The Rice Coffeehouse, Valhalla Pub and Willy’s Pub are all student-run institutions offering on-campus food and drink. Before stepping foot on campus, all students are assigned to one of 11 residential colleges, of which they remain members even if they decide to move off campus. The residential colleges provide housing, dining, and academic and social events. The Rice Owls boast 14 varsity NCAA Division I athletic teams and are well known for their strong baseball program. Students receive free tickets to all varsity athletic events.
Rice is comprised of eight schools, including the School of Social Sciences, School of Humanities and Wiess School of Natural Sciences. Its graduate schools include the highly ranked Jesse H. What if your next four years exceeded all expectations? Rice University sits in the heart of Houston on a 300-acre, tree-lined campus next to the Texas Medical Center and the Houston Museum District. As a top-tier research institution, we offer more than 50 majors across seven schools of study where students have the freedom and ability to choose their own path. From your first semester on campus, no matter your major, you'll have the opportunity to conduct research alongside experts. You'll be able to apply your skills, gain valuable professional experience and interact with industry leaders as you address real-world issues. Bright, curious and diverse, our students have a thirst for knowledge and a desire to shape the world around them.
Our student life begins with our residential colleges, where we randomly sort new students and where they stay throughout their time at Rice. Because each student is randomly assigned and stays in the same college throughout their undergraduate years, the diversity of our student body creates a rich tapestry of traditions, culture, and, most importantly, community. And by focusing on a culture of care, students find support from their peers resulting in an environment of collaboration over competition.
And at Rice, we believe that talent deserves opportunity, which is why with generous financial aid policies, more students have access to the aid they need. We strive to ensure that everyone has the opportunity to pursue a Rice education, starting with The Rice Investment, our signature financial aid program. The Rice Investment is an investment in the promise of all students who demonstrate talent, initiative and drive to positively impact the world. Rice is one of a select number of institutions that admits students based on academic merit rather than ability to pay. Rice also meets 100 percent of demonstrated need for admitted students through financial aid, regardless of whether they qualify for The Rice Investment.
This combination of excellence in academics, a vibrant and caring student life and our commitment to access and affordability forms the heart of Rice University.

Top-notch for almost anything one can name, and most certain to make one's careers and future bright. It is the underdog and for me, an IVY PLUS! The campus, the life, the pre-arrival guidance, everything speaks for itself and is a marvel of its own. Let's go OWLS!!

Rice’s CBE evaluation and selection process yields a strong class each year. We seek students who demonstrate academic prowess and show strong promise of leadership and interest in bettering their communities. The application has many areas of evaluation, and we are careful not to weigh any one section over the rest in our contextual review.
Still, we recognize some find comfort in knowing the profile of a student accepted to Rice. Below are the statistics for the class of 2027.

PhD Program
The Department of Computer Science offers a Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) in Computer Science. Ph.D. students work closely with one or more faculty members who serve as research directors and mentors.
The Ph.D. degree is intended for students planning to pursue a career in computer science research and education. The doctoral program normally requires four to six years of study. Ph.D. students must spend at least four semesters in full-time study at Rice, where full-time study is defined as enrollment in nine or more hours of coursework. The Ph.D. degree requires a combination of coursework and original research, as evidenced in a written thesis and a public oral defense of that thesis.
Our multi-disciplinary research activities often go beyond engineering, as we begin to observe a major X+CS worldwide movement in which innovations in any discipline X occur at the boundary between X and Computer Science.
