Model Answer 1

A pivotal moment that redefined my life occurred during the summer of 2018, in the serene surroundings of a mountain retreat. This life-altering event was not marked by grand fanfare; instead, it was a quiet realization during a meditation retreat. The change was profound yet subtle – it was the embracement of mindfulness and a newfound appreciation for the present moment.

Before this experience, my life was in constant fast-forward, with my mind perpetually racing from one worry to the next. It was during a session of guided meditation, enveloped by the tranquil mountain air and the gentle rustling of leaves, that I experienced a profound sense of peace. This tranquility was not merely the absence of noise; it was an awakening to the beauty of the present.

This transformation has had lasting effects on my life. Embracing mindfulness has allowed me to approach daily challenges with calmness and clarity. Stressful situations, which previously overwhelmed me, now seem manageable as I have learned to maintain a composed and focused mind. This change has enhanced my interpersonal relationships as well; I listen more attentively, respond more thoughtfully, and appreciate the nuances of communication. Moreover, this shift has positively influenced my career, where the ability to remain present and composed under pressure is invaluable.

In essence, the change was not just in my actions, but in my perspective. The realization that living in the moment is not just a phrase, but a transformative practice, has been the cornerstone of this positive shift. This journey towards mindfulness has not only enriched my personal experiences but has also imbued me with a sense of serenity and purpose, attributes that have significantly enhanced the quality of my life.

Your chance of acceptance, your chancing factors, extracurriculars, how should i describe a life event in my essay that prepared me for college.

So I'm drafting my college essay and I've got this life event that really impacted me and I think it shows I'm ready for college. But how do I describe it in a way that's compelling and not just telling a story? Any advice from those who tackled something similar?

When you're describing a life event in your college essay, it's important to focus on reflection, rather than merely recounting the event. Think about how this experience has shaped your perspective, influenced your goals, or contributed to your character development.

Start by setting the scene to engage the reader, then swiftly move to express how this event was pivotal in your personal growth. Show rather than tell; for example, if you're writing about how you overcame a challenge, detail the steps you took and the resourcefulness or resilience you displayed with active descriptions and action rather than a passive explanation. You want to make it clear why this event makes you a strong candidate for college by connecting it to attributes like determination, leadership, or a passion for learning. Remember to close your essay by looking forward; explain how the event has prepared you for the challenges of college and beyond, and how it will inform your contributions to the college community.

A Memorable Event In My Life Essay

A Memorable Event In My Life There are some events that happen in our lives that are so remarkable that they continue to linger in our minds, such events usually leave a permanent mark in our lives and often influence major decisions in our lives. Such an event took place in my life several years ago, when I accompanied my grandmother to hospital for her surgery. This event stands out in particular because it had the greatest impact in my life. My mother died from pancreatic cancer at the age of 33, 2 days before my 7th birthday, after which I had developed an irrational fear of hospitals and doctors. During my school years I lived with my father and grandmother in New Delhi, the capital city of India. The incident took place during summer …show more content…

“Look, my child, agree to what your father says, God Almighty will guide you.” I was reluctant, but then, I had no other choice but to agree. The days prior to surgery were terrible, anxiety affected my ability to perform daily tasks; I stopped going out with friends, stopped engaging in favorite hobbies, and stopped taking care of my personal appearance. I tried to convince myself several times, that grandma’s surgery was more complicated and serious than my …show more content…

I stayed in the room, nearly paralyzed by fear, I thought I was going to faint. Then I heard this voice say, “relax child, everything is going to be fine, your grandmother is in safe hands.” It was the operating doctor; I faced him and tried my best to mask my emotions and put up a brave face. He was friendly, compassionate, confident and assuring, and talking to him made me feel better. Luckily, there were several helpful nurses and other hospital staff available to offer any assistance that my grandmother required. They sensed the high level of anxiety I was feeling, and they talked to me so nicely that I started to relax. However, my fear was so severe that each time I tried to relax; some bad thought came to my

Personal Narrative: Post-Seizure Fatigue

I might always have health issues, and I may not ever be able to relax. However, that struggle and that desire to overcome has inspired me not only to get back to the person I was before the surgeries, but to better myself because of it. It’s that drive that inspires me to stay up studying well after the sun has set, to endure the pain during my physical therapy sessions, and most importantly to see that everyone must overcome adversity no matter how much it may affect their life. I see the way my mother put her entire universe on hold to care for me, and how agonizing that must have been to watch her daughter nearly slip away. I see the little girl with the plaid comforter, she was so tough, hoisting a smile onto her face when the rest of her body was in so much pain.

Personal Narrative: Day Two Clinicals

I feel so bad for this patient. As we were changing her dressing. I had the patient go to her happy place in which she talk to me about. She was on the beach with us (those whom were in the room) and we were all building sand castles with her. This was a nice non medicine therapeutic technique and she said she loved talking to me about her happy place.

Personal Narrative: Miranda V. Arizona

My “patience room studying” continued for another ten minutes before a nurse came out of the room calling my name. My father put down the newspaper he was reading and pointed to me and she managed to spot us from the large crowd that was present, we got up and followed her and she directed us to a room with a plaque posted front and centre on the door, reading “Dr. Hoffman, Neurology” . My father and I sat in the empty room and waited I told him I was nervous that something might be wrong and he replied “khoda nakoneh”, Farsi for god forbid. Five minutes passed and then a woman quickly walked in and closed the door behind her. It was Dr.Hoffman.

Dental Assistant Personal Statement

When the patients would start talking more it was an indicator to me that they were trying to put a hold on the procedure. I would try to help them as much as I could, by explaining what I will be doing and how it will help them. I will have to work on working with anxiety to help me overcome this

A Career As A Medical Assistant Application Essay

When I was seven years old my mother was diagnosed with an acoustic neuroma. Although I had had my fair share of doctor visits prior to this event I did not remember them, I do however remember visiting my mother in the hospital and watching those close to her become her caretakers in the following months. In the years succeeding, I had my tonsils removed and countless sinus surgeries to relieve my allergy suffering. It wasn’t until I was on the other side, as the patient, that I realized how much I appreciated the work the health care providers were doing. Doctors, nurses, and other medical professionals made me feel comfortable and explained each procedure to me in a way I could understand while not getting frightened.

Personal Narrative: Living With Chiari

After arriving at the hospital at 6 a.m., I was prepped and taken to pre-op, where I had to wait for my doctors to take my back. The wait was excruciating, I kept looking around the corner, anticipating when the doctors would walk through my door to tell me it was time. My surgery was scheduled to start at 9 a.m., but there was a delay and I wasn’t taken back until 2 p.m. When the surgeons finally came into my room and told me it was time, my anxiety was off the charts. I barely had enough time to say goodbye to my husband and my mom before the anesthesiologist put twilight medicine in my IV, I don’t remember anything after that. Later on, my husband told me I was crying as the surgeons rolled me down the hallway and saying how much I loved

Personal Narrative: How Hurricane Katrina Changed My Life

Out of the many events of my life that have molded me to aspire to be a physician, a humid August day in 2003 would be the pivotal moment that introduced me into the path of medicine. My father, brother, and I had been working on the front of our house to add on a porch, when my mother pulled up from receiving a routine chest x-ray due to her having influenza, and even as a nine year old child, I could tell by her expression as she approached us that something had gone terribly wrong. With anguish in her eyes, she said, “They found two spots on my lung, and they say it might be cancer.” and in that instant, my world began to collapse in on me. All I understood about cancer at such a young age was that it killed people, devastated lives, and

Personal Narrative Ulcerative Colitis

While this was expected, my emotional and mental health also took a toll. I was drained and overwhelmed after the continual spew of information from the doctors. The feelings of sickness and worry was making it hard to do much of anything, especially when at school. It was evident that constantly thinking about the problems that could arise was not helping me complete everything that had to be done. My life continued to spiral as I struggled to keep up with my physical and emotional health on top of the mountain of work expected from me.

Life In Vietnam Essay

My grandma, at the time, was sick with a liver disease. Throughout the whole trip, my grandma cried from the pain the infection caused. My mom stated, “It was agonizing. I couldn’t do anything for her except just to watch.” Nevertheless, a Vietnamese doctor escorted my grandma throughout the entire journey.

Personal Narrative: From Coming To America

January 11, 2013, I wake up to yelling, prayers, and crying. I walked into the kitchen where all the noises were coming from and I found my mother on the floor crying, talking on the phone with my godmother. My father was there by her side, trying hard not to cry while supporting his wife. I didn’t know what was happening, this was the first time I’ve seen my mom so vulnerable and broken. My parents didn’t tell me anything other than my grandmother was in critical condition at the hospital, but with god's help she would overcome this hard time.

Personal Narrative: My ACL Tear Journey At The Hospital

The lady then looked at the paper and realized it was wrong and started to laugh and said “ I am so sorry I wrote the wrong one down.” I knew that if I didn 't notice the papers they would have done surgery on my right knee instead of the left knee. I was moved to another room where other people were surrounded by nurses getting prepared for surgery. The moment I was stationed in my room I was surrounded by different nurses. There was the anesthetic nurse, the head nurse, the assistant nurses and even the nurses that are in training.

Examples Of Being Thankful Essay

When they did the doctor proved my grandma was correct and from there I was rushed to the hospital. I am very close to my grandma she has been a huge part of my life every since I opened my eyes. She moved from Egypt to America when my sister was born and decided to stay here instead of going back to Egypt. When I was little we would play all sorts of games together. We used to sit together and she would tell me stories of her life in egypt and all what she would do daily.

Life is full of experiences, and those experiences creates memories that last forever. Memories are there to remind you about the special moments in your life, which we should cherish. Weather that specific memory made or break you, it is something that we can never forget. As for me graduating high school is a memory that I will never forget because in the previous years I dropped out but still managed to go back and complete where I left off. My willpower gave me a chance to redeem myself and in the process I managed to complete high school with a 4.0 GPA and I got accepted into college to fulfil my career goal. Due to those reasons graduating high school was the most memorable event in my life. In my sophomore year of high school my mother was diagnosed with a rare heart disease called Variant angina. Variant angina are similar chest pains; it occurs when your heart stops receiving blood from your blood vessels. If you work while being diagnosed with this condition your chances of life begins to decrease at that moment. This meant that my mother chances of working will no longer emerge. She was advised by her physician to lay off of work for the rest of her life if she wanted to live to see her children grow. This meant that it was impossible for her to continue to pay for my school expenses. During the months, money became an issue and sooner than I thought my school fees began to pile up. My mother did not have the fees to cover so it led me to drop out of high school.

Medical Assistant Personal Statement

My mother was diagnosed with a tumor in her abdomen. This took a tremendous toll on me over the course of the next year. Family is everything to me. My mother is my everything. This sudden shift of my focus was reflected in my poor grades. The high school experience is something that will forever dominate the psyche of most American adults. It was an unforgettable time of fun, rebel-rousing, summer loves and parties. The Event That Changed My Life Essay

There have been very few events throughout my lifetime that I feel have impacted or inspired me with such noteworthiness and that I know will change my outlook on the world and affect me forever. One of those events occurred when I traveled to Portugal, my parent’s homeland. From this excursion in 2007, I learned the importance of family, most importantly the distant kind. It provided me with a totally different perspective on the world and how large and extended one’s family can really be; even across cultures and continents. I felt so fortunate learning this lesson at a young age and growing to appreciate the ideals I was brought up with as a child. The family I have in Portugal has always been there; however, their faces have aged and

My Most Memorable Event Essay

My most memorable childhood event was when I was 15 years old. It was the Fourth of July. A big family vacation a barbeque, over night stay and out of town trip to six flags, and I had a blast the night before me, my mom, sisters and brother packed our bags to stay the night over my cousin house in Goodlettsville ,Tennessee. She had the biggest house ever I thought it was a mansion; six bedrooms two an half bath, a swimming pool, a game/movie room with a nice big kitchen. It was something that I was not use, knowing that we stayed in a three bedroom based on an income apartment on the East side of Nashville.

The end of school came eventually, and I abandoned dreams of the sixth grade. Luckily, I was transferring to another elementary school, but this offered me little consolation. Only dummies have to repeat a grade.

The Most Important Day Of My Life

The day I graduated high school is the most important day of my life because I experienced a euphoric feeling. The excessive weight on my shoulders was released and I felt relieved. Throughout high school, I endured many sleepless nights due to homework that piled up because I was horrible at time-management. Also, procrastination always got the best of me and I spent many late nights drinking coffee to stay awake in order to study for quizzes and finals. High school definitely challenged me and I developed into a new version of myself after I graduated. My graduation day was a rollercoaster of emotions because I was anxious on the drive to school because of the tremendous amount of traffic. Naturally, stress came over me as I was about to arrive late to my own graduation. Truthfully, I was running late because I spent so much time straightening my thick, curly hair and applying makeup. After I applied some dark pink eyeshadow throughout my eyelids using a soft synthetic brush, I quickly applied a muted pink lipstick and rushed out of my room. Unfortunately, the time I spent applying my makeup was wasted because as soon as I

Those attitudes caused some negative consequences, such as ignoring people's suggestions, or being harsh to realize how foolish I was. I was an exchange student at Japan when I was sixteen years old. At the beginning of exchanging experience, I felt curious and excited to be in a totally new environment.

People around me spoke different languages, and majority of them had different culture and background from mine. Initially I did feel pleased to talk about my culture with new friends, but those feeling didn't last long. After few days, I suddenly felt exhausted and embarrassed at Japan. I didn't understand the class, and I couldn't even ask questions. The main difficulty was expressing my ideas in understandable ways. Later, I found the textbook in Chinese version to catch up class materials.

Unfortunately, the teacher announced that the quiz would come shortly. At that moment, I was not only lost but also scared. I tried my best not to be behind, but ability of learning independently disappointed me a lot. There were misunderstanding of basic principles and concepts existed when I was studying. However, no one could help me to understand better. At the quiz day, the whole class seemed confident except me. During the quiz time, I cheated at my neighbor’s paper when she went to washroom and exam proctors caught me.

After the quiz, my counselor was shock when she knew what happened. I received the punishment from school with one-week volunteer time. At the same time, my best friend advised me to apologize to my counselor because she trusted so much. After several days, my counselor finally talked and taught me the importance of being honest in life. After long time, I still remember this experience. This made me recognize that people were not perfect, but you could make little progress every day to get closer to being perfect.

Last month, our school arranged a trip to the Taj Mahal, Agra. The beauty of the Taj Mahal seemed to have no parallel.  It is made of white marble on the bank of the river Yamuna. The garden in front of it has tall cypress trees, colourful flowers, and rows of mountains. Many precious gems and stones are seen set on the tomb.

I found in the Taj Mahal the artistic and cultural heritage of India. Every stone of this building tells the story of the true love of Shah Jahan and Mumtaz. The white marble structure unrolled before me a new world of beauty. It is, indeed, matchless in beauty and grandeur. That’s why it is considered one of the seven wonders of the world. I was greatly charmed by its beauty. I felt breathless for a white. It was undoubtedly the most memorable day of my life.

A memorable incident is an incident which leaves an everlasting impression on our minds. The most memorable incident of my life is when I got an opportunity to exhibit my talent on stage in front of a huge audience. I always dreamt of becoming a singer. As a kid, I used my toothbrush as the mike and treated my dolls as my audience.

I was enrolled in a vocal training course in an eminent singer’s singing class and from there, based on my performance I was selected to display my skills at the Zee Sa Re Ga Ma Pa. Initially, I was a bit nervous, but got over it soon when I heard the tune. My performance was well received and the audience acclaimed me with their applauds and kept yelling “once more”. A moment which is sweet lasts long in our memory. I distinctly remember the day. My H. S. examination was over and I was having a relaxed time. One day, after spending the afternoon with my friends, I returned home.

My parents were waiting for me. Sister also came running. She was carrying a big envelope in her hand. They all seemed to be very excited and their faces bore reflections of animated joy. My sister shouted that there was a good news for me in the envelope and she would not tell unless she got a heavy bakshis.

After much cajoling, I could get the letter. Lo and behold! It was the admission letter from the I.I.T, Kharagpur. My joy then knew no bounds, I did quite well in the joint entrance examination. But to get selected finally in the highly competitive all-India test was something none could be sure of. In fact, I was a little tense to know the result.

Parents blessed me for my success. Neighbours also came. They all congratulated me again and again. I was lost in golden dreams. At last, I was going to join an institution of international fame! It was the happiest and most memorable day in my life because my future career got a definite direction that day. But that happy day taught me a lesson, too. I made up my mind to work hard in order to be successful in my career.

and explain why this event is memorable to you.

I have experienced many unforgettable moments in my life that have become milestones to cherish all my life. By far, the most significant one was when I received my drivers’ license. That was a momentous day because I wanted to drive on my own and go on a solo trip to at least one city from each state in India. The benefits that I received from it still exist today. Just knowing that I finally had a driver's license made me feel as free as a bird. I have an undying love for cars and driving and in order to tick off all the things on my bucket list, I needed a driving license. My father stepped up and offered to teach me how to drive. I was completely engrossed and learned everything quickly and signed up for the driving test. I showed up early the day of the test and passed it with flying colours. Just a few days later, I received my license through mail and I was in a state of amazement . I immediately knew it would only take a few days to set out on my adventure. On the same day, I took my father’s car out for a quick drive around my hometown, and I did not go back home until late at night. It was a tremendous feeling to drive all alone and sitting in the driver’s seat just made the experience so much better. I am glad I got my license when I did as it helped me drive to many places I wanted to visit. A few days later, I did start my journey and visited a few places near my hometown and I have not stopped since.

Part 3 Follow Up - Questions & Answers

1. what events usually become memorable in our life.

A memorable moment in someone’s life can be thought of as joyful, nerve-racking, or scary. Everyone has their own personal memories that may never go away. Any event which creates a lasting impression on our mind becomes memorable. It could be our own or our loved one’s wedding or any occasion which leaves a lasting effect on one’s mind.

2. What is the importance of family celebration in our life?

Family traditions create opportunities for making positive memories. When members gather to commemorate milestones and celebrate successes, they create moments in time to carry with them always. The intention of celebrating together serves as an underpinning for nostalgia and fond recollection.

3. What changes have you observed in the last 10 years in terms of family celebration?

A lot has changed in terms of family celebrations. A decade ago, celebrations were more intimate and traditional whereas now especially with the pandemic having set in, there have been radical changes. The past year even witnessed all celebrations being held virtually. We saw weddings, birthdays and festivals being celebrated online.

4. How can a good memory help people to do their work?

We live in a distracted world. From moment to moment, people have various technologies begging for their attention. That can lead to laziness and sloppy thinking. Recalling past events can help keep a mind focused and more disciplined. Research has shown that the more people exercise their memories, the greater the capacity they have for learning new things. That’s an important trait for people to possess at their workplace.

5. Do you think that it’s important to remember all the things? Why?

Psychologists say that holding onto our good memories and leaving the bad ones behind helps us to deal with unpleasant situations and retain a positive outlook on life. So, I strongly feel that we should try and conveniently forget the bad memories and move ahead in life.

6. Why do we want to celebrate special occasions with friends and family?

Yes, true, our families are where we experience our biggest triumphs and our deepest emotions and they are where we have the greatest potential to do good. Celebrating with family and friends allows us to be intentional with our time together. The special memories that are being planted when you spend time together with friends and family participating and celebrating a special event together is another reason I think people prefer to be with family and friends during their celebrations.

The most unforgettable moment in my life is when one day I was travelling from Jammu to Dehli by train. I was in the first class, so only a few passengers were there with me. At a specific station, all of them got off. I was now in the compartment absolutely alone.

After a moment, a clever lady walked into the compartment and sat next to me. She had an ingenious scheme to rob me. She told me she would report to the railway police that I had robbed her if I did not hand over all the money I had to her. I was totally and utterly perplexed when I heard this horrible voice. I made a plan to save myself from that lady’s wicked plan. Therefore, I pretended to be a deaf and a dumb fellow and asked her to write what she wanted to say on a piece of paper. She wrote her request happily on the piece of paper and handed it over to me. I changed my seat to pick up a piece of writing. The railway policeman came and asked what the matter was. As smart as she was, the women burst into admissions, so she said I had robbed her of a thousand rupees. He seemed to believe in her false story at first, but when I gave the piece of writing to the police, she turned pale. She was caught red-handed, so I saved myself from her evil scheme.

Describe A Memorable Event In Your Life: Follow-Up Questions

Follow-up question 1.

Question 1. Why do you think memorable events are important in our lives?

Answer 1: I believe memorable events play a crucial role in shaping our identities and values. These experiences often teach us valuable life lessons and help us grow. For instance, my solo trip to Manali taught me independence and resilience. Such events also create cherished memories we can reflect on and draw strength from during challenging times.

Answer 2: Memorable events are important because they mark significant moments of personal growth and achievement. They help us to reflect on our journey and understand how far we have come. For example, my trek in Solang Valley was not only an adventure but also a test of my determination and endurance, which gave me a sense of accomplishment.

Follow-Up Question 2

Question 2. How do you think people can make more memorable moments in their lives?

Answer 1: People can create more memorable moments by stepping out of their comfort zones and trying new activities. Travelling to new places, meeting different people, and engaging in unique experiences can lead to unforgettable memories. For example, planning a solo trip or participating in an adventure sport can be incredibly enriching and memorable.

Answer 2: Focusing on being present in the moment and appreciating small joys can make life more memorable. People often overlook simple pleasures in their daily lives. By paying attention to these moments, such as spending quality time with loved ones or pursuing a hobby, one can create lasting memories.

Follow-Up Question 3

Question 3. How do memories influence our future decisions?

Answer 1: Memories significantly influence our future decisions by serving as references for what has worked well or not in the past. My experience in Manali, for instance, has encouraged me to travel more and seek out new adventures, knowing how much personal growth and satisfaction it brought me.

Answer 2: Our memories shape our preferences and choices by reminding us of past joys or mistakes. Positive memories from an event can motivate us to pursue similar experiences, while negative memories can help us avoid repeating the same errors. For example, my positive experience with paragliding makes me eager to try other adventure sports.

Follow-Up Question 4

Question 4. Do you think people today have fewer memorable moments compared to the past? Why or why not?

Answer 1: I don't think people today have fewer memorable moments; rather, the nature of memorable moments has changed. With technology and social media, experiences are shared and remembered differently. While people might not have the same type of memories as in the past, they still create significant moments through new ways of connecting and experiencing the world.

Answer 2: People today might have fewer memorable moments due to their fast-paced lifestyle and constant distractions from technology. Many individuals are so focused on their digital lives that they miss out on real-life experiences. However, those who consciously try to disconnect and engage in meaningful activities can still create plenty of memorable moments.

Watch these adorable twin babies meet each other for the first time

When a pair of twin babies finally noticed each other, it was love at first sight. “My twin boys discovering each other for the first time,” Meagan Garr, a wedding videographer in Ocala, Florida, wrote on a TikTok video of her 4-month-old sons Cooper and Olsen.

The video with 13 million views shows the fraternal twin brothers lying next each other having a non-verbal conversation. They’re smiling and staring into each other’s eyes, babbling, touching arms and very delighted with their mirror image.

Meagan tells TODAY.com that she recorded the interaction after trying to get her babies to acknowledge each other’s presence.

“I have a friend whose twins are 6 months old and she told me, ‘They just noticed each other.' I was like, ‘That’s a milestone — what?’” says Meagan.

The twins already react to their older brothers Jackson, 6, and Lucas, 3, says Meagan, but hadn’t acknowledged each other just yet. “It’s sort of like, ‘You’re my arm, you’re always there,’” she says.

This week, Meagan took photos of the twins, trying to catch them smile at the same time. While sorting through the pictures, she glanced up to see her boys smiling at each other.

“It was a candid moment, which made my heart so happy,” she says.

It's a party of five for the Garr family, thanks to twins Cooper and Olsen.

Meagan has wanted twins for a long time.

“When I was five, I told my mom, ‘I’m going to have twin boys when I grow up,’” she says. “Then I had my first baby and said, ‘Just kidding, one is really hard.’”

When Meagan and her husband Andrew found out they were expecting, she told her sons right away.

Although twins don’t run in either family, her oldest son Jackson knew.

“He said, ‘I want two babies,” says Meagan. During the first trimester, Jackson was convinced he was going to have twin brothers. According to Meagan, “He wasn’t even fazed” by the ultrasound results.

Cooper and Olsen were born premature at approximately 33 weeks and stayed in the NICU for their first month. Cooper weighed 3 pounds, 14 ounces (and was nicknamed ‘Mini Cooper”) and Olsen weighed five pounds, one ounce.

Meagan says she’d love for her twins to interact more.

“We’ve had a few moments,” she says, “if they’re both in a good mood and next to each other.”

Rivers of Lava on Venus Reveal a More Volcanically Active Planet

New software let scientists re-examine old radar images, providing some of the strongest evidence yet that volcanoes continue to reshape the hellish planet.

essay about memorable event in my life

By Robin George Andrews

Witnessing the blood-red fires of a volcanic eruption on Earth is memorable. But to see molten rock bleed out of a volcano on a different planet would be extraordinary. That is close to what scientists have spotted on Venus: two vast, sinuous lava flows oozing from two different corners of Earth’s planetary neighbor.

“After you see something like this, the first reaction is ‘wow,’” said Davide Sulcanese , a doctoral student at the Università d’Annunzio in Pescara, Italy, and an author of a study reporting the discovery in the journal Nature Astronomy , published on Monday.

Earth and Venus were forged at the same time. Both are made of the same primeval matter, and both are the same age and size. So why is Earth a paradise overflowing with water and life, while Venus is a scorched hellscape with acidic skies?

Volcanic eruptions tinker with planetary atmospheres. One theory holds that, eons ago, several apocalyptic eruptions set off a runaway greenhouse effect on Venus, turning it from a temperate, waterlogged world into an arid desert of burned glass.

To better understand its volcanism, scientists hoped to catch a Venusian eruption in the act. But although the planet is known to be smothered in volcanoes, an opaque atmosphere has prevented anyone from seeing an eruption the way spacecraft have spotted them on Io, the hypervolcanic moon of Jupiter .

In the 1990s, NASA’s spacecraft Magellan used cloud-penetrating radar to survey most of the planet. But back then, the relatively low-resolution images made spotting fresh molten rock a troublesome task.

By using modern software to peruse Magellan’s data, scientists have now found two unambiguous lava flows: one tripping down the flank of Sif Mons, a broad shield volcano, and another winding its way across a western part of Niobe Planitia, a flat plain pockmarked with numerous volcanic mountains.

Many planetary scientists reckoned Venus was effervescing with eruptions. “But it’s one thing to strongly suspect it and quite another to know it,” said Paul Byrne , a planetary scientist at Washington University in St. Louis who was not part of the new study.

Venus lacks the plate tectonics of Earth. But its similarly rocky constitution and comparable size suggests that something must still be cooking inside the sun’s second planet — and it should be volcanically active.

There is indirect supporting evidence: Volcanic gases linger in Venus’s skies, and the way that parts of the planet glow suggests they were painted over by lava in the recent geologic past .

Direct evidence of volcanic fury finally, and surprisingly, emerged in 2023, when researchers caught sight of a volcanic vent doubling in size and possibly filling with lava in old Magellan data. Other scientists still yearned for signs of an unequivocal lava flow, an almost literal smoking gun.

Mr. Sulcanese granted their wish. He found bright, riverlike patches on Sif Mons and Niobe Planitia in later Magellan survey images that weren’t present in earlier data. After carefully ruling out other possibilities, including landslides, his team concluded that lava was the only reasonable explanation.

“Magellan is the gift that keeps on giving,” said Stephen Kane , a planetary astrophysicist at the University of California, Riverside, who was not involved with the new study.

Both lava flows are comparable in size to the output of the Kilauea volcano in Hawaii during its three-month paroxysm in 2018. And using these two eruptions, the study’s authors estimate that there is considerably more eruptive activity than previously assumed — and that it’s happening elsewhere on the planet in the present day.

“Venus is active,” said Giuseppe Mitri , an astronomer also at the Università d’Annunzio and an author of the study.

More important, volcanically speaking, Venus “is Earth-like,” said Anna Gülcher , a planetary scientist at the California Institute of Technology who was not involved with the work.

The result also complicates the tentative detection of phosphine in Venus’s atmosphere; phosphine is a substance that is usually associated on Earth with living things. But other explanations for its possible presence on Venus couldn’t be ruled out . Volcanic activity can also make phosphine, but rebuttals to that idea have suggested that Venus simply doesn’t have sufficient volcanism to make it.

“Well, apparently there is,” Dr. Kane said.

The only way to find better answers — on phosphine, Venus’s volcanic cadence, its cataclysmic transformation — is to revisit the planet. Fortunately, a fleet of new spacecraft is set to do just that in the 2030s .

While we wait, Magellan’s memories will continue to offer unexpected gifts.

“We can start to think of Venus as a living, breathing world,” Dr. Byrne said.
