Leo is expected to perform well on its first day at the box office. As per Sacnilk.com, the first-day box office collection is likely to be ₹ 68 crore nett in India for all languages, as per early estimates. The gross collection of the film in India is expected to be ₹ 80 crore. The overseas collection is likely to be ₹ 65 crore and the worldwide gross is likely to be ₹ 145 crore.

In what is touted as one of the high points of Tamil cinema in 2023, Ajith Kumar’s Thunivu has clashed with Vijay’s Varisu at the box office. Trade experts predict a box office war this week between the two films. The two actors, Ajith and Vijay, are superstars in their own right, and it will be interesting to see how the two films will fare at the box office.

Thunivu is a heist thriller that has Ajith essaying the role of a bank robber. The trailer had him taking a bank hostage and demanding a huge sum. Unlike his previous ventures, Ajith seems to be playing a grey character in the film. It also stars actors Manju Warrier, John Kokken, and Samuthirakani. The movie has music by Ghibran.

The director of Thunivu, H Vinoth had earlier told indianexpress.com , “Thunivu is a multi-genre film with songs, comedy, fights, and everything you expect from a commercial film. To put it one line, it is a game of the wicked.” Thunivu marks Vinoth and Ajith’s third collaboration. The actor-director duo have earlier worked together in Nekronda Paarvai and Valimai.

Thunivu has received a good advance booking in Tamil Nadu . Film trade analyst Ramesh Bala shared on Twitter, “Excellent adv booking for both #Thunivu and #Varisu all over TN.” Speaking about the big box office clash between the two films, he also told Pinkvilla, “It is like Avengers and Avatar’s clash in Hollywood and Salman Khan -Shah Rukh Khan in Bollywood.”

More screens have been added for Ajith-starrer Thunivu in Malaysia.

Boney Kapoor shared a teaser of Ajith's film and wrote, "#Thunivu is all yours ?? Enjoy the festive season with family and friends??."

As per reports, both films are getting 80-90% occupancy in early shows. But the clash also means a share of the market, so the collections of both films might not be huge. It is a long extended weekend and holiday period so these Pongal releases can take advantage of that but it will depend on how Thunivu and Varisu are received.

A case has been reportedly filed against Vijay and Ajith fans for violating rules in Puducherry. A complaint has been filed against both fans for putting up banners without permission in areas including Annasalai, Thirammalai Adigal road. 10 cases were registered against Vijay and Ajith fans in various police stations.

Ajith and Vijay's movie shows will have the Tamil version of Shah Rukh Khan, Deepika Padukone and John Abraham's Pathaan trailer.

Both Ajith Kumar and Vijay's fans were seen bursting firecrackers, dancing and celebrating outside a movie theatre as they gathered to watch the films Thunivu and Varisu.

The Ajith fan lost his life during the Thunivu movie celebration in Chennai. ANI reported, "Bharath Kumar, a fan of actor Ajith Kumar, who jumped in excitement from a slow-moving lorry succumbed to injuries on Poonamallee highways near Rohini theatre, Chennai. Case registered. He had come to watch Thunivu film's 1 am show at the theater: Police officials."

A fan @CinemaWithAB tweeted, "Appreciation post for #AjithKumar?? His swag, style, screen presence, dialogue delivery etc...everything excelled with his extraordinary efforts?? Personally felt this is the best performance of #AK in recent years?#Thunivu".

Shows for both Vijay and Ajith's films Varisu and Thunivu, respectively, began at 1 am and 4 am. As the fans gathered in large numbers, police had to lathi-charge at several locations. After Ajith's fans tore down a banner of Vijay's Varisu placed in the theatres, Vijay's fans also tore many banners of Ajith's Thunivu. This has stirred up an on-field battle between both fan clubs, and police officials came in to calm the situation.

Ajith stars in a decent heist film that is weighed down by generic tropes. The setup of Ajith and H Vinoth’s heist film is intriguing, but when the director finally shows all his cards, it’s not the royal flush one would want it to be.

Ajith Kumar starrer Thunivu and Vijay starrer Varisu have released on the same day, and fans are not happy with this clash. Some Ajith Kumar fans tore posters of Vijay starrer Varisu outside a movie theatre in Chennai.

Ramesh Bala, the box office tracker, says, “If Varisu and Thunivu had come out as a solo release, both the films would have earned about Rs 40 to 45 crore on the opening day in Tamil Nadu, but now, with them coming together, I think each one would earn around Rs 20-25 crore on the first day.” Read More.

Talking to indianexpress.com, H Vinoth shared that Ajith doesn't like his fans promoting his movies. He just wants them to watch his films and enjoy. Vinoth shared, "Ajith is okay with fans doing certain things for fun. But, he believes that they shouldn’t spend all their time just doing such things. He just wants them to watch when a new movie comes out and celebrate it. But, they shouldn’t abuse anyone using a film. Cinema must be just a part of their lives and not life itself." 

Talking about his association with Ajith Kumar, filmmaker H Vinoth told indianexpress.com, "Ajith doesn’t have the airs of a star. He behaves with everyone like a common man. On the sets, he will be like a man next door. We both have a comfortable relationship. We have mutual trust.”

Filmmaker Boney Kapoor, who has co-produced Thunivu, wished that the audience enjoys the film as much as they enjoyed making it. He told DT Next, "I hope you all go to the theaters to watch and enjoy the film as we have enjoyed making the film. I hope the film becomes successful as the team has worked very hard. Ajith and Vinoth have given their best. Manju Warrier has looked glamorous and has given her best. Let's hope everyone's good work is applauded.

The director of Thunivu, H Vinoth shared his two cents on the box office clash between Ajith's film and Vijay's Varisu on Thursday. He told indianexpress.com, "It’s in the hands of the fans to keep it (competition) healthy. Two films are coming out and there is a long holiday for the Pongal festival. People, who have money, can watch both films. Otherwise, they can select one film and watch it."

Film trade expert Ramesh Bala has shared on Twitter that Ajith Kumar's film Thunivu is leading in Tamil Nadu both in terms of screen count and advance bookings. He tweeted, "#Thunivu leads all over TN..Both in screen count and in adv booking.."

The fans of Ajith in the USA are all set for the release of Thunivu. The production house, Lyca Productions shared pictures of promotional vans of the film stationed outside Indian restaurants in Dallas.

The Tamil Nadu government has cancelled the 4 am and 5 am shows of Ajith Kumar's Thunivu from January 13 to January 16. Also, the fans of the actor will not be allowed to anoint milk on the banners of the film placed outside the theaters. 

Speaking about working with Ajith for five years in a row, H Vinoth told indianexpress.com, "I don’t think there’s anything wrong with that. It is pretty comfortable for me, so why not? To put it even more bluntly, the hero is giving me a chance to work with him for this long. So, I took it. Also, with any professional relationship, there will be small arguments and misunderstandings. Sometimes, his suggestions were right and sometimes mine were. But it comes down to trust. The belief that he has in me, and vice versa."

Ghilli Movie Review: On the big screen, after 20 years, Dharani’s ‘Ghilli’ still works better than most hero-oriented movies made today

Let’s go back to April 17, 2004, the day  Ghilli  was released. The new millennium had seen the emergence of a new generation of filmmakers: Bala in December 1999 (so you can cheat a bit and include him among the millennial directors), Gautham Vasudev Menon in 2001, Ameer and Selvaraghavan in 2002. But even amidst this change, the good old  masala -action movie ended up thriving, and Dharani was one of its major champions. He made a mark with  Dhill  in 2001, delivered a bigger blockbuster with  Dhool , in 2003, and he scored a hat-trick with  Ghilli . Despite the new-age directors and their new-age films, the  masala  movie clung on and remained the go-to genre if you wanted to become a big hero. Vikram was praised for  Sethu , but  Dhill  refashioned his image, just like  Run  refashioned Madhavan’s image, and  Thirumalai  and  Dheena  refashioned the images of Vijay and Ajith.

I still remember the excitement of watching some of these films in a theatre, with a much blacker beard. The pace was different from, say, the Vijayakanth and Arun Pandian action movies. The camerawork and the choreography felt new. The sentiment was handled in a fresher, more irreverent fashion. And with this new breed of action stars, the films felt younger, and they were not afraid to be silly in order to draw laughs even as they got serious whenever needed. And best of all, there was a sense of inventiveness. Take Ghilli, for instance, which was adapted from Gunasekhar's  Okkadu , starring Mahesh Babu and Bhumika Chawla. The excellent Telugu version was essentially one long chase, and the romance did not happen until the movie was almost over. You’d have thought they’d make changes for the Tamil remake – but no!

There is no major face-reveal shot for the hero. The hero saves the day, sure, but he is not the superhero from today’s “mass” movies. There is still a semblance of narrative arcs and character arcs. The villain is both comic and cruel. Watching Prakash Raj play one of his most famous parts, I was reminded of how Fahadh Faasil’s character was designed in  Aavesham . We’re watching a similar blend of an OTT cartoon and a killer. Best of all, the conflict has already begun before the hero is in the picture. The fact that Prakash Raj’s character loves his “ chellam ”, played by Trisha, is something that has been going on long before she accidentally bumps into the saviour-hero, played by Vijay. Seen today, it’s remarkable that Trisha and Vijay – as Dhanalakshmi and Velu – hardly get any scenes alone. Even her name is never mentioned to him. He sees it for himself in her certificates. 

It’s the same about her backstory. In order to keep things moving, Dhanalakshmi tells Velu about her tragedies in the midst of the explosive  Arjunaru villu  song sequence – so we never hear her speak to him about anything but the most practical matters. (And of course, we must add that all of Vidyasagar’s songs are explosive, especially  Appadi podu . This was played so much on the TV music channels of the time that I even recognised the faces of the background dancers.) This aspect of abandoning any scene that might hint at a romance serves Vijay very well. The playful, boyish-hero persona is maintained from start to finish. Velu is a champion  kabaddi  player. To him, saving Dhanalakshmi is like another game. To him, winning means getting her away from the bad guy, not getting her to love him. Vijay is in great form, and frankly, I was relieved – then and now – that he switched tracks from those  Kaadhalukku Mariyadhai- type weepies. Sorry guys, I know some of you are fans. But those films are a little too good-hearted and noble for my taste.

A memorable hero. A memorable non-love track with the heroine. A memorable villain. Memorable songs. A super-memorable interval block.  Ghilli  has it all. Even the opening fight is memorable. Seen today, the execution may seem crude, but look at the ambition, the imagination. It’s not just the lazy “one punch sends a henchman flying”-type stunt scene we see even today, sadly. The parkour-style action (long before  Casino Royale  made parkour-style action cool in 2006) happens on a terrace. There’s the danger of traffic below, and almost every bit of building structure is used as a prop. Even the non-action writing is interesting. You think Dhanalakshmi is going to get eve-teased in a scene, but she runs into a cop, and that turns into a domestic comedy sequence, and then – in the blink of an eye – we switch to a father-son chase across rooftops.

Of course, a lot of this credit goes to the Telugu original – but Dharani keeps the engine running smoothly. And there’s enough of a difference between the way Mahesh Babu and Vijay play the protagonist. Watching the two films side by side is to watch two actors in the early stages of becoming huge action-stars, and a lot of what we see of Vijay and Mahesh Babu today goes back to  Ghilli  and  Okkadu . I left the theatre with a slight sadness. Twenty years ago, “writing” was still a major component of the  masala  movie. It was not just about showcasing the hero, giving punch dialogues, doing steps to a random duet, so on and so forth. Yes, the passage of time does show on  Ghilli  – there were a few parts that did not work. And I really wish the film had been shot and staged with the bigness of  Okkadu . But overall, no complaints! This might still be the best Tamil  masala  movie we may get in theatres this year.

The Tamil industry will be witnessing its glorious time ahead, with some of the big projects in the making. With each star working on their ambitious projects so far, like Suriya getting ready with Kanguva and Sivakarthikeyan donning a new look in Amaran, the Tamil film industry is getting ready to be bigger.

In the coming days, we will also see some iconic and star-studded projects. Mani Ratnam and Kamal Haasan will be reuniting for Thug Life, Lokesh Kanagaraj and TJ Gnanavel will be working with Rajinikanth, and some stellar performances will be witnessed through releases like Kottukalli. New Tamil OTT releases movies to watch this week

Enjoy 20 OTT platforms streaming South content including SunNXT, aha, ManoramaMAX, ZEE5 and more at just ₹75.   

PT Sir is headlined by Hiphop Tamizha and is directed by Karthik Venugopalan. In the film, the actor-composer will be playing the role of a physical education trainer who attempts to introduce new activities to school children and in the process, faces some hurdles. The film stars Kashmira Pardeshi as the female lead.

Vallavan Vaguthadhada

Vallavan Vaguthadhada is a crime drama about five people who are in desperate need of money for their own reasons. The film deals with how the five of them come together to execute a mission common mission for their benefit.

Pagalariyaan

Pagalariyaan is an upcoming Tamil film starring Vetri in the lead role. The film is written and directed by Murugan and also stars Akshaya Kandamuthan, Chaplin Balu, Sai Dheena and others. Pagalariyaan is expected to be a romantic thriller.

Thalaimai Seyalagam

Thalaimai Seyalagam is a Tamil political drama series written and directed by filmmaker Vasanthabalan. The film is headlined by actor Kishore and also stars various known faces, including Sriya Reddy, Bharath, Ramya Nambessan, Aditya Menon, Kani Kusruti, Niroop Nandakumar, Darsha Gupta, Sarah Black, Siddharth Vipin, YGM, Santhana Bharathi, Kavitha Bharathi and others. It is backed by actors Radikaa Sarathkumar and R Sarathkumar under their production house banner, Radaan Mediaworks India Limited.

Kalvan is a rural drama starring GV Prakash Kumar and Ivana in the lead roles, with Bharathiraja and Dheena appearing as supporting characters. The film is directed by PV Shankar and is about two petty thieves who live in the forest regions. One of them wants to become a forest officer and in order to get the money for the job, he orchestrates a plan that involves adopting an old man from a hospice.

Election  

Uriyadi-fame Vijay Kumar has joined hands with director Thamizh who helmed Seththumaan for Election. Touted to be a political drama, the film also stars Preethi Asrani and Pavel Navageethan in supporting characters, along with Richa Joshi, George Maryan, and others. Govind Vasantha has scored the music for the film.

Star is directed by Elan of Pyaar Prema Kaadhal-fame and is headlined by Kavin. The film is an underdog story of a boy who aspires to make it big in the movie industry as an actor. The film has music scored by Yuvan Shankar Raja and also features actors Lal, Geetha Kailasam, Aaditi Pohankar, Preity Mukhundhan and others. Star is produced by Sri Venkateswara Cine Chitra and Rise East Entertainment.

Romeo is a romantic drama starring actors Vijay Antony and Mirnalini Ravi in the lead roles. Directed by Vinayak Vaithianathan, the film features the lead actors as a newly married couple whose marriage took place much against the wishes of the wife even though the husband is very much in love. With the wife aspiring to be an actor, the husband decides to produce her film on the condition that he will play the hero.

The Boys is a comedy drama directed by Santhosh Peter Jayakumar and revolves around the care-free lives of five male roommates. The director has played the lead role along with a cast comprising of Sha Ra, Arshad, KPY Vinoth, Yuvaraj Ganesan, and Redin Kingsley.

Aranmanai 4

Aranmanai 4 is the fourth installment in the horror comedy franchise created by Sundar C. The film stars the director in the lead role, along with Tamannaah Bhatia, Raashii Khanna, Santhosh Pratap, Yogi Babu and others. Aranmanai 4 will revolve around a folklore Baak and how a certain family is impacted by it.

Sabari is an emotional thriller which is headlined by Varalaxmi Sarathkumar. The actor plays the role of a mother in the film directed by filmmaker Anil Katz in his directorial debut. The film revolves around a mother's efforts to save her daughter from an obstacle. The film also stars Ganesh Venkatraman, Shashank, Mime Gopi, Sunaina, Baby Krithika, Rajashri Nair, Bhadram, and others.

Kurangu Pedal

Kurangu Pedal is a rural drama featuring a boy's attempts to learn how to ride a bicycle. The film is directed by Kamalakannan and is backed by Sivakarthikeyan, Savitha Shanmugam and SuMee Baskaran. Kurangu Pedal was screened at the Indian Panorama section of the 53rd International Film Festival of India, Goa.

'Maharagni' teaser: Kajol is a woman on mission in the action-thriller

Actors Kajol and Prabhu Deva have reunited after 27 years for their upcoming film 'Maharagni'. Ajay Devgn unveiled the action-thriller's first-look teaser on Tuesday, May 28. 'Maharagni - Queen of Queens' is an intense action and gripping tale of a vengeful woman.

Ajay Devgn released the teaser which begins with glimpses of Prabhu Deva performing action sequences. Kajol, who plays the titular character in the actioner, can be seen as a woman who is on a mission. The actor is also seen engaged in high-octane action sequences. The clip ends with Kajol saying, "Power is not demanded, it is taken away."

Sharing the clip, Ajay captioned, " Ali re aali Maharagni aali (sic)." Meanwhile, Kajol wrote, "So kicked to share this with you guys. Maharagni.. aka Queen of queens. Take a moment and have fun ! Hope you guys like it. Directed by Charan Tej Uppalapati (sic)."

Helmed by Telugu director Charan Tej Uppalapati, the film also features Samyuktha, Prabhu Deva, Naseeruddin Shah, Jishu Sen Gupta, Aditya Seal, Chaya Kadam, Pramod Pathak. It is backed by Venkata Anish Dorigillu and Harman Baweja.

The director of the upcoming film said, "Collaborating with actors like Kajol, Prabhudeva, Naseer sir, Samyuktha Menon and Jisshu Sengupta has elevated the project to new heights. Their unmatched charisma and acting abilities breathe life into the characters, and I can't wait for the audience to witness this on screen."

The film will be released in Hindi, Tamil, Telugu, Kannada and Malayalam.
