Sanak Review: विद्युत के फैंस और एक्शन के दीवानों के लिए है फिल्म, बाकी न रखें ज्यादा उम्मीद

Sanak review: फिल्म भले ही विद्युत जामवाल के एक्शन दृश्यों के सहारे आगे बढ़ती है लेकिन यहां असली सनक आतंकी लीडर बने चंदन रॉय में नजर आती है..

Sanak Movie Review: यह फिल्म शुरू होती है तीन साल से शादीशुदा हीरो-हीरोइन के बच्चा चाहने के इरादे से लेकिन अस्पताल में पहुंचती है, एक्शन वाली कहानी कहने के लिए. सनक ज्यादा देर नहीं लगाती और सीधे मुद्दे पर आ जाती है कि यहां बात कम होगी और धांय-धांय, धूम-धड़ाम, लात-घूंसों का प्रयोग ज्यादा होगा. यही विद्युत जामवाल की फिल्मों की पहचान है. विद्युत ने बॉलीवुड में हॉलीवुड एक्शन स्टार के अंदाज वाली पहचान बनाई है, जिसमें वह खुद मैदान में उतरते हैं. अपने सीन खुद डिजाइन करते हैं. बॉडी डबल नहीं रखते.

अतः मामला अधिक विश्वसनीय और रोचक बन जाता है. लेकिन समस्या यह है कि उनकी फिल्मों की कहानी में कुछ नयापन नहीं होता. यही बात उन्हें लंबे समय से आगे बढ़ने से रोक रही है. सनक में भी यही हुआ है. दुखद यह भी है कि विद्युत यहां अपनी पिछली एक्शन फिल्मों से ऐसा कुछ अलग नहीं करते, जिसे आप सनक कहें. न काम में और न किरदार में. ऐसे में यह फिल्म केवल उन दर्शकों के लिए है, जो या तो विद्युत के फैन हैं या जिन्हें फिल्म में सिवा ऐक्शन के और कुछ नहीं चाहिए.

सनक की नायिका अंशिका (रुक्मिणी मैत्रा) की अस्पताल में एक बड़ी, महंगी मगर सफल सर्जरी हुई है. सब ठीक है और अब विवान (विद्युत जामवाल) उसे घर लाने की तैयारी में है. इधर, अंशिका को बाहर आने में कुछ घंटे बाकी हैं कि तभी अस्पताल में आतंकी घुस जाते हैं. जिनका लीडर है साजू (चंदन रॉय सान्याल). आतंकी अस्पताल में मरीजों, नर्सों, डॉक्टरों को बंधक बना लेते हैं. क्या है इन आतंकियों का मिशन और क्या चाहते हैं. यह सरकार/पुलिस से, यही कहानी में आगे खुलता है. यहां पुलिस (नेहा धूपिया) बंधकों के कारण आतंकियों के आगे मजबूर है. मगर विवान नौ मंजिला अस्पताल के ग्राउंड फ्लोर पर है और उसे अंशिका की चिंता है. वह कैसे बचाएगा अंशिका और बाकी लोगों को. सनक यही बताती है.

डिज्नी हॉटस्टार पर रिलीज हुई यह फिल्म अपने कथानक में निराश करती है. पिछले दिनों ही ओटीटी पर ‘मुंबई डायरीजः 26/11’ जैसी सीरीज अस्पताल में आतंकियों के घुसने और बंधक ड्रामे पर रिलीज हुई, जो नाटकीयता और हकीकत दोनों में सचाई के अधिक करीब है. थ्रिल पैदा करती है. इसी तरह डिज्नी हॉटस्टार पर ही वेब सीरीज ‘हॉस्टेजेस’ के दो सीजन हैं, जिनका रोमांच बांधे रहता है. ऐसी की कई अन्य सीरीज मोबाइल पर दर्शकों के पास उपलब्ध हैं. अब अगर बंधक ड्रामे के कथानक पर किसी निर्देशक-ऐक्टर को कुछ कहना है तो उसे नया कंटेंट, नए आइडिया और नए ड्रामा को लाना पड़ेगा. सनक इस मामले में बहुत पिछड़ी है.

सनक की कहानी तेज रफ्तार से चलती है और 117 मिनट में सब कुछ खत्म हो जाता है. फिल्म की समस्या यह है कि लेखक-निर्देशक ने बंधक ड्रामे के रोमांच पर कम और विद्युत के एक्शन दृश्यों पर ज्यादा फोकस किया है. अतः फिल्म में ऐसा कोई मौका नहीं आता जब दर्शक की सांसें अटक जाए. वहीं, विद्युत के इससे बेहतर ऐक्शन कमांडो सीरीज की फिल्मों में हैं. उनकी फिल्मों में नायिकाओं के लिए आम तौर पर कोई मौका नहीं रहता और यहां भी वही बात है. इंस्पेक्टर जयंती भार्गव के रूप में नेहा धूपिया निराश करती हैं. उनके किरदार का कोई ग्राफ नहीं है. अपने पहले से आखिरी दृश्य में वह जो थी, वही रहती हैं. आतंकियों के आगे असहाय पुलिस अधिकारी के रूप में भी उनके अभिनय में कोई बात नजर नहीं आती. रुक्मिणी मैत्रा को अधिक मौका नहीं मिला. पूरी कहानी में अगर कोई किरदार थोड़ी चमक छोड़ता है तो आतंकी लीडर बने चंदन सान्याल. क्रूरता उनके चेहरे से टपकती है और उनकी संवाद अदायगी भी बढ़िया है. परंतु लेखक-निर्देशक ने उन्हें विद्युत के मुकाबले खड़े करने में मेहनत नहीं की. हीरो और विलेन यहां एक-दूसरे के सामने आए बगैर बातचीत में मुकाबला कर रहे हैं लेकिन उनके बीच ऐसी कोई डायलॉगबाजी नहीं है, जो सनक में चटखारे लगाने के काम आए. विडंबना यह है कि विद्युत के मुकाबले सनक यहां चंदन में ज्यादा दिखती है. फिल्म देखते हुए आप जानते हैं कि आगे क्या होने वाला है. कैमरा वर्क जरूर अच्छा है और अस्पताल की चारदीवारी में एक्शन दृश्यों को बढ़िया रचा गया है. फिल्म का संगीत छाप नहीं छोड़ता. अगर आपके पास पर्याप्त खाली समय है और विद्युत का एक्शन आपको एंटरटेन करता है तो यह फिल्म देखें. वर्ना इस दशहरे ओटीटी पर आपके पास काफी विकल्प हैं.

So finally, Bollywood has its own ‘Die Hard’. The Los Angeles skyscraper is turned into a glitzy Mumbai hospital, Bruce Saviour-In-A-Singlet Willis is played by our own Vidyut Jammwal, the estranged wife from the Hollywood blockbuster becomes a recovering-from-an-operation spouse (Rukmini Maitra), and the hard-nosed terrorists are led by a gun-toting Chandan Roy Sanyal who gets to say those immortal words every actor can kill for: Time To Tango.

A big-ticket criminal (Karmakar) is in the hospital for a procedure, and his squad is zeroing in. Everything happens by the numbers: take-over of basement parking, check, control room with CCTVs, check, corralling the hostages, check. MMA coach Vivaan (Jammwal) is on the spot to take his wife back home. Said wife (Maitra) looks fetching throughout in a soft blow-out. In between, the leader of the gang (Roy Sanyal) strides along corridors going rat-a-tat, blowing big holes into sundry bodies, and when the plot demands it, chucking someone out of a high window. A hard-nosed cop (Dhupia) declares, ‘we are Mumbai police’, just in case we missed it. By rights, ‘Sanak’ should have been a non-stop ride. But it is more like a stroll in the park, devoid of any spark.

You wonder why it took so long to get to this rip-off, given that Hindi cinema had beaten everyone in making films in which our heroes turn into Rescuing Rambos. Remember the 1980 ‘The Burning Train’? So many decades have passed, there is so much cutting edge technology that movies can make use of, and there is Jammwal, so good at vaulting across rooms and pulping baddies. But it’s the same old problem of saggy writing which not even the most ripped muscleman can save.

Sample this line. Says Jammwal to a perky kid, right in the middle of a tense situation: ‘Are you ready to kill the bad guys?’ Says kid, ‘I was born ready, uncle’. Err, okay.

Sanak Movie Review: Vidyut Jammwal Retains The ‘Biggest Action Star’ Tag, But Loses Hold Of The Plot

Vidyut jammwal is the biggest reason to watch sanak, but cannot be the only attention-grabbing point of the feature length film..

What’s Good: Vidyut Jammwal punching baddies with lightning speed and his sheer dedication to the genre.

What’s Bad:  The makers relying too heavily on Vidyut and not polishing the world around all his action that becomes the main show.

Loo Break:  As already indicated, not when the man is in combat, otherwise, feel free to. Also, it’s on OTT, pause it.

Watch or Not?:  Not every day do we get the level of action showcased in Sanak, top of that Jammwal himself has performed it. Go in for that.

A happy couple is struck by bad days when the wife is diagnosed with a rare heart problem. A surgery cures her but destiny has different plans. A terrorist attack in the hospital leads to her been taken hostage and the husband who is a former MMA trainer has to save his lady from the bad men.

Sanak Movie Review: Script Analysis

Action genre in Hindi cinema is still a niche. You can easily count the stars who have dedicated their craft to it on fingers. Vidyut Jammwal is definitely on the top of that list, and his fans forever wait for him to get into action. Well, even the writers of Sanak do. A movie that takes Hospital as its war ground manages to have a unique base, but what about the plot? Did we forget that needs to have some unique elements too?

Ashish P Verma takes the credit as the writer of the film. The movie gets to the phase where the action begins after 22 minutes of the set-up. Now it is obvious that everything happening in those 22 minutes is a build-up to the drama we are about to witness. But if you make that time look like a countdown with no meat except the lead pairs cute chemistry, that too cut abruptly, it all looks lazy.

At this point, it looks like you survived the build-up without really grasping anything just to enjoy Vidyut flexing his muscles in the most amazing way. While the fighting sequences are what the writers depend completely upon to bring in the audience, they forget they have created a world for the one who is throwing those punches. Vidyut time and again gets anxiety attacks, why? Do they bother to tell clearly? No! Rukmini aka Anshika suddenly does a martial arts move, do we know she knew that? No! The couple together is all forms of cute, but does their back story that seems to be interesting is explored any further? No!

On top of this all, the writing equips of 10 something old kid of knowing a lot about guns. He knows how to use them. If that is unbelievable, he even knows how to defuse a bomb plant by a group of highly skilled terrorist, who had planned that attack for 4 months. So, when after all of this, the Mumbai Police leaves this operation up to a civilian, you don’t judge them much, because you have given up on logic.

Sanak Movie Review: Star Performance

Vidyut Jammwal has claimed his throne to be the biggest action star yet again. He punches at the speed of flash and kills people with bare hands. The magic is that, he makes this all look so believable. There is a charm in his smirks too, that’s another thing fans definitely come for.

Rukmini Maitra who makes her Bollywood debut is promising in the part she is given. Her chemistry with Vidyut is adorable and I wish the makers gave the audience a bit more of that.

Chandan Roy Sanyal as the antagonist enters the screen with a bang, promising a lot. But by the time passes, he resorts to eccentric traits of a crazy villain, thus making his good performance a caricature.

Neha Dhupia also suffers a similar fate. The actor enters the movie as a police officer with a strong personality. But when she decides to only stare at a CCTV screen and let a civilian carry out an operation to beat a terrorist group, you cannot suspend your disbelief to that extent.

Sanak Movie Review: Direction, Music

Kanishk Varma in his direction is focused on showcasing how phenomenal his leading man is at what he does. Nothing wrong in that, but without focusing on anything else, becomes a bit lethargic.

Action director Andy Long Nguyen though does the most amount of hardwork. Getting work with Jammwal, he designs never seen before stunts and sequences. He is also clever enough to use the surrounding to support the action. Two sequences that stand out is one in the MRI room and other in the physiotherapy ward.

Sanak Movie Review: The Last Word

Vidyut Jammwal is the biggest reason to watch Sanak, but cannot be the only attention-grabbing point of the movie. While the action is top-notch, wish the plot was equally developed too.

Sanak movie review: Vidyut Jammwal's latest is a hastily put together, Die Hard-inspired mess

Sanak over-emphasizes the action, leaving the story and the emotional core under-developed.

In the 1988 action film Die Hard , John McClane (Bruce Willis) must save his wife when her office building is taken over by a group of heavily armed terrorists.   

In 2021, in Hindi film Sanak, Vidyut Jammwal plays Vivaan Ahuja, a MMA trainer with low blood sugar. His wife Anshika (Rukmini Maitra) is recovering from treatment for Hypertrophic Cardiomyopathy (HCM), a genetic heart condition. All is well with her recovery until a group of heavily armed terrorists capture the hospital and take patients and staff hostage. Vivaan must save his wife and free the hostages.

Outside the hospital building, ACP Jayati Bhargava (Neha Dhupia) is commanding the official post. As is the format of such action films, the police wait for a civilian on the inside to do most of the dirty work before bursting in at the last minute.

Within the corridors of the under-siege building, Vivaan finds two unlikely sidekicks, one is Zubin, a child, and the other is ward boy Riyaaz (Chandan Roy). However, the portrayal of a tween “willing to kill some bad guys” and with extensive knowledge of guns and bombs is disturbing.   

Chandan Roy Sanyal plays Saju, the merciless mastermind behind the siege. He is commanding a team of supposedly highly skilled soldiers from around the world. The actors cast in those parts might be quick with their side kicks, flips, and jabs, but their acting needed a great deal more study. So the onus rests on Roy Sanyal to infuse the proceedings with energy.   

Action director Andy Long Nyugen has choreographed a collection of set pieces that pit Jammwal against the baddies. Using the location, there is innovative use of equipment found in a hospital including an MRI machine and the physiotherapy room.

Jammwal scores in the Jackie Chan-inspired fight scenes but does not quite nail the emotional moments.   

Sanak feels like a hastily put together project with a script that over-emphasizes the action, leaving the story and the emotional core under-developed.   

There is a time-bound mission, many hostages, and lots of gunfire, yet, at a crucial juncture, Vivaan has a long conversation with Riyaaz about Anshika. At the same time, Anshika is recording a cheesy voice message to her husband. There is a particular – unintentionally so – hilarious moment in the climax when Saju tosses aside the very reason he planned the mission. And why does Vivaan repeatedly consume sachets of some powder?

Writer Ashish Prakash Varma and director Kanishk Varma seem to be motivated by the John McTiernan-directed Die Hard films that spawned a franchise. Though Vivaan is an impressive one-man army, who almost single-handedly saves the day, one hopes that unlike Die Hard , Sanak (meaning madness) stops at one film only.

There is a scene in Sanak where antagonist Chandan Roy Sanyal asks his colleague, “Kya Hindi picture jaise idhar bhi police late aayegi?” giving the audience a hint that the film is loaded with clichés. Sanak headlines one of Bollywood’s biggest action stars - Vidyut Jammwal. So you know what to expect - loads of action, some daredevil stunts and one-liners written for his hardcore fans. But does Sanak live up to the expectations and make it worth your time? Let’s find out.

Sanak is a hostage drama set against the backdrop of a hospital. Vivaan (Vidyut Jammwal) is rushing to meet his ailing wife Anshika (Rukmini Maitra) who’s recovering from a life-threatening surgery. The hospital she’s admitted to becomes the centre stage for drama when a bunch of terrorists, lead by Saju Solanki (Chandan Roy Sanyal), plan to rescue a fellow criminal Ajay Pal Singh (Kiran Karmarkar) from the hospital premises. Police officer Jayati Bhargav (Neha Dhupia) leads the charge in trying to nab the bad guys and diffuse the tense situation.

While the premise has the potential to grip you it’s the silly screenplay and shoddy writing that gets in the way of making Sanak an enjoyable experience. There are several glaring loopholes that can’t be missed. In an age where the audience has seen better hostage dramas with realistic treatment (Mumbai Diaries: 26/11) Sanak feels dated and shallow. So you can’t help but point out odd things like why do the terrorists have a bunch of Asians, a black woman and white men who speak in a strange accent in a squad lead by an Indian man? Why did the writers hire Neha Dhupia and give just a few lines to mouth and look concerned about the situation? Sanak has many such moments that defy logic and leave you baffled.

The saving grace of the film is obviously the lead star Vidyut Jammwal. His honesty towards his craft is what saves Sanak from its weak moments. Given that the setting is a hospital, the action director and team have used some genius stunts that involve an MRI machine, a Swiss ball in the physio room and other such innovative ideas. Thankfully the film doesn’t have the song-and-dance routine and the focus does stay on the action when it finally kicks in. Vidyut fans get their fair share of action with the actor going all out to ensure he delivers with his signature moves.

Sanak could have been slicker, faster and tighter. As a hostage drama, it fails to live up to the genre. However, Vidyut fans are in for a treat if his action scenes and daredevil stunts are what they signed up to watch.

Sanak is the latest Hindi film which has released on OTT platform Disney Plus Hotstar on October 15, 2021. The screen time of this action drama film is around 1 hour 57 minutes. This film has been inspired by 2002 Hollywood film John Q. starring Denzel Washington.

Story: The story of this film revolves around Vidyut Jammwal aka Vivaan Ahuja who is a MMA trainer. Vivaan is happily married to Rukmini Maitra aka Anshika for three long years. One fine day, Anshika got ill and later it was revealed that she is being diagnosed with a rare disease that will soon stop her heart beat if not treated on time. For the treatment, Vivaan was needed 70 lakhs and he had only option to sell his house to seek the treatment of his wife. Now, Anshika is in the hospital for a treatment and it was being attacked by a group of criminals. Well, Vivaan has decided to face the criminals alone and save his wife at any cost. Will, Vivaan able to do that is what this story is all about.

This film also stars Neha Dhupia aka a police inspector, Chandan Roy Sanyal is a noted criminal, Amole Gupte and many others.

Bollywood Crazies Opinion: The story and screenplay of this film is quite engaging from start to end. Vidyut again left a strong impression that he is one of the best action hero we had in Hindi films. Vidyut and Rukmini soulful romance is quite evident throughout the film. This film has right amount of emotions and actions which goes hand in hand. You will blown away by the action of this film and the way they have been executed. We have seen such films in the past but this is a special treatment given by the director to its plot story. If you are an action lover fans and want to witness some high octane action which matches to the Hollywood level, than this is a perfect film for you. The actions performed by Vidyut and the whole team are new and raw. The background music adds meaning to the whole story and the action scenes. My favorite dialogue, ‘Hum Ne Tumko Mugambo Samjha Tha Par Tum To Rambo Nikle.’

Sanak movie has been directed by Kanishk Varma and and written by Ashish Prakash Verma. This movie have been produced by Vipul Amrutlal Shah and Aashin A. Shah. The cinematography has been done by Pratik Deora and editing work handled by Sanjay Sharma. The musical score has been given by Saurabh Bhalerao.

Sanak movie budget hasn’t been revealed by the makers but it could reportedly be around 7 to 8 crores maximum.

Altogether, Sanak is a well written film and surely a one time watch for action lovers.

Last Word: Watch it for Vidyut Jammwal extraordinary action.

Vivan Ahuja and Anshika have been happily married for three years, and they are celebrating their anniversary. While enjoying their anniversary, little do they know that they will be trapped soon. Anshika and many other people are trapped as hostages in a hospital. Vivan had to save his wife and the people from the kidnappers. What is the motive behind the kidnap? Was he able to rescue everyone? The rest of the film deals with it.

Star Performance

Vidyut has ample opportunities to show off his chiseled body. He utilized the opportunity and did his part well. Chandan Roy Sanyal plays the baddie, and he is impressive in his negative performance. Neha Dhupia plays an inspector. Neither Neha nor Rukmini got a solid role to do.

In a few minutes, the basic plot is exposed. When we are expecting some twists and turns, we are disappointed with the screenplay. The bomb-diffusing scene makes the audience laugh. Is that acceptable? While watching the serious scenes, we expect the strict and sincere officer to make a neat twist and bring some exciting turns to the story. But that never happened. Except for a stylish entry, Neha didn’t have anything significant to do in this film. All the major works are by the hero and the villain. The songs are not impressive, but the BGM is quite decent. The cinematography is good.

• Logical loopholes should have been avoided

The film has nothing new, even the suspense element. But, with well-made action sequences, the makers impressed the action movie lovers. If you are one such, you might also like this film. Sanak – Only for action lovers and Vidyut fans!
