UPDATE : This article was originally posted on September 2, 2020. It has been updated with new information and tips below.

Located in one of the most important up-and-coming cities for entrepreneurship, the IE MBA continues to rank as a top-choice school for globally-minded innovators who seek to use business school as a step toward greater career success.

However, with a highly customizable yet rigorous 1-year program (45% of the course is customizable), a strong focus on online learning (IE’s liquid learning methodology was created pre-COVID, giving them a leg up when it comes to online learning!) and a Tech-focused MBA, competition to join IE’s elite MBA is more difficult than ever.

That’s why we’ve prepared this guide to help you use your IE admissions essays to stand out. We’ve rounded up our best tips to ensure you give your IE application your best shot.

1. Who is IE looking for?

IE business school

(Photo courtesy of @ iebusiness on Instagram)

“We seek motivated, creative and high-potential candidates who stand out for their academic and/or professional achievements, as well as interpersonal skills. We take a holistic approach when evaluating each candidate in order to bring in the most talented people into our international classrooms.” IE Admissions

Every year, IE literally searches the globe ( more than 44 nationalities are represented in a class that is 92% international) for the outstanding professionals given the honor of joining one of its two annual classes, each composed of around 350 students. With a strong emphasis on diversity, there is no “typical” IE student, yet the average admitted student is 30 years old .

Beyond the impressive statistics, though, IE is looking for candidates who want to make a positive impact on the world through their careers. That’s why, in addition to strong academic performance (demonstrated through the GMAT and university grades), IE seeks candidates who:

QUESTION THE STATUS QUO

and open your mind to new ways of thinking as a member of a diverse, global community.

DARE TO BE DIFFERENT

and focus on transforming yourself to face new career challenges head on

ACT OUTSIDE YOUR COMFORT ZONE

and discover that there are no limits to what you can do.

BELIEVE IN YOURSELF

as a future Dream-Doer, with your sights set on success for both yourself and those in your network.

HAVE AN ENTREPRENEURIAL SPIRIT

that pushes you to explore boundless avenues of collaboration and success.

If this sounds like a community in which you’d be right at home, you’ll first have to prove you’ve got what it takes by successfully answering IE’s admissions essay questions.

2. How should I answer the IE essay questions?

Writing any admissions essay is a tough task. However, in an effort to streamline their application process this year, IE raised the bar by presenting a new, highly open-ended question.

Keep reading for a more in-depth look at how to turn this rather open-ended task into a standout essay!

2.1. Essay 1 Tips

IE Essay questions

As an admissions consultant who encourages clients to use the MBA application process to reflect on past accomplishments and future ambitions, I personally think this question can be an excellent exercise in self-reflection.

The open format allows you to include plenty of information about the experiences and examples you think make you unique .

At its core, this essay is focused on allowing IE to get to know the person behind the data, understanding how you have demonstrated leadership and excellence in your life, as well as showing off your fit with IE’s highly global MBA program.

That means your first task is to decide what you want IE to know about you . Consider the fact that they have read your letters of recommendation, your CV, and all the information you typed into the online forms. If you’re not sure where to start, review IE’s mission statement here.

Good examples would include — but are certainly not limited to — how you created a new volunteer initiative in your community, how you navigated complex work situations, context for the decisions you made, motivations behind your professional choices, difficult challenges you faced and overcame, how you acted as a leader at work and/or at school, etc.

No matter what you choose, each example should add something new about you to the mix.

In addition, business schools in general often prefer essays that incorporate good storytelling techniques . In the past, some of our most successful clients have been those who select a defining theme and connect their examples to this theme.

Finally, though you may choose to focus on a single example, the word count flexibility does give you space to mention several examples. If you choose to include several stories, make sure they connect to each other to present a cohesive image of who you are.

TOP TIP: You do not have to choose the multimedia format to be admitted. We have had many clients submit written essays only and be highly successful. However, if you feel a creative format better allows you to express yourself, go for it!

2.2. Video Essay Tips

personal essay ie

This year, IE has added a video essay component, designed to help them get to know you better. In their words:

“Kira Talent Assessment is a way for us to get to know you better. We are looking to learning more about your personality and communication skills.

During your Kira assessment, you will have to do a series of live questions, 2 in video and 1 in written format. The questions are about general topics around the values of IE: innovation, diversity, entrepreneurship and humanities.

You’ll be able to record your responses from the comfort of your home, and you can do so in your own time.”

We have written extensively on how to prepare for video essays. You can find our best tips here !

3. We Make Your Story Shine

One of the most common mistakes we see in MBA essays is that candidates fail to tell compelling stories . This is important because if your stories are not compelling, they will not be persuasive. At the same time, they must be backed by strong examples that establish a track record of success and prove to the admissions committees why you belong at their school.

Striking this balance between content and creativity can be tough, however, as succeeding means not only choosing the right stories but ensuring they are told in an optimal manner.

This is why our iterative developmental feedback process here at Ellin Lolis Consulting helps you mold your message through the application of our storytelling expertise until it reflects exactly what makes your profile stand out and show fit with your target program.

That’s the approach we took with our client Carlos , who was admitted to IE. In his words:

“I was looking for someone that could help me to achieve my goal of going to an MBA abroad, so a friend of mine recommended Ellin services. At first, I was a little suspicious because I thought that my only need was for someone to review my essays before sending them in the application process.

But, when I met Ellin, I understood that I had the wrong idea of how she could help me. She is not the basic consultancy services that will help you to go to your dream MBA reviewing your English, she is the person that will help you to understand what you are trying to achieve. This difference makes her services outstanding because to do that she had to understand my profile deeply.

That’s why I would recommend that anyone who is trying to get into a top business school, especially people who do not know exactly what they are looking for, call Ellin. Ellin opened my mind with so many good options besides the ones that I was looking for and helped me to build a plan to achieve my goal.”

Not only can you take advantage of our editing expertise through multiple edits – you can also benefit from it after a single review! If your budget is tight, our editors will be happy to help polish your text as much as possible and leave “bonus comments” so you can keep working on it on your own!

How to Craft IE’s MBA Personal Essay – Express Yourself

FortunaAdmissions

IE’s International MBA application asks you to “express yourself” in a single personal essay. IE states that this essay is a way for them to understand who you are, not just as a student but also as a person, and to help them grasp the value that you could add to their program.

The assignment is very broad, so my fellow Fortuna Admissions coach Lisa Beville and I have put together some tips to get you started and guide you through.  IE’s essay asks:

“What is the most important thing that you would like us to know that is not in your resume or application?

Take this as an opportunity to showcase your unique attributes and personality. There are three formats you can choose to express yourself: a video (maximum 3 minutes), a PowerPoint presentation (maximum. 10 slides), or a written essay (between 250–650 words).

This question is extremely open-ended and undefined, which allows you, the applicant, to take ownership for your story and shine in a way that feels most authentic to you. However, you might be wondering: Where do I begin? What do I share? And what format should I use?

Before tackling this, I first advise you to review the entire online application form to help pinpoint what is not said elsewhere. Besides basic data (contact info, academic info, professional experience, etc.), IE does not ask much except under “Professional Experience;” for each role you must briefly describe your responsibilities and achievements in only 250 characters.

So, in the application form and from your CV (using the IE required template), you will already be giving detailed information about your job experiences. Therefore, there is no need to restate these same facts again in your essay. Also, it’s important to note that IE does not ask about your extracurricular activities, hobbies and/or volunteer work.  So, what can you share about yourself that isn’t reflected in what you’ve included in the online form and your CV? Here are a few things to contemplate:

  • IE states there is no single answer on what their ideal candidate looks like. Though innovation and entrepreneurship are at the heart of the program, they are looking for a diverse range of candidates with interpersonal skills who are very motivated and creative and can successfully demonstrate their individuality.
  • The essay is a personal statement and should reflect you and your values. Consider what you want to share about yourself that illustrates a new perspective, beyond academics and professional experience. Consider sharing something you are passionate about. The open essay question allows for you to express your unique self, so consider it an empowering opportunity to showcase who you are and what you value.
  • Consider the format as a way to feature your creativity or concise writing abilities. There is no right answer or preferred choice of format. The only requirement is to create quality work that answers the question authentically.
  • Have fun! Candidates often feel pressure in applications, yet these are self-discovery processes and an avenue to clarify and communicate what you stand for. So, consider these flexible essay questions as a way to demonstrate the authentic you! I encourage you to enjoy the process!

Here are a few examples of what successful candidates showcased in their Personal Essay:

  • An applicant with experience in sustainable development showcased her city and life in terms of sustainable goals reached and how we can all take part in caring for our planet. Via video, she embodied her passion, pride, values and alignment while inspiring and empowering others to consider behavioral change for a greener planet.
  • An applicant, in a 500-word essay, showcased how and why he created a new volunteer initiative in his community, what the impact has been and how it continues to grow today.
  • An applicant, through a PowerPoint presentation, presented his leadership around a sports team he led in university, taking them to the championships for the first time. And then, to keep his passion alive, he created a company team at his workplace to increase morale, generate team building and to have fun with his peers.

Finally, don’t forget that IE also asks candidates to complete a Kira video component after you’ve submitted your application. During this exercise you will be answering at-random questions to demonstrate why you would be a valuable asset to the IE community.

As you are planning and crafting your essay, remember that you will have an opportunity to address additional skillsets, strengths and stories in your video response.

IE MBA Essays : Sample Essays & Writing Tips for Students

When it comes to applying for an MBA at IE Business School, your essays are not just a formality; they are a window into your personality, aspirations, and suitability for the program.

In a world where test scores often blur into uniformity, essays offer you the unique opportunity to speak directly to the admissions committee. They allow you to showcase not only your professional accomplishments and academic prowess but also your personal journey and the distinct qualities you would bring to the IE MBA community.

Understanding the Role of Essays in IE MBA Admissions

Essays: More Than Just Words In the admissions process for the IE MBA program, essays play a pivotal role. They are the narrative thread that can weave together the various elements of your application into a coherent and compelling story. While your resume may list your achievements, and your references can endorse your capabilities, it’s through your essays that you can breathe life into your application.

Differentiating Yourself in a Competitive Pool In the competitive realm of MBA admissions, where many applicants boast impressive resumes and high test scores, essays provide a critical differentiating factor. They are your chance to go beyond the quantitative aspects of your profile and reveal the person behind the numbers. The essays are where you can illustrate your ability to reflect, grow, and face challenges, showcasing the unique perspectives and diverse experiences you would contribute to the IE MBA cohort.

Breaking Down the IE MBA Essay Questions

Decoding the Essay Prompts IE Business School’s MBA application includes essay questions designed to delve deep into your motivations, personality, and future goals. Understanding the underlying purpose of these questions is crucial to crafting responses that resonate with the admissions committee.

Analyzing Each Question Each essay prompt serves a specific purpose. For instance, a question might ask about your career goals to gauge your clarity of thought and realistic understanding of how an MBA from IE can facilitate these goals. Another prompt might invite you to discuss a significant challenge you’ve overcome, aiming to highlight your resilience and problem-solving skills. It’s essential to not only answer these questions directly but to also reflect on what each question is trying to uncover about you as a candidate.

Strategies for Crafting Compelling IE MBA Essays

Reflect and Analyze The IE MBA essay prompt asks you to reveal something significant that is not reflected in your resume or application. This requires introspection and a deep understanding of your unique attributes and personality. Start by jotting down your key experiences, achievements, and passions, then reflect on what sets them apart and how they have contributed to your development. For instance, you might have been raised in a family that frequently traveled, influencing your worldview, or you might have switched industries, driven by a shift in your future goals. Use these experiences to showcase how your unique qualities evolved through your journey.

Presenting Your Unique Self While discussing your attributes, emphasize why you specifically chose them to characterize yourself and how they distinguish you from others. Consider how these traits could enrich the IE MBA program. Are you particularly empathetic, or do you possess an acute cultural awareness due to global exposure? Frame yourself as a candidate who can not only augment the program’s value but also potentially redefine its dynamics.

Common Mistakes to Avoid in IE MBA Essays

Avoiding Gimmicks and Repetition Sincerity is key in responding to the IE MBA essay prompt. Avoid becoming gimmicky or trying to appear overly creative. Focus on narrating your personal story and providing a dynamic image of yourself. With a maximum of 650 words, be succinct and avoid unnecessary buildup or repetition. Your story should be lively and provide sufficient context for the admissions committee to fully understand and appreciate it, but it should also be concise enough to allow you to share details that add color and individuality to your message.

Video Essay Tips If you choose to submit a video essay, remember to be concise, expressive, and mindful of presentation. Rehearse your script to become comfortable with its rhythm and flow, and let your genuine self shine through your words. Pay attention to your clothing, background, and lighting, and ensure your camera and microphone work smoothly. After recording, check for speech or body language errors and ensure the video link works correctly.

PowerPoint Presentation Tips For a PowerPoint presentation, pay attention to structure and content ordering. Aim for a word limit under 50 words per slide, using a clear typeface and double spacing. Start your presentation with an overview of what’s on your resume and application, and then move on to your unique personality trait or experience. Include photographs or videos from significant moments in your life, and ensure your presentation stands out from others.

Success Stories and Testimonials

Essay Example 1: Redefining Urban Living In one impressive essay example, an applicant envisioned the creation of community-centered residence buildings in their home country. They discussed how smart buildings could draw people out of isolation, fostering a network of social revitalization in urban areas. This vision, coupled with their country’s technological edge and entrepreneurial values, showcased their innovative mindset. The essay linked their ambition to IE’s curriculum in real estate and entrepreneurship, demonstrating how the MBA program could equip them with the skills needed to pioneer this innovative concept.

Essay Example 2: Harnessing the Power of Music Another applicant shared how singing and leading a Scouts troop in an economically disadvantaged area developed their leadership and community skills. They described forming a singing group that became a community sensation, winning competitions, and performing at local events. This experience not only showcased their creative talents but also their ability to inspire and lead, reflecting the values of the IE MBA program.

Essay Example 3: A Vision for FinTech An essay focused on the Financial Technology (FinTech) sector illustrated the applicant’s deep understanding of the industry’s challenges, such as regulation, data security, and risk management. They discussed their background in finance mathematics and operations research, aiming to use their IE MBA to build a career in mitigating risk exposures in FinTech. This essay effectively demonstrated how their unique background and IE’s program could synergize to address significant industry challenges.

Essay Example 4: Leadership in the Navy Another applicant recounted their experience in the Navy as an Operations Researcher and how they transformed their assistant’s work attitude and performance. The essay detailed their journey from considering a replacement to instead inspiring and motivating their assistant, demonstrating effective leadership skills. This story highlighted the applicant’s potential to bring valuable leadership experiences to the IE MBA community.

IE International MBA Essay Tips and Deadlines

IE business school MBA essay tips and deadlines

If you’re seeking an international education in an innovative new facility in the middle of a European city’s financial district, then you should consider applying to the International MBA program at Madrid’s IE Business School. Scheduled to open in September 2021, the new IE Tower skyscraper will host 64 classrooms – all with natural light and intelligent control and lighting and 4 of which boast a 360-degree structure. Beyond learning, the Tower’s 50,000 square meters will also house a heated swimming pool, gymnasium, sports courts, art exhibition areas, rehearsal spaces, and meditation areas.

IE sees the mission of its new building as not only training tomorrow’s business leaders but also serving as a hub for the development of entrepreneurship in Madrid, in particular featuring a Venture Lab and FabLab to foster student startups and design projects, respectively.

IE’s International MBA program is a one-year program that requires at least one 5-week immersive experience – Start-Up Lab for aspiring entrepreneurs, Business Impact Lab for students interested in hands-on experience in management or strategy with a corporation, Social Impact Lab for those interested in preparing for global not-for-profits and social enterprises, Techlab for those interested in the business potential of disruptive technologies, or a 7-11-week internship for students seeking experience in a specific sector, industry, or role.

IE International MBA application question

The IE International MBA application requires only one full-length “essay,” which applicants may either submit as prose (250-650 words) or as a presentation/visual format, a distinctive option at IE. The prompt is:

What is the most important thing that you would like us to know that is not in your resume or application?

Since the application form is in fact also very brief, very little will be revealed in it about how you lead nor what has uniquely driven you to the areas in which you have made an impact. Applicants may wish to share an example from their past in which they have adhered to IE’s values of innovation to drive impact and lead change. You may also have space to include how this experience has refined your goals and reasons to pursue the IE International MBA .

Since IE welcomes creativity, you may discover that a visual presentation rather than prose allows you to cover more ground. Don’t make the mistake of delivering 10 PowerPoint slides that are covered with words in an attempt to circumvent IE’s word limit. Instead, recognize that this submission is meant to capture the admissions committee’s interest in you, not summarize your entire life.

Video interview requirement

After submitting your application, applicants will be directed to a 20-30 minute assessment and video interview session with Kira Talent.

IE International MBA application timeline

IE offers two start dates for its International MBA program, one in September and another in January. With rolling admissions to each of these programs, any time of year is a great time to apply!

Essay Instructions

Ie business school essay prompt for jan 2024 intake, tips to write the essay effectively.

Please keep in mind that the text should be between 250-650 words and should be uploaded as one of the following:.pdf, .doc or. docx, font size 11, line spacing 1.5 or presentation .ppt, .pptx (Max size of file 6 MB)

What is the most important thing that you would like us to know that is not in your resume or application?

All your compositions must be absolutely original and specifically intended for this admission application. The compositions must be composed, executed and completed by you alone. Before submitting the links, check that they work correctly. The links must be active and available for consultation for a minimum of 18 months after the date the application is submitted.

How to Write the IE Business School Essay

The essay comes with a notably generous word limit of 650 words, giving you ample space to craft a narrative filled with depth and detail.

On the other hand, the essay’s generous length demands a strong command of language. Your ability to choose the right words, use elegant expressions, and thoughtfully arrange every element in your writing requires significant time and effort. However, mastering this challenge successfully showcases your skill in negotiation and communication, ultimately adding another layer of strength to your application.

The prompt requires you to introspect about your ‘unique attributes and personality’,which can encompass a wide range of aspects and varies individually. A helpful approach for outlining these attributes involves jotting them all down and then linking them to the experiences that have contributed to their development.

Next, delve into these experiences and reflect what sets them apart. For instance, you might have been raised in a family that travels across the globe, influencing your sense of identity.

Or, a shift in your future goals could have driven you to switch industries, or you may have hobbies that aren’t typically associated with those of your background. Utilize these experiences as the foundation of your response, showcasing how these unique qualities evolved through your journey, rather than directly stating the attributes themselves.

While discussing these attributes, underscore why you specifically chose them to characterize yourself. Highlight what distinguishes you from others by virtue of these traits. Moreover, consider how these attributes can enrich the program.

Do your experiences nurture exceptional interpersonal skills like humor or empathy? Are you culturally aware owing to global exposure, enabling you to navigate the intricacies of negotiation?

Frame yourself as a candidate poised not only to augment the program’s value but also potentially to redefine its dynamics. Illustrate how your presence might reshape the program, showcasing your potential to instigate positive transformation.

To approach this effectively, you’ll need to invest hours watching videos on similar content, create a well-structured speech outline, practice both alone and with a partner. The video essay demands strong body language, effective speaking skills, and a charisma that can only be experienced firsthand—its impact can vary, influenced by how individuals perceive you, resulting in somewhat variable standards.

Nevertheless, this provides an excellent opportunity to demonstrate to the admissions committee that you’re a confident candidate capable of effectively handling the challenge of an elevator pitch.

Given the 3-minute time limit for the video, roughly 400 to 450 words, it’s advisable to draft a basic script and rehearse it repeatedly to ensure a polished delivery. Though time-intensive, this process hones skills that prove valuable for the Kira video assessment as well. Furthermore, this format enables you to narrate your experiences using various inflections and expressions, enhancing your presentation.

Tips to create the video essay effectively

Depending on which aspect of your personality you want to highlight, pick 1 to 3 incidents to describe yourself. Opt for incidents you can summarize within 30 seconds. Then, discuss your takeaways and why the incident was significant. A streamlined draft ensures efficient use of your limited time and words.

Be expressive

In the video format, you can employ rhetoric, humor, or non-verbal cues like facial expressions and hand gestures. Aim to incorporate the first two for a semi-conversational tone, engaging the admissions committee. Use impactful phrases, famous quotes, or a motto as a structural guide. Be cautious not to choose overly specialized or abstract references. This approach creates a web of relatability in your speech.

Presentation matters

Prior to recording:

Besides dressing appropriately and minimizing distractions, pay attention to your clothing, background, and lighting. Make sure your camera and microphone work smoothly, without any technical issues. Have ample memory space to allow for multiple takes, ensuring you capture your best performance. This practice can also help alleviate any nervousness you might experience while n front of a camera.

During recording:

Rehearse your script several times to become comfortable with the rhythm and flow of your answers. This familiarity allows you to add your own personal touch. When delivering the speech, let your genuine self shine through your words. Radiate warmth, smile, and ensure you’re at ease. Integrating humor or asking rhetorical questions, usually difficult in essays, can enhance your delivery. However, be cautious to avoid filler words like ‘ummm,’ ‘oh,’ and ‘ah,’ as these can reflect on your confidence and thought flow.

Post recording

Ensure there are no speech or body language errors by seeking a second opinion from someone you know. This helps assess if you made a positive impact. Make multiple correctly named copies of the file for backup. If submitting a video link, securely store it on a reliable cloud space, verify link access, and ensure it opens without issues. Lastly, double-check video quality, as it may degrade during uploading, downloading, or rendering.

The PowerPoint format allows for creative expression and potentially reduces the reliance on written content by integrating visual elements like photographs—a potentially ‘fun’ approach to tackling the prompt.

If you’re adept with technology, skilled at summarization, and proficient at condensing your words effectively, this format might suit you. Keep in mind that the presentation is limited to 10 slides, and the inclusion of photographs, video, and audio elements is not restricted.

Consider using this format as a ‘show and tell,’ incorporating photographs or videos from significant moments that have shaped your life.

This grants the admissions committee a glimpse into your journey, helping them vividly envision your background and identity—ultimately putting a face to the content. It also allows you the chance to be candid and openly discuss your experiences.

However, creating a good PowerPoint presentation demands significant time for preparation, editing, and structuring, ensuring it stands out from others.

Pay attention to structure

Given the 10-slide limit, you have plenty of space to include information and visuals. Aim for a word limit under 50 words per slide, using a clear typeface like Times New Roman in size 12 and double spacing. Consider using templates from SlidesGo or Canva that offer clarity and don’t overshadow your content. Before working on the template, draft your content in Word to make revisions without worrying about text box placement issues.

Ordering content

Start your presentation with a slide that gives a brief overview of what’s already on your resume and application. Make sure to include a formal, well-lit, and recent photo of yourself.

Moving on, dedicate the next three slides to your unique personality trait or experience. Describe what it is—whether it’s an eidetic memory, synthesia, or a non-conforming lifestyle.

Provide a concise explanation of how you discovered or learned about it. Keep the language informative and engaging, taking inspiration from engaging fact phrasing found in the Dorling Kindersley series of the Big Book.

On the third slide of this series, discuss how you’ve applied these unique qualities in your life. Share moments that have added humor or interest to your experiences. As you proceed, explore other distinctive qualities you possess or elaborate on how you’ve applied these traits.

If possible, incorporate relevant photographs to visually complement your words. If you’re involved in hobbies, sports, or philanthropy, take a moment to describe how you approach these activities differently than others. Make sure not to just showcase them; emphasize what sets you apart. Look for simple ways to make the familiar unique, adding a fresh twist to the ordinary.

Writing Great Personal Essays: Really Useful Links by Ellen Brickley

The word ‘essay’ strikes fear into many hearts, with its connotations of heavy academic papers or boring school assignments. Essays don’t need to be dull – some of the best writing out there is in the form of personal essays. If you have an opinion or an experience, then you probably have an essay in you. Here’s a round-up of advice on how to get it out.

To start with, Michael Naghten Shanks gives a comprehensive and smart overview of the essay here on Writing.ie. If you’re not sure if essay-writing is for you, definitely check this out. Michael includes a list of his favourite essayists – I’d add Cheryl Strayed, Steve Almond, Lindy West and Sara Hepbola to his excellent list.

Essays don’t command the kind of popular attention that novels do, so it’s not quite as easy to know where to begin digging into reading in your chosen form. Salon.com chooses their top ten essays each year , and Longreads.com is a great way to find good narrative non-fiction (albeit longer than most essays) to get you thinking about the possibilities. Closer to home, check out Irish literary journals such as gorse and The Dublin Review – and keep these folk in mind when your essay is finished and looking for a launchpad into the wider world.

Once you’ve read some essays and gotten a feel for how they work, TheWriteLife has some thoughts on where to start with writing memoir, which translate very well to shorter forms of personal writing. Going deeper, Writers’ Digest covers some of the emotional aspects of writing about your life , as well as practical tips for producing a strong essay. CreativeNonFiction.org takes an innovative approach, with pictorial examples of how to structure an essay – fantastic for the visually-minded among us. The Huffington Post shares an editor’s view of the personal essay, with tips on how to impress editors reading your submission.

There are many outlets for personal essays both at home and abroad. Writing.ie features short memoirs, about both life in writing, in Mining Memories and Writing and Me . The annual Fish Short Memoir Contest runs each spring and this RTE Guide article gives a rundown of some of the major literary journals in Ireland – check them out individually for submission guidelines, which vary. More internationally, Entropy updates their site with submission opportunities every two months, which include outlets that accept essays. Finally, radio shows such as Sunday Miscellany often accept shorter essays.

Wishing you all the best of luck spinning your life into stories!

I thought my heavy bleeding was normal. Then I wound up in the emergency room

My mom was diagnosed with fibroids in her 20s.

Back then, she was an immigrant from Uganda with no money and no insurance. At the time, she didn’t have kids but wanted to have them one day. So, she went to a clinic after feeling a lump in her pelvis, worried it was cancer — and petrified she may never be able to conceive. It turned out to be fibroids .

Fast forward several decades and her daughter (spoiler: me) has great health insurance and reports on social and health disparities around the country — with a heightened focus on Black women’s health.

Yet, I still ended up in the emergency room because of the same condition she had. And I believe it was preventable.

Old photograph of Zinhle as a child with her mom.

I’ve complained of intensifying period symptoms since my period began at the young age of 9. I remember my mom coming to my elementary school to meet with my teacher, to explain my “situation” and that I would need special bathroom breaks to navigate my new normal. Yes, I was embarrassed.

As I got older, in my adolescence and young adulthood, embarrassment quickly turned to dread. Every month, I would miss school and social events with friends, and pack my purses with a medley of menstrual products — all in the hopes of assuaging my monthly menace. Every few years, my cycle and symptoms would change and worsen, too.

So, three years ago, after repeatedly complaining of heavy bleeding, I got an ultrasound, which revealed fibroids . In some ways, I was relieved.

“Maybe that’s why my periods have been so miserable!?” I thought.

But in many ways, I was still in the dark about my condition. I wasn’t given much medical guidance beyond: “You have fibroids, which is why your periods are heavy.”

Zinhle Essamuah

According to Johns Hopkins Medicine , up to 77% of women will develop fibroids at some point during their childbearing years — and only about a third of these fibroids are large enough to be detected, so women often go undiagnosed.

Despite various interventions — an IUD, on-and-off acupuncture, an intentional, clean diet and workout regimen — my periods continued to worsen . I raised the issue with my doctor but, after repeated dismissals, I started to question myself: Maybe this was all part of getting older? My cycles continued to be several days longer than average, and my pain intensified.

But I never experienced spotting or irregular bleeding. That is, until two months ago.

I was visiting my grandmother in rural Uganda when I started experiencing an abnormal episode of bleeding. (Talk about a relaxing vacation!)

I had just finished my period, so I should not have been bleeding. I was quite literally miles away from the nearest pad — and I didn’t dare dream of finding a tampon. But I’m a planner and not a panic-er, so from my little hotspot I booked an appointment with my OB-GYN for the morning I returned from my trip.

I arrived at the doctor’s office jet-lagged and still bleeding heavily after a week and a half. I couldn’t see the doctor, but the nurse conducted a physical exam, said she didn’t feel anything and referred me for an ultrasound, which was scheduled for four days later.

I never made it to that appointment. The next day, while anchoring my show, NBC News Daily, I was hit with a bout of fatigue. I assumed it was jet lag, but that evening it only worsened. By the time I got home, I was bleeding so heavily I had to put myself in the bathtub. I was passing clots.

Did I need to go to the emergency room?

Zinhle Essamuah in the hospital.

Thankfully, I texted that question to my friends, who answered with an immediate YES.

What I hoped would be a short visit in the emergency room quickly became an hours-long process filled with IVs, physical exams, ultrasounds and a smattering of questions. I was admitted at 10 p.m. and discharged hours later, at 3 a.m. The diagnosis I received? One of my fibroid had grown and dislodged my IUD.

In the next few days, as I waited for my first appointment with a fibroid specialist at NYU Langone’s Center for Fibroid Care, I did what any good journalist would do: I researched.

I stumbled upon a TODAY clip of Dr. Taraneh Shirazian . I was instantly surprised, excited and relieved — she was the doctor I had just scheduled an appointment with! The serendipity felt divine.

I was nervous when I got to my appointment with Dr. Shirazian. I learned one of my fibroids had doubled in size; it was as big as my entire uterus. If I didn’t take action, she told me, my symptoms would continue.

I walked into this health crisis knowing I had fibroids and some of the associated risks and potential treatments — but I didn’t know how many new options were available to me. I was pleasantly surprised by how many medicinal and surgical interventions exist for fibroids. I ultimately underwent one of the least invasive surgical procedures, a hysteroscopy, as a first step in treatment.

Today, a portion of my largest fibroid has been removed. It’s only the first step in my road to recovery, but here’s what I’ve learned so far.

Bring friends, don’t go it alone

When all my hospital visits began, I started a “UTERUS UNION” group chat with some friends. They provided the affirmations and accountability I needed. One friend even came to the ER with me and took notes.

Don’t be afraid to pause the discussion with your doctor, ask for clarification or to circle back to something.

Trust your gut

No one knows your body better than you. If a doctor is not listening to you or you feel unheard, seek another.

Track your cycle (meticulously)

Yes, it’s laborious, but track your cycle and the number of pads, tampons or cups you use. Knowledge is power and you can use that information to find solutions.

Know what’s normal and what’s not

It wasn’t until I found NYU Langone’s Center for Fibroid Care that I was ever told that bleeding through your clothes or regularly missing life events due to your cycle are abnormal. I wish someone would have told me that sooner, especially amid my years of repeated complaints.

Find moments of levity

An unabashed Beyonce fan, it was only fitting to name my largest fibroid “Cowboy Carter.” Beyonce is breaking genre barriers, and my submucosal fibroid broke layers too! Plus, they dropped in the same month.

I almost didn’t want to share this story. Isn’t talking about my uterus on national TV a turnoff? But through this process, I’ve learned I have nothing to be ashamed of. So much of my suffering was caused by my voice not being heard, or information not being shared. So I’m writing to change that — to speak up and share, in hopes that preventable pain is avoided — and women get the attention, support and advocacy they deserve.

Hillary Clinton’s next book is a collection of essays, touching upon everything from marriage to politics to faith, that her publisher is calling her most personal yet.

Simon and Schuster announced Tuesday that Clinton’s “Something Lost, Something Gained: Reflections on Life, Love and Liberty” will be released Sept. 17.

Among the topics she will cover: Her marriage to former President Bill Clinton, her Methodist faith, adjusting to private life after her failed presidential runs, her friendships with other first ladies and her takes on climate change, democracy and Vladimir Putin.

“The book reads like you’re sitting down with your smartest, funniest, most passionate friend over a long meal,” Clinton’s editor, Priscilla Painton, said in a statement.

“This is the Hillary Americans have come to know and love: candid, engaged, humorous, self-deprecating — and always learning.”

Clinton, the former first lady, U.S. senator and secretary and presidential candidate, will promote her book with a cross country tour. “Something Lost, Something Gained” comes out two months before Bill Clinton’s memoir about post-presidential life, “Citizen.”

Financial terms were not disclosed. Clinton was represented by Washington attorney Robert Barnett, whose other clients have included former President George W. Bush and former President Barack Obama.

It's time to stop delaying Steve Bannon's prison sentence, DOJ tells Supreme Court

Steve Bannon speaks, holding a microphone

WASHINGTON — Nearly two full years after Steve Bannon was convicted of two counts of contempt of Congress for defying subpoenas from the House Jan. 6 committee, federal prosecutors told the Supreme Court it's time for the former Donald Trump adviser to begin serving his four-month prison sentence.

“This Court recently denied a similar application for release by another defendant who engaged in complete defiance of a subpoena issued by the same committee that subpoenaed applicant,” Solicitor General Elizabeth Prelogar wrote in a court filing, referring to former Trump adviser Peter Navarro. “For reasons set forth in more detail below, the same result is warranted here.”

Navarro, who was sentenced to four months in federal prison on the same charges as Bannon, is finishing up his sentence after he reported to prison in March .

Wednesday's filing was in response to Bannon’s eleventh-hour bid asking the Supreme Court to allow him to stay out of prison and pursue further appeals. U.S. District Judge Carl Nichols had ordered Bannon to report to prison by next Monday after a dramatic hearing this month.

After Nichols’ ruling, a federal appeals court denied Bannon’s request to stay his prison sentence pending further appeal, meaning only the Supreme Court could pause the sentence. The high court had asked the Justice Department to file a brief laying out its view on the matter by 4 p.m. ET Wednesday.

Bannon responded to the Justice Department's filing in a brief later Wednesday and attempted to draw a distinction between himself and Navarro, calling the two cases “easily distinguishable.”

Bannon, via his lawyer at the time, had engaged in discussions with the House Jan. 6 committee about his subpoena and the related privilege issues, Bannon’s current lawyer, Trent McCotter, argued Wednesday. “Mr. Navarro, by contrast, failed to do this,” McCotter wrote in the court filing.

The Supreme Court could rule on Bannon's appeal at any time.

Bannon was convicted of two counts of contempt of Congress in July 2022 and was sentenced to four months in prison  in October 2022. The sentence was stayed pending appeals, and Nichols made the decision after a panel of federal appellate judges upheld Bannon’s conviction in May and federal prosecutors asked him to order Bannon to report to prison, saying there was no legal basis for a continued stay.

Bannon said in an earlier filing to the Supreme Court that he "relied in good faith on his attorney's advice" to ignore the House Jan. 6 committee's subpoena based on a potential assertion of executive privilege. But, as prosecutors noted in their previous sentencing memo, Bannon had long been out of the White House by the time period the House committee was interested in — when Trump tried to overturn the results of the 2020 presidential election and remain in power in the lead-up to the attack on the U.S. Capitol on Jan. 6, 2021.

Rep. Barry Loudermilk, R-Ga., who as chairman of the House Administration Committee's Subcommittee on Oversight has worked to undermine the work of the Jan. 6 committee, filed an amicus briefing with the Supreme Court in which he argued that Bannon's conviction was the result of an "invalid" prosecution.

House Republican leadership also announced that the Bipartisan Legal Advisory group voted 3-2 along partisan lines to file an amicus brief in Bannon's case before the D.C. Circuit. Speaker Mike Johnson, R-La., said in a statement Wednesday that GOP leadership believed that former House Speaker Nancy Pelosi, D-Calif., "abused her authority" when organizing the select committee.

House Democratic Caucus Chairman Pete Aguilar of California, who was a member of the Jan. 6 committee, called the House Republicans' move “shameful” and said their forthcoming briefing "isn’t worth the paper that it’s posted on.”
