Metropolitan Church Chania Crete - allincrete.com

Presentation of the Virgin Mary or as it is most commonly known as Trimartiri (three-aisled) or Metropolitan Cathedral of Chania is located close to the Old Venetian Harbour in the Old Town of Chania.

The cathedral was build in the ruins of an older church from the 14th century. The first cathedral was smaller as it was also referred to as “Dimartiri” (two-aisled) and during the Ottoman occupation of Chania in 1645 it was turned into a soap factory.

In 1856, as the Agioi Anargyroi church was not large enough for all the Christians of the area, people requested from the Sultan to rebuild the soap factory. The Sultan agreed and the new cathedral was built with donations both from the Sultan and the people of Chania and completed in 1864.

Nowadays, the cathedral serves as the Metropolitan Cathedral of Chania and often hosts special occasions, so if you are lucky you might see a traditional Cretan wedding taking place!

The iconic Church of Panagia Kapnikarea (also known as the Holy Church of the Presentation of the Virgin Mary) stands in the middle of Ermou street in Syntagma and has been adorning the pedestrianized shopping street with its grandeur for 11 centuries.

Even though it is one of the oldest Greek churches and a masterpiece of Byzantine architecture, it is unfortunately often overlooked by passersby.

Read on to learn about the story of Kapnikarea Church, it’s opening hours, how to get there, and why it’s totally worth a place on your to-do list.

The history of the Church of Panagia Kapnikarea

Built on the ruins of an ancient temple that is dedicated to Athena or Demeter, the historic church dates to the 11th century. Its name derives either from “kapnikon”, which was a Byzantine tax, or from “Kapnikares”, the tax collector responsible for the church.

However, since the Greek word “kapnismeni” translates to smoked, it is also said that the name of the church may refer to the fire marks on the building.

presentation of the virgin mary metropolitan church

Due to its outstanding architecture and its historical significance, Kapnikarea is considered one of the most important churches in Athens. It is formed by a complex of three units and features a dome supported by four Roman columns.

The main church on the southern side is dedicated to Virgin Mary, and it is said that it has been the katholikon of a monastery. The colonnaded porch you’ll see on this side dates to the 12th century. The chapel in the northern part is dedicated to Agia Varvara while an exonarthex was added on the western side when the church came under the property of the University of Athens.

The outdoor area of the church adorns a magnificent mosaic that portrays Virgin Mary holding Jesus Christ, which was created by Elli Voila in 1936.

The church’s interior is decorated with paintings by Fotis Kontoglou and his pupils of a hagiography school with strong influences by the Byzantine tradition.

The artist painted Theotokos Platytera at the arch of the church in 1942 and completed the church’s decoration in 1955. The paintings that decorate the walls of the vaulted narthex and the exo-narthex date to 1900; to this day, the artist remains unknown.

Kapnikarea bears witness to the city’s history as it has been part of it for many centuries. It has survived several turbulence, such as the Greek War of Independence and the menacing plans of the Bavarian architect Leon von Klenze, who wanted to demolish it. Luckily, the King of Bavaria and Neofytos Metaxas, Bishop of Talantio, and Metropolitan of Athens disagreed with Klenze’s plans, and their intervention saved the historical monument.

Opening hours of Panagia Kapnikarea Church

The church is usually open during the week from morning until the afternoon, but the hours often change depending on the season. Panagia Kapnikarea Church is also normally open on Sundays and on Greek Christian celebrations, holding services that you can attend. Bear in mind that the opening hours of the church may change throughout the year.

The Cathedral of the Virgin Mary (Panagia Trimartiri)

Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

The Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary in the Temple recalls – according to the apocryphal gospels, the day on which Mary, while still a child, was brought to the temple in Jerusalem to be offered to God. The Church wants to emphasize not so much the historical event in itself, of which there is no trace in the Gospels, but the total gift that Mary made of herself, by listening: “ Blessed are those who hear the Word of God and observe it” (Lk. 11:28). This experience prepared the young girl from Nazareth to become the “temple of the Son of God”.

The celebration of this feast dates back to the 6 th century in the East with the dedication of the Basilica of Saint Mary the New built by the Emperor Justinian I near the ruins of the temple in Jerusalem. There is evidence that various monasteries in Italy celebrated the feast in the 9 th century. It was not until the 15 th century that it was included in the Roman Missal.

This is also the on which the Church celebrates the World Day of Cloistered Life, established by Pope Pius XII in 1953.

While he was still speaking to the people, behold, his mother and his brothers stood outside, asking to speak to him. But he replied to the man who told him, “Who is my mother, and who are my brothers?” And stretching out his hand toward his disciples, he said, “Here are my mother and my brothers! For whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother”. (Mt. 12:46-50)

Bonds of love, not of blood

For the Memorial of the Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary, the liturgy proposes the passage from Matthew that speaks about how we are “related” to Jesus. It is a relationship not formed by blood, but by imitation: “ Whoever does the will of my Father in heaven is my brother, and sister, and mother”. To become a member of “His family”, one must do so not by blood or belonging to a particular religion. Rather, it is a free and personal choice that translates into a commitment to do the will of the Father.

Mary, the first disciple

Confirming what has just been said, Jesus Himself said this in responding thus to a woman who was praising His Mother: “ ‘ Blessed is the womb that carried you and the breasts at which you nursed.’ He replied, ‘Rather, blessed are those who hear the word of God and observe it.’ ” Mary is the woman who knows how to listen, who knows how to contemplate, who knows how to refer everything to her Son – “ Do whatever He tells you” (Jn. 2:5). Mary is the One who never abandoned her Son Jesus, not even along the way of the Cross. She “stood” under the Cross. She is a disciple who never abandons the Lord Jesus, who always “stands behind” Him.

Mary, model for Christians

All of this can help us imitate the Virgin Mary. Every Christian is called to look at Mary so as to learn from her, to entrust themselves to her intercession and to guard the “purity of the faith” against any idols that surround us.

Remember, O most gracious Virgin Mary, that never was it known that anyone who fled to thy protection, implored thy help, or sought thy intercession, was left unaided. Inspired by this confidence I fly unto thee, O Virgin of virgins, my Mother. To thee do I come, before thee I stand, sinful and sorrowful. O Mother of the Word Incarnate, despise not my petitions, but in thy mercy hear and answer me. Amen.

The original 14th-century main building of the church was constructed on top of the ruins of an older chapel, possibly dating to the 11th century. In 1645, when the Ottoman Occupation period began, it was converted into a soap factory, though its bell tower and the icon of the Virgin Mary remained unharmed.

After the 1856 Ottoman Reform Edict, which granted freedom of religious beliefs, the local Christian community asked for permission to build a new temple on the site of the older Venetian church. Permission was granted and the construction was funded by the sultan, as well as by Mustafa Pasha and his son. According to a local legend, Mustafa Pasha had an apparition of the Virgin Mary, who commanded him to discontinue the use of the temple as a soap factory to save his son.

Reconstruction works were completed in 1860, while the church was officially established in 1861 by the Bishop of Kydonia. It is a three-aisled basilica with Venetian architectural elements, such as curved columns, cornices and curved openings. The middle aisle is higher and topped by a pointed arch, while the other aisles are covered by cross-ribbed vaults. The belfry can be found on the northeast side. The north aisle (the former Dominican church of Saint Nicholas that had been transformed into a mosque) and the south aisle of the cathedral are dedicated to Saint Nicholas and the Cappadocian Fathers respectively. It boasts many impressive icons and frescoes crafted in the 19th century.

Parts of the church were damaged during the Cretan Revolt of 1897 and reconstructed with funding provided by the Russian Czar. Severe damages, which have also been restored, were incurred by bombings during the Second World War as well.

The church celebrates annually on November 21st.

Eisodia Theotokou (Presentation of the Virgin Mary) (Rethymno)

The metropolitan church of Rethymno is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary. The church was erected over three periods.

During the era of Venetian rule, there was a small church at this site; in 1844, it was demolished and a larger one was erected at its location. Its present-day form is a three-aisled basilica without a dome. The church features a unique wood-carved chancel screen dating back to 1852 and portable icons, the most remarkable of which is the rare icon of Panagia tou Pathous (Virgin Mary of the Passion).

presentation of the virgin mary metropolitan church

The Metropolitan Cathedral of the Great Holy Virgin (Megali Panagia ) in Rethymnon is dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary (feast 21st November) and is called great to distinguish it from Little Virgin Mary (Mikri Panagia) . The original building was a three-aisled basilica with the middle aisle dedicated to the Presentation of the Virgin Mary and the other two to the Three Hierarchs and the Holy Apostles . This church was founded in 1844 and was completed in 1856, under the guidance of the bishop Kallinikos Nikoletakis .

The church was bombed during the Second World War, so the demolition of the temple was necessary. On the same site the new temple we see today was built, following the plans of Panagia at Tinos , preserving the same internal form with the iconostasis of 1852 carved by Dimitrios Ragouzis.

The church also houses important icons, most notably the Virgin of the Passion (15th century), as well as other sacred vessels. The bell tower with the clock of 1899 rises, while the first bell is kept at the adjacent Rethymnon Church Museum .

The Presentation of the Blessed Virgin Mary

Saints Stories for All Ages

When Mary was asked to be the mother of the Savior, she was completely free to accept or reject the offer. Her response, “Let it be done to me,” was a great act of faith. Because she did not understand what was happening, she must have known that there would be difficulties ahead.

She replied yes to the angel's announcement and agreed to become the mother of Jesus, and the Church has declared Mary to be the Mother of God. Because she was the first to say yes to the Messiah, the Church has declared her to be the Mother of the Church.

presentation of the virgin mary metropolitan church

The feast of the presentation of Mary dates back to the 6th century in the East and the 15th century in the West. It is based on an ancient tradition that says Mary was taken to the temple in Jerusalem when she was 3-years-old and dedicated to God. What we celebrate on this day is the fact that God chose to dwell in Mary in a very special way. In response, Mary placed her whole self at the service of God. Every moment since your Baptism, God invites you to be open to his grace and dedicate yourself to him, as Mary did.

Detroit Archdiocese opens long-anticipated grotto with Virgin Mary statue on Mother's Day

presentation of the virgin mary metropolitan church

Detroit — Catholics celebrated the mother of all mothers on Sunday afternoon by florally crowning a statue of the Virgin Mary.

At the Cathedral of the Most Blessed Sacrament in Detroit, Archdiocese Archbishop Allen Vigneron and the Rev. J.J. Mech opened the Cathedral Marian Grotto on Mother's Day after the service concluded, taking parishioners outside to pray and place flowers in a vase in front of Mary's statue.

"When we crown an image of Mary, it's a way for us Catholics to reaffirm that we understand that she's not only the mother of Jesus, the mother of God, but from the cross, he gave her to be our mother and we rejoice in that for protection. She prays for us," Vigneron said.

Vigneron said the grotto's construction at the church, 9844 Woodward Ave was visualized during the COVID-19 pandemic and that it would serve as a reminder of the "loving care that Our Lady has for all of us in good times and in bad for generations to come."

"I made a promise that if possible, because I was placing the whole archdiocese ... under the protection of Our Lady, that I would do my best to see to the construction of this grotto as a way to mark her protection during those very difficult times," Vigneron said.

In early 2021, the archdiocese reached out to the Catholic Foundation to create the Cathedral Grotto Fund, according to the Catholic Foundation of Michigan's site. The goal was to create a grotto that would serve as a "welcoming devotional and gathering space for all," and a "shallow entry point" for the neighborhood, residents, and visitors, the site says.

Amy Ambrose of Detroit watched the crowning of Virgin Mary on Sunday with her son and called the grotto "absolutely beautiful."

"Mothers are very strong. ... We don't pray to Mary, we pray for her intercession. We worship our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ," she said.

Ambrose added that the exterior addition promotes the church and its leaders like Vigneron and Mech.

Stacia English of Detroit, a mother who was baptized at the church 60 years ago, was one of the first people to place flowers on the grotto, praising the Virgin Mary.

"This was just a glorious day, English said. "It's just beautiful."
