Movie review: talakjung vs tulke.

movie review of talakjung vs tulke

There are very few Nepalese movies that are able to sustain your patience throughout. Often Nepalese movies are crowded with unfit songs, physics-defying outrageously hilarious fight encounters, and anachronistic romance scenes. Defying these “mainstream” movies, there come occasionally some fresh, cinematographically alluring, good storytelling movies based on firm scripts that manage to pull audiences; among these –however – a little fraction manages to sustain the initial enthusiasm throughout. Talakjung Vs Tulke is one such movie. I would be lying if I say I was not tempted to open another tab during my movie time. However, I think I did so because I was not in the theater/cinema hall among the enchanted crowd. I had autonomy to enlarge a little boredom (say, a dissatisfaction with a scene) to two-minute wastage on scrolling Facebook statuses. I wish I could maintain that spillages enthusiasm for the scenes that followed my apparently “a little boring” scene –for the scenes after that were not only interesting, but they, moreover, defined the existence of the boring part.

Talakjung Vs Tulke is based on a fictional story during Nepal’s Civil War (1995-2005). The movie, nearly 4/5 th part, is based in a rural mountainous district in Mid-western Nepal, where people still have no access to road and where there are still unspoken domination of the class system, a rhetoric which the Maoists insurgents used to recruit the dissatisfied youths of lower socio-economic statuses. The movie shows how one landlord wilts his “power” and whip “the lineage domination” narratives handed over to him from his Father to exploit the innocent, uninformed villagers, who, with no economically diverse jobs, had to resort to the farming on the landlord’s land for the petty survival. Talakjung (Khagendra Lamichhane), the lead actor, in the movie is shown as relatively less serious guy; the people reactions on him borders as mentally abnormal. He speaks deliberately, without much thinking, and is insanely in love with a girl, Richa Sharma, who works as a laborer at the landlord house along with her lover Shrishank Mainali. Talakjung seems to be spending a very casual normal life – working as a laborer for construction of road, trying to win Richa, drinking in a Bhatti, hanging with his friends – in the village until the Maoists activities intensify and his cohort of friends leave him, because at the very first place they are not interested in the friendship and Talakjung was just a “beer” partner for them, to join the rebels who promises sweeping changes in the village and basically free them from the centuries long oppression of the landlord. Talakjung, a less serious guy and whom everybody takes less seriously, is caught in a dilemma where he belongs. He goes around the village telling people that he is a Maoist rebel and he (and his friends) will free them from the oppression. Smelling new activities going around, the landlord and his son ears fan out. They call Talakjung over a Masubhat dinner, where they feed him the excess of alcohol to blurt out what activities are secretly going out. Talakjung, unknowingly, slips the fact that one of his friends, who works under the landlord, is an important member of insurgents. What follows then is a rather complicated plot, which sounds extremely plausible given how events in the real Civil War actually went through.

The mental war then is between the landlord and the insurgents. The landlord does whatever he can in his disposal to weaken the insurgents’ base. The landlord employs three people to kill Talakjung’s friend. Richa Sharma (the crush of Talakjung), knowing the situation is terribly spinning out of the control, fears that the next victim could be Talakjung himself, whom many demeaningly call Tulke. This is actually surprising given the fact that until the scenes following up to that feeling, Richa seemed barely interested in Tulke. (In the later scenes, she however, confirmed that she had always hold sympathies for Tulke.) By making him a culprit for the alleged rape over her, she successfully manages to evict him from the village.

Tulke, not knowing what to do, catches a bus, which takes him to Kathmandu. There he meets Don Dayahang Rai, a murderer, thief and extortionist protected by the politicians. Though now under the Don with the “crime insulation” to do whatever he likes, our Tulke barely changes character wise, except being skillful to snatch women’s chain from the bike or extorting money from a businessman in a struggling Nepali. Over a fatal encounter later, Dayahang Rai and his another gang member are shot dead and the two others are caught by the police. Tulke, who during the encounter had gone for extortion and luckily manages to escape encounter, is now homeless and friendless, again . He is emotionally broken and does not know where to go. Having suffered a rape charge and an eviction from the village from the crime he never committed, he decides to go back to his village, not to prove he was never wrong, but moreover to taunt the financial progresses (with the extortion money) he had achieved. By then, the civil war is at peak and many of his friends are either dead or are part of the Maoists rebel groups. Again, he feels disoriented and lacks that sense of belonging. The landlord, on the other hand, sweats profusely over the repeated monetary demand of the rebels, who use him as a milking cow to financially run their insurgency. After the insurgents capture the landlord’s last remaining land, the landlord’s son, dissatisfied over his father supposedly “wrong steps”, decides to part away and join the insurgents instead in a hope that joining the insurgents would bring back his land. Not surprisingly, they get their land back.

However, the story gets enchantingly interesting as the plot progresses and lots of secrets are revealed in a flash-back style. The landlord’s son is caught by the police for allegedly having a gun and Maoists’ ideology pamphlets. Only at the end do we realize that those Police men were actually Maoists themselves and the secret spies of the landlords were none other than Richa and Shrishank, the laborers informing the insurgents of the landlord’s every steps (Richa had kept the gun under the pillow of the landlord’s son). At the end, the real Police try to launch an oppressive encounter against the Maoist. The battleground becomes the landlord’s house. When the insurgents, led by the Shrishank – who, throughout his life was a laborer to the landlord, comes to the porch where the landlord sit grieving over his son’s death, the Policemen wait them in the bush near the house. The gunfire starts all of sudden. Richa, who is in the landlord’s house then, successfully manages to evade the repeated gunshots to go to the Tulke’s house. However, that successful eviction for other insurgents become next-to-zero impossible as every one of them at the landlord’s house (except the landlord’s daughter-in-law) are killed in the encounter, including the landlord whom Shrishank shoot at the back.

The firing scenes seem so surreal. As for my Civil War experience, I remember how these gunshots were so frequent and destructive. One of my cousin brothers, who during the civil war was employed in Illam, once told me how these encounters led to the discriminate killings of other civilians, who could not escape the gunshots even hiding under the bed, and how these encounters had collateral ramifications as clearly depicted in the last scene. When the sun eventually rises the next morning, the Police carry search operation for other Maoist combatants. Richa, by then, already leaves the house, leaving Tulke with a bag full of pamphlets and grenades. The poor Tulke is caught then.

Talakjung Versus Tulke is a must watch movie, especially if your faith in Nepali movies is eroding. Though you may be displeased with the part of the plot – like Tulke’s eviction to Kathmandu rarely adds much to the story build-up, you, nevertheless, will be energized by so many other good things like eye-catching cinematography, slow but healthy plotline, mid-western accents (ke gareko –kya garyinta, manche – munche) surreal encounter scenes and amazing artistic display by the actors, including the supporting ones. This is a story of a guy who fails to convince people to call him Talakjung, not Tulke. This is a story of people who fights over the years of oppression, only to see how the war left or build any social framework intact to continue. This is a story of transformation, or let’s say a more of a transition. A failed transition – something which Nepal is struggling now. Nischal Basnet, the director, deserves an applauding credit for showing things as they are. No wonder, he has successfully managed to carve an impressionable niche in the industry in very less time because he knows how to know make good, honest movies.

Talakjung Vs Tulke Movie review, casting Dayahang Rai, Nischal Basnet, Richa Sharma

Talakjung Vs Tulke is a story about a common villager, living in a Nepalese mountain village. A person who is struggling to reclaim his lost aristocratic identity and is humiliated everyday by people around him.

Cast : Khagendra Lamichane , Dayahang Rai , Richa Sharma , Sushank Mainali , Rabindra Singh Baniya, Prakash Ghimire Director : Nischal Basnet Story : Khagendra Lamichane Screenplay : Khagendra Lamichane , Nischal Basnet

Talakjung Vs Tulke is a story about a common villager, living in a Nepalese mountain village. A person who is struggling to reclaim his lost aristocratic identity and is humiliated everyday by people around him. He is a common laborer who desperately seeks recognition and respect, ‘Tulke’. Oops sorry, ‘Talakjung Singh Thakuri’ or ‘Babu Saheb’. The story takes place in time of Nepalese Civil War which lasted around 1996 – 2006 in Nepal.

The Nepalese Civil War was an armed conflict between government forces and Maoist fighters in Nepal which lasted from 1996 until 2006. The war was launched by the Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) on 13 February 1996, with the aim of overthrowing the Nepalese monarchy and establishing a ‘People’s Republic’. It ended with the Comprehensive Peace Accord signed on 21 November 2006. Nepal’s decade-long civil war left more than 16,000 dead, with rebels and security forces accused of serious human rights violations including killings, rapes, torture and disappearances. Talakjung Vs Tulke is another masterpiece by Nischal Basnet. I was really impressed by how he took care of every small detail in the movie. It was remarkable journey from start to finish, a new taste. I have known Nishal Basnet for breaking trends in the movie industry, and yet again he has done so with another flawless movie. This movie doesn’t have dramatic dialogues of Rajesh Hamal and breathtaking action of Nikhil Upreti, but has a very powerful script with sensible dialogues and fight scenes. Besides the story, Khagendra Lamichhane was astounding from start till end. He carried out each dialogues and performance very well and deserves credit for how beautiful the movie has become. Dayahang Rai’s special appearance was very short and sweet. There was however only one song, which was not the best.

Tulké – a simpleton day-laborer in a Nepalese mountain village –struggles to reclaim his lost aristocratic identity while a violent revolution disrupts every aspect of village life. Humiliated everyday by everybody around him, Tulké desperately seeks recognition and respect. Instead, he is falsely accused by the woman he loves and forced to flee from his ancestral village. When the city corrupts him and teaches him how the treacherous accumulate and wield power, he returns to his village to avenge himself against people who have wronged him and his family. He becomes a lackey to the revolutionaries in the village, and because he refuses to wrong those he loves, finds himself ensnared in a web of deception and violence, leading to a tragic conclusion for everybody.

It’s a movie that you probably wouldn’t have imagined and a kind of movie that you cannot taste in foreign movie. A must watch movie for all who can understand Nepali.

‘Talakjung vs Tulke’ is an odd case. It’s by no means terrible and it certainly gets better towards the end, but it just didn’t sit well with me because I started to take against it during the first act, which is really bizarre. It just doesn’t seem to know what exactly it wants to be. On some levels it clearly wants to be a broad comedy and has this horrible, overbearing comedy wack-wack score, but at the same time it’s staggeringly unfunny. Meanwhile it has designs of being this epic drama about the differences between urban…

There are not enough words to explain how amazing this movie is. There's only 5 great movies in Nepali cinema and this movie has the top spot. Showcase of Nepali culture is on point. Khagendra Lamichane's writing is on another level. He is one of the best writers that we have. His acting 11/10. I saw some 3 star rating & some 2 stars too and there's one thing I'd like to tell, if you didn't experience what this movie revolved around in real life or if you don't know the history then you'll feel like there's nothing much in the movie. It's like "if we vibe, we vibe". Maoist war in Nepal lasted for about 12 years. Many suffered, many died. Those who could get their hands dirty rose to a peak and those who couldn't, well they only suffered. Amazing movie. 10/10.

Just feel like the writers did not put enough thought into this film. The story is decent but the characters in this movie are so out of place. I'm not a big fan of movies that have a fixed villan and hero but there is absolutely no character growth here, tulke is still tulke to me...
