the odds are most likely against you. That’s ok, if it was easy everyone would do it!

The problem is that so many people see the odds and don’t even try. Remember, the biggest failure in life is not trying.

When the odds are against you think to yourself how great it will feel when you defy all expectations. Don’t forget, the United States went on to complete the ultimate victory despite the odds being stacked against them.

No one in the world believed it was possible. They believed .

If This Epic Pre Game Speech Doesn't Fire You Up 🔥 Check Your Pulse

Always Believe in Yourself | Epic Pre Game Speech

Do you believe in yourself with 100% confidence? As Kurt Russell said to close the speech in Miracle, “Tonight, we are the greatest hockey team in the world.”

He gave them these final words before the Olympians took the ice. These words helped them believe in themselves.

You have to have to have 100% belief in yourself or else you’ll never make it happen. Don’t worry about people telling you that you’re not good enough, smart enough or talented enough.

Choose to believe in yourself.

If you haven’t seen the movie Miracle I highly recommend it as the movie is incredibly inspirational. Remember, miracles exist but you have to put in the work to make them happen.

If you aren’t willing to do the work when no one is watching you’ll never get your chance to be a champion.

After Harrison Butker's Commencement Speech, Women Are Flooding The Kansas City Chiefs' Instagram Account With Sarcastic "Womanly Duties" Comments You Have To See For Yourself

"I hope I can see the TV from the kitchen."

Raven Ishak

BuzzFeed Staff

On May 11th, Kansas City Chiefs kicker Harrison Butker gave a commencement address to graduates from Benedictine College . During his speech to the private Catholic liberal arts college in Kansas, he suggested Pride Month was a "deadly sin," condemned abortion rights, and informed women that they had "the most diabolical lies" told to them (after he quoted a Taylor Swift song earlier in his speech, of course).

A man in graduation robes speaks at a podium labeled "Benedictine College" at a ceremony

Harrison directly addressed the women in the crowd by saying, "How many of you are sitting here now about to cross this stage and are thinking about all the promotions and titles you are going to get in your career? Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world."

He went on to speak about his wife, Isabelle , claiming she would be the first to say that "her life truly started when she began living her vocation as a wife and as a mother" and that he was able to be the man who he is because his wife embraced one of the most important titles of all: being a homemaker.

After harrison gave his speech, it not only garnered a direct response from the nfl stating that harrison's views were not those of the nfl as an organization but also widespread backlash from people across the country. but while a lot of people have vocalized their disgust about the commencement address on their own personal social media accounts, women have begun to leave sarcastic comments about their "abilities as a woman" directly on the kansas city chiefs's instagram account — and they're brutal in the best way possible..

1. Here are some of the top comments that were left on multiple Chief's Instagram posts, like this woman who's sad she won't be able to attend any more games because of her "true vocation."

I won't be able to attend any games for another 17 years as I will be completing my true vocation of rearing my children until then

2. Or this woman who said her life hasn't begun because she's not married to a man yet.

"I don't have a husband, so I guess I can't buy tickets since my life hasn't started."

3. It seems like snack time is vital for this couple.

4. This commentor also wants some clarification.

5. A woman watching men on TV? Not in this household.

"Sorry my husband said I’m not allowed to watch men on tv I am only allowed to look at him." Timestamp "18h," with 2,544 likes and "Reply" button visible

6. Sorry, gotta skip the game, the kitchen is calling.

Harrison Butker's jersey becomes Chiefs' best-seller after controversial commencement speech

Kansas city's kicker is seeing a bump in jersey sales after a polarizing speech at benedictine college.

best game speeches

Harrison Butker currently has the top-selling jersey on the Kansas City Chiefs following the controversial statements he made during a recent commencement speech at Benedictine College. As of Friday afternoon, sales of the veteran kicker's jersey are even outpacing those of teammates Patrick Mahomes and Travis Kelce, according to the official NFL Shop .

Listed among the "Top Sellers" on the official website, Butker's No. 7 jersey has gotten quite a bump after the kicker's polarizing remarks. CBS Sports has reached out to the NFL about the specific sales numbers.

The portion of Butker's commencement speech that got the most backlash were the comments he made about women being sold "diabolical lies" regarding their professional careers.

"I think it is you, the women, who have had the most diabolic lies told to you," Butker said. "Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world. I can tell you that my beautiful wife Isabelle would be the first to say her life truly started when she started living her vocation as a wife and as a mother."

The wide-ranging speech covered a number of other hot-button topics as well, including what Butker referred to as "dangerous gender ideologies," COVID-19 and abortion.

"The bad policies and poor leadership have negatively impacted major life issues," Butker said. "Things like abortion, IVF, surrogacy, euthanasia, as well as a growing support for the degenerate cultural values and media all stem from pervasiveness of disorder."

Jonathan Beane, the NFL's senior vice president and chief diversity and inclusion officer, issued a statement to CBS News about Butker's speech. "Harrison Butker gave a speech in his personal capacity," Beane said. "His views are not those of the NFL as an organization. The NFL is steadfast in our commitment to inclusion, which only makes our league stronger."

GLAAD also issued a statement , and said Butker's speech "a clear miss" and "woefully out of step with Americans about Pride, LGBTQ people and women," alluding to Butker's suggestion that Pride Month, which is June, celebrates a "deadly sin."

While Butker got criticized for the speech, he also received support from Tavia Hunt, the wife of Chiefs owner Clark Hunt. In a post on Instagram , Tavia Hunt backed up Butker's view on motherhood. "Affirming motherhood and praising your wife, as well as highlighting the sacrifice and dedication it takes to be a mother, is not bigoted," she wrote.

‘Squid Game: The Challenge,’ Matthew Macfadyen Among Winners at BAFTA TV Awards 2024

It was a night of surprises at the BAFTA TV Awards , with “The Crown” and “Black Mirror” failing to pick up any awards while “Succession” walked away with only one for Matthew Macfadyen for best supporting actor.

Macfadyen did not attend the awards at London’s Royal Festival Hall, prompting Helena Bonham Carter, who presented the category, to walk off with the iconic gold BAFTA mask with the promise she would get it to Macfadyen.

“Strictly Come Dancing” won for entertainment, while “Squid Game: The Challenge” won an award for reality. Last year’s Eurovision Song Contest, which took place in the U.K., won for live event coverage, with Hannah Waddingham – one of the hosts last year – accepted the award along with the production team.

Sarah Lancarshire won the leading actress award for her turn in “Happy Valley.” The show also beat out David Beckham teasing his wife Victoria over her “working class” upbringing in his Netflix documentary “Beckham” to take home the award for most memorable moment.

Sunday night’s awards ceremony was hosted by comedian duo Rob Beckett and Romesh Ranganathan. The show airs as live with a two-hour delay at 7 p.m. U.K. time and will be broadcast on BBC One and online via BBC iPlayer. In the U.S. and other territories it will be available on streaming platform BritBox.

WATCH: Former Bills S Jordan Poyer delivers emotional farewell to fans

Kyle silagyi | may 19, 2024.

Bills safety Jordan Poyer on the sideline against the Jets in December 2022.

 • Buffalo Bills | News, Scores, Schedules & Standings

Moving on is never easy.

It was something the Buffalo Bills were forced to do at several positions in the 2024 offseason, however, parting ways with numerous stalwart starters in an attempt to recenter the team around younger players with more financially palatable contracts.

Among the players Buffalo parted ways with was safety Jordan Poyer, who first signed with the Bills in the 2017 offseason. Then an unproven defensive back with 10 career starts to his name, Poyer emerged as one of the league’s premier safeties in Buffalo, starting 107 games over his seven-year stint with the team. He tallied 682 tackles, 22 interceptions, and eight forced fumbles throughout his tenure, earning first-team All-Pro honors in 2021 as he became a fan favorite and an admired figure in the Western New York community.

Related: Ranking Bills 2024 NFL Draft class by potential immediate impact

Now seemingly in the twilight of his career, the 33-year-old Poyer was released by the Bills on March 6, with his departure—which corresponds with those of Micah Hyde, Tre’Davious White, Stefon Diggs, Gabriel Davis, and Mitch Morse—signaling a desire on behalf of Buffalo to reshape its core and reset its on-field clock. Poyer would ink a one-year deal with the division-rival Miami Dolphins 12 days later.

It wasn’t the storybook ending that Poyer or the Buffalo faithful had hoped for, but it’s one that he’s content with given everything the team accomplished throughout his stint. The veteran had the opportunity to give a farewell address at this year’s Micah Hyde Charity Softball Game, telling fans that he “loved every moment” of his experience before thanking Bills Mafia for “allowing him to grow as a person, player, and teammate.”

You can watch the full video of Poyer’s speech, posted by Jonah Bronstein , here:

Jordan Poyer’s farewell address to Bills fans pic.twitter.com/YnmV11cLDe — Jonah Bronstein (@lebronstein) May 19, 2024

Poyer also apologized for not being able to get the team over the proverbial hump before calling Buffalo signal-caller Josh Allen the “best quarterback in the league.”

He also expressed excitement for seeing Buffalo fans again, something he’ll do twice in the 2024 NFL season; the Bills are slated to take on the Miami Dolphins in Week 2 on Thursday Night Football and again in Week 9 at Highmark Stadium.

The Morning

Trump’s criminal trial, explained.

Figures from Donald Trump’s past have sworn an oath that could threaten his future.

Donald Trump sits next to two men and looks forward in a courtroom.

By Jonah E. Bromwich

Stormy Daniels was on the witness stand, Donald Trump was at the defense table and I could feel a queasy energy flow through the Manhattan courtroom. Daniels, an adult film star, told jurors about having sex with Trump in 2006. The former president radiated disgust, shaking his head and muttering obscenities.

I’ve been in the courtroom every day, and in today’s newsletter I want to share a bit about what it’s like to watch this spectacle unfold in person. This is the third of Trump’s trials that I’ve covered, but there’s still something striking about seeing a ubiquitous media figure in the flesh. He strides into the courtroom just before proceedings begin each morning: a real, heavily made-up person who directs grimaces, glowers and occasionally winks toward the reporters. His face falls when he thinks he is not being observed. And sometimes, when he stands up from the defense table, I can see him ready himself to face the press — jutting out his jaw before turning toward our seats.

Trump is not on trial for sleeping with Daniels, which he denies, or for paying her to keep silent. He is charged with something significantly less provocative: 34 counts of falsifying business records. Pundits have lamented the quotidian nature of the case — the only jury trial he may face before the election — given the monumental misdeeds of which he is accused elsewhere, including efforts to overturn election results. But the Manhattan district attorney says that his case, too, is about manipulating an election — the 2016 race. Prosecutors here are trying to convince jurors that Trump did something illegal by authorizing the hush-money payment and then seeking to conceal it once he was elected.

Even though it’s a documents case, the trial has thrummed with high-octane moments like his face-off with Daniels. Each time the prosecution calls a witness, rows of onlookers watch a figure from Trump’s past swear an oath that could threaten his future.

The big show

Prosecutors have called 19 witnesses to bring their story to life. They say that after Trump’s lawyer, Michael Cohen, paid Daniels to be quiet, the president and his associates concocted 34 business documents, supposedly for legal services, that actually repaid Cohen for the hush money.

Each witness performed differently on the stand.

David Pecker, the mustachioed ex-publisher of The National Enquirer, delivered damning testimony in a mild tone against a man he said he still considered a friend. At the campaign’s behest, he said, he paid other accusers not to tell their stories about Trump. Reporters nicknamed him the tabloid grandfather, for his apparently kindly manner, even as he told ruthless stories about tarring Trump’s political enemies with mocking headlines.

Daniels entered the courtroom in a long black cloak with a hood. Her testimony was riveting. She appeared nervous at first as she recalled an encounter she says she had with Trump in a Nevada hotel room. But when Trump’s lawyer rose to question her, Daniels sat up straighter and fought back. “You have a lot of experience in making phony stories about sex appear to be real,” the defense lawyer said. Daniels shot back: “The sex in the films, it’s very much real. Just like what happened to me in that room.”

Cohen, who took the stand on Monday and was still testifying yesterday, is the prosecution’s most important witness. Only he ties Trump directly to the alleged crime. On two occasions, he said, Trump acknowledged of the scheme to disguise reimbursements for the hush money. Cohen’s tale is a parable of loyalty and betrayal: He says that he turned on the former president after Trump failed to support him in 2018, when federal prosecutors originally began investigating the hush-money payment.

It’s jarring for these creatures of the attention-seeking worlds of reality television, supermarket tabloids and politics to be ensconced in a small courtroom where only a few dozen people can hear their testimony against the former president. The trial isn’t broadcast. So instead of creating a show for the cameras, their stories are enlivened by lawyers’ questioning, documentary evidence and reporters who feed their editors and producers from their laptops inside the room.

Initially, Trump pushed back on the proceedings, insulting Daniels and Cohen and suggesting the jurors were a bunch of biased Democrats. But the judge has forbidden Trump from talking about witnesses or jurors, fined him $10,000 for violating the order and threatened to send him to jail. Since then, in the courtroom, Trump has seemed diminished. Silence does not suit him. Seated at the defense table for hours on end, he has often shut his eyes, blocking out the courtroom where 12 New Yorkers will soon determine his future.

More from court yesterday:

Trump’s lawyer aggressively questioned Cohen , trying to undermine his credibility by confronting him about his past lies.

The defense also accused Cohen of lying about a 2016 phone call in which he claimed to have spoken to Trump about the hush-money payment to Stormy Daniels. “I believe I spoke to Mr. Trump,” Cohen responded, remaining mostly unfazed.

The jury heard audio of Cohen celebrating Trump’s indictment on his podcast, saying he hoped Trump “rots inside.” Prosecutors repeatedly objected to the defense’s questions.

Several right-wing House Republicans were at the courthouse to support Trump . “Standing back and standing by, Mr. President,” Matt Gaetz wrote on social media, a reference to Trump’s 2020 remarks about the Proud Boys, who later stormed the Capitol.

On late night, Seth Meyers mocked the Republicans supporting Trump at his trial .

Trump plans to attend his son Barron’s high-school graduation today, and the trial will resume next week. The judge told lawyers to prepare to make closing arguments by Tuesday.

Music baffles evolutionary scientists. They ask: Did our ancestors sing to attract mates? Or is music a product of culture? There isn’t an answer yet. But in a new study, researchers found universal features of songs across many cultures, suggesting that music evolved in our distant ancestors.

“It shows us that there may be really something that is universal to all humans that cannot simply be explained by culture,” said Daniela Sammler, a neuroscientist. Read more about where music may come from .

Patricia Heaton defends Harrison Butker after commencement speech: ‘He’s not a monster’

Thanks for contacting us. We've received your submission.

Patricia Heaton has joined Kansas City Chiefs heiress Gracie Hunt in defending kicker Harrison Butker following his sexist and homophobic commencement speech .

The “Everybody Loves Raymond” alum said in an Instagram video Saturday that she was confused by the outrage Butker received online because “the audience applauded twice during the speech and gave him a standing ovation at the end.”

Heaton, 66, said the NFL player, who spoke at Benedictine College in Kansas on May 11, had every right to share his doctrine at the private Catholic school.

“So what? It’s his opinion. He can have one,” she said. “He’s not a monster for stating what he believes.

“He went after bishops much more than he went after women, or what women’s choices are, or what he thinks they should be — so, I don’t understand.”

The Emmy winner spoke about her own Christian beliefs as a working mother, telling viewers that she found “nothing offensive” about Butker’s comments despite knowing he could “even look at my life and say that’s not the way it should be.”

“If you have made choices in your life and you feel those are the right choices and you’re comfortable and they’re working out for you and your family, great,” she said, “and if they’re different from his, that’s great.”

During the inflammatory speech, the pro athlete, 28, described Pride Month as emblematic of “the deadly sins” and told women their “most important title” would be “homemaker.”

“Some of you may go on to lead successful careers in the world, but I would venture to guess that the majority of you are most excited about your marriage and the children you will bring into this world,” he said.

The commencement speech caught the ire of the NFL , journalist Maria Shriver and fellow football players .

“As a girl dad, I will do everything I can to create the best world for my daughter to live in and that world does not include toxic masculinity,” free agent Isaac Rochell shared in a statement via Instagram Stories.

“As men and husbands, it’s our responsibility, just like our wives to support our partners’ vocational aspirations.”
