North East Scotland College

North East Scotland College – formerly Aberdeen College and Banff & Buchan College until merger in November 2013, is one of Scotland’s largest colleges and is the largest single local provider of further education in the North East of Scotland.

The College has a major role to play in meeting the vocational education and training needs of individuals, firms and communities.  Its main hubs of delivery are located across Aberdeen, Fraserburgh and Peterhead with learning centres in Ellon, Inverurie and Macduff. The College recruits over 7000 full-time students each year across a wide range of vocational areas and a further 14,000 students enrol on part time and distance learning courses.

Recently, many casinos have been donating money to educational institutions to support the educational sector in the country. A variety of casinos, land-based, online casinos, which offer a variety of games and a variety of forms of payment, such as easyeft , are involved in this support and in order to help students with their education. In addition, casinos such as: , also donate money to other charities in the area.

Lots of casinos across the UK have been donating money to North East Scotland College in a bid to increase the college’s profile and raise funds for scholarships. The money donated by casinos has helped to boost College’s budget and fund scholarships for students. The scholarships are used to help students from low-income families attend college. The donations have also helped increase the college’s visibility and raised awareness of its services.

In addition to financial support, casinos provide volunteers with valuable experience that can be put to use in other areas. This type of collaboration between businesses and nonprofits is an important part of promoting healthy communities.

Students attending North East Scotland College, an Associate College of Robert Gordon University, are provided with enhanced progression and articulation opportunities into degree programmes.  The College also has close working relationships with the city’s other university, the University of Aberdeen.

Working with Aberdeen City Council and Aberdeenshire Council, the College also provides opportunities for pupils at school to ease transition from school to College. More than 30% of all North-East school leavers progress to North East Scotland College.

The College operates over three schools:

  • The School of Engineering, Science and Technology
  • The School of Creative Industries, Computing and Business Enterprise
  • The School of Service Industries

In addition:

  • Our Business Solutions and Part Time Learning Team meets the vocational education and training needs of individuals, firms and communities.
  • The College’s company, ASET International Oil and Gas Academy, specialises in dedicated training courses for the offshore oil and gas industries and;
  • The Scottish Maritime Academy, one of Scotland’s premier maritime training providers, serves the commercial, energy and fishing sectors.

Months of entry

Course content.

TQFE is a teaching qualification designed as an in-service professional learning opportunity for lecturers in Scotland's Colleges (people already employed in a further education college setting or other relevant setting). The programme aims to help practitioners review their own practice, extend their skills and knowledge in relation to the professional context in which they teach and enhance the experience of all learners in further education.

TQFE is approved by the Scottish Government and the General Teaching Council for Scotland. Successful completion provides eligibility for voluntary registration with the GTC(Scotland).

The programme consists of three courses at SCQF level 9 (degree route) or level 11 (masters route) delivered in partnership with colleges, flexibly online or on-site at the college campus (at the request of the college, subject to viable groups). The online route allows for small numbers of participants from different colleges to work together throughout the TQFE.

Top of the class: Looking back at Aberdeen College of Education graduations

The trainee teacher class of 1993 packed out the theatre at Aberdeen College of Education when collecting their degrees in primary education.

Student teachers graduating from the University of Aberdeen this month will be looking ahead to their probationary year when schools return after the summer.

Although Covid-19 has put a stop to in-person graduations for a second year running, graduates will still celebrate this month in absentia.

Many newly-qualified teachers will be keenly spending their summer holidays getting ready for their fledgling year in the classroom.

We’ve taken a trip down memory lane into our archives to look back at fresh-faced graduate teachers from Aberdeen’s College of Education over the years.

The imposing, granite student halls of residence at Hilton won’t be a familiar sight to teaching graduates in recent years.

This photo from 1970 shows the halls overlooking the new College of Education.

These graduates from Aberdeen College of Education’s class of 1978 were trailblazers in their field.

Jean Brodie, Ethel Cruickshank, Jean Argo, Merle Morgan, Dot McCaskill and Maureen Dunne were already qualified teachers who supported children with additional needs.

The group were the first to receive the brand new Special Education Diploma to enhance their qualifications in working with physically and mentally impaired pupils.

The College of Education was a colloquial term for several Aberdeen institutions that provided teacher training between 1874 and 2001.

In 1987, the name changed to the Northern College of Education following a merger with Dundee College of Education.

These delighted graduates were the first to receive their postgraduate certificates in primary education from the new, amalgamated colleges.

Fiona Sample, Peter Wood, Christine Laing and Pauline Kidd raise a glass for their graduation in October 1988.

Peter was one of only two male teachers studying for a Bachelor in Education at the Northern College that year – the duo were somewhat outnumbered by 63 women.

Graduation in 1988 was a happy reunion and opportunity for these former classmates to catch up, as their established teaching careers had taken them far and wide.

Duncan Mackay head teacher at Maryburgh Primary, Fiona Menzies, Alison Gauld head teacher at Rayne North and Douglas Smith from Broomhill Primary all gained their College Associateship for Teaching Upper Primary.

Fiona, a teacher with the Forces’ School in Upper Germany, jetted back in for the occasion to celebrate with her peers.

Kerry Neilson, Elaine Montague, David Wallis, Susan Lyon and Rosalind Beckett were the latest additions to the teaching workforce in October 1990.

The newly qualified teachers were celebrating the achievement of gaining their Bachelor of Education in Primary Teaching.

The Northern College Class of 1992 were together for the final time at their July graduation ceremony.

Scrolls in hand, the young teachers were out of academia and getting ready for the chalkface when schools returned in August.

Cheers to new careers! These women had every reason to celebrate – they had all worked full-time while studying for their postgraduate certificates in primary education.

Classmates Marilyn Macdonald, Dorothy Clark, Judith Philip, Alison Clark and, front, Irene Duncan, Sheila Reid and Rosemary Biddie raised a glass to all their hard work in July 1994.
