Although you might don’t want to, yet in most cases, you need to include a cover letter when applying for a job in New Zealand. NZ cover letter is similar to other countries; it should show the company why you are the right candidate for the job. Take your time to write a personal and customized letter. Never send the generic one; this can ruin your application from the start.

A cover letter is a monumental part of your job application in New Zealand. A good cover letter should answer the main question, which is why the company should hire you. Additionally, it must provide information on how you can bring value to the company and help them with the challenges. A cover letter should showcase the relevant skills and experience you have.

In most cases, businesses and recruiters in New Zealand will require you to attach a customized cover letter. And it’s a good thing for you. In the end, the cover letter is a claim for the role – it’s your chance to highlight and match your experience against the job description and to clearly state what you can offer your potential employer.

Unfortunately, yes, you need to include a customized cover letter when applying for a job in New Zealand. Almost  half of the recruiters reject applications without a cover letter. A high-quality, customized cover letter tells the manager you are a dedicated professional. It should be only a page long.

A resume or CV alone can show your achievements and qualifications, but it can’t tell the story and explain why you choose this company in particular. That’s why we need a cover letter. It’s also a great tool to show your personality and motivation. It must show the employer you are an asset to their company.

So what is a cover letter, and why it’s so important for your job application in New Zealand?

• Cover letter is your first point of contact with employers .
• It should fit on one page .
• It needs to explain why you want this job .
• It should relate to your CV .
• It should describe your relevant skills, experience, and accomplishments .
• It should show the evidence that you have researched the company and that you are the right candidate.

If you follow these simple statements, you should already be able to create a decent letter. Yet, if you want more, read this article to the end and follow the advice.

The winning tactic here is focusing on  them , not just on  you,  which will ultimately make you stand out from other applicants

When writing your cover letter, pay attention to the following:

• Do very extensive research about the company. Show it in the cover letter.
• Reflect on the company’s vision.
• Highlight specific achievements and successes that show you can address the challenges the employer is facing.
• Show your personality.
• Prove that you understand the challenges of the company.
• Explain your motivation and fit for the position.
• Presents how your skills and experience as a solution for the company.
• Create a list of job keywords that are mentioned in the job ad. Include them in the cover letter.
• Address the cover letter to the right person, e.g., the hiring manager or recruiter
• Be clear and concise
• Have a structure in the letter – beginning, middle, end
• Use active words to describe your work – accomplished, achieved, led, created, increased, identified
• Finish with a call to action and ask for a meeting.

Your knowledge about the company you are applying to work for is crucial. You must also know all the essential details about the advertised position and how your skills and experience fit in.

When someone reads your cover letter, they must be sure you are the right candidate for this position and for this company. That’s why you must include as many tailored to the job ad details as possible (yet not too many).

So, look for information on the company, its key products or services, its mission, and anything else that gives you an insight into them. Notice the most important details and mention them in the cover letter where appropriate.

You might want to check out the company’s website, its executives’ Twitter feeds, and LinkedIn profiles.

The culture of the organization is vital to note. This will influence your communication style. For instance, you might be more casual with start-ups or advertising agencies but more formal with banks and large corporations.

2. Show how you can help

A company hires you to solve a problem or to help with challenging tasks they are unable to manage. Point out the things you can do for a company and which potential results it might bring. Or maybe you already were challenged with similar tasks? Mention it in your cover letter!

Here you should match the keywords mentioned in the job ad with your skills and experience. You also must show the hiring manager why you want this job, not just any job. Include all the enthusiasm and passion you have.

Match your skills with a job ad

Highlight the key skills and qualities in the ad, e.g.:

• strong written and verbal communication
• technical skills
• analytical thinking
• team player or teamwork
• problem-solving
• time management
• knowledge of software & tools
• specialized or technical competencies
• high level of computer competency
• ability to work well under pressure
• enthusiasm and initiative
• excellent customer service

Include them in the cover letter with real-life examples.

Connections matter in New Zealand

About 70% of all jobs in New Zealand are so-called hidden. They are simply not advertised because hiring managers seek candidates within the company, their circle of colleagues, and people they know before they post a job ad. For that reason, having connections in New Zealand is very crucial.

You are more likely to be invited to an interview if you know a friend of a friend and they got a reference they you rather than just based on your qualifications and experience.

That might be good news for some and bad news for others. Nonetheless, it’s highly recommended to start networking as soon as you land in New Zealand. Join groups, participate in social and professional events, work on your Linkedin profile, and just be proactive.

And if you are lucky to know someone in the company you are applying to work for, mention it in the first sentence or two of your cover letter.

Your personal value and personality

While skills and experiences are indeed critical, New Zealanders love human connection. If they find you an interesting and nice person, they are more likely to move forward with your application.

Try to be personal in your cover letter; tell them more unique things about you and your experience. Avoid being general at any cost.

Reflect on your experience that relates to the job ad and company profile. What challenges have you faced, and how did you solve them? You also want to provide evidence of the things you mention by using concrete examples, situations, numbers, and facts. For example:

“During the last quarter, my company was challenged by the supply shortage of …We have had 200% more orders than we can ever fulfill. To solve this problem, I was on the lookout for new suppliers for several weeks; after dozens of selling calls, I finally managed to sign a contract with our best supplier so far. I will never come across them otherwise.”

Your enthusiasm

In many cases, people don’t get hired because they aren’t enthusiastic and convincing enough. So, it’s not the lack of skills; it’s your desire and how you show it. If you make it as if it was your dream job, you are more likely to be invited. Avoid at any cost writing in a manner as you are doing a company a favor by working for them.

Hiring managers even say, “Enthusiasm conveys personality.” Some tips that help you to point out your enthusiasm include:

• Show that you have thought about the job and why you would like to work for them.
• Why is this company so brilliant? What they do the best? How they stand out?
• Mention their reputation, performance, and product.
• Remember, it’s about what you can do for them, not what they can do for you.

Im most cases, Immigration New Zealand, will request a cover or so-called motivational letter together with your visa application. This is generally a less complex document that you would write for the employer.

Your cover letter for a visa should include:

• Reasons why you are moving or visiting New Zealand
• How are you going to support yourself

Bona Fide & How To Write One (To Get Your New Zealand Visitor Visa)

Depending on which country you’re from, you can stay in New Zealand for 3 months under a Visitor Visa. But what if circumstances cause you to stay there for longer than 3 months? This is when you need to write a bona fide.

Hence, this post is for you if you need to write up a bona fide to get a visitor’s visa (specifically the one for New Zealand).

It may also serve as a useful reference even if you are not going to New Zealand.

Why Did My Bona Fide Get Rejected By The NZ Immigration?

Types of visitor visa new zealand.

To put it simply, this visa will allow you to travel in New Zealand for a maximum of 9 months . You can visit friends, go for a sports event, etc.

And you can even study for a total of 3 months.

But there should absolutely be no working on your part – not for food, money or accommodation.

There are 2 types of Visitor Visa in New Zealand:

Visa Waiver Visitor Visa (Waiver Country)

As of 1 October, 2019 anyone from the 60 waiver countries listed will now have to pay for an NZeTA to enter New Zealand. That includes Malaysia! More details below under requirements for a visitor visa to New Zealand.

The maximum number of months you can stay in New Zealand with this visa is 3 months for non-UK citizens. UK citizens get to stay up to 6 months with this visa.

You don’t need any documentation except your passport and a return ticket for this visa when you arrive at the immigration in New Zealand.

And if all goes well, you should get a stamp in your passport from the respective officer.

For this visa, it is EXTREMELY IMPORTANT that you fill out your arrival card as honestly as possible.

• It’s possible to extend your stay in New Zealand (e.g. after your 6 months’ working holiday is complete) with this visa.
• However, if you’re already in New Zealand: y ou’ll have to first fly out of the country first and show proof of sufficient funds (for up to 3 months, including your return ticket or the ticket receipt).

But this blog post is mainly focusing on the other type of visitor visa:

Visitor Visa

This visa cost me $165 NZD back in 2018 and lets you stay in New Zealand for a maximum of 9 months.

Note: As of 17th May 2022, the cost of applying for the visitor visa increased to $246.

Provided that you have not already exceeded a total of 9 months’ stay in New Zealand in an 18 month period.

In contrast to the previous Visitor Visa (Country Waiver):

You need all sorts of paperwork as evidence that you will be a genuine visitor.

Don’t put this off to the last minute because it really does take the immigration office a long time to process applications for the Visitor Visa.

For your reference, I submitted my application in May 21, 2018 and got the Visa in June 13, 2018 – a total of 18 working days.

• If rejected, you must apply for the Visa again (and pay$246 fee again – ouch).
• Read the guidelines on the official site carefully before applying.
• Try to apply at least a month ahead of your intended start date too.

Requirements For Visitor Visa New Zealand

Nzeta and ivl for visa waiver travellers.

What is this the NZeTA?

All would-be visitors (including transit) to New Zealand must check if they need an NZeTA (New Zealand Electronic Travel Authority) before going to New Zealand.

Besides this NZeTA, you may have to pay an International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy (IVL) too.

Who’s applicable?

• Anyone visiting or in-transit from a visa waiver country (see the list of visa waiver countries )
• Permanent residents of Australia
• Anyone travelling on a passport from a transit visa waiver country who will be in transit through Auckland International Airport on the way out to another country
• Even cruise ship passengers from visa waiver countries must have an NZeTA.

Who’s not applicable for the NZeTa?

• Anyone who needs a visa for New Zealand or is already holding a valid one (this includes a Permanent Resident Visa)
• New Zealand citizens
• Australian citizen travelling with Australia passport

How do I apply for the NZeTa?

There are 2 methods:

• NZeTA online request system on immigration.govt.nz
• Download the immigration App and apply through there.

When to apply for the NZeTa:

It takes up to 72 hours for your NZeTA to be approved so do so way before your trip to avoid being barred from boarding the plane!

How much will application cost?

The cost of the IVL (International Visitor Conservation and Tourism Levy) will be NZD $35 and will be charged together in the same transaction as your NZeTA:

If you apply online , it will be NZD $12 + NZD $35 = NZD $47

And if you apply through their app , it will be NZD $9 + NZD $35 = NZD $44

How long are my NZeTA and IVL valid for?

They are valid for multiple visits and up to a maximum of 2 years .

Criteria You Have To Meet For A Visitor Visa

• Be able to prove your identity
• Have good health or acknowledge (and prove) that you will pay for your own health care
• Most importantly, you have to be a genuine tourist – no funny business or working under table.
• You can apply for your family in the same application but you have to pay the fees per head
• Prove that you have sufficient funds needed to travel around and a ticket to get out of New Zealand later (or have evidence of a sponsorship)
• No major criminal offenses or previous denial to a visa from another country – you might be able to talk your way out of this one through your bona fide but there is no guarantee

Paperwork For A New Zealand Visitor Visa

These are the things you have to upload together with your online application on the official New Zealand immigration website:

Tip: The client number is not the visa waiver stamp number on your passport in case you are wondering. You can leave this blank unless you do have one from a previous application.

• Bona fide letter
• Chest x-ray documentation – it cost me $160 to do it in Auckland (back in 2018). If it’s cheaper in your own country, do that instead. Check the official website for the list of panel clinics in your country.
• Resume or CV – it goes without saying that this should be your most recent resume
• Bank statement –  at least $1000 NZD** for every month (per person and including accommodation) you intend to stay (not including the money for the flight tickets!)
• A scanned softcopy of your passport (make sure your passport validity covers the duration of your intended stay!)
• Passport photo – Save some money and do this in your own country.

It cost me $25 NZD to get it done at the post office in a small town in New Zealand. Check out the passport photo do’s and don’t’s on the official website first !

**Alternatively, you just need to show that you have:

• At least $400 NZD per month per person together with proof of payment for your accommodation in New Zealand
• A financial sponsor to cover you during your stay in New Zealand

More Information On The Chest X-ray Requirement

• The clinic submitted the x-ray form to the immigration office on my behalf.
• Note that your x-ray must come from a panel clinic listed on the official New Zealand immigration website.
• When I last checked, there were only two acceptable clinics for Malaysia. One was a clinic in Kuala Lumpur and another one was located in Penang.
• Auckland however, has many panel clinics – the one I went to was walking distance from my rented house.

What Is A Bonafide?

To start with, a bona fide can be a cover letter that explains your background and purpose of visiting the country that you wish to apply for.

It may also include your future plans after your intended time in the country you visit. And that is the case if you want to apply for a New Zealand visitor visa.

The bona fide should serve to clear any doubts the immigration may have on your true intentions:

You can therefore also explain why you don’t intend to permanently immigrate to New Zealand. For example, proof of a steady business in your home country. Or several properties that you own and manage in your own country.

Another important reason for a bonafide is to prove that you have the financial means to support yourself during your stay in New Zealand (without having to work there), and be able to fly out of the country on the designated date.

Why Do You Need A Bona fide?

New Zealand immigration requires a black and white softcopy of such a document.

You can upload it online together with the other documents listed above. After making a RealMe account (an easy and straightforward process in itself).

Use the bona fide letter to tie all your evidence together (not literally, of course!).

When I wrote my own bona fide, I wasn’t sure whether it would even be approved or not. There were no templates to follow and the instructions on the official New Zealand immigration site were very general.

Bona Fide Sample Letter

Disclaimer – Using this template or following the guidelines below will not guarantee your success in obtaining a visa (from whichever country you are trying to apply for) by using this template. I’m just sharing what worked for me back in 2018 when I successfully applied and obtained an extended visitor visa (with just one application) to stay longer in New Zealand with my then-boyfriend who had a NZ Working Holiday Visa.

You can use this as a base template for your own bona fide.

Guidelines To Writing A Bona Fide For A New Zealand Visitor Visa

I based the following guidelines on what I could piece together from various sources online.

• Firstly, state why you want the visitor visa. (e.g. for me, my main reason was to follow my then-boyfriend who successfully obtained a working holiday visa. I included his visa application number here at this point.) Mention what you plan to do while in New Zealand. It should be very clear that you are not going to set up a business or work part time while you are there.
• Include a summary of your travel plans – just put it into one of your first paragraphs. If you have a detailed plan, you can attached it together with the cover letter.
• Next, write something on your family background. The purpose is to show that your roots are still in your own country and it’s highly unlikely you would move to New Zealand.
• Education background – short summary will do
• Working background – write a short summary on your working history and add your current resume to the upload
• Health background – if you have any major ailments, here is where you can mention those. I think you will have a higher chance of getting your visa approved if you’re relatively healthy. Otherwise, make sure your bank statements reflect that you can cover your own medical expenses.
• Travel background – your intention to travel to New Zealand for a holiday appears more credible if you have already been to other countries for a holiday before. List them down together with the year and month of travel as well as the duration of each trip. State what the purpose of each trip was and if you had any problems obtaining a Visa for those. Drop old Visa numbers here if you still have them.

Tip: Please make sure to include how long you want to stay (an exact date would be best). Do not take for granted that they will grant you 9 months – they won’t . Ask for multiple entry as well.

Ending Your Bona Fide Cover Letter For A Visitor Visa

Besides all of the above, I added more details on our travel plans (by month) in New Zealand as well as our current  New Zealand address and phone number. I even put our camper car’s license plate number and my boyfriend’s New Zealand working history.

If you need to leave New Zealand and re-enter again during your holiday duration in New Zealand, please request for it.

Explain why you would need a multiple-entry Visa . Put down the exact date you plan to leave New Zealand (i.e. the last day of your holiday) if you can too. They will not grant you 9 months by default.

At the very end of my bona fide cover letter, I shared my future travel plans after New Zealand to emphasize that I would not be migrating to New Zealand in the future.

My last point was to drop my email address and ask them to contact me if there were any questions (They didn’t have any questions though).

After writing your letter, covert it into a pdf and upload it together with the other documents.

As of May 2022, visa application processing for the Visitor Visa can take anywhere between 44 days to 5 months. Check here for the latest update .

Back in 2018, it was 21 days and if successful, you should get an email from the New Zealand immigration that contains your client number and your visitor visa. The expiry date will be clearly stated too.

Moreover, if you did request for multiple-entry and the request got through, it will be stated there too. Good luck in your application!

Making Changes After Your Visa Has Been Approved

Let’s say you need to change your visa conditions to multiple-entry. Or, you want to extend further.

Here are some things to consider:

• You have to pay the fee of $165 NZD again (now $246 NZD) and submit online again but with the previous supporting documents with some exceptions (e.g. update bank statement and cover letter)
• The X-ray certificate is valid for up to 3 years
• Use the same passport photo you uploaded last time if you still look the same.

Before you go through all the effort of extending your current visitor visa, consider the possibility of flying out of New Zealand before the end of your visa and coming back with the visitor waiver visa.

For example, if your visitor visa happens to end on Jan 1, 2019. You could fly out of New Zealand and come back with the visitor visa (waiver country) then.

But what if you’ve already used the visitor visa (waiver) before?

According to the immigration officer I called, my visitor waiver visa record (I previously used 2 of 3 allowed months) reset when I obtained the longer visitor visa.

In fact, he said as long as I leave the country before Jan 1, 2019, I could come back in using my refreshed visitor waiver visa (i.e. another 3 months).

Don’t forget:

The same conditions still apply for the visitor waiver visa – e.g. return ticket out of New Zealand and proof of sufficient funds during your visit to New Zealand

Working Holiday Visa For New Zealand

Or you could try your luck with the Working Holiday visa (if you were never successfully granted one before and you are still less than 31 years old.

The immigration office will unfortunately not state the reason for your application getting rejected.

So to answer this question, think back on what you wrote in your bona fide. Did you give them reason to suspect your real intentions of going to New Zealand?

Reasons A Bona Fide Will Be Rejected By The NZ Immigration

Here are some possible reasons why your bona fide was rejected based on what is listed on the NZ immigration official website (and also my own thoughts on the matter):

• Evidence and content in your bona fide (as well as previous applications) don’t match up
• There is cause to believe that your actual reason for visiting New Zealand is false (e.g., different from you wrote on your visa application or arrival card) or unlawful
• It appears doubtful that you will follow the conditions of your visa (e.g., previous visa rejection from another country, lack of sufficient funds, previous breach of visa conditions, etc)
• You are missing some necessary documents to return to your home country (this is why having a return flight ticket might increase your chances of getting your application approved)
• You’ve exceed the maximum length of stay possible for your circumstances and country of origin
• Your country of origin is not in the visa waiver country list (this might affect your chances of success)
• Your passport validity is not long enough (I.e., expiry date must be at least 3 months after the indented date of your visit)

When they say lawful purposes, they mean any of the following – you are going to New Zealand simply for a holidaying or sightseeing, to visit friends and relatives, training or studying in New Zealand for 3 months or less, for your wedding or a business consultation, or to participate in an amateur sports event.

Other reasons they may accept include getting medical treatment in New Zealand. Or if you have a personal invitation from the the NZ government.

Whatever, the reason, you are NOT ALLOWED to work in New Zealand during the duration of your stay if you are holding a Visitor Visa.

Note: Applicable to both Visa Waiver Visitor Visa and Visitor Visa

Furthermore, if you’re travelling with a partner, you have to prove your relationship (a screenshot of your chat history is not good enough) and they must have a clear record too (e.g. following their visa conditions, no previous visa rejections or criminal records, etc).

By now, you should at least know how to get started on your New Zealand bona fide – that pesky (but unfortunately crucial) letter that stands between you and a visitor visa.

Don’t forget to specify exactly when you want the visa to end (no more than 9 months in a 12 month period). Or else, the immigration office will do it for you and they will put the bare minimum (the date of your flight).

We really recommend you to call the NZ immigration office yourself before your trip as they have the latest information on visas. It takes a while to get through to the office so list down all your questions first!

Hi, what about a group visa? As a group leader do I to provide all my member with each individual Bona Fide letter or can I simply write one for all. Thanks

Applying by group just needs one bona fide letter, I believe.

By the way, I have also asked the immigration office before, you still have to pay the application fee per head either way. In case you were thinking it might save some money.

Hi, my parents applied for a visitors visa with all supporting documents but have declined stating whether or not the applicant for temporary entry or entry permission is a bona fide applicant. What can be done? i shall apply again but what more documents should i put since they are retired. I

There may be many reasons for a rejection of a bona fide: 1. Supporting documents are not official or don’t look authentic 2. No clear travel plan provided – it must be very clear that your parents are only there for a holiday

How to write an NZ cover letter (with examples and templates)

Along with your CV, a cover letter is essential to any NZ job application. Let's get you started.

Every New Zealand job application should include a cover letter.

This document is key to showing an employer you’re serious about their vacancy, and for demonstrating what you bring to the table . Despite its importance, many people aren’t sure how to write a cover letter – and their applications suffer as a result.

That’s why we’ve created this guide, giving you advice on everything from what to include, to how to lay it out.

We’ve also snuck in a few examples to make life even easier for you … aren’t we nice?

Cover letters vs. CVs: what’s the difference?

To understand the role cover letters play in job applications, it’s important to realise how they differ from CVs:

1. Purpose:

CVs give a broad picture of you as an applicant – providing details such as educational background and employment history . By contrast, a cover letter targets why you want this specific role, and how your skills and experience make you a great candidate.

While there will be areas of overlap as you select qualifications or abilities to draw out in your cover letter, it definitely should not be an elongated version of your CV.

An NZ cover letter should be no longer than one page, while CVs are usually between one and two.

The most obvious visual difference between these documents and CVs hinges around bullet points.

While your CV should be a bullet point bonanza, cover letters favour full sentences. That’s not to say you can’t have any bullets in a cover letter, just use them more sparingly.

You should include a cover letter with every job application.

What to include in a cover letter

1. your contact info, the date and the business’ address.

At the top of your cover letter should be:

• Your full name, contact details and home address
• The date you submit the application
• The business’ postal address

It should look like this:

2. Your opener

People worry about how to start a cover letter , but there’s a simple formula and structure for getting this right:

Make it personal : start with ‘dear’, and address it to a person – i.e. the hiring manager. If their name isn’t in the job listing, try a good old fashioned stalk of the company website, or ring the business and find out. ‘To whom it may concern’ is a no go.

Make it clear : organisations often list multiple vacancies at a time, so make it obvious which position you’re applying for. A sentence like, ‘I’m writing to apply for the Marketing Assistant role, as advertised on Trade Me Jobs’, will do the trick.

Make it punchy : next, add a snappy one-liner summing up why you’re interested in the role and what you’d bring to their business. Remember, you can go into more detail in the interview itself. For example:

3. Why them

A common cover letter mistake is to only focus on yourself. Before choosing you, employers want to know why you’re choosing them. This helps sort candidates who are genuinely passionate about their organisation from those who are mass applying to anything and everything.

Warning : this section is not about inflating the hiring manager's ego by flattering the company – be positive, but be thoughtful.

Now, it’s time to sell yourself.

This section of your cover letter is where you highlight your most relevant skills and experience.

You can draw on anything from previous work experience to certificates and qualifications. The important bit is linking whatever you mention to the job – simply listing skills is not the answer.

To do this effectively, you need to carefully study the job ad and identify what capabilities the employer values most. If your Trade Me Jobs Profile is up-to-date, you can then quickly skim your skills and experience to find those which most closely match the job description.

Top tip: the more detail you can give, the better. Helped raise sales? Great. Helped raise sales by 6%? Even better.

If you want to add some extra skills or information to this section, a bullet point list is a good option. Note : only do this after introducing your headline examples in full sentence form, as above, and keep your list to three or four concise bullets.

5. Signing off

The end of your cover letter should (politely) prompt the reader to get in touch with you to arrange the next steps. Make sure you end on a high, and continue the energy from earlier in your closing sentence, for example:

How to format a cover letter

With your content sorted, it’s now about nailing the visuals. Cover letters are usually easier than CVs in this regard, as they’re laid out like a traditional letter. However, there are a few things to bear in mind:

• What font should I use? Keep it simple, and the same as on your CV. If your font is hard to read, or too small, the letter will end up in the wrong pile.
• How long should a cover letter be? New Zealand cover letters should be under one page long.
• Should I use paragraphs? Would you read huge, unbroken chunks of text? We doubt it, so make sure to break up your cover letters into paragraphs.
• What are the correct cover letter margins? Leave these at their default setting so your cover letter has plenty of blank space, and doesn’t look crowded.

All done? Not quite.

Perhaps the most important stage of cover letter writing is proofreading. After all that hard work, you don’t want a few silly typos or poor punctuation letting you down.

So check it yourself, then get someone else to have a look, then have a final glance.

Once you’re happy, it’s time to attach it to your application, and hit send.

How to write a great stand out Cover Letter

Our Job Search Coach Jannie Allen shares her insider tips.

Jannie says:

"The cover letter is a claim for the role – it is your chance to highlight and match your experience against the job description and to clearly state what you can offer your potential employer.

It is a targeted single-page document to the person who advertised the position. It is often your first point of contact with an employer/recruiter to get them interested in reading your CV and interviewing you."

Your Cover Letter should show:

- Why you are interested in the role - Your relevant skills, experience, and accomplishments - Evidence that you have researched the company and that you would be a good fit.

Structuring the Cover Letter:

Before you start the main part of the letter, write your mobile number, email address and Skype ID at the top left-hand side of the letter. Follow this by the date and then write Re: followed by the title of the job you are applying for and a reference number if it’s provided. Check the listing carefully as this reference is often at the end of the ad. Then follow with a greeting, addressing the person by name (if at all possible).

Open with a strong statement giving the reason you are applying for the position.

What you have you been doing, relevant to the role you are applying for. Be skills/achievements focused and focused on what you can bring to the company rather than what the company can do for you.

What kind of person are you (hint: mention your qualities which are aligned to the role)

Your motivation for wanting to settle in NZ and why you want to live in that particular area. Invite the reader to contact you if they have any questions about your application.

Writing the Cover Letter:

If a contact person is mentioned in the listing, it is recommended that you make a connection, preferably by phoning them, so that you can introduce yourself and ask some questions about the role. That way your application will stand out. ‍

In conclusion, in your cover letter you need to present a strong case for the best matched skills and experience against the job description.

Never send out a generic letter as this is one way to communicate that you have not tried to research the role or the company, and that you are not genuinely interested.

WHAT IS COVERED IN THIS ARTICLE?

New Zealand Tourist Visa Application: A Step-by-Step Guide

Step 1: determine if you need to apply.

Firstly, let’s establish whether you need a visitor visa or an NZeTA to visit New Zealand. If you are travelling with a passport from a country eligible for a visa waiver or if you are an Australian permanent resident (non-citizen), you need to obtain an NZeTA. You can apply on the NZeTA website to obtain one.

But if you fall under any of the following conditions, you need to apply for a visitor visa:

• Your travel involves a passport from a country or territory not eligible for a visa waiver.
• You plan to stay for more than 3 months (or 6 months for UK residents).
• You do not meet the criteria of good character, such as having a criminal conviction.
• Your health is not in good condition, or you are coming to NZ for medical consultation or treatment.

 You can check whether your country is on the list of visa waiver countries on the official website of New Zealand Immigration.  

Note: It is not required to have both an NZeTA and a visitor visa.

Step 2: Choose Your Application Method

Now, let’s discuss how you can apply for a New Zealand Visitor Visa. If you prefer a convenient and efficient way to apply for your New Zealand tourist visa, applying online is your best option. This method streamlines the application process and allows you to submit your documents electronically.

If you are going to apply online, you can follow this link to start your New Zealand Visitor Visa application. For an online application, you have to create a RealMe account first or log into an existing one. If you feel the need to find assistance in filling out this application, you can reach out to us at our Visa Application Helpline.

Visitor Visa Application (1017) for Non-Online Applications

If you cannot apply online or prefer a paper application, you can use the Visitor Visa Application form (1017) for non-online applications. This traditional method requires you to fill out the necessary forms and provide physical copies of your supporting documents.

Make sure to complete the form thoroughly and accurately, providing truthful details in uppercase letters. Additionally, enclose two identical photos of yourself, captured within the last six months, and inscribe your full name on the back of each photo.

Required Documents for New Zealand Visitor Visa

• Valid Passport and your Photo: It is emphasized that you must have a valid passport for the duration of your planned stay. You will also be required to submit your latest photo which must be 3.5 cm wide and 4.5 cm high.
• Proof of good health: To ensure the safety and well-being of New Zealand, visa applicants may need to provide medical certificates as part of the application process. These documents serve as evidence that you pose no threat during your visit.
• Proof of Healthcare Financial Responsibility: As an applicant, you are responsible for covering your healthcare costs during your stay in New Zealand. This financial commitment is an integral part of the visa application.
• Proof of Genuine Tourist Intent: To obtain a New Zealand tourist visa, you must present proof of your genuine intent to be a tourist and leave the country at the end of your authorized stay. This can be evidenced through return tickets, itineraries, or adequate financial means.
• Proof of Financial Sufficiency: Successful visa applications require demonstrating sufficient financial resources to support yourself during your time in New Zealand. This includes providing bank statements, proof of employment or income, or a commitment from a financial sponsor.
• Proof of Your Relationship: If you are going to be travelling with your partner, you are required to submit documents such as Marriage or civil union certificates or Joint bank accounts and in the case of children, you can provide their birth certificate. 
• Proof of Good Character Requirement: Your New Zealand tourist visa application necessitates a demonstration of good character. This involves disclosing any criminal history or convictions. Accurate and thorough reporting is vital to prevent the risk of rejection.

Attend Interviews or Medical Examinations (if required)

Depending on your visa type, you may be asked to attend an interview or undergo medical examinations. Follow any instructions provided during the application process.

Step 3: Schedule Your Appointment (Offline Application Only)

To initiate your visa application process, book an appointment with VFS.GLOBAL at a designated visa application centre. Fill in the necessary details, including your full name, contact information, passport details, and any additional information required by the appointment booking system.

If your country lacks a New Zealand visa application centre, you must submit your application to the nearest one in another country. Upon successful booking, expect a confirmation email and an appointment letter.

Attend Your Appointment

Make sure that you reach the designated visa application centre on time for your appointment. Here, you have to first submit your completed application and all the requisite documents.

Upon submission, your document will be returned through a courier service, available at an additional charge for postal applications in certain Visa Application Centers.

Step 4: Paying New Zealand Visitor Visa Application Costs 

The cost of your New Zealand tourist visa may vary depending on your chosen application method. The application fees start from NZD 211 and can be higher depending on your particular case. This is because sometimes you have to pay a levy and sometimes, you may not have to pay the fee. You can check this on New Zealand Immigration’s website as well. 

Payment Options and Common Methods

You have several payment options available for your visa application fee:

• For online applications: Enter your bank card details during the online application. When your payment is successfully processed, you will get a confirmation email which you must keep as proof.
• For paper applications : As discussed above, enter your bank card details in the payment section titled ‘Paying your application fee and levies’ of the paper application. Make sure that the card details are correct and that you have sufficient funds on the application submission day to avoid rejection.

Note on Non-Refundable Fees in Case of Application Rejection

Keep in mind that visa application fees are typically non-refundable, even if your application is rejected. Therefore, ensuring that your application is complete and meets all requirements is essential. If you have any doubts, consider seeking professional assistance or guidance to increase the chances of a successful application.

Step 5: Processing Time & Receiving Your Visa

Now, that you have successfully applied for a New Zealand Visitor visa and paid the fee, you have to wait through the processing time. Many factors affect the processing time of a visa application but in the case of New Zealand Visitor Visa, it is usually 40 days to 56 days.

Factors Affecting Processing Time

The processing time for your New Zealand visa application can be influenced by several factors, including:

• Application Complexity: Different visa types have different processing times. Some visas may be processed more quickly than others due to their complexity and demand.
• Location: Your location can impact processing time. Visa processing times can vary based on the country or region where you apply. High-demand locations may experience longer processing times.
• Completeness of Application: A well-prepared and complete application is more likely to be processed efficiently. If your application is missing required documents or information, it may experience delays.
• Immigration Workload: The volume of visa applications being processed at a given time can affect processing times. Seasonal variations and government priorities may also play a role.
• Interview or Health Checks: If your visa type requires interviews, medical examinations, or character assessments, these additional steps can extend the processing time.
• Specific Circumstances: Certain individual circumstances, such as previous immigration history or requests for additional information, can impact the processing time.

Tracking Your Application

You can also track the status of your New Zealand visa application on your RealMe account. This tool allows you to monitor the progress of your application and provides updates on its status. 

Be sure to keep the reference number or identification details provided during your application submission handy to use the tracking system effectively. If your application is delayed or if you have specific concerns, you can also contact the appropriate immigration office or centre for assistance and inquiries regarding your application’s status.

Receiving a Label in Your Passport or a Confirmation Letter
