First Things First: What is Google Bard?

Before we start experimenting with it, I'll answer the question: what is Google Bard and how it can be used?

Google Bard is a large language model, also known as the Google chatbot AI tool, trained on a massive amount of text data. It can communicate and generate human-like text in response to a wide range of prompts and questions.

Here's a little fun fact: t he name "Bard" is a reference to the bards of Celtic cultures who were professional story tellers, verse-makers, music composers, oral historians and genealogists. They were employed by a patron to praise them or their ancestors.

Do you think it's a fitting name? I think it is, since Bard is mainly working with language skills. 

It's important to consider that Bard is still under development and still learning how to do many things. But it's already been used by Google AI to develop new products and features, a new search algorithm, a new translation service, and a new code generation tool.

Here are some ways Google Bard can be used:

  • generating text
  • answering questions
  • translating languages
  • summarizing text
  • writing different kinds of creative content
  • helping you with your research

Imagine all the things you can do with AI for your business. AI tools like Bard can creatives explore new ideas and identify opportunities that they may not have otherwise considered. You can also save time and money on tasks like content creation, while also improving the quality of your content.

So, now that you know the answer to what is Google Bard, let's test it out with a little experiment.

Here are seven steps to work with Google Bard to develop a new business idea from the ground up:

1. Start by Identifying Your Interests

What are you passionate about? What are you good at? Imagine a business idea that combines your skills and passions. Let's experiment with Bard to make that happen.

For example, I went to my LinkedIn and gathered some of the skills listed in my work experience. Then I just wrote down a list of things I actually love to do.

2. Brainstorm Business Ideas With Bard

Now, let's get into the fun part. Go to Google Bard and ask it to come up with ten business ideas based on the passions and skills you listed. 

Embrace wild concepts. Out of the box thinking can foster the most creative and groundbreaking ideas.

Here's my prompt and the answer that I got:

Another suggestion is to ask Bard to generate a list of new products or services that could be developed based on your interests and skills.

Here's my prompt and my results:

You'll notice it's likely to get generic answers to some questions. But it's also true you can find key aspects that you might've been overlooking.

Let's go further into detail. I'm going to choose one of the ideas Bard gave me to start developing it more extensively.

I'll go with the "creativity workshop" idea. But I'm still not sure how to frame it to make it unique, plus I'm not sure how can I make money from it.

With all the ideas and references I got, I decided I wanted to create a business inspired in The School of Life but focused on creative health tools.

So far, I've decided I'd like my business to do the following:

  • offer artists with workshops, council, tools and networking alternatives
  • subscription based
  • start testing the idea in Mexico

Wow, there's something cooking right here. Let's keep going! 

3. Research Your Target Market

Moving on, think of questions you could ask Bard to better frame and define your business idea.

Here are some examples based on my own experiment: 

  • What are the latest trends in the creativity workshop industry?
  • What are the demographics of people who are interested in creativity workshops?
  • What are the needs of people who are interested in creativity workshops?
  • Can you develop a buyer persona for me?
  • What hashtags are people using to talk about creativity workshops in Mexico?
  • What are my customers' favorite workshops?

For example, I asked Bard to give me some creativity workshop business in Mexico to use as reference. Here are the answers I got:

02 Bard Research Your Target Market

With all the information above complemented with a bit of research you can do on your own, you'll have a more specific business idea. 

4. Develop a Business Plan

A successful business needs and action plan. That's where a coherent business plan comes in handy. But where to start? How to structure it? What must be included? Let's ask Bard. 

According to Bard, these are the key sections of a business plan:

  • brief overview of your business
  • company description
  • products and services
  • market analysis
  • competitive analysis
  • marketing plan
  • financial projections

I'll start drafting a brief overview and company description with Bard's help. I'll try to be as specific as possible in my request so I can get a basic business structure to start working with. Here's my prompt and the answer I got:

5. Create Content for Your Business

Once you've got your business idea and business plan ready to go, start getting content ideas for your website and social media channels. 

You probably know by now that Netflix uses machine learning to recommend movies and TV shows to its users. According to Netflix's TechBlog , their algorithm is responsible for around 75% of the content that users watch. So how can you use AI to help you curate content for your customers? 

Ask Bard to give you content ideas to post on Instagram. You can also ask Bard to create a weekly schedule with different types of content to start planning your social media grid. 

6. Get Leads and Sales Ideas With AI

Now you've got a developed business idea: how do you sell it?

Ask Bard can help generate ideas to find leads and sales. For example, here are some lead and sales ideas Bard gave me for my creative business experiment: 

  • partner with other businesses
  • run workshops at corporate events
  • host free events
  • run social media contests

It can go as detailed as creating landing pages, email marketing campaigns, and social media advertising campaigns.

7. Create a Pitch Deck to Find Investors

Once you have a winning business idea, it's time to get investors to back up your project. Ask Bard to help you out.

While AI has been in our business vernacular for the last five to 10 years, the topic has seen explosive interest recently, thanks to a series of advancements from established corporations and startups alike. Overnight, AI went from a subject that most businesses were leisurely exploring to an imperative that they need to get right and derive actual value from — no easy task with the technology advancing so quickly.

Despite the increased excitement, many companies lack a clear AI strategy . This uncertainty applies to well-established AI use cases , such as demand forecasting, personalized offerings, and anomaly detection, but it’s especially prevalent when adopting emerging generative AI capabilities and large language models (LLMs) .

Given today’s macroeconomic environment and growing competitive pressure, organizations are looking for ways to solve for business resilience . They can no longer afford to take a wait-and-see approach, which risks creating AI apathy, considering the rapid pace of new innovations. Consider the following three examples of different approaches to AI.

  • A US-based home goods retailer chose to leverage Google Cloud’s out-of-the-box Retail Search solution , saving hundreds of hours of development time and allowing them to deploy an AI solution in weeks — not months. As a result, development teams were free to shift their attention to other high-value initiatives. Adopting AI-enhanced search increased incremental search revenue by 10%, compared to rules-based optimization. 
  • Wendy’s chose to leverage Google Cloud’s pre-trained AI models on their custom data to accelerate deployment, saving years of model development and providing a faster entry into AI. For Wendy’s, accelerating model development is critical, as its franchises can respond to business issues and opportunities rather than waiting for IT to build a project from scratch. 
  • Etsy adopted Vertex AI and other Google Cloud services to build an end-to-end machine learning (ML) platform , which the marketplace uses to create personalized experiences with state-of-the art search, ads, and product recommendations. Not only do teams now have the ability to experiment freely with the ML framework of their choice, Etsy estimates the new platform has reduced the time it takes to go from ideation to a live ML experiment by 50%. 

2. Where are you on your AI journey? 

Most organizations are at different points of their journey — it’s hard not to be when AI is now embedded into everything from email and office platforms to supply chain and production software. In more strategic terms, though, there is considerable variability in adoption between more mature and nascent AI firms. Asking this question can help you identify the current state of your organization’s AI capabilities and identify where gaps may exist.

  • Lead: The extent to which your AI strategy is supported by leadership and to what degree is it reflected in team structures, budget decisions, and corporate vision.
  • Access: The extent to which your organization recognizes data management as key to enabling AI and how well your teams can share, discover, and reuse data and other ML assets.
  • Secure: The extent to which you protect your data and ML services from unauthorized access, including controls, governance, and other strategies that ensure responsible, regulatory, and privacy standards.
  • Scale: The extent to which you use cloud-native ML services that scale with more data, more models, and faster data processing without compromising quality or cost.
  • Automate: The extent to which you have automated your data and ML pipelines in production to reliably train, deploy, track, and monitor AI models at scale.
  • Learn: The quality and scale of your approach to upskilling, hiring, and partnering to ensure your organization has the necessary talent and skills to execute your AI strategy. 

Evaluating these six dimensions can give you a comprehensive overview of where your capabilities stand, what areas need improvement, and help you prioritize projects for more business impact. For instance, Google conducted an assessment with 20 top-level AI and data practitioners at a global HR software provider, helping to identify 12 growth opportunities across three workstreams. Armed with this assessment and associated goals, the organization’s vice president of data and AI was able to create and finalize an actionable strategy for the next 24 months.

3. What use cases should you prioritize for AI? 

Despite the growing urgency to adopt AI, selecting the right use cases is essential when building financial resilience with new technology. Consider the following questions about potential AI use cases: 

  • Do you need to leverage generative AI for 200,000 distinct marketing ads or can you use traditional AI methods to optimize your ad performance?
  • Is modeling the customer lifetime value something worthy of a large AI investment when it may not be a serious differentiator?
  • Before investing resources in developing an advanced demand forecasting model, do you have alignment from inventory and fulfillment teams on how it will fit into the overarching supply chain process? And do you have a strong enough data foundation in place to make demand forecasting trustworthy enough?

Ultimately, your investments may fall short of expectations if you fail to prioritize how your new technology investments can maximize business value over chasing the next big thing. 

So, how do you prioritize your AI use cases? 

Traditionally, you might compare potential value of a project with the time and effort it requires (e.g., Value vs. Effort method). Under this approach, you would typically prioritize use cases that are low effort and high value first. With AI, we recommend taking a slightly different take on this familiar framework, comparing feasibility against actionability. In other words, do your data and AI have everything needed to build a usable model? And if so, how likely is it for your business and operations teams to derive value from it?

Within this updated framework, it becomes easier to rank the use cases that best suit your current capabilities while allowing you to gain real business value. You can add other dimensions to this framework to better understand the impact of use cases, including the potential value of production models (i.e., AI investment for ROI) and the cost of implementing a new model (i.e., Cost per Model in Deployment). 

Enterprises are deploying AI in a number of unique ways at the moment, but how you choose to incorporate your existing technology stack and data can be the biggest differentiator in how successful you are at achieving your goals.

4. How can you get there? 

Having a clear plan in mind for how to execute your strategy is the key to enhancing your organization’s horizontal capabilities and gaining real business benefits. 

The risk of building models that never make it to production is real. Interviews with customers show it can take anywhere from seven days to 18 months to bring a model from ideation to production. Implementing AI with a high-risk, high-reward mentality can cause you to overlook more valuable quick wins that can build momentum and alignment for future AI investments.

5. When can you expect to see results? 

Creating accountability is a hallmark of successful AI adoption, and this question will help you connect your efforts with clearly defined performance indicators and business impacts. You need to track and translate both technical and operational improvements in tangible metrics that business stakeholders can align with and understand.

The matrix below can help you understand if you are making the right investments and the velocity of your AI model development. For example, organizations with higher rates of AI investments and model actualization are typically considered as transformation leaders. By comparison, organizations with lower rates of AI investments and low model actualization could be falling behind. 

The right KPIs can help identify bottlenecks and ensure your AI investments are continuously optimized. In addition, setting up monitoring to increase visibility into your spending on cloud and AI services across teams can also be important for keeping your costs in check. In particular, allocating usage back to respective teams can help you control your costs while ensuring they are distributed fairly and where they are needed.

Florida residents who are getting set to plan a trip for the perfect summer destination may be able to get a bargain price with the help of AI and Google.

The search engine powerhouse is offering AI-driven trip planning with the destination of your choice and the best price to boot.

“We have what we call a price alert on Google Flights,” Google technology expert Luma Hamade said. “I actually got a massive discount for my trip to Europe using the price alert.”

The trip technology is free, creating itineraries for destinations from Orlando to Italy, which just happens to be a hotspot for Florida travelers this year.

Hamade told News 6 that travelers who want to score a bargain price should go to Google Flights “a few weeks before you intend to book” and set the price alert filter on so you know what day that flight will be the cheapest.

“When it comes to organization, you should get a confirmation email once you book right to your Gmail,” Hamade told News 6. “You can actually have Gemini, which is our AI chatbot, pull that confirmation email and create an entire itinerary based on where you are going.”

Hamade says the AI magic happens on your phone or laptop “in real-time.” In fact, she said she saved $500 on her flight, thanks to the price alert.

The “Google Maps community” provides real-time experiences so the AI system can focus on the best local spots for your vacation destination.

“When you’re shopping for what you want to wear on that trip, we have what we call a personalized style recommender,” she said. “Hit your Google search page, scroll down and you can choose your wardrobe.”

The deal is now at the heart of a US antitrust lawsuit filed against Google in 2020, but it's shaped how Americans experienced the internet and has been extremely lucrative for Apple: Google paid $20 billion in 2022 to maintain the deal.

On Monday, when CEO Tim Cook kicks off Apple's Worldwide Developer Conference , he's expected to unveil a new vision of artificial intelligence by announcing a partnership with OpenAI.

Bloomberg reported Wednesday that Apple is all but set to announce that the ChatGPT maker's technology will be integrated into the iPhone operating system.

For Apple, the partnership is a bold attempt to bring generative-AI features to its devices after months of questions from investors, developers, and others about its plans to get in on Silicon Valley's most-talked-about technology.

Though Apple typically keeps its plans secret, there's been a growing sense that the company was falling behind on AI . Rivals like Google and Meta have charged ahead with their own AI models, while Microsoft partnered with OpenAI as early as 2019.

But by bringing an incumbent AI player like OpenAI into its mix, Apple hopes it can shape a new internet experience for iPhone users in the AI era.

In a research note, Wedbush analysts wrote that this year's WWDC could be "the most important event for Apple in over a decade as the pressure to bring a generative AI stack of technology for developers and consumers" grows.

For OpenAI, the deal would give it access to one of the most powerful distribution systems in the world, as there are more than a billion active iPhone users.

Time will tell if the deal is as fruitful as Apple's search-engine agreement with Google. Though OpenAI has emerged as the face of the generative-AI boom thanks to the early-mover advantage it gained from ChatGPT's release in November 2022, it's also been mired in controversy.

Redmond, Wash., June 3/Tokyo, June 4, 2024 – Hitachi Ltd. (TSE:6501) and Microsoft Corp. announced a projected multibillion-dollar collaboration over the next three years that will accelerate social innovation with generative AI. Through this strategic alliance, Hitachi will propel growth of the Lumada business, with a planned revenue of 2.65 trillion yen (18.9 billion USD) *1 in FY2024, and will promote operational efficiency and productivity improvements for Hitachi Group’s 270,000 employees.

“Hitachi has been driving transformation by applying AI across the Hitachi Group to improve productivity and will invest 300 billion yen(2.1 billion USD) *1 in GenAI to capture new growth opportunities in FY2024. Hitachi and Microsoft have already been working on a variety of co-creation projects including the development of next-generation digital solutions for the manufacturing and logistics fields *2 and the development of a field-extended metaverse that runs on Microsoft Teams,” said Keiji Kojima, president and CEO of Hitachi. “Under this new agreement, we are excited to further accelerate social innovation by expanding our efforts to social infrastructure areas such as energy and mobility, and by applying generative AI, to improve the productivity of frontline workers, which will become even more important in the future. By combining our capabilities, we can help solve the issues faced by our customers and society, and contribute to a more sustainable future.”

Hitachi Rail is leveraging GenAI for predictive maintenance, enhancing equipment monitoring and refining forecast accuracy. This proactive approach prevents breakdowns, increases service quality, reduces operating expenses and augments safety. For example, a cloud-based platform on Microsoft Azure was used to streamline data visualization and analysis, empowered by AI to furnish data-driven insights to digitally monitor rail infrastructure. These insights were translated into actionable steps for Network Rail , enhancing decision-making for predictive maintenance of overhead lines.

Develop innovative digital solutions

Hitachi is enhancing its Lumada solutions by incorporating the capability of generative AI. As part of the initiative, Hitachi has already started to use Microsoft’s Generative AI for JP1 Cloud Services, a SaaS version of JP1, its integrated operations management software with approximately 20,000 customers. This will accelerate response times to address failures, and enable improved operational efficiencies for IT departments, financial and public institutions. In an internal verification test conducted earlier, Hitachi confirmed that the time required for the operator to make an initial response to an alert was reduced to approximately two-thirds by using generated AI to respond to the alert and displaying the source of the citation, such as a manual, that provided the basis for the response.

In addition to this, Hitachi and Microsoft will also support the energy transition with improved access to and strengthening of digital solutions for asset performance management, energy trading, and risk management to reduce downtime and increase profitability. Increased computing power and cloud infrastructure are both critical to scaling these applications. Hitachi Energy’s Enterprise Software Solutions technology and its partnership with Microsoft are key to optimizing the energy network, from generation, through transmission and distribution, and ultimately in delivering reliable and sustainable energy to customers.

Joint projects to promote sustainable growth

Multiple Hitachi Group Companies including GlobalLogic, Hitachi Digital Services and Hitachi Solutions, deliver a wide range of digital engineering, IT and managed services, and application services for the cloud. Additional development efforts through this partnership will focus on enhancing this broad range of services with the aim of sustainable innovation with Microsoft.

As the impact of CO2 emissions from AI on the global environment increases, Hitachi and Microsoft will work toward zero carbon, starting with a data center project in Europe, to reduce environmental impact.

Strengthen digital skilling and talent development

Hitachi will train more than 50,000 GenAI Professionals. As part of the partnership, Hitachi will incorporate training to acquire advanced software development skills using GitHub Copilot and Azure OpenAI Service into the program to develop GenAI Professionals, talents who support customers’ transformation using AI.
