How to Write an Aviation Cover Letter

It probably won’t apply to all jobs in the industry, but it’s a good way to distinguish yourself from the pack..

So far in this series, we have covered how to write an aviation resume and how to apply for a pilot job online . There is a third career media skill that is important to know, though it won’t apply to all positions, and that is how to write a cover letter. 

The cover letter may seem like a bit of an anachronism, and in some ways it is. Few large airlines ask for one anymore; you may have noticed that the AirlineApps base application doesn’t even allow you to attach a cover letter (or a resume, for that matter). At large airlines doing a great deal of hiring, the process is quite data-driven, and the computer that spits out your name to be interviewed by a human will have zero appreciation of a well-crafted cover letter. Still, even at these companies you will bring your resume to the interview, and this should be accompanied by a cover letter—even if it seems destined to languish, unread, in the interviewer’s file folder. 

The cover letter assumes much greater importance for corporate jobs, at smaller companies, whenever mailing or emailing your resume unbidden, when pounding the street and “cold-calling” potential employers, and when meeting recruiters at job fairs. Your cover letter accompanies and enhances your resume by fleshing out a potential employer’s idea of you. It’s more important in the early stages of your career, when your credentials alone aren’t so impressive. By presenting a neat, well-organized, well-written cover letter, you are introducing yourself as a neat, well-organized, and intelligent candidate—a future employee more valuable than your certificates and hours alone might indicate. 

Not a Writer?

The challenge here is that there are plenty of people who are neat, well-organized, and intelligent who are not naturally good writers. If this describes you, I highly suggest that you enlist the help of more literate friends or family members, even to the point of having someone ghost write your basic cover letter. If you don’t know such a person, hire one online (starving writers are a dime a dozen), and get them to proof your resume while you’re at it. Readability is everything; an overly wordy, confusing, or typo-riddled cover letter will quickly be cast aside. 

What Goes in a Cover Letter?

Your cover letter should take the form of a one-page business letter; an example is above with a key for reference. The letter need not be long, and in many cases might fill half the page. It should be left-justified in block format, with a single space between most elements before the signature block. It should be semi-formal in tone, use active voice, and be personalized for each job that you are interested in. Most will be similar enough that it’s useful to create a baseline stock copy, and then modify as needed. 

The first element is your home or permanent address, without your name or title (1). After a single space, put today’s date, in written rather than digital format (2). Next, write the name and address of the company you are targeting (3). Ideally you will know the name and title of the person who does the hiring, and this should precede the address. Do some digging if necessary; this will demonstrate knowledge of the target company. 

The salutation (4) should be personalized if you know the recipient’s name, and should take the form of “Dear Ms. Lastname,” “Dear Mr. Lastname,” or “Dear Firstname Lastname.” If you don’t know the recipient’s name, the salutation should be gender-neutral. “To Whom It May Concern:” is rather impersonal; “Dear Sir or Madam,” or “Dear Sir/Madam,” is better. 

The body of the letter should be three or four paragraphs. In the first paragraph (5), state your purpose for writing, i.e. your interest in the job. This is a good place to demonstrate knowledge of the company, to appropriate their buzzwords or slogans, and to drop the names of any internal recommendations. This is a place for active verbs and vivid adjectives. You are capturing the reader’s interest. 

In the middle paragraph or paragraphs (6), you are summarizing your background and experience as it relates to this particular job. You don’t want this to just be a redundant reiteration of your resumé; you want to better flesh out who you are, why you want the job, and why you’d be the ideal candidate, making your case in ways that you canno t within the rigid confines of a resumé. It’s OK to get a little personal here, sharing the influences that made you who you are, and explaining (in a positive manner) why you’re ready to move on to this job (7). This is a good spot to humblebrag how you’ve been a positive force at your current and previous employers (8), and to bring up subtle factors that set you apart from the competition (9). 

The closing paragraph (10) is the place to make your call to action. You’re asking for an interview here; don’t be shy about it. Make reference to enclosures, include your contact information, and close on a gracious note. 

The signature block (11) should include a valediction (“Sincerely,” is a safe bet; “Sincerely yours,” “Respectfully yours,” or “Cordially,” are also good options), and then four spaces, followed by your name, formatted as it appears on the header of your resume. Within the four spaces you can insert a graphic of your signature, or leave blank to be physically signed if printed on paper, or just leave blank altogether. After your name and an additional space, type the word “Enclosures:” and the number of physical or email attachments included.

If this cover letter is intended to be taken with you while you pound the pavement or attend job fairs, print it on high-quality paper similar (but not necessarily identical) to that of your resume.

How to Become a Pilot for Professional and Recreational Flying

We spoke to an aviation expert to understand the process of becoming a pilot.

If you’ve always dreamt of taking a seat in the cockpit, you might consider getting your pilot's license. Although it's a bit harder than getting your driver's license, it’s an attainable goal for many aviation-obsessed travelers. 

Different kinds of pilots fly a range of aircraft, so the license type you need will vary depending on your goals as a pilot, but the general rules of aviation, learning to fly, and applying for jobs will remain similar. For more information about how to become a pilot, we spoke with Abingdon Mullin, a pilot and founder of Abingdon Co. , a company that designs watches for female pilots. As a pioneer in the aviation industry, she has valuable insights for anyone hoping to take to the skies. 

“My instructor always asked me before each lesson, ‘Did you check your ego at the door?’” says Abingdon. “He was referring to the door of my car in the flight school parking lot. What he was trying to instill in me was to keep an open mind, try things outside of my comfort zone during training, and not let my ego get in the way.” She continues, “It’s an excellent approach and one I still incorporate every time I approach an airplane to go fly.”

Pilot Schools

No specific educational background is required for entry into a pilot school. That said, if you wish to work for a major airline, they might prefer you to have a four-year college degree, but it’s generally not required. “Educational background is not as important because, in flight training, they'll teach you everything you need to know,” says Abingdon. “The only requirements you need are on the medical side. You must have a Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) medical certificate to fly an airplane by yourself, which is part of your private pilot training.”

Choosing a School

Luckily, you have plenty of options when it comes to schooling. If you want a four-year degree, you can attend a university with an aviation program (the Experimental Aircraft Association, or EAA, has a list of programs on its site ). If you want a more intensive option, you can go to an aeronautical university, where the entire curriculum is about flying. “Embry Riddle is the biggest example of this,” explains Abingdon. “You graduate with a four-year degree and your pilot certificates.” This could be an excellent option for those who want to make a career out of aviation. 

There is a school for everyone, though. “Pilot schools come in all shapes and sizes,” says Abingdon. “Some schools are small mom-and-pop businesses at your local airport, [while] some schools have multiple locations all around the country in several states.” 

Courses Offered

If you’re pursuing a bachelor's degree in aviation, you might take courses on air traffic control, aircraft maintenance and safety, or even engineering. It will look a bit different if you’re just in a pilot school to get a license. Abingdon explains, “It depends on which type of school you go to, but for the most part, a typical lesson is one-on-one with you and a flight instructor. One day, you may cover steep turns. Another day, you may cover cross-country flight planning.”

Don’t think you can skip homework. “The instructor would have given you some homework to do before the lesson, so you come in prepared,” says Abingdon. “When they are discussing it with you and teaching it to you in a ‘ground’ lesson, you will work in a classroom with them for an hour or two (depending on the lesson).”

Then, you can use your lesson firsthand in the aircraft. “After your ground lesson, you'll both go out to the airplane and apply the knowledge you just gained in an aircraft,” says Abingdon. “Each daily lesson you do will usually be a combination of ground and flight.”

Unless you’re a full-time college student, you will likely do your training on days off from work or after work. “It's ideal to have three lessons a week, but you should really try to go a minimum of twice a week, or else you run the risk of forgetting and relearning lessons that were already covered,” Abingdon recommends. It can take a few months to become a private pilot or a couple of years to become a commercial pilot. 

Requirements to Be a Pilot

The specific requirements will depend on what type of pilot you want to be. For example, it might be more challenging to become a commercial airline pilot where you’re flying hundreds of passengers than it is to become a recreational pilot flying a small aircraft. There are three classes of medical certificates issued by the FAA : first-class airline transfer pilot, second-class commercial pilot, and third-class private pilot. Vision, hearing, blood pressure, and other specific health standards must be met to obtain a medical certificate, and pilots cannot have any disqualifying conditions (evaluated on a case-by-case basis), including epilepsy, certain heart conditions, psychosis, and other conditions outlined on the FAA website .  

If you wish to become a pilot, an FAA-approved physician (called an Aviation Medical Examiner) will need to evaluate you. Apart from physical requirements, there are some soft skills that all pilots should have, like the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, problem-solving skills, extensive observational skills, and quick reaction time.

Steps to Becoming a Pilot

First, you need to figure out what type of pilot you want to be. There are several different types of licenses you can go after — here’s what you should know about each, according to the FAA website. 

• A student pilot license allows you to learn to fly with a flight instructor present and fly solo after appropriate instructor endorsements and medical certification.
• A recreational pilot certificate allows you to fly, but with limitations to the type of aircraft, the number of passengers, the distance that may be flown from the departure point, and flight into controlled airports, among others.
• A private pilot certificate, one of the most popular types of licenses, lets you carry passengers and use an airplane for limited business use.
• A commercial pilot certificate lets you conduct some operations for compensation and hire.
• An airline transport pilot certificate is required to fly as a captain by some air transport operations.
• A sport pilot certificate allows you to fly a light sport aircraft without an FAA medical certificate. It is typically one of the cheapest and quickest ways to fly, according to the EAA . 

The details like the cost, number of hours flying, and any tests and examinations required will vary between licenses. However, you will generally start with the student pilot certificate and work toward a different pilot license based on your individual goals. 

“A good pilot is always learning, so I never say that the schooling ends,” says Abingdon. “But after your private pilot training is over, you will schedule with a designated pilot examiner and go up for a test. There will be questions on the ground with the examiner, and then the [flight] portion of the test.” Once you complete the examination, you are a certified pilot. 

Abingdon advocates for continued education. “Each pilot certificate you attain is just another tool in your toolbelt of flying, and it will only make you a safer, more capable aviator,” she notes. You can get add-on “ratings” to learn more in-depth information about specific aircraft, flying in inclement weather, and more. 

How Much It Costs

The cost of becoming a pilot will vary depending on the type of pilot you want to be. That said, you can expect that this will be an expensive undertaking. The student pilot certificate is free but requires a medical certificate, which typically costs anywhere from $75 to $200. 

Sport pilot, recreational pilot, and private pilot certificates are good options for those who want to fly as a hobby, with the main difference between them being the hours needed to get the license, the type of aircraft you can fly, and the cost. Costs to get these licenses — which include training fees, aircraft rentals, exam fees, and more — can range from $7,000 up to around $20,000. If you wish to be a commercial airline pilot or airline transport pilot as a career, it can cost up to $100,000, according to Pilot Institute . 

Applying for Jobs

Those seeking a career as a professional pilot must meet FAA requirements. Pilots typically get their FAA-issued certificates and ratings in the following order:

• Student pilot certificate
• Private pilot certificate
• Instrument rating
• Commercial pilot certificate
• Multi-engine rating
• Airline transport pilot certificate

Like any job, the requirements will vary by company. To keep things simple, here is the process to become a Delta Pilot : 

• Initial application
• Application review
• Interview process (which includes an online assessment, a panel interview, and final evaluations)
• Pre-employment screenings
• Delta indoctrination 
• Wing ceremony
• Training (Delta's Advanced Qualification Program (AQP) features state-of-the-art full-motion flight simulators and flight training devices. All pilots must pass the FAA-approved Initial Qualification Curricula.)
• Take flight

For a career as a pilot, you will need to demonstrate extensive experience flying, so this is likely a long-term goal. If you’re just starting, you can work toward your private pilot's license before aiming for a career in aviation as a captain. Abingdon ends with, “Flying is a lot of fun, and it’s definitely brag-worthy once you have your certificate, but if you maintain a humble attitude and check your ego at the door, you will not be a pilot — you will be a true aviator.”

Timing of warning letter to Olentangy Liberty High School baseball coach questioned

A day after The Dispatch requested records about a Liberty High School varsity baseball trip to Georgia that resulted in suspensions for alcohol and drug violations, Olentangy Local School District officials revised a written warning to the coach to reflect a harsher punishment.

Just after 3 p.m. May 2, district treasurer Timothy "Ryan" Jenkins emailed The Dispatch an April 24 warning letter to varsity baseball head coach Ty Brenning that admonished him for his behavior during an unrelated team meeting — not the Georgia trip that one parent described as "a drunken drug fest."

In the original written warning, which Brenning signed, he explained that he was responsible for "letting his emotions get the better of him" when he responded to a player who apparently was joking around. "His word choice and tenner (sic) were both inappropriate and charged with emotion," according to the letter, which refers only in passing to "the recent baseball trip" and does not hold Brenning responsible for leaving the trip early, failing to monitor the team or the multiple nights of alcohol and drug use.

The same day The Dispatch published its initial story , May 3, Brenning signed a revised version of the original that included specifics of the Georgia trip and scolded Brenning for being irresponsible.

Jenkins explained this week that the revised version likely didn't exist when The Dispatch requested it and that the district's revision, which added the Georgia trip problems, was drafted shortly after The Dispatch request was fulfilled.

"My understanding is that this action was enacted AFTER your request—my search did not turn up any drafts, so I can only assume it did not exist in any draft form," Jenkins said. On Friday, Jenkins said that the unsigned draft letter did exist and that he had failed to find it.

According to several parents of players who attended the sports camp, coaches left the players alone in hotel rooms and failed to check in on them nightly . The Dispatch previously reported that a large majority of the team — as many as 19 of 24 varsity team members — were suspended for violating the district's alcohol and drug abuse policy, and one student was taken to a Georgia hospital after overdosing on cannabis gummies.

Jenkins, "out of an abundance of caution" also emailed The Dispatch an email to Brenning from Darin Meeker, Liberty's athletic director, admonishing Brenning for leaving Georgia early and ordering him to get permission if he alters future travel plans. However, none of that detail was included in Brenning's signed April 24 warning letter nor was it included in The Dispatch May 3 reporting.

The Dispatch obtained the May 3 letter signed by Brenning that included specific references to the Georgia trip and Brenning leaving early only from a parent who had requested it after The Dispatch story was published.

In response to questions about why the more detailed letter, even a draft copy, to Brenning was not included in the May 2 Dispatch request, one parent replied:

"The change happened … the day of your article. Seems like a coverup."

Christian Ross, director of district communications, denies that.

"The answer to your question is emphatically no; this (Dispatch) story had no impact on the district’s investigation or any resulting disciplinary action."

The district, citing federal student privacy laws, hasn't commented on Brenning or the Georgia trip, refused to say how many players were suspended and why, and won't acknowledge that there is an ongoing investigation into the matter.

The parents of several players have met as recently as this week with school district officials, seeking more information on Brenning's status and that of his assistants. They are angry that so many students were punished while coaches have not. Not satisfied with answers, they have been told to file official complaints.

Parent and student complaints were responsible for the resignations of the entire coaching staff of the Liberty High School varsity hockey team in early March.

Parents accused Kevin Alexander and his assistants, Darwin McClelland and Richard Smith, of forging an "extremely toxic environment" with belittling and abusive language, including repeated use of the F word and derogatory references to women.

Williston High School celebrates working students with Career Signing Day

WILLISTON, N.D. (KUMV) - Graduation is around the corner for Williston High School students. On Friday, some of them who are planning to work after graduating were honored with Career Signing Day.

Similar to how athletes sign a letter of intent, ten students signed letters with various local businesses. Various industries were involved with the event, including automotive, industrial and electrical companies.

Haylee Sundby signed with Western Veterinary Clinic after spending a few months job shadowing there.

“I’m excited to go full-time and learn more about what I’ll be doing. I will also be attending college in the fall to get my license. I’m excited for all of that,” said Sundby.

Williston High School staff also honored other graduates who are heading to the military and those who have received industrial certifications.

It was a message for Democrats to behave differently than someone who treats others with disdain. Unfortunately, adhering to that maxim in the era of Trump is a recipe for political suicide. To the MAGA minions, including many Republicans in Congress, civil discourse is a thing of the past.

Despite a robust economy, with 15 million new jobs and unemployment rates at record low levels, the electorate, particularly in crucial swing states, seems unimpressed with President Biden’s accomplishments. A record of consequential legislation has done little to offset this lack of enthusiasm.

Is “going low” paying dividends? Trump, aided by the media’s lopsided coverage of his relentless assaults on Biden’s character and policies, is winning the messaging game. The time has come for the Biden camp to launch an overwhelming counteroffensive, replete with highlight reels of Trump’s personal and professional failings — or risk losing in November.

Hysterical editorial

You can tell Democrats are in trouble after reading the hysterical Sun Sentinel editorial of May 15.

The editors are panicking, using pejorative terms like dictator, wife-cheater, election-denier and cult leader in describing Donald Trump.

No mention was made of the disastrous policies of the Biden administration such as sky-high inflation, a failed migrant policy, rampant crime in major blue cities, a foreign policy in shambles, a president with cognitive issues and a clueless vice president.

Most polls show that Biden’s popularity is in the dumper. Do the people realize that, under Trump, things were much better than they are today?

The Sun Sentinel’s hysterical condemnation of Trump is so much partisan blather. The paper’s animus toward Trump is obvious, as it seems you are blinded to the facts by your liberal ideology. Be prepared for the unthinkable: a Trump victory in November.

Another day of infamy?

Dates in American history that will live in Infamy: Dec. 7,1941 (Japan bombs Pearl Harbor); Sept. 11, 2001 (Twin Towers and Pentagon are attacked); Jan. 6, 2021, the insurrection at the U.S. Capitol.

Remember what retired General John Kelly, one of Trump’s former chiefs of staff, said of him: “The depth of his dishonesty is just astounding to me. He is the most flawed person I have ever met in my life.”

We need to keep General Kelly’s remarks in mind when we mark our ballots in the November 5, 2024 presidential election, lest we turn that day into another Day of Infamy in our country.

Savvino-storozhevsky monastery and museum.

Zvenigorod's most famous sight is the Savvino-Storozhevsky Monastery, which was founded in 1398 by the monk Savva from the Troitse-Sergieva Lavra, at the invitation and with the support of Prince Yury Dmitrievich of Zvenigorod. Savva was later canonised as St Sabbas (Savva) of Storozhev. The monastery late flourished under the reign of Tsar Alexis, who chose the monastery as his family church and often went on pilgrimage there and made lots of donations to it. Most of the monastery’s buildings date from this time. The monastery is heavily fortified with thick walls and six towers, the most impressive of which is the Krasny Tower which also serves as the eastern entrance. The monastery was closed in 1918 and only reopened in 1995. In 1998 Patriarch Alexius II took part in a service to return the relics of St Sabbas to the monastery. Today the monastery has the status of a stauropegic monastery, which is second in status to a lavra. In addition to being a working monastery, it also holds the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum.

Belfry and Neighbouring Churches

Located near the main entrance is the monastery's belfry which is perhaps the calling card of the monastery due to its uniqueness. It was built in the 1650s and the St Sergius of Radonezh’s Church was opened on the middle tier in the mid-17th century, although it was originally dedicated to the Trinity. The belfry's 35-tonne Great Bladgovestny Bell fell in 1941 and was only restored and returned in 2003. Attached to the belfry is a large refectory and the Transfiguration Church, both of which were built on the orders of Tsar Alexis in the 1650s.  

To the left of the belfry is another, smaller, refectory which is attached to the Trinity Gate-Church, which was also constructed in the 1650s on the orders of Tsar Alexis who made it his own family church. The church is elaborately decorated with colourful trims and underneath the archway is a beautiful 19th century fresco.

Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is the oldest building in the monastery and among the oldest buildings in the Moscow Region. It was built between 1404 and 1405 during the lifetime of St Sabbas and using the funds of Prince Yury of Zvenigorod. The white-stone cathedral is a standard four-pillar design with a single golden dome. After the death of St Sabbas he was interred in the cathedral and a new altar dedicated to him was added.

Under the reign of Tsar Alexis the cathedral was decorated with frescoes by Stepan Ryazanets, some of which remain today. Tsar Alexis also presented the cathedral with a five-tier iconostasis, the top row of icons have been preserved.

Tsaritsa's Chambers

The Nativity of Virgin Mary Cathedral is located between the Tsaritsa's Chambers of the left and the Palace of Tsar Alexis on the right. The Tsaritsa's Chambers were built in the mid-17th century for the wife of Tsar Alexey - Tsaritsa Maria Ilinichna Miloskavskaya. The design of the building is influenced by the ancient Russian architectural style. Is prettier than the Tsar's chambers opposite, being red in colour with elaborately decorated window frames and entrance.

At present the Tsaritsa's Chambers houses the Zvenigorod Historical, Architectural and Art Museum. Among its displays is an accurate recreation of the interior of a noble lady's chambers including furniture, decorations and a decorated tiled oven, and an exhibition on the history of Zvenigorod and the monastery.

Palace of Tsar Alexis

The Palace of Tsar Alexis was built in the 1650s and is now one of the best surviving examples of non-religious architecture of that era. It was built especially for Tsar Alexis who often visited the monastery on religious pilgrimages. Its most striking feature is its pretty row of nine chimney spouts which resemble towers.
