The idea of the channel is to tell outlandish stories that occur to teenage characters. They involve school, family secrets, and other real world topics, however they usually have an unusual twist to them.

My Story Animated provides examples of:

  • Alpha Bitch : You can know for a fact the worst bully in a school is always the popular kid.
  • Ambiguous Situation : The video "i had no idea his trick could work" sees its narrator, Dana, get jealous and suspicious when her boyfriend Damien spends a lot of time at her friend Jackie's house and refuses to let her see their text conversations. While Damien insists that they were just working on a surprise gift for her, she later sees them kissing in her room. Dana herself admits that she's not sure if her jealousy was justified after all or if it drove Damien into Jackie's arms .
  • Animesque : Several videos are varying degrees of animesque and use anime-inspired expressions.
  • "I Wouldn't Have Known This if i didn't lose my v card" ends with Bamba and her lover Matt having had a baby (presumably through artificial insemination, since she didn't lose her allergy to physical contact with other humans until after she got pregnant).
  • "I didn't know what music was until I was 17" ends with the narrator, now married to her longtime boyfriend, expecting a baby.
  • The Baby Trap : Dana from "i had no idea his trick could work" is suspicious that her boyfriend Damien might be cheating on her with her best friend Jackie. So she secretly replaces some of her birth control pills with mints. Not only does she get pregnant, but so does her mom, who unknowingly took her daughter's birth control pills in a moment of carelessness.
  • Halle from "My Dad Passed Out When He Saw Who I Am Dating" falls in love with the bodyguard her father hired to keep an eye on her. She tries to have a relationship with him, but it doesn't work out that way.
  • Both Sides Have a Point : In "My Dad Found Out What I Did In School’s Lab At Night", the narrator and her father get into a fight when the latter admits to being the one sending the former the notes saying he knew what she did. The narrator's dad is right when he tells his daughter she should have confessed, but the narrator is also right when she points out that leaving those anonymous notes was really messed-up.
  • Bruiser with a Soft Center : Hunter from "i found her after 20 years" is a large, muscular guy who's not above getting violent when sufficiently angered... but also kindhearted and protective by nature.
  • The Cameo : Some of the more recent episodes have characters who appeared in a previous episode act as background characters.
  • Declaration of Protection : Hunter from "i found her after 20 years" solemnly promises to protect Lisa.
  • In the now-private video "I didn't know what music was until I was 17", the narrator goes through a lot of terrible things due to being a free spirit living in a compound of religious fundamentalists. But eventually, she manages to build a new life away from the compound with her family and becomes a successful comic artist.
  • Entertainingly Wrong : Callie from "I Found out what my grandma do in her secret room, she made $$$" sees her grandmother spending time alone with a man named Gerald while all dressed up and assumes he's her lover, an assumption that seems to be confirmed when she checks her phone and sees him listed in her contacts as "#1 Man". It turned out the man was actually her manager ("#1 Man" was short for #1 Manager), but it's not hard to understand why she thought so.
  • Fatal Flaw : Dana from "i had no idea his trick could work" is very prone to jealousy , and at one point yells at her boyfriend Damien over something that happened in one of her dreams. Her jealousy eventually causes her to become a single mother.
  • Fun with Acronyms : Bamba and Matt from "I Wouldn't Have Known This if i didn't lose my v card" start a pseudo-cult called "Summon the Darkness" to explain why they're showing up to school in weird latex costumes. And yes, the fact that it stands for "STD" is completely intentional in-universe.
  • Girls with Moustaches : "I Wear A Mask To School To Hide What My Father Did To Me" is about a teenage girl who has facial hair due to polycystic ovary syndrome (PCOS).
  • A God I Am Not : Prisha from "people $$$ to see my face | my strange job" is treated like a goddess by the people of her village... and hates it, in large part due to the heavy duties and lack of freedom it means for her. She tries to tell one of her worshippers that she's not a goddess in private, but he insists she is.
  • Handsome Lech : "Brian/Mark" (his real name is never established) from "it was all a lie". While he's certainly good-looking and can be charming when it suits him, he turns out to be a complete scumbag in the bedroom (focusing solely on his own pleasure, doing things that hurt his bedmates, etc.), much to narrator Sarah's displeasure.
  • Hate Sink : In a majority of the stories, there are characters who are bullies and obnoxious brats who try to make the narrators’ lives miserable.
  • Mama Bear : In "We Got Married But We Never Met", Mia goes considerable lengths to save her son after he gets kidnapped.
  • Mind Screw : In "i had no idea they could do that", just about everything presented is... ambiguous and inconsistent, to put it mildly.
  • Miss Conception : Felicia from "I Got Preg-nant From Swimming with My Friends" is a sheltered girl with some prudish parents, and as such has only a vague idea of how babies are made. When she doesn't have her period after she makes out with Miles at a pool party, she thinks he got her pregnant... even though the most they did was French kiss.
  • Monica from "I found out why my mother keeps losing her underwear" assumes her friend John is gay. But it's later revealed that he just Likes Older Women .
  • Mistaken for Pregnant : In "I Got Preg-nant From Swimming with My Friends", Felicia thinks she got knocked up by Miles. But it turns out that her symptoms were actually caused by an ovarian cyst.
  • Mukokuseki : One now-deleted video called "My biological parents traded me for two pigs" takes place in China and has an all-Chinese cast, but everyone is depicted in this style.
  • Münchausen Syndrome : "Mom Made Me Have the worst diseases To Become Rich" is about an example of Munchausen Syndrome by Proxy. Laurie's mother deliberately causes her to have some very serious health problems for money and attention.
  • The narrator of "I Stole A Lipstick, I Ended Up Being Pregnant!" manages to hide her pregnancy from her parents by doing charity work in a foreign country and giving her baby up for adoption after giving birth there.
  • Narcissist : Helen's father in "I Work In Cleaning Bathrooms While My Dad Is A Millionaire" is diagnosed with Narcissistic Personality Disorder by a psychiatrist. Considering he kept his wife and daughter in poverty while not telling them he was a successful businessman for no reason other than wanting to indulge in his money fixation to the fullest, this is hardly surprising.
  • "I Am In Complex Relationship, We Are 4" may sound like it's a story about polyamory , when in fact, it's about both halves of a couple playing Operation: Jealousy with Invented Individuals .
  • Run for the Border : The now-deleted video "I Woke Up In A Moving Van Heading To Mexico" is about a girl whose father tries to flee to Mexico with her and her sister.
  • Self-Made Man : Hunter from "i found her after 20 years" manages to get rich by founding his own company.
  • In the now-private video "Mom Saw My date in school", it's revealed that the main character's mother doesn't like her boyfriend because his mother is a rival pro wrestler who she blames for ruining her career.
  • In "My BFF Left Me A Letter After She Died", Lily gets picked on by other students due to her mother being a very strict teacher.
  • One now-private video titled "I Only Date Blind People because i am too pretty" is about a young woman whose beauty causes her serious problems: people being jealous of her, people only being interested in her for her appearance, and even people becoming creepily obsessed with her.
  • Stalker with a Crush : Ben from "I Got Stuck Inside My Crush Locker, I Saw Everything" is revealed to have been stalking Sam, the narrator.
  • Stockholm Syndrome : Sam from "I Got Stuck Inside My Crush Locker, I Saw Everything" starts developing this after being held captive by her stalker Ben for some time.
  • Swirlie : "my bff locked me in the bath with my crush" has Kara and Alicia getting revenge on Blake for spreading malicious rumors about the former by doing this to him.
  • Tagline : "Real Stories Animated".
  • Taking the Veil : Mary from "i found my disowned sister, her story is heartbreaking" was forced to enter a convent by her parents because she'd gotten pregnant as a teenager.
  • Talking in Your Sleep : Katie from "I Found My Pictures On My Creepy Roommate’s Phone" has a habit of doing this. Her tendencies both amuse and annoy her roommate Regina, the narrator.
  • Teen Genius : Penelope from "I Took Revenge By Becoming Their Lawyer" graduated from a special science school at the age of 14.
  • Theme Twin Naming : Luna and Juna from "A Kiss Uncovered a 20 Year Old Secret" are twin sisters with very similar names.
  • Through the Eyes of Madness : It's really hard to tell what the truth of... well, just about anything in the video "i had no idea they could do that" is, owing to the narrator's severe schizophrenia.
  • Visual Pun : After Felicia from "I Got Preg-nant From Swimming with My Friends" describes her mom as a "crazy old bat", said woman is briefly shown as a bat-human hybrid.
  • Wham Line : Bamba from "I Wouldn't Have Known This if i didn't lose my v card" spends most of the story thinking her rash was caused by an STD given to her by a boy named Matt. Later on, she gives CPR to an old woman and is afraid she might have somehow spread it to her. But a doctor at the hospital reassures her: "Relax, dear. An allergy to human touch is not contagious."
  • What Does She See in Him? : Hunter from "i found her after 20 years" admits he has no clue what Lisa sees in her boyfriend Kent. Since Kent is an emotionally abusive parasite who cheats on her, his views on her relationship are entirely justified.
  • Witch with a Capital "B" : In the more recent stories from the 2020's, the most common insult targeted towards a girl's Arch-Enemy is "witch".
  • You Dirty Rat! : While Anna's pet rats in "my stepmom kicked me out of the house" aren't actually examples of the trope, she exploits their reputation to get revenge on her father and stepmother by driving them out of their house.

Essay on Animation

Students are often asked to write an essay on Animation in their schools and colleges. And if you’re also looking for the same, we have created 100-word, 250-word, and 500-word essays on the topic.

Let’s take a look…

100 Words Essay on Animation

What is animation.

Animation is a way of making pictures move. This is done by creating a series of pictures, each one slightly different from the last. When these pictures are shown quickly, one after the other, they create the illusion of movement. This is how cartoons are made.

Types of Animation

There are many types of animation. Traditional animation uses hand-drawn pictures. Stop-motion animation uses real objects and moves them a little bit at a time. Computer animation uses software to create images. Each type has its own unique look and feel.

Uses of Animation

Animation is used in many places. You can see it in movies, TV shows, and video games. It’s also used in advertisements and websites. Animation can tell stories, explain ideas, or just make things look fun and exciting.

Creating Animation

Making animation is a lot of work. It takes a team of people to create the pictures, add the voices, and put it all together. But the result is worth it: a moving, talking picture that can entertain, inform, or inspire.

The Future of Animation

Animation is always changing. New tools and techniques are being developed all the time. This means that the animations of the future will be even more amazing than the ones we have today. Who knows what exciting things are in store?

250 Words Essay on Animation

Animation is a method of making pictures move. This is done by creating a series of drawings or images, then showing them quickly one after the other. It’s like a fast flipbook. The quick movement tricks our eyes into thinking the pictures are moving on their own.

There are different types of animation. Traditional animation involves drawing each frame by hand. This is how the first animated movies were made. Stop-motion animation uses real objects and moves them bit by bit. Each small movement is photographed and then put together to make a film. Computer animation uses computers to create images and make them move. This is the most common type of animation today.

Animation is used in many places. It’s used in movies and TV shows to tell stories that would be hard to tell with real actors. It’s also used in video games to make the characters and world come alive. Sometimes, animation is used in ads to grab people’s attention and make the ad more fun to watch.

Creating animation is a lot of work. It involves coming up with a story, designing characters, and then making those characters move. Animators need to understand how things move in real life so they can make their animations look believable. They also need to be good at drawing or using computer programs.

Animation is a fun and creative way to tell stories. It can bring things to life in ways that live action can’t. It’s a powerful tool for storytellers and artists.

500 Words Essay on Animation

Animation is the process of making pictures or images look like they are moving. This is done by creating a series of pictures, each one slightly different from the last. When these pictures are shown quickly, one after the other, it looks like the things in the pictures are moving. It’s a fun and creative way to tell stories and make characters come to life.

There are many different types of animation. Traditional animation, also known as hand-drawn animation, involves drawing each frame by hand. This type of animation was used in many old cartoons.

Another type is stop-motion animation. This involves taking a picture of an object, moving the object a tiny bit, and then taking another picture. This process is repeated many times. When the pictures are shown quickly, it looks like the object is moving.

Computer animation is a newer type. This involves using computers to create images and characters. There are two main types of computer animation: 2D and 3D. 2D computer animation is similar to hand-drawn animation, but done on a computer. 3D computer animation creates characters and scenes that look like they have depth and exist in a real, three-dimensional space.

How is Animation Made?

Creating animation is a long process. First, a story is written and a script is created. Then, artists create sketches of the characters and scenes. These sketches are used to create a storyboard, which is like a comic strip of the animation.

Next, the images are created. This could be done by hand, on a computer, or using stop-motion. Each image is slightly different from the last, to create the illusion of movement. Sound effects and voices are added to bring the characters to life.

Finally, all the images are put together, in order, to create the final animation. This is often done on a computer. The animation is then ready to be shown on TV, in a movie theater, or online.

The Importance of Animation

Animation is important for many reasons. It allows us to tell stories in a unique and creative way. It can make complex ideas easier to understand, which is why it’s often used in educational videos.

Animation also allows us to create worlds and characters that couldn’t exist in real life. This can spark our imagination and inspire us to be more creative. It’s a powerful tool for storytelling and a fun way for people of all ages to express their ideas and creativity.

In conclusion, animation is a fascinating and versatile form of art. It’s a process that requires a lot of patience and skill, but the end result can be truly magical. Whether it’s a cartoon on TV, a movie in the cinema, or an educational video on the internet, animation brings stories to life in a way that no other medium can.

That’s it! I hope the essay helped you.

Cannes 2024 Sales: Netflix Spends Big on ‘Emilia Pérez' and Glen Powell Package ‘Monsanto'

A s Cannes nears its end, some major contenders have already found homes, while many more buzzy titles with Palme d’Or aspirations are awaiting buyers. This year’s market hasn’t been weighed down by the writers or actors strikes in the same way as last year, meaning companies like A24, Neon, Apple, and more have jumped in on exciting packages of possibly future contenders.

Below we’re tracking everything that gets bought throughout the festival and beyond.

Films Acquired During the Festival

“emilia pérez”.

Section:  In Competition

Director: Jacques Audiard

Buyer:  Netflix

Date Acquired : May 23

Cast : Zoe Saldana, Selena Gomez, Karla Sofia Gascon

Buzz: Could Netflix have a Palme d’Or winner on its hands? Variety first reported that Netflix is nearing a deal for the Jacques Audiard film that’s earned raves and had the starriest cast out of the competition lineup. But Netflix reportedly only picked up U.S. and UK rights along with some other territories rather than the world for $12 million. Netflix had no comment. The acquisition along with the earlier “Monsanto” news would be a big stake in the ground for Netflix’s new film chief Dan Lin.

Section:  Package

Director: John Lee Hancock

Cast : Glen Powell, Laura Dern, Anthony Mackie

Buzz: One of the biggest splashes out of Cannes so far is Netflix taking a worldwide deal on one of the hotter packages on the market, the legal drama “Monsanto” based on a true story of an upstart lawyer taking on the American chemical giant over whether the weed killer Roundup was safe. Michael Wisner, Alexandra Duparc, Ned Benson, and John Lee Hancock wrote the script. The project reunites Netflix with Powell ahead of him starring in “Hit Man” from Richard Linklater. Deadline reported that Netflix acquired the film for roughly $34 million, just a little shy of what Apple also reportedly spent on “Tenzing.”

Section:  Un Certain Regard

Director: Gints Zilbalodis

Buyer:  Sideshow and Janus Films

Date Acquired : May 22

Buzz: Sideshow and Janus Films wasted no time in making yet another splash in Un Certain Regard (their second acquisition) after the animated apocalyptic cat movie “Flow” received a standing ovation after its premiere earlier in the day. “Flow” is already scheduled to play next at Annecy next month, and the distributors are planning a theatrical release.

“The Kingdom”

Director: Julien Colonna

Buyer:  Metrograph Pictures

Date Acquired : May 21

Cast:  Ghjuvanna Benedetti

Buzz: Metrograph’s second acquisition out of Cannes also came from Un Certain Regard, and this time the distributor picked up a very commercial mob thriller from the debut filmmaker Colonna. IndieWire’s review called it an “intense coming-of-age crime saga” and compared it to the 1980 crime classic “The Long Good Friday.” Metrograph is planning a theatrical release and will announce plans at a later date.

“The Death of Robin Hood”

Director: Michael Sarnoski

Buyer:  A24

Cast:  Hugh Jackman, Jodie Comer

Buzz: One of the hottest packages to hit the Cannes market, A24 beat out other buyers for the U.S. rights in a competitive situation for this new take on Robin Hood. The official synopsis reads: “Grappling with his past after a life of crime and murder, an aging Robin Hood finds himself gravely injured after a battle he thought would be his last. In the hands of a mysterious woman, he is offered a chance at salvation.” Production is expected to begin February 2025 with A24 planning a theatrical release. Lyrical Media is fully financing the film.

“Sentimental Value”

Director: Joachim Trier

Buyer:  Neon

Cast:  Renate Reinsve

Buzz: Neon is reuniting with the director and star of its Cannes hit “The Worst Person in the World” for their next film “Sentimental Value,” which is a family drama that Neon will release theatrically in 2025. Trier co-wrote the screenplay with Eskil Vogt. Principal photography will begin in August in Norway and France.

“Soundtrack to a Coup D’Etat”

Section:  Completed Film

Director: Johan Grimonprez

Buyer:  Kino Lorber, with Kanopy

Buzz: This documentary first premiered at Sundance and won the World Cinema Documentary Special Jury Prize. The film is an essay film blending jazz and politics while examining the assassination of Congolese leader Patrice Lumumba. It will be released theatrically this fall followed by a home video and educational release from Kanopy.

Director: Sandhya Suri

Date Acquired : May 20

Cast:  Shahana Goswami, Sunita Rajwar

Buzz: Indian filmmaker Sandhya Suri, who previously won the World Documentary Grand Jury Prize at Sundance for “I For India,” made her narrative-feature directorial debut on this police procedural about a widow who inherits her husband’s job as a police constable and is brought under the wing of a feminist inspector to investigate the murder of a girl. IndieWire’s review called it a “master class of subtlety” and a no-frills thriller. A theatrical release is being planned, but there’s no release date yet.

“All We Imagine as Light”

Director: Payal Kapadia

Cast:  Kani Kusruti, Divya Prabha, Chhaya Kadam, Hridhu Haroon, Azees Nedumangad

Buzz: “All We Imagine As Light,” the first film in 30 years to play in competition from India, was acquired by Sideshow and Janus Films ahead of its premiere on Thursday. After previously nabbing “Drive My Car” and “EO,” Sideshow and Janus picked up rights for North America to the Indian drama and are planning a theatrical release. The film is set in Mumbai and follows a nurse who becomes troubled when she receives a gift from her estranged husband. Kapadia, just one of four women competing for the Palme this year, previously directed the 2021 documentary “A Night of Knowing Nothing” that played in Director’s Fortnight. Check out the trailer for “All We Imagine As Light” here .

“The Entertainment System Is Down”

Director: Ruben Östlund

Date Acquired : May 19

Cast:  Keanu Reeves, Kirsten Dunst, Nicholas Braun, Daniel Brühl, Samantha Morton

Buzz: Two years after winning his second Palme d’Or for “Triangle of Sadness,” Ruben Östlund returned to Cannes with one of the hottest packages for sale at the festival. His latest project, “The Entertainment System Is Down,” appears to be another satire of opulent living in the vein of “Triangle of Sadness.” The film follows a group of passengers on a lengthy flight who react in horror after finding out that the entertainment system has crashed. IndieWire can confirm that A24 acquired the rights to the film after a competitive bidding war at Cannes.

“The Girl With the Needle”

Director: Magnus von Horn

Buyer:  Mubi

Cast:  Vic Carmen Sonne, Trine Dyrholm

Buzz: Mubi’s second acquisition of a competition title (it has a third with UK rights for Andrea Arnold’s “Bird”) this time came in the form of the chilling, black and white true story about a Danish serial killer. IndieWire’s B+ review called it “handsome and captivating” with a “rug-pull” moment of a twist.

“The Seed of the Sacred Fig”

Director: Mohammad Rasoulof

Date Acquired : May 18

Cast:  Setareh Abdolmaleki, Zahra Rostami, Amineh Mazroei Arani

Buzz: The international film community watched in horror this month as Mohammad Rasoulof, who has faced years of legal harassment from Iranian authorities over his provocative filmmaking, was sentenced to eight years in prison and a flogging just days before his new film was slated to premiere at Cannes. He eventually escaped Iran and plans to come to Cannes with his latest film, which offers his perspective on the country’s oppressive legal system. The film’s topicality could make it a major player in the Palme d’Or race when it premieres on Friday.

“The Monkey”

Section:  Post-Production

Director:  Osgood Perkins

Cast:  Theo James, Tatiana Maslany, Elijah Wood

Buzz: In yet another pre-sale for Neon, the distributor bought the next film from director Osgood Perkins (“Longlegs”) after already launching sales on another film from Perkins at the Cannes market, “Keeper.” “The Monkey” is a horror film adaptation of a Stephen King short story from 1980. Production wrapped in March, and the film will be released theatrically in 2025.

“The Unknown”

Director:  Arthur Harari

Date Acquired : May 17

Cast:  Léa Seydoux

Buzz: It’s no surprise Neon would want a reunion with Harari, the co-writer of last year’s Palme winner “Anatomy of a Fall.” But a team-up with Seydoux is even more exciting, even if plot details are still as unknown as the film’s title. Harari is writing and directing the feature, his first feature since 2021’s “Onoda: 10,000 Nights in the Jungle,” and Neon is already eyeing a 2026 theatrical release for the film.

“Memoir of a Snail”

Section:  Completed Market Title

Director:  Adam Elliott

Buyer:  IFC Films

Date Acquired : May 16

Cast:  Sarah Snook, Jacki Weaver, Eric Bana, Kodi Smit-McPhee

Buzz: “Memoir of a Snail” is just the second stop-motion animated feature from the director of the acclaimed “Mary and Max,” and it’s also the first animated voice role for “Succession” star Sarah Snook. The film is about a lonely misfit girl who falls into anxiety and depression when she’s separated from her twin brother.

Director:  Jennifer Peedom

Buyer:  Apple

Date Acquired : May 14

Cast:  Tom Hiddleston, Willem Dafoe

Buzz: The first competitive deal out of the Cannes market was a worldwide buy from Apple for this Mt. Everest thriller about the true story of Sherpa Tenzing Norgay from Tibet, who in 1953 after six failed attempts became the first person to summit Mt. Everest alongside New Zealander Edmund Hillary (Hiddleston). Casting is underway for the role of Tenzing. Luke Davies (“Lion,” “Beautiful Boy”) wrote the script, and Peedom, known for her mountaineering documentaries “Sherpa” and “Solo,” has a close relationship with the Tenzing family and Sherpa community.

Director:  Julia Ducournau

Cast:  Golshifteh Farahani, Tahar Rahim

Buzz:  Described as another “genre-defying” film in a reunion between the “Titane” director and Neon, Julia Ducournau’s next feature “Alpha” will begin shooting this fall and was one of IndieWire’s hot package titles heading into the Marché du Film. Charades and FilmNation Entertainment are selling the movie for the rest of the world.

Films Acquired Before the Festival

“the substance”.

Director:  Coralie Fargaet

Buyer:  MUBI

Date Acquired : May 8

Cast:  Margaret Qualley, Dennis Quaid, Demi Moore

Buzz:  Just one of four films playing for the Palme coming from a female director in 2024, “The Substance” is a body horror film from the director of “Revenge” with an elusive premise about a revolutionary new product designed to make a “younger, more beautiful, more perfect” you. “What could possibly go wrong,” the synopsis reads.

“Parthenope”

Director:  Paolo Sorrentino

Date Acquired : May 3

Cast:  Gary Oldman

Buzz:  A24 didn’t wait to jump into the Palme d’Or race, acquiring what will be Sorrentino’s seventh film in competition over a week before its festival premiere . The film stars Gary Oldman and was shot in Capri and Naples with Sorrentino’s “Hand of God” cinematographer Daria D’antonio.

Films Arriving with Distribution

Director:  Sean Baker

Distributor:  Neon

Cast:  Mikey Madison, Ivy Wolk

Buzz:  Described only as a story about a sex worker that’s also an adventure rom-com , Baker’s eighth feature was shot on 35mm and is his second to compete for the Palme after 2021’s “Red Rocket.”

“Kinds of Kindness”

Director:  Yorgos Lanthimos

Distributor:  Searchlight Pictures

Cast:  Emma Stone, Jesse Plemons, Willem Dafoe, Margaret Qualley, Hong Chau, Joe Alwyn, Mamoudou Athie, Hunter Schafer

Release Plans : June 21, 2024

Buzz:  Fresh off winning Emma Stone her second Oscar, Lanthimos’ triptych anthology film , previously titled “AND,” is a welcome return for the director to a contemporary setting.

“On Becoming a Guinea Fowl”

Director:  Rungano Nyoni

Distributor:  A24

Cast:  Henry B.J. Phiri

Buzz:  Filmed in Zambia with the backing of A24, BAFTA winner Rungano Nyoni is returning to Cannes for just her second feature after she competed for the Golden Camera in 2017 for her debut “I Am Not a Witch.”

“Universal Language”

Section:  Director’s Fortnight

Director:  Matthew Rankin

Distributor:  Oscilloscope

Buzz: The director of 2019’s “The Twentieth Century” returns with this surreal comedy of intertwining stories across Winnipeg, in which he directs, writes, and this time around even stars. Oscilloscope’s head of acquisitions Aaron Katz tells IndieWire the film is “weird and kooky,” and like an Iranian movie that was actually made in Canada, and thus an homage to Iranian cinema and its auteurs. It also reunites O-Scope with Rankin and pairs him with a producer who is a Cannes veteran and Xavier Dolan collaborator.

“ E rnest Cole: Lost and Found”

Section:  Special Screenings

Director:  Raoul Peck

Distributor:  Magnolia Pictures

Cast:  LaKeith Stanfield, as the voice of Ernest Cole

Synopsis:  Magnolia picked up Raoul Peck’s (“I Am Not Your Negro”) latest documentary about the Black freelance photographer Ernest Cole as a package back at least year’s Cannes and are premiering it finally this year. The film explores how Cole fled South Africa in 1966 and found exile in the U.S. to become a seminal figure in photographing New York City and the American South, leading him to publish his book “House of Bondage.” It also uncovers 60,000 of his 35mm film negatives previously thought to be lost.

Section:  Out of Competition

Director:  Guy Maddin, Galen Johnson, Evan Johnson

Distributor:  Bleecker Street

Cast:  Alicia Vikander, Cate Blanchett

Buzz: Executive producer Ari Aster described Maddin’s “Rumours” - incredibly, the eccentric Canadian filmmaker’s first formal trip to Cannes - as “ stoopid, hilarious, and wonderful. ” Let’s just say it’s better suited for the Croisette than TIFF.

“Horizon: An American Saga”

Director:  Kevin Costner

Distributor:  Warner Bros. Pictures

Cast:  Kevin Costner, Sienna Miller, Sam Worthington, Michael Angarano, Jena Malone, Dale Dickey

Release Plans: June 28, 2024

Buzz: It’s been 20 years since Costner was last in Cannes, and he’s returning with his long-gestating Western passion project. Each of the two films set for release this summer will screen at the festival.

“Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga”

Director:  George Miller

Release Plans: May 24, 2024

Cast:  Anya Taylor-Joy, Chris Hemsworth

Buzz: We would’ve loved to see George Miller in competition with “ Furiosa ,” but we’re happy to see some vehicular carnage on the Croisette regardless. The early hype for the movie is ecstatic .

Director:  India Donaldson

Distributor:  Metrograph Pictures

Cast:  Lily Colias

Buzz: This family drama and coming-of-age story set amid a forest backpacking trip first premiered in competition at Sundance earlier this year. IndieWire had the exclusive first-look at the trailer released ahead of its Cannes debut.

“Ghost Cat Anzu”

Director:  Yôko Kuno and Nobuhiro Yamashita

Distributor:  GKIDS

Buzz: This Japanese anime first screened as a work-in-progress at last year’s Annecy Film Festival and tells the story of an 11-year-old girl sent to live with her grandfather, a monk who asks his ghost cat to watch over her.

Pixar Lays Off 175 Workers as It Returns Its Focus to Films

The animation studio, which has struggled over the past few years, will stop making original shows for Disney+.

Reporting from Los Angeles

Pixar will stop making original shows for Disney+ as part of a broader retrenchment, resulting in layoffs that will reduce its work force by 14 percent.

Jim Morris, the president of Pixar, announced the layoffs in an internal memo on Tuesday that was viewed by The New York Times. He cited “the return to our focus on feature films.” About 175 employees will be let go.

Questions about Pixar’s health have swirled in Hollywood and among investors since June 2022, when the Disney-owned studio released “ Lightyear ” to disastrous results. How could Pixar, the gold standard of animation studios for nearly three decades, have gotten a movie so wrong — especially one about Buzz Lightyear, a bedrock “Toy Story” character?

Pixar’s next film, “Elemental,” an opposites-attract love story, arrived to alarmingly low ticket sales in June 2023, but ultimately generated a solid $500 million at the box office.

One problem: Disney had weakened the Pixar brand by using its films to build the Disney+ streaming service. Starting in late 2020, when many multiplexes were still closed because of the coronavirus pandemic, Disney debuted three Pixar films in a row (“Soul,” “ Turning Red ” and “Luca”) online, bypassing theaters altogether.

The layoffs on Tuesday, which were reported earlier by The Hollywood Reporter, acknowledged another reality: Pixar, like other Disney-owned studios, including Marvel, lost its focus when it was pushed to create original programming for Disney+. At the time — around December 2020 — Disney was pouring money into the streaming service in a wild and ultimately unsuccessful effort to attract up to 260 million subscribers worldwide. It had 87 million at the time. It has about 154 million today.

Robert A. Iger, the chief executive of Disney, has since reversed course, emphasizing cost containment and quality — less can be more, if the standards are high. He has said repeatedly over the past year that the creative teams at Disney were stretched too thin by the streaming strategy.

As part of the retrenchment at Pixar, “ Elio ,” a movie about an 11-year-old boy who is inadvertently beamed into space, was delayed. It was supposed to arrive this March. Disney pushed it to June 2025. (Pixar’s next film in theaters will be “Inside Out 2.” It is scheduled for release on June 14.)

Pixar’s original series for Disney+ included “Cars on the Road,” focused on the “Cars” characters Lightning McQueen and Mater, and “Dug Days,” a series of shorts about the dog from the movie “Up.” The studio’s last original Disney+ series, “Win or Lose,” about a coed middle school softball team, will arrive late this year.

Pixar will continue to make the occasional short film for Disney+.
