I also have a pet dog that I love to bits. We got him when he was a little baby and have watched him grow into a beautiful dog. All my family members love him with all their heart. We love his silly antics and cannot imagine our lives without him. We named him Sasha.

My father adopted Sasha when he was a little baby. His friend had given birth to puppies and they decided to put the puppies up for adoption. We convinced our father to get one for us. Considering they knew our family well, they immediately agreed. Little did we know that our lives would change forever after his entrance.

Sasha came in like a blessing for our family. He belongs to the breed of Labrador. Sasha was black in colour, pure coal black. He came in as a puppy with his cute little paws and eyes. We couldn’t stop gushing over this beauty. My siblings used to fight with each other as to who will get the maximum time to play with Sasha.

A Changed Life

Before having a pet dog, we didn’t know what all we would experience. After Sasha came into our lives, he changed it forever. Sasha changed the meaning of loyalty for us. We learned how this faithful animal always worked for our happiness and safety.

Dogs train in crisis response at Marquette Township Fire Department

MARQUETTE TOWNSHIP, Mich. (WLUC) - Dogs taking part in assisted crisis response training were introduced to the sights and sounds of a fire department on Friday.

Dogs in the HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response class heard and smelled what an operational firefighter and fire truck is like.

HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response Midwest Regional Manager Keena Jones said these dogs will be certified in crisis response, which is a step above a normal therapy dog.

“I like to think of them as if you are in a hospital. The therapy dogs are like nurses on the wings. The crisis response dogs are like the ER or trauma units. They wear a lot of different hats and do a lot of different things,” Jones said.

A half dozen handlers from across the Midwest met at the Marquette Township Fire Department on Friday.

Handler Deborah Forester and her dog Oakland are based in lower Michigan. They volunteered for the crisis response team after the Oxford school shooting.

“I realized I didn’t have any education and wasn’t equipped to be in that situation, and now I sought out more education,” Forester said.

Forester said Oakland has helped many people through traumatic experiences, especially first responders.

“We’ve been called out for a first responder suicide; we’ve been called out for a high school student suicide,” Forester said. “This past fall we were called out for a high school teacher who was killed in an accident. There is a huge demand.”

HOPE Animal-Assisted Crisis Response is a nationwide non-profit with more than 300 teams. Jones said there are currently no certified crisis response dogs in the U.P., but that will change after this weekend.

“We will have two HOPE dogs,” Jones said. “We also have one in Ontario, Canada.”

The training continues this weekend, as the dogs will go through airport security, like they are boarding a plane on Saturday, and Sunday will be more classroom learning.

Rattlesnake avoidance training for dogs

GRAND JUNCTION, Colo. (KJCT) - The Canyon Country Animal Hospital in Grand Junction is hosting its 8th annual Rattlesnake Avoidance Training Class from May 16th to May 18th. This class is offered once a year and utilizes the help of Richard Andrew or Andy, a professional trainer from Southern California, to show dogs rattlesnakes in a controlled environment. Often, it is an unforgettable experience for the dog.

The rattlesnakes are caged and left in concealed areas. Andy takes the dog and its owner around a path where the caged rattlesnakes lie in wait. When the trio approaches the snake, the unmistakable rattling begins, and the dog takes notice. The next rattlesnake the dog comes across usually brings the dog to an alert state, as they now have a trace of the smell. Andy tells us that they use the dog’s sense of hearing and smell to identify the dangerous rattlesnakes.

We spoke to Kyle Dunn, DVM and Owner of Canyon Country Animal Hospital, who tells us that it can cost dog owners thousands if their dog is bitten by a rattlesnake. His experience as a veterinarian means he has seen his fair share of snake bites “I got to see the devastation of snake bites. So rattlesnakes, when they bite a dog, it can cause a lot of problems.”

Richmond is hopeful Maurice Rioli Jr has avoided serious injury after he twisted an ankle and was one of two players taken off the field on a medicab during a humiliating 91-point defeat to the Western Bulldogs.

Tigers teammate Sam Banks was also driven off the MCG after he was concussed during Saturday night's one-sided contest and Jack Graham re-injured his troublesome hamstring.

Rioli was caught in possession by Adam Treloar during the dying stages of the match and hurt his left ankle in a gruesome incident.

The Tigers forward was left writhing in pain on the turf as medical staff rushed to his aid.

"We're hoping it's just a rolled ankle but whenever there's a rolled ankle it could be syndesmosis," Tigers coach Adem Yze said after his side's 19.19 (133) to 6.6 (42) defeat.

"But we'll just wait for the scan on that.

"He was trying so hard in that last quarter too.

"We gave him a bit of midfield exposure, which was nice, but then to see him get injured … we've got a few sore boys there."

Inexperienced midfielder Banks was knocked out after hitting his head on the turf in a scary landing from a third-quarter marking contest.

Bulldogs ruckman Tim English accidentally took the 21-year-old's legs from underneath him after being pushed into the contest by Noah Balta.

Play was held up for several minutes while medical staff assessed Banks, who was awake and alert in the change room soon afterwards.

Graham, who returned from a one-week lay-off with a hamstring injury, had been substituted out of the match a few minutes earlier after re-injuring the same muscle.

"Banksy's up and about now. He was concussed so he'll go into the protocols," Yze said.

"Jack Graham just felt tight in a hammy, the same hammy, so we didn't want to take any risks with that.

"But we'll have to bite the bullet and he'll be out for a week or two."

Richmond has been smashed by injuries in Yze's first season at the helm, with Jacob Hopper, Tim Taranto, Tom Lynch and Josh Gibcus all among the stars sidelined.

Bulldogs find winning formula

Under a blowtorch after four losses in their previous five matches, the pressure had been mounting on Bulldogs coach Beveridge.

But his side held their opponents goalless in the first quarter and were never challenged in a result that improved their win-loss record to 4-5 ahead of a tough away clash with Greater Western Sydney next week.

"One of the difficulties when maybe there is some external pressure is to go into a game and relax your mind and make fluid and concerted decisions in the game, especially with the ball," Beveridge said.

"I thought our ball security and the way we used our hands and brought each other into the game was as good as we've done for a fair while.

"It's been a hallmark of the times when we've been a really good team and challenged or not. I just thought that everyone really kept their heads.

"There was a lot of heart in tonight … and the spirit in the players was strong.

"Now the maintenance of that and the progression of it going into a really challenging game against GWS will be really important."

Aaron Naughton, Sam Darcy and James Harmes (four goals each) cashed in on the Bulldogs' territorial dominance of Richmond as they won a lop-sided inside-50 count (77-41).
