What is a thesis?

What is a dissertation, getting started, staying on track.

A thesis is a long-term project that you work on over the course of a semester or a year. Theses have a very wide variety of styles and content, so we encourage you to look at prior examples and work closely with faculty to develop yours. 

Before you begin, make sure that you are familiar with the dissertation genre—what it is for and what it looks like.

Generally speaking, a dissertation’s purpose is to prove that you have the expertise necessary to fulfill your doctoral-degree requirements by showing depth of knowledge and independent thinking.

The form of a dissertation may vary by discipline. Be sure to follow the specific guidelines of your department.

  • PhD This site directs candidates to the GSAS website about dissertations , with links to checklists,  planning, formatting, acknowledgments, submission, and publishing options. There is also a link to guidelines for the prospectus . Consult with your committee chair about specific requirements and standards for your dissertation.
  • DDES This document covers planning, patent filing, submission guidelines, publishing options, formatting guidelines, sample pages, citation guidelines, and a list of common errors to avoid. There is also a link to guidelines for the prospectus .
  • Scholarly Pursuits (GSAS) This searchable booklet from Harvard GSAS is a comprehensive guide to writing dissertations, dissertation-fellowship applications, academic journal articles, and academic job documents.

Finding an original topic can be a daunting and overwhelming task. These key concepts can help you focus and save time.

Finding a topic for your thesis or dissertation should start with a research question that excites or at least interests you. A rigorous, engaging, and original project will require continuous curiosity about your topic, about your own thoughts on the topic, and about what other scholars have said on your topic. Avoid getting boxed in by thinking you know what you want to say from the beginning; let your research and your writing evolve as you explore and fine-tune your focus through constant questioning and exploration.

Get a sense of the broader picture before you narrow your focus and attempt to frame an argument. Read, skim, and otherwise familiarize yourself with what other scholars have done in areas related to your proposed topic. Briefly explore topics tangentially related to yours to broaden your perspective and increase your chance of finding a unique angle to pursue.

Critical Reading

Critical reading is the opposite of passive reading. Instead of merely reading for information to absorb, critical reading also involves careful, sustained thinking about what you are reading. This process may include analyzing the author’s motives and assumptions, asking what might be left out of the discussion, considering what you agree with or disagree with in the author’s statements and why you agree or disagree, and exploring connections or contradictions between scholarly arguments. Conversation

Your thesis or dissertation will incorporate some ideas from other scholars whose work you researched. By reading critically and following your curiosity, you will develop your own ideas and claims, and these contributions are the core of your project. You will also acknowledge the work of scholars who came before you, and you must accurately and fairly attribute this work and define your place within the larger discussion. Make sure that you know how to quote, summarize, paraphrase ,  integrate , and cite secondary sources to avoid plagiarism and to show the depth and breadth of your knowledge.

A thesis is a long-term, large project that involves both research and writing; it is easy to lose focus, motivation, and momentum. Here are suggestions for achieving the result you want in the time you have.

The dissertation is probably the largest project you have undertaken, and a lot of the work is self-directed. The project can feel daunting or even overwhelming unless you break it down into manageable pieces and create a timeline for completing each smaller task. Be realistic but also challenge yourself, and be forgiving of yourself if you miss a self-imposed deadline here and there.

Your program will also have specific deadlines for different requirements, including establishing a committee, submitting a prospectus, completing the dissertation, defending the dissertation, and submitting your work. Consult your department’s website for these dates and incorporate them into the timeline for your work.

Accountability

Sometimes self-imposed deadlines do not feel urgent unless there is accountability to someone beyond yourself. To increase your motivation to complete tasks on schedule, set dates with your committee chair to submit pre-determined pieces of a chapter. You can also arrange with a fellow doctoral student to check on each other’s progress. Research and writing can be lonely, so it is also nice to share that journey with someone and support each other through the process.

Common Pitfalls

The most common challenges for students writing a dissertation are writer’s block, information-overload, and the compulsion to keep researching forever.

There are many strategies for avoiding writer’s block, such as freewriting, outlining, taking a walk, starting in the middle, and creating an ideal work environment for your particular learning style. Pay attention to what helps you and try different things until you find what works.

Efficient researching techniques are essential to avoiding information-overload. Here are a couple of resources about strategies for finding sources and quickly obtaining essential information from them.

Finally, remember that there is always more to learn and your dissertation cannot incorporate everything. Follow your curiosity but also set limits on the scope of your work. It helps to create a folder entitled “future projects” for topics and sources that interest you but that do not fit neatly into the dissertation. Also remember that future scholars will build off of your work, so leave something for them to do.

Browsing through theses and dissertations of the past can help to get a sense of your options and gain inspiration but be careful to use current guidelines and refer to your committee instead of relying on these examples for form or formatting.

Untuk menjaga dan mempertahankan kondisi jembatan agar tetap dalam kondisi fungsional, maka diperlukan pemeliharaan jembatan. Permasalahan dinegara berkembang seperti Indonesia adalah terbatasnya dana yang tersedia, oleh karena itu diperlukan suatu prioritas dalam penyusunan program pemeliharaan jembatan. Penelitian ini bertujuan untuk merumuskan struktur hirarki dan menentukan ukuran kuantitatif dari masing-masing kriteria dan subkriteria pada struktur hirarki untuk menyusun skala prioritas dengan mengambil studi kasus di Satker PJN Metropolitan Denpasar dengan metode Analytical Hierarchy Process. Kriteria yang berpengaruh yaitu i). kriteria sistem jaringan (subkriterianya yaitu: kondisi jembatan (A1), fungsi jembatan (A2) dan material penyusun bangunan atas jembatan (A3)), ii). kriteria sistem kelembagaan (subkriterianya antara lain biaya pemeliharaan (B1), tertuang dalam renstra (B2) dan sejarah pemeliharaan jembatan (B3)), iii).kriteria sistem tata guna lahan (subkriterianya antara lain: menuju kawasan strategis transportasi (C1), menuju kawasan strategis pariwisata (C2) dan menuju kawasan strategis tempat suci/warisan budaya dan alam (C3)) serta iv).kriteria sistem pergerakan dengan sub kriteria LHR (D1) dan penyempitan jalan (D2) Dari analisis diperoleh hasil:19 jembatan menempati skala prioritas sangat tinggi, 16 jembatan dengan skala prioritas tinggi, 19 jembatan dengan skala prioritas sedang, 15 jembatan dengan skala prioritas rendah dan 17 jembatan dengan skala prioritas sangat rendah. Hasil diperoleh dengan formula penentuan prioritas pemeliharaan jembatan yaitu: Y = 23,74A1 + 7,05A2 + 5,01A3 + 4,13B1 + 3,87B2 + 6,39B3 + 12,4C1 + 5,22C2 + 5,38C3 + 10,61D1 + 16,19D2. This study was conducted to determine the effect of service quality on customer satisfaction by word of mouth (WOM) as an intervening variable in PT Antarmitra Sembada, Jakarta. Data were collected from 100 respondents PT Antarmitra Sembada customers using accidental sampling method, then processed using SPSS version 23 with Path Analysis technique uses micro PROCESS. The results showed that the value prob. Service Quality of 0.0000 or less than alpha of 0.05, which means there is influence between the Quality of Service of the KP (Customer Satisfaction). Value prob. WOM is equal to 0.0168 or smaller than alpha of 0.05, which means there is the influence of WOM against KP. Indirectly WOM variables may mediate the effect of Quality of Service to KP because the value BootLLCI and BootULCI equally be positive. The implication of this research is PT Antarmitra Sembada must continue to maintain and improve service quality to increase customer satisfaction. Thus, marketing through word of mouth can be improved if the customer satisfaction also increased, so the media can be an effective communication and marketing for the company's progress and face the increasingly fierce business competition. Abstrak : Penelitian ini dilakukan untuk mengetahui pengaruh kualitas pelayanan terhadap kepuasan pelanggan dengan word of mouth (WOM) sebagai variabel intervening pada PT Antarmitra Sembada, Jakarta. Data yang dikumpulkan dari 100 responden pelanggan PT Antarmitra Sembada menggunakan metode accidental sampling, kemudian diolah dengan menggunakan bantuan software SPSS versi 23 dengan teknik Analisis Path menggunakan micro PROCESS. Hasil penelitian menunjukkan bahwa nilai prob. Kualitas Pelayanan sebesar 0.0000 atau lebih kecil dari alpha 0,05 yang artinya terdapat pengaruh antara Kualitas Pelayanan terhadap KP (Kepuasan Pelanggan). Nilai prob. WOM adalah sebesar 0.0168 atau lebih kecil dari alpha 0,05 yang artinya terdapat pengaruh antara WOM terhadap KP. Secara tidak langsung variabel WOM dapat memediasi pengaruh Kualitas Pelayanan terhadap KP karena nilai BootLLCI dan BootULCI sama-sama bernilai positif. Implikasi dari penelitian ini adalah perusahaan PT Antarmitra Sembada harus terus mempertahankan dan meningkatkan Kualitas Pelayanan untuk meningkatkan kepuasan pelanggan. Dengan demikian pemasaran melalui word of mouth dapat ditingkatkan apabila kepuasan pelanggan juga meningkat, sehingga dapat menjadi media komunikasi dan pemasaran yang efektif untuk kemajuan perusahaan dan menghadapi persaingan bisnis yang semakin ketat. Hipotesis Penelitian merupakan salah satu unsur penting dalam kehidupan. Dengan dilakukan penelitian maka dihasilkan berbagai macam ilmu pengetahuan yang dapat dimanfaatkan oleh manusia. Untuk melakukan penelitian maka harus dilewati berbagai tahapan. Hal ini sesuai dengan pengertian penelitian ilmiah itu sendiri yakni menjawab masalah berdasarkan metode yang sistematis. Salah satu hal penting yang dilakukan terutama dalam penelitian kuantitatif adalah merumuskan hipotesis. Dengan dilakukannya penelitian, maka peneliti akan menemukan sebuah kebenaran yang mana kebenaran tersebut akan dijadikan pedoman dalam penelitian. Penelitian yang merumuskan hipotesis adalah penelitian yang menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif. Sebab dalam penelitian kuantitatif dimaksudkan untuk menguji hipotesis. Berbeda dengan penelitian kualitatif. Pada penelitian kualitatif tidak dirumuskan hipotesis, akan tetapi justru diharapkan dapat ditemukan hipotesis atau teori. Penelitian yang menggunakan pendekatan kuntitatif yaitu penelitian yang dilakukan secara langsung pada suatu objek yang akan diteliti. Pendekatan kuantitatif merupakan penelitian yang dapat memberikan jawaban atas penelitian (menguji). Penelitian yang menggunakan pendekatan kuantitatif sanga dominan dalam penugasan suatu tugas karya ilmiah suatu mahasiswa. Pendekatan kuantitatif dapat memberikan keabsahan dalam sebuah penelitian. Pendekatan kuantitatif dalam penelitian tidak membutuhkan sebuah teori/pemikiran. Begitu sebaliknya, penelitian yang menggunakan pendekatan kualitatif tidak begitu digunakan oleh seorang peneliti. Pendekatan kualitatif dalam sebuah penelitian tingkat kebenarannya perlu dipertimbangkan. Pendekatan kualitatif pada penelitian hanya mengedepankan sebuah teori untuk pengujiannya. Pendekatan yang bersifat kualitatif tidak cocok/tidak dapat digunakan dalam sebuah penelitian, yang mana dalam sebuah penelitian akan ditemukannya sebuah kebenaran yang dapat dijadikan pedoman dalam pengujiannya. Penulis dalam penelitian kali ini, meneliti tentang hipotesis yang berkaitan dengan pendidikan karakter siswa dalam ranah pendidikan. Hipotesis berasal dari dua penggalan kata, yaitu " hypo " yang artinya " di bawah " dan " thesa " yang artinya " kebenaran ". Dengan demikian hipotesis secara sederhana dapat dipahami sebagai suatu pernyataan yang pada waktu diungkapkan belum diketahui kebenarannya. Dalam sebuah penelitian, hipotesis umumnya dirumuskan untuk menjawab secara sementara masalah yang akan diteliti. Jadi, hipotesis adalah jawaban sementara terhadap rumusan masalah penelitian yang akan diteliti. 1 Jawaban sementara terhadap sautu penelitian belum bisa diambil kebenarannya untuk dijadikan acuan/pedoman dalam penulisan artikel/journal. Hipotesis hanya berupa penelitian yang belum terlihat keabsahannya. Agar terjadi penelitian yang mempunyai suatu kebenaran. Pendidikan karakter adalah suatu sistem penanaman nilai-nilai karakter kepada warga yang meliputi komponen pengetahuan, kesadaran atau kemauan, dan tindakan untuk melaksanakan nilai-nilai tersebut, baik terhadap Allah, diri sendiri, sesama, lingkungan, maupun kebangsaan sehingga menjadi manusia insan kamil. Karakter adalah respon langsung yang dilakukan seseorang terhadap setiap stimulus yang datang dalam keadaan sadar. Advanced Control Strategies For Heavy Duty Diesel Powertrains

The automotive industry has incorporated controls since the 1970s, starting with the pioneering application of an air-to-fuel ratio feedback control carburetor. Over time, significant advancements have been made in control strategies to meet industry standards for reduced fuel consumption, exhaust emissions, and enhanced safety. This thesis focuses on the implementation of advanced control strategies in heavy-duty diesel powertrains and their advantages over traditional control methods commonly employed in the automotive industry.

The initial part of the thesis demonstrates the utilization of model predictive control (MPC) to generate an optimized velocity profile for class 8 trucks. These velocity profiles are designed to minimize fuel consumption along a given route with known grade conditions, while adhering to the time constraints comparable to those of standard commercial cruise controllers. This methodology is further expanded to include the platooning of two trucks, with the rear truck following a desired gap (variable or fixed), resulting in additional fuel savings throughout the designated route. Through collaborative efforts involving Cummins, Peloton Technology, and Purdue University, these control strategies were implemented and validated through simulation, hardware-in-the-loop testing, and ultimately, in demonstration vehicles.

MPC is highly effective for vehicle-level controls due to the accurate plant model used for optimization. However, when it comes to engine controls, the plant model becomes highly nonlinear and loses accuracy when linearized [20]. To address this issue, robust control techniques are introduced to account for the inherent inaccuracies in the plant model, which can be represented as uncertainties.

The second study showcases the application of robust controllers in diesel engine operations, focusing on a 4.5L John Deere diesel engine equipped with an electrified intake boosting system. The intake boosting system is selectively activated during transient operations to mitigate drops in the air-to-fuel ratio (AFR), which can result in smoke emissions. Initially, a two-degree-of-freedom robustsingle-input single-output (SISO) eBooster controller is synthesized to control the eBooster during load transients. Although the robust SISO controller yields improvements, the eBooster alone does not encompass all factors affecting the gas exchange process. Other actuators, such as the exhaust throttle and EGR valve, need to be considered to enhance the air handling system. To achieve this, a robust model-basedmultiple-input multiple-output (MIMO) controller is developed to regulate the desired AFR, engine speed, and diluent air ratio (DAR) using various air handling actuators and fueling strategies. The robust MIMO controller is synthesized based on a physics-based mean value engine model, which has been calibrated to accurately reflect high-fidelity engine simulation software. The robust SISO and MIMO controllers are implemented in simulation using the high-fidelity engine simulation software. Following the simulation, the controllers are validated through experimental testing conducted in an engine dynamometer at University of Wisconsin. Results from these controllers are compared against a non-eBoosted engine, which serves as the baseline. While both the SISO and MIMO controllers show improvements in AFR (Air-Fuel Ratio), DAR (Diluent Air Ratio), and engine speed recovery during the load transients, the robust MIMO controller outperforms them by demonstrating the best overall engine performance. This superiority is attributed to its comprehensive understanding of the coupling between each actuator input and the model output. When the MIMO controller operates alongside the electrified intake boosting system, the engine exhibits remarkable enhancements. Not only does it recover back to a steady state 70% faster than the baseline, but it also reduces engine speed droop by 45%. Consequently, the engine's ability to accept load torque increases significantly.

As a result, a single robust MIMO controller can efficiently perform the same task instead of employing multiple PIDs or look-up tables for each actuator.

105-year-old dons cap and gown, receives overdue degree from Stanford University

STANFORD -- At age 105, Virginia Hislop has lived a full life with two children, four grandchildren and nine great-grandchildren. She has devoted much of her life to education and has served on school and college boards in central Washington, where she lives.

Despite her success, she says something was missing.

"From time to time, I wished I had finished and gotten my master's (degree)," Hislop said. "Part of it was the fact that I've been a college director for a good number of years and I didn't have the advanced degree that some of the other ones did."

Hislop had taken the required classes at Stanford University but had not yet submitted a master's thesis when the U.S. entered World War II in 1941.

"The Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor," Hislop explained.

She quickly married her college sweetheart before his Army deployment. She assisted in the war effort then focused on her family but never finished her thesis.

"Fast-forward 83 years -- we don't have a thesis requirement anymore so she's actually satisfied the requirements for Master of Arts in the Graduate School of Education," said Daniel Schwartz, dean of the Stanford Graduate School of Education. "So, 83 years later, we're honoring this woman who has done so much."

Sunday afternoon at the education department's commencement ceremony, fellow graduates and Hislop's family, many of whom live in the Bay Area, gave her a standing ovation as she walked onto the stage with a little support from her cane.

"So much gratitude. She's believed in all of us and cheered us on all the way through and we get to cheer her on now. It's pretty cool," said Elizabeth Jensen, Hislop's granddaughter. "I feel like this is the crowning glory of her amazing career. This is her lifetime achievement award."

Hislop received her master's academic hoop and her diploma.

"Very satisfied, very pleased," Hislop beamed.

She was quick to remind people it's never too late to get a college degree. And this one added one more highlight to her many accomplishments.

When asked what she'd do with the diploma, she smiled.

"Add it to the others I have in the basement," she said.

What was your thesis topic ?  

My thesis, titled The Development of a Postgraduate Family Medicine Artificial Intelligence Curriculum Framework, focused on curricula development, artificial intelligence and postgraduate training. 

Please share a particularly proud moment from your degree?  

I was especially proud when I finally submitted my thesis for final submission.

I would like to shoutout my supervisor Dr. Samira Abbasgholizadeh Rahimi for her guidance throughout my master’s degree and a shoutout to Dr. Pierre Pluye, my supportive co-supervisor, who passed away in 2023. 

Top tip for incoming students in your program?   

To the incoming students entering my program, I would say to surround yourself with a good team (other students, lab members, advisors, librarians, etc.), who can contribute in unique and helpful ways. Also, I would tell incoming students not to worry, and that everyone’s timeline, topic and experience is unique. Your work is worthy, and your timeline is perfect for you.

Anything you’ll miss?  

I am going to miss the amazing staff, faculty and students that I’ve met at McGill’s Department of Family Medicine. 

What’s next for you?   

I am currently working as a researcher in Montreal and will potentially move onto a PhD after.
