Here’s a recent IELTS Writing Task 2 question and a sample Band 9 answer:

Scientists say that in the future humanity will speak the same language. Do you think this is a positive or negative social development?

Sample Answer

One of the consequences of globalization is that even though there are more humans on the earth, the number of languages spoken is decreasing. As nomadic people and small tribes are assimilated into the wider population, and as powerful languages are increasingly taught in schools, it seems likely that in future all people will speak the same language. I don’t believe this is a terrible thing, but it not without its problems. On the surface, it may seem as though the loss of languages is inherently negative . Our language is a part of our cultural identity , and without it people may feel a sense of loss. For example, some populations whose traditional language is dying out will lose their ancient stories and traditions, and feel that they are now no different from other groups of people. This problem is exacerbated by the fact that dominant cultures, whose languages are spreading throughout the world, maintain their cultural traditions. However, although there are clearly some unfortunate side effects of this aspect of globalization, there are so many benefits that they outweigh the negatives. For one thing, the dominance of major languages like English ensures an increased level of literacy throughout populations where previously there were only oral languages or very limited written materials. While the loss of cultural artifacts is regrettable, the rise of literacy increases standards of living, and this is more important. In conclusion, there are some undeniably negative consequences of a global language; however, the increase in literacy levels is an example of a benefit to humanity that vastly outweighs any imaginable drawback.

Will English Remain A Global Language Despite Globalisation?

Throughout the world, English is considered as a link language that enables speakers of different mother tongues to communicate with one another. Some people argue that in this age of globalization, English may get replaced by another prominent language. I do not agree with this view. In my opinion, instead of shaking the prominence of English as a global language, globalization will only reinforce it.

English has more speakers than any other language in the world. Actually, the majority of them speak English as a second language. This is a clear indication of its popularity outside of English speaking countries like the USA, the UK and Australia. No other language enjoys this kind of reach.

Of course, languages like Mandarin and Hindi are gaining prominence because many businesses are moving to China and India. This, however, does not mean that Mandarin or Hindi will replace English. While it is true that these languages have a considerable number of speakers within their countries, they are almost never used outside. This is not the case with English.

Another factor that bolsters the popularity of English is the fact that much of the scientific literature is written in English. In other words, anyone who wants to stay abreast of the developments in science and technology need to know English. In addition, the vast majority of websites on the internet are in English. That means people who have a working knowledge of English have access to an endless pool of information. That explains why even countries like China and Japan have started teaching English in schools.

To conclude, English is the language of opportunity and communication. As trade and commerce increase between countries, other languages may also gain more speakers. However, the argument that they will replace English as the language of communication does not hold water in view of the points mentioned above.

Task 2 globalisation essay questions are very common in the IELTS exam.  Before we get into looking at globalisation task 2 examples, there’s a small point to make about spelling. Recently, a student asked me, ‘What is the difference between globalization and globalisation?’ The answer is, not much. Either spelling is acceptable, the only difference is that spelling it with an s is generally preferred in the UK, while the word is more commonly spelt with a z in the USA. All you need to do is be consistent, meaning that if you use the word more than once in your answer, spell it the same way both times. In order to be fair, we will write the next part of the article using the z spelling.

What  exactly  is Globalization?

Globalization is  a term used to describe how trade and technology have made the world a more connected and interdependent place . Globalization also captures in its scope the economic and social changes that have come about as a result.

So, any globalization essay in IELTS could mention the term directly or talk about jobs or technology. A globalization writing task 2 gives you a lot of scope for using less common phrases to talk about the world. ( With the rapid development of the global economy…. ). When you look at the globalization task 2 example questions below, think first about how you might answer them and then look at the sample answers for more hints and ideas.

Some people believe that the most important aspect of their job is their salary. Others think that the job itself is the most important. What do you think is the most important aspect of a job? Include specific details and examples to support your choice.

• Every country should produce enough of everything that the country needs so it does not have to rely on imports. Do you agree or disagree with this statement? Use specific reasons and examples to support your position.
• Some developed countries now have unemployment problems.  Why do people still want to emigrate to these countries? Give reasons and specific examples to explain your answer.

As a part of globalisation English has become the most widely spoken language around the world. While there are many benefits to using English as a global language, it also has some negative effects.

To begin with, one of the main advantages of having one global language is that it will reduce the gap between the countries as there is no communication barrier. It helps to form a stronger relationship among the nations. As a result, international trades such as the importing and exporting of goods will increase and benefit the growth of economy around the globe. Furthermore, English helps people to travel around the world without experiencing any difficulties. Many tourists find it hard to communicate to the native people for their simple needs such as asking directions, ordering food etc. These issues will be solved if there is only one language.

On the other hand, there are many drawbacks to this trend. Language is a part of every culture. If everyone spoke one language, the other local languages will disappear gradually. Then, there would be no cultural diversity. One of the main reasons that attract tourists to other countries is that their cultural differences. If everyone has the same culture, there is no meaning in visiting other places. So this trend can have negative impacts on the tourism industry.

To conclude, although there are some negative sides to having a single global language, it brings many benefits such as the growth of international business and economy. In my opinion, the advantages of having one global language far outweigh its disadvantages.

Some sophisticated interpreters and linguistics have assumed that if we are willing to have a higher quality of communication with people around the world, having a global language would be necessary. Many people including me, agree with this assumption and encourage experts to work on that.

The primary reason why I believe global language is a beneficial idea is that if all people worldwide speak and write in the same language , then there would be no concern about misunderstanding or being self-conscious about not being able to communicate. Moreover, for students or workers who are thinking about continuing their career and studies abroad , language degrees or having a certain level of fluency of a required language wouldn’t be a problem anymore.

When it comes to languages, one can make a strong argument that a strong link exists between dominance and cultural power. Furthermore, the main factor that the languages become popular is due to a powerful power-base, whether economic or political or military.

The derivation of the English language took place from languages like French, Latin, German, and other European languages. This can be a reason why many Europeans don’t find English a difficult language to learn. Furthermore, linguists argue whether the simplicity of the English language is the main reason for it becoming a global language.

The Latin script of the English language appears less complicated for people to recognize and learn. Also, the pronunciation of the English language is not as complex as other languages like Korean or Turkish for example.

Generally, the difficulty level of a language varies from person to person and it also depends on the culture to which one may belong. For example, a Korean person would find less difficulty in mastering the Japanese language in comparison to a German person. This is because of the close proximity of the Korean and Japanese cultures.

Due to the massive British colonial conquests , no culture is in complete oblivion of the English language or words. As such, English is a language that should not appear as too alien or strange to any community. Consequently, learning English is not such big of a deal for most people as they can find a certain level of familiarity with the language.

The Effectiveness of the English Language

English is a very effective language and this is evident due to the presence of various native and non-native speakers on a global scale. Furthermore, according to statistics, one-fourth of the world is either fluent in the English language or content with it. While it’s true that the number of native Mandarin speakers is the greatest in the world, Mandarin is not the global language due to its complex spellings, grammar , and letter system.

The English language, on the other hand, does not suffer from such complexity problems. Furthermore, the English language has a lot of words and synonyms to express something. As such, any word or its meaning can be expressed with a high level of accuracy.

English is certainly the most widely spoken language in the world by far. On a global scale, English has the most number of speakers, who speak English either as a first or second language. Without a doubt, no other language in the world can come close to English in terms of its immense popularity.

The spread of English as a global language is a positive event as a majority of nations across the world speak English and it is also a common language for official purposes.

Since English is a comparatively easy language to learn, it is easier for people to adopt it as a second or third language.

Sample Essay 1

The prevalence of English is a consequence of the spread of the British Empire in the past. However, many nations that were not British colonies have also adopted the language as a means of communication. It is often debated whether the widespread use of English is a favourable phenomenon or a threat to other languages, especially indigenous ones and a formality that is often too difficult to bear. In my opinion, this occurrence can have a plethora of benefits.

It is a well-known fact that English is the most widely spoken language across the globe. It is also the primary mode of communication for a majority of official purposes and the medium of instruction in most academic institutions all over the world. Although there are still several places where English is still a very unfamiliar language, there are still ways in which the language is used in these locations one way or another. Therefore, the spread of this language will only ease communication and facilitate convenience in daily life.

Furthermore, being a relatively straightforward language to grasp, it can be easily made a part of an individual’s lexicon . Today, mastering English is made simpler with the facilities of the Internet and online study resources. Additionally, with the advent of globalization, people are presented with opportunities to be employed by large corporations and multinationals. That being said, English is the primary language used for communication in these organizations. Thus, having the knowledge of English will help individuals take advantage of such opportunities.

Nonetheless, the universality of English has overshadowed several native languages. Even so, it is an outcome of progress and we must adapt to such events.

Finally, the widespread use of English has benefits as well as drawbacks. Nevertheless, the advantages of this situation greatly surpass the disadvantages.

Band 9 Sample Essay

Unequivocally, the proliferation of the English language has a substantial impact on many countries, boosting developing countries’ businesses and tourism through regional integration and laying the foundations for individuals to obtain high-quality education in developed countries. While there are substantial benefits to utilizing English as a worldwide language, there are some drawbacks as well. The advantages of this tendency, in my opinion, outweigh the disadvantages, which I will describe in the following essay.

To begin with, English has high global prestige. One of the key advantages of integrating English as a global language is that it bridges the communication gap between countries, uniting individuals from all ethnicities, cultural backgrounds, and races worldwide. As a result, people can access a broader cultural environment. In addition, English’s widespread use as the universal language attracts foreign investors and tourists from industrialized nations, boosting globalization.

Further, English is the only medium of instruction at many of the world’s leading universities, and working professionals with strong English speaking skills stay ahead of the competition in the job market. Furthermore, English allows tourists to travel worldwide without encountering any language obstacles. Many travellers struggle to communicate with natives. If there is only one language, issues during travel will be addressed.

Although English’s universality poses a significant threat to minority languages, mother tongue languages, and other cultures, leading to westernization, English as a single global language serves as a tool of communication, empowerment, and unification for people worldwide.

To summarise, I believe that the benefits of the English language far exceed the negatives and that English will soon be widely used over the world, reducing communication barriers.

Sample Essay 2

There is vast literature discussing the proliferation of the English language on an international scale in the contemporary world. A school of thought holds that the popularity of a single language brings countless benefits, while others argue that it regardless of significant demerits. In my perspective, English has served the community more considerable advantages than drawbacks.

From the point of globalization, the widespread usage of a single language, English, has resulted in the unity of humans from parts of the world. It was difficult for foreigners to communicate well when they visited a country with a different language system. When everyone speaks a common language, it breaks through the language barriers, consequently integrating into a single community.

In terms of social-economic development, global languages play a discernible role in international commercialization. The great potential of numerous English users, which is equivalent to enormous global demand, will decide the success of exporting products. For example, one of the appropriate brand strategies is to translate their products information into English and ship them through various trade promotion activities and technical support. Hence, it raises the public interest of English-speaking citizens.

On the contrary, the spread of global languages put minor ones on the verge of disappearance. Scientific research reveals that at least one language disappears from the world after two weeks because no one speaks it anymore. Many local languages are getting less priority. Thus, it impacts cultural identity.

In conclusion, I strongly believe in the viewpoint that the benefits of English, as well as other global languages, bring to nations and their dwellers through globalization eclipse its drawbacks. Besides that, government and relevant organizations should give measures to cope with the minority language disappearance.

Meaning: the fact or condition of being prevalent; commonness. Eg: The prevalence of social media is a dicey occurrence.

Meaning: all the foreign countries or areas formerly under British political control. Eg: India was a part of the British colonies.

Meaning: a fact or situation that is observed to exist or happen, especially one whose cause or explanation is in question. Eg: The birth of black holes is a mysterious phenomenon.

Meaning: originating or occurring naturally in a particular place; native. Eg: The indigenous tribes of the Amazon are quite dangerous.

Meaning: a large or excessive amount of something. Eg: The shopkeeper presented a plethora of choices.

Meaning: make (an action or process) easy or easier. Eg: The teacher only wished to facilitate the learning of the whole class.

Meaning: the vocabulary of a person, language, or branch of knowledge. Eg: The size of the Sanskrit lexicon is unbelievable.

Meaning : the arrival of a notable person or thing. Eg: The advent of the computer was a groundbreaking innovation.

• Overshadowed

Meaning: appear more prominent or important than. Eg: His performance overshadowed every other player in the race.

Meaning: the way a thing turns out; a consequence. Eg: This solution can have a very unfavourable outcome.

It is widely argued that the negative aspects occurred after the international contribution of English, but the positive views still remain higher. As far as my opinion is concerned, I agree with this notion to a great extent as the global contribution of English will promote the economic growth and massively raise in human resources. In the upcoming paragraphs, I will be explaining my point of view in detail. First of all, communication with nonrestrictive language barrier is only the key leading to successful business for encouraging the profitable expansion. This is because every business cooperation often requires well-understanding conversation, which elevate the opportunities for working collaboration. For instance, improper language usage of local company will lead to missed communication with foreign partners that often seen as reducing the chance of cooperation. Thus, the best way for obtaining the higher investment is through using one main connecting language. Secondly, after the global integration of English, the scholar can pursue the post-graduation degree at well-known universities in different countries which will improve the quality of workforce in the future. To illustrate, since the absence of communicable language, the chance for student who want to extent the educational degree is insurmountable. Therefore, the worldwide administration of English has a considerable impact on the production of workers. While it is true that some people may have some negative visions, the benefits are far more effective than drawbacks. To conclude, as applying English internationally, many countries will achieve undeniable outcomes in terms of the extensive growth of gross domestic product and the production of sufficient number of potential workers.

Concentrate on the correct usage of articles, tense, verbs, subject-verb agreement, prepositions and punctuation.

Since it is an opinion essay, you are required to write about one line of contrast in a separate body after presenting two body paragraphs supporting your views.

Pay attention to spellings and maintain word order.

The use of English as a spoken language has been adapted by most of the countries worldwide. In line with this, there are varied positive results and negativities attached to its widened coverage. I believe that the advantages are more valued than the disadvantages and that will be explained further in this essay. More and more countries worldwide have used English language as one of its spoken dialect in their region. This would equipped their citizens to familiarize and discuss matters relating to English. Like for example, trading among businessmen coming from other place who do not know your native dialect. It would then be easy to converse in English, since the two parties have a common denominator and that is the language. Henceforth, both groups will easily be understood and can smoothly progress to their business agenda. Another positive note in learning the English language is when a person travels outside his country and go to an unfamiliar place. At first, he will surely feel lost since no one understands what he is talking about. Same goes to them who are at the end of the opposite side, as misunderstanding would certainly occur. But if both of them converse in English, there will be harmony in the talks and sense of oneness because of the language. However, the presence of disadvantage when English is used can not be denied. For instance, using English instead of your own dialect can possibly lead to people forgetting their own language’s importance. A good example is when the younger generation of Chinese students are taught in school using English-only. This can be applicable to some subjects though, but when it comes to the subject of Chinese calligraphy or literature, it would be best taught and discussed thoroughly in their own native language. Through this way, students will learn more about its value and it can be inculcated into their hearts and minds and be passed on to their next future generations. In conclusion, I believe that learning the English language has more beneficial effects to humankind compared to its drawbacks. In this world wherein progress is our aim, being united with all the people throughout the countries can easily then be achieved with the help of the common clause, and that is the English language.

Be careful about spellings and words order used in a context.

Some sentences are unnecessarily long and lack clarity. Learn error free sentence formation.

IELTS Essays: Five Types of IELTS Essays

There are 5 types of IELTS essays which can appear in IELTS writing task 2. These types of essays are for both GT and Academic writing task 2. Below you will find sample essay questions for each type of essay and links to model answers.  Please note that IELTS teachers sometimes divide essays into different categories based on how they teach.

1) IELTS Opinion Essay

This type of essay is where you are presented with someone else’s opinion and you are asked if you agree or disagree with it. The opinion is often flawed or extreme in its views. Some teachers call this the Argumentative Essay. The instructions can be written in a number of ways. Below are a few examples:

• To what extent do you agree?
• Do you agree?
• Do you agree or disagree?
• What is your opinion?

No matter how the instructions are written, you can take any position you want: agree, disagree or partial agreement (balanced view). Below is an example essay question:

Opinion Essay Question:  Some people think that only electric cars should be allowed on the road by 2040. Do you agree?

2) IELTS Discussion Essay

This type of essay presents you with a statement and you must present the two sides. This might be two sides of the same issue:

Some people think there should be free health care for all people, but others disagree. Discuss both sides.

Or it might be two separate issues which you need to discuss:

Some people think that urban spaces should be used for parks rather than for housing. Discuss both sides and give your opinion.

3) IELTS Advantage Disadvantage Essays

There are two types of questions in this category.

i) Advantage and Disadvantage Essay

This is similar to a discussion essay where you are given a statement must present the positive and negative side of the issue:

Some people think it is good for students to take a gap year before going to university. What are the advantages and disadvantages of doing so?

ii) Outweigh Essay

This is by far the most difficult of the two essay types in this category. It requires you to present an opinion and explain your opinion.

Some people think the world will eventually have only one language. Do you think the advantages of having one global language outweigh the disadvantages?

4) IELTS Solution Essays

There are a number of types of possible questions in this category:

i) Solution Only

Some children have serious weight problems. What are the possible solutions?

ii) Cause Solution

Children in rural areas are being left behind in their academic development. Why is this is the case? What solutions can you suggest?

iii) Problem Solution

More and more people are moving to cities to look for work. What problems does this cause? What are the possible solutions?

5) Direct Questions Essays

Some teachers call these the Two Question Essay. However, these types of essay questions might contain one, two or three questions for you to answer. Below are some examples.

Pollution around the world is becoming a serious problem. Do you think this is a problem that should be solved internationally or on a local level?

In the question above, you are asked one specific question. Your whole essay must tackle this question only.

More and more people are choosing to work from home. Is this a positive or negative development?

This essay question has just one issue and one question. You must explain what type of development you think working from home is.

Some people spend a lot of money on weddings. Why do they do this? Do you think it is good to spend a lot of money on weddings?

Above, you will see you have been presented with two questions to answer: reasons and opinion (evaluating if it is good or not.) 

News editors decide what to print in newspapers and what to broadcast on TV. What factors do you think influence these decisions? Do we become used to bad news? Would it be better if more news was reported?

As you can see there are three questions to answer in this essay question. It is not common to get three questions. If you get three, just tackle them one at a time in a logical order.

Electric cars are progressively replacing non-electric cars by the end of 2040. While it is possible that electric ones will eventually replace the other cars, it is unlikely that they will end up serving the same purpose. This essay will discuss why only few electric cars will be carried out by people.

Electric cars may eventually replace non-electric cars that are not compatible for the environment. Many people think that only electric powered vehicles should be allowed on the road because they emit far less emissions,and less maintenance is required. In China, for example many non-electric motors have been replaced by plug-in vehicles that are more environment friendly and budgeted. For these reasons, cars that can be replaced by electricity will be replaced.

Conversely, there are multiple factors that only electric cars will not be allowed only. Put simply, these factors include affordability and infrastructure development. A necessary framework including charging stations, grid capacity must be required. Without charging stations, drivers may face anxiety and hesitant to switch to electric cars. Additionally, switching completely to electric ones will increase a demand of charging from the grid stations.

It is increasingly likely that powered vehicles will end most non-powered cars. In most of the countries, traveling will be done entirely by electric cars; however, where the money and development are major issues they will always exist. Ultimately, addition of very few electrical cars is valuable but it is not a complete replacement of other cars.

Hi Liz, Kindly advise which are the two top essay types that frequently appears on the test day. I am expecting to take IELTS test two weeks from now and think I do not have enough time to practice all 5 question types. In addition, I assume that each question types are not equally tested. No matter what people tell you, all the types of essays are possible. Focusing on only two is really taking a risk. You have two weeks before your test which is quite a lot of time to review the five types and ideas for topics as well. If I had to pick two types of essays, it would be the Opinion Essay and the Discussion Essay – but it really could be any type. Hello Liz, is it okay to use templates for writing task 2 that is available online some say it decrease our band score while others say it will increase our band scores. I am really confused at the moment.

If you are aiming for a low band score, it’s fine. If you are aiming for a higher band score, it won’t help. The examiners are trained to spot the difference between a templated essay with memorised language in it and an essay that shows your own level of English.

I just want to ask, in the opinion essay, should we always present both sides? For instance, if the question only asks for our opinion on the matter (no mention of discussing both sides) should we still do it? Alternatively, can we just structure the essay to show our opinion and each paragraph elaborates on reasons why that is our opinion? Will doing it this way (not mentioning both sides) adversely affect our band score? Thank you!

Who do you think should pay for this care, the government or the family? Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

Is this an opinion essay which will follow exactly the structure you just taught or a discussion essay.

This is a Direct Question essay. Please remember that each teacher gives different names for essay types. I call this the Direct Question Essay because you are being given a direct question to answer. It might be one question, two or even three questions. Your whole essay explains your answer.

The essay is: In your view, what is the most important thing for governments to spend money on: education, health, transportation, or something else? You said that you “came across” this essay question. Where did you come across it? Did you find it in one of the IELTS Cambridge test books? Only use authentic test questions. If you don’t use proper sources for your IELTS preparation, you will easily get confused about the test and this won’t help your preparation.

That sounds like the problem. You ought to use the IELTS Cambridge test books which are real test published by IELTS. Hope you are keeping well. I am not able to score more than 6.5 in my writing test. I have scored 8.5 in Listening, Reading & Speaking but writing disappoints every time. Where can I find model answer to evaluate where am I lacking? I have taken 2 computer based tests for far and scheduled 3rd one in 5 days. I need band score 7 in Writing to achieve my target.

Task 2- news has no connection with people’s life so it’s a waste of time to read best from newspaper and watch news program on tv. To which extent do you agree. I hope these will help you. Waru

Hi Liz, I follow all your videos and they are very helpful. I gave my speaking exam last week. But now I think the cue card question was to describe a leisure activity I enjoy and I talked about a leisure activity I am planning to enjoy. I am really worried if it will affect my band score. But my talk was fluent . Can you give me your insights?

It won’t make any difference to your score. As long as your talk is based on the main topic (leisure activity), it’s ok. Your score won’t be negatively impacted in any way at all.

Hi Liz, hope you are doing well. Liz I have silly question I know but I’m really stuck in this problem and I was wondering if you can help me with this issue.. The problem is writing a topic sentence, you said in advanced lectures that topic sentence should be written carefully because it is kind of more important .. Please can you tell me that among these 2 topic sentences of BP1, which one is okay and looks relevant?

1] Although we are living in prosperous times, with people in many countries enjoying a higher standard of living than ever before, there are still millions of people in the world who are living in poverty.

2] Instead of wasting lots of money on exploration of space, governments ought to focus on local problems such as poverty eradication. There are millions of……

Essay statement; Space exploration is a luxury that we cannot afford. Instead of spending billions of dollars on space programs, governments should use this money to fight global problems such as poverty, disease and climate change. To what extent do you agree or disagree with this opinion.

The first step is to underline the key words in the essay question: space exploration, spending billions, fighting global problems (examples). Now make sure your topic sentence covers those aspects. Neither of the topic sentences you have listed really works because, while the second one is obviously more carefully connected to the essay question, it doesn’t leave room for any other paragraph as you are tackling all problems in one paragraph. Also it switches from global problems to local problems which is confusing. However, in terms of which of your sentences connects to the essay question properly, it is the second one. This essay is all about funding for space exploration and whether it is relevant in today’s world or not given all our global problems.

I love your lessons and tips. They are really helpful and you are extraordinarily devoting. Here I have a question about the answer you left under Khola’s comment. What do you mean by “no room left for other paragraphs as you tackled all problems in one paragraph”?

It means that if you put all your ideas into one paragraph, you won’t have any more ideas for other paragraphs. By choosing one main focal point for one paragraph, you have the ability to use other ideas for other paragraphs. So many people say “I can’t think of how to make my essay long enough”. The answer is to be more careful about how you use your ideas. First, brainstorm ideas. Then select the best ideas. Then decide carefully which ideas can go into which paragraph. Then pay attention as to whether some ideas should go together or some ideas should be separated into different paragraphs. There is a lot to think about in the planning stage. It is crucial to plan carefully and strategically.

Electric cars are currently being developed by many well-known automotive companies. Many people still question whether electric cars are a feasible replacement for petrol and diesel-fuelled vehicles. In this essay, I will explore the opinions for and against the use of electric cars and their replacement of petrol and diesel-fuelled cars.

On one hand, electric cars are environment friendly. They require no non-renewable energy and are clean to run and maintain on the road. To support this opinion, recent studies show that the use of electric cars helps to curb pollution in urban and rural areas. Clearly, electric cars are one way to tackle ecological concerns and support a ‘greener’ environment.

On the other hand, electric cars are inconvenient to maintain and to dispose of. The driver of an electric vehicle must recharge his car approximately every 100 kms. In addition, the plutonium battery of an electric car is toxic to the environment and must be safely disposed of through expensive means. In brief, scientists are still exploring ways to produce these types of vehicles so that they are easier to manufacture, maintain and use safely.

To sum up, it’s evident that there are both pros and cons of electric vehicles. Despite the expense of development and the inconvenience of recharging electric cars, I still believe strongly that it is well worth the investment to continue research and production of these vehicles. To conclude, we should remain open, supportive to the use of electric cars and to their development in the future.

Recently i sat for IELTS exam, and the GT Writting Task 2 was about transport and they asked “ Do you think it has more advantages or more disadvantage?”

For this would it be option question or Adv/Disadv question? How is the structure for that type?

I wrote both sides and gave my opinion in the conclusion… but not sure if its right… i got 6.5 for writing.

Also, if you can advise how they ask the questions to determine what type of essay it would be so it can easy for us to identify.

The model essays are to be used for all years of the test. The topics are often recycled and the techniques for essay writing are 100% the same as always. The test format hasn’t changed and neither has the marking. All pages of this site are 100% relevant to the test today.

Hi I booked my test in May 2021 I was just wondering which one is latest book i can refer? I have heard Cambridge books are best but I’m not aware about which version i should go for. Your help would be really appreciated

The IELTS Cambridge books are numbered, at present, from 1 to 15. Number 15 is the most recent and was published in 2020. However, all the books provide useful practice. The general format of the test has not changed. I personally would recommend books from 7 to 15. In July 2021, book 16 will be published.

Hello Liz, this is my first message ever. I would like to thank you for your devotion. Can I start a “ solutions” body in the problem solution essay with “ to get around these problems “ as I found this linking device from the “ new scientist” journal whose translation is seemingly appropriate to that, at least to me.

This means a way to avoid the problem rather that solve the problem. So, it wouldn’t be appropriate for an IELTS essay which asks for solutions. It is better to use: The most effective way to tackle this problem is… X is the way to deal with this issue The answer to solving this problem is ….

In the public version of the IELTS writing marking criteria, some linkers are called mechanical and it limit your band score. Some teachers say words like firstly,On one hand,on the other hand are example. I notice you use such words or phrases in ur sample essays. Are they really mechanical? Can you enlighten on what the band descriptors calls mechanical linker

The linkers themselves are not mechanical. All the linking words you have written are suitable for IELTS up to band score 9. The problem is how people use them. It is there use that becomes mechanical. If you have three paragraphs and each one starts with a linking words: Firstly, Secondly, Thirdly, it is similar to a machine that always does the same thing each time. So, to avoid this you must be flexible. So, use all suitable linking words, but use them flexibly. The mechanical use of linking words is typical of a band 6 in Coherence and Cohesion. This means that if you are aiming for band 7 and above, you need to use signposting more flexibly.

I scored a band 8 overall after about 4 weeks of regular practice.
