Applicants to UBC have access to a variety of funding options, including merit-based (i.e. based on your academic performance) and need-based (i.e. based on your financial situation) opportunities.
The Department of Zoology has a minimum funding policy for all Graduate students. Support will be in the form of a combination of Teaching Assistantships (TA), awards/scholarship, or Graduate Research Assistantships (GRA) paid from the supervisor’s research grants. The minimum level of support will include any tuition costs not covered by another source.
Please review our detailed funding information .
Award Deadlines: December 1: NSERC CGSM Fellowship Mid-January: 4 Year Fellowship or Zoology Graduate Fellowship
All applicants are encouraged to review the awards listing to identify potential opportunities to fund their graduate education. The database lists merit-based scholarships and awards and allows for filtering by various criteria, such as domestic vs. international or degree level.
Many professors are able to provide Research Assistantships (GRA) from their research grants to support full-time graduate students studying under their supervision. The duties constitute part of the student's graduate degree requirements. A Graduate Research Assistantship is considered a form of fellowship for a period of graduate study and is therefore not covered by a collective agreement. Stipends vary widely, and are dependent on the field of study and the type of research grant from which the assistantship is being funded.
Graduate programs may have Teaching Assistantships available for registered full-time graduate students. Full teaching assistantships involve 12 hours work per week in preparation, lecturing, or laboratory instruction although many graduate programs offer partial TA appointments at less than 12 hours per week. Teaching assistantship rates are set by collective bargaining between the University and the Teaching Assistants' Union .
Academic Assistantships are employment opportunities to perform work that is relevant to the university or to an individual faculty member, but not to support the student’s graduate research and thesis. Wages are considered regular earnings and when paid monthly, include vacation pay.
Canadian and US applicants may qualify for governmental loans to finance their studies. Please review eligibility and types of loans .
All students may be able to access private sector or bank loans.
Many foreign governments provide support to their citizens in pursuing education abroad. International applicants should check the various governmental resources in their home country, such as the Department of Education, for available scholarships.
The possibility to pursue work to supplement income may depend on the demands the program has on students. It should be carefully weighed if work leads to prolonged program durations or whether work placements can be meaningfully embedded into a program.
International students enrolled as full-time students with a valid study permit can work on campus for unlimited hours and work off-campus for no more than 20 hours a week.
A good starting point to explore student jobs is the UBC Work Learn program or a Co-Op placement .
Students with taxable income in Canada may be able to claim federal or provincial tax credits.
Canadian residents with RRSP accounts may be able to use the Lifelong Learning Plan (LLP) which allows students to withdraw amounts from their registered retirement savings plan (RRSPs) to finance full-time training or education for themselves or their partner.
Please review Filing taxes in Canada on the student services website for more information.
Applicants have access to the cost estimator to develop a financial plan that takes into account various income sources and expenses.

2024 | Dr. Kinney investigated how rapid environmental changes influence evolution in hybrid populations. Using threespine stickleback fish, she showcased the pivotal role of ecological selection in shaping hybrid populations, improving our understanding of the fragility of reproductive isolation. This work advances our insights into hybrid evolution. |
2024 | Dr. Askelson studied how one species evolves into multiple species over time. He discovered that white-breasted nuthatches, which have been treated as a single species, in fact consist of three distinct species. Dr. Askelson showed that hybridization and gene flow has shaped dramatic patterns of differentiation across these birds' genomes. |
2024 | Dr. Liu investigated the evolutionary mechanisms underlying freshwater adaptation in ancestrally marine fish. She found that both local habitats and time since marine isolation play a role in the responses to varied salinities in prickly sculpin. Her study provides a possible explanation for how marine fish diversified and colonized fresh water. |
2024 | Dr. Hendi revealed a novel function of a gap junction protein that negatively regulates the formation of synapses in the nematode Caenorhabditis elegans. This research advances our understanding of the mechanisms required for the precise formation and development of the nervous system. |
2024 | Dr. Blanchard investigated how early life-stages of fishes cope with temperature variation during development, spanning from the molecular to physiological levels. The findings from her thesis offer fundamental insights that help in our understanding of how developing embryos will cope with climate change. |
2023 | Dr. Emry examined how the distribution of marine species across environmental gradients mediates response to climate change. She found that species often respond to abiotic stress in ways that correlate with their environmental conditions, and that the indirect effects of this stress can have significant impacts on the structure of communities. |
2023 | Dr. Clayworth studied how glial cells in the nervous system wrap and protect neurons. She found a novel role for the dystroglycan protein, which is disrupted in muscular dystrophy, in glial wrapping of neurons. Her work improves our understanding of the mechanisms of glial protection of neurons and their potential involvement in muscular dystrophy. |
2023 | Dr. Davis studied the effects of temperature and resource availability on ecosystem functioning. She showed that rates of nitrogen supply usually accelerate with warming, and documented two important ecological effects of this pattern. She also identified a key limiting resource in a seagrass ecosystem recovering from decline. |
2023 | Dr. Nelson's work focussed on the role of the carbonic anhydrase enzyme within the unique respiratory system responsible for the success of the teleost fishes. Her work advances our understanding of the function, development, and evolution of a respiratory system present in half of all vertebrate species. |
2023 | Dr. Kim's research focused on mechanisms that reduce metabolic rate in small hibernating rodents. These comparative studies take us one step closer to understanding and utilizing naturally occurring biological phenomena for biomedical advancement. |

Our program emphasizes Integrative Biology, with integration accomplished through a focus on the theoretical foundations provided by evolutionary biology and ecology. Our faculty has expertise in ecology, evolution, behavior, comparative and environmental physiology, genetics, development, and phylogenetics. We work in a variety of terrestrial and aquatic environments and geographic regions (tropics through subpolar), and on a range of organisms (including plants). Our faculty value integrative research (e.g., by crossing levels of organization from gene expressions to species interactions), linking theory with data (through use of statistical and mathematical tools), and using natural history to guide the development and testing of rigorous conceptual frameworks. Many of our faculty also are interested in applying and testing basic science in applied contexts (e.g., conservation biology and ecotoxicology).
Our approach is highlighted through our first-year, required, graduate course, Integrative Principles. Each student’s supervisory committee will recommend additional courses according to the academic background and research plans of the student.
Requirements for these degrees are given in the Graduate Degrees section of this catalog.

Postgraduate Study
The Department of Zoology is home to a community of researchers from a great diversity of disciplines, ranging from cell and developmental biology to field ecology and conservation. Evolutionary biology is a major focus of our work. We share an interest in whole organisms, and in how systems interact across different levels of organisation to generate the complexity of form, function and behaviour that is observed in the living world. Much of our work is underpinned by questions about evolution and an appreciation of the importance of the interactions between living organisms and their environments.
The PhD degree is a minimum of three years of full-time research with an individual supervisor. At the end of their degree, students will produce a written thesis, which will be assessed by independent experts, and examined with a viva. This is the principal research degree offered in the Department of Zoology and the great majority of our students are registered for it.
Students are supervised by at least one member of the academic staff who is an expert in the student's field of study. Supervisors support students in developing an independent and novel project in their field of interest. Students will learn how to review relevant literature, to phrase and answer scientific questions, and to report their findings to the scientific community, at conferences and through peer-reviewed scientific publications. We very much encourage students to get experience in undergraduate teaching, which can be either as demonstrators during practical classes or supervisors teaching small groups.
At the end of their first year of study, students are required to pass a first-year assessment, based on a detailed progress report examined by viva by the student’s thesis advisory committee. At the end of the second year and third year, a brief report (without viva) is required to ensure satisfactory progress toward the timely completion of the PhD degree.
Most candidates taking this option start in October, to take advantage of Departmental and University induction programmes, but admission in January or April is also possible.
Please note: part-time study may not always be viable and will be considered on a case-by-case basis, so please discuss this option with your proposed supervisor before making an application for this mode of study.
By the end of the programme, students will have:
a comprehensive understanding of techniques, and a thorough knowledge of the literature, applicable to their own research;
demonstrated originality in the application of knowledge, together with a practical understanding of how research and enquiry are used to create and interpret knowledge in their field;
shown abilities in the critical evaluation of current research and research techniques and methodologies; and
demonstrated some self-direction and originality in tackling and solving problems, and acted autonomously in the planning and implementation of research.
The Postgraduate Virtual Open Day usually takes place at the end of October. It’s a great opportunity to ask questions to admissions staff and academics, explore the Colleges virtually, and to find out more about courses, the application process and funding opportunities. Visit the Postgraduate Open Day page for more details.
See further the Postgraduate Admissions Events pages for other events relating to Postgraduate study, including study fairs, visits and international events.

Course curriculum overview :.
I opted for zoology because of its well known professor and excellent on going projects and research work The curriculum prepares us well as in this department some specialised subjects are taught,eg- immunology and Ecology, and benefits in knowing the Himalayas conservation. There are no areas of improvement as everything happens in well manared and on time. Exams are organised every week .
Tuition fees are well balanced and students of every family irrespective of poor and rich can get admission. Admission fees are around 6000-7000 Hostel admission is one time payment that is around 3000. Scholarship are available for meritorious students.and also given by NSP as per eligibility.
I Chose this Ph.D. zoology course because I am very attached to animals and always want to become a zoologist and want to serve India. I wanted to you have the best biodiversity in India. The wonderful teacher is available here and they are all having 7 to 8 years of teaching experience. All teacher present here have already completed their Ph.D. in zoology. The teaching method of teachers is incredible and the best understanding method they apply for us. Exam held two times in a year. The difficulty of the examination is moderate and not so difficult.
After completing the eighth-semester students are eligible for campus placement and so many companies also offer the placement. We usually got 2 to 3 placement offers in 6 months. We get the placement from the best company like Samsung Micromax and tata. Their average package is 10 to 15 lakh but the highest package they offered a so is 2 crore. Literally, 60 to 80% of students get placement after completing the course. After getting the degree I want to do the job in an iPhone company.
Campus life :.
There are no official clubs in the campus. However, our campus can boast of its monstrosity. It's huge and luscious with many playgrounds and fields. There are badminton, volleyball, cricket grounds. There is one Gymkhana too but it's a little ill equipped. There is also provision for swimming classes and also to learn various other languages. One can learn singing or dancing from the professors of the Arts Department separately. There is a museum within the campus too. The university has a huge library. It's spacious with an ancient feel but has modern facilities. Almost any book will be available there. There are libraries in the department separately. The classrooms has the traditional blackboards as well as projectors. Lab facilities are commendable too.The institute of science conducts an Annual fest Akanksha. All the other facuties (Arts, Management, etc) have different fests. Then there is a whole University fest with winning participants from the separate fests. Saraswati puja is celebrated with grandeur.
I had obtained my graduation and post graduation in Zoology. Being the mother subject it gives students the knowledge about every branch of life sciences. So one can quickly recognise which sub stream they want to pursue. But the drawback is, it is not entirely application based and would take effort and building your own skills to apply in industries. We were blessed to have studied under the guidance of brilliant teachers. All were doctorates. Never are all faculties amazing but most of them were. Opting for cytogenetics special paper gave me the opportunity to have hands on experience with all major experiments. There are mid terms and final exams per semester. There was huge syllabus for the second year. But if the class and textbooks are followed it is fairly easy to pass.
I chose this course because I want to do some research in the field of biology. The faculty students ratio is almost 1:20 for B.Sc. Students and for MSc students, it is 1:7 and for PhD students, it is 1:4. The facilities are well qualified all are with their PhD degrees and some of them have foreign degrees. They are very well qualified and the teaching method is fantastic. It is very difficult to pass the midterms and end sems because if you do not study well the chances of getting passed will be very low. The exam pattern is 2 midterms and one end sem per semester. And for PhD first a six months course work than research work for 4 and half years.
There are very least functions are celebrated by the university. An annual fest i.e, Gour Jayanti is celebrated every year on the 26th of November. The central library is a huge library with having a huge number of books. Probably 2nd largest library in India. Many books and journals are available in the library. Many classrooms are well maintained and most of them are converted to smart classes. The annual sports occurs every year. Cricket tournaments also occur every year. Gour Gaurav Utsav is one of the finest celebrations that occurred here in 2019.
There were several options for the Master of science course but I opt for M.Sc in Zoology as it was my dream to know about the bio-diversity and the cell biology of various species on the planet. The M.Sc is a two-year post-graduation certification there were two main exams per year and the results published on the college website.
There are several extracurricular activities fro the relaxation of students for routine study. A sports complex is built on campus so that every student can access it and play several sports. Laboratories were well built and there was all the necessary equipment that students required for experimental purposes.
Labs of our college is well-furnished and maintained to meet the expectations and needs of the students. Our college also has sports team which takes part in different competitions. The library of our college is also very updated.
A total fees of Rs. 85,500/- is charged by the college for the 3 Years Full-Time Ph.D. Program. The fees according to me is very obviously an affordable one. Compared to other colleges, the fees is very less and feasible.
Placement will b so good, most of the companies will be preferred university students only. Will equipped laboratories and trained students. Most o the students are research orientated and research thinking ability is more.Based on the UGC Rules and regulation university faculty will be recruited. University recruited starting as an assistant professor and superannuated with the professor. Most of the faculty will be good.
