  • LinkedIn profile

Do not include a home address or links to your other social media pages. You can either put this information on the top of the first page or, better yet, include it as a heading so that it will show up on all the pages

Title — The next part of your resume is the title. This should be the same as the position you’re applying for. It lets the recruiter know exactly what position you’re interested in and sets the tone as they are reviewing the resume.

Summary — It is good to start your resume with a 2 to 3 sentence summary if your skills, experience, or education related to the job you’re applying for. This allows the recruiter to quickly recognize your qualifications and encourages them to read the remainder of the resume.

Professional Experience — You then turn to your employment experience. The section will contain details about the jobs you have worked at during the last 10 to 15 years.  Even if you have more experience, this is all you need to include because anything prior to this is either no longer relevant or has already been discussed in other job descriptions. The jobs should be detailed in reverse chronological order, starting with the most recent first.

When listing your jobs, include:

  • Position or title
  • Employer – Location (City, State) – Dates Employed (Month/Year – Month/Year)

You then provide a 1 to 2 sentence summary of your responsibilities and major achievements. Hobbies — This is an important section of your resume, and you should be adding them in. Hobbies show the hiring manager more about your personality and personal life, and can also help develop a connection between you and the hiring manager. List out any achievements linked to your hobbies, and provide a little bit of detail instead of blandly listing a one-word hobby.

References : Unlike CVs that are used throughout the world, American resumes do not typically include references. If an employer needs references prior to hiring you, they will request them after you have progressed through the interview process and are being considered as one of the final candidates.

Writing an effective American resume is easy if you follow the guidelines provided. You need to write with the purpose of convincing the employer you can contribute to helping them achieve their business objectives. The objective is to create enough interest in you to incent the recruiter to invite you to an interview.

Following the recommended format and structure of an American resume makes it easy to read and provides a flow. Using the valuable space at the top half of the first page to summarize your qualifications is critical. This gets the balance of the resume read and increases your chances for an interview. Including metrics throughout your resume will keep it interesting and help the employer understand how you can help them to “make money, save money or save time.”

Avoid any mention of personal information in a resume. This may result in automatic rejection, even though you may be one of the better candidates for the job. You should also not include references. These aren’t expected in America and will be requested later in the interview process if the employer needs them.

Finally, remember to write your American resume keeping the job requirements in mind. Any content that isn’t relevant to these may distract the reader from your key message and shouldn’t be included.

  • Too many long (and unexplained) employment gaps

  • Summary − a brief description of what you have achieved in your education and profession
  • Academic qualifications − your academic qualification; degree(s) (descending, with most advanced first). Include key courses studied, GPA, papers written, studies performed

The short format or business CV should be 1-2 pages long (A4 format). It only consists of facts, dates, and numbers. Remember, recruiters only spend 7 seconds reviewing this type of resume before deciding about your qualifications, so you want to capture their interest.

The content of this type of British CV is:

  • Personal information – Name, phone, email, LinkedIn URL and location (not an address)
  • Professional summary – key skills, experience, and soft skills aligned with the job you are applying for
  • Working experience – title, employer, location, and dates, starting with the most recent job. Include a brief description of the role, followed by a bulleted list of contributions and achievements for each position
  • Formal education & training - university, dates, and places, but no grades or courses
  • Languages, skills, proficiencies related to the job you are applying for

Both types of CVs include your personal information, education and qualifications, work experience, interests and achievements, skills, and references. The additional information in the long format CV provides details important to recruiters and hiring managers in professions where specific coursework, publications, software skills, and other, more detailed experience and education and work experience is key to selecting a candidate.  Make sure you provide as much detail as possible when constructing a long format CV.

Also, you should always tailor your CV to the job you are applying for. Use a modern but professional format. Few if any graphic elements; these aren’t effective and will confuse Applicant Tracking Systems (ATS).

It is important to consider including references in your CV when applying for a position in the UK. Employers expect these and a significant majority of them take the time to contact the references you provide. It’s best to provide at least 2 references. As an alternative, you can write "references available on request."

Prior to adding someone's name and information to your CV, you should contact the person to ask their permission to use them as a reference. It is also considerate of you to provide them with a copy of your CV and discuss your job search objectives with them. Remind them of what you did when you worked together and discuss a few contributions you made while there.

The Asian resume

Similar to the long-form British CV, resumes in Asia tend be longer than the traditional American and European resume. The best practices here are to include all the information you normally would: personal information, contact details, work history, academics, skills, languages, and references.

But, you should also include a professional photo. Unlike the United States where it's common to add a photo to your resume only in certain industries, in Asia it is generally expected that you include a photo across every industry. Also include two copies of your resume — one in English, and another in the native language of that country.

Resumes in Asia are expected to be more personal in nature, where you will include your age, gender, marital status, interests, nationality, and visa status. As with a long-form CV, you should expect to be more detailed about your skills and work experience than you would in a short-form American style resume.

Asian resume tip — Even if you don’t know the native language, showing some cultural knowledge and sensitivity by including some wording or greeting will always be appreciated.

What are the three main types of resumes?

  • Reverse-chronological. Lists work experience in reverse order with the more recent job first.
  • Functional. A resume that focuses on functional skills, with only employers and employment dates listed.
  • Combined. An initial section for function skills with a normal chronological work experience afterwards.

Spanish resumes are similar to British ones, but require you to be more clear about your language abilities. This should be front and center in your resume.

If Spanish is your second language, be sure to use templates and examples designed for a Spanish-speaking audience. Generally, Spanish resumes are 1-2 pages and include the following information:

  • Education and GPA information — both high school and post-secondary

  • Place the education section above work experience—this is a common expectation in Russia.

Additionally, using only the PDF format is recommended, avoiding PNGs, JPEGs, or other formats.

For instance, participating in a team sport demonstrates teamwork, which can work to your advantage. Don’t overlook seemingly basic or obvious skills, such as computer proficiency and familiarity with specific software programs, these details can set you apart from candidates with similar resumes.

However, it’s crucial to avoid listing skills you don’t possess. Honesty is key, especially considering that background checks with past employers may uncover any inaccuracies, and it is a standard practice in North America, so avoid fabricating tasks or responsibilities, as the truth tends to come out. Spend minimal time on graphics, images and colors, a text-based resume is sufficient. A lot of people just aren’t aware that there are different résumé formats that apply to different career situations. As a result, they often end up using the wrong format entirely or, worse, randomly throwing bits of information together without following a clear, logical layout.

And in a highly competitive job market, this can seriously hinder their chances of landing an interview — never mind a job!

That’s where this helpful guide comes in.

Here we’ll explore the best structures and formats around — from the traditional to the unconventional. We’ll show you when you should use one format (and when you shouldn’t), and we’ll provide you with real-life examples for inspiration.

Traditional formats

There are three standard — or traditional, if you prefer — résumé formats: the chronological, the skills-based, and the combination format. Although similar to one another in terms of formatting (they all use basic text and a simple design to showcase a candidate’s professional background), they each serve a very different purpose.

Let’s take a closer look at them.

1. Chronological résumé

First up is the chronological résumé .

Also — and perhaps more appropriately — known as the reverse-chronological résumé, it provides potential employers with a detailed history of your work experience, organized sequentially, starting with the most recent position you held and working backwards.

It typically consists of the following résumé sections in this order:

  • Header (your name and contact information )
  • Profile (a career summary or objective )
  • Employment history
  • Educational history (if you’re a student, move this above your employment history)
  • Optional additional sections ( languages , certifications , awards, etc)

The chronological résumé is the most common format of them all — and for good reason, too. Out of the three main traditional styles, it is the only one that can be easily adapted to virtually any profession, industry or career situation.

That said, because the format is so commonly used, it can be all the more difficult to attract the reader’s attention — as such, you’ll need to make an extra effort to make your make your résumé stand out from the crowd.

2. Skills-based résumé

Whereas a chronological résumé showcases your experience and qualifications, a skills-based résumé (or functional résumé) showcases your professional skills , especially those which are most transferable to the job you’re applying for.

Of course, you’ll still include your employment history, but you’ll move this towards the bottom, and you don’t really have to expand on each individual position other than listing job titles, employment dates and company names. The focus should, instead, be placed on three to five of your most relevant skills, providing tangible evidence of each skill with a few bullet points .

Sections in a skills-based document should typically follow this order:

  • Skills summary
  • Additional skills
  • Optional additional sections

Unlike their chronological cousins, skills-based résumés aren’t for everyone. They are, however, a particularly good format choice if you have large gaps in your employment history , you’re in the middle of a career change , or you’re looking to promote a specific skillset.

3. Combination résumé

The combination résumé is a hybrid of the chronological and the skills-based résumés, in that it gives equal weight to both your experience and your skills.

Structurally, it should follow this order:

  • Core competencies / Achievements / Skills summary
  • Educational history

Combination résumés are ideal for jobseekers applying for jobs that require a technical skillset or who are looking to change industries.

As the global job market is becoming an increasingly competitive place, many jobseekers are ditching the traditional curriculum vitae and instead employing non-traditional, more modern methods to communicate their skills and qualifications to prospective employers.

We’ll explore some of the most common non-traditional résumé formats below.

4. Infographic résumé

Infographic résumés  are closely related to the three traditional formats we examined above.

Indeed, they present the same information you’ll normally find in, say, a chronological résumé. But unlike a chronological résumé or any of its cousins, which all use plain old text to highlight a candidate’s educational and professional background, an infographic format résumé relies on design elements like graphics, charts, icons, colors and nice fonts to convey that information.

Meanwhile, there is no one-size-fits-all structure for infographic résumés. This is what makes them so popular among designers, especially, as they’re afforded a unique level of creative freedom to showcase their design skills.

In theory, anyone can use an infographic format, but if you’re applying for a more conservative job —in banking, for example — then you should stick to a more traditional format if you want to be taken seriously. We should also point out here that, unless you’re an experienced designer or at least willing to purchase a uniquely designed résumé template , you should stay clear of this option.

5. Mini résumé

A mini-résumé is exactly what it sounds like: a highly condensed version of the full thing, both in terms of size and length. It typically takes the form of a business card, listing your name, job title and contact details on one side and a snapshot of your biggest selling points and prominent achievements on the other.

Mini résumés are great for when attending networking events, industry conferences or career fairs , as you’re able to leave potential employers with something less bulky than a comprehensive two-page résumé but something more valuable than your average business card.

Its compact size (typically 3.5 x 2 inches, just like a business card) also makes it easy to carry — perfect for handing out to new contacts you meet unexpectedly!

6. Video résumé

Also known as a visumé (a portmanteau of the words “video” and “résumé”), a video résumé is essentially an on-camera job application. It’s a filmed presentation of your candidacy, designed to showcase not only your skills and experience but also your personality — something a traditional résumé isn’t quite capable of.

Although virtually anyone can create a video résumé, they tend to be a lot more fun and vibrant in nature and, as such, shouldn’t be used for applications to more conservative employers. Also, and perhaps more importantly, if you have little to no filmmaking experience, then we strongly advise against creating in video format – unless, of course, you’re happy to hire the services of a professional to help you.

7. Résumé Website

A résumé website is essentially the online version of your résumé but affords you with a lot more flexibility in terms of structure, content and length.

Whether it’s a one-page or a multi-page one, your website should cover the basics , including who you are, what you do and how visitors can contact you. If you’re a creative professional, meanwhile, you should also include a portfolio section showcasing your best work. You can even demonstrate your industry expertise to potential employers and clients alike with a regularly updated — and SEO-driven — blog .

One of the great things about résumé websites is that you don’t have to be a design superstar to create one. Indeed, there are many website builders out there (both free and paid-for) that offer ready-built customizable templates. Take this gorgeous Wix.com website template, for example:

8. LinkedIn Profile

Although technically not a résumé, a well-written LinkedIn profile is the next best thing. And considering how big of a role LinkedIn plays in today’s digital job search , you simply can’t afford to not have one of your own.

Your LinkedIn profile will feature the same sections as your résumé (including a professional summary, your employment history, education and skills), but you’re not limited to a  two-page résumé to convey all the important information. In fact, career experts recommend adding as many (relevant) details as possible to your profile, including links, videos, presentations and publications. Of course, your LinkedIn profile shouldn’t replace your résumé, and neither should it replicate it.

One of the great things about LinkedIn profiles is that anyone can create one — whatever their experience, qualifications, profession or industry. And you don’t have to adopt the same formal tone you’ll normally use on a more traditional résumé. When choosing which résumé format to use, you need to consider your specific career situation. Indeed, what might work for someone else — even in the same profession and industry as you — doesn’t necessarily mean it will work for you too.

  • Am I looking to change careers or industries ?
  • Am I looking for work in a creative field?
