Courage to Accept and Dedication to Improve are Two Keys to Success

Mandela's words resonate with the very essence of success, a journey paved with both triumph and tribulations. While ambition and talent drive us forward, true progress blossoms from two interlinked keys: courage to accept and dedication to improve. 

Courage is the audacity to confront fears and accept circumstances , while dedication drives relentless improvement. Courage entails facing fears head-on and embracing vulnerability. It necessitates acceptance of present circumstances, viewing failure as a stepping stone rather than a setback. Dedication fuels continuous improvement, fostering resilience and discipline. It instills a growth mindset, prioritizing long-term goals over instant gratification. 

Together, courage and dedication form a formidable partnership, guiding individuals through the ebbs and flows of life's journey, as evidenced by numerous tales and examples throughout history: 

Thomas Edison , for instance, famously said, "I have not failed. I've just found 10,000 ways that won't work." His persistence and reframing of failure through courage and dedication led to revolutionary inventions.

J.K. Rowling' s initial rejections for her Harry Potter manuscript demonstrate that the path to success is rarely linear. Unexpected detours and challenges can be catalysts for growth if dealt with courage to face failure and dedication to continuously improve. 

According to the famous tale of Eklavya , he not only showcases unwavering loyalty to his Guru but also demonstrates remarkable courage in accepting his circumstances, including the refusal of his Guru and the subsequent insult by Arjuna . Despite these challenges, Eklavya exhibits an unyielding dedication to learning and improving his skills. 

In the political realm, individuals like Malala Yousafzai embody the spirit of courage. Undeterred by the Taliban's threats , she dared to fight for girls' education, sparking a global movement that continues to echo today.  Liberia's first female president, Sirleaf , confronted immense challenges rebuilding her war-torn nation. Despite criticism, she courageously tackled corruption and economic instability, dedicating herself to enhancing governance, education, and healthcare for her people.

India's " Garibi Hatao" (Eradicate Poverty) movement led by former Prime Minister Indira Gandhi exemplifies the nation's courage to accept its socioeconomic challenges and dedication to improving the lives of its citizens. 

In a geopolitical context, recognising the vulnerabilities of relying solely on oil revenues, Saudi Arabia has embarked on ambitious economic reforms especially in sectors like tourism, technology, infrastructure and entertainment. By embracing economic diversification, Saudi Arabia demonstrates courage in acknowledging the need for change and dedication to improving its long-term economic sustainability and resilience in a rapidly evolving global landscape.

Similarly, the social sphere resonates with the fight for LGBTQ+ rights. Edith Windsor's courageous pursuit of marriage equality culminated in the landmark, United States v. Windsor , case demonstrating the transformative power of dedication in the face of societal stigma.

Economically, India's LPG reforms in the 1990s exemplify bold policy decisions fueled by courage of accepting economic downfall and a dedication to improvement. Liberalising trade and investment, privatizing state-owned enterprises, and deregulating the financial sector led to significant economic growth, attracting foreign investment and unleashing entrepreneurial potential.

The ecological landscape also echoes the necessity of courage and dedication. The Chipko Movement in India arose in the 1970s as a grassroots effort to protect forests. Led by environmental activist Sunderlal Bahuguna and inspired by local women, the movement involved embracing trees to prevent their destruction. This act of courage not only raised awareness but also led to government policies recognising the rights of communities in forest management.

In the space domain, despite setbacks with Chandrayaan-2, ISRO's swift announcement and clear execution of Chandrayaan-3 highlight its unwavering courage and dedication.

In the realm of sports, individuals like Virat Kohli epitomized the courage to accept shortcomings after the England Test Series in 2014 and dedication to improve. He transformed criticism into motivation, honed his skills, and led India to historic victories.

In the professional domain, Ashok Khemka, an IAS officer stands a prominent example. Despite facing threats and transfers, he courageously investigated corruption in land deals, unwavering in his dedication to truth and justice.

However, in the pursuit of courage and dedication, individuals often encounter barriers that hinder their progress and inhibit their ability to reach their full potential. One significant barrier is fear—fear of failure, rejection, or uncertainty can paralyze individuals, preventing them from taking risks and stepping outside their comfort zones.  Additionally, societal norms and expectations can serve as barriers, imposing limitations on individuals' aspirations and discouraging them from pursuing their passions. 

Moreover, self-doubt and insecurity can undermine one's confidence and motivation, leading to a lack of commitment and perseverance. Furthermore, external pressures and distractions, such as financial constraints or personal obligations, can divert individuals' focus and energy away from their goals . Overcoming these barriers requires resilience, self-awareness, and a willingness to challenge limiting beliefs and societal norms. By cultivating inner strength, seeking support from others, and staying true to their values and aspirations, individuals can break through these barriers and unleash their full potential with courage and dedication.

Also, this potent duo of courage and dedication requires a crucial companion: wisdom . Blindly pushing forward without self-reflection, adaptability, and a willingness to learn can lead to unintended consequences. Consider Malala's advocacy , which evolved beyond education to encompass broader human rights issues, demonstrating her evolving wisdom always aiming for a little extra.

Today, we all live in a world where the meaning of “success” changes every day. In olden times, earning a living, having a family, or building a house was all considered success. But today’s youth are looking for all this and more to be termed successful.

They want to find meaningful jobs. They want to win the hardest battles within themselves and step out of their comfort zone. They want to travel the world. In spite of all these changes, the essence of achieving success has not changed.

When one does not understand this essence of success, one fails. Success does not and has never come easy. It requires commitment, passion, hard work, and lots of patience. More than anything else, success demands courage. It calls for a will to improve and try again every time one fails. Thus, the courage to accept failures and dedication to improve can be called as the two facets of any kind of success a person wants to achieve in his life. 

The Elements of Courage

What is Courage? Courage is the ability to do something that frightens someone. It is also the strength in the face of pain or failure. Courage is an extremely significant path in the journey of success. Courage is what makes someone choose a difficult path. It is the courage of a sailor that keeps the ship moving in a storm.

One requires the courage to commit to his/her dream and courage is necessary to overcome the different obstacles and work towards his/ her goal. When one fails to achieve the goal, the courage to accept failure and the courage to improve oneself and try again is essential. Let us look deep into what courage is demanded of us on the path to success.

The first significant step where a person has to show courage is when he chooses his goals. It is easy to stay within one’s comfort zone and aim for things within reach, but when one aspires to achieve goals outside his comfort zone and dreams to have things beyond his reach, it takes immense amounts of courage.

The courage shown by Gandhiji to choose to come back to India and join the freedom movement after being pushed off a train in South Africa was a key moment in our freedom struggle. Once a person chooses a goal, he must then have the courage to commit himself to it and work towards it without getting distracted.

Success requires multiple sacrifices. One needs to pass through many obstacles to reach his goal. He must show the courage to not give up irrespective of all these hardships to be able to succeed. 

But, the most important show of courage is required when one fails. It is true that failure is a stepping stone to success. The one without the courage to face failure may put the blame on circumstances and give up. But, only someone with the courage to accept his mistakes in the light of failure can succeed.

We all make mistakes. “To err is human,” said Alexander Pope. We need to look within ourselves to understand what exactly went wrong. It is also a good idea to ask the people around us for suggestions. When someone points out a mistake, we must not be afraid to accept our errors.

Patience is another virtue that is necessary when looking for constructive criticisms. Further, instead of feeling guilty about any actions, we must look at how we can improve ourselves. Let us take the example of a famous businessman Steve Jobs. We all know about his success with Apple.

But do we know that Steve Jobs was fired by the same company after the failure of Apple Lisa in 1983? Steve Jobs accepted his mistake of judgment on the product and continued to work hard. He finally found his way back to the company in 1997 and led it during a period of growth and innovation. Thus, his courage to accept his mistake became his biggest strength. 

This applies to not only individuals and corporate but also to societies and countries. India has always tried to raise its voice against terrorism in world forums. In the light of these attempts, India tried to put Masood Azhar and his terrorist organization Jaish-e-Mohammed in the UNSC 1267 list which would list him as an international terrorist under the UN.

But this move was repeatedly blocked by China. India accepted its failure and continued to improve its strategy and attempts to find ways to convince the world community. Finally, in April 2019, India succeeded after failing almost 6 times. This incident shows the importance of accepting defeat and trying to improve in the journey towards success. 

The Dedication to Improve

As much as the courage to accept is necessary, it is useless without the urge to improve and try again. When one fails by going through a certain method, he should be willing to focus on the flaws of that method and find ways to correct them.

The dedication to improve is an extremely significant step in the path to success. Let us look at civil servant exams aspirants. Most do not clear it in the first attempt. But, to succeed they must have the courage to try again. They must analyze their mistakes and work hard to not repeat them. Only then is success possible. 

When the recent abrogation of Article 370 happened, there were mixed reactions. While some criticized the government’s methods, others applauded the courage. But if we look at the intention of the government, we see one major objective – to improve the conditions of Kashmiris.

The government accepted that Article 370 was being misused and that we must abrogate the same in the path to fight terrorism. Thus, it began preparations to ensure smooth removal of Article 370. The dedication of the government to improve the circumstances at the border forced them to take steps that were beneficial. Here we see that without the dedication to improve, one cannot reach one’s goals. 

The dedication to improve is a process. It begins with taking steps to identify the issues. Let us take the example of Raja Ram Mohan Roy who struggled to bring in social reforms in society. He began by identifying the social norms and practices which were unfair, discriminatory and inhumane.

As flaws are recognized, one must also analyze as to what can be done differently. After realizing the effects of the sati system, Raja Ram Mohan Roy decided to take it upon himself to put an end to the system and legalize widow remarriage.

Then, one must work towards implementing these changes in order to achieve success. Raja Ram Mohan Roy approached the then British government and had discussions and debates to prove his point. Finally, with persistent efforts, one can achieve success. The Bengal Sati Regulation came into existence in 1829 and soon, the Hindu Widow Remarriage Act was passed in 1856. 

From individual successes to achieving societal and national goals, the willingness to improve has been an essential element. Another important aspect of having the courage to accept and dedication to improve is optimism. Optimism is the ability to look at everything in a positive light.

As it is often said, “Life is 10% of what happens to you and 90% of how you react to it.” Thus, optimism makes it possible to think rationally and take effective decisions in the event of a failure. We have seen how the optimism of the LGBTQ+ community led them towards constantly working to decriminalizing Article 377.

Even though the journey had ups and downs, with their courage to accept and dedication to improve their arguments and mobilize support, they finally succeeded. Even now, the community works towards improving LGBTQ+ rights in the country.

Various examples above have proven the importance of courage and dedication to improving the path to success. Similarly, in cases where such courage was not displayed and there was no dedication to improve, success has been few and far off. Let us look at the economic situation of the country.

Both demonetization and GST was implemented with good intention like removing black money or “One Nation One Tax”. But there were some flaws like rate structure. It is not bad to have problems in plans as problems can be resolved and an effective result can be obtained. But, the effective result is possible only when the government accepts these problems.

Instead, reports regarding economic slowdown were not published. No fundamental measures were taken to correct the shortcomings of GST and more importantly, its provisions were not made clear to the general public. Thus, we saw the result in a low GDP growth rate in the coming quarters.

Thus, we see how success is unattainable without the courage to accept and dedication to improve. No plan, process or program can be flawless. The difference between a successful plan and a failed one is how these flaws are handled. As famous playwright George Bernard Shaw said

Stuart Scott was the first Black television presenter to anchor ESPN’s flagship sports program, SportsCenter. Remembered for his use of slang, clever catchphrases and references to Black culture and music, Scott is also credited for effectively changing the language America used to talk about sports. 

But not everyone was a fan. In the early 2000s, he faced a backlash from certain parts of the media, the public and even senior executives at ESPN. Tone the style down, said one boss, or face the consequences. Scott’s response was creative, brilliant and gutsy. He chose to go on air and publicly congratulate his employers for supporting underrepresented aspects of American culture — communities that had not hitherto been championed on TV. This act saved his career while simultaneously advancing Black culture in the U.S. 

A decade later, a medical student, Chris, took a decision that most likely saved a life. When a suicidal patient arrived at the emergency room, Chris pushed the intimidating supervising psychiatrist to order a simple diagnostic. The results revealed a vascular disease to be the root of the problem, and the patient was sent to surgery instead of the psych ward. 

Elsewhere, marketing executive Jackie faced a dilemma. Her organization’s president was opposed to an ambitious sales campaign that she wanted to launch. If it works, he told her, you can keep your job. If not, she would need to look elsewhere. Jackie went ahead with the campaign, which turned out to be the most successful in her organization’s history. She kept her job, though she received little in terms of recognition or thanks. 

What do Stuart Scott, Chris and Jackie have in common?

They all faced a choice: to pursue … or not … an action that could lead to recrimination from their superiors. And each of them chose to step up when most others might not. They chose to act courageously. 

Choosing Courage is subject and title of Darden Professor Jim Detert’s new book. 

An Everyday Guide

In the book, Detert advances a novel idea. Courage, he says, is the lynchpin of leadership. It is courage that determines whether a leader will put leadership skills or toolkits to effective use. It is courage that is absolutely fundamental to solving problems, innovating, pursuing opportunities and safeguarding the welfare of others. And contrary to our common understanding, courage is not the province or responsibility of the few; courage is a skill that can be learned and developed. 

“As a society, we’ve largely accepted the notion that courageous actions are not the norm,” writes Detert. “They happen only when you find extraordinary people in extraordinary situations. This book presents a challenge to that idea. I believe that courage isn’t just about the spectacular, rare acts that get you labeled Time’s Person of the Year. The need for courageous actions falls within the responsibility of every effective leader — and competent courage comes from the choices you make to step up and speak up, and to learn and repeatedly practice specific skills, just like any competence in any domain.” 

Choosing Courage: The Everyday Guide to Being Brave at Work sets out the argument for courage in leadership, warns of the risks of failing to be courageous, explores how courage manifests in the workplace, and examines the strategies, tactics and tools that leaders can deploy to develop the courage competence. 

The book distills everything Detert has learned, he says, in his years of researching organizational behavior, and is fleshed out by scores of personal stories and case studies modeling the kinds of behaviors that are “desperately needed if individuals and businesses are to learn, be healthy and thrive.”

When leaders fail to act courageously, he warns, they risk allowing things like discrimination and abuse to foment, as in the well-documented cases of Wells Fargo or Volkswagen. Unless they step up to solve problems or seize opportunities, they risk employee disengagement or even organizational failure. And not having the courage to innovate can lead to being leap-frogged by nimbler upstarts and those better prepared to adapt in a rapidly evolving digital landscape. 

Self-Worth and 2 Factors

That said, Choosing Courage is not a call to “organizational martyrdom.” Nor does Detert suggest that leaders make themselves vulnerable to every strong emotion or idea. 

“This book is an invitation to consider courageous actions as something that can be done more or less competently, where competence means you increase the chances of accomplishing something positive while decreasing the likelihood of negative personal consequences.”

Detert looks at risks people associate with courageous actions — from the potential to be blackballed, held back or even fired, to the psychological risk-taking of speaking out and up, as well as the dangers of social ostracization. He also describes the benefits of courageous action — for the individual and for others.

And for the individual leader, choosing courage is indelibly linked to two factors that determine self-worth: regrets that may accumulate and your sense of legacy.”

Speaking Truth to Power

Detert explores the most common types of behavior seen as courageous in the workplace, while setting out practical diagnostics and frameworks, as well as tools to maximize positive impact. 

Speaking “truth to power” includes confronting or challenging authority figures and choosing to act with greater autonomy than you might technically have. And it’s not easy. 

In a wage-dependent society, we are pretty much hard-wired to fear power, says Detert. Challenging the boss or defying instructions can be downright terrifying. Yet there are scores of instances of people speaking up and effecting positive results without ruining their careers. And it depends on behavior. 

Going in aggressively or over-defensively is likely to provoke a greater sense of threat or anger than using reason. 

“Say you’ve just been told your team will have no promotions this year. You request a meeting with your boss. You could tell her that you’re sick of defending a pay policy while your team members are being courted by other companies,” notes Detert. “Or you could point out that the decision concerns you because of the risk of losing strategic talent. Which behavior or approach is likely to elicit the more positive response?”

Speaking truth to power, says Detert, takes courage. But it also takes thinking deeply about how to behave — how to frame and communicate with superiors to achieve better results. And though we cannot necessarily predict or guarantee outcomes, there are other benefits to speaking up. 

“We know that people are most inspired when they see their own boss stand up to his or her own boss(es), be it about unacceptable interpersonal behavior or unethical or illegal behavior. We’re also highly impressed when our boss goes to bat for us to those above him or her, or defends or takes the hit for us with higher-ups in order to protect our well-being.”

A Personal Choice

Of course, the converse is also true. The data also show that bosses do a great deal of motivational harm by not acting; when they fail to speak up or take other action on egregious workplace practices or behaviors. 

“If you think people don’t notice your inaction or aren’t bothered because they know it’s really hard to do these things, the data suggest you should think again,” says Detert.

Ultimately the decision to choose courage is a personal one, says Detert. It is down to the individual to choose whether to be the change they wish to see, as Ghandi encouraged. 

Choosing Courage sets out a road map for building the skill of courage and increasing the chances of having maximum impact in doing so.

It takes courage to reduce of the routine and embrace the new, but it can be well worth the effort.   • We need to look within and around to foresee our mistakes or the kind of acts that we are performing.
  • We should not react so hard once our acts are termed wrong by others.
  • We need to be patient enough to look for our acts when there exists criticism.
  • We need to have a self-analysis pointing out the acts and its effects.
  • Once we realize that some acts are wrong, we must accept them and we need to make sure that we cannot hold ourselves to search for the reasons to make the wrong acts to be correct.
  • We should pacify our guiltiness of doing those acts and look for rectifying those mistakes.
  • Agreeableness to the acts make us courageous enough to seek upon various options to make correct decisions.
  • Once we implement the correct decision, it will lead to further improvement.
  • As improvement happens, the fruits of success can be tasted.

There are yet other things that rely on unlocking the success with the keys of courage to accept and decision to improve. Optimism – the way to look upon everything in a positive way. The decision must be practical and reliable enough that ensures the perfect probability of happening with extreme correctness. Self-consciousness – must in doing things to maintain the ease of upgrading; and many more. Procrastination is also a big threat to success. Keeping these things in mind, we can pursue success.

Introduction

Success has been defined in different words by different experts. However, success, no matter what, implies movement from the present state to a better or more improved state. A primary condition to success is the dedication to succeed or the dedication to improve. But all our dedication and efforts will come to naught, if we do not know what exactly we want to improve upon. In fact, that is the case with most of people. They want success but are not ready to accept the area where their potential for success lies. Therefore, most often we mess up our efforts towards achieving success with our ostrich like approach.

The Enemy of Success

What is it that we do not want to face? What is it that we do not have the courage to accept? No man is perfect. We all have follies and weaknesses. There are ghosts haunting some dark recesses of our minds. We do not want to confront them. We fear the acceptance of those weaknesses and realities will crumble our personality and dent our reputation. We ignore our limitations and let the delusion grow into a huge monster, our greatest enemy of success. We needn’t worry about others who tell us we cannot succeed. The real enemy of our success lies within us. It works with a grand strategy. It offers us everything that may look attractive. It gives us intoxicants and bad habits. It robs us of our critical ability to think and question. In the process, we go on adding numberless weaknesses that we never think about; and eventually suffer to realize success has drifted irretrievably far from us. The enemy within is not done yet. It next robs us of our courage to accept this. So long as we do not accept, we fail to see the demons that have taken control of our mind and courage; and, finally, languish in the hell of our making with no motivation to improve.

Success Needs Courage

Given that no man, howsoever great, is ever perfect, the successful ones are those that sooner or later confront their inner enemies head on. Gandhi, the apostle of non-violence, was not free from vices either; only, he was courageous enough to accept the flaws of his character and to make a concerted effort to overcome all of those. That was how he could move ahead on the path of success. In his autobiography, Gandhi describes his addiction to smoking, fascination with the western lifestyle, and consumption of meat and alcohol. He also tells us of his realization that became the turning point in his life. Gandhi writes that he once used violence on his wife and felt so ashamed that he vowed non-violence for life, by letter and spirit. How many of us have an act of similar courage to accept our weaknesses as Gandhi had? Gandhi was Gandhi not so much for his merits as for his courage to accept his faults. Let us see this point more clearly in the context of the Chauri Chaura incident. Gandhi was proud that he had been leading a non-violent non-cooperation movement in India. Since non-violence was his principled stand, he did not want to comprise with it to the slightest extent. The non-cooperation movement had been highly successful so far, and the freedom movement leaders were confident that it had shaken the British might. Then, violence broke out at Chauri Chaura. Since the movement was at its peak, no Indian leader favored withdrawing it for one odd incident. But, Gandhi insisted that the movement had to be instantly withdrawn because the violence had said it loud and clear, that it was a failure. Ultimately, the movement was withdrawn. It shows Gandhi’s unusual courage to accept. It takes more courage to accept failure when someone is at the peak of the success. It is clear, Gandhi’s experiment with non-violence became so successful mainly because he had the twin traits – the courage to accept and dedication to improve.

What is true of Gandhi’s life is true of everyone’s life. What is true of big movements based on strong ideologies like non-violence is also true of simple things in life. We all are victims of bad habits that may be ignored by others and us. Some of us speak lies. Some of us make excuses. Some of us don’t mind cheating in an exam, if help comes by. Some of us are never on time. Some of us lack discipline and punctuality. In other words, nearly all of us are victims of one or more of these small follies that remain with us life-long because we have neither faced them or accepted them courageously nor dedicated ourselves to improve. In fact, we fail to realize that what we call these minor issues can cause enormous damage. A habitual liar, if unchecked, turns into a big liar and gets caught on the wrong side of the law someday. Those who get away with excuses after committing a wrong get tempted to commit a bigger wrong every time and are very likely to end up as wanted criminals. When we lack the courage to accept, we are slowly also building resistance against what we do not want to accept. When we have built up a strong resistance, we would have also crossed the stage of a dilemma with the result that we then proudly wear our weakness on our sleeve. It is a self-destructive stance, and it blinds us to the ultimate doom we would invariably be heading to. However, it is never too late; and one gets several opportunities to accept and amend.

In a nutshell, if we want to succeed in any endeavor, we must introspect and determine where we stand in that domain. If I want to be a successful singer, I must introspect to judge without bias where I stand.  There may be some aspects of singing I would be weak in. If I have the courage to accept the reality, it will help me dedicate my efforts to improve upon that weakness. Success will not elude me then.

If I only had one strength that I could choose, I would choose resilience. Resilience is the shock absorber for tough times, and there surely will be tough times occasionally. The only people who don’t experience bumpy waters are people who are not doing anything. The rest of us are out there trying to do outsized things and that, by definition is fraught with danger and the very real possibility of failure. Sometimes that failure is public. Sometimes it’s private. But either way, it always hurts.

And, when it stings like that it is hard not to think about giving up, no matter how brave we are or how committed. Heartbreak can send us into a tailspin emotionally. Resilience is the tool that helps us level off and find smooth air and keep flying. Without it every failure would stop us dead in our tracks.

I loved Angela Duckworth’s book, Grit. Her thesis is really powerful: No matter our backgrounds or educational institution or family or how we were brought up, only one thing truly determines our success or failure in this life. It’s the ability to finish.

Resilience is the key to finishing. It shows up in our self-talk. When we fail there are always people around us who feel bad for us and some of them, though well meaning, might even suggest that we abandon our mission and find another one, one that is less difficult and less risky. That’s when we should begin to talk to ourselves about all of it. Cue the Rocky music! We can do this! While we pick ourselves up off the mat you can almost see our lips moving as we deliver the internal speech that helps reset us, that reminds us that we are just the right person (maybe even the only person) who can get this done.

Another key to resilience is to find at least one other person who believes that we can do it, whatever it is. You know who I am talking about. These are true believers. They don’t roll their eyes when you say you are planning to (fill in the blank here with the requisite over-the-moon task). Yes, they’ll be honest, but what they really want to do is to look you straight in the eye and tell you how great you are and how you can finish the task. I love those people! And, I have to say that I have had more than my share of them though the years.

One time, back when I first began my speaking career, I spoke at a big Inc. Magazine event. The attendees were told to rank all the speakers at the event when it was over. I found out that I was dead last! I was embarrassed and I started second guessing myself a little. It shook me. Rattled, I called a good friend, one of those people who really believed in me but who I knew wouldn’t spare my feelings to tell the unvarnished truth. He suggested that I take myself to the woodshed and spend some time thinking about what went wrong and get busy fixing it. No mention of quitting or walking away. Not once.

I did exactly that and a couple of years later I mustered up my courage to go back to the very same guy who booked me in the Inc. event before. When I called him, I got a very nice surprise. He told me that he had been hearing great things lately about a speaker out there on the circuit. That speaker? Me.

I went back and hit it out of the park.

That was a great lesson for me. I came from some pretty small beginnings, but I have always stretched myself to do more and be more. Today I have written six books and I am a board member of a NYSE company. From where I started that would have been unthinkable.

But here’s why it happened. I was relentless. I figured out my mission and I never stopped pursuing it, even to this day. I have weathered some wicked storms along the way.

Resilience has been my shelter. Make it yours too. Stay with it. Fix your self-talk so that if nobody else is around you can make yourself believe that it’s all okay and that you can still win. Find at least one friend who feels the same way.

Then, get going. It’s a great big world out there. It needs what you have to offer. Make a difference, because you can.

Success is often defined as the ability to reach your goals in life, whatever those goals may be. In some ways, a better word for success might be attainment, accomplishment, or progress. It is not necessarily a destination but a journey that helps develop the skills and resources you need to thrive.

At a Glance

There are many different tactics for how to be successful in life, but the strategy that works best for you may depend on what success means to you . If you think of success as doing well at work or earning a high salary, your professional goals and accomplishments will take priority.

While professional success can be one piece of the puzzle, it leaves out many other important areas of life. Family, romantic relationships, academics, and athletics are just a few areas where people may strive for success. Your definition of success may vary, but many might define it as being fulfilled, happy, safe, healthy, and loved.

While there is no single right way to be successful, you can improve your chances by building a growth mindset, improving your emotional intelligence, developing mental toughness, and strengthening your willpower, among other strategies.

Because goals are self-created, what people view as success can vary depending on their needs, goals, and situation. There may not be a perfect combination of ingredients that can guarantee success. Still, there are some basic steps you can follow that can improve your chances of being successful in life, love, work, or whatever happens to be important to you.

Research by psychologist Carol Dweck suggests that there are two basic mindsets that influence how people think about themselves and their abilities: the fixed mindset and the growth mindset .

People who possess a fixed mindset believe that things such as intelligence are static and unchangeable. Those with a fixed mindset believe that success isn't a result of hard work—it's simply a consequence of innate talents.

Because they believe that such talents are something people are either born with or without, they tend to give up more easily in the face of a challenge. They quit when things do not come easily because they believe that they lack the inborn skills needed to excel.

Those who have a growth mindset, on the other hand, feel that they can change, grow, and learn through effort. People who believe that they are capable of growth are more likely to achieve success. When things get tough, they look for ways to improve their skills and keep working toward success.

People with a growth mindset believe that they have control of their life, while those with a fixed mindset believe that things are out of their control.

What can you do to build a growth mindset?

  • Believe that your efforts matter . Rather than thinking their abilities are fixed or stuck, people who have a growth mindset believe that effort and hard work can lead to meaningful growth.
  • Learn new skills . When faced with a challenge, they look for ways to develop the knowledge and skills that they need to overcome and triumph.
  • View failures as learning experiences . People with growth mindsets don't believe that failure is a reflection of their abilities. Instead, they view it as a valuable source of experience from which they can learn and improve. "That didn't work," they might think, "so this time I'll try something a little different."

Overall intelligence has long been believed to be one factor contributing to success in different areas of life, but some experts suggest that emotional intelligence may actually matter even more.   Emotional intelligence refers to the ability to understand, utilize, and reason with emotions. Emotionally intelligent people are able to understand not only their own emotions, but those of others as well.

To improve your emotional intelligence:

  • Pay attention to your own emotions . Focus on identifying what you are feeling and what is causing those feelings.
  • Manage your emotions . Step back and try to view things with an impartial eye. Avoid bottling up or repressing your feelings, but look for healthy and appropriate ways of dealing with what you are feeling.
  • Listen to others. This not only involves hearing what they are saying, but also paying attention to nonverbal signals and body language.

Mental toughness refers to the resilience to carry on and continue trying even in the face of obstacles. People who possess this mental strength see challenges as opportunities. They also feel that they have control over their own destiny, are confident in their abilities to succeed, and are committed to finishing what they start.

What can you do to improve your mental toughness and increase your chances of being successful in life?

  • Believe in yourself . Cut out negative self-talk and look for ways to stay positive and self-encouraging.
  • Keep trying . Even when things seem impossible or setbacks keep holding you back, focus on ways that you can develop your skills and keep soldiering forward. One of the key habits of successful people is always looking at setbacks or failures as learning opportunities.
  • Care for yourself . Staying strong also means that you treat yourself with kindness. Check in with yourself regularly to ensure you have the things you need to thrive.
  • Look for growth opportunities . Learning more about yourself and challenging yourself to try new things can provide opportunities for self-discovery.

In a long-running longitudinal study, psychologists followed a group of children who were identified by their teachers as highly intelligent. As they compared how these subjects fared throughout childhood and into adulthood, researchers found that those who ultimately were the most successful in life shared some key characteristics, including perseverance and willpower.  

These characteristics tend to be part of an individual's overall personality, but they are also something you can improve. Delayed gratification , learning to persist in the face of challenges, and waiting for the rewards of your hard work can often be the key to success in life.

Strategies you can use to improve your willpower include:

  • Distraction . For example, if you are trying to lose weight but are having a difficult time staying away from your favorite snacks, distracting yourself during your moments of weakness can be an effective way to avoid giving in to temptation.
  • Practice . Willpower is something you can build, but it takes time and effort. Start by making small goals that require will power to achieve, such as avoiding sugary snacks. As you build your ability to use your will power to achieve such small goals, you may find that your willpower is also stronger when working on much larger goals.

What is it that motivates you the most? Do you find that the promise of external rewards keeps you reaching for your goals, or is it the more personal, intrinsic motivators that keep you feeling inspired? While extrinsic rewards such as money, awards, and praise can be helpful, many people find that they are most motivated when they are doing things for personal satisfaction.

If you are doing things because you enjoy them, because you find them meaningful, or because you enjoy seeing the effects of your work, then you are driven by intrinsic motivations. Research has shown that while incentives can be a better predictor of some types of performance, intrinsic motivators tend to be better at predicting performance quality.  

While it is often the external motivators that get people started, it is the internal motivators that kick in and keep people going in order to maintain those new behaviors.

What can you do to boost your sense of intrinsic motivation?

  • Challenge yourself . Pursuing a goal that is achievable but not necessarily easy, is a great way to increase motivation to succeed. Challenges can keep you interested in a task, improve your self-esteem, and offer feedback on areas you can improve on. Choosing a slightly challenging task will help motivate you to get started—it feels exciting!
  • Stay curious . Look for things that grab your attention and that you want to learn more about.
  • Take control . It can be difficult to stay intrinsically motivated to pursue a goal if you don't feel that you have any real influence over the outcome. Look for ways that you can take an active role.
  • Don't fear competition . There might be other people trying to reach the same goals as you, but this doesn't mean you should give up. Don't compare your progress or journey to anyone else's. You can look to others for motivation and inspiration, but remember that we all have different paths.

Successful people know that they need to start by having attainable goals to achieve. These goals are not necessarily easy to reach, but by having something to aim for, you will be better able to move forward and overcome obstacles.

When setting goals :

  • Be as specific as possible : Choosing a goal like "I'm going to spend 20 minutes a day learning a new language" is more achievable than setting a general goal like "I'm going to learn French."
  • Break your goal into smaller steps : Even if you select a specific goal, it can often seem difficult to achieve. Try breaking it into smaller steps that allow you to focus on moving forward without becoming overwhelmed.
  • Reward progress : Recognize your successes along the way and allow yourself to enjoy your accomplishments.

One of the biggest reasons people don't follow through on their goals [is] because they aren't what THEY want to do. Make sure your goals align with your personal values and needs, not what you 'think' you should do.

Psychologists have long attempted to link specific traits or personality characteristics to success in life and work. The Myers-Briggs Type Indicator (MBTI) is one widely used assessment that is often utilized by businesses to screen job candidates. However, research often fails to show that the MBTI actually correlates to performance.  

According to some more recent research, there are certain traits that tend to be consistently tied to success.   Researchers Ian MacRae and Adrian Furnham have identified six key traits that can play a role in how well people do at work.   However, they note that there are optimal levels of these traits. Too little of these characteristics can hinder success, but so can having too much.

If you are trying to learn how to be successful in life, consider what you can do to nurture these key traits:

Conscientiousness

Conscientious people consider the effects of their actions. They also consider how other people will react and feel. You can nurture this trait by:

  • Thinking about the consequences of actions
  • Considering other people's perspectives

Accepting of Ambiguity

Life is full of situations that are not always clear. People with a great deal of potential for success are better able to accept this ambiguity. Rather than being rigid and inflexible, they are ready to adapt when the unexpected comes their way. You can learn to embrace ambiguity by:

  • Challenging your perspectives and considering opinions and ideas other than your own
  • Not fearing the unfamiliar
  • Being willing to change
  • Valuing diversity

Capable of Adjustment

In addition to being able to accept ambiguity, success often hinges on the ability to quickly adjust to change. You can nurture this ability to adjust by:

  • Reframing difficult situations, to see them as opportunities to learn and grow rather than simply obstacles to live through
  • Being open to change; when plans or situations change, step back and look at ways to cope

The world's most successful people often exemplify great courage. They are willing to take risks, even in the face of potential failure. Research suggests that courageous people utilize positive emotions to overcome fear.   You can improve your tolerance of risk by:

  • Quelling negative emotions and focusing on more positive feelings
  • Balancing risk with common sense; being cautious and pragmatic can also pay off, depending upon the situation

People who are successful tend to be curious about the world around them. They are always eager to learn more, including new knowledge and skills. You can cultivate your sense of curiosity by:

  • Relating tasks to your interests: If you find filing boring, for example, look for a more efficient way to categorize the information to play to your strengths as an organizer.
  • Learning new things

Competitiveness

Successful people are able to utilize competition to motivate, but avoid falling prey to jealousy. You can nurture a healthy sense of competition by:

  • Focusing on your own improvements; rather than worry about being the best at something, pay attention to your progress
  • Being happy when others succeed

Some personality traits and types may be better suited for certain jobs than others. However, no specific personality trait can guarantee success, nor can being low in that trait doom someone to failure.

While there are differences in opinion on just how much personality can be altered , nurturing some of these high potential traits might help you develop skills that can serve you well in many different aspects of your life.

Doing things alone can be difficult, but having a strong social support system can make things easier. Different types of social support can be important for success.

  • Emotional support can provide the comfort, security, and empathy you need as you face challenges.
  • Esteem support can boost your confidence and encourage you to keep going.
  • Informational support can provide mentorship, advice, and other necessary resources to reach your goals.
  • Tangible support can help you in active and practical ways. This might involve someone helping you perform a task or taking care of the task for you.

Having even one close person in your life that you feel you can go to in any circumstance is more helpful for your relational well-being than having 10 friends who are surface level. It's about quality, not quantity.

Mentors, friends, co-workers, and family members can cheer you on when things get tough and even offer advice and assistance that can help you improve your chances for success.

Burnout can happen when you are exposed to chronic stress . It can seriously impede success and lead to exhaustion, cynicism, and reduced performance.  

Reduced motivation makes it harder to stick to your goals and can make you feel apathetic and uninterested.

Self-care strategies, such as getting enough sleep and engaging in healthy eating, can relieve some stress. But addressing burnout often requires getting to the bottom of the issue that is causing the problem.

Sometimes, this might mean reassessing your goals. If your goals are creating too much stress or if you are trying to achieve too much too fast, it can be a recipe for burnout. Look for ways to reduce stress, whether that involves shifting your goals, changing your plans, or even doing something more significant like moving somewhere else or changing jobs.

Keep in Mind

There is no single measure of success, and certainly no single answer for how to be successful in life. Yet by looking at some of the habits of successful people, you can learn new tactics and strategies to implement in your own daily life. Cultivate and nurture these abilities, and over time you may find that you are better able to reach your goals and achieve the success you want in life.

The Courage to Keep Going

How do we gain the courage to never give up even when facing persistent hardship?

We often feel tempted to quit when we're in the middle of such difficult circumstances, but giving up is not consistent with who we are as followers of Jesus Christ. Dr. Stanley shares how the apostle Paul is a perfect example of someone who never gave up despite persistent difficulty and hardship.

Sermon Outline

We all need encouragement at times, especially when hardships weigh us down. That’s why it helps to remember the endurance Paul had when doing the Lord’s work. In this week’s sermon, Dr. Stanley explains how that strength is available to us, too.

Key Passage: 2 Timothy 4:1-8

Supporting Passages: Psalm 32:8; Proverbs 3:5-6; Acts 13:47; 2 Corinthians 11:22-27; Galatians 6:14; Philippians 1:12; Philippians 1:21; Philippians 4:13

How do you respond in painful situations? Even when tempted to give up and walk away, we must remember that, as God’s people, we’re called to a life of patient endurance.

► “If you’re in the process of giving up on your marriage, your job, your children, or your finances, ask yourself, ‘Does quitting fit who I am as a follower of Jesus?’”

When God has called you to do something …

It’s not the time to give up and quit.

There is an answer or a solution for whatever it is God wants to do in your life.

You should do it until He calls you to do something else.

What were Paul’s motivations to keep going?

The awareness of God’s presence

Paul experienced many trials (2 Cor. 11:23-27).

Even when times are tough, we—like the apostle—must believe and say that the Lord is with us (Heb. 13:5). If we doubt God, our strength might waver.

The experience of God’s strength

When we feel weak, we’re more likely to quit. This is why Jesus gave us the Holy Spirit.

For any situation in life, we have the same strength Paul had—that of Almighty God.

The assurance of God’s will

Paul knew the Father had sent him to preach the gospel. That gave him great persistence.

To be able to “keep on keeping on,” we must know that we’re doing what God says to do (Ps. 32:8; Prov. 3:5-6).

The overflowing joy that results from obedience

Paul was able to rejoice because he knew he was in the Father’s will. (See Phil. 4:4.)

God wants the best for His children and will turn all things to our good if we respond rightly.

The life-changing lessons God teaches

Paul went to Arabia to hear directly from the Lord. What he learned there helped him write much of the New Testament.

Instead of quitting, we can think about how sharing what we learn can help others.

The reward God promised

Raising children, working hard, sharing our faith, and giving to the Lord’s work delight our heavenly Father.

There’s never a legitimate reason for believers to give up on something God is calling them to do.

The vision of the cross

Paul attributed everything he had to the work done on the cross of Jesus Christ (Gal. 6:14).

God does not overlook our obedience and willingness to “keep on keeping on.”

Love and devotion to Jesus Christ

Paul said that for him, to live was for Christ to live in and through him (Phil. 1:21).

When people meet us, they need to see Christ in us.

Difficult times require a choice to live courageously.

We can’t give up. Instead, we must believe God will do what He says.

We can pray, “Lord, I’m going to trust Your promise never to leave me. I believe You always tell the truth.”

After Watching

Recite Psalm 28:7, Isaiah 40:29, or 2 Thessalonians 3:3 aloud when you’re feeling weak, and meditate on the strength that’s yours in Christ.
