Baby Daddy (2012-2017)

Taking a page from some of the best Hallmark Channel movies , the indie romance Brimming With Love featured many of the standard plot points found in any meet-cute film. A workaholic journalist named Allie (Asbille) agrees to be matched by coffee shop owner and matchmaker Sam (Jonathan Keltz) but she soon finds her real match is the matchmaker himself. Even if it didn't set the world on fire, Brimming With Love proved that Asbille had what it took to anchor a movie, and she turned in a convincing performance.

Embeds (2017)

Almost no one saw the 2017 political comedy series Embeds , but the six-episode show offered up some of Kelsey Asbille's best humorous work so far. A handful of young embedded reporters follow around a long-shot presidential candidate as he caucuses in Iowa. Asbille's turn as Marissa was the perfect combination of pluck and determination, and the show's writing actually gave its youthful cast a lot to work with. Even if it only stuck around for six episodes, Embeds gave actors like Asbille a chance to shine.

Pair of Kings (2010-2013)

For Kelsey Asbille the past year has provided an opportunity for a different type of semester abroad. The South Carolina native has been attending Columbia University—where she’s studying human rights with a specialization in indigenous issues—but the chance to put schoolwork on hold to film Yellowstone , the hit series that premiered this summer on the Paramount Network, was too good to pass up.

“Some westerns paint the world as they want it to be, but Yellowstone tries to understand what’s really going on,” Asbille says. “It’s a story that hasn’t already been told.”

The time off also offered an opportunity for Asbille, who started acting in her teens and had her breakout moment in 2017, courtesy of the movie Wind River , to pursue interests best explored outside the classroom.

For example, earlier this year she got a crash course in fashion when she accompanied Calvin Klein chief creative officer Raf Simons to the CFDA Fashion Awards. And while Asbille is hopeful that Yellowstone will be renewed for a second season, she says she’s just as likely to be found in the coming months back on the Columbia campus as on another Hollywood set. “It’s nice to take a step away from the industry,” she says, “and really challenge yourself.”

American actor Kelsey Chow, best known for her parts on "One Tree Hill" (The WB/The CW, 2003-2012), "Pair of Kings" (Disney XD, 2010-13) and the critically-acclaimed 2017 crime drama "Wind River," was born and raised in a multi-racial family (her father was Chinese and her mother American) in Columbia, South Carolina.

Chow's interest in acting began at a very young age. She began acting in local community plays throughout her hometown of Columbia, before landing her first TV role at the age of 13 on "One Tree Hill." Chow played Gigi on the series for four years, from 2005 to 2009.

After her run on the series ended, Chow nabbed a recurring role as Mikayla on the Disney XD series "Pair of Kings." She played Mikayla on all three seasons of the show. Shortly after "Pair of Kings" ended, Chow began adding film parts to her credit list. She appeared in "Run" and "The Wine of Summer" in 2013, as well as the historical drama "Full of Grace" in 2015.

Chow returned to television acting in 2015 when she nabbed a part on "Teen Wolf" (MTV, 2011-17) - a role which she held through 2016. The following year Chow appeared on the Go90 series "Embeds" (2017), as well as in the critically-acclaimed crime drama "Wind River," the latter of which had her working with Oscar-nominated writer/director Taylor Sheridan.

Chow worked with Sheridan once again the following year on the TV series "Yellowstone." The series, which also starred Kevin Costner, premiered on the Paramount Network in June of 2018.

Yellowstone's Kelsey Asbille Credits This Famous Actor For Her Acting Skills

Actress Kelsey Asbille is best known for her performance as Monica Dutton on the Paramount Network's hit neo-Western series " Yellowstone ." She plays the Native American college professor wife of Kayce Dutton (Luke Grimes), the noble warrior son of wealthy rancher John Dutton (Kevin Costner). She's the moral compass of the show, uncomfortable with the worst things the Duttons do, but willing to enact brutal frontier justice on evildoers she feels deserve it. The character doesn't always get the show's best material, but Asbille always does a good job with what she's given. And she credits some of her acting skills to a certain famous actor she happened to meet when she was young.

Years before "Yellowstone," Asbille was a child actor, appearing in shows like the long-running teen drama "One Tree Hill" as a gawky high school student named Gigi Silveri and the Disney XD sitcom "Pair of Kings" as a fearless resident of the island nation of Kinkow. For a while, she was part of the Disney Channel universe, which has served as the launchpad for a shocking number of adult stars.

"He was at the table read — which you really wouldn't expect — and he sort of mentored us all through the sitcom," Asbille told W Magazine . "It was almost surreal." Smith, of course, got his start on the sitcom "The Fresh Prince of Bel Air," so he knows a thing or two about sitcom acting.

Unfortunately for Asbille, she didn't keep in touch with the Smiths, and now she gets her mentorship the same way as the rest of us: from Will Smith's social media. "I follow him on Instagram and that's where I get all my life advice now, from Will Smith's Instagram," she said. "I sound like a stalker but, honestly, that whole family is incredible."

“The first time I met Jeremy [Renner], I had all my attack makeup on with bruises and blood running down my face,” Kelsey Asbille recalls. “He came up to me and said, ‘Be careful out there, darlin’.'”

The actors were on set for “Wind River,” written and directed by Taylor Sheridan, and Renner was addressing Asbille in character as Natalie, a young Native American woman whose body is discovered in the back country snow of a Wyoming reservation. That isn’t in any way a spoiler; it’s the opening scene of the film . Sheridan’s Western murder mystery hinges on her disappearance and follows U.S. Fish and Wildlife Service agent (Renner) and FBI agent (a tough Elizabeth Olsen) investigating the circumstances of her death.

The petite actress came up through the Disney cannon, racking up additional roles on shows such as “One Tree Hill” and “Teen Wolf.” “Wind River” requires Asbille to carry a particularly violent scene and marks the unassuming actress as someone who’s able to make the shift from teen acting to confronting mature roles with aplomb.

“They let you know beforehand about the sexual violence that was included to make sure you were comfortable with it, and it was something that, as an actress, I didn’t want to back away from,” says Asbille, soft-spoken and deliberate. “It’s one of the first roles where I felt such responsibility to the character — not only due to my heritage, but also just as a woman going through that kind of circumstance.”

The 25-year-old actress, who hails from South Carolina, is part Cherokee (Eastern Band) and half Chinese.

“It’s an honor for me to play on my Native side or Asian side — it’s always an honor and responsibility,” she continues. “The film is very fortuitous with what is going on with Standing Rock, and I was very involved with that. I went up there; I tried to listen to women who were in that situation and what they went through. I wanted to make sure that there was a strength to [Natalie], even in that [pivotal] moment [of the film],” Asbille recalls. “I was very nervous beforehand, but by the end of [filming], I was very confident with how it was captured and represented.”

Already an accomplished screenwriter, “Wind River” is Sheridan’s directorial debut and his latest meditation on the modern American frontier; he also wrote “Hell or High Water,” for which he received Oscar and Golden Globe nominations for Best Original Screenplay, and “Sicario.” “Wind River” premiered at Sundance in January and again during the Cannes Film Festival , where it screened in the Un Certain Regard category and earned Sheridan an award for best directing. Harvey Weinstein accepted the award on his behalf during the festival, reading a prepared statement that highlighted indigenous issues. In part: “It is a great shame of my nation, the manner it has treated the original inhabitants of North America. Sadly, my government continues that shame through an insidious mixture of apathy and exploitation.”

While “Wind River” is a relatively quiet film compared to the summer’s mega-hyped blockbusters, its message has benefited from the backing of an influential mainstream industry player — coming from Weinstein, the sentiment hits a wider circumference. “I think with Harvey Weinstein backing the film, he makes the story accessible on a global level, which means that the story gets heard around the world,” Asbille says. “I think that’s incredibly important, and I know that Taylor has been so grateful to work with Harvey.”

The version of the film shown at Cannes featured one very notable addition from its Sundance world premiere: text overlay at the end highlighting statistics — or rather, the lack of statistics — on indigenous women who have gone missing or been attacked.

“I think it’s really great that they have added that, because it grounds the film in reality,” Asbille says. “And the reason that you see so many women at a protest like Standing Rock is because of the violence and sexual assault that happens when these pipelines come in and the workers come in, because nine out of 10 of the attackers are non-native. So it’s a statistic that you don’t want to hear but need to,” she continues. “I think Taylor does a great job of showing you the problem so that you can do something about it. He brings it to peoples’ attention so that it becomes a social film, rather than a political one.”

As for Asbille, she’s working to make an influence off-screen as well, studying human rights as a student at Columbia University. “I’m focusing on indigenous peoples’ rights. I’m incredibly driven and want to be able to help in any way.”

She certainly has her hands full. In addition to academics, this fall she’ll appear in the ABC comedy series “Splitting Up Together” and has also re-teamed with Sheridan to film the upcoming Paramount Network series “Yellowstone,” alongside Kevin Costner.

The Cut: Kelsey Asbille on the importance of empathy and the future of cinema

This week, we get to know Kelsey Asbille: a theatre-raised actress who turned to both the small and silver screen, picking up sharp and well-chosen roles. Now, she’s as well rounded as they come; going back to university – and New York’s Columbia nonetheless – to study Human Rights, Asbille sought to enhance her understanding of the real world and the characters she plays. Breaking out as Gigi Silveri in the hit noughties show,  One Tree Hill , Kelsey Asbille has since worked with the likes of Emily Kapnek and John Linson. Collaborating on two projects with writer-director Taylor Sheridan Asbille has used her personal and learnt knowledge of the Native American community to explore the cultural difficulties and bring a voice to the underrepresented. For The Cut this week, photographer Max Montgomery shoots the star and we get to know how Kelsey Asbille became the woman she is today, as she steps into the shoes of many different humans in life and in her studies…

Columbia kicked my ass but it was well worth it. I’m a nerd in that way I like going to school. But yeah, it really informs my work and it informs my life: it’s been wonderful. It’s weird being 26 because me and my younger sister happen to be doing our finals at the same time – it’s really connected us.

What spurred you to go back to study Human Rights?

It’s been a constant back and forth for me between work and school. It seemed like a good idea to go to New York and be in a school setting and challenge my own way of thinking. I see it as a strange vacation!

Where do you think it’s leading you?

I was interested in global health and that’s taken me to human rights and indigenous rights. With that I got to go to the UN this year which was an incredible experience. For me school is this constant reinvention so I’ll have to see where it takes me!

Has it influenced your acting career and what roles you take on?

Definitely. My character in  Yellowstone  is a middle-school teacher on a Indian reservation. I took this really interesting class this year about the approach to contemporary Native American education. It’s really going hand-in-hand: it’s kind of bizarre.

In  Wind River  as well, you play someone who has been minoritized as an individual and as a community – did that cross your mind when you were studying?

Absolutely. I was deciding my major before I booked  Wind River . Then once I’d joined that film it was one of those strange life moments where it all comes together. When I realised this is definitely what I want to do, this is definitely what I want to study. It’s taught me so much about my career and my life, about empathy.

What was it like to play that role and learn about the culture?

I think the experience was transformative in both my life and my work. I got to bring  Wind River  home to the Native American film festival in my home town. At the same time to be on a set with that crew and cast as an actress was a really unique experience.

Do you think actors and directors have a responsibility to make socially conscious films?

I think with Taylor [director of Wind River] it’s really important that social messages come though with his art. I think that is a very important cause. All in all, film should be about a story that makes you feel something.

How do you feel as a woman in the post-Weinstein Hollywood era?

I’m excited for the future is the most positive thing I can say about it. I think in life it’s about making life better for future generations, especially in this workforce. To make sure I’m doing my part when protecting and promoting women.

What are your earliest memories of falling in love with acting?

As a kid I used to be around loads of people who just loved theatre – that really made a lasting impression on me. So I think I really fell for dramatic acting first,  and film sort of stemmed from that.

Who or what has inspired you the most over your career? 

My mum is a constant inspiration in that way because she’s a yes woman! She’s always like yeah let’s do it! No matter what. that’s something I’ve really carried forward in my career: I’ll do it all why not!

If you had to take some films to a desert island what would you take with you?

That’s a tough one, there’s too many! I really like  The Grifters  and  Cinema Paradiso . Then something to cheer me up, something with Will Ferrell in it!  Talladega Nights !

If you could pick a character in a film to play who would you choose?

It’s already been made into a film but my friend just gave me  The Unbearable Likeness of Being . If it was never made then anyone from that!

Who is your cinematic icon? Your ultimate film muse?

Gena Rowlands. I’d really love to meet her that would be the ultimate goal.

Have you had actors you’ve worked with give really great advice?

Yeah everyone you work with always makes an impression for better or for worse!  (Laughs)  I’ve been really lucky to be able to work with Kevin Costner on  Yellowstone . He’s a team leader and really pushes you to do your best work. I got to read with PTA once which was a highlight of my career. Jeremy Renner, Jon Bernthal, both really incredible actors I was lucky to have as scene partners.

Who would you really love to work with in the future?

I’d really love to work with the director Pedro Almodovar! But I’d have to work on my Spanish…

What’s next for you?

Yellowstone  is airing now and we’ll probably hear about a season 2 soon! And if not I’ll have to find a job!

American actor Kelsey Chow, best known for her parts on "One Tree Hill" (The WB/The CW, 2003-2012), "Pair of Kings" (Disney XD, 2010-13) and the critically-acclaimed 2017 crime drama "Wind River," was born and raised in a multi-racial family (her father was Chinese and her mother American) in Columbia, South Carolina. Chow's interest in acting began at a very young age. She began acting in local community plays throughout her hometown of Columbia, before landing her first TV role at the age of 13 on "One Tree Hill." Chow played Gigi on the series for four years, from 2005 to 2009. After her run on the series ended, Chow nabbed a recurring role as Mikayla on the Disney XD series "Pair of Kings." She played Mikayla on all three seasons of the show. Shortly after "Pair of Kings" ended, Chow began adding film parts to her credit list. She appeared in "Run" and "The Wine of Summer" in 2013, as well as the historical drama "Full of Grace" in 2015. Chow returned to television acting in 2015 when she nabbed a part on "Teen Wolf" (MTV, 2011-17) - a role which she held through 2016. The following year Chow appeared on the Go90 series "Embeds" (2017), as well as in the critically-acclaimed crime drama "Wind River," the latter of which had her working with Oscar-nominated writer/director Taylor Sheridan. Chow worked with Sheridan once again the following year on the TV series "Yellowstone." The series, which also starred Kevin Costner, premiered on the Paramount Network in June of 2018.

• When you're young, you don't think about your career or your future - you perform because you love it.
• One Tree Hill (2003) will always be very, very special to me. It was my first television show. And my first gig in the business. It was surreal. I booked the role when I was 13. I had just started high school, and literally, I think, a week into high school, I found out I got the role. It was unimaginable! I learned so much from that show.
• I've always wanted to work with Sean Connery - there's something about his style, and his calm, cool demeanor that I find intriguing.
• I was really young when I started on One Tree Hill (2003) and the encouragement from my friends and family has been crucial in my development as an actress. I'm also continuously surprised and humbled by the kindness and generosity of the fans.
• My 94-year-old grandmother has always been so inspiring to me. She is kind, smart, brave, and independent. After graduating number one in her medical school class at a time when it was extremely rare for women to attend medical school, she worked with the World Health Organization in North Africa to eradicate tuberculosis.
• I like vintage dresses that I can just slip on.
• I wish I could read minds. It's a dangerous superpower, so I'd wish for it to come with a switch where I could turn it off if I wanted to. You'd learn a lot about people, that's for sure!
• One Tree Hill (2003) was my first television experience, so naturally I was nervous initially. There is no rehearsal, you get your script a few days ahead, and you work. I was also the youngest actor, 13, on set at that time, but it was amazing to be able to 'learn the ropes' with such a supportive group of people.
• Dance and theatre afforded me the opportunity to discover my passion for acting, for telling stories.
• I enjoyed the drama of One Tree Hill (2003) and the opportunity to be one of the comedic aspects, initially.
• Pair of Kings (2010) is so much fun, literally. It is a very physical show with loads of stunts and green screen work, and you never know what great adventure is ahead of you! It's also a nice change in terms of being of similar ages to Larramie Doc Shaw and Mitchel Musso .
• I'm very lucky to have a strong support system with my friends and my family. They have kept me grounded.
• I definitely want to study global health. Right now I'm working on all the prerequisite core curriculum that Columbia has. So getting all of that out of the way. And I definitely want to pursue something along the lines of public health.
• The more you love a person, you more you should respect that person. Encourage her to be the best she can be, and you'll both be happier.
• I love mixing prints. The costume designer for Pair of Kings (2010) and I have actually incorporated the trend for my character 'Mikayla.'
• I enjoy having the ability to play a variety of ethnicities. Being ethnically ambiguous allows me to explore many roles, and I enjoy being free to be whoever I want to be.
• Run (2013) is exciting, about family secrets, the mystery surrounding them and the outdoor sport of parkour. The story itself is full of intrigue and action, but the parkour takes the story to another level. It was an absolutely incredible experience, working with experts from all over the country.
• It's fun to get away from myself for a while when I take on these roles that have very different personalities from my own. I get to say things I normally wouldn't say or act in ways I normally wouldn't act. After all, such roles are more challenging because you really have to immerse yourself in the character.
• I want to do roles that will challenge me. I'm definitely interested in period pieces. But I definitely don't want to limit myself. I'm very open to different roles.
• The Wine of Summer (2013) is a beautiful film about love lost and found, and the complexities of life while discovering who you are. It was filmed primarily in and around Barcelona, and the imagery is breathtaking.
