A firefighter who died while tackling a blaze at a hair shop in Manchester was unlawfully killed by two 15-year-old girls who had started the fire deliberately, a jury has concluded.

Dad-of-two Stephen Hunt, 38, was found collapsed inside Paul's Hair World after entering the building alongside colleagues from Greater Manchester Fire and Rescue Service.

A jury concluded at his inquest that the fire was probably deliberately started by the two teenage girls who had been smoking cigarettes at the rear of the building in Oldham Street, in the Northern Quarter.

They then made a selfie video from the scene in which they admitted starting the fire, which developed at a fire door close to a cardboard storage cage.

The girls - now aged 17, who cannot be named for legal reasons - were arrested in connection with the fire which started at around 2.46pm on July 13, 2013.

In evidence to the inquest at Manchester's Civil Justice Centre, they both maintained that they had put out their cigarettes.

But one teen witness claimed that one of the girls had admitted that she had pushed a lit piece of paper through the doorway.

An expert fire investigation officer told the jury it was "unlikely" that a discarded cigarette had sparked the blaze, and it was more likely to have been a lit leaflet pushed under the doorway that ignited the cardboard.

The 11 jurors had been shown the selfie footage as part of the six weeks' worth of evidence which heard from over 50 witnesses.

In the video, one of the girls - identified only as Girl A can be seen to say, "we're not very happy because we started a fire we actually didn't mean to, seriously".

Girl B then adds, "oh god" before saying: "I put a flyer under. I didn't know it would set on fire. I saw a flame and ignored it."

She went on to be charged with committing arson and being reckless as to whether life was endangered, but prosecutors dropped the charge three days before the trial was due to begin citing that accidental ignition could not be ruled out.

However, senior coroner for Manchester Nigel Meadows said that he would now report his findings to the Crown Prosecution Service who will decide on what action if any should be taken.

Detective Superintendent Peter Marsh from Greater Manchester Police said: "Firefighter Stephen Hunt was a committed professional serving the public in a job that his family tell me he loved.

"He and his colleagues confront danger and go daily into situations most of us would walk away from, and we should rightly thank them for doing this on our behalf.

"This makes Stephen’s death particularly tragic and I cannot imagine the suffering and upset that his family and friends have gone through, and continue to go through. It is evident he is sadly missed but never forgotten.

"GMP investigated this case with support from Merseyside and West Yorkshire Fire Services and the Health and Safety Executive.

"This has been a long and complex investigation where we have examined the actions of individuals and organisations in order to establish the facts around Stephen’s death and I hope that now, at the end of the inquest, his family can fully understand what took place on that day and have some of the answers to the many questions they have had throughout the enquiry."

A BOLTON schoolgirl started the blaze that killed a firefighter by being "careless and thoughtless" in discarding a cigarette.

But the 16-year-old was cleared of arson because the fire was not started deliberately.

Firefighter Stephen Hunt died aged 38 on July 13, 2013, while tackling the blaze at Paul's Hair World in the Northern Quarter in Manchester.

A police investigation followed, involving interviews with dozens of firefighters, before the Bolton girl, aged 15 at the time, was charged with arson while being reckless as to whether life was endangered.

She was today cleared of any criminal wrongdoing in a hearing at Manchester Crown Court.

But Judge Michael Henshall described her act of discarding the cigarette as "thoughtless", and said its consequences were "terrible".

The girl had been standing outside a fire exit of the salon when she threw down a cigarette end, which was blown through a gap under the door by wind.

Some cardboard boxes that were stacked up against the door on the inside caught fire.

It was initially thought that a naked flame would have been needed to set fire to the boxes, leading to the conclusion that something was lit and pushed under the door.

But further investigations found that there was damage to the boxes through use.

Some may have had paper labels attached, while the application of parcel tape had caused the card to be thinner in places.

This meant investigators could not exclude the possibility that the cigarette caused the blaze.

A "chimney effect" could also not be excluded because it was a hot day and air was rushing through the gap under the door.

Judge Michael Henshall said: "This terrible and tragic case demonstrates the damage and potential damage from discarded cigarettes.

"This was discarded without any thought and as a result a fire started in circumstances which were very particular to the site in question.

"It resulted in extensive damage and the loss of life of a man who, as part of his employment as a firefighter, was there to protect people from fire.

"It was a terrible consequence for a thoughtless act."

He added: "The girl was in fact blameless as far as criminal law is concerned and guilty only of being careless."

Father-of-two Mr Hunt was one of 60 firefighters to tackle the fire at Paul's Hair World in Oldham Street, Manchester.

The ex-soldier got into difficulties inside the building and was taken to hospital but did not recover from his injuries.

He had been living in New Road, Radcliffe, and was based at Philips Park fire station in Manchester.

Alexander Leach, prosecuting, offered no evidence before Judge Henshall returned a verdict of not guilty.

An inquest for Mr Hunt will be held on a date yet to be fixed now the criminal case has ended.

I visited Pauls Hair world today, nervous because I knew my hair wouldn’t be straight forward to match up and being very particular as I want the hair extensions for my wedding so have to be perfect! I spoke with Georgina, she just rhymed numbers off of different colours and matched my colour perfectly! She’s good at her job! The shop was busy too and I didn’t feel under any pressure and wasn’t rushed. Staff all get on well and help each other! Really impressed! Thanks Georgina!

Fantastic products and service!

Stock the best hair- keep going back and forth to this company as i can never find better quality hair anywhere else! Staff who work there are so nice and helpful and the online help is also great! I had a total salon nightmare and…

I had a total salon nightmare and wanted to dye my hair from blonde back to brown and couldn’t get another salon appointment at short notice. I hadn’t left the house or worked in 2 days. I felt frantic. I went to Paul’s hair world and a member of staff (Sam from Manchester Arndale store) totally calmed me with her knowledge. She explained the process, selected the relevant products and then noted down step by step instructions for me and gave me confidence in my ability of fixing my hair myself. With her help, my hair is brown and natural looking. Sam was honestly the sunshine in my cloudy few days. THANKYOU! I can start living again (dramatic but accurate)

appalled at state of hair extensions!!

I am disgusted and upset at the disgraceful state of the supposedly 'human hair extensions' I bought from PHW Liverpool. I bought their own brand of hair approx £90 per pack, straight, caramel & brown colours mixed. After 2 weeks it turned into a hideous mess of matted knots! I hadn't done anything to do it and I've been having hair extensions for over 15 years. Then after desperate attempts to tame it with oils, conditioner etc NOTHING worked. This is NOT HUMAN hair and resembles and feels like dolls hair!! I regret to say this is not the first time it has happened, same experience 6 years ago when buying Premium Now curly hair. I thought stupidly they might of got their act together but they are even worse! Do NOT buy from here.

Everytime I change my hair the exstentions I get are always perfectly matched and really great quality. thin clip extensions 😒 whsts going on!!

Client of Pauls for over 6 years clip in real hair extensions are getting thinner I normally buy 3 pieces had to purchase 4 yesterday and had hair done today and 4 isn't enough feel ripped off.il go Nottingham to a shop there he gives u one big piece that goes right around ears and 2 thick pieces for £25!! Reason had to go Paul's its local to me.feel totally ripped off and hair doesn't look right !!! £53 lighter in my purse for p## poor clip ins..

Spread the word....Pauls hair world is crap

Please do not bother with this website, like many people have said, they are slow, rude and not worth the inconvienace! To top it all off they are liars who will tell you your order has been dispatched when it hasn't just to shut you up. The customer service is some of the worst ive recieved, these people do not care! £5.99 delivery charge is completely unjustified and they can't even fufil orders properly. I am someone who never leaves reviews on anything so the fact that i felt i needed to on this company says alot!

Responded quickly

This is not the first time l have ordered from Paul's as yet l have never had an order fullfiled as they always have sold out of what l want (hence the 4*) but the service is 5*+ they always let me know asap via email and refund as quickly as electronically possible.Jade is pleasant if her emails are anything to go by, though we've never met/spoke.l will try again to make a purchase.Must be good if l can never get what l want because they have sold out. An idea may be for them to offer an alternative if what the buyer wants is no longer availabile.

been going for years (Chelsea is fabulous)

I have been going to Paul’s hair world for about 7/8 years now for different types of extensions (clip ins/ bonds /weaves etc and have always been happy with the colour match (I have natural hair so it is sometimes hard to match). Appalling products and customer service

Appalling products and customer service. I bought some beauty works extensions on 15 November 2017 and spent approximately £300. Within a week 20 pieces had fallen out and needed replacing. Worst still within just 5 weeks the hair has shedded at least 50% and knots itself constantly. The hair is appalling quality and when I contacted Paul’s World asking for a refund they were not interested. I’ve sent them photos of the hair both before and after and cannot believe they are happy to sell such poor products to customers. They are hiding behind a 30 Day manufacture returns policy however this hair is not fit for purpose and is faulty and as such will not let this drop as I don’t want other customers treated like this.

As previously explained, your concerns were not raised within the required returns period, and photographs are not proof of any fault. It is now too late to fully test your extensions as normal wear and tear may have occurred, making it difficult to identify a manufacturing fault. We have however offered you the opportunity to return the hair for a visual assessment so that the manufacturer can try to identify the reasons why the extensions have not met your expectations and offer advice for future maintenance. This could be due to the aftercare procedure or products used for example, however you have chosen not to accept this offer. bad customer service

I went to the arndale manchester paul hair world to buy some hair dye. I took it to the till and noticed there were too many staff with not much to do.. there were 3 staff members stood behind the till and chatting about whether 2 eat some cake so after awkwardly standing there I asked loudly if they accept card payment so I could get their attention and I could pay. They looked at me as if I shouldn't have interupted them she hurried my payment through and carried on chatting...its a good shop with lots of hair options Just think a bit more customer aknowledgment would help.

This is the third time I am making an…

EXCELLENT CUTOMER SERVICE AND PRODUCT

Absolutely great customer service yesterday in the Oldham street store. Matched hair perfectly and recomended a lovely conditioning mask. The sales assistant could not be more helpful. The staff within the store are very…

The staff within the store are very helpful, always provide accurate help in regards to choosing the correct hair and will always make sure you're happy with the purchase. The only thing that downgraded my store visit was using the salon above. I had booked an appt and was told on the day no appt was available and they could not fit me in. However, I understand there was a mistake with the booking but overall great customer service.

I don't have much to add here as I actually popped in to get something for my wife - no she isn't going to be sporting an afro or dreads soon, but she did want some pink hair dye picking up! They sell fake hair, wigs, have a beauty and hair section and all sorts of beauty products - you can tell from this description that I'm not massively up on this theme... This is the newer store after the previous one was destroyed by fire and it does look very modern and well laid out. The staff were very helpful guiding me straight to what I needed - a very easy visit, in and out!
