Good morning, everyone in attendance. Greetings! My name is XYZ. Today, I will give a speech in honour of World Pharmacists Day.

Every year on September 25, World Pharmacists Day is observed to honour pharmacists for their contributions to global health. The goal of the annual Pharmacists Day is to promote and advocate for the role of pharmacists in improving health in every corner of the world.

The International Pharmaceutical Federation council in Istanbul established World Pharmacists Day in 2009. This is the 11th year that the world has observed Pharmacists Day.

The theme of World Pharmacists Day in 2022 is “Pharmacy united in action for a healthier world.” This year’s theme aims to highlight pharmacy’s positive impact on health around the world while also strengthening professional solidarity.

September 25 was chosen as the date for World Pharmacists Day because the International Pharmaceutical Federation was founded on this day in 1912; thus, it was only natural that the Turkish members of the council proposed in 2009 that September 25 be observed as World Pharmacists Day.

Pharmacy is the practice that connects medicinal science and chemistry, and it plays a vital role in modern society. Pharmacists are in charge of medication and drug discovery, production, disposal, safe and effective use, and control. The world would not have safe medicines and drugs to rely on if pharmacists did not have a thorough understanding of drugs, their side effects, mobility, and toxicity.

World Pharmacists Day encourages the global community to recognise the value of pharmacists in society and to raise awareness through activities that promote and advocate for their role in improving global health.

You can modify the above-mentioned speech on World Pharmacist Day day for students to suit your needs and prepare your own short World Pharmacists Day speech.

When you think of a pharmacist, you probably picture the person behind the counter who fills your prescription. These pharmacists work long hours, usually while standing. In addition to dispensing pills and providing medication advice, pharmacists also administer immunizations. Research pharmacists discover and test new medications.

Pharmacists are considered medicine experts regardless of their position. These experts have a lot of power in the medical field. It is their responsibility to ensure that medicine is both effective and safe. They must be familiar with each type of medication as well as the various forms it can take. Liquids, tablets, capsules, topical medications, drops, inhalers, and injections are all available. They must also understand how various medications interact with one another. It’s no surprise that becoming a pharmacist requires eight years of college!

Here are a few more fascinating facts about pharmacists:

  • Pharmacists invented Coca-Cola, Pepsi, Dr Pepper, and Ginger Ale.
  • Benjamin Franklin and Hubert Humphrey were both famous pharmacists.
  • In 1928, Alexander Fleming discovered penicillin, which changed the world.

Dr Joseph DiPiro, the author of the pharmacy textbook Pharmacotherapy: A Pathophysiologic Approach, is the most well-known pharmacist in the world.

Many people, including students, are perplexed as to why Pharmacist Day is observed on September 25. On September 25, 1912, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP), a global federation of national associations of pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, was founded. In 2009, the FIP Council in Istanbul, Turkey, proposed observing Pharmacist Day on September 25 because FIP was founded on this date. As a result, we observe World Pharmacist Day on September 25.

For World Pharmacy Day, the pharmaceutical industry hosts a variety of educational activities. Lectures, exhibitions, and activities demonstrating how pharmacies help adults and children are among them.

To commemorate World Pharmacist Day, thank your local pharmacist for all that they do. Use the hashtag #WorldPharmacistDay to share this day on social media.

World Pharmacist Day – September 25, 2024

World Pharmacist Day on September 25 is a celebration of every pharmacist, pharmaceutical scientist, and others who are part of this field. Four million people are engaged in this profession around the globe. World Pharmacists Day is thus not only a welcome event, but it is also a crucial holiday to honor the role these guys play in improving global health outcomes. The day is marked by events and activities sponsored by various governmental and non-governmental organizations. Globally, they all have one common goal — to increase awareness about pharmacists and their roles.

History of World Pharmacist Day

The ancient art of pharmacy probably began when someone somewhere first thought of applying the juice from leaves to heal a wound. There have also been Greek legends written centuries ago that spoke of gods being apothecaries or pharmacists. The Greek god of healing, Asclepius, delegated the compounding of his remedies to Hygieia, his apothecary or pharmacist.

For the longest time, healing and pharmacy went hand-in-hand and were often thought of as the same practice. The line between pharmacy and medicine began to be defined by the eighth century and was firmly established by the time the 17th century rolled along. Now, physicians could no longer prepare medications for their patients themselves. The field transformed yet again with the onslaught of World War II. New drugs were constantly introduced into the market, and the role of the pharmacist became more defined than ever.

Today’s pharmacist performs multiple vital duties. Their tasks include identifying and providing people with the right medication, overseeing stocking and restocking of medicines, and staying ahead of medicine expiry dates. This is probably why the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) established this day to honor all pharmacists. The premier global body to represent all pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists, the FIP aims to support the pharmacist network and the development of this profession. The reason behind the date for the annual celebrations can also be traced back to the FIP. According to the founders of this day, they wanted to honor the organization that was doing so much for pharmacists. This is why they picked the date the FIP was established — September 25, 1912.

World Pharmacist Day timeline

Backed by King James I and used by the Royal College of Physicians, the book “Pharmacopoeia Londinensis” names and controls the sale of medicines.

The very first college to train pharmacists in America is the 'The Philadelphia College of Pharmacy' — now called Philadelphia College of Pharmacy and Science.

Cyanide-laced Tylenol capsules kill seven people in Chicago after which tamper-resistant packaging becomes the new norm for pharmaceutical companies.

The RIVA robotic device automatically prepares medicines, setting new pharmaceutical safety standards and reducing the chances of human error.

At the International Pharmaceutical Federation's council meeting in Turkey, members float an idea to celebrate all pharmacists by founding a special World Pharmacists Day.

You might wonder why we need a day for pharmacists. Well, it’s to appreciate their hard work and dedication. They are our healthcare heroes, and this day is all about them!

1-minute Speech on Pharmacist Day

Ladies and Gentlemen,

Today we gather to celebrate a day dedicated to a profession that silently works in the background of our healthcare system, yet plays an impactful role in our lives. Today, we recognize the diligence and dedication of our pharmacists. Happy Pharmacist Day to all!

Pharmacists are more than just dispensers of medication. They are the bridge between us and our physicians, providing us with critical insights about the medicines that we consume. They ensure that we understand the implications of the medication, its side effects, and the way to use it properly. They are our first point of contact in times of health emergencies and are as crucial as doctors for maintaining public health.

What truly makes a pharmacist stand out is their dedication to their work. Despite the long hours and endless array of medicines they deal with daily, they never fail to greet us with a warm smile. They are always ready to listen, explain, and clarify our doubts. They are compassionate, patient, and most importantly, knowledgeable.

On this day, let us acknowledge their remarkable contribution to our society. Let’s express our heartfelt gratitude for their unwavering commitment to our wellbeing. Let us remember to thank them not just today, but every time we visit a pharmacy.

So here’s to all pharmacists out there, your work is invaluable, and you deserve this day of recognition. Happy Pharmacist Day! Let us continue to honor and respect their pivotal role in our healthcare journey.

2-minute Speech on Pharmacist Day

I stand before you today to talk about a day that recognizes a profession which is often overlooked, yet plays a fundamental role in our healthcare system – the ‘Pharmacist Day’. For those who are unaware, Pharmacist Day is celebrated on the 25th of September each year, underlining the invaluable contributions that pharmacists make to our societies.

Pharmacists, the unsung heroes of the medical world. They are the bridge between patients and doctors, ensuring the right medications reach the right people at the right time. Their role is far more than just dispensing prescriptions. They provide advice on the safe use of prescriptions and over-the-counter medications, educate patients about potential side effects, and even administer immunizations.

Pharmacists are at the frontline of our healthcare system. They often serve as the first point of contact when we fall ill, providing us with immediate care and guiding us to the appropriate health resources. They play an essential role in managing chronic diseases, overseeing medication therapies, and improving patients’ quality of life.

Moreover, they significantly contribute to public health by promoting healthy lifestyles and disease prevention. To all the pharmacists around the globe, your tireless efforts in making a difference in healthcare, your dedication to ensuring patients’ safety, your commitment to education, and your passion for community service are deeply appreciated.

World Pharmacist Day: Celebrating the changing face of modern pharmacy to create healthier futures

speech on world pharmacist day

AmerisourceBergen - September 25, 2022

Pharmacists from across the globe have shared their thoughts on the changing role of pharmacy as part of celebrations to mark International Pharmaceutical Federation (F IP) World Pharmacist Day 2022.

27 pharmacists from across the globe within the AmerisourceBergen family, have contributed to a digital book of celebration, which aims to highlight the changing role of pharmacists and how they can create healthier futures. Pharmacists are no longer just ‘chemists’ – some pharmacists are now able to diagnose, treat and prescribe for patients who traditionally may have needed to see a doctor or GP. Others are guardians of their local community – keeping an eye on vulnerable patients who may not have regular contact with other healthcare professionals. During the COVID-19 pandemic they stepped up to support stretched healthcare systems, with many taking a leading role in the world-wide response. This has evolved further with more and more pharmacists offering vaccination services for COVID-19, as well as flu, chicken pox and ‘holiday’ vaccinations. This changing role of pharmacists is helping them unite to create healthier futures.

Richard Tremonte, EVP & President, US Pharmaceuticals & Animal Health at AmerisourceBergen said: “As a business we’re united in our responsibilities to create healthier futures and we support pharmacists across the globe. Pharmacy is changing – it’s an innovative profession and service that can offer holistic healthcare support, which will ultimately help us create a healthier world.

“The resounding message from every pharmacist we spoke to as part of our digital book of celebration is that pharmacists have more to give – to their patients, their communities and to their healthcare systems. The book is a testament to the continued evolution of pharmacy that has escalated even in spite of the challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our pharmacy customers have cemented their role as capable, trusted and accessible providers that deliver exceptional patient care through meaningful health and wellness services beyond dispensing.

“We take our role in supporting pharmacists and pharmacy seriously’ said Juan Guerra, SVP and Managing Director at Alliance Healthcare.  “Through our professional Alphega Pharmacy and Good Neighbor Pharmacy networks, our pharmacists have access to Business Mentors and specialist advisors who can support pharmacists as they look to expand and diversify their businesses. Not only that, but our wholesaler arm ensures they have timely access to the medications that are life saving for their patients.”

The book, which was developed as part celebrations for the International Federation of Pharmacists’ (FIP) World Pharmacist Day, which this year is focusing on “pharmacy united in action for a healthier world” - also highlights how pharmacists have a key role in creating a healthier world and keeping our communities fit and healthy.

“We know that the key to a healthier world is illness prevention” continued Guerra . “The pharmacists featured in our first digital book show clearly how their role is uniquely placed to do this. Pharmacists are often the first port of call for a mum worried about a rash on their young baby or they may notice a regular customer has a new lingering cough and suggest they may need some treatment. In many countries, pharmacies are administering vaccines, carrying out basic diagnostic testing, supporting patients to quit smoking, and providing a signpost service for patients requiring additional advice and support. Pharmacists provide a vital community service – everywhere.

“Helping patients to get the healthcare they need before it becomes an emergency is becoming a clear part of the modern role of pharmacy and pharmacists, and I am delighted that our book celebrates a new era for pharmacists across the globe.”

You can read the digital book in full here: https://www.supportingpharmacy.com/  as well as watch a video from our pharmacists wishing colleagues around the globe a Happy World Pharmacist Day!

Celebrating World Pharmacists Day 2022

Happy World Pharmacists Day!

Today we celebrate the 12 th annual World Pharmacists Day – a day celebrating pharmacists around the world. This year’s theme celebrates how the profession is united for health, regardless of and overcoming conflict, different politics and cultures, and economic disparity .

With this year’s theme in mind, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy would like to recognize a few of the many ways our pharmacy educators, researchers, and learners are uniting for health. Additionally, we thank all our partners as they work to address global health and educate the next generation of pharmacists at home and around the world. The below student-centered initiatives all support the University’s strategic plan, Carolina Next , which highlights the importance of strengthening global partnerships, bringing the world to Carolina for global programming, and guaranteeing a global education for all students, as outlined in S trategic Initiative 7: Globalize.

Below you will find both local and global examples of how we have united for health despite barriers to achieve elements of UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy’s strategic plan, BEYOND . These examples highlight how our educators, researchers, students, and practitioners are serving pharmacy learners at home and around the world.

We are thrilled to highlight a few student-centered local and global collaborations and initiatives in honor of World Pharmacist Day 2021:

  •  Building upon a pilot Vaccine Champion curriculum , developed at PharmAlliance partner University College London School of Pharmacy, a team of pharmacy students and faculty mentors improved and expanded the workshop to reach five countries in the last year. The project team adapted the curriculum for each site to address differences in vaccine hesitancy trends for each locale. The curriculum was delivered to student pharmacists and trainees at UNC, University College London (United Kingdom), Monash University (Australia), UNC-Project Malawi (Malawi), and Université Paris-Saclay (France). Student leaders presented the expanded project’s results at the 80th FIP World Congress of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences 2022 in Seville, Spain.
  • After a long pause due to the COVID-19 pandemic, The Office of Global Engagement has begun sending and receiving students again in 2022! We have welcomed two student pharmacists from Keio University (Japan) and three student pharmacists from University College London in September 2022. Additionally, UNC has sent 6 students through our Global Pharmacy Scholars to sites including Keio University (Japan) and UNC-Project Malawi (Malawi). We have plans to continue sending students to more sites in 2023. UNC Project Malawi Research Pharmacist and UNC preceptor, Hanna Kumwenda, commented, “ I’m really excited to have UNC students back. They help run our ward-based pharmacy services AND they are a selling point for Malawian pharmacy interns when the interns select their sites.” Our partners have re-ignited these exchanges as we all recognize the shared responsibility for educating the next generation of globally-minded pharmacists.
  • Our Innovations and Transformations in Pharmaceutical Sciences (ITPS) conducted another successful year of educating student pharmacists and pharmaceutical scientists. This year, we accepted a generous donation from Deerfield Foundation that funded scholarships for 28 international pharmacists from Malawi to attend ITPS free of charge. This brought improved geographic and cultural diversity to the ITPS program, which enriched the experience for all attendees and lecturers.

As seen through the great initiatives highlighted above, the UNC Eshelman School of Pharmacy is united in action for a healthier community locally and globally through the work of our students, faculty, staff, and partners. On World Pharmacists Day, the school would again like to recognize all pharmacists and pharmacy trainees committed to improving health around the world.

Role of 'Medicine Experts' to Be Highlighted on World Pharmacists Day

World Pharmacists Day is being celebrated Tuesday around the globe.

World Pharmacists Day is being celebrated Tuesday around the globe. First designated in 2009 by the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) Council in Istanbul, Turkey, the day is being utilized to encourage pharmacists to promote and advocate for their profession.

The role of the pharmacist in improving health around the world is a focus of this year's World Pharmacists Day. The 2018 theme for the designated day is “Pharmacists: your medicines experts.”

“This year, we focus on the extensive expertise that pharmacists have and put to use every day to ensure better patient health. This expertise is applied through science and research, through educating the next generation, and through transforming patient needs into services,” said the FIP’s Immediate Past President Dr. Carmen Peña, in a prepared statement.

Peña noted that the theme of World Pharmacists Day emphasizes that pharmacists are a trusted source of knowledge and advice, not only for patients but for other healthcare professionals.

“For every patient who walks into a pharmacy, pharmacists ensure that the right medicine is provided at the right dose and in the most suitable formulation. We work with other healthcare professionals to ensure that every individual receives optimal treatment. Moreover, as one of the most accessible health care professionals globally, we use our learning to protect health and prevent illness,” Peña added.

Pharmacist resources for promoting World Pharmacists Day are available on the FIP website .

“Pharmacists: Meeting global health needs” is the theme of World Pharmacists Day on 25 September 2024.

Some of the solutions proposed by these strategies, aligning with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, are: strengthening health systems (including improving access to primary health care), preventing health risks, and preparing for and responding to health crises.

Pharmacists serve as integral members of healthcare systems, playing a vital role in meeting health needs. First and foremost, they ensure access to essential medicines and their optimal use, but they also use their expertise to contribute significantly to patient care and public health. In many places, pharmacists are the first point of contact for health advice and primary health care, especially in resource-limited settings. They help prevent diseases (e.g, through administering vaccinations); they conduct health screening, educate patients and help to improve health literacy; they support public health campaigns, participate in research and development of new medicines, lead in pharmacovigilance and make sure that antibiotics are used only when needed; they are implementing greener ways of working and addressing the impact of climate change on health; and they advocate for policy changes that promote better health outcomes. And, as demonstrated during the COVID-19 pandemic, pharmacists are at the forefront of addressing global health crises.

In many and diverse ways, every day the pharmacy profession meets health needs. The FIP World Pharmacists Day campaign is a means for the profession to celebrate and make known the contributions it makes to better health around the world. It is also an opportunity to highlight our further potential in improving global health. We invite colleagues in every country to join us in marking World Pharmacists Day, reminding decision-makers and the public how the role of pharmacists in meeting health needs remains crucial for building healthier communities everywhere.

Join the FIP campaign

World Pharmacists Day (25 September) marks the anniversary of the inception of FIP in 1912 and was adopted by the FIP Council in 2009. As such, the World Pharmacists Day campaign is led by FIP every year, with the theme chosen by the FIP Bureau. In 2020, FIP also created World Pharmacy Week, extending the celebrations of the entire profession and overtly encompassing all sectors of the pharmacy profession. Any reference to “World Pharmacists Day” or “World Pharmacy Week” should, therefore, include FIP. As a service to the profession, FIP develops and offers a range of World Pharmacists Day / World Pharmacy Week campaign materials for use each year. World Pharmacists Day 2024

World Pharmacists Day 2024

Congratulations and sincere thanks to the Pharmacists

All over the world for your daily great work.

On the 25th of September is the annual World Pharmacists Day. 2024 year’s theme is “ Pharmacists: Meeting global health needs “.

Why this theme?

The pharmacy profession fulfills health requirements in many ways on a daily basis. The FIP World Pharmacists Day initiative, titled “Pharmacists: Meeting global health needs” serves as a platform for the profession to commemorate its contributions to enhancing health worldwide. Moreover, it presents an occasion to underscore our capacity for further enhancing global health outcomes.

The International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) invites colleagues from all sectors of the pharmacy profession to take part in the campaign and reminding decision-makers and the public how the role of pharmacists in meeting health needs remains crucial for building healthier communities everywhere.

World Pharmacists Day

25th september 2024.

The global health landscape is increasingly complex and interconnected, emphasizing the necessity of promoting good health and robust, sustainable healthcare systems worldwide while addressing health disparities. The COVID-19 pandemic underscored this imperative. Consequently, many countries and organizations have devised new global health strategies aimed at tackling pressing challenges both current and future. These challenges encompass issues such as limited access to healthcare, shortages of medical professionals, antimicrobial resistance, climate change, air pollution, HIV, and emerging infectious diseases.

Aligned with the United Nations Sustainable Development Goals, these strategies propose various solutions, including: strengthening health systems (including improving access to primary health care), preventing health risks, and preparing for and responding to health crises.

FIP’s message for World Pharmacists Day 2024 is clear: Pharmacists: Meeting global health needs

Why is there a celebration called World Pharmacist Day?

The purpose of World Pharmacists Day, which was brought to life at the FIP Council 2009 in Istanbul, is to encourage activities that promote and advocate for the role of the pharmacist in improving health in every corner of the world. Pharmacists are the reason why people get the best from their medicines, they are using their experience, knowledge, and expertise to make the (medical) world a better place for everybody. Moreover, they give access to medicines, advise people on how to properly take them and so much more.

Since 2020, the FIP has also launched World Pharmacy Week to extend the celebrations to include all aspects of the pharmacy profession.

Why is it celebrated on September 25?

The Turkish members of FIP suggested the Date because the FIP was established on the same day in 1912.

We prepared an infographic on some more interesting figures around the World Pharmacists Day : (click to enlarge the infographic)

What is the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP)?

The founder of World Pharmacists Day, the International Pharmaceutical Federation (FIP) is the global body representing pharmacy, pharmaceutical sciences, and pharmaceutical education. Through their 144 national organisations, academic institutional members and individual members, they represent millions of pharmacists, pharmaceutical scientists and pharmaceutical educators around the world. FIP is a non-governmental organisation with its head office in the Netherlands. Through their partnerships and extensive pharmacy and pharmaceutical sciences network, they work to support the development of the pharmacy profession, through practice and emerging scientific innovations, and through developing the pharmacy workforce in order to meet the world’s health care needs and expectations.

Where is the word “pharmacy” actually coming from?

Some of the oldest pharmaceutical records were found in Egypt from the year 2900 B.C. The “Papyrus Ebers”, a collection of 800 prescriptions mentioning 700 drugs, dates back to around 1500 B.C. The “Father of Pharmacy” is Aelius Galenius aka Galen of Pergamon a Greek physician, surgeon and philosopher in the Roman empire. His name is still associated with galenicals.
