Detailed findings & methodology: CEOWORLD magazine surveyed 150,00 business executives, graduates, global business influencers, industry professionals, business school academics, employers, and recruiters in 156 countries and territories between November 15, 2021, and February 22, 2022. Ten percent of the interviews were conducted by telephone, 82% online, and 8% by post or face-to-face. All quantitative interviews were conducted on a confidential basis, without relying on institutions’ data submissions.

To establish our list, we collected information and statistics from publicly available sources, research, and survey. Participants were asked to rate institutions on a scale of 1 “marginal” to 100 “outstanding” or “don’t know.” The 2022 Global Universities survey was carried out by the CEOWORLD magazine – the website for CEOs, COOs, CFOs, senior corporate executives, business leaders, private equity investors, investment bankers, and high net worth individuals worldwide. CEOWORLD magazine ranked 173 Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) programs around the world.

The rankings are based on seven major metrics of quality and reputation. Overall Score (100%) is the sum of:

1) Academic reputation 2) Admission Eligibility 3) Job placement rate 4) Recruiter feedback 5) Specialization 6) Global reputation and influence 7) Annual tuition and fees

However, this is by no means a comprehensive list, while the institutions above are the CEOWORLD magazine’s “Best Universities For Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) 2022,” there may be many other universities that offer excellent programs. This ranking should not be viewed as the most important aspect when choosing a business school, and are merely one element to consider.

The margin of sampling error for the full sample of 150,00 respondents is plus or minus 1.2 percentage points. In addition to sampling error, one should bear in mind that as in all survey research, there are possible sources of error—such as coverage, nonresponse, and measurement error——that could affect the results.

Not all figures add up to 100% as a result of rounding percentages and excluding ‘neither/nor’ and ‘don’t know’ responses from exhibit. The base for global figures is 150,00 (global respondents) unless otherwise stated. All responses are kept confidential to allow survey participants to share their perspectives in a respectful, truthful, unbiased, and collegial setting. Are you interested in becoming a business professor or pursuing a Ph.D. in Business Administration? There are several reasons why this is an excellent idea, including job security, intellectual stimulation, a lucrative income , flexible work conditions, and more. Given the current shortage of individuals holding a doctoral degree in business administration and the increasing demand for their services, now is an excellent time to consider pursuing a Ph.D. in Business Administration.

What is the Current Demand for Professionals with a Ph.D. in Business Administration?

In today’s business, the number of new doctorates is less than the average of positions available. This tendency is due to three current realities:

  • Many senior faculty members are retiring or will soon retire,
  • There is an increase in the number of graduate students seeking business degrees (a trend likely to continue), and finally,
  • There remains an insufficient number of doctoral students enrolling in and completing doctoral business programs.

According to a survey conducted by AACSB International , demand for Ph.D.s in business schools rose slightly in 2006 while the overall vacancy rate rose to 6.8 percent. At the same time, the estimated growth in business faculty positions for 2007 was 4.7 percent. Overall, the shortage of business faculty staff members is predicted to reach 2,400 in the coming years.

The staff shortage has resulted in more attractive salaries for faculty at business schools. Combined with additional payment for activities such as summer teaching and research, consulting, sponsored papers, executive program teaching, textbook writing, and presentations, business administrators enjoy healthy incomes.

What Kind of Lifestyle Can a Ph.D. in Business Administration Expect?

Professionals with this type of degree can become economists, C-level executives, financial managers, and educators. Professionals working in traditional areas of executive business leadership will often experience more high-pressure roles within their organizations. University professors, however, enjoy many lifestyle and work privileges that are not typically found in other professions.

Significant intellectual and professional autonomy allows for an atypical degree of freedom in defining workflow and developing academic activity areas. Nine-month contracts in higher education allow professors the freedom to travel and experience alternative teaching, consulting, and research assignments. Tenured faculty in higher education have employment that provides unprecedented job security.

The opportunity to teach high capacity students, undertake research, and develop professional relations with colleagues across the nation and world is unrivaled in most other professions. Being a professor also means searching for knowledge that will make a mark on society and business practice. Through research and teaching, a Ph.D. in Business Administration can significantly affect the industry by influencing organizations to become more efficient, innovative, and profitable. They can also contribute by creating jobs and economic prosperity at the national level.

What Careers Can I Qualify for After Completing a PhD in Business Administration?

Ph.D. programs prepare students to conduct specialized scholarly research. Most Ph.D. in business administration graduates enter careers as university professors, senior researchers, or consultants in business or government.

These professionals use data to suggest ways that organizations can operate efficiently. They gather and analyze information to develop and investigate potential solutions and system improvements. Business analysts use data modeling techniques to help businesses improve their processes.

What are the Different Types of Doctoral Programs in Business Administration?

The two main degree designations offered by business programs are the Doctor of Philosophy (Ph.D.) and the Doctor of Business Administration (DBA) . In an earlier business education era, the DBA was regarded as providing broad exposure to business subjects geared towards practice. Simultaneously, the Ph.D. was thought to focus more on research in a given business realm. Over the years, the distinction between these two degrees has become blurred at many business schools.

Today, the Ph.D. is more widely available at business schools than the DBA, particularly in the United States. Most Ph.D. programs require full-time enrollment, while it is more common for DBA students to complete the degree on a part-time basis.

Will I need a Graduate Degree and Business Experience to Qualify for a Ph.D. in Business Administration?

While requirements vary among programs, many do not require that doctoral students have a graduate degree in business. There is no specific requirement to have business work experience either. However, students lacking a business background or degree will likely have to take foundational business courses.

  • Tuition Cost -Tuition costs for Ph.D. degrees run the spectrum. Some students get funding from employers, scholarships, and other sources of support. Tuition varies depending on whether students choose on-campus programs or online Ph.D. programs, public or private institutions, and whether the student qualifies as a resident.
  • Program Fees -Aside from tuition rates, Ph.D. students pay fees for books and other course-related items. Extra expenses associated with a graduate program can include computers, technical support, high-speed Internet, and other resources. Read all of the tuition information a business school gives. How do I Know What Doctoral Program to Select?

Personal considerations, including geographical location and educational preferences in a specialized field of interest, are criteria that will help narrow the range of possibilities. One primary concern is whether a particular business school has staff who specialize in the prospective student’s study area.

Students may assume that all schools offer similar types of emphases and pay relatively no attention to the faculty’s specific research interests. This may cause unfortunate surprises once a student enrolls in a doctoral program.

Even among leading postgraduate programs at the nation’s top research universities, there are significant differences in what areas schools have national and international recognition for teaching and research. Potential students should research faculty interest areas at all schools being considered.

What Role do Accreditations and Rankings Play in Considering a Ph.D.?

Publications that offer rankings of business schools should be viewed with an understanding of their goals and priorities. All rankings are subjective to each entity’s priorities and goals. Some focus on cost, some on college support, some on peer review, and some on student reviews. Ranking exposure should never substitute a student’s own research and investigation, but only to aid as a tool.

A crucial selection factor to consider is accreditation. Accreditation is a viable measure indicating that knowledgeable peers from a neutral institution have determined that a school’s program meets accreditation standards for:

  • Faculty composition,
  • Intellectual contributions,
  • Curriculum content, and
  • Instructional resources.

Most non-profit colleges and universities in the nation hold institutional accreditation conferred by regional accrediting agencies. Within the field of business, separate specialized accrediting agencies grant business accreditation to business schools or individual business programs. Among the top is AACSB . Selecting a business school accredited by AACSB is an assurance that the institution provides a high-quality education.

What is the Experience of Pursuing a Ph.D. in Business Administration Like?

Unlike bachelor’s or master’s-level work, where highly structured learning and individual courses with many different instructors are the norms, doctoral education places a higher premium on self-directed learning and closer relationships with fewer faculty members in a particular area of specialization. On average, Ph.D. programs will take five to six years to complete and involve the intense study of academic journal articles and original research writings. Doctoral students often forge close friendships with faculty mentors. These mentors work closely with students to:

  • Define a course of study,
  • Prepare for qualifying exams,
  • Provide guidance in the dissertation process, and
  • Help with pursuing their first faculty position.

  • Stay Flexible -Learn how to bend to keep you from breaking. Your expectations during business school will only sometimes get met. Roll with the punches and keep a cool head when things heat up.
  • Make Connections – Business school is a time to build your network . The relationships you make with instructors and fellow students will last a lifetime.

There are many paths, but we are one HBS. Our PhD students draw on diverse personal and professional backgrounds to pursue an ever-expanding range of research topics. Explore more here about each program’s requirements & curriculum, read student profiles for each discipline as well as student research , and placement information.

The PhD in Business Administration grounds students in the disciplinary theories and research methods that form the foundation of an academic career. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program has four areas of study: Accounting and Management , Marketing , Strategy , and Technology and Operations Management . All areas of study involve roughly two years of coursework culminating in a field exam. The remaining years of the program are spent conducting independent research, working on co-authored publications, and writing the dissertation. Students join these programs from a wide range of backgrounds, from consulting to engineering. Many applicants possess liberal arts degrees, as there is not a requirement to possess a business degree before joining the program

The PhD in Business Economics provides students the opportunity to study in both Harvard’s world-class Economics Department and Harvard Business School. In the micro track, students focus on the study of interpersonal relationships within organizations and the effects that groups have on individuals. Students in the macro track use sociological methods to examine organizations, groups, and markets as a whole, including topics such as the influence of individuals on organizational change, or the relationship between social missions and financial objectives. Jointly administered by HBS and GSAS, the program includes core disciplinary training in sociology or psychology, as well as additional coursework in organizational behavior.

Video Transcript

Baris Ata (00:00): When I came here, it felt like, "Now I'm in the major leagues." I realized how high the standards are.

Jane L. Risen (00:09): We're the oldest PhD program within a business school, which is pretty extraordinary to think of sort of how long ago the recognition was there that we wanted to be training not just business leaders in practice, but to be training the future leaders of academic discipline.

Ray Ball (00:26): So I arrived in 1966. Oh, it was marvelous. The place just crackled with ideas and open discussion, and I ended up throwing out all the ideas I came with.

Ann L. McGill (00:35): What I especially liked about learning things here is this is an interdisciplinary school, so you didn't have to dive in a silo. You can wrap your arms around huge areas.

Marianne Bertrand (00:46): What is special is that we are part of a business school, training PhD students across a range of disciplines, not just economics or finance, which we deploy in the Economics Department, but also students are doing psychology, operation research.

Ray Ball (00:59): At Chicago, the ideas were the authorities, not the people, and they were all up for grabs.

Amir Sufi (01:06): What we're trying to create here is people who produce knowledge, not just consume it. And that's the real challenge I think of PhD education.

Ana-Maria Tenekedjieva (01:15): I was never told at any point that, "Oh, this is not real finance. This question is too outside of the box." On the contrary, it was always, "You should do what you want to do, and we're going to think about placement once the paper is ready."

Jane L. Risen (01:32): You don't make any assumptions. You question everything.

Pradeep K. Chintagunta (01:35): It's not enough just to know what other people have done. It's also important to know what needs to be done next. To be able to do that, you need to be able to ask questions beyond the questions that have been asked in the previous literature or in the previous knowledge that's already out there.

Jeffrey R. Russell (01:53): When you're going to seminars here, or watching my colleagues talk in the hallways, you'll often see them in what look like very contentious battles. But really, they're just after, "What's the right answer?" When PhD students come here, they are able to sort of bring that into their own souls, and I think that really pushes them then to sort of be the best possible researcher that they can.

Ana-Maria Tenekedjieva (02:12): Chicago Booth is known for its quite aggressive questioning style. I think that we get a little bit of a bad rap. There is a point to the aggressive questioning, and it is to clarify the idea. In Chicago Booth the spirit is be tough on the idea, not on the person.

Amir Sufi (02:30): Throughout the world, we're appreciating more and more how influential research can be. I think our PhD students going forward will increasingly be placed in positions, both in scholarship and in government and in business, where they can have major influence.

Ray Ball (02:48): So the fact that this is the oldest doctoral program in business, that it has been going for 100 years, gives some indication of the commitment of this school to training people. We still have those same values, and so it's always going to generate people who change the world, who change the way we think. I can't tell you at this point how that will happen. That's exactly the idea. New people come in with new ideas, and they learn how to implement them in the school, and they change the way we think about the world. And that's going to keep going.

How Do I Choose a DBA Program?

If you’ve decided to get a Doctorate in Business Administration, you’ve made one important decision already. The next big choice is deciding which DBA program is right for you and your career. Potential students will want to look at the best doctorate of business administration programs, and determine which will best fit their schedule and lifestyle. So how do you choose among the best business doctorate programs? Let’s dig in.

Many of the best DBA programs in the world offer both part-time and full time DBA programs. So first, determine what type of program, full-time, part-time, online, or whatever else works best for you. If a student chooses one of the best part-time DBA programs, for example, he or she can continue their career while also completing an advanced business degree. However,  students might need more time to get the doctorate in hand.

Some business schools excel when it comes to full-time DBA programs, yet don’t offer good part-time DBA programs. A student who wants to complete their DBA part-time may want to find a school that goes above and beyond at offering such programs. The same is true for online DBA offerings and other programs. Some universities have great online DBA programs, for example, but their full-time program is lacking. Find the one that’s right for you.

Students want to take a close look at the faculty at the business schools they’re considering. If one B-school has a great reputation, but not many faculty members work in the student’s area of interest (say, international business ), it may not be a good choice for a DBA. A school with a lessor overall reputation but better faculty in the chosen area may be a better fit.

Faculty is among the most important distinguishing factors among top DBA programs. Program size may also play an important role. You could attend a top-notch DBA program, but if your desired faculty-mentors are already supervising a lot of students, they may not be able to supervise you.

Ultimately, when looking at the best doctorate in business administration programs, remember it’s not just about rankings, but also the student, their preferences, and their research interests.

What’s the Difference Between a DBA and a PhD in Business?

When pursuing a doctorate in business, students have to choose between a Doctorate in Business Administration (DBA) and Doctor of Philosophy (PhD). Both degrees offer an excellent education in business, so there’s no easy answer when it comes to DBA vs PhD in business administration.

That said, there are important differences. A PhD is sometimes seen as a more theoretical degree, hence the “philosophy” in the title. Many (but certainly not all) PhD holders are more interested in academic and theoretical pursuits rather than applied business practice. Their research centers around theoretical economics or ethics concerns, for example.

With a DBA, students can still gain a lot of theoretical knowledge and dig into ethical or other theoretical topics. However, a Doctorate in Business Administration typically focuses more on applied skills and practice. Some professionals who want to further their career while still staying industry-focused go for a DBA instead of a PhD.

Some students more interested in academic research rather than applied practice go for a PhD. Those looking to work in industry and apply their skills may prefer to obtain a Doctorate in Business Administration. That said, when it comes to a DBA versus a PhD in business administration, both will prepare students for a variety of careers in industry, academia, and at research institutions.

A DBA allows students to pursue their own interests. A student may decide to focus on finance or business strategy, for example. Or perhaps they’ll jump into international business. Either way, a DBA will help students acquire skills that can be applied to a variety of fields and also a wide range of situations.

So why get a doctorate in administration? Do so to burnish your resume, advance your career, potentially earn a higher salary, and expand your own skill set. Outside of careers, research skills and knowledge may pay dividends elsewhere as well.

The prestige of institutions like Oxford, Cambridge, Yale, Harvard, and MIT can certainly boost one’s academic career. There is a clear correlation between obtaining a PhD from a top university and securing academic positions worldwide.

However, the competitive environment in these universities can have negative impacts. Pressure to excel may be amplified, and competition among students could lead to unethical behavior, such as sabotaging other students’ work. Furthermore, the expectations of some professors in these universities can create unfavorable conditions for PhD students, as they may demand excessive competition and display egotistical behavior.

A well-rounded evaluation of potential universities should include factors such as the experts and resources available, the location of the institution, and the financial support offered. It is crucial to ensure that the university is well-known and respected in the specific field of study.

PhD candidates should also consider the city and country they will be living in for several years. Finding a place that offers a good work-life balance and supports mental well-being can significantly impact the success of a PhD journey.

Pursuing a PhD at a top university can be advantageous for one’s career, but it comes with increased pressure and competition. Candidates should carefully consider all aspects of their potential university, including its reputation in their field, the resources available, the location, and the financial support offered.

The decision should be based on a comprehensive evaluation of the university and how well it aligns with the candidate’s goals and personal well-being.

Remember to tailor your statement to each program, demonstrating your understanding of the institution and its values.
  • Be strategic with recommendations: Choose recommenders who can provide a well-rounded view of your abilities and character. • Develop a strong narrative throughout your application: In addition to your personal statement, weave your story through the rest of your application. This includes short essays, resume, and any additional materials. Be consistent and authentic in presenting yourself, ensuring that the admissions committee gets a holistic picture of who you are and how you can contribute to their program.
  • Plan ahead: Applying to multiple Ivy League PhD programs is time-consuming and requires exceptional organization. Create a calendar or a Gantt chart to help you keep track of deadlines and tasks. This will allow you to allocate ample time for each component of your application and seek feedback from trusted friends or mentors.

An online Ph.D. in business administration is the right fit for a specific type of learner. To determine whether you should pursue a doctoral degree in business administration , ask yourself a few key questions:

  • What’s your budget? Distance learners generally save on expenses related to on-campus housing and transportation. Moreover, some public universities allow out-of-state students who exclusively enroll in online programs to pay in-state or otherwise discounted tuition rates. If you’re looking to save money, online learning could help.
  • How much flexibility do you need? Flexibility is among the best features of distance learning. If you’re a parent or plan to work full time, you might seek an asynchronous online program, which won’t include scheduled class times.
  • How do you best learn? Online learning requires a great deal of organization, discipline and time management skills. If you crave more structure or prefer closer interaction with peers and faculty, on-campus or hybrid learning might offer a better fit.

There are two key types of college accreditation : institutional and programmatic.

Institutional accreditation is the more essential of the two. The Council for Higher Education Accreditation (CHEA) and the U.S. Department of Education oversee the agencies that handle institutional accreditation, which involves vetting the quality of each school’s faculty, student services and finances.

You should enroll only at institutionally accredited schools. Otherwise, you will be ineligible for federal student aid, and employers may not recognize your degree.

Programmatic accreditation provides quality assurance for specific degree programs and departments. For an online business administration degree , you should keep an eye out for programmatic accreditation from one of three organizations:

  • The Association to Advance Collegiate Schools of Business (AACSB)
  • The Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs (ACBSP)
  • The International Accreditation Council for Business Education (IACBE)

Once you’re sure about pursuing an online Ph.D. in business administration, here’s what to do next.

Consider Your Future Goals

A Ph.D. in business administration suits students who want to eventually become professors or pursue other academic or research-related roles in business. A Ph.D. in business is more theory-focused than a Doctor of Business Administration , which is comparatively practice-focused and includes an applied research component.

Most academic jobs in business do not require licensure or certification. However, you may need a demonstrated history of academic writing and publishing. A Ph.D. program with a dissertation can help you satisfy those criteria.

Understand Your Expenses and Financing Options

Per-credit tuition rates for the four programs in our guide range from $442 to $695. Over the course of a typical 60-credit Ph.D. program, this translates to approximately $26,000 to $42,00 in total tuition.

Make sure to fill out the Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA®) to see if you qualify for any federal grant, loan or scholarship opportunities. You can also pursue aid through third parties such as nonprofit organizations or your prospective university.

Doctoral programs often offer graduate assistantships to help offset the cost of tuition. Some Ph.D. programs even provide students with stipends or housing allowances in exchange for them teaching undergraduate courses or assisting professors with research. However, these opportunities are often reserved for on-campus students.

What is a Ph.D. in business administration?

A Ph.D. in business administration is a terminal academic degree for students who want to become business professors or work in other academic or research-focused roles in the field.

How many years is a Ph.D. in business administration?

The best online Ph.D. programs in business administration require between three and a half and five years to complete.

Is a doctorate in business administration worth it?

It depends on your goals. If you want to advance academic scholarship and research in business or work as a professor, a doctoral business administration degree can help you reach your goals.

Which is better, a Ph.D. or a D.B.A.?

It depends on your goals. A D.B.A. focuses more on applied research, while a Ph.D. advances theory in the field.

Most DBA programs take three to five years to complete and involve a dissertation or presentation capstone. You’ll learn about organization management, corporate leadership, and market strategy.

Admissions Requirements

To be admitted to a business administration doctoral program there are several universal requirements. You’ll need some previous higher education, while some programs require a n MBA others may only ask for a bachelor’s degree. Letters of recommendation and a professional resume are also commonly a part of the application. There are also some doctorate in business administration programs that require a minimum number of years for work experience. Accreditation of DBA Programs

While researching prospective DBA programs, you should only consider institutions with regional accreditation. If you attend a school without regional accreditation, you may have difficulty finding a job or attaining professional advancement after graduation.

Universities that offer online degrees may also hold national accreditation from the Distance Education Accrediting Commission (DEAC). Accreditation from DEAC demonstrates that the school’s online programs offer the same educational experience and learning outcomes as its on-campus programs.

Lastly, if you’re considering a business doctoral program, you can look for programmatic accreditation. Reputable U.S. business programs hold accreditation from the Accreditation Council for Business Schools and Programs , which grants accreditation to undergraduate and graduate business programs that prepare learners to succeed in business careers.

World University Rankings 2023 by subject: business and economics

The business and economics subject table uses the same trusted and rigorous performance indicators as the Times Higher Education World University Rankings 2023, but the methodology has been recalibrated to suit the individual fields.

The ranking assesses universities by their performance in the following disciplines: business and management, accounting and finance, and economics and econometrics.

This year’s table includes 870 universities, up from 794 last year.

View the World University Rankings 2023 by subject: business and economics methodology

The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) retains its top spot from last year, while China’s Tsinghua University , rising three places to the eighth spot, is the only new entrant to the top 10.

There are only two new additions to the top 20 – Peking University, China, which has risen seven places to 15th, and ETH Zurich, Switzerland, which has climbed five places to 16th.

Beyond the top 20, the US remains prevalent, but other countries, such as South Korea, Switzerland and Australia, have also improved. For instance, Yonsei University (Seoul campus) rises 34 spots to 44th, the University of Zurich rises five spots to joint 42nd, and the University of Melbourne rises eight spots to 35th.

The University of California also repeatedly improves its performance from last year. For example, its Berkeley campus rises one place to seventh, and San Diego rises one place to joint 31st. The Los Angeles branch remains in 19th place.

Some 154 points separate the top programme, at Columbia, from the school ranked 100. The schools are divided into four tiers. Business schools in tiers l and ll score above the average for the cohort, and tiers lll and lV are below it. The difference in scores between schools ranked consecutively is greater within tiers l and lV than in tiers ll and lll. Tier l includes 18 schools from Columbia to Virginia's Darden. Tier ll includes schools from New York's Stern, ranked 19, to Edhec at 47. Tier lll, headed by Fudan, spans schools ranked 48 to 81. Tier lV includes schools from Sungkyunkwan at 82 to Eada at 100.

Best Business Schools For Supply Chain MBAs & Specialized Master’s

top business phd programs in the world

Supply chain programs today are about more than traditional concerns like trucking, shipping, and the physical side of getting goods around the globe. Digital transformation, sustainability, resilience, blockchain — all are now essential elements of a good program, the kind employers want to hire graduates from.

That’s what the leadership at Marquette University’s College of Business understands. Employers have taken notice, which is a big reason the small, storied Midwestern B-school just saw the best year-to-year improvement in rankings fortune of nearly all of a few dozen top U.S. B-schools. The ranking: Gartner’s biennial list of the top 25 university supply chain graduate and undergraduate programs.

Marquette’s College of Business graduate school jumped 10 places from Gartner’s 2022 ranking , to 7th, and its undergraduate program jumped nine places, to 10th. In both lists, Marquette, located in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, is among the smallest of all ranked programs, with around 30 students in its graduate supply chain master’s, another 70 or 80 in the school’s MBA program with a supply chain concentration, and just under 200 in its supply chain undergraduate major.

MARQUETTE DEMONSTRATES AGILITY — AND FORESIGHT

top business phd programs in the world

Marquette’s Mark Barratt: “We invest in every single student, and I think that’s part of the big difference, and that’s really what we focus on”

“One thing that I’m particularly proud of with the supply chain rankings is the fact that if you look at the size of the programs, we’re punching well above our weight,”says Mark Barratt, chair of the Management Department at Marquette since 2020, and associate professor in the school’s operations and supply chain group since January 2013. Barratt teaches both the undergrad capstone course, Integrated Supply Chain Strategy, and courses in the school’s Master’s in Supply Chain Management program.

“We’re much smaller, but I think that’s actually helpful because it enables us to be much more agile so we can kind of change with what’s happening, what skills are needed by industry. So for example, with the graduate program, we’ve already got a course that’s in development, but it’s really about how are companies using generative AI in their supply chains, because that’s exploded since 2023.”

Barratt credits the foresight of Marquette leadership in 2018, which oversaw an overhaul of the school’s supply chain curriculum — away from a focus on the physical side and toward digital transformation and sustainability. That kind of foresight has put Marquette at the forefront of how AI is impacting supply chains.

Employers love what they’re cooking in Milwaukee.

“We’ve got the ability to do that, to be more agile, because whether it’s at the graduate or the undergraduate level, we are smaller,” Barratt says. “I think about ASU and I think about the University of Tennessee, where they have between 600 and 1,000 supply chain majors. For them, it takes time to make change, whereas we’ve got the ability to change that much quicker.”

GARTNER: ARKANSAS TAKES TOP UNDERGRAD SPOT FOR 3RD STRAIGHT RANKING

Fifty-two schools in the U.S. and Canada participated in Gartner’s 2024 survey of undergraduate supply chain programs, and 47 participated in the graduate survey. In schools’ curricula, Gartner found growing interest in analytics and a decline in manufacturing focus. “This is especially noticeable in supply chain MBA degrees,” says Dana Stiffler, distinguished VP analyst with the Gartner Supply Chain practice, “with less than 50% of programs having significant manufacturing content, compared to 76% of programs two cycles ago in 2020.”

Gartner ranks the University of Tennessee the top B-school for supply chain graduate programs, followed by the University of Arkansas, which is based in Fayetteville where Walmart is headquartered. The 1-2 of Tennessee-Arkansas is unchanged from Gartner’s 2022 ranking. The rest of the 2024 top five is rounded out by Rutgers, up from No. 5 in 2022; the University of Texas at Dallas, same as 2022; and the University of South Carolina, up from No. 6.

The biggest jumper among 25 supply chain graduate programs is Arizona State University, which leaped 13 places to No. 10. Marquette is next, having jumped 10 places to No. 7. Indiana University improved eight places to land 12th.

For supply chain undergraduate programs, Nos. 1-2 are flipped, with Arkansas taking the top spot and Tennessee at No. 2. Arkansas has been No. 1 since 2020 ; Tennessee is No. 2 for a second straight ranking. South Carolina ranks third for a second straight ranking, while the University of North Texas is No. 4, up from No. 6, and Rutgers is No. 5, same as 2022.

Marquette, at No. 10, and Purdue University, at No. 15, tied for the biggest improvement from the 2022 ranking, each up nine places. See the next pages for the complete 2024 Gartner rankings.

‘WE INVEST IN EVERY SINGLE STUDENT’

Mark Barratt spent 10 years at Arizona State University teaching undergrads and MBAs supply chain management and logistics before joining Marquette in early 2013. He says one of Marquette’s biggest advantages compared to bigger programs like ASU is the ability of faculty to get to know students better: a personalized touch that is a crucial ingredient in students becoming more confident and capable graduates.

“At Marquette, I pretty much know every single student,” he says. “And so first day of class, they walk in and I’m like, ‘Hey Joe, hey Fred, Steve, Jane.’ The fact is, they’re not here to be a number in the class. We’re not here to just talk generally. We invest in every single student, and I think that’s part of the big difference, and that’s really what we focus on.”

That focus on the individual certainly helped Marquette when it came to the alumni response portion of the Gartner ranking, Barratt says.

“A large part of the Gartner ranking obviously is the industry value component,” he says. “What we do is, we reach out to pretty much all of our students with a personalized email and say, ‘Hey, look, the ranking is coming up. If you appreciated what we’ve done for you in terms of the degree or whatever, whether it’s undergrad or graduate, please consider filling in the survey.’ And I think the response has been phenomenal.”

A LOGICAL LOGISTICS LANDING SPOT

With an online master’s in supply chain management, a robust specialization in the full-time MBA program, and a Center for Supply Chain Management that this year celebrated its 25th anniversary — all in addition to its thriving undergraduate program — Marquette is a logical landing spot for students interested in supply chain management. But it hasn’t always sold itself well, Barratt says.

That’s another thing that is changing as the top schools become closer rivals for talent.

“I think the gap between the top 25 has closed significantly,” Barratt says. “Gartner used to rank content of the curriculum. Now they don’t because the content has very much normalized across the top 25. But there are still opportunities there to highlight more of the hotter-topic issues like digital transformation.

“The other thing that we’ve done: We make sure that we actually talk about what we offer. Because I think academic institutions are not always great advocates for themselves. If you talk about it, people go, ‘Oh, great, that’s wonderful.’ If you don’t talk about it, then you’re just the same as everybody else where they just don’t know. We spent a lot of time working on that.”

College of Business earns USNWR Best Graduate Schools ranking

Academics , Campus / April 11, 2024 by LeAnn Waldroup

Louisiana Tech University’s College of Business has once again been named to  U.S. News & World Report ’s list of Best Graduate Schools of Business. The 2024-25 rankings released today place Tech at No. 97, tied for the highest ranked public business school in the state.

“Our graduate programs provide students with a relevant and innovative education from a nationally ranked research institution with a high return on investment,” said Dr. Chris Martin, dean of the College of Business. “The continued growth in enrollment, quality of student, and external rankings validates to stakeholders the value of the educational experience provided by the best research and teaching faculty in our nation.”

Half of the rankings formula evaluated institutions on the successful placement and earnings outcomes of their graduates. The other half was a combination of student selectivity and peer and recruiter assessment.

“For the third consecutive year, nearly 100 percent of our MBA and Master of Accountancy graduates placed in a successful career,” said Martin. “This is further indication that our market-responsive curriculum is preparing innovative and ethical leaders for success in today’s rapidly changing business environment.”

The College of Business received other top accolades this year, including No. 1 Best College of Business in Louisiana by Niche and No. 2 Best Value MBA by College Consensus.  U.S. News  also ranked the Online MBA and business undergraduate programs on their 2024 lists that came out earlier in the year.
