Repeat Step #3 for the remaining rectangles containing the numbers 4, 3, 2, and 1. To ensure you don’t lose track of which item to animate, go to “Selection Pane” and name the shape groups into identifiable terms.

Step 5: Animation Pane and Settings

How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint - Disappearing Countdown Timer method step 5

Go to Animation Pane and adjust the setting. Set the number 5 group to “Start on Click” and set the duration and delay to 1 second.

Step 6: Repeat

Repeat Step #5 for all other rectangles, progressing from 4 to 1. Configure the timing to: Start: After Previous, Duration: Auto, and Delay: 01:00.

Step 7: Add Sound (Optional)

How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint - Disappearing Countdown Timer method step 7

You can also choose to add sound to the animation to better capture your audience’s attention.

There you have it – a disappearing countdown timer!

Method #3: Clock Countdown Timer

The countdown clock timer method also leverages PowerPoint animations, specifically employing a distinct animation known as “Spin.”

Step 1: Create the Clock Base

How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint - Clock Countdown Timer method step 1

First, you need to create a clock base by adding a circle, as well as an arrow to represent the clock hand. Group the clock base elements.

Step 2: Add Numbers/Time

How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint - Clock Countdown Timer method step 2

Add numbers to the outer rim of the clock. Depending on your desired clock functionality, you can include numbers at intervals of 1, 5, 15, or 60. In our scenario, we intend for the clock to operate as a 1-minute countdown timer, thus we integrated numbers as seconds at 15-second intervals.

How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint - Clock Countdown Timer method step 3

Next, add animations to the clock. On the Animations tab, go to Animations and select Spin.

Step 4: Customise the Animation Settings

How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint - Clock Countdown Timer method step 4

Configure the effect options to: 360 degree full spin clockwise, and the timing options to: start: on click, duration: 60 seconds (or your desired countdown period).

That’s it. You can test it out by going to slide show mode!

Method #4: Bar Countdown Timer

The final method without using any add-ins is a bar countdown timer, which works very similar to the disappearing timer. We would be using the PowerPoint animation “fly out” in this case.

Step 1: Create 2 Rectangles

How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint - Clock Bar Countdown Timer method step 1

Create two rectangles that span the width of the PowerPoint slide.

Step 2: Stack the Rectangles

How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint - Clock Bar Countdown Timer method step 2

Stack the 2 rectangles on top of one another. The bottom rectangle will function as the base and the top rectangle will be the animating bar. Make sure to use distinct colours for both rectangles as well so they can be told apart from one another.

How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint - Clock Bar Countdown Timer method step 3

Select the top rectangle and add animations to it. On the Animations tab, go to Exit Animations and select Fly Out.

How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint - Clock Bar Countdown Timer method step 4

Configure the effect options to: properties: to left, and the timing options to: start: on click, duration: 60 seconds (or your desired countdown period).

Congratulations! You have successfully mastered the 4 best ways to add a Timer to your PowerPoint! These PowerPoint timer techniques will undoubtedly enhance your presentations, making them more engaging, organized, and seamlessly timed for a truly impressive impact.

1 minute timer for presentation

Create an on-screen timer

You can add an animated on-screen timer or progress bar to make your presentation more interesting. For example, you might want to include a timed quiz at the end of a training with a countdown display. You can use the animation features in PowerPoint to create many different kinds of timers.

If you’re looking for a timer to track how long you’ve been speaking to stay within your allotted time limits, see Start the presentation and see your notes in Presenter view .

Tip:  You can also find other types of timers, such as stopwatch timers, at the Office Store or use free slide templates to count down  one minute , five minutes , and ten minutes for your audience.

Create a countdown timer

This timer uses a simple but dramatic animation sequence. It shows a countdown in one-second intervals from 5 to 1.

Begin by creating five text boxes with numbers 5 through 1. We will animate these to disappear one at a time, in one-second intervals.

Countdown boxes.

Tip:  Create the boxes in order from highest to lowest so it’s easier to animate them in order.

To create text boxes, on the Insert tab, in Text group, click Text box , and draw the text box on your slide. Then add the number. You can copy and paste to duplicate and then edit the new boxes.

Click inside the text rectangle with the number.

On the Animations tab, in the Advanced Animation group, click Add Animation , and go down to Exit . Here, you can select the animation you want, for example Disappear .

On the ANIMATIONS tab, in the Advanced Animation group, click Add Animation. You have lots of animation options.

Select the rest of the rectangles 4, 3, 2, 1 in order, and apply the same exit animation, Disappear , to each, one at a time.

Click Animations > Animation Pane to show the Animation Pane . The numbering of the rectangles can be a little confusing because PowerPoint is accounting for other objects on the slide. Look at the number to the right, which shows the text in the rectangle.

Clickn ANIMATIONS, and then Animation Pane to show the Animation Pane. The number to the right of the colon reflects the number in the rectangle.

You want only the first rectangle with the number 5 to start on a click, and you want it to stay on screen for one second before it disappears. You want the other boxes to then each wait one second before disappearing automatically, one by one.

Select Rectangle 5 , and in the Animations > Timing group, leave the settings Start: On Click and Duration: .01 , but set Delay to 01.00 , one second.

In the Timing group, set Start to On Click.

Now, in the Animation Pane , select the rest of the rectangles one at a time, from 4 to 1. Again, in the Timing group, set the timing details to: Start: After Previous , Duration: Auto , and Delay: 01:00 .

In the Timing group, you can set the timing details.

When you’re done, try it out by going to Slideshow Mode and playing From Current Slide . Click to begin the countdown!

You can preview your animation effects any time. On the Animations tab, in the Preview group, click Preview .

After the countdown, you might want to add an animation, such as a text box that reads Finished! To do this, insert the text box, select it, go to Animations > Advanced Animation > Entrance > Appear . Then, in the Timing group, set Start to After Previous , set Duration to Auto , and set Delay to 00.00 . Notice that this text box also appears in the Animation Pane .

Note:  You can just as easily animate shapes to appear or disappear using the different entrance and exit animations in PowerPoint. You can use any interval, but it’s a good idea to set the same delay for each object in the sequence.

After the countdown, you can add an animation to read “Finished!"

How to create a progress bar timer

Another effective way to add a countdown timer is to emulate the appearance of a progress bar.

On the Insert tab, in the Illustrations group, click Shapes , and select a rectangle.

You can select a shape, such as a rectangle, in the Shapes section of the Illustrations group.

On the slide, click where you want the progress bar, and draw a rectangle with its edge against the left border of the slide.

The progress bar.

You can color the bar as you like. Right-click the bar and select Format Shape > Shape Options > Fill > Solid fill .

Progress bar with blue fill.

On the Animations tab, in the Animation group, select Fly In .

Click Effect  Options and  select From Left .

In the Timing group, set the Duration to the number of seconds you want the progress bar to run, for example, 30 seconds. For Start , select On Click .

Here’s what your settings should look like:

Settings for a specific effect of the progress bar.

When you’re done, try it out by going to Slideshow Mode and playing From Current Slide . Click to begin the timer. The progress bar should appear to grow from the left side of the screen for 30 seconds and then stop.

3 Easy Tips to Keep Your Presentation Brief

Let's learn how to add timer in PPT slides for powerful time tracking.

There are many different reasons that you use a PowerPoint timer. So, learning how to add a countdown timer to PowerPoint can be helpful. Here are a few examples:

  • If you must give a presentation in a short amount of time, you can add a timer to PowerPoint slides to keep you on track.
  • If you include a Q&A section in your presentation, you might want to add a timer so that the audience knows that they have a limited time to ask or answer questions.
  • A timer can also track the time left in a break for a longer presentation.

In this article, I’ll show you three different methods of inserting a timer in PowerPoint. You'll also explore some premium templates from Envato Elements and learn why templates are beneficial . Finally, we’ll look over some common PowerPoint questions and answers.

Timers can have many purposes in your presentation. But mainly, you use them to keep track of time passing or let the audience know the time.

To demonstrate how to insert a timer in PowerPoint, I’ll use the Multima Multipurpose Template from Envato Elements.

Multima template example

Also, for this tutorial, I’ll be focused on slide four. Here's what slide four looks like without edits made to the slide. It's nearly ready to insert PowerPoint timer graphics.

Add timer to PowerPoint

Three methods can be used to add a timer to PowerPoint or insert a countdown clock in PowerPoint. Let's look at each of them in turn.

Method #1: Create a Bar Timer

The bar method is effective in showing the passage of time. With it, you can create a moving bar that moves at your own chosen speed. Timers for PPT slides are flexible when you use the bar method.

It’s a quick, easy way to mark time passing as you share a slide. Here are the steps for adding a bar timer to any presentation slide:

1. Create a Timer Base

To add a bar timer to PowerPoint , click on the Insert tab. Next, click on the Shapes button.

Insert timer into PowerPoint

When you click this button, the shape menu drops down. Choose the rectangle shape. Next, draw the rectangle for your timer for PPT slides.

If you'd like, right-click on the rectangle and select Fill to change the color of the rectangle.

PowerPoint slides timer

To add text to the rectangle, click Insert and then click Text Box .

2. Add Movement to Your Timer

Click on your rectangle and click on the Animations tab. If you've added text, hold down the Control key and click on the text box. This selects both shape and text and ensures that they will animate together.

Timer insert for PowerPoint

Next, click on the More drop-down arrow on the Animations tab. You’ll see the full gallery of animation options drop down. From it, look at the Exit group. There, choose Fly Out.

Now, let’s adjust how the bar moves. This will make it look more like a timer, exiting off to one side of your slide. It will count down to the edge and disappear when the time is up.

PowerPoint timer slides

With your rectangle selected, click on the Effect Options button on the Animations tab. On the drop-down, click To Left. This means that the animation effect will move to the left. Choosing this option gives your shape a timer effect.

3. Create a Custom Duration

With your rectangle selected, you can change the duration of the animation. This controls the exact speed of your countdown timer.

Countdown timer on PPT

On the Animations tab, find the Timing section on the right side. In the Duration section, you can adjust the timing using the up and down arrows. Or you can type in a custom value.

Just like that, you’ve built a custom timer in PowerPoint using the bar technique!

Method #2: Create a Clock

The clock method is like the bar method. This is great for people who want their timer to look more like a clock.

Here are the steps to add a clock timer to your slide.

1. Pick Your Clock Base

First, you need to choose a clock base. You can use a shape that came with the template or create your own. Remember, it needs to be a shape and not an image.

This shape will be the inner part of the clock that we'll use as the clock. Next, I'll show you how to make the outside of the clock.

Countdown clock for PowerPoint

To begin, I moved some elements from the slide to make room for the clock. Now, choose which shape you want your clock to be. I chose the circle.

Click on the Insert tab. In the toolbar, click on the Shapes button. When you click on this button, a shape menu drops down. Draw the circle where you want your clock to be.

Next, keep drawing shapes around the middle shape to create a clock. I chose more circles.

Insert a countdown clock in a PowerPoint

After you've drawn the shapes, you’ll need to add numbers to show time. Double-click inside the shape and type the number you want.

To add a text box, click the Insert tab. Next, click on the Text Box button in the toolbar button. Draw the text box in the outside shapes. Again, type the number that you want.

2. Pick Your Clock’s Color

Customize your clock by choosing the color. Begin by clicking on the shape.

Timer for PPT Slides

Next, click on the Shape Format tab. Then, click on the Shape Fill drop-down button, found in the Shape Styles group. You’ll see a color chooser menu appear. Click on any of the new shades to apply it to your clock shape.

3. Add Movement to Your Clock

Now you need to add movement to your clock to show time passing. Begin by clicking on the middle circle.

Insert PowerPoint timer

Next, click on the Animations tab. In the Animation group, click the drop-down arrow. From the gallery, find the Wheel option and click on it to select it. This animates your circle like a ticking clock in PPT.

4. Customize Your Clock’s Duration

Adding a custom clock duration can make your timer more accurate. Start by selecting the middle circle.

Add timer in PPT

Next, click on the Animations tab. In the Timing section, find the Duration field. Click on it, and you can add a custom duration using the arrows.

Plus, you can type in a custom time value using your keyboard. This controls the speed of the Wheel animation that you just added.

Method #3: Use an Add-In

Here is how to use an add-in to add a PowerPoint timer to your slide:

1. Find the Add-In

Add-ins are PowerPoint tools that you can add to your PowerPoint toolbar. There are add-ins for lots of different tools, including timers. Here are the steps explaining how to add an add-in timer to your slide:

Timer on PowerPoint

To access the add-in menu, click on the Insert tab. Next, click on the Get Add-ins button in the toolbar.

This causes the add-ins store to pop up in a window. These give you features to insert PowerPoint timers. Choose the timer add-in that you want to add to PowerPoint.

2. Choose the Add-in

The add-in chosen to countdown on PowerPoint is EasyTimer.

Before adding a timer to PowerPoint, it’s best to read the reviews. The one titled EasyTimer has the best review, so we will add that one. To add it to PowerPoint, click on the red Add button. There are many timers for PPT slides in the PowerPoint add-in store, such as:

Choose the PowerPoint timer that suits your needs. Once you click Add, a box with the license terms and privacy policy will appear. After you’ve read it, click Continue .

3. Customize the Timer

Make your customizations to your timer on PPT slides.

After you click Continue , your PowerPoint timer will appear on a slide. Use the drop-down menus to customize the timer to suit your needs.

Here are three tips to keep your presentations brief:

1. Focus on Key Points

Focus on important information to make your presentation shorter.

If you want to do more than use a PowerPoint countdown timer to keep your presentations brief, you should ensure that you only focus on key points or essential information. This means that you should cut out any fluff or unnecessary information. It helps to figure out what your presentation is about and expand on that idea.

2. Don’t Rush

If you’ve put a timer in PPT slides or want to make a short presentation, don’t talk fast to make your presentation shorter. You need to do your research and ensure that you are presenting facts and only telling the main story of your presentation.

3. Use Pictures

Images can help you get your message to the audience.

Pictures can give the audience a lot of information, whether it’s a chart that shows data or an emotional picture to prove a point. If you’re using a timer on PowerPoint and want to create a brief presentation, use images to help illustrate your points. Here are some articles that will help you learn how to keep your presentation brief:

Countdowns in PowerPoint presentations can help to make your presentation more dynamic. In this blog post you will find instructions on how to quickly and easily add your own digital timer to PowerPoint. However, if you prefer predefined designs, we have prepared different templates for you to download.

4 possible use-cases for countdown timers

Breaks are essential in presentations to allow the audience to process the information they got. When the audience is tuning out, it is often not due to the presenter, but to an overload of information. In this case, a pause is an effective way to digest the information and rebuild the attendees' attention. In order not to forget about breaks, it is advisable to include slides with a break countdown in your presentation. The countdown ensures that all your listeners will return from the break on time.

break

2. Exercises

When giving presentations, you should involve your audience in your talk. An interactive presentation with exercises motivates your participants and makes them to active listeners. To avoid exceeding your time schedule, you can use a timer in your presentation. This way, your audience also keeps track of how much time is left for the exercise.

3. Brainstorm sessions

If ideas should be collected during a presentation, it is suitable to brainstorm with your audience. Especially here it's important to set the time limit for brainstorming beforehand. While your participants are brainstorming ideas, you can use a PowerPoint countdown to show the remaining time.

brainstorm session

4. Live polls

To learn more about your audience, you can start a presentation with a poll, for example. With SlideLizard it is possible to conduct polls and surveys during presentations. Even while the poll is running, you can see a live evaluation of the results in the speaker view. Meanwhile your audience is able to see a countdown to know how long the poll is already running. You can find more about the survey function of SlideLizard here .

Create your own countdown timer

Creating countdowns in PowerPoint works quite easily. With this simple bar timer, you can show your audience exactly how much time is left of the break. Follow these 4 steps to add a countdown to PowerPoint presentations.

1. Creating a shape

To create a timer, we first need a shape. Click on that slide where you want to insert your countdown and choose > Shape > Rectangle in the Insert tab.

insert shape

2. Selecting an animation

To bring movement into the presentation now, click on the shape and switch to the "Animations" tab. For a countdown, we need the "Flying out" output effect.

add animation

To make the bar disappear like a timer, click on "Effect options" and select "To Left". This way you can determine in which direction your bar timer decreases.

define direction

3. Customize the duration

On the far right of the Animation tab, you can specify the desired duration of the countdown. It's specified in seconds and the highest value is 59.00 seconds.

define duration

However, if you want a timer that lasts longer than a minute, there is another option. In the "Advanced Animation" tab, select Animation Area and double-click on the timeline.

click animation pane

An additional window opens in which the duration of the countdown can be increased to 10:00 minutes, for example.

How i made the mac menu bar useful with these 5 free apps, make your linux terminal look like a retro computer with this app, quick links, create a custom countdown timer, get a ready-made timer using an add-in.

There's no built-in timer in PowerPoint, but you can create your own using a mix of objects and animations. There's also a neat add-in you can use if you need a quick solution. Let's take a look.

You can create a custom countdown timer in PowerPoint by adding to on-screen shapes an exit animation with a set time to complete the animation. You can use one shape if you want, but if you use multiple shapes for the timer, you'll need to set each animation to begin in order once the last animation is finished. Note that the longest duration you can set for a single animation is 59 seconds.

First, open the PowerPoint presentation you'd like to add the timer to, and then insert the shapes of your choice (Insert > Shape). You can insert as many or as few shapes as necessary. In this example, we'll insert five rectangles with rounded edges.

Rectangles with rounded edges.

Once you've got the shapes set, add a number to them by double-clicking the shape and typing the number. The numbers can represent minutes or seconds. If you want the duration of the timer to be 5 minutes, then you can add 5, 4, 3, 2, and 1 in the boxes and set each animation duration to 59 seconds.

Rectangles with numbers in them.

Next, add an exit animation to each shape. You'll need to add the animation in the order you want each animation to disappear. To add an animation, click the shape to select it, go to the "Navigations" tab, and then choose an exit animation. Exit animations are red.

A panel with exit animations.

After you select the animation, set the duration of the animation in the Timing group. As mentioned earlier, the max duration you can set is 59 seconds.

The timing options in PowerPoint.

After you set the first animation, select the next shape, give it an animation, and then set the duration. However, for this one, you'll also need to adjust when the animation starts. For a seamless countdown, you'll want to select "After Previous." This means the animation will start when the previous animation is finished.

Select After Previous.

Continue this until all of the shapes have been assigned an exit animation and duration.

To insert a countdown timer using an add-in , open the PowerPoint presentation , navigate to the "Insert" tab, and then click "Get Add-ins" ("Store" on Mac).

Click Get Add-ins.

The Office Add-ins window will appear. There are multiple countdown timer add-ins you can choose from, but we'll be using "Breaktime" in this example. Search for "Breaktime" and then click the red "Add" button to the right.

Click Add.

When you add the add-in, the timer will appear on the current slide of your presentation.  If you want to add the timer to a different slide, navigate to the slide and then click Insert > My Add-ins > Breaktime.

You can set the timer in minutes and seconds, start and stop the timer, and reset it back to the input time. You can even give your timer a background by choosing one from the "Type" option.

Timer settings.

That's all there is to it. Timers serve an important purpose, but depending on what you're hoping to accomplish, you may also want to consider adding a progress bar or even a clock to your presentation.

How to Make a Timer in Powerpoint: A Step-by-Step Guide

Adding a timer to your PowerPoint presentation can be a game-changer. It helps you manage your time effectively and ensures your presentation runs smoothly. Plus, it’s pretty straightforward to do. Let me walk you through it.

After completing the timer setup in PowerPoint, you’ll have a visual countdown that lets both you and your audience know how much time is left for a particular section or the entire presentation. This is especially useful during timed presentations, such as conferences or workshops.

Introduction

Ever found yourself rambling on during a presentation, only to realize you’ve run out of time for the rest of your content? Or perhaps you’ve sat through a presentation that seemed to drag on forever? Timing is everything, and that’s where a PowerPoint timer swoops in to save the day.

Creating a timer in PowerPoint is a nifty trick that keeps your presentation on track, engages your audience, and adds a professional touch. It’s perfect for pitch presentations, classroom settings, timed exams, or any situation where you need to pace your information flow. If you’ve ever wondered how to make your presentations more dynamic and interactive, mastering this simple tool could be your answer. So, let’s dive in and learn how to keep your audience on their toes with a perfectly timed PowerPoint presentation.

Step by Step Tutorial on How to Make a Timer in PowerPoint

Before we get into the steps, let’s clarify what we’re aiming for here. By following the tutorial, we’ll create a countdown timer that’ll tick away as your slides progress, keeping you aware of the time without constantly checking your watch.

Step 1: Open the PowerPoint Slide

Start by opening the slide where you want the timer to appear.

Adding a timer to a specific slide means it will only be visible when that slide is active. This is perfect for sections of your presentation where time management is crucial, like a Q&A or a timed break.

Step 2: Insert a Text Box

Go to the Insert tab and click Text Box, then click on the slide where you want to place your timer.

By inserting a text box, you create a designated area for your timer. This can be placed anywhere on your slide, but it’s typically best to keep it in a corner where it’s visible but not distracting.

Step 3: Enter the Time

Type the time you want to count down from in the text box in the format of minutes:seconds, such as 05:00 for five minutes.

Remember, the time you enter here will be the starting point of your countdown. Make sure it’s set for the right amount of time you need for the section of your presentation.

Step 4: Add the Animation

Go to the Animations tab, click Add Animation, and choose Wipe. Then, set the Effect Options to From Left and the Duration to the same amount of time you typed into the text box.

The Wipe animation gives the illusion of time passing by as it gradually reveals the countdown. It’s a simple yet effective way to visualize the timer.

Step 5: Trigger the Animation

Under the Timing section, set the Start option to After Previous and check the box for Repeat until End of Slide.

Setting the animation to start ‘After Previous’ ensures that the timer begins automatically after any previous animations or transitions. The ‘Repeat until End of Slide’ option will keep the timer running until you move to the next slide.

BenefitExplanation
Keeps Presentation On TrackA timer helps ensure that each part of your presentation gets the attention it deserves without going overboard on one aspect.
Engages AudienceAn on-screen timer can add a sense of urgency, making the audience more attentive.
Professional TouchUsing a timer shows your audience that you value their time and are well-prepared.
DrawbackExplanation
Possible DistractionIf not placed correctly, a timer could distract your audience from the content of your slides.
Technical GlitchesLike any technological feature, there’s a risk of the timer not working due to software issues.
Added PressureFor some presenters, the visible countdown may add extra pressure and potentially disrupt the flow of their delivery.

Additional Information

Now, you may be wondering, “Is there a way to customize the timer to match my presentation style?” Absolutely! PowerPoint allows you to change the font, color, and size of the text in your timer to ensure it integrates seamlessly with your design. You can also experiment with different animations to find what works best for you.

Remember to practice with your timer before the actual presentation. This helps you get a feel for the pace and timing, ensuring there are no surprises on the big day. Plus, it’s always good to have a backup plan in case of technical difficulties – maybe have a watch or a clock handy just in case.

  • Open the PowerPoint Slide
  • Insert a Text Box
  • Enter the Time

Will the timer work in older versions of PowerPoint?

How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint

Cover for How to Add a Timer to PowerPoint Guide

A countdown timer can be used to announce a break, start a presentation, or as a lead-up to a major announcement. While PowerPoint does not come with a default timer, there are various other methods by which you can insert a timer for PowerPoint. In a previous post, we showed you how to add a timer to Google Slides . In this tutorial, we will show you the different methods that can be used to add a timer to PowerPoint.

What are the Common Uses of the Timer in PowerPoint?

When people start using presentation apps like PowerPoint, their questions might be basic, such as how to start a presentation or use a process map template to create a business presentation. As presenters mature, they become interested in more complex questions such as, “Can I add a clock to my PowerPoint presentation or put a timer on a PowerPoint slide? Before we show you how to add a clock or timer in PowerPoint, let’s first explore the benefits of one! A presentation timer can be used for a number of reasons during a PowerPoint presentation. Below is a list of some common uses of timers on PPT slides.

Countdowns to a Major Development

It goes without saying that the most common use of a timer in a PowerPoint presentation is to show a countdown. This might include the start of a presentation, before revealing a product or important information, or the countdown to the start of an event.

Breaking Down Sessions

A countdown timer can be helpful for breaking down different sessions during a PowerPoint presentation, separating one session from another with a short countdown.

Break Countdowns

If you want your audience to take a short break and be back on time, an on-screen countdown timer can be a great way to help everyone keep track of time.

To Track Time for Activities

Some activities during interactive presentations might require time allocation. A timer on the screen can help ensure each activity has a specified time. Such PPT timers can also display a countdown for participants during a debate or show each presenter how much time they have left before their session ends.

To Inform the Audience

Countdown timers can also be used to inform the audience about the time remaining for an activity, session, or event. This can help keep the audience informed and enable better time management.

How to Insert Timer on PowerPoint Slides

Method 1: create a timer in powerpoint.

You can create your own timer in PowerPoint using PowerPoint Shapes and Animations. You can use any shape or design you prefer. In the below example, we will create a countdown timer using oval shapes.

Step 1: Add Shapes to PowerPoint Slide

To get started, insert an oval shape in PowerPoint via Insert -> Shapes . You can also choose to use other types of shapes since this method does not require a specific shape to create a countdown timer.

Inserting a Shape to create a timer in PowerPoint

Step 2: Design a Timer According to Your Required Time Duration

You can design a timer by adding shapes and text to it. It can include 10 shapes counting from 10 to 1 or whatever time you might prefer, such as one shape for each minute, leading up to the point when the time runs out. A shape at the center announcing that the time’s up can also be included.

How to create a timer in PowerPoint with shapes

Step 3: Set the Color and Label Timer Shapes

One or more of the shapes you use for the timer can also be recolored to differentiate them and to separate the timer from the final announcement. You can also change the outline of the shape, stylize the text, and make other adjustments to create a visually appealing design. If you find yourself short of ideas for making your slide look good, you can use PowerPoint Designer to get inspiration for the design of your timer.

Customizing shape color in PowerPoint

Step 4: Animate Timer Shapes

Select the shapes and use an animation to animate them (e.g., Appear ). From the Animations tab via the Timing menu, you can decide whether the shapes are triggered by clicking or automatically, one after the other.

How to animate shapes in PowerPoint for a timer

Step 5: Set Timer To Play Out in a Sequence

In this example, we triggered the shapes from 10 to 1 to play out one after another automatically while setting a slight delay for each shape.

Start behavior for animation in PowerPoint

Step 6: Add a Specific Time in the Timer to PowerPoint

By setting the time for 1 second allocated to each shape, we triggered the timer to play out from 10 to 1, followed by an eleventh shape labeled ‘Time’s Up’. If you’re wondering how to add a specific time in the timer to PowerPoint, the timing menu can be used for this very purpose. However, the time you wish to reveal will also depend upon the way you design your timer in PowerPoint, such as a 10-second timer, 10-minute timer, or some other time duration that might suit you.  If you are looking for information about setting time when switching slides, see our tutorial about how to set time duration to switch slides in PowerPoint .

Setting duration and display for the timer animation

Example of an Animated Timer in PowerPoint

The below GIF animation shows a countdown sequence designed using shapes and animations in PowerPoint, with a one-second time allocated to each shape in the design. Using this method, you can create a countdown timer by revealing shapes or other types of elements within a PowerPoint slide that can be labeled with numbers to represent time. This way, you can create a countdown timer for any time duration. Furthermore, you can also use colorful slide elements to present different points in time by coloring or using colorful slide elements representing seconds, minutes, hours, etc.

Method 2: PowerPoint Timer Add-ins

Another easy method to add a timer in PowerPoint is to use timer add-ins. There are a range of third-party add-ins that can help you supercharge your PowerPoint presentations with stylish countdown timers. PowerPoint add-ins can enable you to avoid spending time making countdown timers from scratch and add a layer of reliability since most add-ins are designed to work seamlessly without the need for an Internet connection. These timers use Macros or PowerPoint Animations to embed timers in PowerPoint presentations. Providing the end user with basic configuration options to start using a custom PowerPoint timer.

Accessing to the Add-ins section in PowerPoint

Step 1: Go to the Office Store

To get started, go to File -> Get Add-ins to access the Office Store in PowerPoint. If you are new to the Office Store, it is home to add-ins for Office applications, including PowerPoint.

How to install the EasyTimer add in for PowerPoint

Step 2: Select and Add a Timer Add-in to PowerPoint

While there are several add-ins for adding timers to PPT slides, we will use the EasyTimer add-in to demonstrate the process of adding a timer in PowerPoint.

Basic settings in EasyTimer Add-in

Step 3: Select a Timer Type

The EasyTimer add-in provides three different types of timers, including an analog clock, a bar, and a digital clock.

Changing timer type in EasyTimer Add-in

You can select a timer type that suits your needs and add design elements or a relevant PowerPoint theme to add color to the timer. The timer add-in mainly has a black-and-white layout, with the green bar timer being an exception.

Step 4: Select Duration and Sound Effect

Once you have selected the type of timer you wish to use, select the time duration, optional sound effects, and click Start when you need to start the timer. You can also pause, stop, or reset the timer anytime using the buttons on the timer slide. Once the timer has started, you can switch to SlideShow mode and the timer will continue to operate. There are also options to Snooze the timer right from within Slide Show mode in PowerPoint.

Method 3: Insert a Video as a Timer

You can also insert online timer videos into a PowerPoint slide, including an online or offline video made for use as a countdown timer.

Step 1: Select a Countdown Timer Video

To create a timer using a video, search for a video with the time duration you need. Many YouTube timer videos specifically created for this purpose are available.

Locating countdown timer videos in YouTube

Step 2: Copy URL for Countdown Timer Video

To proceed, copy the URL of the video with the countdown timer. You can also copy the specific time duration for the timer video on websites like YouTube via the Share button.

Copying URL from YouTube

Step 3: Insert Online Timer Video

You can insert a video from an online source in PowerPoint via Video -> Online Videos . Use this option to insert the timer in PowerPoint.  Note: To use an offline timer video, pick a video via your device.

How to insert an online video in PowerPoint

To insert the video, paste the URL you copied earlier into the dialog box that appears. A preview of the video will then become available. Click Insert to add the video to your PowerPoint slide.

Pasting the address for the countdown video in PowerPoint

Step 4: Adjust and Play Timer Video

Once a video is added, you can adjust it on the slide using drag and drop to resize it, as well as add a frame, border, and effects, and make other adjustments via the Video Format tab.

Editing video settings in Video Format in PowerPoint

The image below shows the countdown timer video running in Slide Show mode in PowerPoint. The only downside of using an online timer might be the need for a stable Internet connection to avoid disruption. In such a case, you can also opt for an offline video embedded in PowerPoint to create your timer.

Slide with countdown timer video

Method 4: Use PowerPoint Templates

By using PowerPoint templates or countdown-themed Google Slides templates with PowerPoint, you can add a timer to your slides and discuss countdown themed topics.

Animated PowerPoint Timer Analog Clock

The Animated PowerPoint Timer Analog Clock is a presentation template with built-in timer slides. These slides provide timers for 1 minute, 10 minutes, and 30 minutes. You can copy and insert these timer slides in your PowerPoint presentations to add an analog countdown timer. Countdown timers like this presentation template can have a wide array of implications for an audience.

Animated PowerPoint Timer Analog Clock Template

Research has shown that countdown timers are good for customer retention when used in online ads , such as when a product has a countdown until it is on sale. Similarly, you can use templates like the Animated PowerPoint Timer Analog Clock to boost engagement by adding a timer before a major announcement, during presentation breaks, or to create curiosity before revealing important information. If you’re looking for a more generic clock and time-themed presentation template, you can check out the Analog Clock Time Management Diagram for PowerPoint . You might also find these Clock Templates for PowerPoint and Time Templates for PowerPoint useful for making similar presentations.

Analog Clock Time Management Diagram for PowerPoint

Final Words

A timer for PPT slides is not as commonly used as it should be, considering the various benefits a countdown timer can provide. The audience can easily relate to a clock for time management, be it an analog or digital clock or a bar showing the remaining time. By using timers, you can add curiosity to your slide decks, make events more lively, and provide a guide for remaining time during breaks, debates, and as presenters start their sessions.

There are many methods for adding a countdown timer to PowerPoint slides. You can create a custom design and use animations to time your slide elements to act as a timer, use a PowerPoint add-in, insert a timer video, or use a PowerPoint template with a built-in timer. The way you use a timer can vary depending on your needs and creativity. However, the uses and benefits of a timer can be immense and enable making your presentation or event look professionally organized.

Hi, I’m looking forward to the Mac version. Any chance of having the option of displaying with the surrounding circle around the time remaining – like the Nano version? Love the visual look – great for those who struggle with visualising how much time is left.

Hi Tony, this timer doesnt offer that. Yes, you need to use Nano timer for the extra visuals. Best

how do you insert the timer into a powerpoint presentation? I don’t want it to “float” on top of my presentation since i have to upload my presentation to the presenters computer.

we dont have such a timer as it would be limited to only one slide.

Hello, I’m SO excited to try your timer with my slides in my high school classroom. It’s going to be key to keeping all my students focused and on-task. Unfortunately, it says I cannot use it on my OS 10.10.5. It says it requires 10.12 or higher. But your website says it works on 10.10. Where are the older versions located?

Hi Nicole. Not sure why it doesnt work on your OS, might be some other issue. There are no older versions of this timer.

Can you put a non .exe version? with all the viruses going around, this makes us worried.

Hi Paul, it needs to be an .exe as it is a program file. The program is safe, but you need to get it from our page.

Hi I downloaded the Pro version of Slideshow Timer. It works fine and floats over all the stuff on my desktop and running apps, but when I hit play on a Keynote presentation it disappears. I need to to show up onscreen over the presentation.

Hi David, the program doesnt work with Keynote.

' src=

Thank you very much, it is very useful for me.

very good one, BR

This is amazing, thank you!!

Hi, I am trying to install the free version of Powerpoint Timer, which is not working properly. The internet browser said that the computer does not have problems but the source( https://bit.ly/SlideshowTimerPCv114 ) does not respond.

Hi there, not sure what could be the problem. Try opening and downloading with another browser. The download and the program are working fine.

' src=

This is amazing & free! I have been searching for something like that for some time now. Thank you!!

' src=

is it copyright free?? i mean can i use it for youtube videos

Hi, no, it is not copyright free.

Hello, I love the Floating options. How do you do that in power point. I love what the Dynamic Timer has down in thier work. I am looking for something where I can preprogram for specific times and dates in the past and future.

Where I can stop it on demand and it floats on the slides. I can also display to clocks at once. Who made you program. I would love to have mine made with sound effects. It’s for a history project.

Hi there, this is a simple timer, we are developing more advanced version, but it will be a different timer. And yes, you can display, run multiple timers at once.

' src=

Can this timer work just on 1 slide or 2 slides? I dont need it on every slide.

Sorry, cannot do that. However you can remove or hide the timer when not needed.

' src=

there must be option to resize the timer window and transparent background. it looks too odd timer covering a big portion/space on the slide show. audience keep noticing the timer more than presentation content. can you please add the said facility?

Hi there, resizing of the timer is possible (try it), however transparent background is not. Best

' src=

Hi — a good looking timer, but I need to insert it in a PPT slide and then take the presentation to another folder and application. So far, when trying to install the timer I select the Browse button to put it in an appropriate folder to transport the PPT presentation. However, your install process hangs up when I hit browse? Suggestions? Second, how can I insert and start the time from within a PPT slide. Thank you.

Hi there, the timer is a separate program from PPT so you cannot move it around – or start / stop, with presentation automatically. You can use the timer (on screen) where you need it, run the program and use it.

Timer for PowerPoint (SLIDESHOW TIMER)

i want to purchase the timer for windows. I have a doubt, if i format the window or change my laptop, do I need to purchase again or i can use it after formatting the window also.

Hi, you can use it again.

' src=

When I’m just presenting a ‘questionnaire pdf file’ alone, to my students during online exams; my students are not able to see this timer on the pdf file; even though I place the timer on the pdf file. Is there an option to pin this timer onto any files like pdf, word files etc… so that even if I present that particular pdf file or word file – the timer becomes visible to my kids??

Hi there, not sure which OS or program for presenting you are using?

' src=

Hi, is there an alarm sound on the completion of time ?

Hi, with free timer no.

' src=

Any chance of getting keyboard shortcuts for things like start/stop, set the time, exit app? Would be great for use with a StreamDeck and make it much more user friendly.

Hi, thank you for the comment. True, however this app does not allow this, only fullscreen timers do.

' src=

I am disappointed that the free version of this timer only allows for a 20 minute time limit. For it to be useful, there needs to be an option for a longer countdown.

Hi, thank you for the comment. There is more than 20 min, with the PRO version of the timer.

It’s awesome designed for me to have a web site, which is valuable in favor of my know-how. thanks admin

1 minute timer for presentation

As you can see in the above GIF, the PowerPoint Side has two visual cues – a timer progress bar across the top of the slide and a countdown ‘clock’ at the bottom right. Both of these were easily achieved using simple animation that I got the idea from on this post. The problem I encountered was that the ribbon only shows a maximum of 59 seconds for an animation to occur. Whilst encouraging people to keep to 1 minute per slide might be a good thing in many contexts, the reality is this would be too short.

Fortunately, I had recently attended a work presentation from Howard Gold from Three Cat Presentations and I pinged him asking if he knew any work arounds. The trick, it turns out, is to not use the ribbon for animation settings, but to instead drill down:

  • Add the rectangle across the top of your slide in the colour of your choosing (red in my instance)
  • Add the wipe animation (from left) under the effect options
  • Open the “animation pane” (this was the key I was missing)

1 minute timer for presentation

  • Find the object in the Animation Pane that you’re animating and then from the drop down arrow to the right, choose “Effect Options”

1 minute timer for presentation

  • Select the “Timing” tab that opens and then you have the “Duration” that you can set any value you wish. For example, if you wanted the slide indicator to show for 5mins then you’d choose 300 seconds:

1 minute timer for presentation

Problem solved (albeit, requiring delving into sub menus of PowerPoint! Howard also offered a great suggestion for the second timer visualisation:

Another nice way to do it is to create 2 circles the same size (like a clock face) and place them on top of each other. Make them different colors. Set the animation on the top circle to Wheel and then choose your time preference. This will create a clock like effect

If you’re wanting to give this a go, then I’ve uploaded my PPTX file that you can get a copy of and tweak the settings here:

Remember, the outcome should look something like this:

Creating GIF Quickly in PowerPoint

When you write a lot of blogs, animated GIF can often be your friend. Of course, you can create a YouTube Video and embed, but often a short, animated image is a quicker way to get the point across – to wit, the GIF above showing my PowerPoint visualisation. I’ve occasionally used some of the free, online GIF makers on the web, but they typically brand your image with their watermark – something I generally prefer to avoid if I can.

I was pleased, therefore, when I came across this Office Insider article showing that since late 2019 the ability to export slides as GIF inside PowerPoint could achieve what I wanted! There is also the official Office Support article to assist, and I gave this ago to create the above and it worked seamlessly.

Often, however, you’re wanting a GIF of a video media file and this can be quite a different thing altogether to make these quickly and compress to a file size that is acceptable for load times. I tested this with a short video I made of a hike to Foggy Peak I completed recently and I will share the results with you below. For reference, the original video was 13 seconds long (so I ‘speed it up slightly’ and was only 11.8MB in size.

I created the same video three times, compressing it to 10 seconds in length and using the small / medium / large file size compressions:

Small GIF – 9.8MB

Medium gif – 37.7mb, large gif – 134mb.

WordPress did not like embedding an image of 134MB seemingly, so you’ll have to be content with the two above!

For better or worse, I use PowerPoint just about every day and blog often once a week on average, so I’m glad I know these two tips to help with timely presentations and easy media creation. Trust it was useful for you too!

You can download the PowerPoint templates with the countdown timers for free and use them as standalone presentations. If you'd like a different look, edit the background of the slide(s) in Slide Master View but you won't be able to edit the numbers in Normal View since that are actually a set of stacked pictures, each animated to appear at a different time interval.

If you prefer, you can copy the slide(s) with the timers to your own presentation and edit them if necessary.

How to Insert Timer Into Google Slides? [An EASY Way!]

By: Author Shrot Katewa

How to Insert Timer Into Google Slides? [An EASY Way!]

Whether you want to allow your audience a few seconds to answer a quiz question, or whether you want to let your audience know the time left for the break to end, having a ticking timer on Google Slides is a great way to do that!

But, Google Slides doesn’t provide the option to add a timer by default. So, how do you insert a timer in Google Slides?

To insert a timer in Google Slides, you can add a video that contains a countdown timer. Alternatively, you can also use the “Slide Timer” extension. Using the extension allows cusotmization of text formatting, and a few additional features which are not available when using a video!

This article will provide you with more insights on adding a timer in Google Slides. We will be discussing a few different methods. You will get the step-by-step process along with the images so you too can add it to your presentation!

So, let’s get started!

1. How to Insert a Timer in Google Slides?

I’ve captured all the steps in a video format as well. If you wish to learn by watching a video instead of reading this article, you can do so by clicking on the play button on the video below –

If you prefer learning through reading, you can continue to do so by going through the steps in the rest of the article!

When you need to give your audience time to complete an action such as think of an answer, writing a solution, responding to a question, or perhaps even ensuring that people come back on time after a break, it is good to have a timer displayed on the screen.

This will make sure that everyone is aware of the time left to finish the task required!

Although Google Slides doesn’t offer a direct option to add a timer in the presentation, there are multiple ways to insert a timer in Google Slides.

In this article, we shall take a look at two different methods.

1a. Method 1 – Inserting a Video

The first method includes inserting a video that has a timer. You can use any video for this purpose. The easiest way to find such a video is through YouTube.

One thing to keep in mind is that when you add a YouTube video to the presentation, you will need to make sure that your computer is connected to the internet for the video to work when you are giving the presentation.

For safety purposes, you can perhaps download the video and upload it to the presentation to make sure it works. However, for the purpose of this example, I’ll show you how to add a timer by inserting a video in Google Slides .

Let’s take a look at the steps one-by-one:

Step-1: Search for a Video with a Timer on YouTube

1 minute timer for presentation

There are a ton of different video options available on YouTube for a timer video. Simply type in the duration of the timer that you want in the search bar.

For the sake of this example, I’ve gone with a 3 minuter timer.

From the options that appear in the search, go with single color background (ideally black). You’ll get to know why, in a minute!

Step-2: Copy the Video URL

1 minute timer for presentation

Once you have chosen a video, open it by clicking on it.

Then, click on the address bar. Select the URL and copy it using the “ Ctrl+C ” options. You can also right-click on it and click on “ Copy “.

Step-3: Click on the Option to Insert a Video

1 minute timer for presentation

Now, go back to your Google Slides presentation. Open the slide where you want to insert the timer.

Then, click on the “Insert” tab in the menu bar and select the “Video” option from the “Insert” menu. This will prompt an “Insert video” dialog box.

Step-4: Insert the Video in your Presentation

1 minute timer for presentation

The next step is to insert the video. Click on the “ Search ” tab first. Here, in the search bar, paste the URL (link) that we copied in step 2 and hit enter.

You can also search for a term instead of pasting the link. So, for instance, instead of going on YouTube to find a video, you can also use the search bar here to do the same. But, I usually get much better results faster when I search it on YouTube and paste the link here.

Once you have the video appear below, click on it to select it. Then, click on “ Select ” to insert it on your slide.

You can also upload a video at this point by clicking on the “ Google Drive ” option. That option will allow you to add a video that you may have either downloaded or perhaps received from your colleague.

Step-5: Adjust the Playback Settings

1 minute timer for presentation

Now, the next step is to adjust the playback settings for the video.

When you insert the video on the slide, the “ Format ” panel on the right should automatically appear. If it doesn’t, simply right-click on the video, and click on the “Format” option.

Here, you can adjust the starting and ending point of the video along with tweaks to a few additional settings.

Step-6: Adjust the Video and Slide Background

1 minute timer for presentation

Now, the last thing that I recommend you do is first, make the video as big as possible such that it fits the slide on the top and the bottom.

This will display the video on the complete slide during the slideshow mode.

If there is still some blank space left on the slide, then you can choose to change the slide background to match the background of the video (just the way I’ve done it in the image above).

This is where choosing a video with a monotone background (as mentioned in step 1) comes in handy!

If you are unable to find the color for your slide back in the default options provided that match with the background of the video, you can use the eyedropper tool for color matching in Google Slides .

1 minute timer for presentation

Once you’ve made the changes, simply enter the presentation in the “ Slideshow ” mode and watch the timer tick!

Method 2 – Using the Slides Timer Extension

If you don’t want to add a video to your presentation or if you want more customization to the way the text looks for the timers, and make a few changes to it, you can use the “ Slides Timer ” extension.

The “Slides Timer” extension has been designed by ClayCodes ; a third-party open-source creator.

The Slides Timer extension comes as a Google Chrome browser extension rather than an “Add-on” item.

Through this add-on, all you need to do is type in a simple text-based code and it will convert the code into a function. We shall take a look at the

To add the extension, you have to first click here to find the Slides Timer extension in the Chrome Web Store.

Then follow the 3 quick steps.

Step-1: Click on “Add to Chrome”

1 minute timer for presentation

The first step is to click on the “Add to Chrome” button located on the right side of the screen. This will prompt a dialog box.

Step-2: Click on the “Add Extension” button

In the dialog box, click on the “Add Extension” button to allow access to the extension. You will now see another dialog box notifying that the Slide Timer extension has been added.

Step-3: Click on the “Slides Timer” extension

1 minute timer for presentation

Now all you have to do is open the Google Slides presentation. Then click on the “Extensions” icon which looks like a puzzle piece beside the browser “Search bar” . In the “Extensions” dialog box, click on the “Slides Timer” extension to access a tutorial.

How to Use the Slides Timer Extension?

The Slides Timer extension has various features that you can use. You can create a timer, stopwatch, clock, etc.

1 minute timer for presentation

To create a countdown timer, you have to first click on the “Text box” icon in the toolbar located right under the menu bar.

In the text box, type in “<<“preferred time”->>” . For example, for a five-minute countdown, type in “<<5:00->>” in the text box.

Next, click on the “Slideshow” or “Present” option and the text will be automatically converted to a countdown timer.

1 minute timer for presentation

To create a count-up timer or a stopwatch, type in “<<“preferred time”+>>” in a text box in the slide where you want to add the timer.

For example, if you want the stopwatch to start at zero seconds, type in “<<00:00+>>” . It will be automatically turned into a stopwatch on the “Present” screen.

1 minute timer for presentation

In the example above, I’ve started my stopwatch from “5:00”. You can see the stopwatch counting up in the slideshow mode in the image above.

You can also display the current time in the local time zone using the Slides Timer extension. To do so, insert a text box in the preferred slide and type in “<<time>>” . In the “Present” screen, this will show the time in the AM/PM format.

To add the current date in your Google Slides presentation slide, insert a text box and type in “<<date>>” . In the “Present” screen, this will turn into “mm/dd/yyyy” format date. This will always show the current date when you present without any manual adjustment.

Move to Next Slide

With Slides Timer, you can also add a timer that automatically moves to the next slide when time is up. For example, you can create a countdown trigger that moves to the next slide after 2 minutes. All you have to do is insert a text box and type in “<<02:00-+>>” .

2. How to Time Your Slides to Autoplay in Google Slides?

Google Slides does provide you with an option to time the slides such that you can set it on “Autoplay” and let the slides automatically keep changing!

This is a great option especially when you are at an event, and you just want put the presentation on the screen, set it, and forget it!

This topic actually deserves an entire article! Thus, I’ve written a separate post to cover the nuances of this topic in great detail in a step-by-step manner. Check out my other article on this topic here !

One Minute Timer for PowerPoint

1 minute timer for presentation

Early in our blog we’ve released 1 Minute Timer presentation for PowerPoint and soon after two days, we’ve received another One Minute Timer presentation from a user named Nigel from New York. We were thrilled to see that presentation because the concept was great and we were glad that our early release was an inspiration which made him to create this amazing presentation.

Here is what Nigel says — “ Your One Minute Timer was amazing. When I was trying to work out a presentation with your timer, I’ve got an idea to make it even better. I don’t say my timer is better than yours, but I am truly inspired by your concept  of One Minute Timer Presentation. Hope you like it. ”

We thank you Nigel for this amazing presentation, we really loved it. You’ve done a good  job on this presentation.

1 minute Timer 02

Our PPT Geek Squad loved this basic animation applied to the slide objects, they wanted to add some more features to make this presentation more cool, so they enhanced this presentation by changing the slide background and adding few animated objects. Watch the below video to see how the presentation look like.

Having complete permissions from Nigel. We are happy to keep this presentation here as a free download. Just like our early downloads you can recolor, resize and alter animations as required.

A Full Transcript of Michelle Obama’s Speech at the 2024 Democratic National Convention

F ormer First Lady Michelle Obama took to the Democratic National Convention stage in Chicago on Tuesday night, calling on supporters to “do something” to ensure Kamala Harris wins the November election against Donald Trump.

Read More: ‘Hope Is Making a Comeback’: The Key Moments From Michelle Obama’s 2024 DNC Speech

The following transcript was prepared and provided to TIME by Rev , using AI-powered software, and it was reviewed and edited for accuracy by TIME staff.

Thank you guys. OK. We got a big night ahead. Thank you all so much. Thank you. Hello, Chicago!

Something, something wonderfully magical is in the air, isn’t it? Yeah.

You know, we’re feeling it here in this arena, but it’s spreading all across this country we love. A familiar feeling that’s been buried too deep for far too long. You know what I’m talking about. It’s the contagious power of hope, the anticipation, the energy, the exhilaration of once again being on the cusp of a brighter day. The chance to vanquish the demons of fear, division, and hate that have consumed us and continue pursuing the unfinished promise of this great nation. The dream that our parents and grandparents fought and died and sacrificed for. America, hope is making a comeback.

But, to be honest, I am realizing that until recently, I have mourned the dimming of that hope. And maybe you’ve experienced the same feelings—it’s that deep pit in my stomach, a palpable sense of dread about the future. And for me, that mourning has also been mixed with my own personal grief. The last time I was here in my hometown was to memorialize my mother, the woman who showed me the meaning of hard work and humility and decency. The woman who set my moral compass high and showed me the power of my own voice. Folks, I still feel her loss so profoundly. I wasn’t even sure if I’d be steady enough to stand before you tonight, but my heart compelled me to be here because of the sense of duty that I feel to honor her memory and to remind us all not to squander the sacrifices our elders made to give us a better future.

You see, my mom in her steady quiet way, lived out that striving sense of hope every single day of her life. She believed that all children, all people have value. That anyone can succeed if given the opportunity. She and my father didn’t aspire to be wealthy—in fact, they were suspicious of folks who took more than they needed. They understood that it wasn’t enough for their kids to thrive if everyone else around us was drowning. So my mother volunteered at the local school. She always looked out for the other kids on the block. She was glad to do the thankless, unglamorous work that, for generations, has strengthened the fabric of this nation. The belief that if you do unto others, if you love thy neighbor, if you work and scrape and sacrifice, it will pay off—if not for you, then maybe for your children or your grandchildren.

You see, those values have been passed on through family farms and factory towns, through tree-lined streets and crowded tenements, through prayer groups and national guard units and social studies classrooms. Those were the values my mother poured into me until her very last breath.

Kamala Harris and I built our lives on those same foundational values. Even though our mothers grew up an ocean apart, they shared the same belief in the promise of this country. That’s why her mother moved here from India at 19. It’s why she taught Kamala about justice, about the obligation to lift others up, about our responsibility to give more than we take. She’d often tell her daughter: “Don’t sit around and complain about things. Do something.”

So, with that voice in her head, Kamala went out and she worked hard in school, graduating from an HBCU, earning her law degree at a state school. And then she went on to work for the people fighting to hold law breakers accountable, strengthening the rule of law, fighting to get folks better wages, cheaper prescription drugs, a good education, decent healthcare, childcare, elder care. From a middle class household, Kamala worked her way up to become Vice President of the United States of America.

My girl, Kamala Harris, is more than ready for this moment. She is one of the most qualified people ever to seek the office of the presidency. And she is one of the most dignified—a tribute to her mother, to my mother, and to your mother too. The embodiment of the stories we tell ourselves about this country. Her story is your story. It’s my story. It’s the story of the vast majority of Americans trying to build a better life.

Look, Kamala knows, like we do, that regardless of where you come from, what you look like, who you love, how you worship, or what’s in your bank account, we all deserve the opportunity to build a decent life. All of our contributions deserve to be accepted and valued. Because no one has a monopoly on what it means to be an American. No one.

Kamala has shown her allegiance to this nation, not by spewing anger and bitterness, but by living a life of service and always pushing the doors of opportunity open to others. She understands that most of us will never be afforded the grace of failing forward. We will never benefit from the affirmative action of generational wealth. If we bankrupt the business or choke in a crisis, we don’t get a second, third, or fourth chance. If things don’t go our way, we don’t have the luxury of whining or cheating others to get further ahead. No. We don’t get to change the rules, so we always win. If we see a mountain in front of us, we don’t expect there to be an escalator waiting to take us to the top. No. We put our heads down. We get to work. In America, we do something.

( Crowd chants: “Do something!” )

And throughout her entire life, that’s what we’ve seen from Kamala Harris, the steel of her spine, the steadiness of her upbringing, the honesty of her example, and yes, the joy of her laughter and her light.

It couldn’t be more obvious: Of the two major candidates in this race, only Kamala Harris truly understands the unseen labor and unwavering commitment that has always made America great.

Now, unfortunately, we know what comes next. We know folks are going to do everything they can to distort her truth. My husband and I, sadly, know a little something about this. For years, Donald Trump did everything in his power to try to make people fear us. See, his limited, narrow view of the world made him feel threatened by the existence of two hardworking, highly educated, successful people who happen to be Black.

Wait, I want to know: Who’s going to tell him that the job he’s currently seeking might just be one of those “Black jobs”?

Look, it’s his same old con: doubling down on ugly, misogynistic, racist lies as a substitute for real ideas and solutions that will actually make people’s lives better. Look, because cutting our healthcare, taking away our freedom to control our bodies, the freedom to become a mother through IVF like I did—those things are not going to improve the health outcomes of our wives, mothers, and daughters. Shutting down the Department of Education, banning our books—none of that will prepare our kids for the future. Demonizing our children for being who they are and loving who they love—look, that doesn’t make anybody’s life better.

Instead, it only makes us small. And let me tell you this: Going small is never the answer. Going small is the opposite of what we teach our kids. Going small is petty, it’s unhealthy, and quite frankly, it’s unpresidential.

So, why would any of us accept this from anyone seeking our highest office? Why would we normalize that type of backward leadership? Doing so only demeans and cheapens our politics. It only serves to further discourage good, big-hearted people from wanting to get involved at all. America, our parents taught us better than that, and we deserve so much better than that.

That’s why we must do everything in our power to elect two of those good, big-hearted people. There is no other choice than Kamala Harris and Tim Walz. No other choice.

But, as we embrace this renewed sense of hope, let us not forget the despair we have felt. Let us not forget what we are up against. Yes, Kamala and Tim are doing great now. We’re loving it. They’re packing arenas across the country. Folks are energized. We are feeling good. But, remember there are still so many people who are desperate for a different outcome, who are ready to question and criticize every move Kamala makes, who are eager to spread those lies, who don’t want to vote for a woman, who will continue to prioritize building their wealth over ensuring that everyone has enough.

So no matter how good we feel tonight or tomorrow or the next day, this is going to be an uphill battle. So folks, we cannot be our own worst enemies. No. See, because the minute something goes wrong, the minute a lie takes hold, folks, we cannot start wringing our hands. We cannot get a Goldilocks complex about whether everything is just right. And we cannot indulge our anxieties about whether this country will elect someone like Kamala instead of doing everything we can to get someone like Kamala elected.

Kamala and Tim, they have lived amazing lives and I am confident that they will lead with compassion, inclusion, and grace. But they are still only human. They are not perfect. And like all of us, they will make mistakes. But luckily y’all, this is not just on them. No, uh-uh. This is up to us, all of us, to be the solution that we seek. It’s up to all of us to be the antidote to the darkness and division. Look, I don’t care how you identify politically—whether you’re a Democrat, Republican, Independent, or none of the above. This is our time to stand up for what we know in our hearts is right. To stand up, not just for our basic freedoms but for decency and humanity; for basic respect, dignity, and empathy; for the values at the very foundation of this democracy.

It’s up to us to remember what Kamala’s mother told her: “Don’t just sit around and complain. Do something.” So if they lie about her—and they will—we’ve got to do something. If we see a bad poll—and we will—we’ve got to put down that phone and do something. If we start feeling tired, if we start feeling that dread creeping back in, we gotta pick ourselves up, throw water on our face, and what?

We only have two and a half months, y’all, to get this done. Only 11 weeks to make sure every single person we know is registered and has a voting plan. So we cannot afford for anyone, anyone, anyone, America, to sit on their hands and wait to be called. Don’t complain if no one from the campaign has specifically reached out to you to ask you for your support. There is simply no time for that kind of foolishness. You know what you need to do.

So, consider this to be your official ask: Michelle Obama is asking you—no, I’m telling y’all—to do something.

Because, y’all, this election is gonna be close. In some states, just a handful—listen to me—a handful of votes in every precinct could decide the winner. So we need to vote in numbers that erase any doubt. We need to overwhelm any effort to suppress us. Our fate is in our hands. In 77 days, we have the power to turn our country away from the fear, division, and smallness of the past. We have the power to marry our hope with our action. We have the power to pay forward the love, sweat, and sacrifice of our mothers and fathers and all those who came before us.

We did it before, y’all, and we sure can do it again. Let us work like our lives depend on it, and let us keep moving our country forward and go higher—yes, always higher—than we’ve ever gone before, as we elect the next President and Vice President of the United States, Kamala Harris and Tim Walz.

Thank you all. God bless.

Now, before I go, I have one more job tonight. Yeah, one more job. You all, thank you for all the love, but it is now my honor to introduce somebody who knows a whole lot about hope, someone who has spent his life strengthening our democracy—and let me tell you, as someone who lives with him, he wakes up every day, every day, and thinks about what’s best for this country. Please welcome America’s 44th President and the love of my life, Barack Obama.
