Remote Proofreading Jobs and 26 Places to Find Them

With working from home becoming more common than ever before, remote proofreading jobs are gaining a lot of traction. Amongst the online jobs you can do, checking grammatical and spelling mistakes sounds like one of the easiest ones to pick up. But what exactly  does this kind of work entail, how much would it earn, and most importantly, how do you search for legitimate as well as rewarding proofreader jobs? These are all valid questions, the answers to which you can find right here.

What is proofreading?

To proofread is to go over a document’s final draft with a fine-tooth comb, searching for grammatical, spelling, punctuation, and formatting errors. Unlike the job of a copy editor, you don't have to concern yourself with language style or voice. It may seem simple, but it requires a thorough understanding of not just the English language but also the appropriate manuscript formatting styles.

Web content, academic papers, and many other types of writing — To proofread and correct each of these kinds of content requires a thorough understanding of its preferred language and formats.

Because of their project-by-project nature, it is common for the gigs you get in this sector to be online, freelance proofreading jobs.

Becoming a proofreader and securing remote jobs

Luckily, you don’t have to go through intensive training or education to become a proofreader. Preferably, you'd have a bachelor's degree in English, Journalism, or a field relevant to the kind of content your hope of proofread. (To proofread for a medical company, you'd need background in medicine, for example.) Other than that, a certificate of completion for a proofreading course can make your profile much more appealing to potential clients. To get started on the right foot, consider:

🎓 Taking a training course via societies such as the  Editorial Freelancers Association ;

📝 Brushing up on style guides (APA, Chicago, and AP Styles);

💻 Creating a profile and following relevant groups/hashtags (this may include creating your own website, a LinkedIn, or a professional Twitter account);

✅ Being flexible about the kind of job you take on (work from different industries, projects involving copy editing ).

You can get more tips in our comprehensive guide on how to become a proofreader . If you’re all clear about the set up, let’s discover all the places that you can find remote jobs for proofreaders.

Extra Proofreading Opportunities

Start a proofreading business.

There are more ways to find beginner proofreading jobs online than applying to work for big companies.

You can set up your own proofreading business and keep 100% of all your profits. Of course, to get noticed, you will have to direct some of these profits back into your business for advertising, website fees and social media.

But, once you get a few clients, you can ask for reviews and use these as social proof. Display these reviews on your proofreading website and on your social media pages.

Send Out Cold Emails

Another great way to find proofreading clients is to send out cold emails. If you see a company you’d like to work for, search out their website and social media profiles.

They may have details on how to contact them about work. If not, this doesn’t mean you can’t contact them, before they know they even need your help!

Write a customized email, detailing how you can help them and why you think you’d be a good fit for their brand.

Do your research and make sure to comment something nice about what they do. Some big companies get hundreds of pitches each week and you need to make yours stand out.

Check out these cold pitching tips for a little extra guidance.

How Can I Market Myself as a Proofreader?

To have a successful proofreading career, you must learn how to market yourself. This is especially important if you don’t have years of experience under your belt.

Potential clients will check you out, so you need to have a great online presence to make a good impression. To market yourself, you must:

Have a Proofreading Website

Setting up a proofreader website allows you to showcase your skills and shows you are a professional.

Customers are more likely to trust you know what you’re doing, if they can see you have your own website.

It’s also a way to easily tell people a bit about yourself and your prices and any other information.

Recommended pages to include on your proofreading website are:

  • About.  Give a little information about yourself, your experience and why someone should choose you over the rest. Include any qualifications if you have.
  • Services.  Detail what types of proofreading services you offer and any niche specialities.
  • Samples.  As you complete work, add links here to show what you can do.
  • Rates.  Write a little about your pricing structure and any discounts for big orders.
  • Contact.  Include contact information and social media handles here.
  • Blog.  To help your website get found in ‘proofreading’ searches and to show your expertise, you can write articles here.

Set Up Professional Social Media Profiles

Set up social media accounts specifically for your new proofreading business. Detail what you offer and how you can help a business.

Two of the best for proofreaders are LinkedIn and Facebook. All the big brands and companies in the world will be on these platforms and will likely need the help of a proofreader.

Update your social accounts regularly, with content showing your expertise in the industry.

Share other big accounts content and network with other proofreaders and businesses you’d like to work with in the future.

A few ideas for social posts when starting out as a proofreader include:

  • Links to your proofreader website blog posts
  • Content educating followers on grammar and punctuation

However, the key to succeeding in any new career is perseverance.

It took me 3 months to get my first freelance writing client and I was sending at least 50 cold emails a day.

Join Proofreading Associations

Proofreading associations are a place to network and find support on your proofreading journey.

Most countries will have their own association and many accept international members. Below I will detail and few of the biggest ones:

United Kingdom

  • Chartered Institute of Editing and Proofreading
  • Institute of Professional Editors (IPED)

What Are the Pros and Cons of Working as a Proofreader?

There are many benefits to working as a proofreader. However, you also need to be aware of the challenges that may come your way.

  • Low start-up costs.  A laptop, internet and excellent English grammar skills are the basics need to start proofreading. Take this FREE proofreading course to give yourself a head start.
  • Work remotely.  Work at home, in a coffee shop or while travelling in another country – it’s up to you.
  • Little barrier to entry.  While proofreading experience and a degree is a plus, it’s not necessary. Many companies hire beginner proofreaders and train them up to their particular style guide requirements.
  • Flexible work hours.  While you will have deadlines, you can choose to get the work done morning or evening time.
  • Need working knowledge of multiple style guides.  It helps if you take the time to familiarize yourself with style guides relating to the content you wish to proofread.
  • May be asked for quick turnaround times.  Clients will often need a quick turnaround and you’ll be expected to provide.
  • Can take time to build a steady client base.  As a new proofreader, it will be hard, in the beginning, to convince clients you’re right for the job.

Hi! Great Blog!! Informative, educational and a great resource. Thank you for sharing, continued success and many blessings. Mia, Retired Bilingual (Spanish), soon to be trilingual, (Italian) BA American and English Literature looking for remote work to supplement income.

Sunday 2nd of January 2022

I see most of the remote hirers require a degree or higher to even have a foot in the door. But I am doing proofreading for a beauty SME without it. Coming from a non-native English speaking country, it's a challenge to earn a decent regular income without the paper qualifications.

But, I like to thank you for your detailed written sharing which I usually read with a tinge of sigh.

11 Highest-Paying Jobs That Require Zero Experience

High-paying entry-level jobs.

A ccording to a study by The Interview Guys, there are many high-paying jobs available that require zero experience. From nurse practitioners earning a median salary over $110,000 and pharmacists pulling in a median income of $123,000 to math and English teachers, each earning approximately $80,000 annually, there's a great new job waiting for you whether you're just getting started in the job market or looking to make a career switch.  You don't need a college degree to be a police officer or to land one of these great jobs , either.

There's always been a market for stories but never before has the access to both tell and monetize our own stories been so readily available. And there's zero experience required for this potentially high-paying job. Kate Sorensen, the successful blogger behind the sites CouponCravings.com and MomsCravings.com, says she makes over $100,000 a year as an at-home, working mom.

Transcriptionist

"We have some transcriptionists that make over $50,000 a year that had no experience before they started with us," says Ben Walker, CEO of Transcription Outsourcing, LLC. Of course, as with most jobs, you'll need to learn the skill and it takes time to reach that annual salary but many transcriptionists got there in just about a year.

"One job that can pay very well with no experience is recruitment," notes Taylor, who worked in IT recruitment before becoming a freelance consultant and founder of homeworkingclub.com . "The reason it's sometimes possible to get into this work without experience is that it requires strong sales skills, resilience, and a thick skin—a combination that can be hard to find, and is sometimes more about natural attributes than experience." Being a recruiter often means a commission-based wage with a small salary, but it is possible to turn zero recruitment experience into a high-paying job. These 14 careers could make you a millionaire before you retire .

Remote location dishwasher

Unlike a traditional kitchen, where chefs earn the big bucks, a remote location dishwasher is a high-paying job with no experience needed. "On offshore oil-rigs or remote camps for example, a dishwasher can earn $80,000 or more each year plus benefits," says Michael Alexis, CEO at Team Building Hero. If you're willing to head off to a remote location, there's a lot of money to be made without having technical knowledge or specific industry experience. Looking to switch careers later in life? Here are some cool jobs you could have in the future .

According to Power Home Remodeling, the nation's largest full-service exterior home remodeling company with $700 million in annual revenue, "It is not atypical for first-year sales employees to earn between $100,000 and $185,000 for meeting their annual—and very attainable—goals." The company goes on to state that not only is experience not required for this high-paying entry-level sales job, but a college degree also is not a prerequisite.

Real estate investor and agent

"One of the best-paying jobs that require no previous experience is investing in real estate," per Daniela Andreevska, the marketing director at Mashvisor, a real estate data analytics company. "You can easily start investing in rental properties or other types of real estate after doing some reading and research online and using your common sense," Andreevska says. This is a very intuitive job that could be high-paying and requires zero experience to get started. Roger Maftean, a Career Expert and Content Strategist at Resumelab, shares, "To become a real estate agent you need to have an impeccable appearance and be equipped with the right skills set, including patience, perseverance, and interpersonal skills," but zero experience is required for this high-paying job. Maftean goes on to point out that a successful real estate agent will be, "passionate about working with people, understand their needs, and match these with the right solutions, and knowing basic math and negotiation tactics would come in handy too." It's never too late to start a second career.

Police officer

There is no experience required to be a police officer and because the average starting salary of a police officer is $57,794, according to Ethan Lichtenberg of USInsuranceAgents, it's a solid high-paying job many adults can perform. Lichtenberg says that the need to go through police school is a possible downside for some, but the salary may be worth a little extra education to get a high-paying job.

"Freelance translation was one of the first legitimate online jobs on the market, and to this day the translation industry continues to grow as the world becomes more globalized," according to Darko Jacimovic, co-founder of What To Become. "Anyone who has functional knowledge of two languages can do it. If you have good language skills, you can make a lot of money with translation without any working experience." Find out the 10 best careers to pursue right now.

Online proofreading

You may not have any professional proofreading experience on your resume, but per Martin Luenendonk, co-founder and CEO of Cleverism, if you, "have learned writing structures from the online course like Coursera or Udemy, etc, then you can earn well from providing your proofreading services online." The Cleverest CEO continues, "In proofreading, you don't need to rewrite or create content for someone's book, but you need to give it a last conclusive read to remove an anomaly in text. Ideally, an online proofreader can earn $44,954 to $58,595 annually." Being a freelance online proofreader is just one of many jobs where you can be your own boss.

Air traffic controller

It may come as an uneasy surprise, but, "It's not extensive work experience that matters in becoming an air traffic controller," per Roger Maftean. "From a formal point of view, you need to be under 30 and pass a few examinations, including medical tests, and to make it as an air traffic controller, you must be endowed with unique skills and predispositions, including spatial vision, outstanding stress resistance, ability to work in a team, and quick decision-making." If you qualify, even with zero experience you could land one of the highest-paying jobs out there, with a median annual wage of around $120,000. Read on to learn about the most unusual high-paying jobs.

Engels, Saratov Oblast, Russia

When the Volga German colonies were founded, Engels was known as Pokrovsk. It was a commercial center located on the left bank of the Volga River across from Saratov.

Pokrovsk was founded in 1747 by ethnic Ukranians, and it is referred to as the Pokrovsk Ukranian Quarter in the 1798 Census of the Volga German colonies.

Over the years, Pokrovsk became the center of much of the German culture on the Volga and was known by the German name of Kasakenstadt. It had a population of 22,000 in 1897.

In 1924, Pokrovsk became the capital of the Volga German Autonomous Soviet Socialist Republic and in 1931 was renamed in honor of Friedrich Engels. It is still called Engels today.

In 1965, a bridge was constructed across the Volga River to connect Engels to Saratov.

Russian border region reels from sustained Ukrainian artillery and drone strikes

A Russian border region being pounded by Ukrainian shelling and drones is expanding its closure of schools and colleges amid a major evacuation plan, authorities announced Wednesday, as Kyiv’s forces extend their campaign of long-range strikes that aim to put the Kremlin under pressure.

Ukraine lacks ammunition supplies along the 620-mile front line because of a shortfall in promised Western supplies, which is one of the main factors forcing its army to take a more defensive stance. But at the same time, it’s attacking oil facilities deep inside Russia and seeking to unnerve Russia’s border regions.

Some Belgorod schools near the border will close early before school holidays, regional Gov. Vyacheslav Gladkov announced, after Ukraine shelling continued to cause deaths and injuries among the local population.

Schools in and around the city of Belgorod will close Wednesday through Friday, he said. Also, universities and colleges will switch to remote learning, and clubs and cultural, sports and other educational institutions will stay closed.

Ukrainian drone strikes hit targets deep inside Russia, officials say

Russian officials say Ukrainian long-range drones have smashed into two oil facilities deep inside Russia.

March 12, 2024

The measures were announced a day after the governor unveiled plans to evacuate about 9,000 children from the region and several days after a rubber-stamp presidential election in Russia in which President Vladimir Putin extended his rule in a landslide.

Despite the attacks, the official voting turnout in the Belgorod region was 87%, and Putin officially captured 90.66% of the vote, which has been described as a sham by Ukraine and its Western allies.

Ukraine’s attacks on Russian soil have embarrassed the Kremlin. A Dec. 30 artillery strike on the center of Belgorod city killed 21 people, including three children, local officials said.

Putin vowed Wednesday to provide support for Belgorod civilians who have lost their homes and businesses.

“There is a lot to do and we will do everything which depends on us,” he said at a televised meeting at the Kremlin. “Of course, the primary task is to ensure safety. There are different ways to do this. They are not easy, but we will do it.”

Ukrainian drone attack on oil depot inside Russia causes massive blaze, officials say

A Ukrainian drone struck an oil depot in western Russia, causing a massive blaze as Kyiv’s forces apparently extended their attacks on Russian soil.

Jan. 19, 2024

Russia’s Defense Ministry said that it intercepted 13 Ukrainian rockets over the Belgorod region around midmorning Wednesday. Gladkov, the governor, said that three people were killed and two others were wounded, including a 17-year-old girl, in “massive shelling” of Belgorod city, the regional capital. He said that 16 people have been killed over the past week alone.

In another possible sign of Kyiv’s strategy, Ukrainian drones targeted the city of Engels, about 500 miles east of the border with Ukraine in the Saratov region. An air base for strategic bombers is near the city.

Russia’s Defense Ministry said that it took down four drones over the Saratov region.

Long-range strikes on Russia are “a cost-effective way to create challenges for the Russian state,” said Michael Kofman, a military expert with the Carnegie Endowment for International Peace.

Ukraine launches more drones and missiles at Russian areas as part of its new strategy

Russia says its defenses downed dozens of drones over Crimea and southern Russia as Ukraine pressed its strategy of taking the war beyond its borders.

Jan. 5, 2024

Without more Western help, however, “Russian advantages will mount,” Kofman wrote on X, formerly Twitter, late Tuesday. “The risk of a Russian breakthrough [on the front line] in the second half of the year rises dramatically” unless support arrives, he said.

The European Union is moving ahead with a plan to use the profits generated from billions of euros of Russian assets frozen in Europe to help provide weapons and other funds for Ukraine. EU leaders are expected to endorse the plan at a summit in Brussels starting Thursday.

But the United States is Ukraine’s crucial military supplier, and U.S. Congress remains stalled over funding to send additional weapons to the front.

The U.S. has repeatedly pledged to stand by Ukraine “for as long as it takes,” but Washington’s failure to do so leaves Ukraine at the mercy of Russia’s much bigger and better provisioned army, analysts say.

Meanwhile, the Czech government has pressed ahead with a plan to source from around the world large amounts of artillery shells, which Ukraine desperately needs. Officials say they have confirmed purchases for 300,000 shells and promises for another 200,000.

The Czech government’s national security advisor, Tomas Pojar, said that Ukraine should get the first of those shells in June at the latest.

In other developments, four people were killed and five others were wounded in a Russian attack on Kharkiv city in northeastern Ukraine, according to Mayor Ihor Terekhov. Rescuers were searching for people under the rubble amid a huge blaze.

Also, a 74-year-old school worker in northeastern Ukraine’s Sumy region was killed in a Russian airstrike on Tuesday, the Prosecutor General’s Office said. Russian troops destroyed a school and house in a border village.

Burrows writes for the Associated Press.
