Understanding Your Team and Competition

Before you name your team, know your team.

Are you a band of weekend warriors dominating local soccer leagues? Or perhaps a group of coding ninjas set to conquer hackathons? The context is crucial.

A name that wows in an esports tournament might not resonate in a corporate challenge.

Tap into your team’s vibe. Are you the underdogs, the seasoned pros, or the wildcard entrants?

Your name should embody your essence, your mission. And don’t forget to scope out the competition.

Stand out, don’t blend in. Avoid names too close to rivals, or you risk being the echo, not the voice.

Hertz CEO Kathryn Marinello with CFO Jamere Jackson and other members of the executive team in 2017

Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies of 2021

Two cases about Hertz claimed top spots in 2021's Top 40 Most Popular Case Studies

Two cases on the uses of debt and equity at Hertz claimed top spots in the CRDT’s (Case Research and Development Team) 2021 top 40 review of cases.

Hertz (A) took the top spot. The case details the financial structure of the rental car company through the end of 2019. Hertz (B), which ranked third in CRDT’s list, describes the company’s struggles during the early part of the COVID pandemic and its eventual need to enter Chapter 11 bankruptcy.

The success of the Hertz cases was unprecedented for the top 40 list. Usually, cases take a number of years to gain popularity, but the Hertz cases claimed top spots in their first year of release. Hertz (A) also became the first ‘cooked’ case to top the annual review, as all of the other winners had been web-based ‘raw’ cases.

Besides introducing students to the complicated financing required to maintain an enormous fleet of cars, the Hertz cases also expanded the diversity of case protagonists. Kathyrn Marinello was the CEO of Hertz during this period and the CFO, Jamere Jackson is black.

Sandwiched between the two Hertz cases, Coffee 2016, a perennial best seller, finished second. “Glory, Glory, Man United!” a case about an English football team’s IPO made a surprise move to number four.  Cases on search fund boards, the future of malls,  Norway’s Sovereign Wealth fund, Prodigy Finance, the Mayo Clinic, and Cadbury rounded out the top ten.

Other year-end data for 2021 showed:

  • Online “raw” case usage remained steady as compared to 2020 with over 35K users from 170 countries and all 50 U.S. states interacting with 196 cases.
  • Fifty four percent of raw case users came from outside the U.S..
  • The Yale School of Management (SOM) case study directory pages received over 160K page views from 177 countries with approximately a third originating in India followed by the U.S. and the Philippines.
  • Twenty-six of the cases in the list are raw cases.
  • A third of the cases feature a woman protagonist.
  • Orders for Yale SOM case studies increased by almost 50% compared to 2020.
  • The top 40 cases were supervised by 19 different Yale SOM faculty members, several supervising multiple cases.

CRDT compiled the Top 40 list by combining data from its case store, Google Analytics, and other measures of interest and adoption.

All of this year’s Top 40 cases are available for purchase from the Yale Management Media store .

How do you choose an IT team name?

Selecting an appropriate name for your IT team is crucial as it shapes team identity, fosters morale, and can influence how others perceive your team’s capabilities.

Here are some criteria to consider when creating or selecting an effective IT team name:

1. Reflect Team Values and Mission: The chosen name should align with your IT team’s core values and mission. For example, if your team prides itself on quick problem-solving, a name like the “Swift Solution Seekers” may be fitting.

2. Consider Team Functions: Ensure that the name aligns with your team’s primary function within the organization. If your team specializes in technical support, incorporate elements that reflect technical expertise and troubleshooting skills.

3. Maintain Professionalism and Approachability: Strive for a balance between professionalism and approachability in the name. It should convey competence to customers while remaining engaging. A name that instills confidence in the expertise of your IT professionals is essential.

4. Simplicity and Memorability: Opt for a name that is easy to remember and pronounce, both for team members and customers. Simplicity fosters familiarity and enhances communication.

5. Inclusivity and Sensitivity: Ensure the name is inclusive and culturally sensitive, avoiding exclusionary or offensive terms. It should be universally appealing and respectful of diverse backgrounds.

6. Brand Alignment: The chosen name should align with your company’s overall branding and corporate culture. Consider whether your brand is formal or more relaxed, and select a name accordingly.

7. Team Involvement: Encourage team members to participate in the naming process. Involving the team fosters buy-in and can be a team-building exercise, ensuring that the name resonates with those who proudly represent it.

8. Uniqueness and Distinctiveness: Choose a name that stands out and is distinct from other teams or departments within your organization. A unique name helps establish a clear and separate team identity.

9. Test and Gather Feedback: Before finalizing the name, test it with a small group within your organization, and if possible, with a segment of your customer base. Gather feedback to gauge reactions and ensure the name is well-received.

10. Future-Proofing: Consider the long-term vision of your IT team. Select a name that can adapt to potential changes in team roles or shifts in the company’s direction, ensuring its relevance over time.

By adhering to these criteria, you can choose an IT team name that not only represents your team’s values and mission but also resonates with both team members and the broader community it serves.

Case Study Roles & Responsibilities

As you assemble your case study project team, it’s essential to have the right skills and capabilities assigned to the team. Here’s a brief description of the essential roles and responsibilities we use for our projects.

First, a little about roles and responsibilities as we define them. A clear definition of roles and responsibilities is crucial in marketing projects as they help in effective project management, coordination, and ensuring that all necessary functions are fulfilled to achieve project objectives. By defining roles and assigning specific responsibilities to team members, it becomes easier to track progress, allocate resources, and ensure successful project execution.

A role refers to a specific position or function that an individual or a team plays within a marketing project. It defines the area of expertise or the contribution expected from a person or a group of people involved in the project. Roles help establish clarity and delineate the scope of work for each participant, ensuring that all necessary aspects of the project are covered.

Responsibilities

Responsibilities are the specific tasks, duties, and obligations associated with a particular role within a marketing project. They outline the actions and deliverables that individuals or teams are accountable for, ensuring that everyone understands what is expected of them. Responsibilities may include activities such as conducting market research, creating marketing strategies, designing promotional materials, executing campaigns, analyzing data, or managing project timelines and budgets. Depending on the size of a project it’s common for one or more roles to be assigned to the same person. As the number of case studies under development increase in scale and are developed in parallel, these roles may be assigned to specific individuals without responsibility overlap.

Case Study Project Team Roles and Responsibilities

A typical case study team can look like this:

  • Project Lead / Project Manager
  • Writer / Copywriter

Graphic Designer

  • Legal representative / or designated representative
  • Brand representative

Project Lead

Person assigned to oversee and manage the overall success of a case study project. Typically, we assign this to an account manager or a project manager. This person is very detailed-oriented, facilitates meetings well, and is well-organized with their work. This person will work closely with the internal or external client to define the project scope, gather information, and assemble project plans and teams.

Writers play a key role in researching, organizing, and presenting information in a compelling and informative manner. Here are the key responsibilities of a writer in the context of case study development:

  • Research and Information Gathering: Writers conduct thorough research to gather relevant information about the project, its background, objectives, challenges, solutions, and outcomes. They may interview key stakeholders, subject matter experts, or individuals involved in the project to gather insights and firsthand accounts.
  • Storytelling and Narrative Development: Writers are responsible for crafting a coherent and engaging narrative that tells the story of the case study. They structure the information in a logical and compelling way, highlighting the key aspects of the project and its impact. Writers use storytelling techniques to make the case study relatable and engaging for the intended audience.
  • Clarity and Conciseness: Writers ensure that the case study is written in clear and concise language, making it easily understandable for the readers. They communicate complex concepts in a simple and accessible manner, avoiding jargon and technical terms that may confuse or alienate the audience.
  • Formatting and Presentation: Writers organize the content of the case study in a visually appealing and reader-friendly format. They use headings, subheadings, bullet points, and other formatting techniques to enhance readability and enable readers to navigate through the case study efficiently. Writers may also collaborate with graphic designers to incorporate visual elements that support the narrative.
  • Proofreading and Editing: Writers review and revise the case study to ensure grammatical accuracy, clarity, and coherence. They eliminate spelling errors, grammatical mistakes, and inconsistencies in tone and style. Writers may also work closely with editors to refine the content and improve its overall quality.
  • Collaboration with the Project Team: Writers collaborate with other members of the project team, such as subject matter experts, project managers, and stakeholders. They gather feedback, incorporate revisions, and ensure that the case study aligns with the project’s objectives and requirements. Writers may also work closely with designers, illustrators, or photographers to integrate visual elements into the case study.
  • Adhering to Guidelines: Writers follow any specific guidelines or templates provided for the case study development. They ensure that the case study meets the formatting, style, and length requirements. Writers also adhere to any branding or messaging guidelines to maintain consistency with the organization’s identity.

The role of a graphic designer in a case study project is to visually enhance and communicate the information presented in the case study. They are responsible for creating visually appealing and engaging designs that support the narrative and effectively convey key messages. What is a case study?

A case study is an in-depth, detailed analysis of a specific real-world situation. For example, a case study can be about an individual, group, event, organization, or phenomenon. The purpose of a case study is to understand its complexities and gain insights into a particular instance or situation.

In the context of a business, however, case studies take customer success stories and explore how they use your product to help them achieve their business goals.

Case Study Definition LinkedIn Post

As well as being valuable marketing tools , case studies are a good way to evaluate your product as it allows you to objectively examine how others are using it.

It’s also a good way to interview your customers about why they work with you.

Marketing Case Study Template

A marketing case study showcases how your product or services helped potential clients achieve their business goals. You can also create case studies of internal, successful marketing projects. A marketing case study typically includes:

  • Company background and history
  • The challenge
  • How you helped
  • Specific actions taken
  • Visuals or Data
  • Client testimonials

Here’s an example of a marketing case study template:

Whether you’re a B2B or B2C company, business case studies can be a powerful resource to help with your sales, marketing, and even internal departmental awareness.

Business and business management case studies should encompass strategic insights alongside anecdotal and qualitative findings, like in the business case study examples below.

Conduct a B2B case study by researching the company holistically

When it comes to writing a case study, make sure you approach the company holistically and analyze everything from their social media to their sales.

Think about every avenue your product or service has been of use to your case study company, and ask them about the impact this has had on their wider company goals.

Venngage orange marketing case study example

In business case study examples like the one above, we can see that the company has been thought about holistically simply by the use of icons.

By combining social media icons with icons that show in-person communication we know that this is a well-researched and thorough case study.

This case study report example could also be used within an annual or end-of-year report.

Highlight the key takeaway from your marketing case study

To create a compelling case study, identify the key takeaways from your research. Use catchy language to sum up this information in a sentence, and present this sentence at the top of your page.

This is “at a glance” information and it allows people to gain a top-level understanding of the content immediately.

You can use a large, bold, contrasting font to help this information stand out from the page and provide interest.

Learn  how to choose fonts  effectively with our Venngage guide and once you’ve done that.

Upload your fonts and  brand colors  to Venngage using the  My Brand Kit  tool and see them automatically applied to your designs.

The heading is the ideal place to put the most impactful information, as this is the first thing that people will read.

In this example, the stat of “Increase[d] lead quality by 90%” is used as the header. It makes customers want to read more to find out how exactly lead quality was increased by such a massive amount.

If you’re conducting an in-person interview, you could highlight a direct quote or insight provided by your interview subject.

Pick out a catchy sentence or phrase, or the key piece of information your interview subject provided and use that as a way to draw a potential customer in.

Use charts to visualize data in your business case studies

Charts are an excellent way to visualize data and to bring statistics and information to life. Charts make information easier to understand and to illustrate trends or patterns.

Making charts is even easier with Venngage.

In this consulting case study example, we can see that a chart has been used to demonstrate the difference in lead value within the Lead Elves case study.

Adding a chart here helps break up the information and add visual value to the case study.

Red SAAS Business Case Study Template

Using charts in your case study can also be useful if you’re creating a project management case study.

You could use a Gantt chart or a project timeline to show how you have managed the project successfully.

Use direct quotes to build trust in your marketing case study

To add an extra layer of authenticity you can include a direct quote from your customer within your case study.

According to research from Nielsen , 92% of people will trust a recommendation from a peer and 70% trust recommendations even if they’re from somebody they don’t know.

Case study peer recommendation quote

So if you have a customer or client who can’t stop singing your praises, make sure you get a direct quote from them and include it in your case study.

You can either lift part of the conversation or interview, or you can specifically request a quote. Make sure to ask for permission before using the quote.

Contrast Lead Generation Business Case Study Template

This design uses a bright contrasting speech bubble to show that it includes a direct quote, and helps the quote stand out from the rest of the text.

This will help draw the customer’s attention directly to the quote, in turn influencing them to use your product or service.

Less is often more, and this is especially true when it comes to creating designs. Whilst you want to create a professional-looking, well-written and design case study – there’s no need to overcomplicate things.

These simple case study examples show that smart clean designs and informative content can be an effective way to showcase your successes.

Use colors and fonts to create a professional-looking case study

This means the normal rules of design apply. Use fonts, colors, and icons to create an interesting and visually appealing case study.

In this case study example, we can see how multiple fonts have been used to help differentiate between the headers and content, as well as complementary colors and eye-catching icons.

Add long term goals in your case study

When creating a case study it’s a great idea to look at both the short term and the long term goals of the company to gain the best understanding possible of the insights they provide.

Short-term goals will be what the company or person hopes to achieve in the next few months, and long-term goals are what the company hopes to achieve in the next few years.

Check out this modern pattern design example of a case study below:

Lead generation business case study template

In this case study example, the short and long-term goals are clearly distinguished by light blue boxes and placed side by side so that they are easy to compare.

Use a strong introductory paragraph to outline the overall strategy and goals before outlining the specific short-term and long-term goals to help with clarity.

This strategy can also be handy when creating a consulting case study.

Use data to make concrete points about your sales and successes

When conducting any sort of research stats, facts, and figures are like gold dust (aka, really valuable).

Being able to quantify your findings is important to help understand the information fully. Saying sales increased 10% is much more effective than saying sales increased.

While sales dashboards generally tend it make it all about the numbers and charts, in sales case study examples, like this one, the key data and findings can be presented with icons. This contributes to the potential customer’s better understanding of the report.

They can clearly comprehend the information and it shows that the case study has been well researched.

82% of marketers use case studies in their marketing  because it’s such an effective tool to help quickly gain customers’ trust and to showcase the potential of your product.

Why are case studies such an important tool in content marketing?

By writing a case study you’re telling potential customers that they can trust you because you’re showing them that other people do.

Not only that, but if you have a SaaS product, business case studies are a great way to show how other people are effectively using your product in their company.

In this case study, Network is demonstrating how their product has been used by Vortex Co. with great success; instantly showing other potential customers that their tool works and is worth using.

Case studies are particularly effective as a sales technique.

A sales case study is like an extended customer testimonial, not only sharing opinions of your product – but showcasing the results you helped your customer achieve.

Make impactful statistics pop in your sales case study

Writing a case study doesn’t mean using text as the only medium for sharing results.

You should use icons to highlight areas of your research that are particularly interesting or relevant, like in this example of a case study:

Icons are a great way to help summarize information quickly and can act as visual cues to help draw the customer’s attention to certain areas of the page.

In some of the business case study examples above, icons are used to represent the impressive areas of growth and are presented in a way that grabs your attention.

Use high contrast shapes and colors to draw attention to key information in your sales case study

Help the key information stand out within your case study by using high contrast shapes and colors.

Use a complementary or contrasting color, or use a shape such as a rectangle or a circle for maximum impact.

Coupled with icons and strong statistics, this information stands out on the page and is easily digestible and retainable for a potential customer.

Case Study Examples Summary

Once you have created your case study, it’s best practice to update your examples on a regular basis to include up-to-date statistics, data, and information.

Case studies are important marketing tools – but they shouldn’t be the only tool in your toolbox. Content marketing is also a valuable way to earn consumer trust.

Case Study FAQ

Why should you write a case study.

Case studies are an effective marketing technique to engage potential customers and help build trust.

By producing case studies featuring your current clients or customers, you are showcasing how your tool or product can be used. You’re also showing that other people endorse your product.

In addition to being a good way to gather positive testimonials from existing customers , business case studies are good educational resources and can be shared amongst your company or team, and used as a reference for future projects.

How should you write a case study?

To create a great case study, you should think strategically. The first step, before starting your case study research, is to think about what you aim to learn or what you aim to prove.

You might be aiming to learn how a company makes sales or develops a new product. If this is the case, base your questions around this.

How to Come Up With a Business Team Name

The name of your business team can be a very important part of your success, but choosing a name can be a daunting task. From simple color choices for your business logo to company names to trademarks, choosing the right team name can help your company stand out from the crowd.

A great way to come up with a business team name is to check-in with your business goals. What does your business want to accomplish? What values does it wish to promote?

What do you want people to associate with your business, or with your team? This will help you come up with a good team name.

Below are a few important steps for choosing a catchy business team name:

Brainstorm a list of business team name ideas with your team

When naming your business team, the first important step is to brainstorm a list of some good business team names with your friends and teammates.

Sit with your teammates and discuss the missions and values of your project or business. And then start thinking of related words and phrases that can be used in your business team name.

You can also use any online business team name generator to come up with some unique business team name ideas.

Don’t choose a name that’s already been used

It’s important to choose your business team name carefully, so that it fits with your business’s culture, values, and stands out. Why?

Because when people visit your business they will first see your name which is always the first impression of any business team. So, you should make sure that your business team name is unique.

Choosing a name that is unique or distinctive is important, but you also need to check the name with a trademark search before you use it to avoid problems down the line.

A simple name is better than a complicated name

A good business name has the ability to establish a sense of style, which is a distinct advantage when it comes to branding and marketing your business in the public eye. Keep it short and simple to make it stick in people’s minds.

Also, if your name will be short and simple, it will be more likely to remember and people will easily find your business team name online on the web.

Don’t use a name that’s too difficult to pronounce

When choosing a business team name, you want to pick something that will help your company achieve its goals but won’t be difficult to say or spell.

Make sure the name is pronounceable. A name that is hard or impossible to pronounce will make it more difficult for customers to remember and communicate without hesitation.

Avoid negative business team names

In the world of businesses, nothing is more important than a name. That’s why it’s so important to choose a name that represents your business in a positive way.

A common mistake startups make is choosing a name that is negative, derogatory, or too similar to a well-known competitor’s name.

Choosing a name that sounds similar to existing businesses may be confusing for potential customers. Negative names can also cause legal issues for your company when it comes to registering your business name.

You must know that a bad name can ruin the business’ reputation. So, how do you avoid a bad name? You can either choose your own name or create a name that does not have a negative connotation.

Shortlist some of your favorite business team names

Once you come up with a list of some good business team names, your next step should be to shortlist some of your favorite names from your list.

When shortlisting your favorite names, keep these important things to keep in mind:

  • Keep it meaningful and clear.
  • Avoid Misspelling.
  • Use related to your business, product, or service.

Get some feedback

In my experience, the easiest way to choose a name for my business is to ask people what they like. There are a few reasons for this.

First, you will know what a handful of people in your network like, so you can eliminate those choices if they are not something you really like.

Second, if the name is something that you really like, it means that it’s something that will be easy to remember and is not too difficult to spell. Either way, you will found that if you ask people what they like, you’ll get a lot of ideas and lots of feedback.

Make sure your selected team name is available as a domain name

Before deciding on a name for your business team the last and the most important thing is to make sure your name is available as a domain name. Check it on Domain.com .

Teams That Changed The World (Team Case Studies)

During our lifetime there are an abundance of occasions in which we are required to work as part of a team; most notably in the workplace, and because of this, organisations are habitually faced with complex problems, sometimes in higher levels of pressure circumstances.

Team development is more than just running team meetings and ticking of boxes. It involves making hard decisions, and working for the good of others even when the end is not in sight. Great teams cultivate a sense of psychological safety across the organization— from senior executive all the way down to entry-level colleagues.

What it Takes to Build a Top-Performing Team

The proper formation and careful maintenance of a team is crucial to the team's performance and success. Establishing a diverse team with mixed skills and strengths can improve team effectiveness and productivity. They also have a positive effect on the team's dynamics and help everyone achieve key goals individually and together.

Another vital element is communication. By communicating with one another and understanding each other’s communication styles and preferences, a shared culture is created.

Disagreements can be avoided (or easily resolved), with people understanding their individual and group roles in order for each team member to be striving for the same collective goal.

Research lead by Google  has concluded that the best teams included team members who listen to one another and show sensitivity. Studies have also shown that when people work in high performing teams, in contrast to working alone, they are more productive and report greater job satisfaction.

Working in a team results faster innovation, quicker mistake detection and correction, better problem-solving, and greater performance according to research findings.

History is littered with top performing team case studies, and in this article we will look at the three top performing teams that we believe changed the world as we know it.

Before we dive into the case studies, if you're wanting to build a high performing team then you should take a look at QuizBreaker . It's an all-in-one team engagement platform that helps brings teams closer together through a variety of great tools. They offer a 7 day free trial too.

NASA’s Apollo 11

A huge milestone for science and for mankind, NASA’s 1969 Apollo 11 mission is a great demonstration of high-performing teams.

Televised across the world, three astronauts made the revolutionary journey toward the moon and two of the three astronauts stepped foot onto the moon’s surface, creating history.

Whilst Neil Armstrong, Buzz Aldrin and Michael Collins are the well-known faces of this prodigious achievement, they wouldn’t have made it to the history books without the efforts of their supporting team - years of previous research and expertise allowed this mission to take place and succeed.

NASA’s Apollo 11

For two years prior to the operation, mission planners studied the moon’s surface using photographs from satellites and the Surveyor spacecraft, to find the best place for Apollo 11 to land. They needed to consider the geography of the surface, factoring in craters, boulders and cliffs, as well as the best time to land due to the positioning of the sun.

NASA’s Apollo 11

NASA has estimated that more than 400,000 people made the moon landings possible; scientists, engineers and technicians, who had never worked in aerospace before, were given contracts to design a machine capable of transporting humans safely to out of space.

The astronauts visited the laboratories in order to create a human connection to foster a more cohesive team – the workers met the men whose lives were in their hands. In the operations control room, during each flight, there were numerous technicians guiding and supporting those heading into outer space. Essentially, each step of the way, communication was paramount, enabling the team behind NASA’s Apollo 11 to achieve a historical milestone.

The Manhattan Project

The American-led mission to develop the world’s first atomic weapon during WW2 was code-named the Manhattan Project .

It was and still is, thought of as a highly controversial assignment, though it is hard to dispute that it is an excellent example of a top performing senior leadership team.

The task began in 1942 after authorisation from U.S. President Roosevelt. Utilising the minds’ of some of the world’s leading scientists and military personnel, the Manhattan Project started as an attempt to beat the Nazis in a race against time to build a nuclear weapon. However, with hindsight, we now know that the Nazis would not be successful in their attempts to build an atomic bomb.

The Manhattan Project

Involving over 130,000 individuals, spread across 13 locations in the United States of America and Canada, and all sworn to secrecy, this mammoth of a project had a huge risk of exposure and sabotage and therefore communication and coordination would be vital to this mission’s success.

The Manhattan Project

One of the reasons why the Manhattan Project is considered one of the greatest examples of the top performing team case studies is that often, within the realm of research and invention, scientists have a desire to compete against others in order to gain notoriety for their work.

However in this instance, scientists (and other specialists) worked within a team and adopted a group mentality in order to achieve a shared goal.

The Royal Society of London

The Royal Society of London is a classic and old example of a top performing team. Granted a royal charter by King Charles II, the Royal Society of London was the first national scientific institution in the world.

Founded in 1660 and often referred to as “the invisible college”, the society was orchestrated by its team leaders in order to encourage the exchange of scientific and philosophic ideas and theories. The society’s motto “Nullius in verba” is translated as “take nobody’s word for it”. The motto was upheld as a manifest of the members’ drive to verify all statements by the means of scientific facts and experimental research findings.

The Royal Society of London

Notable members over the years have included the legendary Sir Isaac Newton, Charles Darwin, Albert Einstein, and Stephen Hawking.

When the society was formed, during a time dominated by prejudice, war and political unrest, the group prided itself of the fact that it accepted members of all backgrounds.

Papers were exchanged between the scientific scholars, and within the space of just 70 years the science we employ in everyday life today was developed. This includes the sciences of anatomy, astronomy, botany, chemistry, physics and zoology.

The team’s achievements were established on a foundation of trust, support and respect, as well as a collective goal – the advancement of science.

In the world of sports, when thinking about top performing team case studies, one famous team in particular comes to mind.

The New Zealand national rugby union team

The All Blacks , are considered to be one of the greatest performing international teams in history.

Representing a country of just 4.5 million inhabitants, the All Blacks appear to be an untouchable team. They have won the title in 3 World Cups and accomplish a better ratio of wins than other sports teams, making them the foremost sports franchise in history.

In their 125 year long history, the All Blacks have won more than three-quarter of the games they have participated in which is a statistic unsurpassed by any other national sports team. Despite the frequent long periods of time spent away from family whilst touring for matches internationally, the team have a strong determination and drive to achieve a common goal - to win every game and maintain their reputation. All Black team players, including the coach, are seen as equal and as important components in the creation and maintenance of a successful team.

The All Blacks

Nature - Birds

There are even examples of effective team performance in nature; think of geese, for example, each winter the flock work together in order to achieve their common goal - reaching their seasonal destination. Communicating by honking at one another, they encourage those who appear to be losing momentum or getting tired.

Or, by flying in a v-shape formation, the geese reduce the drag for those behind them. The same principles could be implemented in an organisational team. Or, by nurturing a team mentality, all members share a common goal and feel supported by one another.

Birds

History teaches us that in order for teams to be successful, the conditions must be right. Nurturing management styles, and awareness of others working styles are just some of the contributing factors that aid the creation of a high performance team.

Google’s " Project Aristotle " has highlighted the fact that when individuals join an organisational team, they do not want to leave their individuality and personality at home. People want to be their true selves and feel that they are free to share ideas and thoughts in a psychologically safe environment.

Communication, empathy and mutual understanding all create a productive environment for increased performance and job satisfaction.

By understanding each other’s work styles, strengths and attributes, work stops becoming an act of labour and becomes a collective goal or mission.

No man is an island. Business is a team sport!

Case Study: Are the Right People in the Right Seats?

  • Nitin Nohria

case study team name

A new CEO considers changes to her top team.

The newly appointed CEO of Highstreet Properties has doubts about several members of the top team she has inherited. She’s trying to drive a turnaround, the company has a complicated matrix structure, and some team members seem opposed to her strategy. She’s debating replacing several of them, but she’s worried about making too many changes too quickly, upsetting her board, and bringing in too many former colleagues.

Shannon Levy, the new CEO of Highstreet Properties, stared out the window of the company’s London headquarters, wondering whether she should call Justin Mooney and fire him. A once-thriving developer of retail malls, Highstreet had been battered by consumers’ shift to e-commerce, Covid-19 mall closures, and internal discord over strategy. Shannon had been brought in to turn the business around. She was fast approaching her 100-day mark and already feeling behind on selecting, aligning, and motivating her senior leadership team.

Case study definition

case study team name

Case study, a term which some of you may know from the "Case Study of Vanitas" anime and manga, is a thorough examination of a particular subject, such as a person, group, location, occasion, establishment, phenomena, etc. They are most frequently utilized in research of business, medicine, education and social behaviour. There are a different types of case studies that researchers might use:

• Collective case studies

• Descriptive case studies

• Explanatory case studies

• Exploratory case studies

• Instrumental case studies

• Intrinsic case studies

Case studies are usually much more sophisticated and professional than regular essays and courseworks, as they require a lot of verified data, are research-oriented and not necessarily designed to be read by the general public.

How to write a case study?

It very much depends on the topic of your case study, as a medical case study and a coffee business case study have completely different sources, outlines, target demographics, etc. But just for this example, let's outline a coffee roaster case study. Firstly, it's likely going to be a problem-solving case study, like most in the business and economics field are. Here are some tips for these types of case studies:

• Your case scenario should be precisely defined in terms of your unique assessment criteria.

• Determine the primary issues by analyzing the scenario. Think about how they connect to the main ideas and theories in your piece.

• Find and investigate any theories or methods that might be relevant to your case.

• Keep your audience in mind. Exactly who are your stakeholder(s)? If writing a case study on coffee roasters, it's probably gonna be suppliers, landlords, investors, customers, etc.

• Indicate the best solution(s) and how they should be implemented. Make sure your suggestions are grounded in pertinent theories and useful resources, as well as being realistic, practical, and attainable.

• Carefully proofread your case study. Keep in mind these four principles when editing: clarity, honesty, reality and relevance.

Call for Case Studies: Strategic Action for Urban Health

The WHO Urban Health team is seeking examples that illustrate a strategic approach to urban health. Collectively, these case studies are intended to show that such an approach can originate and flourish from a wide range of entry points across a diversity of sectors and scales, while leveraging many different combinations of partners. The case studies will inform a major global WHO report on strategic action for urban health, expected in fall 2024. Selected cases will be developed for inclusion in the report; the urban health team will work with submitters of these cases to produce concise summaries. All submitted cases that meet eligibility criteria will be promoted and made available on the WHO website and, as appropriate, in subsequent publications.

Background to this call

The health of urban populations emerges from the interactions of urban environments with the behaviour of individual actors and human institutions. Urban health is both a measure of the levels and patterns of health and wellbeing in cities and the art and science of safeguarding and continually improving them.

Because every aspect of urban life can affect human wellbeing, urban health relies on action across all sectors—not only within health, but across planning, housing, transportation, water, sanitation, energy, and many others. This breadth of influences is widely recognized, yet urban health action has often focused on improving health impacts within a single sector or system, or alternatively, on addressing a narrowly defined set of health outcomes, modifying certain key behaviours, or improving health for a particular population group.

Such efforts have widely succeeded in improving urban health outcomes, and cities are healthier, on average, than rural areas. Yet, much remains to be done. Urban areas feature large—and often growing—health inequities, especially in slums and informal settlements. In virtually all cities, there remain unrealized opportunities to improve health and health equity.

Moreover, the actions needed to improve health in cities often positively impact other goals of sustainable development. There is thus tremendous potential for achieving co-benefits through an approach that accounts for dynamic interactions across sectors.

Achieving the highest levels of urban health—and realizing its wide-ranging potential co-benefits—requires coordinating action across all urban sectors and systems while anticipating future challenges. That is, it depends on a strategy to sustainably mainstream health across urban policy and practice. This ‘strategic’ approach to urban health depends, among other things, on sophisticated arrangements for governance and finance, generating and working with evidence, fostering innovation, and generating and sustaining effective partnerships while promoting broad participation.

WHO’s urban health team has been working to develop guidance on strategic action for urban health, including through a recent series of policy briefs focusing on these issues. This case study call will add to this effort, helping to make visible the relevance, potential, and possibilities of strategic action.

Eligibility criteria and call information

Case studies may represent action at national or subnational (e.g., province, state, municipality, or city) scales and should describe specific interventions, policies, institutions, partnerships, or other pertinent efforts. They need not involve the health sector (though many will) but should be relevant to the health and wellbeing of urban residents. Cases need not represent unqualified successes—indeed, cases that illustrate barriers to success or failed attempts at strategic action will be considered. We are seeking illustrative cases representing all regions, cultures, and levels of development, and a diverse range of urban contexts (including different city sizes, demographic profiles, informal communities, governance structures, and other factors).

This call is for cases that illustrate strategic action, as described in the WHO Strategic Guide to Urban Health Policy briefs. Cases that highlight potential or intended actions that have yet to be formalized or initiated will not be accepted. Likewise, cases that describe narrowly focused interventions or research related to health determinants, risk factors, or outcomes will not be considered unless linked to broader strategic action. We are particularly interested in cases that can demonstrate evidence of health impacts.

Cases should:

  • involve a diversity of stakeholders (both government and non-government)
  • encompass multiple sectors and health outcomes
  • illustrate one or more of the eight principles underlying a strategic approach to urban health referenced in the WHO Strategic Guide to Urban Health Policy briefs.
  • ideally, be relevant to one or more of the cross-cutting recommendations from the WHO Strategic Guide for Urban Health policy briefs.
  • represent action currently underway or implemented during the past decade.

Please review the principles and recommendations in the policy briefs to ensure that your case meets the established criteria.

Any stakeholder involved in managing the actions described is invited to submit a case study by completing the survey form here .

In responding, you will be asked to provide basic contact and descriptive information, describe how your case is relevant to the principles and recommendations, answer several questions intended to capture key elements (e.g., context, enablers and barriers, what was done and by who, outcomes) with short textual summaries, and supply additional materials to enrich and substantiate your description (potentially including figures, photos or video, internal or external reports, links to media coverage, or other). Your complete, clear answers will help us ensure that cases are relevant and useful.

The deadline for case submission is July 30, 2024. Please be prepared to work with the WHO team to produce a concise summary if your submission is selected for inclusion in the WHO global report. Any questions can be directed to [email protected] .

Wild African elephants address each other with name-like rumbling calls: study

Science Wild African elephants address each other with name-like rumbling calls: study

Two small elephants intertwine trunks next to a water body

African elephants are a highly social bunch with tonnes of different ways to communicate.

They greet each other by intertwining trunks and express strong emotions by trumpeting. They are even thought to send messages over large distances with ground-based vibrations, which could be detected through their feet.

Now researchers behind a new study in Nature Ecology and Evolution believe wild elephants may be able to communicate with other members of their group by using sounds akin to names.

Dolphins and some birds are reported to develop a signature call which other members of their species can used to identify them or copy to get their attention.

But Colorado State University behavioural ecologist Mickey Pardo, lead author of the new study, believes elephant calls are more similar to how humans use arbitrary names rather than imitations used by other species.

"Elephants are among the few mammals that are capable of learning to produce new sounds , which is a prerequisite for having names," he said.

A man in a tan t-shirt takes a selfie in front of two elephants under some trees of an African plain with mountains in the back

Elephant talk 101

Human names are conveyed through speech, but an elephant "name" sounds a lot different.

One of an African elephant's most common forms of communication are vocalisations known as rumbles, which can sound a bit like a growl or roar.

"It's actually easier for elephants to learn to produce rumbles on command than it is for them to learn to produce trumpets on command," Dr Pardo said.

To the inexperienced ear, elephant rumbles can sound the same or very similar, but Dr Pardo said that's akin to an alien assuming humans have a modest vocal repertoire of crying, laughing, screaming or speech.

"If you thought about it that way, you would be missing all the interesting stuff about human communication," he said.

Inspired by the work of behavioural biologist Stephanie King , who found dolphins could identify others by repeating signature calls , Dr Pardo wanted to dig deep into the rumbles of elephants, another big-brained mammal, to find if something similar was going on.

To do this, he and his colleagues analysed recordings of 469 rumbles made by groups of wild African elephant females and their young at Amboseli National Park and Samburu and Buffalo Springs National Reserves in Kenya over 36 years.

While there are many different contexts for rumbles, the research team focused on three:

  • Contact — where elephants try to make contact with other family members over a long distance or when out of sight
  • Greeting — when elephants approach each other within touching distance
  • Caregiving — when adult or adolescent females give comfort to or communicate with a young calf.

They used an artificial intelligence model to figure out which elephant was being addressed in each recorded call.

The next step was to play calls containing "names" to 17 wild elephants.

"I found that they reacted much more strongly to calls that were originally addressed to them than to calls from the same caller that were originally addressed to someone else," Dr Pardo said.

"That indicates that they can tell just by hearing a call whether it was addressed to them or not."

Behaviours explained

For some of the long-time elephant researchers involved with the study, the findings appear to confirm unexplained interactions they had witnessed before.

Joyce Poole — a conservationist, biologist and co-founder of not-for-profit Elephant Voices — said she had seen an elephant rumble out a contact call in the past, but noticed only one member of their group responded while others ignored them.

"Other times a different individual would answer, or perhaps none of the elephants that I was with answered," she said.

"Since the caller listened after calling, I knew she was waiting for an answer.

"It made me wonder whether the elephants were 'rude' and simply ignoring one another or whether she wasn't calling the particular family members that I was with."

Harvard Medical School behavioural ecologist Caitlin O'Connell-Rodwell, who was not involved in the study, thought the findings were the tip of the iceberg for understanding elephant vocal complexity.

"[The study] puts a lot in perspective and totally makes sense as far as elephants trying to communicate over a kilometre or so, and wanting to address a specific individual," Dr O'Connell-Rodwell said.

Dr O'Connell-Rodwell said she had previously assumed elephants which reacted without delay to a call must have been an immediate family member.

"Over time, I saw a more complex pattern emerging, but didn't know exactly what individuals were cueing in on," she said.

"This study very carefully assessed these situations and vocalisations and provided a quantitative answer to my long-standing question of why certain individuals responded more intently, other than the possibility of being more closely related."

What's in a name?

Although the new study's researchers believe they have found evidence of elephant names, they can't really tell how they are structured within the calls.

The human ear has a hard time detecting elements of elephant rumbles, which can be low on the decibel register.

Colorado State University wildlife conservation biologist George Wittemyer, a study co-author, said not understanding how elephant calls were encoded was a bit like not understanding an alphabet in human language.

Further research could also help understand if each elephant has a specific "name", or if they have a few different names that are used by different callers.

Smiling headshot of Associate Professor Amanda Ridley from the University of Western Australia.

With room for interpretation, University of Western Australia behavioural ecologist Amanda Ridley, who was not part of the study, said whether name-like calls were truly being used by the African elephants was unclear.

"What I do think is convincing in the study is that they are using specific vocal information to address specific individuals," she said.

"This could be considered 'names' in some contexts."

But Dr Ridley said she thought it was the most convincing case of non-human name-use, which wasn't imitated , so far discovered in the animal kingdom.

"I think it highly possible other species do this as well, but the specific research to test this hasn't been conducted on them yet," she said.
