A lot of universities and post-secondary institutions have specific requirements for binding. Before printing or binding your thesis, find out if the institution has any guidelines.
That is why we would like to guide you through on the best type of binding to use, which will be entirely dependent on the final paper type being submitted.
The highest quality binding any thesis can go through is leather book binding . It comes with a leather-look solid cover, which makes a thesis appear chic and stylish. You can choose between a bookmark, corner protectors or customized embossing. Either of them should make your paper look more sophisticated.
Recommendation: The following are some of the final papers perfect with leather binding
• Dissertation • Research paper • Master’s thesis • Bachelor’s thesis
Thermal binding happens to be the most versatile among all bindings. Its front cover is transparent, causing the title of your research paper to be brought to the forefront instantly. More so, it also comes with a leather-look at the back of the cover, in the color of your choice.
Recommendation: Generally, minor research projects are best presented in thermal. If you will also need print-outs of the final paper, this type of binding is perfect.
Are you looking to make your paper more attractive and standout? If so, softcover will be the ideal choice. This type allows you to design your cover however way you desire. It enables you to use different logos, fonts, wild designs and pictures of choice. When you choose this type of binding, you can let your creativity flow in any direction. Given that it is a research paper, you want to keep it less cluttered and completely professional.
Recommendation: Use Softcover for any thesis. Note, however, this type limits you to a specific number of pages. For a comprehensive dissertation, it may not be an ideal choice.
This is the simplest form of binding. It is closely similar to thermal, given that its back cover has a leather-look and also comes with a transparent front cover. The difference is that spiral binding is not glued. Here, your paper is held with spirals. Note that spiral comes in two types: metal and plastic.
Recommendation: For small projects, spiral is the perfect choice. It is not considered right for major papers such as research papers or dissertations.
Below is a table for all bindings, designed to offer you an overview to help you decide on the best one for your thesis or the final paper.
• | • | • | • | • | |
The most elegant and sophisticated way to bind is leather. For a major final paper such as Bachelor’s thesis, Master’s thesis or an essay, it is the perfect choice. We do not recommend leather for smaller final papers.
• | • | • | • | • | |
Of all the types used to bind, thermal is the most versatile. It is the best for final papers. If you are also looking for several print-outs, it is the sleekest and most cost-effective choice.
• | • | • | • | • | |
Because Softcover allows you to design your cover any way you wish, it is the best for creative study programs. Understand, however, that it has a limit to the number of pages you can bind, meaning it is not always the absolute choice for final papers. For a dissertation, you will have to look for another option.
• | • | • | • | • | |
If you are looking for the perfect binding choice for smaller projects, spiral is your go-to solution. It can also be used in final papers such as the term papers or the research project. However, if yours is more substantial in length, think around another option. |
When it comes to printing and binding your thesis, you can choose between your local copy shop or an online service provider. We recommend beginning by looking for an online printing provider. Doing so allows you to make your orders from your comfort zone and saves you valuable time, plus, they usually have good offers. Understand, however, you are exposed to winning and losing on the online platform.
In our research, BachelorPrint stood out. We found the service providers to be the go-to authorities in printing and are perfect if you also need to bind. It is an online printing service for students known to offer high-quality bindings. Because they offer free express shipping, you can be sure to get your thesis soon after printing and once it has been bound. Ensuring nothing Goes Wrong in your Thesis PrintingBecause writing and printing a thesis is a major investment, the tips provided here should ensure that everything goes smoothly. Where you will have your paper printed and bound is all up to you; whether you choose to go to an online printing service or identify an actual copy shop. Dissertation & Thesis Outline | Example & Free TemplatesPublished on June 7, 2022 by Tegan George . Revised on November 21, 2023. A thesis or dissertation outline is one of the most critical early steps in your writing process . It helps you to lay out and organize your ideas and can provide you with a roadmap for deciding the specifics of your dissertation topic and showcasing its relevance to your field. Generally, an outline contains information on the different sections included in your thesis or dissertation , such as:
In the final product, you can also provide a chapter outline for your readers. This is a short paragraph at the end of your introduction to inform readers about the organizational structure of your thesis or dissertation. This chapter outline is also known as a reading guide or summary outline. Table of contentsHow to outline your thesis or dissertation, dissertation and thesis outline templates, chapter outline example, sample sentences for your chapter outline, sample verbs for variation in your chapter outline, other interesting articles, frequently asked questions about thesis and dissertation outlines. While there are some inter-institutional differences, many outlines proceed in a fairly similar fashion.
For a more detailed overview of chapters and other elements, be sure to check out our article on the structure of a dissertation or download our template . To help you get started, we’ve created a full thesis or dissertation template in Word or Google Docs format. It’s easy adapt it to your own requirements. Download Word template Download Google Docs template It can be easy to fall into a pattern of overusing the same words or sentence constructions, which can make your work monotonous and repetitive for your readers. Consider utilizing some of the alternative constructions presented below. Example 1: Passive constructionThe passive voice is a common choice for outlines and overviews because the context makes it clear who is carrying out the action (e.g., you are conducting the research ). However, overuse of the passive voice can make your text vague and imprecise. Example 2: IS-AV constructionYou can also present your information using the “IS-AV” (inanimate subject with an active verb ) construction. A chapter is an inanimate object, so it is not capable of taking an action itself (e.g., presenting or discussing). However, the meaning of the sentence is still easily understandable, so the IS-AV construction can be a good way to add variety to your text. Example 3: The “I” constructionAnother option is to use the “I” construction, which is often recommended by style manuals (e.g., APA Style and Chicago style ). However, depending on your field of study, this construction is not always considered professional or academic. Ask your supervisor if you’re not sure. Example 4: Mix-and-matchTo truly make the most of these options, consider mixing and matching the passive voice , IS-AV construction , and “I” construction .This can help the flow of your argument and improve the readability of your text. As you draft the chapter outline, you may also find yourself frequently repeating the same words, such as “discuss,” “present,” “prove,” or “show.” Consider branching out to add richness and nuance to your writing. Here are some examples of synonyms you can use.

When you mention different chapters within your text, it’s considered best to use Roman numerals for most citation styles. However, the most important thing here is to remain consistent whenever using numbers in your dissertation . The title page of your thesis or dissertation goes first, before all other content or lists that you may choose to include. Dissertation Binding and Printing Options | Comparison and TipsPublished on 3 April 2019 by Raimo Streefkerk . Revised on 10 July 2019. Your dissertation is finally finished, you got it proofread and checked for plagiarism . The final step is printing your dissertation, which means choosing between:
Single vs. double sided
You also need to decide which printing and binding service to use. This independent article explains all options and helps you make the right decisions. Overview of printing services Table of contentsTypes of dissertation binding, dissertation printing options, production and delivery times, last checks before printing, overview of printing and binding services. Aside from keeping the pages of your dissertation together, the binding is also responsible for your supervisor’s first impression of your dissertation. There are various types of binding, ranging from the cheaper spiral binding to the more expensive hardcover book binding . The type of binding should depend on:
Spiral binding (± £7)
Comb binding (± £5)
Fastback binding (± £8)
Paperback binding (£10-20)
Hardback binding (£20-40)
Colour vs. Black & WhiteUnless specifically stated in your university guidelines, it is up to you to decide whether to print your dissertation in colour or black & white. Printing in colour is on average two to four times more expensive. In general, a colour-printed dissertation looks more professional, but it is not required. Does your dissertation contain graphs or figures that rely on colour? Be sure to print at least these pages in colour. Printing double sided is often cheaper than printing single sided due to the paper savings – it makes your dissertation half as thick. However, some universities require you to print your dissertation single sided. Be sure to check the guidelines. When printing your dissertation double sided, pay attention to the following points:
Paper weightThe thickness of the paper (measured in gsm or grams) is something most students don’t think about, but it does have a significant impact on the look and feel of your dissertation. Standard printing paper has a weight of 75-90 gsm. For a bachelor’s or master’s dissertation this is fine. If you want the paper to look and feel more professional and durable, a paper weight of 100-130 gsm is better. This is often used for PhD dissertations. Number of copiesIt is common to print three to five copies of your dissertation. Depending on your university’s guidelines you might need to submit one to three copies to your supervisor. In addition, you might want to have a copy for yourself or your family. The production (printing and binding) takes on average two days, and delivery takes another day. For an additional charge (ranging from +20 to +80%), the production and delivery time can be shortened. Have a looming deadline? Your local printing shop is probably able to print and bind your dissertation faster, and it eliminates delivery time. However, keep in mind that this is often a little more expensive. Before sending your dissertation to a printing shop, there are three things you should do: 1. Save your dissertation as a PDF By saving your file as a PDF, the formatting will be consistent on every computer. This way you prevent any unpleasant surprises such as offsets when receiving your printed dissertation. 2. Check for language mistakes There’s nothing worse than finding a language mistake in your printed version. Make sure to proofread your dissertation or make use of a professional dissertation proofreading service . 3. Update the contents page Before saving your dissertation as a PDF, update the (automatic) table of contents. Don’t forget to cross-check the page numbers listed in the table of contents with the actual page number. The table below provides an overview of the most popular dissertation printing and binding shops, both online and offline. The shops are ordered by price, with information on delivery costs and review score.
*Prices are based on a spiral bound dissertation of 40 pages , printed single-sided , in black , on 80-90gsm paper, including a clear outer front and back cover . **Prices are based on a hardback bound dissertation of 200 pages , printed single-sided , in black , on 90-100gsm paper. Now all you have to do is complete the printing and binding of your thesis before you can finally submit it. When it comes to printing and binding, students scarcely are experts in the field and therefore always have the same questions:
We want to help you find the right answers to these questions. Therefore, this is a step-by-step guide to printing and binding your thesis to make it a success. What Should I Consider when Printing my Thesis? When printing your thesis, you have to consider a few things beforehand: Black and white or colour? When printing your thesis, remember that colour is always more expensive than black and white. Printing in colour definitely looks impressive. However, if you have too much colour some people may take your thesis less seriously than they might otherwise. If printing in colour is not essential, you are better sticking with black and white. Which kind of paper? When you visit a copyshop, they usually print your thesis on 80 g/m 2 paper. However, this paper type is quite thin. Plus, the print on the paper's reverse side will often shine through which never looks good. Look for a shop with printing options that include 100 g/m 2 paper. Some may even offer this as a default which can save you lots of money. Where do I get the best prices? The price of printing your thesis is determined by the combination of your paper weight, the use of black and white or colour ink, and the number of pages. Visit various shops and ask for quotes for the same specifications. X pages in colour printed on 100 g/m 2 paper. Then compare the prices and see if you can find external customer reviews to help you make an informed decision. Tip: If you order online, try to find a provider with free shipping. What Should I Consider when Binding my Thesis?"How" to bind a thesis is something most students do not know. First of all, they usually do not know which binding to use. The answer to this question depends on the type of thesis being submitted. Research papers tend to be very long and detailed while regular term papers are shorter and completed faster. Regular term papers are worth a small fraction of a grade while a Bachelor's thesis, Master's thesis or a research paper make a massive impact. Simply put, when printing and binding your dissertation you need a superior binding if the paper is worth more. A leather-bound paper is appropriate for a Master's thesis while a spiral-bound paper will do for a regular term project. Most colleges and universities will have specific binding requirements for you to adhere to. Before you print and bind your thesis, check what guidelines have been provided by your institution. Which Bindings are Available? When printing your thesis, it is much easier to bind it correctly if you know what your options are first.

For many students, this academic research paper marks the end of their degree program and a fresh, new beginning as a professional in their field of study. Depending on university policy, you may have to print and bind your thesis in book format. To do this, you'll need to take the following steps: research design options, find a publishing company, and place your order. While crafting your thesis may have been a long, painstaking endeavor during the school year, getting it printed is the easy part. At Book1One, we'll walk you through each step of this process. Research Thesis Design OptionsA publishing company will take your research paper and turn it into a beautifully bound book. But what will the final product look like? Figuring out how your thesis should look is the first step. Do you want a cloth or leather cover? Do the pages need to be in color to highlight graphs and images, or will they be printed with sharp, black text? While there are several design elements to consider, the choices can often be narrowed down by your university. Find out if your school has thesis guidelines students are required to follow. Learning these guidelines can help inform your next steps forward. Depending on the university, these requirements may include:
If you're unsure of where to look for these guidelines, consult your academic adviser, who should be able to give this information to you or show you where to find it. If your school has no guidelines, it will be up to you to design your book in a way that puts your hard work in the best possible light. Take a step-by-step approach to this part of your project:
A publishing company can help you make any final decisions throughout the process. Many companies are well-versed in this type of book printing and can provide samples for your review. Find a Thesis Publishing CompanyAfter you've either learned what your university expects or settled on a design of your own, it's time to research publishing companies that have exactly what you need. From online self-publishing companies to local printing establishments near campus, there are many places to print your thesis. Some of the factors that may go into this decision include:
If you're not sure where to go to have your thesis bound, your peers or university adviser may have some suggestions as to where to start your search. Print Your Thesis PaperOnce you've nailed down a publisher, it's time to craft the final product. By the time you've hit this step, your thesis should be thoroughly edited, proofread for errors, and ready to go. Having a second pair of eyes can be essential in catching hidden typos that may have been overlooked during your revisions. Asking a peer or professor to give it a once-over can save you in the end. Next, review the printing guidelines. During this stage, it's important to find out if any of your design choices will affect your work. Here are just a few things to consider:
A self-publishing company should offer some guidelines as to how to place your order. Many online companies request a simple PDF, while others may prefer other file formats or even a hard copy of your paper. As far as placing your order, it's always a good idea to give your publishing company ample time for production. Many orders can be delivered within a couple of weeks. However, some offer rush ordering options (often at an added expense) for clients who are shorter on time. Additionally, some companies can provide a proof copy. While this service likely also comes with an additional fee, it gives students a chance to review their work before receiving the final product. If you're considering this service, leave ample time to finalize your paper. Once you've received your thesis, make sure to look it over from cover to cover to ensure it's exactly the way you've envisioned before submission. Up until this point in their academic career, most students have never even considered binding a research paper. However, theses and dissertations are typically the exceptions to the rule. After researching design options, finding the ideal publishing company, and placing your order, it's time to wait for the final product to be delivered to your hands. When your thesis is bound and delivered, you'll have a keepsake from your college career that you can look back on for years to come. Jerz > Writing > Academic [ Argument | Title | Thesis | Blueprint | Pro/Con | Quoting | MLA Format ] The blueprint, typically found in the thesis paragraph, is a list of the topics you plan to cover in oder to prove your thesis. A useful blueprint will preview the relationship between all sub-points (or at least list the points) in the order they will appear in the body of your paper, before the paper launches into details about the first sub-point. Including a good blueprint will not only help your reader follow your argument, it will help your writing. It’s easier to add a room, move a hallway, or redesign a whole wing at the blueprinting stage, rather than tearing down sections of a partially-built house.
If your paper begins with a rambling introduction that serves up chunks that you recall from lectures and random web pages, the reader will have a hard time picking out your main point (because you don’t really have one).
Serial Organization (weak integration)
Revision: Some Attempt to Organize
The list of topics you plan to address in the body of your paper is important, but I’m using letters so that you can focus more closely on the structures that link those ideas.
Examples of thesis statements with a reasoning blueprint:Note that the reasoning blueprint introduces subpoints that the reader will expect you to cover in the same order.
Personal essays and reflection papers may require no sources other than the author’s opinions and personal experiences, but a college research paper will require deep engagement with outside sources. For the next example, we’ll assume your instructor accepts Smith as a credible source for this paper.
Below is an even more complex argument, which demonstrates a college-level ability to sift through ideas from multiple sources.
Use “Thesis Reminders” for TransitionsNo matter how good your thesis, your writing is worth little if it does not cohere (hold together) and demonstrate to the reader how each new point advances the main idea . You can accomplish both goals by providing your reader with thesis reminders. A thesis reminder is a direct echo of the thesis statement , used as a transition between supporting points.
A good thesis sentence has three main parts: the limited subject (what your paper is about), the precise opinion (what you’re trying to say about that subject), and the blueprint (what this web page is about). (See: “ Thesis Statements “) Here are two examples of using the thesis and the blueprint to maintain coherence. Thesis: Restoring old houses is rewarding because it is exciting , relaxing , and satisfying .
Thesis: Becoming a ski patroller turned out to be harder than I thought because of the studying, the skiing , and the time demands .
You Don’t Need Exactly Three Points! If you are writing a more complex essay, you may use a different format, but you still must include blueprints and reminders. For example, a critical essay may have a thesis, antithesis, and a synthesis. The antithesis presents all the arguments against your thesis, and a synthesis is a kind of compromise, in which you attempt to prove that, whatever points your opponents might have in their favor, your thesis still stands. Each of these sections may have 3 or more points, which are united by local blueprints and local reminders, capped off by local conclusions, and worked into by the tapestry of the whole argument. Varieties of BlueprintsThese are all acceptable ways to blueprint in a thesis statement.
Use Good StructureThe order of the points in the blueprint should perfectly parallel the points in the essay. If you say you are going to talk about “ships, shoes, and sealing wax,” but your essay starts with “sealing wax,” then your blueprint is distorted. Here is an example of a different kind of distortion — faulty parallelism .
Note : A thesis statement amounts to nothing if the paper is not completely focused on that main point. Proper blueprinting facilitates the coherency of the thesis throughout the rest of the essay.

The 5 best ways to print and save web pages on WindowsThere are ways to improve your printing and saving experience in chrome, firefox, edge, and other modern browsers running on windows.. Modern-day websites aren’t usually built for printing. Whether you want to print a web page on paper, save it as a PDF, or capture a clean screenshot for archival purposes, it’s often harder than it should be. Plus, so much junk — advertisements, pop-ups, navigation elements, and more — can get in the way of a nicely printed document. But printing and saving web pages is still critical. Whether you’re dealing with an online receipt, a confirmation page, important research, or critical business documents, you often want to keep your own copy of a web page — just in case. These tips will help you capture a clean version of a web page so you can print it on a piece of paper or save it as a file on whatever Windows computer you’re using. Want more timely Windows PC tips? Sign up for my free Windows Intelligence newsletter to get three new things to try every Friday and free Windows Field Guides as a special welcome bonus. Windows web printing path #1: Print to PDFOn Windows and in other operating systems, all modern browsers have built-in PDF-printing features. Just select the “Print” option in your browser’s menu and choose “Save as PDF” or “Save to PDF” as your printer device. You’ll be able to save the PDF file to a document anywhere you like. Simple. Perhaps you want to save it to cloud storage rather than printing it on the office printer. On modern versions of Windows, you can also print to PDF from any application. Windows 10 and Windows 11 include a built-in “PDF printer.” Start printing in nearly any application and choose the “Microsoft Print to PDF” printer device to use it. Chris Hoffman, IDG Windows web printing path #2: Reader ModeIf you’re printing a document and there are ads, images, and other unnecessary elements getting in the way, try Reader Mode. This applies to any type of printing — whether you’re printing on paper or printing to PDF. Reader Mode is easy to activate if you’re using Mozilla Firefox, Microsoft Edge, Brave, or many other browsers (such as Safari in macOS). Just click the document-shaped button that appears at the right side of your web browser’s address bar while reading an online article. Google Chrome makes this a little harder. Chrome only offers a “ Reading mode ” that appears as a sidebar — and you can’t print from there. You’ll need a browser extension to do so; the Reader View extension for Chrome is a good option. Once you’ve activated Reader Mode in your browser, you can print normally. Right-click the page and select “Print,” or choose “Print” from your browser’s menu. You’ll be printing the simplified view shown in Reader Mode, and it will be much cleaner. If you’re using the Reader View extension for Chrome, be sure to click the “Print” button at the left side of the reading mode page to get the cleanest possible printout with no buttons in the way. Windows web printing path #3: Print just part of a pageModern browsers let you print just part of a web page, too. To do so, select some text and other elements on the web page with your mouse. Then, right-click your selection and, within the Windows context menu for your browser, select “Print” or “Print selection.” Your browser will then show you a print preview containing just the parts of the page you selected. Other options in the Windows Print dialog are also useful. For example, you can often save a lot of paper — or get a smaller PDF file with fewer unnecessary pages — by selecting just the pages you want to print in the print dialog. The print preview will help you determine which ones you need to print. Windows web printing path #4: Save a screenshotPrinting to PDF is fine — especially once you’ve cleaned things up first with Reader Mode. But many pages will look weird once you print them as a PDF. You might want to save a copy of the web page that looks just like it does in your browser. You can do this by using normal screenshot tools like the Snipping Tool built into Windows — press Windows+Shift+S or Print Screen to launch it. But that’s not ideal, because you can only capture what you see on your screen at that exact moment. Instead, consider creating a full-page screenshot that captures the entire page — even parts that you have to scroll to see. This is easy if you’re Mozilla Firefox or Edge. Just right-click a page and select the “Screenshot” option in the context menu, then select the “Full Page” option. You’ll get a PNG image file with everything visible on the page. In Chrome, you’ll need a browser extension — unless you want to dig into the developer console , where Google buried this feature. GoFullPage is a good extension that will capture a full-page screenshot. Note: this will create an image of the web page, so links won’t be clickable. On the other hand, if you create a PDF from a web page, you will have clickable links. There’s a place for both. In fact, if you’re saving a particularly important web page for later, you might even want to create both a screenshot and a PDF. Windows web printing path #5: Clip to OneNoteIf you’re creating a digital copy of a web page as a PDF file or screenshot, you’ll need to organize and archive it. A better solution might be clipping it to a note-taking app you already use. Microsoft OneNote is one of the best note-taking applications for Windows PCs — and other platforms , too. With OneNote, you can install the OneNote Web Clipper extension and clip either full web pages or sections of them to OneNote, storing them alongside your notes in a way that best fits your organization style. (This extension is available for Chrome, Edge, Brave, and other Chromium-based browsers. Unfortunately, Microsoft no longer offers it for Firefox.) These aren’t bookmarks: You’ll have the full text of the web page, so you can search it, and you’ll have your own copy in case you can no longer access the web page in the future. You can also just copy-paste parts of a web page directly to OneNote or another note-taking application you use. Bonus: Access an archived copy laterSince we’re talking about archiving web pages, it’s worth mentioning what to do if you forgot to archive a web page and need to get a copy later. The Internet Archive’s Wayback Machine at archive.org is the best place to find a cached copy of a web page . Of course, this won’t work for private web pages — you’re not going to find an archive of your personal online shopping receipt, event booking confirmation page, or document on your company’s private network here. But you will find older copies of publicly visible websites. For easier access to this and other archives, you can install the Web Archives browser extension, which is available for Chrome , Firefox , Edge , and other Chromium-based browsers. But how do they transfer the digital image to a map that can control nozzle firing? In this preliminary report, we briefly illustrate that part of the printing pipeline that starts from a halftone image and ends with Hardware Ready Bits (HRBs). We also describe the implementation of the multi-pass printing method with a designed print mask. HRBs are used to read an input halftone CMY image and output a binary map of each color to decide whether or not to eject the corresponding coloranr drop at each pixel position. In general, for an inkjet printer, each row of the image corresponds to one specific nozzle in each swath so that each swath will be the height of the printhead \cite{torpey1997multipass}. To avoid visible white streaks due to clogged or burned out color nozzles, the method called multi-pass printing is implemented. Subsequently, the print mask is introduced so that we can decide during which pass each pixel should be printed. Once we figure out how to transfer the digital image to our printing signals. We start to think about improving the color performance for the inkjet printer. In one of our previous papers \cite{wang2020developing}, we described the color management pipeline that was applied to our nail inkjet printer, which is used to map the source gamut to the destination printer gamut. However, the resulting prints are not as vivid as we would like to have, since those prints are not well saturated. To obtain more saturated prints, we propose a saturation enhancement method based on image segmentation and hue angle. This method will not necessarily give us the closest representation of the colors within the input image but could give us more saturated prints. The main idea of our saturation enhancement method is to keep the lightness and hue constant, while stretching the chroma component. In one of our previous papers \cite{hu2021improving}, we mostly focused on the color saturation problem in our inkjet printer. However, our partner reported that there are some boundary noise pixels on the background, which are quite visible when the background is white. By checking the pipeline of our printing procedure, we realized that the noise stray dots are generated during the halftoning procedure. This part of the dissertation is dedicated to separating the white background from the foreground, which enables us to constrain the error diffusion process inside the white background. The main idea is to apply image segmentation, which could help us to precisely extract the background. Lastly, inspired by the paper \cite{smith2023chiral}, we decided to design an aperiodic clustered-dot screen, which may have better performance compared to the current DBS screen. This screen generation method is offline, so the time cost is not our main consideration. The output halftone result is what we concentrate on. This screen is generated based on a polygon shape, which is called tile(1,1) defined by the paper \cite{smith2023chiral}. We keep extending this single polygon shape to obtain the combination aperiodic shape that is called a supertile. After obtaining the final supertile, we assigned each tile(1,1) shape to either a dot or a hole based on the complementary symmetry property. Finally, based on some interpolation methods, we generate the threshold matrix. Degree Type

How to Print Something in 2024It may seem archaic in the go-go-digital year of 2024, but sometimes it's still necessary to print something on paper. Maybe you want at least a few physical copies of your updated résumé to hand out at a job fair. Maybe the old-school venue where you're seeing a performance still insists on paper tickets instead of scanning a QR code on your phone. Or you could just want to print photos at home instead of dealing with the photo counter at your local pharmacy. Whatever the reason, the march of technology has made it increasingly unlikely that you currently own a printer, or that you will own one in the future. The technology already has decades of bad blood with customers , and sales of consumer printers and print cartridges have been falling . New subscription-based models for home printers or ink have not been met with enthusiasm. And printer companies are slimming their portfolios; Epson is getting out of laser printers entirely over sustainability issues, and HP recently discontinued its online-only LaserJets due to technical problems and user backlash. For now, home printers have not yet gone the way of VCRs and fax machines, but you might still find yourself in a pinch when you need something printed out. Let's take a look at the easiest ways to get something printed when the need arises: Buying a PrinterIf you don't already own a home printer, or you have a printer that doesn't work or that you're completely frustrated with (a very common problem ), you can purchase a new one. If you catch an online sale, you can get a basic inkjet printer for as little as $50 . That might suit your needs if you only plan to print occasionally and don't mind springing for combo ink packages that cost about $35 a pop. Inkjet printers are pretty versatile, and a basic model might be all you need, but if you need an all-in-one device that can scan, copy, print, and do tricks like double-sided printing, you'll spend more like $150 to $350. Laser printers are still mostly used by offices that print high volumes, and the cost of ink toner can vary greatly. Basic monochrome laser printers cost as little as $110 , or less if they're on sale , while all-in-one color models can cost $450 and up . One thing that has changed about printers in the past 10 or 15 years is that third-party ink cartridge makers have made ink more affordable, but manufacturers continue to try to force customers to stick with their brands of ink, going so far as to disable some printers that use third-party cartridges. Some people swear by printers that use an ink tank reservoir instead of cartridges; you simply fill up the tank with new ink when it runs low. These printers typically cost more, but the point is to save money on ink over the long haul. Whatever printer you buy, make sure you're happy with its wireless-printing capabilities. Modern printers typically allow you to print from any device on your home Wi-Fi network—from both computers and mobile devices—eliminating the old-school need to hook a cable up to a PC. On some printers, leaving the device unused for a long time can affect the ink and clog up the works; if you think you won't be using the printer more than a few times a year, it might be more economical (and less frustrating) to outsource your printing instead. Printing on Demand (in Person)If you don't have or want a printer, but you need something printed immediately, your best option, other than asking a friend or family member to do it for you, may be to visit a nearby print shop or your local library. FedEX Office can copy or print documents on a variety of papers, in color or black-and-white, and the employees working there can even give you some design help. For basic documents, you might be paying about 21 cents per page . You can bring your document to a FedEX Office store on a USB drive to plug into a copier device, or email the document to FedEx and have them print it for you. Staples , UPS Stores , and Office Depot offer similar printing services . Of course, other local print shops offer customized service as well. You might also find print-for-a-fee services at your supermarket's business center. For photos, you've likely seen printing kiosks at retailers like CVS or Walmart. You can usually connect your mobile devices to the kiosk, plug in a USB drive, or upload photos through an app. If you're using an app or the photo service's website, you can upload your images at home, pay for your prints, and pick them up later when they're ready. Many people are surprised to learn they can print for free (within certain limits) at their local library. My nearby public library charges 10 cents a page for black-and-white printing and 50 cents a page for color, but gives patrons $5 of their first prints for free. It's hard to beat that deal. If you're traveling, your hotel is likely to offer free printing in its business center—helpful if you need to get a last-minute boarding pass on paper or have other travel-related print needs. Printing on Demand (Not in Person)If you can wait a few days or longer, you can shop around for the best deal from a variety of online printing services. Photo printing services like Printique and Snapfish have evolved quite a bit and are great for projects like photo books or custom gifts like personalized calendars or holiday photo cards. VistaPrint , CatPrint and GotPrint are among the services that offer a wide range of printing jobs, from documents to business cards to T-shirts to wedding invitations. We may be moving to a cashless, all-digital society, but printing is still a requirement for some tasks. Thankfully, these days that doesn't automatically mean you have to own or maintain a printer of your own. Paris Olympics’ Australian breakdancer who became internet meme
Among the various breakers competing in the Paris Olympics, one in particular has taken the internet by storm: Australia’s Rachael Gunn. In videos of her performances shared online, B-Girl Raygun was seen hopping around like a kangaroo, touching her toes while lying down and seemingly squirming around on the dance floor. Netizens were quick to pick up on Gunn’s unusual moves and catapulted her to internet fame with thousands memes. But who is she? Let’s take a look. Early yearsBorn in Hornsby in New South Wales, Gunn was a former jazz and ballroom dancer. She was introduced to breaking by the man she later married, who had been practising for 10 years. Although Gunn grew up dancing, she did not start competing in breaking competitions until her mid-twenties. “I wasn’t a sporty kid, I was more of a dance kid,” Gunn had said. “I never thought the Olympics would be on the cards for me. It’s such a privilege and it’s hugely exciting.” Breakdancing careerGunn graduated university with her PHD thesis focusing on ‘the intersection of gender and Sydney’s breaking culture’ in 2017. By 2020, Gunn worked her way up to become the Australian Breaking Association’s top ranked B-Girl. She took part at the World Breaking Championships in Paris in 2021 and in Seoul 12 months later, and qualified for the Paris Games via the Oceania Championships in October 2023. “I think a lot of people had doubted my ability to do it and maybe thought I was getting too old to be able to stay on top,” she said. “But I just kept pushing hard, I want to get better, and I want the scene to grow and get better. Gunn’s experience had also influenced her beyond the dance floor as well. She is a lecturer at the Department of Media, Communications, Creative Arts, Language and Literature at Macquarie University, where her biography states that she is an interdisciplinary and practice-based researcher interested in the cultural politics of breaking. Internet fameDespite Gunn’s experience in the discipline, her unique performance at the Paris Olympics quickly went viral on social media. She finished the group phase with no points, which led many to question how she earned qualification. Despite the jokes, Gunn defended her performance. “I was never going to beat these girls on what they do best, the dynamic and the power moves, so I wanted to move differently, be artistic and creative because how many chances do you get in a lifetime to do that on an international stage?,” she said. “I was always the underdog and wanted to make my mark in a different way.” The memes drew an impassioned defence from Australia’s chef de mission Anna Meares as she hit out at “trolls and keyboard warriors”. “If you don’t know Rachael’s story, in 2008, she was locked in a room crying, being involved in a male dominated sport as the only woman and it took great courage for her to continue on and fight for her opportunity to participate in a sport that she loved,” she said. Meares noted that Gunn was the best female breakdancer the country had and was an “absolutely loved member” of the Olympic team. |
