Abstract. The purpose of this paper is to provide an overview of the concept of change management and its objectives in today’s fast-moving markets. You also can perceive why individuals resist change initially, and it is hard for them to leave the status quo, and shift to a new state. At the end the way of implementing the change management is examined. Keywords: Change, Resistance, Process, and Objective.

This paper identified the most recent focal themes on change management from 2011 to 2016. The fundamental aim of this paper is to identify common themes from a broad range of change management literature as published in peer reviewed international journals. In its content it seeks to provoke thought within the profession in order to better understand current trends, basic principles and dimensions of the change. Ultimately, it is intended to inform practitioner actions and stimulate scholarly debate on the common underlying themes in change management. The approach and design of this paper identified 100 studies on change management from peer reviewed journal publications. The studies identified formed the primary data. These journal articles were searched through the internet, and classified and coded based on: Source of the journal, year of publication, key words, purpose of the study, approach design and methodology, and major findings. The approach and design of this paper iden...

Unger, Cai. "Key Concepts of Organizational Change - A Bibliometric Network Analysis." Thesis, University of South Alabama, 2017. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10643261.

The field of Organizational Change has seen a proliferation of publications of all sorts over the past two decades. In view of the emerging breadth of the field, it is becoming increasingly difficult for practitioners and researchers alike to separate the wheat from the chaff. At the same time, research suggests the majority of Organizational Change efforts are not successful. It is therefore my intent to map the nomological structure of the field of Organizational Change, determine the most dominating concepts, and identify any patterns or trends.

For that purpose I have collected bibliometric data from 1948 to 2016 and conduct a network analysis based on co-occurrence of keywords of Organizational Change.

My network analysis suggests five major findings. First, the field of Organizational Change has reached a level of maturity, which reduces the likelihood of breakthrough innovations. Second, only five concepts are dominating the field of Organizational Change today, which I label the “Top Five”: Change management, leadership, organizational culture, organizational learning, and innovation. Third, we are barking up the wrong tree, which means there is an inherent inconsistency between the topicality of the field, i.e. the dominance of very few topics, and the low success rate of Organizational Change projects. Fourth, it is still unclear how to exactly define and reliably measure change. Finally fifth, there seems to be too much focus on the paradigm that change is always preferably over an equilibrium.

I therefore propose three suggestions for further research. First, look beyond the Top Five concepts and create more dissonant discussion within the field, including a critical review of established paradigms. Second, revisit the established definitions and measurements of change, which includes questioning the widespread assumption that the majority of change efforts are failing. Finally third, conduct a network analysis based on a network of social actors of the field of organizational change, i.e. authors of organizational change.

      Organizational change and game theory were separately investigated over time. Due to lack of scientific research on the relationships of those two fields of knowledge, an investigation of the game theoretic applications in managing change was performed in this research. Game theoretic applications were structured concerning the analytical use of game theory, strategic formulation with game theory and equilibrium analysis. By a qualitative flexible research method, main problematic areas of organizational change were identified with suitable game theoretic applications. Those problem areas are: making cooperation and coalition in change, group dynamic difficulties and the problem of incentive rewards. In each problem area, game theoretic solutions were discussed to help managers to make better decisions. Four mechanisms were inferred to support the game theoretic analysis of change management problems. Those mechanisms are: sub games, practical games, specific modeling and behavioral studies of games. Finally, an instructional framework was developed to conclude findings and illuminate the game theoretic approach in organizational change.

The purpose of the research study was to predict managerial resistance to status quo bias given the presence of dissatisfaction, vision, and a process outlined for change in the environment. According to the 79 participants surveyed in the study, dissatisfaction, vision, and a process outlined for change provided a statistically significant model for predicting manager resistance to status quo bias for the sample studied. Leaders may be able to use the results of the study to determine manager readiness for change. However, at best the study found only 45.3% of the reasons that predict managerial resistance to status quo bias, providing an opportunity for future researchers to validate empirically other factors that may predict manager resistance to status quo bias.

Milam, Ron. "Manager influence on collaborative change initiatives." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2014. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=1566766.

Ensuring all residents in Southern California have access to healthy food is one of many examples of an issue too complex and challenging for any one organization to change on its own. More and more, organizations work in collaboration and designate individuals to manage these collaborative change initiatives. This research uncovers the specific influence managers of collaborative change initiatives have in shaping positive outcomes for the collaborations they serve. Based on interviewing 11 managers and funders from six leading collaborative change initiatives, there are two contextual ways in which managers influence collaboration: their position itself carries influence and their ability to navigate the collaborative context they operate in. The main findings of this research share five key ways in which managers influence the collaborations they serve: their own personal characteristics and skills, the relationships they cultivate, the membership they support and empower, the processes they manage, and the culture they shape.

Higdon, Lora Elizabeth. "Change management for small business leaders." Thesis, Pepperdine University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=10182301.

Small business owners face challenges associated with leading change, and many times lack the necessary resources to manage it properly. The purpose of this descriptive qualitative study was to determine what challenges leaders of small businesses face in managing change, what strategies and practices those leaders employ, and how the leaders of small businesses measure success in managing change. This study also determined what advice leaders of small businesses would suggest for managing change. Four research questions were created to assist with this process, and 13 semi-structured interviews were conducted in various cities throughout the state of Michigan. The participants were small business owners of privately held American companies that had been in business for a minimum of 5 years. Twelve interview questions were asked to answer the 4 research questions. Many themes emerged. Some of the challenges that participants face while managing change are resistance to change, communication issues, lack of confidence, lack of resources, lack of knowledge/experience, absence of strategy, conflicts of interest, and lack of emotional intelligence. The participants shared many different strategies for successful management of change and also offered their lessons learned over the years. The main overall theme presented by all of the participants in this study was the importance of knowledge and experience for management of change in small businesses.

Leaders are frequently required to lead change due to mergers, expansions into new markets, and new initiatives to enter global markets compounding the need for change leadership. Frequent change is more the rule rather than the exception. Change is more needed today yet a poor result from leading change can adversely impact a leader's influence. How does a leader know when to lead a change initiative or when to take the easier route and simply stay with the status quo?

An in depth study of what appeared to be a very risky and highly successful organizational change initiative was thought to possibly shed light on answering these difficult leadership questions. This inductive qualitative case study discovered a university that achieved a successful, sustainable organizational change. The leader overcame the organizational change odds of one-third to two-thirds of the outcomes are often unsuccessful (Beer & Nohria; Bibler; as cited in Gilley, Dixon, & Gilley, 2008). "The rate of failure to deliver sustainable change at times reaches 80–90%" (Cope as cited in Gilley, Dixon, & Gilley, 2008, p. 153).

The leader in the private university organization in the Midwest that led the successful organizational change was inspired by his personal vision. He did not lead change using a theoretical framework. He was successful in persuading the board to authorize implementation of his vision. The president established goals to lead the way for workers to help achieve the organizational change. He effectively communicated his vision and goals and met resistance due to the status quo. The president overcame the challenges of status quo, and the successful organizational change resulted in an effervescent campus environment with record breaking-fundraising. Regardless of the type or size of the major change, organizations that seek to make change may glean insights from this study of how leaders of one organization approached significant change.

Gowdy, Daniel Troyce. "Serving change| Understanding the efficacy of servant leader behaviors to influence follower commitment to organizational change." Thesis, Indiana Wesleyan University, 2016. http://pqdtopen.proquest.com/#viewpdf?dispub=3742928.

Leading successful organizational change is central to an effective leadership approach. Servant leadership with its emphasis on follower growth and development, may be beneficial for organizational change. This study added to the understanding of servant leadership and commitment to organizational change by surveying participants ( n = 244) of a large non-profit specialized healthcare organization implementing an electronic medical records system to assess if perceived servant leader behaviors correlate with followers’ attitude toward change. This study utilized Winston and Fields’ (in press) Essential Servant Leadership Behaviors (ESLB) scale to assess servant leadership’s ability to predict follower commitment to change mindset and interaction time with supervisor as a mediating mechanism. The survey results showed ESLB was found to be a statistically significant but weak positive predictor of affective commitment to change and a statistically significant but weak negative predictor of continuance commitment to change. The results showed evidence that servant leadership behaviors are appropriate for not just maintaining status quo but are also influential during disruptive times of organizational change. No significant relationship was found between ESLB and normative commitment to change. Interaction time with supervisor was not a mediating variable between ESLB and follower commitment to change.

Department of Management and Entrepreneurship

Bachelor thesis, available bachelor thesis topics spring semester 2024.

If you want to write a Bachelor thesis at the Institute of Marketing and Management, Entrepreneurship Department, or are already writing one, you should know about the assignment of topics, design guidelines, the type of supervision, as well as requirements. Therefore, we have compiled tips and information that should make it easier for you to write your thesis.

Preconditions

To apply for a bachelor thesis at our department, students must have completed a ‘proseminar’ (preferably the “Proseminar in Management”).

Application Procedure

If you intend to write a thesis in management or entrepreneurship, take a look at the list of our currently available thesis topics. Read the relevant core literature, if indicated, to find a topic that is of interest to you.

The application window for the bachelor theses for  the Spring Semester 2024  is open from Wednesday , December 20th, 2023 until Friday, February 9th, 2024.

While the topics will only be assigned after the application period has ended, we will inform you within 5 working days of your submission whether you will be able to complete your thesis with our institute or not.

Application Form

The online application form can be found  here .

In your application form you will have to upload as a ZIP file:

  • Your course achievements (Studienblatt) of bachelor studies
  • Evaluation of equivalence of the Strategic Management course and/or Proseminar, if you did not attend these courses at the university of Bern

Spectrum of theses

Each year, the Department of Management oversees about 25-30 bachelor and master theses dealing with management or entrepreneurship matters. Literature studies about scientifically relevant topics, as well as empirical studies, and 'consulting–papers' relevant to practitioners can be composed. The institute proposes a list of topics. In agreement with the department, the treatment of one's own topic is also possible.

We encourage teamwork!

What selection criteria do you have?

Our selection criteria vary from semester to semester depending on the number of applicants, as well as on their individual track-record(s). Generally, we give preference to the students of higher semesters who have completed the courses “Proseminar in Management” and “Strategic Management”.

Do you assign topics on the first come – first serve basis?

No. The exact time of the application is not considered. The assignment of the topics is carried out after the application period ends.

Can I apply for a bachelor thesis at your Department if I have not attended “Proseminar in Management” or “Strategic Management” (yet)?

Yes. We invite students to apply even if they do not have all prerequisites. See also the question on selection criteria.

Can I attend “Proseminar in Management” and/or “Strategic Management” parallel to writing my bachelor thesis?

Yes. However, your chances of getting accepted for writing a bachelor thesis at our department are higher if you have already attended both courses. Also, if you are accepted your chances of succeeding are higher if you have already attended the “Proseminar in Management” and the course “Strategic Management”.

Can I offer my own topic?

Yes. In addition to your regular application (Application form plus uploads) you have to submit a short proposal of two pages where you present your topic, your motivation and at least five relevant literature references (as an orientation: see the description of writing a proposal in the guidelines on top of this site). You may put this short proposal into your ZIP file together with the other demanded attachments and upload it in the application form. Please note that we do not guarantee acceptance of your own topic and generally supervise theses, which lie within our own research interests.

If you're interested in working on a thesis related to our research topics, please don't hesitate to get in touch with us.

Julia Nentwich supervises theses on thematic areas of gender, diversity and change. Topics and questions can be found in the context of her current research or developed from own ideas.

1. Scheduling a meeting with Julia Nentwich on "setmore" expand_less

As soon as I have agreed to supervise your thesis, you can schedule appointments in my meeting hour using the "setmore" platform. To do this, simply select a 15-minutes time slot on the platform using this link:

https://julianentwich.setmore.com/

Make sure to choose "Sprechstunde" and "Julia Nentwich" and reserve an available appointment. At the agreed time, I will call you on MS Teams. If all the available appointments are booked, you can select "Julia Nentwich Additional Time" to schedule more time.

2. Supervision process expand_less

  • If you need supervision, please send me an email with your initial ideas for the topic. If your topic aligns with my area of expertise, I will suggest booking an appointment in my meeting hours (see point 1).
  • After our first meeting, you will need to write a 1-3 page outline that includes your research question, objective, and an overview of your topic. We will discuss this outline at our second meeting.
  • If you have any questions, you can always book an appointment to discuss them with me during my meeting hours. For empirical projects, we will usually discuss data generation and analysis separately.
  • Two weeks before your official deadline, you will need to give a short presentation of your thesis (management students). This presentation is not graded, but the feedback you receive will be incorporated into your final thesis (see point 3).
  • After your paper has been graded, please feel free to send me a short note. I will be happy to provide you with valuable feedback in return. We can also schedule a meeting to discuss this feedback in person.

It is important to remember that with empirical work, it is impossible to provide a ready-made outline at the beginning. We can decide on the topic and theoretical direction, but the center of the work can only be determined after the empirical analysis.

3. Presentation (Bachelor Thesis in Business Administration) expand_less

For Bachelor thesis in BWL an oral presentation is obligatory. For more details, please refer to the directives of the Secretary of Studies (Art. 5.17, 5.18) dated August 1, 2023 and the FAQ of the Bachelor BWL . The following applies to the work I supervise:

  • Students register for a presentation appointment using this form . Presentation appointments always take place about two weeks before a submission deadline.
  • Each paper is scheduled for 20 minutes of presentation, discussion, and feedback. Please prepare a maximum of 5 slides for this purpose and bring them printed out as a handout. Briefly outline the research question, procedure and design, results and your contribution to the research. You will receive feedback from all participants and are expected to attend all presentations scheduled for this meeting and also provide feedback to others.
  • The presentation will not be graded, the feedback received here will be included in the final version of the thesis.

4. An empirical study or a literature review? expand_less

When working on a research project, you can choose to approach it empirically or through a literature review. However, if you opt for an empirical approach, it is important that you have prior knowledge of qualitative research methods. It is also mandatory to include a methodological chapter, which outlines the chosen method and procedure, the assumptions of scientific theory, and how the general procedure was applied to the research question and material collection. If you're conducting empirical research, it is crucial to ensure anonymity, especially when conducting interviews with experts. This means that you should handle the recording of the interview and transcripts with care, and make sure that they don't travel on various data carriers. It is recommended to store such data on an external hard disk or similar device at the workplace. To maintain anonymity, it is mandatory to use pseudonyms for the interviewees in your thesis, and to describe the sample in a way that people are not clearly identifiable. For example, instead of mentioning the company name, only the industry can be mentioned, and for the person, only the function description can be given. However, if the company name is mentioned, it is not possible to name the persons with function descriptions. If maintaining anonymity is difficult, the work can be classified as confidential. In this case, it will not be freely available in the library catalogue, and may only be shared with third parties with the supervisor and author's consent. It is important to note that interview transcripts should not be added to the appendix of your thesis. Rather, the results section should be written in a way that original quotations from the material sufficiently document which statements were made. However, to examine the material more closely, it is mandatory to submit the interviews and transcripts via file transfer to your supervisor.

5. Scope and typical structure of a paper expand_less

In addition to the official fact sheets, there are some recommendations that can help you write your paper effectively. The scope and structure of the paper may vary depending on the program you are in. You can find the currently applicable regulations in the program regulations, and an overview is also provided in the directives of the Secretary of Studies (pages 36-38).

6. Inclusive language expand_less

It is essential that the language used in work is free from discrimination. The HSG language guidelines state that using language that perpetuates inequality based on factors such as age, skin color, gender, language, national or social origin is discriminatory. Additionally, citation styles like APA style have regulations on the use of non-discriminatory language.

“Our language guidelines prioritize treating everyone fairly and using inclusive language in both words and imagery. When we communicate, we aim to address all groups respectfully, present information in an unbiased manner, and depict individuals and groups without relying on stereotypes.” (translated from German, HSG Language Guide)

7. Literature management expand_less

Managing the literature during a bachelor's thesis is crucial, and using specialized software can be very helpful. It not only ensures that the correct citation style is applied while writing, but also helps with organizing and archiving literature research. Additionally, summaries can be efficiently stored while reading. I recommend using Zotero , which is a reliable and free solution for literature management.

Bachelor Thesis : optimization program to manage the changing of nurses shifts in a hospital

This thesis is based on an International Competition happend between 2014 and 2015, in which it was requested to design a system that would optimize the scheduling of shifts within a hospital.

So, given* N *nurses and M weeks, the goal is to obtain the nurses's timetable within the selected period, in order to satisfy most of the constraints imposed on the optimization problem.

This type of problem was modeled as an Integer Linear Programming Problem, in which all integer variables and mostly binary ones were used.

It was also created a web application, which makes the program available to users.

Experiments have also been made to analyze the functionality of the model created which show that it is a very good model because it always finds a feasible solution.

The model was written in Python, using as optimization software Gurobi.

  • Constants.py : contains the constants of the program;
  • Preprocessing.py : file that prepare some historical data for use;
  • Random_Data.py : contains randomly generated data;
  • Model.py : contains the implementation of the model, with all the binary variables and the hard and soft constraints;
  • Read_Data.py : contains functions that transform the actual competition data format into a format created for the program;
  • Real_Exp.py : experiments made to analyze the model created. The percentage gap and che calculation time of the solution were measured by setting a maximum time of 1 hour.

The Interface

It is not just an interface but it's a real web application, with a front end part and a back end part. It was created using the framework Django.

Main files:

  • models.py ;
  • serializers.py ;

Experiments

Changing the number of nurses and the period from 4 to 8 weeks, were misureted the percentage gap and the calculation time of the solution imposing 1h as the maximum time.
