I doubled my salary by switching to travel nursing. I traveled the country and grew my career, but it came at a cost.

This as-told-to essay is based on a conversation with Louie Chan, a 30-year-old nurse in the Bay Area. The following has been edited for length and clarity.

When I went to college in 2012, I couldn't decide what to major in. My Filipino parents emphasized the importance of a stable job because it would bring freedom. This was important to them because we didn't have much money growing up.

I decided to pursue nursing , a career path common among Filipinos . It turned out to be a perfect fit for me. When I graduated from nursing school in 2017, I took my first job as a telemetry nurse in southern California, earning $37 an hour.

After two years of working at that same hospital, I grew my wages to $45 an hour, which was below the average hourly rate for nurses in California. We didn't have a nursing union at that hospital to ask for better wages and got very small yearly raises.

I started travel nursing in 2020 to earn more

When the COVID-19 pandemic started, I heard there was a bigger need than usual for travel nurses . I decided to take a leap of faith, leave my family behind, and move to Texas for my first gig as a travel nurse. The agency I signed up to work for placed me in Texas. I didn't have a say in where I went for that first assignment.

I was motivated to sign up because the pay was extraordinary. I worked six days a week and did 12-to-14-hour shifts. While this was more than my usual schedule, I was making almost triple my former amount — I went from earning $45 an hour to around $121 an hour.

I worked at that job for a couple of months and then returned to California to rest for a few weeks. After that, I spent two years working as a travel nurse at different hospitals. I doubled my salary, grew my career, and regained my passion for the job.

A typical travel nursing job lasts 13 weeks, and the rates fluctuate

Hospitals bring in travel nurses because they're short-staffed. Most travel nursing opportunities are for 13 weeks at a specific location. After that, you can extend your contract for another 13 weeks or longer, depending on the hospital's needs.

I found open positions through travel-nursing agencies. When I returned from working in Texas, I worked at Cedars-Sinai in Los Angeles and Stanford Hospital in Palo Alto. As COVID-19 got worse, my pay as a travel nurse got higher. I made anywhere from $6,000 to $9,000 a week.

Usually, I worked six days on and eight days off. I liked the travel nursing schedule because it improved my work-life balance . I used my free time to travel around the cities I lived in and start a side hustle as a content creator .

Because travel nurses live away from home, we're given a tax-free stipend that covers housing and meals. I'd usually find an inexpensive hotel or rent a short-term apartment near the hospital.

The best part of the job is getting to live in new cities

As a travel nurse, you must be a fast learner because you enter a new hospital and start working almost immediately. It's a job for people who love being independent and can quickly pick up on the hospital's work culture and policies.

I loved the flexibility. I'd work at one hospital for 13 weeks and then take a month off to rest or travel before starting a new job elsewhere.

There are travel nursing jobs all over the world. I've always been interested in living in another country like Japan or Australia and would consider taking a travel nursing job abroad. If you're a nurse who wants a change of scenery, this is a dream opportunity, but there are some downsides.

It can be quite lonely

When working in a new place, you might not have the time to get to know people or make friends . When my shifts were done, I'd usually explore the city on my own, and every now and then, I'd make friends at work who I'd hang out with during my stay.

Some other nurses weren't nice to travel nurses because they knew we were making more money than them. I remember getting the worst patient assignments because I wasn't part of the core staff. There were also times when a group of nurses ordered food and invited everyone on the floor except the travel nurses. I didn't let their attitudes or comments bother me.

In other hospitals, the nurses were so grateful to have help because they were overworked and overwhelmed by the number of patients. In those jobs, I felt like I was making a difference.

Look into the tax implications of the job before deciding to become a travel nurse

People get into travel nursing and think they can give up their apartment, pack a suitcase, and live on the road. Travel nurses get tax-free stipends because the IRS assumes they're duplicating their expenses by paying for housing at home and where they live for the job.

Before committing to being a travel nurse, speak with a CPA or tax advisor to understand how to keep those tax-free stipends so you don't accidentally commit tax fraud. While I was a travel nurse, I was still making monthly payments on a house in California.

My days as a travel nurse are over

I'm now a full-time nurse coordinator in the Bay Area and enjoy working at my current hospital. I don't see myself pursuing travel nursing in the US again because I made over $200,000 last year and it's a healthy working environment. I also still make content on the side and may one day focus on that.

My experience as a travel nurse taught me that I have more nursing knowledge and critical care skills than I thought. It also taught me that I can live independently away from home.

Regardless of your career, you can't wait around and hope for a raise. Sometimes, you need to be the one to take bold actions and get paid what you deserve.

Sales taxes on everyday purchases can quickly add up. In California, Indiana, Mississippi, Rhode Island, and Tennessee, there is a sales tax of 7% or more on purchases. But in Alaska, Delaware, Montana, New Hampshire, and Oregon, there is no sales tax.

The cost of monthly utility bills can put a dent in your pay check. Nebraska, North Dakota, and South Dakota all have lower monthly electricity payments, while California, Hawaii, Massachusetts, and Connecticut are at the top end of average monthly electric prices.

Nurses say UVM Medical Center is offering far less than they need for pay

The University of Vermont Medical Center's nurses voted by an overwhelming majority last week to authorize a strike if they're not able to reach an agreement on a new contract with the UVM Medical Center, the president of the nurses' union said Tuesday in a press conference outside union headquarters on Colchester Avenue.

"We do not take this lightly," Deb Snell said. "Our goal is still to come to a fair contract."

Snell said 90% of the union's 1,900 nurses voted last week and 85% of those 1,700 nurses − a supermajority − voted to authorize a strike if needed.

"We know what we need to keep nurses here in Vermont and to bring nurses here," she said. "We need the hospital to truly listen to us."

Later in the afternoon, Dr. Stephen Leffler, president and chief operating officer of UVMMC, held a Zoom call with reporters to give the hospital administration's perspective on the contract talks.

Leffler said that while it's the hospital's goal to offer as much as they can to get a contract done, the union's current demands on pay would require about a 30% increase in commercial health insurance rates over the next three years, or "significant cuts" in the services UVMMC is able to offer.

"We're trying to manage the best that we can, hearing from the Green Mountain Care Board and Vermonters to keep health care costs as low as they possibly can be," Leffler said. "We want to keep insurance rates as low as possible and not eliminate services for the population we serve."

The Green Mountain Care Board regulates major areas of the health care system in Vermont, including hospital budgets.

Union says it wants 40% pay increase; hospital is offering 9%, or 17%, depending on who you ask

The two sides are very far apart on pay. The union said it's asking for a 40% increase over the three-year term of the contract. Snell said the hospital is offering 9% by the union's reckoning, although she said the hospital maintains its offer is 17%, taking into account factors the union is discounting.

"What they are offering also is if we settle by this Friday, they'll throw in another 2% automatically, and it's like, well, we'll see about that," Snell said.

The union's bargaining team has done its research, according to Snell, who said nurses in Portland, Oregon, where the cost of living is only 3% higher than in Burlington, start at $47 per hour while the nurses at UVM Medical Center start at $35 per hour. The bargaining team includes Snell.

"Right now we're very far apart," Snell said. "We're very hopeful they understand. After the strike last time we told them, 'This is not enough to bring nurses here or keep nurses here,' and well, we were right. No one could have predicted COVID, but even without that, we are just not getting the nurses here that we need."

Leffler said the union is actually asking for a 46% increase in wages, when taking into account a 2% annual increase that is part of the 24 "steps" a nurse can climb to reach the highest wage the hospital pays. Leffler said that the 2% increase per year tied to the steps is money the nurses are not including when they say they're asking for a 40% increase over three years.

"That 2% is money we have to budget and spend," he said. "The total new dollars we have on the table for the nurses is 17%."

Nurses authorize five-day strike, say previous two-day strike was ineffective

The nurses went on a two-day strike in 2018 before settling on a new contract with the hospital in which both sides gave ground on their bargaining positions. Snell said Tuesday that nurses authorized a five-day strike this time around, because the two-day strike in 2018 didn't make as much of an impact as they hoped.

"We feel we are stronger this time, we are more committed," she said. "We know our value, we know our work and we know they need us."

Leffler said the hospital is preparing for a strike and he's confident it can provide high-quality care over the five days of the strike, but he "truly hopes we don't have that situation."

"We have a comprehensive plan in place to bring in nurses from other places to work here and limit some services, and we have a significant number of (travel nurses) right now, who wouldn't be going on strike and would provide some continuity of care," he said.

Travel nurses are hired through third-party agencies to fill the gaps in a hospital's nursing staff and have been a long-standing point of contention for the union nurses at UVMMC, as travel nurses are typically paid more than permanent staff.

Leffler said if a contract isn't done by July 1, the hospital will have to make payment to the agency providing travel nurses to ensure they're available to cover for a strike. A federal mediator will join the negotiations over the next couple of days.

"We are committed to do our very best to get a contract done before the first of July if possible to make those dollars go to our nurses," he said.

The 2024 NBA draft will commence on Wednesday , June 26 at 8 p.m. ET. Much has been made of this draft's lack of top-end talent, but the perceived lack of upside does not change any of the details. The draft will happen, somebody will be fortunate enough to get selected first overall, and the landscape of the league will be forever altered. Glad you asked! The rookie wage scale assigns a limit on how much rookies can get paid before they step foot on a professional court for the first time. The mechanism was introduced in 1995 because longtime NBA vets were getting upset that unproven rookies were negotiating contracts richer than what they might receive from their own teams after years of service.

The peak example, and the one that led to changes in the CBA, came in 1994. Glenn Robinson was selected first overall and signed a 10-year deal worth a whopping $68 million. Contracts of that length were just as unheard-of then as they are now, and it's a huge amount of money for a rookie. The hammer was brought down swiftly and Joe Smith, the No. 1 pick in the 1995 draft, signed a three-year contract worth $8.3 million in total.

The salary numbers have increased dramatically since then, but the concept remains the same. Rookies across the league, no matter what team they're drafted to, have their salaries predetermined with no wiggle room. The higher they are picked, the more that predetermined salary is. The salaries for each year are determined by the overall salary cap; the wage scale ties the value of all rookie contracts to a percentage of the salary cap for the upcoming season.

How Much Does the No. 1 Pick Make?

The natural next question is how much that rookie wage scale is in 2024. According to Spotrac, the first overall pick in the 2024 draft is expected to sign a contract worth $57 million over four years. Their rookie season, the player is expected to make $12.6 million.

As a reference point, that puts the No. 1 pick in the same range as Toronto Raptors journeyman Kelly Olynyk ($12.1 million salary) and sturdy Dallas Mavericks center Daniel Gafford ($12.4 million).

NBA Draft Pick Salary

After the No. 1 overall pick, the salaries and overall value begin to slide. How Much Do Second-Round Picks Make?

As your keen eye undoubtedly observed, the above table only concerns the first round of the NBA draft. What about those who go in the second round?

The rookie wage scale does not apply to players picked outside the first 30 selections. Once Pick 31 is on the clock, teams are permitted to sign these players to whatever contracts they'd like. Since the players who go in the second round are not seen as assured NBA-caliber talents the way their first round brethern are, that means second round picks receive contracts far less favorable.

Usually second round picks sign contracts that contain little or no guaranteed money. Many will sign two-way contracts that allow their teams to split their time between the NBA and the G League.

For example, Jalen Pickett was picked No. 32 overall in the 2023 NBA draft and signed a four-year $8.2 million contract with the Denver Nuggets that came with $5.8 million guaranteed. Denver clearly thought highly of him. Conversely, the last pick in the second round of last year's draft, Chris Livingston, got a four-year deal from the Milwaukee Bucks worth $7.6 million in total and included $3.01 million guaranteed.
