PhD Programs at the School of Arts

Developing and transition countries are affected by a multitude of environmental, political, economic, socio-cultural, and technical development problems and disparities. These occur in many different contexts, and their frequency and acuteness have greatly increased in the 20th century. The challenge for research that aims to produce knowledge relevant to prevention and mitigation of such problems and disparities is that these do not occur independently of each other, but are closely interrelated, appearing in clusters.

The major objective of PhD program at SOA is to produce qualified researchers and professionals who are able to coordinate, guide, analyze, evaluate, improve and propagate efforts aimed identifying causes and problems regarding issues related to environmental, economic, socio-cultural issues, problems and disparities in developing countries. By doing so the program aims to produce highly qualified and competent researchers and professionals who can not only proactively and constructively take part in national and international researches and debates in the field, but can also provide effective recommendations based on their studies to the policy making bodies at various levels.

PhD in the Department of Development Studies

A wide range of issues connected with environmental, political, economic, sociocultural, technical and technological development influence emerging and developing countries that are in transition. These issues occur in various circumstances, and in the twenty-first century, both their frequency and acuity have substantially increased. The challenge for research that strives to develop knowledge pertinent to the reduction, prevention and mitigation of global and local problems and disparities is that these do not occur independently of one another but are instead intricately connected and manifest in clusters. Such clusters of problems are referred to as  “syndromes of global change.”

In the context above, the Department of Development Studies provides excellent opportunities to conduct (interdisciplinary) research with options for a variety of concentrations. The PhD program is designed to offer candidates an outstanding opportunity to carry out cutting-edge research to address the issues surrounding “syndromes of global change” through original contribution. The PhD candidates are expected to significantly advance the discourses on national and international development challenges and discourses.

The Department accepts PhD applicants on A ROLLING basis, any time, throughout the year. The potential PhD applicants can reach out to the Department with their proposal directly or through a potential supervisor from the Department. Before being accepted into the Department’s PhD program, candidates must go through a thorough selection process as per the criteria set by the Department.

Ongoing PhD Research Themes

  • The Returns of Educational Migration in Nepal

The overall objective of this study is to explore the impact of transnational student migration at both household and societal level in Nepal, with particular attention paid to the role of gender and class. A significant number of Nepalese youths migrate with the purpose of pursuing a higher education abroad. Historically speaking India has been the principal destination for Nepalese going abroad for both employment opportunities and education, but in recent years North America, Australia and Europe have provided pathways for student and highly skilled migration for people from the middle and upper classes. With a focus on returnee student migrants this sub-study explores, firstly, how academic, technical and social skills acquired abroad are used when re-establishing a life back in Nepal; secondly how highly educated returnees envision to contribute to build up democratic institutions in post-conflict Nepal through their engagement in civic, social and political organizations. Through its focus on a group of relatively privileged migrants it sheds light on transnational student migration as a potential resource for democracy-building in Nepal, both in relation to a potential increase in political and civic engagement furthered by migrants’ know-how with other socio-political systems, and to the ways in which experiences gained abroad may contribute to challenge existing social hierarchies, including that of gender, at both household and societal level. This project is a collaboration between Aarhus University (Denmark), Kathmandu University (Nepal), North-Eastern Hill University (India) and University of Copenhagen (Denmark). The project is funded by Consultative Research Committee for Development Research (FFU) under Denmark’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs. • Social and Territorial Impacts of Armed Conflict-induced Displacement and the Livelihoods of Internally Displaced Persons (IDPs) in Nepal

The main objective of this PhD research was to analyze the socio-economic situation of the IDPs and examine their interaction patterns, coping strategies, available means of livelihoods, vulnerability and risks in the new urban environment and the existing networks with the home villages. The research analyzed the policy response of the state towards IDPs and examined the process of formation of marginal habitats.

This research was conducted by Dr. Anita Ghimire.

  • Access of Dalits and Socially Excluded People to Land Resource: Livelihood Insecurity and Social Conflict

The main objective of this PhD research was to examine the policies, legislations or regulations and practices related to access of and control over land resources by Dalits and other socially excluded groups as well as to identify the problems and opportunities inherent in the current policy and legislative sphere. The study explored the impact of the provisions in these policies and regulations on the livelihoods of socially excluded groups.

This research was conducted by Dr. Purna Nepali.

  • Tourism, Conflict and Peace in Nepal

The main objective of this PhD research was to assess both the role of tourism in conflict and the impact of conflict on the development of the tourism sector in Nepal. Second, it aimed to analyse if and how the tourism industry contributed towards resolving armed conflict and restoring peace in the country as well as to evaluate its potential for sustainable tourism development in the post-conflict period. It analysed the role of such actors towards reducing the conflict proneness of violent economic and political environments and towards achieving sustainable development.

This research was conducted by Dr. Pranil Kumar Upadhyaya.

  • Livelihood Futures in Resource-scarce Areas and the Quest for Inclusion of Marginal Groups

In places where natural resources are scarce, various groups may vie for the control as well as for access to any alternative means of securing a living. Making comparative studies of resource-scarce areas in South Asia and East Africa, this research project aimed to identify new livelihood strategies for groups vulnerable to exclusion, particularly strategies that diminish reliance on natural resources. In Nepal, this research was conducted in the far western region of Nepal, with food insecurity as its central theme. This was a collaborative research project of Department of Development Studies, University of Zurich and NCCR North-South.

Dr. Nirmal Kumar B.K.

  • Contested Development

Though some sections of Nepal’s society have been able to improve their livelihoods in recent years, contemporary life in rural Nepal is still characterized by the widespread persistence of inequality and poverty. Dissatisfied with the developmental performance of the State, social/political movements started to claim to better represent poor people’s aspirations in the recent years. The PhD research addressed this issue by first mapping the existing regional movements, and by then selecting one such movement for in-depth analysis. This PhD aimed to contribute to the growing and very contested global debate on “social movements” as alternatives to state-led poverty-oriented rural development. This was a collaborative research project of Department of Development Studies, University of Zurich, and NCCR North-South.

Dr. Mahendra Sapkota

  • Migration, Transitional Politics and Rural Governance in Nepal

Throughout history, migration has been a major factor in shaping Nepal’s demographic changes. In the long history of Nepal’s migration, there have been many significant phases that have shaped Nepal’s political as well as social fabric. One such phase was observed during the Armed Conflict, between 1996-2006, during which an upsurge in the rural-urban migration as well as international migration from Nepal took place. Many Nepalese, particularly the youth, have continued to migrate to urban areas or even to third countries as the conflict has destroyed much of the infrastructure and socio-political institutions in which their livelihood has traditionally depended. This in turn is having a multidimensional impact on issues such as local governance and politics, education of children, quality of living, income levels and social networking. This study aimed to focus particularly on; 1) how the on-going political transition and identity-based politics is influencing rural out migration, and 2) what the impacts of rural out migration were on local political participation and citizenship. This project was collaboration between Aarhus University (Denmark), Kathmandu University (Nepal), North-Eastern Hill University (India) and University of Copenhagen (Denmark).

Testimonial

Research Methodology and Buddhist literature are very precious

"I am a Ph.D. student in the Faculty of Buddhist studies at Lumbini Buddhist University. I am interested in increasing my knowledge of Buddhism so I applied for the Ph.D. program. I am busy with dhamma teaching in my country and I am very satisfied to join the online Ph.D. program of LBU. I am very impressed by the level of support, structure, and professors of LBU. The courses for Research Methodology and Buddhist literature are very precious for the students. I have learned so much and it is believed that the skills I have learned through this program will support me in my research work. So, I am very pleased to be a student of LBU."

Dr.Khin Maung Kyi -

Sandhya Regmi

I feel privileged to have been enrolled in Ph. D. at LBU in my search for an interface where Buddhism meets modern civilization to solve emerging environmental problems. I hold the belief that we need more than technological advancement and legislative intervention to deal with the ongoing degradation of the environment, over-exploitation of natural resources, conflicts, and threats to mankind and our mother earth. I see a crucial element missing from it to constitute a holistic approach that could lead towards achieving environmental preservation and sustainable development for our healthier, happier, and peaceful coexistence. This missing element is BUDDHIST PHILOSOPHICAL TEACHINGS and the application of its ETHICAL and MORAL CODES in our lives. I, therefore, seek to explore ways to mitigate the environmental problems through a HYBRID APPROACH comprising the blend of Materialistic/Technical and Spiritual/Buddhist approaches. Out of my passion for Buddhism, I have painted over 50 portraits of Buddha on canvas and have exhibited them both inside and outside Nepal to spread the message of peace, creativity, and harmony. I have attended several international Buddhist conferences, and have been conducting a series of philanthropic and charity events under the umbrella of Buddha Harmony Foundation, of which I am the Founder President. Currently, I am working in Manila as an International Consultant in a Megaproject funded by ADB and JICA. Being a scholar of Science and Technology throughout my life with post-graduate degrees in Engineering from the Universities of Germany and Singapore and a research fellowship at the University of Tokyo Japan, and with over 20 years of professional experience as an Environmental Specialist, Energy Advisor, Program Manager, and Contracts Manager in Infrastructure Development Projects in Nepal and abroad, I have now resolved to undertake doctoral research in Applied Buddhism at LBU, which, I believe, will become an international center for its excellence in Buddhist studies developing Lumbini as an academic hub.

School for International Training (SIT) is pleased to announce the launch of two new online PhD programs, one in international relations and one in sustainability , as part of SIT’s 60th anniversary celebration. Both programs expand upon the global university’s six decades of experiential education and worldwide network of partnerships.

“These two new dynamic doctorates will be grounded in SIT’s powerful experiential learning model and combine online coursework with residencies overseas,” says SIT President Dr. Sophia Howlett. “Students will gain, in real-time, a unique global perspective they can apply to their careers.”

SIT’s programs are developed around a framework of the world’s most critical global issues. The international relations doctorate has been created through the lens of ‘Geopolitics and Power,’ with courses that specialize in forced migration, peace and conflict studies, and global governance.

“This part-time four-year program is designed for working professionals in international affairs with an interest in peacebuilding, conflict and refugee response, and humanitarian affairs” says Dr. Bruce Dayton, who was instrumental in shaping the new program and will serve as its chair. “Students will critique traditional approaches to geopolitics and offer evidence-based approaches to improved human security.”

Dr. Joe Lanning is the chair of the new PhD in sustainability, a degree classified under both the ‘Climate and Environment’ and ‘Development and Inequality’ critical global issues. He helped design the curriculum, which focuses on ways to contribute to climate change mitigation, advocate for social equity, and innovate sustainable practices for economic prosperity.

“This part-time program is for professionals enthusiastic about producing evidence-based analysis for sustainable transformations, the relationship of science and society for sustainable futures, and approaches to community-based problem solving,” says Dr. Lanning. “Graduates of the program will be prepared to lead multi-stakeholder groups as they will be effective communicators in policy circles, academic and organizational contexts, and in popular science.”

Both programs, which will be accepting applications from June 1 to November 1 for their first cohorts beginning June 2025, draw from SIT’s unique brand of in-depth, reflective practice and intensive research training and will engage students where they are in their academic and professional careers. The programs will offer immersive doctoral seminars, and courses will focus on theory, research methods, applied practice, professional development, and dissertation preparation. Each degree will allow students to pursue their specializations in content areas at any level and subfield. Students can also request to transfer up to 15 credits of relevant previous graduate coursework during admission, thereby reducing the overall credit requirement from 64 to 49.

The online degrees include two 10-day international residencies. For the international relations program, students will examine the refugee crisis and rise of liberalism in Serbia, as well as the landscape of conflict and the power of alliances in Jordan. Students in the sustainability program will travel to Portugal to study renewable energy innovation and marine conservation. Then, they will explore case studies in Tanzania’s Zanzibar Archipelago, which is at the forefront of blue economy initiatives.

SIT’s new doctorates expand on the institution's diverse strengths in international programming. SIT’s global campus comprises 77 programs, nearly 30 learning centers, and 549 faculty and staff across all seven continents. SIT Study Abroad delivers academically rigorous, accredited undergraduate summer and semester programs around the world. In 2018, SIT Graduate Institute introduced a one-year global master’s format delivered at SIT’s learning centers around the world, and in 2021, SIT launched its first doctoral degree in global education. Its first cohort graduates this year.

“These one-of-a-kind global programs build on SIT’s long history of training the next generation of intelligent, compassionate global citizens at a time when the world faces unprecedented challenges,” says Dr. Howlett. “Our dedicated faculty have carefully designed these programs to prepare students to tackle urgent issues of the day in a global context—all while reflecting on SIT’s core values of community, intercultural understanding, social justice, and sustainability.”

Many of SIT’s graduates go on to work in high-level positions with organizations such as the United Nations, colleges and universities, nongovernmental organizations, and significant international foundations. Graduates of SIT’s PhD programs will similarly benefit from the institute’s broad professional and alumni networks throughout the world.

For prospective students interested in learning more about the new PhDs, SIT faculty will be available to answer questions during a summer  webinar series . Students can also learn more about the application process or contact an admissions counselor here .

School for International Training (SIT), the academic arm of  World Learning , was established in 1964 as a training center for the first Peace Corps volunteers. Today, SIT is a U.S.-accredited global university offering undergraduate study abroad programs, including the comparative  International Honors Program , and globally focused graduate and doctoral degrees and certificates. SIT prepares students to be effective changemakers and global citizens through experiential education focused on the world's most critical global issues. For more information, visit  sit.edu.

Marine to art major: ‘Art never really stopped for me, even while at war’

Edna Martinez  is not your typical art major at Augusta University.

Born in Mexico, her family moved to Las Vegas when she was 3 years old. While she had many interests growing up as a child, art was always a constant.

“I’ve done art ever since I was a kid, since I was really little,” said Martinez, who accepted her degree in art from Augusta University this spring. “I think it’s a family thing. My dad is an artist. He doesn’t call himself one, but he is. And most of my mom’s side of the family, they’re musicians or some sort of artist. So, I think it’s just in my blood.”

But after high school, Martinez’s life took a completely different path.

“I joined the  Marine Corps  when I was 18,” Martinez said. “I went on deployments while I was there to Afghanistan. And I was in the Marine Corps for four years.”

When people learn that she served as a U.S. Marine, Martinez acknowledges that most are surprised.

“I’m pretty laid back, so when I tell people that I was in the Marine Corps, they don’t really believe it at first,” Martinez said. “I was in the Marine Corps from 2010 to 2014, and I deployed twice to Afghanistan, once when I was 19, and then I turned 21 out there. But even while I was out there, my family sent me a sketchbook. They sent me pencils to draw with. And even while I was out there, I was trying to work on making portraits and drawing for other Marines. Art never really stopped for me, even while I was at war.”

Turning to art

After serving in the Marine Corps, Martinez moved to Augusta with her then-partner and took a well-paying job at then Fort Gordon, now Fort Eisenhower. Despite earning enough money to buy a nice house in the Summerville neighborhood, Martinez admits she wasn’t happy.

“I really didn’t like the job. In fact, I hated it. It was really depressing,” Martinez said, explaining that doing intel for the military was extremely stressful. “So, I decided I was going to take another job in Florida.”

Initially, when she applied for the new job in Florida, the position did not require a bachelor’s degree.

“But I had to wait to get a clearance for the job. So, after waiting that amount of time, they renewed the contract and suddenly I needed a degree,” Martinez said. “I think it’s funny how things worked out because, by this point, I had just bought a house here. And so I was like, ‘Well, I guess I’ll go get a degree in  art . Augusta University is just around the corner from my house. I’ll just get an art degree, and it’ll be fine.’ And then, to my surprise, I fell in love with it.”

Taking a variety of art classes including drawing and ceramics, Martinez was able to look at her world in a new light.

“I realized I was miserable at my job, and I really enjoyed art, and it helped me open up and get in touch with some feelings that I was having,” she said. “I know this sounds really cheesy, but it helped me get in touch with my emotions. I realized exactly how miserable I was at my job there and how much I didn’t want to take the job in Florida.

“So, even though I had gotten the clearance, I quit my job. I took a really big pay cut, but it was worth it. I got a job as a barista and started art school,” Martinez added, laughing. “I know, it’s the big cliché.”

But through that experience, Martinez said she learned an important lesson: Not only did she love art. She needed it. Martinez said she was recently diagnosed with post-traumatic stress disorder following her service.

“Art has been a form of therapy for me more than ever this semester as I started treatment for PTSD and needed a way to decompress,” she said. “Art has literally saved my life at this point.”

Exploring medical illustration

Back when she was still working on base at Fort Eisenhower, a friend happened to tell her about the  medical illustration  program at Augusta University. Established in 1948, Augusta University has the oldest graduate program in medical illustration in the world.

The medical illustration program has been continuously accredited since 1967, and it is one of just four programs in North America accredited by the Commission on Accreditation of Allied Health Education Programs.

“After I heard about it, I thought, ‘Well, I mean, I’m already here taking art, I might as well try.’ And that’s where I’m at now,” Martinez said. “I’ll apply to the medical illustration program this fall, so hopefully in the spring I’ll start my master’s degree here. Fingers crossed.”

But before she has even applied to the medical illustration program,  Martinez  has already become a published illustrator. Earlier this year, she had an illustration published in an Augusta University anatomy atlas titled,  “Anatomy and Physiology I: An Interactive Histology Atlas.”

Martinez said she thinks getting a job where she could help create images for educational videos and textbooks for doctors and surgeons would be a fulfilling career.

“Just being able to use your art to teach and show people something that they wouldn’t normally be able to clearly see during an actual medical procedure, I think would be really rewarding,” she said. “So, once I found out you could get a job doing medical drawings like that, I was excited.”

In order to achieve her goal of getting accepted into the medical illustration program, Martinez has not only studied art, but she has also taken several biology, anatomy, kinesiology and zoology classes.

More: University System of Georgia ending waiver to test-score admission requirements in 2026

“This is not fantasy. This is real,” Martinez said. “And you need somebody who knows the body and anatomy more intimately than your average artist in order to get it right.”

Scott Thorp , chair of the  Department of Art and Design , said Martinez was a standout student from the very beginning, when she first took his Drawing I class.

“Edna’s journey is a testament to the type of person she is. She’s always been driven and looked to art as an outlet. But now, she’s turning it into a career,” Thorp said.

“I think Edna’s story illustrates well how art can be both a passion and a career,” Thorp added. “She’s really honed her skills and found a sense of healing at the same time.”

Receiving her degree

When Martinez received her bachelor’s degree in art from Augusta University, members of her family from Las Vegas were in the audience, cheering her on as she crossed the stage.

“I’m the first in my family to graduate from college, so my mom is coming into town for it, and her sister is coming to town, too. It’ll be a big deal for them to see,” Martinez said prior the commencement in May. “I don’t think my mom would miss it for the world.”

And no matter what path she chose in life, Martinez said her family always provided her unconditional love and support.

“I’m the first in my family to have gone into the military. I’m the first to go to college. So, now, I’ll be the first to graduate,” she said. “And hopefully, eventually, I want to get a master’s degree in medical illustration.”

But Martinez said she doesn’t plan to stop there.

“I’d like to get a doctorate in anatomy or something like that. I think it’d be cool to be Dr. Martinez,” she said. “But my family is really proud of me. They all think it’s pretty cool. I think, at first, it sounded a little odd. I mean, I think every art student and every artist gets asked, ‘You really want to pursue art?’ But once they see how good you can be at it and that it is your passion, they get it.”

In fact, Martinez said her family and friends seemed to always know she was an artist at heart.

“A lot of people over the years told me to pursue art. They would say, ‘Why don’t you do art for a living?’ And I was like, ‘I can’t make money doing art,’” Martinez said. “Then, it turns out that money didn’t matter. I quit a job that was paying me enough to buy a house in Summerville at 26 years old. I took a big leap, but I needed to be happy.

“As my mom says, I’ve always been a little crazy like that,” Martinez added. “But my family has also told me, ‘We couldn’t do what you’re doing. We are proud of you.’ That means more to me than anything.”

She Just Earned Her Doctorate at 17. Now, She’ll Go to the Prom.

Dorothy Jean Tillman II of Chicago made history as the youngest person to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health at Arizona State University.

Dorothy Jean Tillman II stands at a lectern wearing a black cap and gown at Arizona State University’s commencement.

By Alexandra E. Petri

When Dorothy Jean Tillman II successfully defended her dissertation in November 2023 to earn her doctoral degree from Arizona State University, she couldn’t wait to share the news with her best friend.

“It was a surreal moment,” Dr. Tillman said, “because it was crazy I was doing it in the first place.”

Dr. Tillman, at only 17, became the youngest person to earn a doctoral degree in integrated behavioral health from Arizona State’s College of Health Solutions, all before she was eligible to vote. Earlier this month, Dr. Tillman, now 18, took part in Arizona State’s commencement ceremony and delivered remarks as the outstanding 2024 graduate at the College of Health Solution’s convocation.

Lesley Manson, program director for the doctorate of behavioral health at Arizona State and Dr. Tillman’s doctoral chair, said Dr. Tillman displayed extraordinary perseverance, hard work and dedication for her young age, tackling every challenge head-on.

“She can serve as a real role model,” Ms. Manson said.

Dr. Tillman, called D.J. by her family and friends, was an early bloomer. She grew up in Chicago and was home-schooled from a young age, first in a group setting through online classes, and then by her mother, Jimalita Tillman, a single parent with a background in community theater.

Dr. Tillman was part of a gifted program before transitioning to home-schooling. Jimalita Tillman continued her daughter on an accelerated track: By the time she was 8, she was taking high school classes. While most 9-year-olds were learning math and reading, Dr. Tillman was starting college online.

At the time, they lived with Jimalita Tillman’s mother, Dorothy Wright Tillman, a civil rights activist who worked alongside the Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. and was a Chicago alderman. Dr. Tillman is her grandmother’s namesake (hence the II at the end of Dr. Tillman’s name).

During her early college days, Dr. Tillman’s classroom was often a Starbucks in Chicago, and her days began as soon it opened, she said. Her go-to order was an iced peach green tea with lemonade.

“Around the time when kids went to lunch, we’d be closing the computer,” said Dr. Tillman, who said her discipline and focus come from her grandmother.

Because of her age, Dr. Tillman lived at home while pursuing her higher education, and most of her coursework was online — a challenge for a self-described social butterfly. “I do love meeting new people and talking to people and understanding them and how their brains work,” she said. She found other ways to stay connected with friends through after-school activities.

At 10, she earned her associate degree in psychology at the College of Lake County in Illinois. At 12, she received her Bachelor of Science in humanities at Excelsior College in New York, and at 14, she earned a Master of Science from Unity College in Maine. She chose those fields because they can help scientists “understand why people treat the environment the way they do,” she told Time for Kids in a July 2020 interview.

Ellen Winner, a professor of psychology at Boston College and the author of “Gifted Children: Myths and Realities,” said that children like Dr. Tillman have a motivational intensity she calls a “rage to master.”

“One of the reasons they push themselves is they have a high, innate ability of some kind, and so learning, in whatever they are gifted in, comes easily to them and it’s very pleasurable,” she said. Schools are often not equipped for such gifted children, she added, which may lead parents to home-school their children. The trade-off, she and some experts say, is missing out on socialization and learning with children their age.

“There’s no perfect solution to kids like this,” Ms. Winner said.

Jimalita Tillman said she was sure her daughter was finished with higher education after earning her master’s degree. Dr. Tillman had just launched an organization to support Black youth in Chicago interested in STEM and the arts called the Dorothy Jeanius STEAM Leadership Institute. It was 2020, just after the beginning of the pandemic.

She was surprised when her daughter said she wanted to pursue her doctorate, and even tried to dissuade Dr. Tillman. But Dr. Tillman wanted to help young people with their mental health. She told her mother to trust her.

“I had to follow her lead,” Jimalita Tillman, 42, said.

Dr. Tillman was accepted into the management concentration at Arizona State’s College of Health Solutions, an online doctorate program. Her thesis on developing programs to reduce the stigma for college students seeking mental health services was based on a study she conducted for an in-person internship at the Illinois Institute of Technology in Chicago. Dr. Tillman hopes her story resonates with girls who are talkative, outgoing “out-there kind of girls who are trying to figure themselves out but are very smart.”

“I want them to see someone who has taken that energy, sparkle and excitement and packaged it in a way that is classy and beautiful,” she said.

Dr. Tillman may now have her doctorate, but she’s also excited about teenage things — like attending a prom. On Saturday, she going as her best friend’s date to his senior dance. They’re taking an Escalade outfitted with stars on the ceiling, she said, a feature she requested and that her mother made happen.

Dr. Tillman has been focused on school and her professional pursuits, and she plans to host her institute’s summer camp again. Then, she said, she plans to take a beat and have a “fun teenage summer,” doing things she loves, discovering new hobbies and figuring herself out in the process.

“I want to focus on who I am,” she said.

Methodist pastor in Gainesville to use doctorate degree to help others

The Rev. Dr. Mary Mitchell celebrated earning her Doctor of Ministry degree from Emory Candler School of Theology with family and friends on Saturday.

Her passion to help others was the reason she pursued her doctorate degree, said Mitchell, who has been senior pastor at Bartley Temple United Methodist Church in northeast Gainesville since 2011.

Her dissertation was titled "Equipping and Motivating Local and Rural Pastors for Ministry."

"I want to make a difference," said Mitchell, who is part of the North Central District Rural Church Network created in 2021. The network includes 18 Black churches in the district that are underserved and its members strive to bring churches together and equip them with resources to prepare them for their roles in the communities they serve.

Growing up in Louisiana, Mitchell dedicated herself to the Lord at age 11, and her thirst for education was fueled when she heard a message on the radio one day from singer Lou Rawls that stuck with her.

"Without an education, you might as well be dead," was the message delivered by Rawls said Mitchell.

After graduating from Lake Providence Senior High School in Lake Providence, Louisiana, Mitchell’s path to higher education began when she earned an associate’s degree from Los Angeles City College, a degree from the Los Angeles Medical Nursing Program before graduating from the Florida Community College Jacksonville Police Academy, Edward Waters College with an undergraduate degree, Jacksonville Theological Seminary with a bachelor's degree and master's degree, Asbury Theological Seminary with a Master of Divinity degree, which led to her earning her doctorate from Emory Candler School of Theology.

"The ultimate goal is to empower pastors and impact the congregation positively and spread the kingdom of God," Mitchell said. "If we're not doing that, we're just showing up on Sundays."

Mitchell is also a member of Impact Duval - a group of pastors in the Duval community in northeast Gainesville that helps residents become self-aware and self-sufficient.

"That's why we created Impact Duval to meet the needs of the community because one church and one pastor can't do it by themselves," Mitchell said.

Mitchell plans on creating a platform to help local and rural pastors access the proper training to becoming a pastor.

The platform will help trainees be accountable to complete their work because other pastors will see their progress and check if they have completed their work or not, she said

"I fight for those who can't fight for themselves," Mitchell said. "I work to find out what skills they need.”

She also plans on creating a book that covers what she shared in her dissertation, Mitchell said, as well as creating a set pay salary for local pastors.

"I heard that some pastors are receiving $250 a month and that's wrong on so many levels," Mitchell said.

Some pastors suffer from burnout and lack the skills and confidence they need to be successful pastors, Mitchell said.

Through interviews and focus groups, Mitchell researched problems and solutions to create effective training methods.

"There's no such thing as a part-time pastor," Mitchell said. "Most are working full-time jobs. As a pastor you are on-call 24/7. I strive to find training methods to tailor to them so they don't spread themselves thin."

The theme for Mitchell's ceremony was, "More Was Required."

It featured singing by Elder Dr. D.E. Richardson II, founder and pastor of TOPROC in Gainesville, Sharon McClendon and Minister Sebrenah Phillips of DaySpring Baptist Church.

There was a video presentation describing Mitchell's journey and a performance by the Bartley Temple praise dancers.

Family, friends and church members showered her with gifts and flowers and shared how much Mitchell meant to them.

The keynote speaker was the Rev. Dr. Marie Herring, pastor of DaySpring, which is located directly across the street from Bartley Temple on Northeast Eighth Avenue in Gainesville.

Herring's speech referred to the tagline in Ford automobile commercials which states, "Built for the road ahead."

Mitchell and those attending the ceremony are built for the journey ahead, Herring said.

"When you go through trouble, God will be there," she said. "There's a reason why your rearview mirror is smaller than your front window."

Cars go through rigorous road tests and adverse conditions to test their strength, Herring said. "Whenever you are going to do something, see it as a road test you are going through in life," Herring said
